The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus' most well-known sermon, is a perfect sermon from the perfect Son of God. The Beatitudes, nine statements of blessing, are often misunderstood as a means of salvation or achieving social justice, but they are actually descriptive of realities of the Christian life. The blessed life is not about getting something from God, but about God working through us, and it is a life of spiritual poverty, mourning over sin, and persecution for righteousness, which is a stark contrast to the American dream and the prosperity gospel.
