Jesus performs a miracle, healing a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute, and the people are amazed, wondering if he is the Son of David, the Messiah. The Pharisees, however, attribute the miracle to Satan, claiming that Jesus is casting out demons by Belzebul, the prince of demons. Jesus responds by explaining that a house divided against itself cannot stand, and that even Satan would not cast out his own demons, as that would weaken his kingdom. Jesus also explains that a ruler must be served, and that those who do not gather with him scatter. He warns that there is an unpardonable sin, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will not be forgiven, either in this age or the one to come.
