The Bible describes death as a change of place and state, not an end to existence. The dead are still alive, and their personhood is retained in death. The distinction between the righteous and the wicked is whether their name is written in the book of life or not. The penalty for sin is death, but Jesus paid the penalty for sin and conquered death for all who believe in Him. Salvation is not granted because of good deeds, but because of acknowledging sin and needing a Savior.
