Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports, discusses what he saw during last weekends NFL Wild Card weekend and goes over potential mock drafts.

Adam asks who Ryan believes will win in the upcoming matchups, which he has to whisper because it’s difficult to believe, so you might be surprised at his answers as well. Could we be looking at an all NFC North matchup in the works? There’s a great set up over at Washington, so who does Adam believe should be the next head coach and does Ryan agree?

Hello, it is Ryan and we could all use an extra bright spot in our day, couldn't we?

Big wildcard weekend past division weekend, less big, not six games big, four games big, but the number one seeds get folded in. We'll talk a little bit about that. We'll talk a little bit about mock draft and we'll see if Ryan Wilson might've been hitting the head recently. Uh, pick six podcast, cbssports.com and with the first pick podcast as well. Do you have to replace Rick Spielman on that now? No, he's, he has a million side jobs, Adam. And, um, he, he was on the show yesterday, but they need to hurry up and hire a coach and we can get him back full time because of potential conflict of interest. As you may know, the internet, uh, tends not to take these things lightly.

And some people might put things on social media that maybe aren't true, but make you look bad. So we got to, we got to sort through it, but he's still with us. It does make a lot of sense.

Yes. Let's, uh, let's get to, I think Washington knows exactly who they want. I think they're just waiting, uh, for his season to end and we'll find out, uh, let's, let's talk about these games first. And I want to start with the last one because I believe that the most overreacted to game was Kansas city's win in, uh, in the first round of the playoffs there went over Miami.

We can see that coming a mile away. I mean, it doesn't make a difference whether or not I picked Miami to win or not. It was more pick about against Kansas city at this point, but Miami playing in, you know, sub freezing, you know, North pole, like weather that was never going to work out for them, especially since their offense, uh, appeared broken by the, uh, by the end of the season. Uh, I still am not a believer in Kansas city because I think the same problems they had for much of the year, which had them dropped to the third seed, I think those still exist.

Right. The dolphins were 0 and 10 and whether below 40 degrees, nevermind negative 10 and real field minus 28. So they, I mean, the fact that they showed up, I think the moral victory for them in terms of the chiefs, I think you're, you're onto something to Adam.

I think the thing that they're hanging their hat on this year, which is atypical of a chief's team, typically, um, the defense signal has a defense balling out and they're sort of leaning on them. And they're having to do that because the young wide receivers either haven't grown into the roles they thought they might as second or third year players, um, or guys, you trade for look at areas. Tony haven't worked out. He lost you to Smith Schuster.

And that seemed like a throwaway conversation point over the summer. Turns out he's good at good at being where he's supposed to be. He's not a number one receiver. He's not a game breaker, but when Patrick Holmes needs you to be somewhere, you need to be there. I think the difference is Russia rice, the rookie coming along and he's doing more and they're going to have to lean on him even more than they have in the past. And he's going to have to be more on point than he has in the past. He's had some drops, he's had some, some routes run that weren't where Patrick thought they were going to be. And I, I didn't take anything away from that game other than they won because to your point, the dolphins, they were, they were going to not going to be any competition, but the sort of the storyline you laid out for the chiefs, I could sort of lay out for the bills.

I mean, they'd be the sealer scene. Let's be real. Wasn't to win that game. And Josh Allen didn't do the crazy one or two things he did. He does every week.

And that's good. That's what you want to see less that, but you wonder when the games start to matter, typically, you know, most players games matter, but like a chief's bills match up. If Josh is going to do the one or two things that gets them in trouble and that defense, he's going to face against Spagnuolo and the chief is going to be a little bit differently, different than the ones that Steelers have without TJ Watts. So these might be two similar teams facing off. The good news for Buffalo that they're playing at home and Patrick Holmes has yet to play on the road in the playoffs. That is such a goofy stat.

As many playoff games as he's played every single one of them, except for the super bowls have been at home. I like, I think the fact that the bills have committed more to running the football, I think has helped them. I is, is this their best defense that they have had under Sean McDermott in the last few years? It feels like it. That's a great point about Ken Dorsett being replaced by Joe Brady in the running game, coming back to life and letting James cook, get out there and do some things, even if he makes the occasional mistake, but defensively, I think you're onto something too. And you know, it's funny and I'm going to I'm going to triple check this, but I swear I saw a stat for my research department that said Sean McDermott, Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, we're all hired in 2017. Sean McDermott has the most wins of those three. I I'm 95% sure that's that's right.

