Everyone handles it differently, but it is what it is   Jared McCain of Duke announced today he’s going pro … this is of no shock to me; projected by many of the ‘experts’ to be drafted in the first round, seen some mocks of him in the 20’s - GO FOR IT … My guess is we’ll hear Kyle Filipowski announce his intentions for the NBA Draft in the near future Tyrese Proctor coming back to Duke - massive for John Scheyer because there’s a case where Scheyer could lose his starting five … Proctor will be the 2nd most tenured player back for Duke, anticipating Jeremy Roach returns for a 5th year, and that Filipowski leaves for the NBA … Roach, Proctor, and assuming Caleb Foster all return, that’s a lot of experience that’s much needed for a big time recruiting class that’s coming in, where they can shepherd in the youth   Carolina Hurricanes are in action tonight - Game No. 80 on the road at St. Louis - Chicago on Sunday, then Columbus on Tuesday to close out the regular season … There’s still a lot to be gained - looking at the standings, the New York Rangers lost yesterday to the New York Islanders, meaning a win today by Carolina in any way, shape, or form puts the Hurricanes within one point of the Rangers for the top spot in the Metro division, and allows Carolina to stay ahead of Boston for the 2nd best record in the Eastern Conference … but there’s still much for this Canes team to figure out, both individually, and as a team … We’ve seen Andrei Svechnikov the past two games play like the Svech this team needs - a consistent scoring threat that’s physical, wins battles along the wall, and - more importantly - staying out of the penalty box! Evgeny Kuznetsov - he’ll be playing his 18th game with the Canes tonight - didn’t produce any points his first three games with Carolina (to be expected), but then had a four game point streak where he scored 2 goals and had 3 assists … in the 10 games since - 0 goals, 2 assists, -2 while averaging over 14:30/game … if he’s going to be this team’s No. 2 center, and skate on the power play, he needs to be a consistent threat on the ice; not a 5 points every 4 games, but needs to guide a line where he’s creating chances for Necas and Teravainen, because when Carolina has scoring threats throughout the line, that’s when they’re most dangerous. Can’t all fall on the top line and the power play   The Carolina Panthers overall have had a good offseason so far … O-line signings, the Diontae Johnson trade was great, the long-term deal for Derrick Brown is amazing, but there are still holes to be filled, upgrades and needs. Dan Morgan & Dave Canales are not going to fix everything in one offseason, but there are still two positions that are need of a high end player upgrade, one on each side of the ball.  Tight End - Tommy Tremble is okay, but still 23 years old, Ian Thomas is not much more than a blocker/ST guy.

For the 4th time in 5 years we’ll have the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl….and the first of those appearances turned out to be a 30-21 win over the San Francisco 49ers….so let’s have at it.   49ers 34-31 Lions   -Decisions, decisions, decisions…. -This is going to be the defining conversation of SF’s comeback win (separate conversation about how the 49ers have been outplayed in 5 of 8 quarters and won both games) -Real reason why the 49ers are going to Vegas is they got their act in gear on offense in the 2nd half.  281 yards of offense on the 5 drives that produced scores (FG-TD-TD-FG-TD) -Brock Purdy with three significant first down scrambles. -Brandon Aiyuk catching a 51 yard pass off the facemask of a Detroit defensive back (should have been an interception/incomoplete pass, but…) -Josh Reynolds back to back dropped passes and the Jamyr Gibbs fumble were waaaaaay more consequential.       KC 17-10 Baltimore   -Ravens have to be the happiest bunch in the world that there was so many debateable things about the SF win, because – nationally speaking – they’re almost getting a pass. -The Chiefs are great and Patrick Mahomes might end up as the most decorated QB ever before it’s over, but this was a Ravens disaster. -How do you run the ball only 16 times all game?  And, some of those are Lamar scrambles, so….what 13 called running plays? -Zay Flowers had a great game with 115 yards receiving and a touchdown, but a stupid taunting penalty (separate convo about that), a fumble going into the end zone and then a boo-boo when you slam your hand on the bench. -Ravens also committed a couple of personal fouls that gave KC 30 yards late in the game. -Brilliant to jump off on 1st and 5….even if they went too far and made it a personal foul.

