The Bible teaches that forgiveness is essential to the life and health of our souls, and that it is found in God's character. We are all debtors to God, and our indebtedness is so vast that it is impossible for us to clear it on our own. However, God made Jesus, who had no sin, to be sinned for us, to be indebted for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. The forgiven sinner must always forgive whoever has trespassed against him, and must do everything in his power to bring about reconciliation. The unforgiving spirit is a form of hypocrisy, and it is not simply harmful, but in the end, hopeless.
