Today we have Craig DeRoche. And he is the president CEO of The Family Policy Alliance And Wow.
Somehow or another I got you the other two phone numbers, but I didn't get you blank.
So we also have Blaine Conzotti. And Phil Cochran with us today. And Phil Cochran wrote Lessons Learned at the Speed of Sound. And so. Um I'm curious, Craig, did I I mean Blaine, did I get you mixed up with Craig?
I'm Kinzadi, and I serve as president for Idaho Family Policy Center. The largest conservative policy organization in the state of Idaho, and the only Christian policy organization in the state. We are a state affiliate of Family Policy Alliance, which Craig. serves as president. That's where my confusion.
Oh, sometimes my notes are not good, and so I put down the wrong. name on my notes.
However, we are so blessed to have you on, Blaine. Uh and again There's a lot going on with Policy, you guys just met, like four hundred of you or something in Washington DC recently, right? Coming up, we have our Statesman Academy program. Which is put on by Family Policy Alliance and the Family Policy Councils across the nation, training Christian legislators on law and policy, communications training, biblical worldview training, really trying to provide them with the resources that they need. to serve the people well and serve the Lord well in the place where God has called them.
And so that's coming up. When is that coming up? That is this coming week in Washington, D.C. That coincides with the big social conservative family policy conference called SoConCon. And so it will be a big week next week in DC for sure for the Christian policy movement nationwide.
That's awesome. I'm glad to know that's coming up. And so we also have, again, Phil Cochran with lessons learned at the speed of sound. Phil. You were a fighter pilot?
Yes, yes, sir. For twenty three years I flew in the Air Force. playing fighters and instructing student pilots who are going to become fighter pilots in the near future.
Well, I know So many of us are terribly jealous. You know, that that just sounds like an amazing occupation to be a fighter pilot. It was a lifelong dream. My father flew Corsairs in World War II for the Marines and And I always dreamt of aviation and made airplanes when I was young, looked up at the sky, laid on my back looking at the sky when I was young, dreaming of. Flying nothing other than the F-16, and God was gracious enough to grant me my dream.
And 50 years after my father was shooting down Japanese aircraft, I was in that part of the world protecting the island of Japan and that region from. North Korean aggression. Wow. And so d have you had a chance to fly a Corsair yourself? No, wouldn't that be great?
Holy smokes. I as much as much as awesome as the F 16 was, I still look back to World War I and World War two aviation as being the pinnacle of the fighter pilot because you're man and machine against man and machine, none of the electronic geekery and beeps and squeaks and long range, beyond visual range missiles and things like that.
So those men were awesome aviators. Yeah, which is a little different than lessons learned at the speed of sound. But you have me totally enthralled to find out more about those lessons. And man, I've got to hear a little more about your dad as well. That, what a neat!
Heritage. Um and and what a brave heritage, because Yeah, like you said, that You know, you were going up against the Japanese Zeros at the time, were a very formidable aircraft, right? Right. Yeah. Yes.
But the course here actually was the on s the on The the bringing on of the Corsair changed the the Pacific Air War with its capabilities and such. Yeah, I had some horsepower. Yeah, but I'm like an F-16.
So cool. We're getting back to like, so speaking of firepower, right? Uh being able to help train these uh Congressmen and senators on family c policy, what a task because that stuff's complicated. Blaine? Yeah, yeah, it is.
You know, most states have part-time citizen legislatures. Where their House representatives or their senators in their state legislature. Have another job. They were never trained to be state legislators. And so it's really important that Christian conservative legislators fighting for the values that we all share receive the training that they need to be as effective as possible.
in their state house. And that's what the Statesman Academy program is designed to do, to provide them with those resources, provide them with those tools. That's where a lot of the family policy victories over the last several years have been taking place. Is because Christian state legislators come to State Smoke Academy, they learn about different. pieces of model legislation, different bills they can run, different ways to talk about it effectively that moves voters, that wins support, and ultimately that yields dividends.
When it comes to the victories that we've seen in the last several years on school sports, protecting fairness in school sports. Protecting kids from online pornography, ensuring that children who struggle with their gender are protected from irreversible. and harmful sex change drugs and surgeries. A lot of those victories have come from legislators who made their way through the Family Policy Alliance and Family Policy Council Statesman Academy program. You know, that's just brilliant.
