Jason Capel, Assistant Basketball Coach at Pitt, on Pitt’s season thus far and where he sees this team going in the tournament.

What’s it like with all of this down time? How big of a response was it for his guys in THIS situation? How does Jason work with this player that actually helps in tough situations where someone might ask, “how did he make THAT shot??”? Which player gives energy and confidence to others, which has helped to elevate this basketball team? Are they looking at playing Thursday as a disadvantage? How does Jason and his brother handle watching a Duke vs UNC game together?

For the ones who get it done. Jason Capil is an assistant coach to his brother Jeff at it and they've got the double by one of the therefore double by they got one of them coming up at the ACC tournament in DC. They don't start until Thursday. So what do you do in your downtime?

Jason? What's going on? Well, it's not much downtime as you know. For coaches, never much downtime when you're still in season, but the guys did have a couple days off after Saturday, you know, to get their minds right, rest their bodies. That gives me time to be around my family, three little boys in eight and four.

So, you know, it's always live action in the Capil household. But now, you know, back to business practice today, head to DC and get ready to play some basketball. You and you and your wife play zone.

How do you do that? How do you handle that? Well, my wife is definitely the point guard.

First of all, he runs the show. But when I come home, I guess I'm the defensive stopper. When dad comes home, she passes the ball, gives me an ISO. Very nice.

You can come off the screen. I can do whatever is necessary. I'm an all around player.

Jason Capil is joining us here on the Adam Gold show. You guys had such a good year and I love watching your team play, especially the way they developed. I mean, maybe there's added meaning to it, but let's just pare this down. The win at Cameron, especially based on how Duke played over at the Peterson Center. How big of a response was it for your guys? Well, a huge response. And you just have to put into context. We were one in five, one in five, you know, coming off an off day. You're sitting in the office saying we're going to Durham.

And whereas most people would look at it as a daunting task, which it is, let's not make light of that. We as a staff looked at it as, okay, we're going on the road. You know, there's so much noise around Pittsburgh when you are one in five.

I don't care what sports you're playing, whether it's the Penguins, whether it's the Steelers, whether it's the Pirates, whomever it is, when you're one in five, there's noise. And so for us, we just looked at it as an opportunity to go on the road to band together. You know, when you're in those hotel rooms and no guys got the UNO tournaments going and the PlayStation going, it's just you.

It's just you and your team, you know, kind of hunker down in the foxhole. So we were one in five, but we weren't a team that lacked confidence, if that makes any sense at all. You know, we have very confident guys in the locker room led by, you know, Blake Henson, who has really unreasonable confidence, but that's why he is who he is.

And so with his leadership, you know, and guys, young guys that believe in themselves, we looked at it as an unbelievable opportunity that was going to take great fight. And, you know, Adam Golden Studio with my man coach Pete Teruda, Capital Financial Advisory Group. Financial advice industry can be overwhelming for a lot of people.

Is there a way to be sure you're getting the best service when you don't know? Yeah, Adam, it's not just if you gave the money to a planning team and they did good the first year. I mean, anyone could do good for one year, but it's a track record and it's a long term accounts that are very important. We call that a financial fill up strategy, Adam, and that gives you lifetime income you can never outlive. We'll put together for you, the listener, your very own total retirement plan to call right now. Call and claim your comprehensive review with Coach Pete and the team. Triple eight eight four three double o thirteen or text Adam to six hundred seven hundred. Adam Gold is a paid spokesman.

Investment advisory services offered by Capital Financial Advisory Group, a North Carolina registered investment advisor. Duke embarrassed us, you know, in the Peterson Events Center. They embarrassed us. They hit us in the mouth in front of a great crowd. They made shots. They were more physical and they really put it on. And so our guys look forward to the opportunity.

We knew that we could go in there and compete. We just wanted to fight. You know, we wanted to fight for 10 rounds. You know, you know, 10 rounds, four minutes around really Rocky five street fight. You know, him against Tommy God out in the streets. You know, my ring is out outside.

You know, you want to make things a street fight. And so that's kind of been about been our motto. And that's what we took in to Durham with confidence that we could go in there and at least put up a great fighter.

Our kids responded and we walked away with a great way. Jason Capel, assistant coach at Pitt is joining us. It's funny. You called Blake Hinson's confidence unreasonable. We have a basketball analyst on every Friday. We talk about most of the locals, but we also talk about the league. And he has always said about playing.

It's like the fourth or fifth time I've talked to him. He always says he has irrational confidence. He is such a good I mean, yeah, confidence, all of that. But he can elevate his game.

I believe he was seven for seven or eight for eight from three point range in that game. And some of those were like, how many times did you or Jeff go? No, no. Okay, good. Well, when you're coaching Blake, here's the thing I had to learn last year. You know, you have to let let Blake be Blake, right? Now, his father told me that when we were recruiting him, when you want the best out of them, you have to allow him to be who he is.

And it's always coming from the right place. He wants to win. And he knows that he's supremely confident in his shot and getting his shot off. We work out, we work on different angles, throwing them bad passes, turning his body. So the shots you see, you know, Blake and I laugh about this often. The shots you see him take most of those shots we actually practice.

Right. And so he's seen it go through the basket before. But he has such a joy for the game. He has such an appreciation for the city of Pittsburgh, for the University of Pittsburgh. And he's all about the right stuff. He's a great leader, an unbelievable teammate who empowers our young guys and the rest of his teammates to be great as well. But when he's making shots and he gets going, he gives so much energy and confidence to everyone else that is contagious. And so we love him.

