That's 1-800Flowers.com/slash SXM. GAAAAAAAA Good morning, everybody. Welcome into the Winklerverse. I'm Bart Winkler. We are coming at you live on a Wednesday morning.
It's early. It's uh well Relatively speaking, depending on it's early for me to do a show. It's 8.39 in the morning. Couple of reasons I'm doing it in the morning. I was gonna do one at night.
After the Brewers Cup series wrapped up. but I think I may have a special guest for that tomorrow.
So, I'm going to do it tomorrow. Also, I want tonight, I want to. Tonight, I just want to have a happy place, Hemp Seltzer, and watch Spurs Thunder. Um So that's what I'm gonna do tonight, along with the Brewers Cubs. along with the brewers cubs So that's What I'm going to do there.
Happy Place Hemp, as you know, promo code BART, 25% off each and every order at happyplacehemp.com.
So I want to talk some NBA because these conference finals have been nuts. And I want to talk some Brewers and Cubs because this is a series that has been very interesting down at Wrigley. And I am having. Overall. A difficult time.
with what these rivalries are. I am not equipped. For these rivalries, even though. The Brewers Have like Got the Cubs number. For the last However, many years.
Winning these divisions. Right? They have it. They have it all over. They're on top of the world with the Cubs.
Cubs won that World Series in 2016, so they can throw that back at us. But other than that. They are right now. The little brother. In this relationship.
So. We beat him in the playoffs. They took our manager, and it doesn't matter. They spend all this money on these guys and they continue to win, and the Brewers just. Patch work together these rosters, find these guys.
We've known about Jacob Mizarowski and we've been excited for him for years. But if you're a Cubs fan, I mean, you're not. You're not following other Teams farm systems. That's one thing about baseball. You're not following other teams.
Farm systems.
So this guy comes out, and all of a sudden. Oh, he's dominated. I do have some. Guest plan for today? This one was impromptu.
It's Tim Shea. Mm-hmm. Hi, Bart. How's it going? Good.
What's going on? You begged me to send the link. Wow. You know, sometimes you just sit there, and sometimes, you know, you lead me on with something.
So. I can never tell with you. I can never tell what mood you're in. You're in a cranky mood, I can tell this morning. You said send link, exclamation point.
Now you got something to say. I know, and then you probably, and then you leave me with a sentence or two, and then we get into it. But you just sat there. Yeah. And let me let me fail once again, Bart.
Hey, what I'm discussing. Oh, what? I do like how you. I know the person behind the Twitter account that you. Retweeted Confor Confordo season.
Yeah, what did I say? What did they say?
Something about their little brother? Yeah, pretty much. Is that not really a Cubs fan? No, it is. It is.
He's truly a Cubs fan. Yeah, this tweet was like, we're little brother, we suck. Why don't we admit it? Yeah. Every year we, you know, since 2017, blah, blah.
So you know the, you know the first time you know? Oh, congratulations. Jesus, rubbing elbows with the elite. I wouldn't say I wouldn't say the elite.
Okay. He's a little shit talker, but anyway. I understand you are talking about the brewers.
So, and I don't understand why you don't like these games. I don't like that the rivalry is, it's not a rivalry. It's not. It's one-sided and it has. But not even that.
Here's what I was thinking the other day. If I didn't spend so much fucking time on Twitter. I don't I wouldn't be affected. I would just have watched the game on Monday, been happy. I would have watched.
But what are you affected by? Like, there's nothing. We We own this team. Yeah, I'd say our bigger bigger rival might be the Dodgers. Or Someone that no, our rivals, the Cubs.
Sure, our rival's the Cubs, but. It's one-sided. They have to win too. Yeah, but they then they always twist losing. Wow.
Like the L flag and your ba your baseball teams protecting the honor of your football team. I thi I think they're starting to lose that that theory or or they're starting to lose that hope this week.
So I I don't I I I think it's one-sided. I don't, sure, they're a rival in distance and in division, but. I think we have better games against the dot.
Well, hope hopefully. this year. Once we reach the playoffs. Yeah. Do you remember the very first episode of the new Bart Winkler show podcast?
No, when was that? Like a month after I got fired. Oh, yeah, I do. I do remember you. Yeah, I mean, I don't remember the exact first show.
whatnot but i do remember When it all started. Yeah, it was you and me. Yeah. And Toby Altizer. Let's go.
I was eating hot dogs the other day on the field. I was eating some hot dogs. I didn't know Tim Shea was going to be here. I would have dressed up a little bit better. I didn't either.
If I knew he was going to be here, I wouldn't have done this. Yeah. Mew. Yeah. Tim, because I don't, I'm.
The Brewers-Cubs rivalry, Toby, I don't like it. It's too much for me, even though right now the Brewers are on top because I don't like Packers Bears. I don't. I don't want the Bulls to be good because then they're going to invade Milwaukee again. I'm just.
I'm so tired of them acting. Like the little brother. But then They're not because there's five more million of them. That they can just bully us no matter what happens. And then we beat them in the playoffs and somehow.
We lose because of that stupid flag. Not stupid flag. Yeah. Yeah, it's uh it's annoying. And uh I try to tell everybody out here why.
We Milwaukeeans hate Chicago so much. And it doesn't matter because it seems like it only matters to that corner of the world. But uh It does matter. I try to spread the gospel out here as much as possible to let people know that Chicago sucks. The Cubs, I love Chicago.
Yeah. Is the rivalry between the Nationals and Orioles like really big or no?
Well, they don't ever, they play six games a year. Yeah. No, it's not very big. I mean, it's probably like Brewer's Twins. Like, okay.
No, I mean, the difference is like the Nationals didn't come back till 2005.
So most of the people that were big baseball fans before 2005 were Orioles fans.
So there's still a big part of the fan base that. You know, the some have come over to be the Nationals fans, but they still cheer for the Orioles. You know, when they're not playing each other, is it like Orioles and Commanders fans? Like, we have Cubs and Packers fans. Yeah, there's plenty of that.