Um but again, I I'm I'm amazed at what God you know, sets up. Bye. I never thought about it. Yeah, a lot of these guys, they're like insurance agents or whatever, and they become a state legislator, you know, based on, you know, they're active in the Republican Party or in the Democratic problem, you know, but they don't necessarily know the ins and outs of legislation and all that kind of stuff.
So, how amazing that you guys got in and did that. And then you know, that God blessed, like you like you talked about just recently, this decision. on on high school sports. You can see that you know It's really cool. It's kind of like, you know, when I think about it, Phil, they're like the fighter pilots.
Of the legislation because the technology. That's so true because, you know I appreciate what Blaine is doing and everything because one thing that Fighter aviation taught me is: you don't rise to the occasion, you fall back to your level of training. And the same thing is true spiritually. And we need, you know, God's ultimate form of government is from the ground up, from the inside out, and from the bottom up, not from the top down and the outside in. And so we need to train Christians to think.
Biblically, and to have a biblical worldview, if they're going to learn how to govern biblically, they first have to know and be disciplined in the Word of God themselves. Wow That's exactly right. I hadn't thought about that. But again, lessons learned at the speed of sound, you're going to fall back to the level of your training. Because again, when you you're up there in that cockpit w w in the technology that you have today, I can't imagine the complexities of what that pilot's got to face at the speed of sound, right?
Right. When you're looking at an engagement that you may be closing on each other at over 1,000 miles. an hour, 40 miles distance closes very quickly and before you know it you're locked in a phone booth. turretting and and burning and pulling G's and and so you have to be Disciplined and prepared, and know what you're going to do before the situation presents itself. And that's what my book is about is about training Christians to think biblically and to be disciplined because we approach our lives so casually sometimes as Christians, and the statistics are that very few people wake up in the morning and spend time in the Word of God and spend time in prayer.
And they launch out in their day and Then come home at night exhausted and plop down on the couch and scroll through social media or whatever. But as fighter pilots, we didn't just accidentally succeed. We prepared, we trained, we briefed, we executed. And then the most important part of the mission, you know, we would spend hours. Preparing for a sortie, and the average mission.
I hate to jump in, and we got a break coming up on you, Phil. I'm sorry. That's so awesome. We're gonna get to that end of the mission. We're gonna get to more about.

We have Blaine Conzati. He's the president and CEO of the Family Policy Council Alliance. Yeah. Stationed in Idaho, which I love because I'm actually originally from Idaho. And we also have Phil Cochran with us.
Lessons learned at the speed of sound. How exciting. I mean, wow, what a lineup. And so So Blaine. particular b branch is there in Idaho or is that of the whole country?
Yeah, so our Family Policy Council is out here in Idaho called Idaho Family Policy Center. Robbie, you might remember that back in the 1980s, Dr. James Dobson, who founded Focus on the Family, had a vision. For having a Christian public policy organization in every state across the country. And he launched ultimately more than 40 family policy councils all across our nation.
Idaho Family Policy Center is the one out here in the Jump State. I love it. I love it. I was born in Pocatello. Oh, yeah.
So a lot of people look at me and they go, Yeah, because, you know, not a lot of people in North Carolina from Idaho, but we got a few. No, I bet not. I bet not. I know a lot of truth. Listeners look listen to Matt Slick and that show comes out of Idaho as well.
You may not know that, but I do.
So you guys have where some of the Western states, it's a real struggle to find a Christian. Utah being one of those. How are things in Idaho? Idaho is one of those states where it is possible to get strong biblical policy reform across the finish line. You can't say that about our left coast states, about Washington, Oregon and California.
You can't say that about a lot of the nation. But Idaho is a place where there's fertile soil for the types of policy reforms that we're seeking. We've seen incredible success on that front. Whether protecting girls' sports, whether protecting girls in school bathrooms and locker rooms from biological men. Whether protecting kids from online pornography or protecting life, we've Effectively eliminated legal elective abortion in the state of Idaho in the last several years.
God's been really good, and Idaho really is leading the nation. When it comes to promoting God-honoring public policy, that's beautiful, wonderful, wonderful. And so you were just saying something, Phil, at the end of the, before we had to go to the break that was profound, right? Because so many of us go home. Uh you know, beat up or whatever and, you know, we just mindlessly watch T V or whatever because we need some kind of comfort.
Um but when you guys get back from a mission, you were describing that. I was very curious. I didn't I hated you got cut off by the brake. Hey, no worries. I as a fighter pilot, I can get to talking.