I'll triple check it. And I'm sure some of them know if I'm wrong, but that's got my attention because you know, we were having conversations two months ago, Adam, about is Sean going to keep his job? So it's a week to week league. And the fact that that defense is playing as well as well as it is with all the injuries, AJ Klein literally had his RV packed up and was going on vacation, came out of retirement to help that team. And he had a big partner in the way they played on over the weekend. And lots of me asked those guys again, uh, Kyra Elam, the first round pick a couple of years ago, who's been benched and played poorly up until the moment he had the interception, the end zone, he's not playing more confidence. So there's certainly a lot to like about this defense, given that they were down in the dumps. It felt like with all the injuries month and a half, two months ago. And it seems like that, that the team has turned things around post Ken Dorsey and post that the story coming out about some, some endeavor being a difficult person to work with. Maybe, uh, that galvanized him in some sense, Ryan Wilson, cbssports.com is joining us here on the Adam gold show.

All right. The two number one seeds, uh, are in action on Saturday Ravens hosted Texans 49ers host the Packers. Uh, I actually think both of these games are, I mean, they might not end up being close. I mean, we might have second half runaways by the two favorites. Uh, but I think that there's a lot to like about the two teams, uh, coming in off of big wins and especially the way green Bay has played offensively. How do you see those two?

I sort of like the Packers and win this game. I don't have to whisper that because it sounds crazy when you say it out loud, but, um, Jordan love and CJ Stroud, both young quarterbacks, one's a rookie. One's in his first year as a starter.

He's been only for a few years. Didn't seem to care that last week was their first playoff game. So they were playing like grizzled bats playing like some of the best players in the NFL.

And if you have that going for you and you already have that under your belt and in Jordan, Jordan loves case, you did it in the Jerry dome. I would imagine you're going to have a lot of confidence going into, uh, the 49ers going into San Francisco, especially knowing that Matt LaFleur, uh, and Kyle Shanahan are similar type play callers, similar type systems. They know each other.

So there's not going to be any, uh, sort of surprises that they perhaps comes toward in love's way. And I think the other takeaway, and this is something that the chiefs had tried to do, but have yet been unable to do it successfully. The Packers are playing with all first and second year receivers and tight ends. And those guys are balling out. Aaron Jones is back. He's rushed her 300 yards, 100 yards, I think three or four straight games now. And that's going to be critical what they do. And their offensive line has been surprisingly good. And I think again, it's a huge asset, slow up Bosa and chase young. But if you can do that, get the running game going and then let Jordan love do what he's been doing downfield terms of pushing the ball.

I think you have a chance. I think the Ravens will be a little more interesting. These teams played in week one, both teams completely different than they were back in mid September, whenever that match up was CJ Stroud is a, I mean, he's a top five quarterback. He's playing like the other guys, the MVP and, and here's what, what I'll come back to when the jets played the Texans a month or so ago and CJ got concussed, they got after CJ and they hit him. And I think the Ravens are going to have a similar type game plan. If they can get to him and Browns, I don't think touch CJ last week, even though that's what they're known for. If the Ravens get after CJ a little early, make them uncomfortable. He's without some of his playmakers because of injuries.

Maybe that game has a chance to get out of hand, but I love the underdog story on both sides of the, of those mashups. So if you are right about the Packers going to San Francisco, by the way, my wife will not allow me to have you on the program anymore. She's a 49ers fan. And she's terrified, terrified of this game, even though the reason she's terrified is two quarterbacks ago for Green Bay.

The, but if the Packers do beat the 49ers, are we looking at an all NFC North conference championship game? It is Ryan here and I have a question for you. What do you do when you win? Like, are you a fist pumper, a woohoo, or a hand clapper, a high fiver? I kind of like the high five, but if you want to hone in on those winning moves, check out Chumba casino at chumbacassino.com. So don't wait, start having the most fun ever at chumbacassino.com. It sure feels like it. It sure feels like it. And I joke with my buddy Rick Spillman. His brother is in the front office with the lions and who I have no inside information, but me guessing, like I think you were guessing earlier, Ben Johnson's probably the favorite if I had to make a guess where the Washington jobs.

So I need the book. I need the Buccaneers to win so I can get written back on the podcast. But I think the reality is in the Buccaneers are a great story, but the way the lines are playing and what Jared Goff was able to accomplish after being discarded essentially, and Dan Campbell getting that team so motivated. And I don't know if you saw the clip of Brad Holmes after the game, so excited the GM about what they were able to pull off and basically three-year span, it feels like it would be.

