Martin Luther was born to a family of peasants in 1483 and was baptized the next morning. He learned discipline from his parents and went on to study law, but his heart was not in it. He discovered the scriptures at the age of 20 and was amazed to find books he had never heard of. He became a monk and later a priest, but his views on salvation and the church led him to write the 95 Theses and challenge the authority of the Catholic Church. He was excommunicated and went into hiding, but continued to write and preach, eventually translating the New Testament into German and marrying a nun.