We come home, we relax, and really one of the biggest, one of the most important aspects of a sortie or of the F-16, of flying the F-16 was what we did after the sortie. We didn't just land and give each other a high five and say, okay, we'll do the same thing tomorrow, see you tomorrow. We actually took time to debrief that sortie, and we would take hours digging into what we did right, what we did wrong, what we could have done better, how we were going to improve the next day. And part of the encouragement in my devotional book is that we should be evaluating ourselves. We should be debriefing ourselves.
At the end of the day, how did I do? What am I going to do better tomorrow? How am I going to do it better tomorrow? Instead of just living our Christian lives passively, we need to live them disciplined and actively, growing to Christ in sanctification, not in our own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit working through us. but we still have a responsibility to examine ourselves and to press on as Christians.
That is awesome. You know, I got to tell you, that's just awesome. Um So in your book. You kind of have a devotional with some of the questions that we should ask ourselves. at the end of the day on how we did?
Yeah, every devotional, there's 40 devotionals in this book of the 180 or more that I've written. And each devotional is laid out in a manner you can approach it in the morning or evening without too much time. It's a verse followed by an analogy, something I learned flying at the speed of sound. And then a teaching of that verse and application back to the analogy and how we can apply it in our lives as Christians. And what I found being a pastor for 22 years is that I had church members, women, men, young women, young ladies coming up to me saying, I really appreciate your analogies and how much it anchors the truth of God's word in my mind and helps me to apply it throughout the week.
And then at the end of every devotional, there's four questions that we can ask ourselves to help grow in Christ and to improve in our next sortie. That's beautiful. I love it. Absolutely spectacular stuff.
Well, part of what you guys have not experienced in Kingdom Pursuits, we always play shenanigans because we've got to have a little fun, get the listeners to call in, because we do have some questions of questions for them to call. So clearly, it must be that sound is traveling faster than the speed of that light that's in front of you. Anyway.
Okay. What sound does a 747 make when it bounces? What do you think? You you Phil, you have a lot of airplane experience. I'm usually pretty good at these things too, but I'm running through it in my head.
This one's old. Yeah. Something like that. Actually, it makes boing. Boing.
Boing. Boeing. Boing. Okay, okay, okay. Got it.
Mm-hmm.

Yeah. I don't know, I don't have a wrestling frame, or this idea. It's usually... He has a check one too. I knew you'd like that one.

So. Getting back to our I Am I right that that blame that didn't the Supreme Court actually rule like this week? Yeah, it was actually a couple weeks back where the Supreme Court ruled that state laws protecting fairness in women's rights. School sports are constitutional. are allowed under Title IX, which of course protects equal educational opportunities.
For girls, not only in the classroom, but also on the school sports field. It's a monumental ruling, it really is. You know, Robbie, 27 states nationwide have passed laws to keep biological men. out of girls school sports. Idaho was the first in the nation to do it.
back in 2000. Since then, as I said, 26 other states have followed suit. It's really important because there are physiological advantages that men have over women, especially on the playing field. Advantages like larger lung capacity, larger airways, of course, much more muscle mass. Men can put on muscle more easily than women.
And that's really important for like explosive movement. Greater bone density, even physiological differences that we might not think about, like the hip shape, so the shape of the pelvis. Right, men have narrower hips, which gives them advantages in certain activities like running. And so we've seen all over the country where biological men who identify as female play on in girls' sports, take those championship titles from girls. And thankfully, the Supreme Court has said that's not going to happen anymore in states that have passed laws protecting girls' sports.

So You know, what an opportunity we all have to not only read this. amazing book, but then, you know, make an impact on the other people that's kinda like paying it forward, right, Phil? Amen. Yeah, that's absolutely right, Robbie. And one thing I was thinking about with what Blaine said before the break is.
There's too many people in our world today trying to create truth. We don't create truth, we discover truth. And I think that's why my analogies work so well with the Word of God, is because as a fighter pilot, I had to obey God's Physical laws, if I was going to be successful, I couldn't deny gravity. I mean, it was going to take over regardless if I wanted to redefine it or try and create a different rule for it than what God had created. And the same thing is true in our spiritual lives.
If we're going to be successful spiritually, we don't create God's truth. We discover it in His Word. And I think that's why the two relate so well together, because the same God created both of those.
Someone once said, all truth. Is God's truth. And so anywhere you find truth, God is going to be at the bottom of it or behind it all.
Okay. Yeah, I love what the 119 Psalm says about that, right? That his truth is going to be. Uh for eternity. And we'll know that at the end, everybody will know the truth, right?
