Don Waddell, Carolina Hurricanes GM and president, on where the team is at right now in their season and what can he tell us about the upcoming NHL trade deadline.

How quickly can he wash a game like Saturday and move on to the next one? The Canes aren’t likely to carry 4 goalies, so what is the plan with their goaltender roster? Is everything on the table or are there some things that are “untouchable”? Is there a specific area the Canes would like to address? How involved is Rod Brind’Amour in the decision making process?

How fast do you move past it? I know fans are still hurting, but how fast do you move past it? Well, I've always said you can't get too high with the wins and too low with the losses. You're going to have some of those nights and the unfortunate thing. We don't play until Thursday.

Get right back on the horse and try to get back in the wind column. But you know, it's was unfortunate. You know, I thought we let that one get away from us and which hasn't happened too much. In recent times, but you know, we can't change the outcome.

Now. We're going to figure out how to put it behind us and look forward to Montreal on Thursday night. And I know I said that it would have been great to play Sunday and just throw Piotr back out there. Because he had been he has been so good over the last two and a half months that something like that shouldn't be.

He shouldn't have to sit around with it for five days. I talked to Rod actually before the game and I just mentioned how good he had been. And I just assumed that, you know, maybe two months prior you guys were, you know, in the in the goalie market looking for potential trades. And he said we were never in the goalie market. Can you confirm that?

Yeah, no, I mean, let's face it. I was getting some calls, probably getting more calls and making, you know, when you get in that situation, right? We were confident that that at that time, right? It was only short term. And then he came back and had a run, a real good run there for us.

Ten games and had one maybe miscue. And we also knew that Freddie was making huge progress. You know, that wasn't an injury. You know, is it illness with the blood clots?

Yeah. Once he got cleared that he'd be ready to go. So, you know, it was never any panic around here. You know, our history of goal tying is all we've got in history. So we were just kind of content to say, Pat, you know, something fell in our lap that we couldn't say no to, then you'd have to look at it. But otherwise, we weren't out there actively pursuing to try to trade for somebody. And it wasn't people, you know, looking to help you out. It wasn't people like saying, Don, let me help you. They were looking to take advantage of you.

That's the way the world works. Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricane, joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. So let me ask this question because I know Rhonda was on the ice today.

Freddie is back practicing. It's you can't carry four. I guess you could carry four goaltenders.

I don't imagine you will. What is the plan when everybody is ready to get back on the ice and play? Adam Golden Studio with my man Coach Pete DeRuta Capital Financial Advisory Group.

People ask me a lot. When's the best time to start retirement planning? I always say first text Coach Pete. So the best time is yesterday. The next best time is tomorrow. And we'll do that. We can make it easy, simple and put you in control of your money. All you have to do is text right now and we'll put a plan together. No cost. No cost, which is great.

Total customized retirement plan is a $1,000 value for other people, but you get it free if you text right now. Text Adam to 600-700 for Coach Pete DeRuta. Yeah, pretty soon we'll have more goals on our roster than defensemen, but I think this week, obviously, trade deadline is Friday at three o'clock. You know, we'll see what the interest is around the league with some of our guys. And, you know, if there's something that makes sense, certainly we will look at it. And then if not, you know, we'll look at what our alternate plan should be, which obviously we all talked about already. So, yeah, you know, we can't again, you know, you're trying to do something. You can't force anybody, another team. They're going to have to want the player. So, you know, we'll, we'll, we'll play it out here. My phone's busy today and yesterday, so we'll, we'll see what happens in the next five days. Yeah, the kind, the way Spencer Martin has played, the chances of him sneaking through wafers probably is not, it's not good.

He has been spectacular. All right. Let me do you. I'm sure you have untouchable players on your roster. So if somebody said, hey, we want 20 or 74 or 37 or 24. Those guys are off the table. Wow.

I always say, you know, Kenny Allen calls and offers me McDavid for somebody, you know, I have to think, I have to think about it. Sure. No. Yeah.