Absolutely. I know you hate that. I do. I mean, I hate it because I was one of these people that grew up watching the Cubs. Everyone says the same thing.
I grew up watching the Cubs. And that's why I like, yeah, I did too. They were on TV more than the Brewers. Yeah, I know.
Okay, the 80s, the 80s baseball, that like my first Brewer team that I really was attached to was the 92 team. And so I like both. And then the Brewers switched to the National League, and every cub part of me. I just immediately threw in the trash like there was no thought to it. But everyone else is like, well, no, I watched five games with my grandpa before he died.
Yes, yes. I mean, I did too. What the fuck? It's like people from out of southeast Wisconsin were all Cubs fans because of WGN.
So. I know five people have been in that exact. same situation that you were.
Well, they were on TV more. We didn't get it. I'm you know, a lot of times I'm surprised these people in the way western part of the state. My Like the brewers instead of the twins because they're so close. Why are you?
I gotta go. I'm getting looked at. Good. Get out of here. Goodbye.
Love you. Love you too. Bye. Bye, Don. Good to see you.
Good to see you, man. That was a nice little throwback to the first ever episode. Yeah, nice little cameo, Tim Shea. Yeah, I don't really know how long I've been doing this. Too long is my answer, but.
Okay. You know how often I tell people about our uh chair experiment and uh our chair correspondent, Tim Shea? Yeah. I'm like, you know, uh. The Bucs were actually down 2-0 in the NBA Finals and Bart was putting out chairs for the parade.
Yeah, even I'm glad I did that. Um, because like even when people, um, Like I've corresponded with people, let's say. That I have publicly hated. Yeah. And I've said, like, hey, you know, if you ever want to come on, or I got to bury the hatchet or whatever.
And sometimes a lot of the answer is. Yeah, I'll think about it. I don't know. Love what you do with the chairs, though. It's like, but now that was five years ago, I need a new stick.
Yeah, you gotta come up with something else. Need the bucks to be good again. I need the Bucks to be good again. I tried the shtick of playing victim for being laid off twice, but no one seems to care. Your shtick is like eating as much food as you can lately.
What's going on with you? Give the people a life update on Toby Altizer. Yeah, just working out here in DC, doing all the fun sports media stuff out here, working at 1067, The Fan, doing some Nationals post-game shows. Yeah, the hot dog eating thing was there was a hot dog day at Nationals Park, and I I had no idea that they were doing. A media.
Hot dog eating contest during the game, and they had like a counter-up on the video board or the TVs around the press box. You know, naturally being a little competitive myself and overweight, I was like, oh, this is something I could actually win.
So, you know, I was like, I'll eat a couple of hot dogs. And then it turns out I had to eat eight hot dogs to win. Eight, eight hot dogs. How in eight innings or the whole game? Yeah, like eight innings.
How did that feel? Not good? Not good at all. Did you like eat him normal? Did you do like the dip?
thing. No, I wasn't doing that crap. No. We're just eating hot dogs. What did you eat 50 of that one time?
Uh shrimp. Shrimp. Blackened shrimp. And how is that? Um That was good.
The shrimp were good. I mean, after a while, it's like, all right. you know But no, it was good. It was Toby versus Terry. I think it was during the Packer game.
And Out here, I was the Terry guy. I was the one that was advocating for him to get paid and all that, which isn't all that um different from when I was in Wisconsin when I was also the Terry guy.
So, you know, we came up with a Challenge that we were going out to a bar on Friday for a show that has really good shrimp, and the deal was I had to one-up Terry, whatever his yardage total was, and the Packers. Commanders game, I had to go one more, and I think he had forty nine, so then I ended up doing like fifty-one just to be one better or whatever. What if he had 115 yards? I would have been dead of mercury poisoning. Do you feel like you've pigeonholed yourself into the eat guy?
Uh I didn't think so until you just brought it up.
Well, I either, when I see you, it's Toby eating. Or, like a picture of Nationals Park because you're at a game. Yeah, I got to always do that. Yep. Or when James Wood homers.
Oh yeah yeah. Yep. I mean, I directed him because of you.
Well, great. I mean, you're pretty pretty man. You're pretty happy right now, that's for sure. I mean, my thing is if that's the three things I'm known by, I prefer one of them to be gone, but the other two, like Nats Park and James Wood, great. I don't even have any idea how the Nationals are doing.
Much better than you would expect. One game under five hundred currently. Oh All right, Braves atop the east there.
So, the current bit that we're looking for in our afternoon show out here is: if the Nationals get above 500, we're just like four blocks away from the center field gate at Nationals Park. If they get above 500, the next day we're hosting a live parade on the radio down to Nationals Park from the radio station. And the bit I'm going to do is I'm going full uniform. Eye black. baseball pants, tall socks, everything.
Okay. So Good luck. Yeah. Yeah. Um, how else are things going?
Great, man. It's been a lot of fun getting into the. This is just off-air chatter now that. But I had you pop on live, so that's all good. Um Nationals stuff has been really, really cool.
So that's been a lot of fun. First year doing that. The post-game show on the network.
So pretty cool. And You know, covering rookie minicamp a couple of weeks ago was fun, so it's been great. The sports scene out there right now, things seem a little more up. Then maybe, I mean. you know, the commanders, we'll see what happens with them.
What's their over under? Like Eight. Uh I don't know what their over-under is. I haven't looked at that, but uh Yeah, I mean, everybody's in love with the Giants now in that division. Yeah, I don't get it.
Everyone's in love with the Giants. Everyone thinks the Eagles are going to come back down to earth, and we all know what's going to happen. The Eagles are going to win like 13 games. Yeah. Yeah.
That's going to be the annoying part. I'll have to look at what that over-under is, but yeah, I mean, it feels pretty good about where the commanders are at. I mean, I think most people are on board with the Sonny Styles pick. It stinks that they didn't have a full complement of picks because they could have used them, but. I'm just questioning whether they have a true number two receiver to go alongside Terry in the offense, but You know, they're going with new coordinator on both sides of the football, and we'll see.
