Jesus' story of the rich man and Lazarus illustrates this concept, showing that the rich man ended up in Hades, tormented by his memories of rejecting God, while Lazarus was comforted in paradise. The Bible also teaches that at the judgment of the great white throne, Hades will be emptied and its inhabitants sent into the lake of fire, eternal hell. Meanwhile, believers who die go to paradise, which has been transferred to heaven by Jesus, where they await the resurrection of their bodies.