You're right. There's, you know, we got the court players that have been here and we continue. They can guess where we want to go moving forward. So certainly there's a big list of guys that are pretty much untouchable in the off season. It struck, it caught me by surprise because this is, has not been a franchise that has delved into the free agent market at the top of the free agent market and Dimitri Orlov and Michael Bunting were certainly at the top of that this summer.

So when you guys dipped your toe in that water, I was a little surprised. But the philosophy has always been that you guys will not make moves for rentals. You're not give away futures for somebody who only has the route, the balance of this year left on a contract. But given the philosophy philosophical, I guess, somewhat change in the off season is everything on the table for you guys coming up this week.

I think we have to look at everything. I'm not saying we trade a first round pick for a rental. You know, if it was a player that we thought we could sign and keep, that's a different story.

But you know, we're, we're, we're dipping our toe, as you said, into everything right now and seeing what's available. You know, there's not a lot of players right now in the market that warrant probably the first round pick or so. And prices are still high, talked about in the last few days. And, you know, there's only been a few trades. It's not like it's, there's been 10 trades or 15 trades already.

It really has been three or four possibly in the last month. So, you know, it's my job as the general manager to make sure I stay in touch, get all the players available, what the asking prices are. And, you know, as the days dwindle down and there's players still on the market, you know, eventually prices will drop. And if they don't, then we have to make some tough decisions.

Don Waddell is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show. A specific area you would like to address? Well, we've said, you know, I mean, easier said than done, you know, if we could add to our goal scoring, you know, that would be number one. And, you know, it's not a ton of those guys that are out there are available right now. You know, we've been trying to make some hockey trades too with, you know, we'd like to get players with term back, but I would say if there's something that we feel that we would like to address, it would be definitely something that can score more goals. Is one year left on a contract?

So in other words, the year after this year, does that fall into the category of some term? Yes, for sure. Okay. Players that have one year left because you get two playoff runs with them too. So it's not like it's just one playoff run, you're done. So we would definitely look at that.

All right. Now, Rod has often kind of pined for a right-handed center. You really don't, you don't have any right-handed centers on the roster. You have right-handed players who maybe want to play center or can take faceoffs, but you don't have a right-handed center in the lineup.

But when we look at their strong side, they're running 48% or less, and our better face-off guys run better than that. So you gotta be careful. You might get a right-hand shot center, but you can't win face-off.

Have you really improved your situation? We've always talked about if a guy was available that was a good face-off guy that could sit in our top 12, then it's something we would definitely do. But as I sit here right now, there's not a lot of those guys out there.

It's heavy. How involved is Rod Brind'Amour in these types of I want this? Does he give you a Christmas list? Rod's great this way. Are we going to make a trade without talking to him?

Absolutely not. But there's so many conversations that go on that don't go anyplace. So I spare him for all the details until we get where we think we can make a deal. But Rod's the coach of our team. He wants to win just like all of us. And his suggestions are always taken very to heart because he wouldn't be making them if he didn't think it was something we could make our team better.

So, no. Rod's involved for sure. Final question for you, Don Waddell. And I say this knowing that he is not the only one who could use a contract extension, present company included. What's the status of any extension for the head coach? Yeah, we've had great talks, Rod and I, about it. And we decided just a short time ago, let's get through the trade deadline and we'll get something done.

It's not a concern of mine at all. The talks we've had have been very positive and it's just the timing of it. I was hoping to get it done maybe a couple weeks ago just because of travel and team gone and I wasn't with the team and we were playing a lot of games. We just decided to wait until after the trade deadline. Alright, you should be a package deal.

You and Rod together. Yeah. Alright. That's right, that's right, that's right. Thank you so much. Don Waddell, president and general manager of the Carolina Hurricanes. I'll see you Thursday. You got it, buddy.

Thanks a lot. Thursday, Hurricanes will host the Montreal Canadiens. Calling all North Carolina sports fans. Soon enough, DraftKings Sportsbook will be live in your state.