I mean, I think Jaden will be better if he stays healthy. And if that's the case, then that fixes a lot of your problems. I think it showed last year. That week two game against the Packers was kind of like the beginning of the end, which is terrible that it was week two. But that's kind of what I was thinking.
That was a quick little pee. Yeah, yeah. It was like, all right, Jaden's already nicked up, and little did we know that that was going to be the. the entire season, so that sucked. Are you like still following my DC defenders?
Somewhat. Jordan Tom, who's out for the season. Yeah, what the hell? He's their guy. I know.
We've had the championship trophy or whatever in studio and stuff.
So. We should have invited you out. I still have like Five pieces of clothing with the defenders. Carrielle Jones. Cheat code Jones.
I have a Cheat Code Jones shirt. And then The one I wear the most, I wear it to bed a lot. It's a long sleeve. It's got the D logo here. Yeah.
It's gray and it's red. Um, and it I have a lot of dingy shirts. That like My wife would never want to see again. This is one of them. This Tennessee shirt I have that I bought at a Thrift store in 2002.
But it's like one of these shirts that no matter what my body does, it fits me.
Okay, perfect. When you can find a shirt like that, it fit me at 180, it fit me at 230. Sick fits me now at 199.9999999. It's great. But 'cause I got a lot of shirts and she lets it go a little bit 'cause okay, he's Um scrub.
But this one she said something about, and that Defenders one, she said, because it is like really loose and gross. Defenders, uh.
Well, they are gross, so. I'm also wearing a big D on my chest. That kind of looks weird. To bed. Yeah, I'm wearing a big D on my chest.
In bed. Yeah, Cardell Jones, he was their quarterback the XFL year. When I got all that merch, because I talk about this, but Dicks had like they never thought the XFL was coming back.
Well, I bought $50 of things for I got 11 items for 50 bucks. Oh, well, there you go. I still rock my St. Louis Battle Hawks, rock the Dome shirt. I had an LA Wildcats hat that I think I've moved on from There was another team I had something of, but DC's always going to have a tie to the Battle Hawks because of Taylor Heineke.
Yeah, you just retired. I know. What a legend. What a great dude. How about the uh Wizards?
Number one pick. Dude. It's insane. I didn't think there was any chance that they were going to get the number one overall pick. They seem to always get screwed with the lottery, and this time it worked in their favor.
My least favorite bit that we do in sports media, Bart, is immediately they win the number one overall pick the next day. Hey, you think they should trade it? I'm like, ugh. Good gosh, can we just like enjoy? Talking about AJ DeBonza or Darren Peterson for a couple of minutes before we're like, Hey, do you think they should call Utah right now?
Do you think they should get on the phone phone with Memphis and maybe consider moving down? Like, yes, this is a good draft. We get it. But like, can we just enjoy The fact that they won the number over one overall pick for once.
So that's been a big discussion out here. The scuttlebutt is. A.J. Dobonso. Yeah.
The scuttlebutt out here is uh AJ DeBonsa. Um the jazz owner is a big donor at BYU. And A.J. DeBonsa has now played a year of high school basketball in Utah. He played at BYU because a large.
You know, part of the money coming from BYU is from the donor who is also the jazz owner. And so the rumor is they're going to want to trade up to one to try to get them. And so Wizards fans immediately go, All right. Give us Ace Bailey, who the Wizards were big on last year's draft. And then We'll get Darren Peterson with a second overall pick.
So that's the big debate: would you rather that or just go ahead and take A.J. DeBonso? That's the big thing. But it's fun to actually be talking about the Wizards, and I think they could be competitive.
Next year, I tell people out here all the time, I'm like, man, the most fun I've had in radio was covering that Bucs run and being able to talk about that team every day, every day. We're, you know, breaking down everything the next day. Like, we haven't talked basketball. Much less like breaking down an individual game seriously in DC in years.
So I would love for that to be the case. Do you um You covered the game. Game six? Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
You and Sam? Me and Sammy. Yeah. You got me into game three and game six. Yeah, that was the nicest thing I ever did to anyone.
Yeah, and then I went to Sunday Night Baseball, and that was a bridge too far. Because I could have gone, but I wanted to. I don't want to say get drunk.
Okay. Mm-hmm. I wanted to be out with the people.
Well, you and Rami were out with the people, that's for sure. Yeah, and I bought you Taco Bell. Yeah, that was uh, and I ran the board at what, 2 to 5 a.m. with you sleeping on the couch. Yeah, that was a good night, though.
Yeah, fantastic night. I still have not regretted not being in the building.
So if if it's five years out and I haven't had that regret yet. I think I'm clear. Yeah, I mean, I mean, if you're not going to be in the building. The next best spot to be is anywhere in the Deer District for that. And like I said, you know, the deer district.
I see those shots and I'm like, I was there, but I was like at Uncle Buck's in a well, still. I mean, I was in the alley, but I had. Room. Yeah, but still, I mean I don't know that we'll see anything like that again. Obviously, the deer district has now been, you know, stuff been built up around there, so there's not as much room, but.
I don't know how many places, especially for basketball. I mean, there's the whatever they call it in Toronto where they have some of that room, but the amount of people that were down there for that BART was insane. Yeah, I think it's once in a lifetime 'cause um Not only did you have the Bucs win a title for the first time in 50 years. And For a lot of people that were there, they didn't even experience the 80s bucks that went to the playoffs every year, but you know, never did anything. The last great team was 2001.
And then you also had the pandemic like easing up. But then you and you still didn't have SummerFest that year, I don't think.
So this was the celebration. This was. A chance for and all of Milwaukee was there.
Well, and it was because of the seasoning being moved around, it was July, right? Yeah. So, you know, sometimes it can still at times, I guess it's usually June, but regardless, like July, middle of the summer, actually makes me want the NBA calendar to move back a month because of that. I thought that. That was perfect.