And it says, thy word is true from the beginning, and it's also true at the end. And there kind of is how we know for sure.
Okay. Um that is truth. And that it's beautiful that the word in Hebrew, truth, Um Begins with the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet. It has the middle letter in the middle, and that ends with the last letter in the Hebrew alphabet to make that very point. And Jesus made it again when he said, I'm the beginning and I'm the last, but he's also the truth.
And so, you know, when he said, I'm the alpha and they'll make it.
So they all kind of come together in what you're saying. In such a reassuring way, like I can just rest on that, you know, feel like I guess if I'm flying at the speed of sound. I got to rest on something, right? I imagine there's a lot of truths that you are trying to hang on to. Oh, I mean I mean Trust, faith, discipline, perseverance.
All of that comes into being a successful pilot because there were times you couldn't see the horizon. But you had to trust your instruments. And there's times in our Christian lives that we can't see the horizon. God's word is a lamp unto our feet or to our path. It's not a spotlight.
So sometimes we're only seeing the next step in front of us, and we have to have faith that God has the chorus under control, and we just trust Him as we take one step in obedience to His Word each day. Yeah, and that's Unbelievably helpful when it comes to family policy, right? Because a lot of what you guys are trying to do is uncover the lies. Yeah, that's exactly right. I mean, I think we need to remember that God has given us rules for our good.
Right, and the moral law that he's created is the way he designed the system. the s the universe to work. And ultimately, when our laws reflect reality when our laws reflect God's Good and gracious design, people are able to flourish and we get to experience the blessings of freedom and we get to live under God's favor. And that's certainly the type of nation. That Family Policy Alliance and the Family Policy Councils are trying to build is one which recognizes God's good and gracious design so that.
Everyone can flourish. Yeah, that's absolutely Uh you know, and I I love that that God has put this on your heart. And so Um You know, it as you I'm just kind of curious, how in the world did you know, blame you all of a sudden, find out about this, get involved with it. Yeah, so I was raised in liberal Seattle in a family that you know, my parents weren't practicing Christians when I was growing up, and I was raised in that progressive mindset, and by the grace of God, I met a Baptist pastor who literally handed me a tract when I was 19 years old, and it changed my life. I met Jesus and You know, God is so good in how He transforms our lives and takes us off the path to ruin and puts us on the path.
with him, right? And he walks alongside us in that.
So Pretty quickly after becoming a Christian, I went to Liberty University where I majored in public policy. I've been in the public policy, Christian policy, family movement now ever since. And it's really exciting to see over the last ten years All the victories that this movement has racked up. You know, we've talked about Fairness, Women's Sports, we've talked about some of the other victories. But really, perhaps the most wonderful victory that we've seen in the last several years is on the issue of life.
protecting preborne life in the womb. As I said, here in Idaho, we've seen the elective abortion rate effectively drop to zero. You're seeing that in a lot of pro-life states where they have bans on abortion where they have significant protections for preborn babies. And I think we need to celebrate and praise God for the victory there because those are going to be thousands of little babies that will be able to live their lives and grow up and go to school and work and raise families because these laws protected them. And I think that's really important.
one of the one of the big victories this movement has achieved in recent years. Yeah, it's absolutely awesome. And so grateful that that God called you out of that and into what he did. And, you know, what a neat thing to know that your life is helping save. people in all sorts of different ways and And so I was very interested, Phil.
Um your life is It was protecting our lives, obviously, as you were in those fighter jets, but now you're a pastor. Where's your church? I pastored a church for twenty-two years, twenty-three years in Perkins, Oklahoma. Recently finished that work and now am working on planting another church. In that same area as well, but slightly about 30 miles from that one.
And yeah, so just, you know, God worked in my life as I was a fighter pilot. As I was in the military, brought me into church service as well, and then pastoring. and uh able to apply a lot of what I learned in the military uh to the Word of God and and to people's lives to change families as uh you know from from the inside out, which is kind of where the pastor's uh passion is, right? Oh, absolutely. I I love it.
It's That's just so cool. I I You know, and again, I I'm just dying to hear stories about your dad. I I you know, to talk to somebody you know, that actually got a chance to fly those planes. did your relationship with your dad, did he share some of that stuff with you?
So here is the rest of the story. My father died when I was three.
So I didn't know him well. He was actually an airline pilot for TWA, and his jet went down right before my oldest brother was ready to be married.
So it was a family tragedy that really affected our family in a great way.