And then I've seen North matchup. And again, what plan are we living on in the post Aaron Rogers world where we have the potential for Aaron Rogers backup versus Jared Goff to determine who goes to the Super Bowl? Yeah, not only that, a conference championship game featuring the Green Bay Packers and a quarterback from Cal that isn't named Aaron Rogers. Oh yeah. With, with Jared Goff. All right, now let me get to the mock draft part of this conversation with Ryan Wilson, who does all of their mock drafts and, and with the first pick podcast, the, the spinoff, if you will, of the pick six podcast. So I'm just going to assume that you believe that Chicago is comfortable with Justin Fields to the point where they don't want to draft the quarterback, because I mean, really, you have more trading out of number one and taking Marvin Harrison number two. Yeah.

I think that came out a couple of weeks ago. I don't win every six weeks or so now. And here's what I keep going back and forth on. And that's a fair question. And I've gone back and watched Justin Fields a little more closely as the season's over now for Chicago.

And there's some things you go, okay. That's why he was drafted as high as he was. And there are other things that you go in year three, you need to be making these decisions better, making these throws more accurately or thrown with anticipation or whatever. And then the other part of that question, this is something that, I mean, you know, the more I cover the draft and study these kids, the more it becomes apparent that we don't know what we're doing. And I mean that in the media, in the league, it's so incredibly difficult, but if you give a young quarterback, the right play caller, it can make their life immeasurably easier.

I don't think Luke gets, he was that guy clearly the bears didn't either. They're, they're not bringing them back. And if there's a person out there that can help them in much the same way, Bobby slow, it can CJ Stroud works again, or Shane Steichen and Jalen hurts before he left or Shane Steichen and Anthony Richardson when, and their short time together before Anthony Richardson got hurt.

That can be the world of difference. Now, Matt Abel, who's is back for one more year. So he's probably under a little pressure. All that said, I would seriously, I think I'm now at the point where I would probably take Caleb at number one, get a edge rusher or a wide receiver at number nine, league neighbors, wide receiver LSU should be there. You can get an edge rusher there and then just continue to build because Caleb Williams is special and you're going to hear a lot of noise by Caleb off field, yada, yada, yada. That dude is special and they can trade Justin for a second round pick perhaps, and he could get on with his thing. So that's the long answer. I think I'm leaning towards Caleb now.

All right. And Drake may, by the way, Washington would do fine to get Drake may at number two, Washington's got six and this is sort of giving away. I'm going to do a ranking of the available jobs. Washington's got obviously the second pick. They have two picks in the second round, two in the third round and one in the fourth. They have six of the top 102 picks. I mean, a ton of cap space, a ton of cap space.

And frankly, they have the bones of a good team right now, right? I mean, you've got, you're okay at running back. You've got wide receivers that can catch. You've got a quarterback that you can use unless you want to trade.

Sam, how you got a quarterback that you can use today to even give you a little bit of cushion. So you don't have to start your second overall pick if you don't want to. There's a lot set up there for Washington.

It's a great landing spot in historically. No one's ever considered it because of the ownership of the ownership changed. And your point is a good one about there's no and Jordan Love is the poster person for this. Yeah, you don't have to throw the kid out there and let them fail and then say, see, I told you so you can let them come along slowly, grow into the role.

And then, oh, look at that. It turns out he's pretty good, but we don't live in that day and age. Guys are worried about getting fired. I get all that in terms of head coaches and general managers, uh, but do ownership, have a GM in place. He's from San Francisco and Adam Peters. They're going to get the coach. And if it's a Ben Johnson, and again, I'm just speculating. I don't know.

I wish I did know. So I could get this podcast back on regularly scheduled programming, but we know he can put quarterbacks in position to succeed. Can you coach a football team?

I don't know that. And that's one of the big questions about when you hire a coordinator, but if you put the right coordinator with the quarterback, whether it's Sam Hall or Drake may or both, you're going to have success. And then you can see that play itself out.

You can't square peg around, hold it, hold it, and then be upset when everything goes sideways, which is what we see a lot of times around the league. And then it's a perpetual circle of starting over and finding the quarterback and firing the coach. Well, uh, I mean, I'm not going to root against the Detroit lions, but, uh, as maybe you are to get Rick Spielman back, but, uh, I hope everything works out for, and with the first pick podcast, Ryan Wilson at Ryan Wilson, CBS on Twitter.