The way that that ended, the timeframe, it was all great. Yeah, I would like some of these calendars to move a little bit. I still want MLB to have a 17-game season. I think that would be fun. Wouldn't that be awesome?
Just for a year, just to try it. The amount of pitching changes in each game. I kind of my new thing is I kind of want college to move to spring.
Okay. I don't think I I don't like both going on at the same time. I'm getting a little sick of the NFL taking over every day of the week. Yeah, but when does that bubble burst?
Well, and immediately everyone's response is like, Well, you're just going to watch the game anyway. And I'm like, I know, that's the problem. Like, I want to have a random Wednesday night where I can be like, All right, I got nothing going on tonight. I can be an absolute slob and. you know, watch whatever or go to a movie or whatever.
Just went a night off. What was the movie that was so bad? What was the movie? It was so bad, and then, oh, Morbius. Yeah.
And then people online were like, It's Morbid time, and then they were just joking about it. But then the studio's like, Oh, we got to put it back out, and then it did terrible. I think, like, When we're like sitting around, because last year I remember the Night before Thanksgiving, there wasn't anything on. Yeah. And people are like, oh, it'd be cool if there was a game.
Okay, so the NFL is like, oh, let's put a game on. And I think they are going too far. But we're still going to watch. I mean, there's a game New Year's Eve now. But that's a Thursday anyway.
Yeah, I mean, like, I have no problem with that. I don't have an issue like play games, you know, but just don't take over every night. It's it's again, e everyone's gonna watch it 'cause it's the NFL and most of our lives revolve around it.
So we kind of just do whatever they tell us to do, but It's kind of nice to have a night off sometimes, just to be able to relax. Jake says the flatness of Toby's brim dwarfs Bart's brim envy. I become a flat brim guy. I've always been a flat brim guy. I like it.
Do you have any idea what this hat is? 43. Uh no. It's George Bush. Oh, is it?
No, it's the NASA. Yeah. The nasty. Let's go. Let's go.
Remember to always be you. That's sick. Nigeria flag. That's sick. I like that hat.
Was that a giveaway? Sure. Yeah. That's good hats. I just got a picture.
From somebody And the hat is already popping up. This was a giveaway back in March. But the hat is already popping up at a goodwill. Who is? They saw it.
in the wild. At a goodwill. The Nationals gave away a hot dog hat and said it's a bad day to be a hot dog, and people are selling one eBay for nice amounts of money already. That's tough. There we go on the Dan Shaney YouTube stream.
We got the 43 hat. Yeah, there's a lot of Bucks gear there. There's a lot of Bucks gear at this Goodwill. I see a lot of giveaway Buck sets. I think that white and purple one was a Pat Coniton one.
Yeah, hey, pro tip, never go to the Bucks Pro shop. Ever. Goodwill has you covered. Look at this. This is one goodwill.
That's insane. I mean, if you need any bucks gear, figure out which goodwill that is. I don't know which one this is. But Jesus. It's one thing, too, if it's all like knockoff stuff.
Like, obviously, those are giveaway hats. Nice shirts. That shirt in the front is a legit Nike. Shirt. That's a $39.99 shirt at the pro shop.
That might be more than that, Bart. This green hat up there is 50 bucks. Yeah, no kidding. Wow. Maybe I'll go to good.
Maybe I'll hit some good. Is it a bad sign that people are giving away their good bucks gear?
Well, that's my main That's my main theory on why Giannis is going to get traded. One, because It's time. Yeah. But the other is. We've got a new owner now.
And we We've got Jimmy, like, I don't think it's still sunken yet. The Jimmy Haslam. Yeah. Owns the box. I don't think it's sunk in yet.
And What did he do with the Browns? Made a big splash. Got to Sean Watson. Didn't work out. But he's probably still gonna start week one.
And I think that They're not If you're a Bucks fan, whose jersey are you buying right now? Ryan Rollins. I didn't take it. No one's buying his jersey. They had a nice little dame.
Pop where they sold a bunch of shit dame.
Now, if you go to if you go to Goodwill. You see a lot of dame stuff at Goodwill, man. Yeah, it's funny. He thought he'll send out an email like, hey, special clearance day. Everything's $3.99.
It's all dame. It's all dame like keychains. It's funny because uh I tell people out here all the time. They're like, hey, Giannis is getting traded. And I'm like, this is the Shams, usual bit.
Watch. It's going to pop up every time that nothing's going on. Here it comes. Here comes the propaganda that he's going to get traded and nothing's going to happen. They're like, no, no, it's going to happen this time.
Like, no, no, no, nothing's going to happen. And then it came up this time. And They're like, oh, Sean's doing his thing again. I'm like, actually, I think this one might be real. Yeah, but that that's what like.
People are annoyed by it, but We didn't start this. He's been content for 10 years now. We'll see how this series plays out. And I wanted to talk about the NBA conference finals with you. Just first of all, how great they've been.
I jack these Images from DraftKings. Um hashtag not an ad. But they did a good job. Like, here was the game against the Spurs and Thunder. Just how close it was throughout the entirety of that game.
And then Wemby takes that Steph Curry-like shot, which Then somebody found that video where it was like the exact sequence that happened in a game between the Warriors and Thunder all those years ago. Then the Knicks game last night, it looked like that was going to be. Cavs and then the Knicks go on this insane run. Like 20 to 2 or something. Um And then so here's the graphic on that.
And they were down 93, 71. They tie the game, go to overtime, and then. Just boat race him from there.
So, these conference finals have been off to an incredible start, and they're on broadcast TV.
So, people are actually watching them. That's good. Yes. But if the series You know, a lot of times. The winner of game one, like, oh, the Knicks are going to win now.
Oh, the Spurs are going to win now, you know, after game one. But If the Spurs do win. Do the thunder find themselves? In the same situation as the Warriors. Where they're like.
