Whitney's struggles with patent infringement and his eventual failure to deliver on a contract to produce muskets for the US government are often left out of the narrative. Meanwhile, his inspiration for interchangeable parts came from firearms, not his cotton gin, and he even faked it to impress Thomas Jefferson.