However, what I learned through my life growing up as a young man is that God is a father to the fatherless. And he is faithful. And so I have seven children. And uh I've uh been thankful that um God has um Given me that opportunity to bestow the truth of his word into their lives. And one of the biggest lessons I learned as a fighter pilot was when my oldest daughter was three years old.
Um and I was looking at the fact that I'm fighting over in Japan or flying over in Japan unlike me and I could do the same thing to her. that happened to me when I was three. And I had to really learn to trust in the sovereignty of God, the fact that my paths, my days are ordered by Him long before I was ever born, and to rest in the comfort, like Stonewall Jackson said once, that I can be as safe in bed as I can be on the battlefield. Um and so uh God was gracious to me through those years. That's amazing.

Blaine, what did you want to get said today on the show when you knew you were lined up to that you haven't had a chance to get to? Yeah, it's a great question, Robbie.
So we as Christians are called to engage culture for Christ to impact our communities. impact our state and impact our nations for Christ. One thing that I tell churches all the time when I speak at churches across the state of Idaho. is a reminder that the Great Commission is a disciple of the nations. teaching them to obey all that Christ Has commanded and Christ has commanded so much when it comes to law, policy, economics.
criminal justice, all of these issues are issues that the Bible speaks to. And all of these issues were biblical issues before they ever became political issues. And so we as Christians have a responsibility to proclaim biblical truths. in those areas. And that's what Family Policy Alliance, the Family Policy Council in your state is trying to do.
We are working to build an Idaho, to build an America where God is honored, where religious freedom flourishes, where families thrive, and where life is cherished. And that really is essential to what it means to be a Christian in this age where God has placed us. Yeah, that's wonderful. What we're so grateful for what you're doing and for James Dobson's vision, right? And what God is planting around the country.
But the fact that there's only 26 states that have laws protecting, you know, it tells us the need for prayer for all of us, for those other states, that we could get behind this movement. What did you want to make sure you got said today about lessons learned at the speed of sound we hadn't had a chance to get to? I appreciate that, Robbie.
I think I mentioned it briefly in the beginning, is that the Christian life is not meant to be lived passively. And again, as fighter pilots, we had to be disciplined We had to execute and we had to evaluate. And we had to know about the tools of our trade. I had to know about my jet. I had to know everything about my jet.
There was a Bible of the F-16. It was called the Dash One. And we had to know that Bible, that dash one, inside and out, if I was going to be successful as a fighter pilot. And as Christians, our dash one, our Bible is the Word of God. And if we're going to be successful as Christians, we have to know it inside and out.
But not just know it, because we know knowledge puffs up, you know, but to live it and to execute a mission every day that takes us closer to Christ, that we are so enamored by him that we are kept on the proper course of our lives, which is to glorify God and to joy him forever.
So every decision we make should lead us through the route of our lives, just like I had a route that I flew in the F-16. It should lead us along a course that ultimately ends in Christ and in the glory of God. That's so beautiful. I love the guy who um wrote the Uh the story of Eugene Peterson biography. He said that he had a conversational intimacy with the Word of God.
Like, wow. Bingo, that's it. When you were talking about Yeah. And I imagine if I was flying an F-16, I'd want to have some kind of conversational intimacy with it. But there wasn't a God behind it, right?
When you're reading the Bible, it is him. And you go to those passages and they speak to your soul. Um and they keep speaking. Ah, because they're so real. I love that, Phil.
Probably if I could say one more thing. Church and Family Life is who published this book. And it pairs up with Blaine so nicely because they're focused on building strong families and strong churches through the truth of God's Word. And those men that go forth and women that go forth from those churches then are the ones that can take the public square and the culture of the day for the glory of God. Absolutely.
Um How God put you guys together. Actually, I'm like, man, how cool is this? It's absolutely amazing. I'm a little disappointed that nobody thought my riddle was extremely easy today. Didn't you think so?
Nick, it's crazy, right? I mean, you would think that, you know, the sound that changed the temple to a house of prayer was changed, right? As Jesus turned over. The tables. It sounded like a stampede in there.
The change was hitting the floor. You can imagine what that may have sounded like. But the fascinating thing about that is, we're talking about what we're talking about. Is it when you think about it, if your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit then your house is to be a house of prayer. Your body.

Think about spending some time in your house of prayer because that's where really you can have some amazing journeys to find out more about Family Policy Alliance or lessons learned at the Speed of Sound, you know, so much neat stuff. that God is doing.