We can't beat LeBron now. And then they got KD. Do the thunder say If we can't beat Wemby. We go get Yannis. Yeah.
It's interesting because Wemby. Because they'd be a team that has like a lot of these teams don't have the packages.
Well, there's just not a lot of people that could defend Wemby, and Giannis would be one of those guys. I mean, Wemby's unbelievable when he gets going 41 and 24 in game one. You know, it's an interesting, like, SGA gets awarded the MVP award before that game, and then Victor Wembanyama is like, yeah, screw that. I'm the better player, and just goes out there and dominates like that. That's incredible.
Just to see him be able to play the game the way that he does. Have you gotten to see him play in person? Because he's the one guy I would say, like, to me, Shohei. When he's pitching and hitting, which this year he's pitching, but not hitting when he pitches, but when he's pitching and hitting is maybe the most must-watched guy in sports, the dude that you have to just see to like. Understand the size of the way that he played everything.
Like, Seeing Wemby in person is unbelievable. He doesn't look real. And then he's shooting threes, handling the ball. You're like, what the heck is this?
So. When he gets going, there just truly isn't, there aren't many guys like him, if any at all. And matter of fact, the Thunder have a guy that would be a clone of him in a lot of ways, and Chet Holmgren, but he's not nearly the player that Wemby is. And, you know, people are trying to be like, hey, Chet, maybe you should take this a little more seriously. Like, Wemby clearly doesn't like you.
Wemby's clearly motivated to win the series, obviously, but. Maybe take it a little more personally and try a little harder. But Wemby just dominant. And when he gets going, like, what do you do? I'll have to get I have to get to see him in person.
I haven't seen him. Yeah. I saw him play against the Wizards. Which, you know, anyone looks impressive against that team the last couple of years. But He had nine straight points or something like that.
Came down, knocked down back-to-back. It was eight straight points. Came down, knocked down back-to-back threes in transition. And then the third time. backs guy down in the post and then hits a fade away jumper and you're like You can't do that at 7.3.
That smoothly. And yep. There he goes, doing his thing.
So, who are you taking at one? What are you going to do? A.J. DeBonsa is who I would take. I like size.
You can clip that if you'd like. Yeah. I like to do it. Yeah. Yeah, so we've got some great clips from this one.
I like uh I like Debansa. That's where I would go. I think He's a little bit safer. But I think him and Peterson are like the same tier. And I think they're similar players.
And the crazy part about this year's draft, I think There's like five or six guys that I think have. pretty similar ceilings like It wouldn't be shocking if Caleb Wilson is just as good as A.J. DeBonsa in three or four years. I don't know that it'd be all that shocking if You know, like Acuff. I know there's big...
questions defensively, but I don't think it'd be shocking if he's averaging 20-plus points a game. And we're talking about, like, I don't know that Darren Peterson's that much better than him, right? It's like. I think the reason you go to Bonsa or Peterson, one of those two guys, is probably more instant impact, but and really high ceiling still. I would go to Bonsa personally.
What about that trade scenario? I mean, it's interesting because Ace Bailey is someone that they really, really wanted. And he never got to them in the draft, so they didn't get a chance to take him. But. I mean, if you got Ace Bailey.
And Aaron Peterson, you get the size that I'm talking about, and Aaron Peterson. That's pretty enticing, but. I just think that The Wizards aren't lacking on rotation players right now. They have guys that can fill a role. They just need the dude to build around.
Now, Peterson might be that guy, but if they think DeBonsa is better, I would just take the better player. And Doug. There's nowhere I wouldn't go to help someone customize and save on car insurance with Liberty Mutual, even if it means sitting front row at a comedy show. Hey, everyone, check out this guy and his bird. What is this?
Your first date? Oh, no. We help people customize and save on car insurance with Liberty Mutual together. We're married. Ah!
Me to a human, him to a bird. Yeah, the bird looks out of your league anyways. Get a quote at libertymutual.com or with your local agent. Liberty, liberty, liberty, liberty. The Wizards roster right now is weird.
Yeah, I mean like they have they have guys I know, but it's like Oh, that guy's on the Wizards? Yeah, D'Angelo Russell. Yeah, oh, that He's on the wizards and then like Um, who's who's who's the pick a few years ago? Oh, Alex Sarr. Oh, yeah, I remember him.
Sarr was awesome this year. Anthony Davis, how many games did he play there? Four? Zero. And now there's talk that he might not even ever play a game because he's like making comments, like, yeah, I want to contend.
I don't know how you can go from being the worst team in the NBA to contending. And so it's like, are they going to trade him?
So that's fun. Uh Trey Young. Yep, Trey Young. Is he a part of the future? Uh at least for a year.
I don't know how, like, long term, but they, those were both buy lows: Anthony Davis, Trey Young. I don't know if it was a I don't know if it was a directive from ownership, like Hey, let's try to actually win some basketball games, or if it was a. Hey, let's just start getting this thing going in the right direction. We'll see. I don't know that they're you know here in two, three years, either one of those guys, but I think they could help them at least get their winning ways going and then let hopefully like DeBonsa and some of the other guys take over from there.
So if you had a four-hour show. On Washington, I'm sorry, DMV sports scene. Yeah. How much time are you giving to each? Team right now.
Right now?
Well, you have the Nats in season. You still, Commanders is still NFL's king. Wizards have the number one pick. I don't know what the cabs are up to. Uh nothing.
Mm-hmm. The discussion there is if we're going to get another year of O V or not. My sabers got eliminated. Dude, a devastating loss. I was rooting for you guys.
I mean, now I'm in a tough spot because I think the number one team that I hate in hockey is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Number two would be the Carolina Hurricanes. But then I also have this rule that I want the Stanley Cup to stay in the United States.
So I don't know what the heck I do in the Eastern Conference. My buddy that I like the Sabers with texts me after, or we were texting after the game, and he's like. Why did it have to be a heartbreaking loss like Wisconsin Sports? I'm like. I'm like, that's why we picked them.
