On his first day as an Air Force pilot, Peter Braxton was in the air over the Atlantic when he received a call from NORAD, directing him to fly between 5,000 and 50,000 feet altitude, indicating that all airspace was clear. As he looked out the window, he saw the smoke rising from New York City, and his mission quickly shifted to refueling fighter jets armed with missiles.
