Jim Daopoulos is very familiar with being on the football field and refereeing NFL games for 23 years, so what’s his opinion on what happened during the Lions and Cowboys at the end?

What happened at the end of the Detroit Lions vs Dallas Cowboys game where a player tried to make himself eligible, but apparently didn’t? What SHOULD have the player done? Is this on the Lions or the refs when it comes to who dropped the ball? What should've been done differently?

You too. You know, it's kind of interesting. It's not a difficult situation to back up a little bit. What normally occurs in the football game is before the game begins, the officials go in and talk to the head coaches. And one of the things they talk about besides timing and any issues, they'll say, Coach, do you have any unusual plays that we need to be aware of? We want to make sure that we're all on the same page if something's to happen during the game. You know, we don't want to get caught off guard. We want to make sure you're doing it legally. So I would imagine Coach Campbell, you know, got the grease board out and he put all his X's and O's up there and showed the officiating crew exactly what they were going to run and how they were going to run it.

You know, make sure that it was in legal formation. Now, something happened between that and the last 30 seconds of the game because when I watched that game, it appears to me that Brad Allen is talking to two players. I believe one was Decker was 53 and one was 68 and he had them off to the side. And that's where you usually, you know, you report to the referee and say, I'm an ineligible number and I'm going into an eligible position. And there are any number of players that can do that.

I mean, they're not limited to one player. Any number of players can say that I'm going to be going into an eligible position as long as they line up in an eligible position. So when that, that little conference broke up, Brad Allen started heading for the, the line of scrimmage and number 70, who probably had reported earlier in the game, he started coming that way. And Brad went to the line of scrimmage and he announced that number seven years is in a eligible position. And he kind of brushes his chest and that's the single defense because you want to make sure the defense is, you know, aware of who the eligible players are that have an ineligible number.

And, you know, I would imagine if Decker had reported eligible and he heard that announcement, he probably should have said, Hey, hold on a second, Mr. Referee. I'm the eligible player here, but it was a little bit of shenanigans that was going on between the Detroit lions.

And, you know, well, you know, and that's how they try to do it. They're going to try to sneak a play because it's a big play, but it appeared to me that the players were at fault. Uh, the coaching staff was at fault. And I even put a lot of a fault on the referees for the game management of that situation.

Um, that should never have happened. There's too much communication. The officials have this communication, which is called O to O, but that they have earpieces in and they can talk to each other. So each official should know, you know, who is the eligible player? This is my player.

I've got this player. This is the player that I'm responsible for. So there was some communication breakdown out there. And I know they're putting the responsibility on the players, but they also need to put the responsibility on the officials and the coaching staff. So I think everybody is a little bit at fault. So that was my, that's my take on it.

You know, it's really a simple situation. It's a simple play that all, all it has to do is be communicated properly. So by the way, Jim Diapolis, uh, for 23 years on field, uh, also off the field in the NFL, uh, has been involved in NFL officiating. This is my, my read on it Tuesday was I think the lions kind of got what they deserve for trying to pull a fast one. Uh, and try like the play itself is a difficult play to, uh, to defend, even if you know who the eligible players are, because there are eligible players, uh, with ineligible numbers on a lot of NFL plays. And it's always, you know, if they, if they get involved in touching the ball, it's always a surprise. So in and of itself, the play is deception. I think the lions might, might've just taken it a step too far.

Chumba casino.com. I don't disagree with you. I mean, you know, they, they were trying to run a play and they tried to cheat a little bit on it and you know, basically, you know, they, they ran the play. Uh, and you look at the play when they, when they scored and everybody's going, oh boy, that's a great play. But you know, did the, uh, did the Cowboys really realize that 68 was eligible?

Do you think they would have let him, you know, run free like that? Because that's one of the things, as I said earlier, the referee is going to say specifically, he's going to that line of scrimmage and all that's occurred while the clock was stopped. So there's no reason to rush through this thing, but he's going to go in the line of scrimmage and he's going to address the issue with the defense and say, uh, defensive players, this player right here, and he's going to point to him and he's going to say, he's eligible.

Now you better cover him. And for some reason, he never said that. So I would have loved to have been, uh, in a conversation with Brad Allen and the, and the two players, you know, before number 70 came in and reported, I would love to know what that conversation was. But again, you know, I had no idea what was said at that time.

Let me ask you one more thing. Uh, Jim Deopolis, 23 years in the NFL on the field and off the field involved in officiating, there was a situation. Now this guy has to go back eight, nine, maybe 10 years where the Ravens were playing the Patriots. I think it was a playoff game and the Patriots lined up a running back in an ineligible position. He just, they just lined up, they covered him up. So he was an ineligible player and he didn't go anywhere.

He stayed right there. Uh, and that created a lot of, uh, a lot of controversy. I remember John Harbaugh being mad about it. I don't know if they change rules because of it. Uh, how much of what we saw, uh, in this game is really about sleight of hand and, uh, is there anything we can draw, you know, any going back to that situation between the Ravens and the Patriots that, uh, I don't know, sheds any light on anything.

Well, you make a great comparison and that's exactly what happened. You know, the Patriots pulled the situation where they made an ineligible, uh, I made me, I'm sorry, they made an eligible ineligible, which was very confusing for the defense. And basically after that year, then that rule was changed. So that that's not legal to do that any longer.

So now that changed. And I don't think you're going to see much of a change. Uh, I think the league feels that, uh, you know, they put in a lot of the responsibility on the player. I saw some memos come out this week that the league has said specifically to the players.

You must, you know, it's your responsibility to make sure that you report and that they that your numbers are now. So I don't think you'll see a lot of change in that. Although you did see that change, you know, going from an eligible to ineligible because that was, that really made it confusing because then, then you try to separate numbers out there and it makes it, it makes it difficult on the defense. And the league doesn't want to do that. They, you know, they, they want it to be played straight up.

They don't want to a lot of stuff that's going to confuse you out there. No, no question about that. That was really Bill Belichick just showing how big a brain he had. That's all. And he had the rules. I mean, he did it exactly the way it was supposed to be done. And he went over with the officials before the game and he caught the Ravens in Harbaugh. And, uh, you know, you know, coaches don't like to be caught like that, but that's what happened.

If you're just not aware of something coming up and that's why the officials try to get to the, uh, the teams and the coaches before the game, because they don't want to be caught off guard or something like that. Jim Diapolis, uh, at referee, Jim D on Twitter or X or whatever, we're calling it these days. I have happy new year to you. I appreciate your time, sir. Same to you have a great year. Give me a shout sometime. Have a great day. Thank you. Love talking with a guy who has been in it.