We picked the Stavers because they felt the most Wisconsin-y. Like it. Yeah, you could replace that with the Green Bay Packers or any of the other teams, and it'd fit right in. That's why I also picked West Ham in the Premier League. And the the guy that I Was influenced by was like, they're never too good, but they're never too bad either.
Well, now they might get relegated. I gotta be, I gotta be. Monitoring that on Sunday. I got to be monitoring the situation. Yeah, are they going to.
I want them to pass Tottenham. I want Tottenham to get relegated. Me too. I hate Tottenham. I don't care that much about Tottenham, but I think it would be such a good story about this team playing at this new stadium, top ten club in the world, and they're not even playing in the Premier League.
Oh, it'd be the best. Because I've run into like different Premier League fandoms around town. And when it was about the Premier League, I'm like, I'm not rooting for Arsenal or Liverpool or Man City or Man U or any of these teams that like. You know, you would root for. Like, if I was.
In another country, and I'd wanted like a baseball team, I'd be like, oh, like the Yankees or Dodgers. You know, I didn't want to do that. But there's this chapter of Tottenham fans. Oh, yeah. That I've run into.
They like to congregate at a bar called the Red Lion. And then you go in there in a Tottenham game, and they're playing. Oh, it's like who is this? It's like going into a small-town bar. Who's this outsider here there?
What's he thinking he's going to do here tonight? He better not order. He better not sit in Jerry's chair. You know what I mean? Yeah, I hope they get relegated.
So I'll be cheering on your. Your West Ham club. Thank you, Telby. Do you want to stick around? I'm going to open it up to others, or do you want to be rid of this?
I can stick around. I got nothing going on. All right, well you get to talk to Hot Take Jake if he's ready. Looks like he's in a bathroom. Or some shit.
Where are you? It's like a break room kind of thing. Oh, have you ever met Toby? Uh I think I've met Toby. Virtually, I guess you could say.
I've never met him in person, but I like Toby. He's a pretty even keeled guy, good takes. I had Andrew Wagner on the other day, and Jake was just incensed in the comments. He called him a gas station Chuck Freeman. Gas station Chuck Freeman.
I just feel like, you know, if you clearly aren't watching the sport. Don't Comment on what NBA, yeah. Like, he's he's not. Like, he's gonna say, Well, yeah, I watch it. No, no, no, he's not.
He's covered the bucks, though. Yeah, but like, he's not watching it because the takes he had were just abysmal. And such like. Talking points that you would just hear from people that are idiotic. Like, and he's just taking those and acting like they're his own.
And I'm sure he's a great guy, but holy crap, don't ever talk about the Buckswags. My God. Jake is having a really hard time with the prospect of Giannis being moved. No, no, no, no, no, I'm not. I've come to terms with it.
But I will say, I had to get on here because I'm really disappointed in Paul. He's like my sports soulmate. I agree with 99.9% of what he says. The way he does or wants things done, like he's awesome. He should be a GM.
Except. You know, I'm not mad. I'm disappointed. What was it? Paul, you said Paul thinks you sprint to the phone to call in Jalen Williams and A.J.
Mitchell for Giannis. Yeah, and that this is exactly what Paul's response was: with all due respect, I'm absolutely 1000% correct about that. Oh, God. No, no, no.
So here's what happened, and this is why I'm disappointed. Paul has let ESPN, Bill Simmons, all these national media guys gaslight him into thinking that Giannis is not worth what Giannis is worth because they've been saying it. all season long. Prior to this last season, it was the Bucks, you know, they need to get Giannis out of there. He's the best player in the world.
He's wasting his prime.
Now that it looks like it's going to happen, now it's, well, is he really worth that much? Like, I don't know. Like, I don't know if he's the guy you could build around.
So, you know, we're smarter than that, or we should be. We know that when Giannis walks onto the court, he sleepwalks his way to 25 and 10 on a bad night.
So again, it's just like, I think it's the constant prodding, and like it's been so consistent from these national guys that, well, yeah, maybe you make the trade for Giannis, but you're not going to give up that much. Like, they want to give us less than Rudy Gobert got, than Desmond Bain got in a trade. And we can't lose the message as Bucks fans because this is the best player we're ever going to see for the franchise. And if we're giving him up in his prime, which he is. You have to get a history.
Why don't you worry about his knees?
Okay. Bart, you said it yourself. You really think he was hurt this year? I think he just didn't feel like doing it this year. Thank you.
That was him pouting. He didn't get traded to the Knicks. And he can't go into the media and be like, well, I requested a trade.
So what do you do to, you just, it's very passive-aggressive. Like, he essentially took a gap here. Yeah, he took a gap here, even though they could have asked him and he probably would have said, no, screw that. But he's like, I'll just do it on my own. He was hobnobbing at the Super Bowl.
He was. Figuring out all these new ads to pick up. Had three non-contact injuries in one season. No, and when he played, he was as dominant as he's ever been. He's late for the plane.
Yeah. Yeah, is that stuff real? I don't know. Some guy that works at the airport said no as he's decked out in Adeta Kubros gear.
Well, that's what I'm saying. Like, I don't know that that's the source to tell me. The one guy that never bought anything from that store. I just don't think Miles Turner is going on a podcast and, like, yeah, Giannis is the last one on the plane just because. Miles Turner.
Miles Turner's getting traded too, right? Yeah. No, I don't know. I think Miles is acting as if he's getting traded or. Giannis is getting traded.
He's acting like he's not going to be Giannis' teammate. Let's say Miles Turner gets traded. You could ask me in five years. If he was on the Bucs and I'd be like, I wouldn't be, I wouldn't remember it. the Greg Monroe of his time.
Miles Turner. No, I'd like to see that keep him around for a while. He's getting benched in the final quarter for Jericho Sims. I think we need to see Miles play with a coach that has half a brain cell before we just jettison him off for whatever the lowest value is. I think I saw the Bucs play twice this year, and they lost to the Wizards both times.
