As the owner of a tavern and a post office, she was involved in a spy network against the United States. Her son, John Surratt, was also part of the network and was involved in the kidnapping plot of Lincoln. The plot was foiled, but John Wilkes Booth, a famous actor and Confederate sympathizer, went ahead with the assassination.