The city loves him. And we just don't want this ride to end with Blake Henson leading us, leading the charge for the Panthers. I mean, I think there's every chance in the world that you guys are the last team standing in this tournament come Saturday night. I've seen your team play too many times. And I know what the national narrative is about not just Pitt, but the entire ACC, which I think the two things are kind of hand in hand. But when I look at a team that has Blake Henson and Carlton Carrington and Jalen Lowe and some of the athletic bigs that you guys have, I mean, that you guys absolutely look the part of an NCAA tournament team. But you guys know that I mean, there's there's work to be done.

And it's almost a disadvantage to not play until Thursday. No. Well, we're not looking at it as that because, again, you talk about we were one in five. Right. And for us to do what we've done during the season to get to a top four seed. Look, we had goals and aspirations before the season started. And for us to get to this point to where we are with 21 wins, 12 conference conference wins. That's something our guys are extremely proud of.

We like where we are. We understand that we have to continue to win. You know, don't leave anything to chance. And, you know, the thing we did going into Duke is you talk about just being one and oh, look, we're not worried about what happens. You know, today, tomorrow, we play Thursday. We're not worried about what happens after that.

We want to be one and oh, after each contest that we have a chance to compete in. And with that mindset, you can stay in the moment. You can hopefully take care of what you need to take care of and continue to move forward. That's the motto. The team has adopted and we're going to stay. We're going to stay in this zone for as long as we possibly can. And, you know, for the decision makers, hopefully they see that this is a team that is playing the best basketball at the right time of year.

They have a lot of exciting players and a team is very confident that we can play good basketball against anyone in the country night in, night out. But we just want to be one and oh after Thursday. Jason Capel is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show pit assistant coach who is brother Jeff. Sounds to me like you and you and your brother and I've spoken to him several times are really enjoying this whole family affair going on in Pittsburgh. And I'm thrilled for you guys. I am curious, though, and I know your game with NC State was after the Duke Carolina game.

But do you guys watch that game together? How do you guys handle that? For the ones who work hard to ensure their crew can always go the extra mile and the ones who get in early.

So everyone can go home on time. There's Granger offering professional grade supplies backed by product experts so you can quickly and easily find what you need. Plus, you can count on access to a committed team ready to go the extra mile for you.

Call click Granger dot com or just stop by Granger for the ones who get it done. You know what? It's funny you asked that. I don't think we've ever watched a Duke, North Carolina game together. What ever mean? Maybe we were kids. You know, when you're a kid growing up in North Carolina, right? You're in school, you know, the teachers roll out the rolling card with the big TV on top things of that nature.

You go home and you try to catch the rest of the games. That's probably the last time that we've watched the Carolina Duke game together, you know, because he left for college. I was going to eighth grade.

He wasn't home, but I left home. I went to college. And so other than me sitting in the stands watching him compete against North Carolina and then on the other side, him sitting in the stands watching me compete against Duke, I think only one time. And thank goodness that's the game that we actually beat Duke in four years.

That's the one game. He was in attendance and for me, that's always a special thing in Cameron. But, you know, over the years, there has been some playful banter, right? Before we became, you know, foes, schools in the ACC, but we've never sat down and watched the game together, no.

I don't know why that blows me away, but it is just kind of amazing. Did you root? Well, this is before I guess you went to UNC. So I'm sure you rooted for your brother and Duke when you were watching him as a player. Did he root for you and North Carolina?

That's a great question. I definitely rooted for him. Now, look, I have to be honest. Okay, I was rooting for him. But each time Jerry Stackhouse and Steve Wallace talked all over Duke, you know, my North Carolina bias and excitement would come out a bit. I was rooting for my brother and wanted Duke to win, which ironically, in his four years, I know he beat North Carolina one time. So I beat Duke one time, my Carolina teams, he beat North Carolina one time. But I was definitely secretly cheering for Steve Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse and Jeff McGinnis, guys that were in his class that I knew as a kid. I watched him compete against in high school and play with some of those guys and just how exciting they were.

Those three guys were a big reason why I wanted to be a North Carolina Tar Heel that class watching them play stat. She had to say definitely rooted for my brother. I cannot I cannot confirm or deny he was rooted for me. He was there. And when we did win in Cameron, he was in our locker room. He's the first one to give me, you know, a really big hug after that game and that's something I cherish forever.

Here's what's interesting. And I try to have as much fun and even maybe I once I once did an interview with Philip Rivers, who was the quarterback at NC State. And I was a Maryland grad. And I use one said, you know, you never beat Maryland. And I was never shy about like poking fun and things like that.

But I have such I have such great respect for both you and your brother. I mean, I know you don't come to North Carolina or come to Duke to struggle like, you know, you come here and it's it's win after win after win. So it's funny. It's not funny.

It's not it's the opposite. Funny that both you and your brother had similar experiences in terms of struggling, especially to beat your rival. He did play in a national championship game as a freshman, but it went the other way after that for various reasons. But I mean, you guys both deserved you were better players. You both deserved the you know what Armando Bacot is dealing with right now and what some of the legends of Duke dealt with with with their run. I wish I wish it had turned out, but I'm sure it made you both better people.

And I know you're both doing well. And I'm rooting like hell for you up in D.C. this week. I appreciate your time, Jason. Hey, thanks a lot for having me, man. Sometimes make you stronger.

They make you more appreciative of the good times. And, you know, we are appreciative of the things we're putting together in Pittsburgh right now and really excited about the opportunity we have going to D.C. this week. We will watch you in D.C. and then wherever they send you in the NCAA tournament, I am supremely confident that that is going to be the case. I appreciate your time. Tell your brother we said hello and I'll talk to you guys soon. We'll do it. Thanks a lot, guys. Thank you. Thank you.