One was on New Year's Eve. I mean, what a joke. Because I was there. Yeah, Middleton Kilton. We took the kids and some families and we had a great night.
Well, I'm talking I I saw him lose twice here. Oh, what a shot. Yeah. But the New Year's Eve night, they blew it. They blew like a 10-point lead, and then McCollum hit the game winner.
Everyone's like, I'm wearing my wizards' gear and cheering for Lux to win because it benefits both of us. I'm like, what the heck? I mean, that team's garbage. Mm-hmm. Uh and my last greater point, you know, again, I just want to reiterate to you guys like Paul, when you allow yourself to be gaslit, it Like It subconsciously allows the ownership to start thinking about lesser offers than they should even like.
If someone offers them close to what Paul said yesterday, you hang up the phone, you laugh them off. Strong characters. I'm just Jalen Williams. He's a fringe all-star guy. He's like the same age Giannis was when he won the title.
So by the time there were. I mean, there'd be more to the package. There would have to be a lot. a lot more to the package than him and AJ Mitchell second round pick. I just, we need more.
We need the Shea package. That's what we need. Yeah. Mm-hmm. I want Shay's package.
Now, last point, Bart, you're 100% dead on. People that are like Fans of this team in the NBA and this team over here in the NFL, like that's lame as shit. It's regional. Like the only instance, you know, I tried to get into hockey a couple years back where I'm like, oh, Seattle's getting a franchise. Maybe I'll get into hockey now, but I realize I'm too old to watch West Coast games.
So that's why that didn't work out for me. But, but People that, you know, like Carlos Ortiz, he likes the. Bulls and Cubs, but then the Knicks and the Rangers. Makes no sense. What?
He grew up in Chicago, wasn't into football. When he moved to New York, give me the Zappy story, the long, you know, yeah, okay. Like, actually moved to New York the weekend. I know you like the girl with the fish eyes, uh, horse eyes, yeah, breed, but like. She's a fan of the Cubs and the Red Sox.
Now, you have free will, and you decide that you want to be a fan of the two most unlikeable teams. I just don't hate her. Yeah. I take a lot of joy to see her suffer. I'm like you, Bart.
But all right, I love you guys. I've been watching my video 50 times, but I'm not a fan of her. Oh, Jesus. See, Jake, well, you watch for different reasons, Bart. Wait, what was the other thing I was gonna say?
I don't know. Oh. Hockey. When I when we were trying to figure out to get into hockey. How we ended up on the Sabres.
is First, we said no teams from the South, because that doesn't make sense. No teams from Canada. And The first thing we ruled out was They can't be in a city where we have a rival.
So I'm not because I got family that's big into the Blackhawks, and they're like, oh, we can. I'm like, I can't do it. I can't root for the blues. I can't root for the wild. I can't root for the red wings.
I can't root for any of these teams. Yeah. So then we were down to like the Penguins, the Islanders, the Rangers. The Sabres The Flyers, pretty much the original six is what we were down to. We pick Buffalo because they had a nice little run in the seventies.
And we're kind of okay a little bit in the 2000s. Like, we feel like this is the Brewers. They're blue and yellow. Except for the years they were black and red for some reason. Yeah, it was the 90s.
People were doing weird shit. But I think you mentioned the Blackhawks. People that are like Wisconsin sports fans and Blackhawks fans are worse than Packers Cubs fans, in my opinion, because you didn't see anyone around here that liked the Blackhawks. They go to the Cup in 2010. And everyone, every bar it's on, people are wearing the jerseys.
It's like. Got here. Yeah. I agree. I don't have time for it.
All right. I love you guys. Love you, Jake. Tim is back watching, and he says, Any update on the tailgate? I've been talking about having another tailgate.
all year and I still have not picked a date. Mm. I will get on that this week. I've now said for the fourth week in a row. I could just pick one.
I can pick one. I'll pick a day right now. Just pick a random game. Yeah, I'll pick a day.
Well, I was gonna pick a weekend day and then the guy was like Yeah, you can, but I mean, those are pretty expensive.
So, if I'm going to look at a weekday game. And I don't want it to be during the World Cup. Yep. Is there any buzz out there for the World Cup? Yeah.
There's not games there, right? No, are they? Closest is Philly. There's like, I go to Walgreens. Walgreens is an aisle decked out and stuff.
Yeah, I mean, like, you walk into some of the sporting goods stores and like it's all decked out, but I don't know that people are like care that much. But I was gonna buy a hat and I was like No one's gonna know what this is. Then I'm wearing the fucking Thanassus hat. I don't know what my worry is. Complaining people won't know what this is.
Where this is 43. Yeah. I just show up, pick up my kid at the playground. 43. What was what could that be?
Did he just turn 43? What? Next year I turn 43. Is it uh is it Would it be more embarrassing for people not to know who it is or for people to know that they know who it is and it's the nasis? Oh yeah, why didn't they make it what is Alex Adeta Cumpo's number?
When are we getting Alex the dead of Kumpo hats? Yeah. All right, so I'm thinking, how about against the Mets the 22nd of July? That's a Wednesday. Please do it against the Mets.
Or I could do against the pirates. Mets fans are so insufferable. Or against the Mariners August 20th. Hmm. I'll think about that.
No giveaways on any of these days. I want to do it when it's hot again because that needs to be the tradition. The last time we did it, it was 115 degrees. Yeah, that's uh that's miserable. Thursday, June 18th.
I don't know if I can do a June turnaround. I mean, I'm not doing anything. Like, what else am I going to do today? Yeah. Do you want to should we plan out my day?
Let's do it. Wednesdays are hard because I have to pick up my kid at 2.25 and not 3.25. Yeah. Early release day.
So I'm gonna I'm gonna end this. I have to clean I have to finish the laundry. Do the dishes, take out the trash. I'm gonna go to the store. And by mountain dews.
Yeah. 'Cause you've already crushed two during this pod. They were both half open. I've just seen you throw two bottles. Yeah, I have a Mountain Dew graveyard over here.