John Forslund, Voice of the Seattle Kraken, on where some teams are around the NHL right now in terms of injuries and adjustments. Are there enough goalies to go around for all of the NHL teams that need one? What does John think the Carolina Hurricanes need to do to be successful, and he actually doesn’t blame the goaltending? He passed Warren Martin for fourth most by a Tar Heel with 191. • Bacot passed Virginia’s Ralph Sampson for fourth all-time in ACC history in rebounds. Bacot has 1,5     Bill Belichick is heading into his second interview with the Atlanta Falcons… -Can’t decide if it’s more odd that he’s going in for a second interview or the state reasons why Atlanta is looked at as maybe the second best situation behind the Chargers. -It’s an easier division to win. -Excuse me?   As expected, the Dallas Cowboys are staying the course and keeping Mike McCarthy as head coach. -On one hand, they’ve won 12 games in each of the last 3 years and twice won the NFC East. -On the other hand, they’ve not advanced past the divisional round and are 1-3 in the playoffs under McCarthy. -But, Jerry Jones’ history has been patience when it comes to the head coaching spot.  Jason Garrett got 8 full seasons.   I don’t know what the Eagles will do.  I think there’s enough good from Nick Siriani to keep him, though the assistant coach drain might have been an issue this year. -Decision-making was suboptimal Monday night -But, coming out of their locker room now are comments about the switch of DCs mid-stream and how difficult it was to deal with.  Like having two marriages. -That second one, especially since it made them worse, is the fireable offense.   Hurricanes back on the practice ice today….everyone but Pyotr Kochetkov (and Freddie Andersen, of course) -Two more home games…

Michigan 34-13 over Washington… -That final score seems accurate in terms of the way the game looked.  However, this was absolutely a game that was there for the Huskies to steal. -How many possessions did Washington have down just 7 points and how many times did they miss on plays that they could have made? Let’s not forget that Michigan has been dealing with the signal stealing scandal the back half of the year.  And, while it didn’t have anything to do with their wins over Alabama and Washington, to say that it didn’t have anything to do with other wins is silly.   -It might have had NOTHING to do with it, especially since they played one of the easiest schedules in the run up to the end of the season. -But, you are just wishing it to be true if you think it was irrelevant. -What was there to do about it?  Nothing from the NCAA perspective.  This was always going to be up to the league (HA) or the school (double HA).   -There is no honor among thieves.   Panthers have a list of interview requests and you won’t be surprised to know that it leans primarily to the offensive side… -No, Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick are NOT on the list.   Duke is at Pitt tonight (9pm) in a game that will be a ton more difficult than you might think. -Road games aren’t cake walks. -Pitt should  be better than their record (1-3, 10-5) -Duke hasn’t really established a rhythm of who they are just yet.   Tiger and Nike split… -$660m in Nike money

No. 21 Duke vs No. 10 Baylor: Game played at MSG, so home game for Duke?  What I like: their ball movement, and they’re doing a lot of it without Tyrese Proctor, who’s been out since the loss to GA Tech - he just started getting back to practice about a week ago, but who knows when he’ll return from an ankle injury - but their ability to move the ball offensively to generate open shots is impressive  Something to keep an eye on: Low post defense - Christian Reeves has been out, and Ryan Young hasn’t been getting a lot of minutes off the bench, so it’s been Filipowski as the post defender along with Mark Mitchell - how long is that sustainable?    NC State vs St. Louis: game at PNC, so home game for NC State? What I like: guard depth - DJ Horne, Jayden Taylor, Casey Morsell, Dennis Parker Jr., Michael O’Connell, throw MJ Rice & Kam Woods into the mix - there are a lot of guys to work into the mix in the back court for Kevin Keatts, which allows them to play with a lot of speed & pressure throughout the court Something to keep an eye on: Can they get more from the low post? DJ Burns averaging over 13 pts/game, and actually leads the team in assists with 28 overall this year, but Mo Diarra has been a little banged up and is a rim protector and rebounder, and Ben Middlebrooks hasn’t provided as much as expected   No. 11 UNC vs No. 7 Oklahoma: Game played at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, so home game for UNC? Third straight game vs. a ranked opponent on a neutral floor for Carolina What I like: RJ Davis, Harrison Ingram, Bacot - those three for the most part this season have been getting the job done; has there been a hiccup (Bacot vs Kentucky) - sure; but those three overall have been providing scoring night in and night out … RJ Davis is at the top, or near the top, of the ACC in scoring at 21.6/game, Ingram is shooting over 43% from three while also third on the team in assists, third in pts/game, and 2nd in rebounds, and Bacot is double-double player just about every night Something to keep an eye on: secondary scoring - Cormac Ryan was in an slump, but had 20 points against Kentucky; Elliot Cadeu leads the team in assists as a freshman with 40 this year, but still waiting for him to have that big scoring output … this team will need secondary scoring

The Carolina Panthers need to play with desperation the last three weeks of the season against the Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dennis says he wants to see a team still desperate for another win, and force their opponents to match their level of desperation.

Florida State University is still upset and they're still pointing fingers...  Grant of Rights - locked in Exit fee - $120 million During a board of trustees meeting in August, Florida State president Richard McCullough made it clear the school would "very seriously" consider leaving the league if things did not change. Any ACC school that wants to leave the conference would have to challenge the grant of rights to be able to get out before joining another league. The grant of rights, which runs through 2036, gives the ACC control over media rights for its member schools -- including the broadcast of games in all sports. In addition, any school that wants to leave the ACC would have to pay an exit fee of three times the league's operating budget, or roughly $120 million.