I think there's only There's like There's like dew bottles over there. There's like four over there right now.
Okay. Whatever works, man. Um Oh, I forgot to make a cup of coffee. I got my cup of coffee. I'm going to go to the store.
You know my favorite part about working in uh radio out here and That's that that's my day.
Some of the some of the stuff that people do is, you know, they're they're making sure to be extra prepared and you know, meeting before the show and doing all these things. And I'm like, Yeah, mi Bart and I uh for a six o'clock show, we're hoping to be there by five fifty eight. Peek behind the curtain. We had a... Pre-recorded segments ready just in case Bart wasn't there on time.
That's a good idea. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Well, there was one time that you didn't get there on time, and I was like, what the heck do I do?
So I opened the show and then played an interview for the day before. Didn't one time I start the show from my car? Uh I'm sure you too guys in traffic. Yeah. I was like, good morning, everybody.
Sounds about rights. Yeah. Good morning, everybody. Over the phone. Yeah, like trying to plan all this stuff out, come up with these great ideas.
And Bart and I are just rolling in five minutes before the show. And that was an early day.
Well, I prepped at night, Toby.
Well, yeah, no, of course. No, I prepped overnight. I'm not saying that you didn't prep. I'm just saying, like. In terms like Oh yeah, we're gonna make sure to get there 15, 20 minutes early, make sure everything's working.
We're gonna roll in at five fifty eight and if it ain't working. Uh we're screwed.
Well, that's not on me. Correct. Yeah. You know who I felt bad for was Horvod. They made him do an hour by himself.
Do you think that they put him on the schedule just to make sure that there was someone in the studio at 6 a.m.? Oh, that was because of me, I screwed him over. But he had to like answer his own phone calls and Horvy. Update the website during his hour show. Where am I?
How many times how many times I heard someone go to Horvod? hey you're doing a great job but part of your job is to update the website And he's like, yeah, yeah, I'll do it. Never doing that shit. A sports radio website, I'm sorry. I don't think they're I don't Who's going there?
Well, also, like, the website was literally like All right, write the article, and it'd be three sentences and be like, listen to this segment. It's like, people already do that. On a podcast. Yeah. They're going to go to the website and be like, oh.
I'm going to read the article. Four sentences I grabbed from Google.
Okay. and link the audio. And this is before AI. Yeah, I mean come on.
Sometimes I'd be like. Guys, the website hasn't been updated in three days. And I'd say. And who complained? Yeah.
Who noticed? Who looked at it? Who's upset about this? Whose day have we ruined? Yeah.
You know what I'm going to do today, Bart? I'm going to go work out. It's not going to go well. What is that now? I'm not familiar with the concept.
Yeah, neither am I, unfortunately. It's not gonna kill. Yeah. I knew it. I don't know if I remember that one.
I don't know if that was with me or someone else. I don't remember that one. That might have been Shay. Twenty-five minutes late. Tim got Tim was producing for me for about...
And then had to add an interview for me to run that you say. Oh yeah, exactly. Yeah. Remember when I had to do an hour? Commercial free in the nine o'clock.
Well, we did that routinely. Oh yeah, we need commercials.
Well, we just move stuff around. Oh yeah.
Well, memory lane's fine. Toby, thanks for coming on. Absolutely. Yeah. I have no life, so I'm always free.
Well, you're going to the game tonight, right?
Well, that's true. Yeah. Do you get down and dirty in the post game or do you just like be quiet like me? Uh, half the time I don't even do post game stuff. If I'm doing the post-game actual post-game show.
That's one thing. If I don't, I'm not going to the managers' press conference. Will you give me $20 if I can name the Nationals manager? Uh sure.
Something Martinez? That was their World Series manager who got fired last year. Was that Davey? Yeah. Who is it now?
Blake Buterra? Was he a catcher for the twins? Uh no, I don't think I don't think any relation either. That was Drew Butera you're thinking of. Oh, me and my butyras.
One of the weak spots I have in sports. Yeah, uh Blake Butera. Uh, I think he's um He's like thirty-two. 34. Managing a big league club?
Who's the guy that is managing a team and he's like really dumb and he sucks? Greg Council? That guy Oh, it's like a first Tony Crivello or Terello. Oh, Mitello? Yeah, who's who's he managing?
The Giants? The Giants. And he like asked for a pitching change, but didn't say who to come out. Yeah, there it was. Get a different picture.
Who? There was a um fun moment in the Mets Nats game the other night where The Nats were down by five runs in the twelfth inning. 12th inning? Yeah, 12th inning. And they wanted to bring in a position player to pitch, and the umpires didn't know that that was allowed.
And so we stood there and just watched for like eight minutes while they were talking to New York and Turns out the young kid manager knew. And the man uh umpires didn't, which is kind of embarrassing because that's a pretty easy rule to understand. Anytime an extras, you're going to have a position player pitch. Yet the umpires didn't know it.
So Instead, we got to watch the Nationals give up 10 runs in extra innings and lose. What was like 17 to 6? Wow. But In twelve innings. How is that possible?
It's not often that you get blown out, and the game went to 12 innings, especially after having opportunities to win it and. The ninth, tenth, and eleventh innings.
Well, we'll be polling for the Nats to see you on the parade. Yeah, absolutely. That should be a good time. Um probably won't happen this year, but hopefully down the line.
Well, they're 500 parade. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Your your bit that you're so I guess not looking forward to it. No, I'm excited about it.
I'm excited about it. Go full uni. I got a different jersey to wear for it. I'm ready to go. Toby Altizer.
Tim Shea and hot take Jake and all of you. Thanks for stopping into the Winklerverse. Hey! And Doug. There's nowhere I wouldn't go to help someone customize and save on car insurance with Liberty Mutual.
Even if it means sitting front row at a comedy show. Hey everyone, check out this guy and his bird. What is this? Your first date? Oh, no.