UNC's former basketball star and NBA player, Eric Montross, has passed away at the age of 52 after battling cancer. Steve Kirschner, North Carolina's Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications, joined Adam Gold to reflect on Montross's legacy at North Carolina. He shared how he used UNC basketball as a platform and what he meant to the community.

Brendan Marks of The Athletic provided a breakdown of UNC basketball after defeating No. 10 Tennessee, 100-92, in the ACC/SEC Challenge that saw UNC score 61 points in the first half, but only 39 in the second half. Marks also shares his thoughts on Tyrese Proctor & Duke basketball after the No. 7 Blue Devils lost on the road at Arkansas basketball, 80-75.

Adam Gold and Roddy Jones of ESPN/ACC Network wonder if Florida State football and/or Alabama football will be left out of the College Football Playoff even if they win their respective conference championship games. Florida State is currently No. 4 in the CFP rankings and faces No. 14 Louisville football in the ACC football Championship, while No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide faces No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC football Championship.

Adam Gold says that comparing Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young to Houston Texans QB CJ Stroud doesn't matter if Bryce Young works out for Panthers, and that's really all that matters for the Panthers.

After a 5-4 OT loss to the New York Islanders, Adam Gold says the Carolina Hurricanes need to address their goalie situation now. Gold points out that the Hurricanes are one of the worst teams in the NHL when it comes to goaltending, and that the team cannot wait to see what happens with the health of Frederik Andersen and his blood clotting issue. Luke DeCock of the News & Observer discussed what the Carolina Hurricanes might do in net. 

The Carolina Hurricanes will face the New York Islanders tonight at PNC Arena. The Islanders are coming into tonight’s game following back-to-back one-goal losses. Stu Grimson, NHL Network analyst, joined Adam to preview what should be an even matchup.

The App State Mountaineers will face Troy in the Sun Belt Conference Championship game this Saturday. Kirk Morrison, ESPN college football analyst, will be on the call and joined Adam to preview the game. He discussed how impressed he’s been with the Mountaineers overall season heading into the game.

Joe Person, who covers the Carolina Panthers for The Athletic, joined Adam to discuss if owner David Tepper now has a target on his back. Joe shared examples throughout the season where Tepper hasn’t handled the pressure well. He also discussed how attractive the idea of Bill Belichick coming to Carolina is.   

Conor O'Neil, Devils Illustrated joined Adam to discuss the recent news of Duke quarterback Riley Leonard entering the transfer portal. There are multiple reports that Leonard is set to transfer to Notre Dame football. Conor discussed the reasoning behind this decision.

NC State quarterback MJ Morris will enter the transfer portal when the window opens to do so next week. Cory Smith from Pack Pride joined Adam to share his reaction to the announcement. He also discussed who’s next for NC State at the quarterback position.

Now that the Carolina Panthers have fired Frank Reich, who’s the next big-name head coach they’ll be on the prowl for? Ben Volin, Senior NFL writer for the Boston Globe, joined Adam to make a case for New England Patriots head coach, Bill Belichick. Ben provides examples of how Belichick could fit the narrative of being hired by the Panthers organization.

As we head into the conference championship weekend of the college football season, Adam is joined by Chip Patterson, CBS Sports, to predict the analytics and scenarios that can come about after this weekend. They discuss if there’s a scenario where Florida State defeats Louisville in the ACC Championship game, but they’re left out of the top five in the college football playoffs rankings. Also, considering how NC State closed their season, would they be able to bridge the gap between Louisville in discussion for an Orange Bowl appearance?

Scott Fowler, Sports Columnist for the Charlotte Observer joined Adam to share his overall thoughts on what he heard at David Tepper's press conference yesterday regarding the firing of Frank Reich. NFL Senior Writer, Ben Volin floated the idea that the Carolina Panthers should consider Bill Belichick for their coaching vacancy.  Adam would like to know why are people slamming this as a terrible idea. After all, Belichick is the best NFL coach ever, so, the worst-case scenario is that the Panthers would lose with some credibility.

The Cowboys' defense was the show's star, holding the Panthers to just 187 yards of total offense. Adam Gold explains how it was another one of those difficult road games for the Carolina Panthers this weekend. Only this one was at home inside Bank of America Stadium. Davis (69) was one of the best shooters in Carolina basketball history. A member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the Pineville, N.C., native was a two-time All-ACC honoree in 1976 and as a senior in 1977, when he led the Tar Heels to an ACC Tournament title and appearance in the NCAA championship game. He scored 1,863 points, grabbed 670 rebounds and had 409 assists playing for head coach Dean Smith. This season is the 50th anniversary of Davis’s 25-foot shot at the buzzer against Duke that capped an eight-point comeback in the final 17 seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime, where the Tar Heels won. It is one of the most iconic moments in college basketball and, even as a freshman, cemented his place in Carolina Basketball history.   Davis won NBA Rookie-of-the-Year honors with the Phoenix Suns in 1978.
