Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. The Saints big man got it on the ricochet at the goal line. That was a thick pick. This is the Rich Eisen Show. Soundy drills it.
No doubt about it. It's a home run. Earlier on the show, 11-time Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Coming up, NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo.
Plus your phone calls, latest news and more. And now sitting in for Rich, it's Tom Pelissero. An eventful morning slash afternoon on the East Coast here on the Rich Eisen Show. Tom Pelissero in for Rich.
The big news of the day. Robert Sala out after three years plus five games as the head coach of the New York Jets. Let's bring in a guy who I saw pop up for a minute there on NFL Network earlier today discussing this news. Covered the Jets closely for many years out there in the New York, New Jersey area. My NFL Network colleague, another member of the insiders, which you can catch tonight, 7 p.m. Eastern time, 4 p.m. Pacific. Mike Garafolo joins us on the show.
Mike, I'll just toss it to you. This was certainly something that I think we all had on our radar as a possibility at some point toward the end of the season with Aaron Rogers flat out saying, hey, if this doesn't work out, we're all gone. I don't think many people saw it coming after week five.
Give me the latest. How did we get here with Robert Sala out as Jets head coach? Yeah, I mean, Robert Sala himself certainly didn't see it coming.
How did we get here? Well, the Broncos game, I think, was was was bad. Right. And if their line makes the field goal, they're three and two right now. Does this happen?
Probably not. But that's how fine the line is between being employed and being a former head coach in this league, which you can avoid with better. I mean, Robert Sala, there were a lot of questions.
Let me get this. There were a lot of questionable moments as I've covered this team where I'm like, probably needed some better management in situations. So it's it's not surprising that he was maybe on notice. It is surprising because if they win on Monday, and it's a home game against the Bills, they beat at home last year, they're in first place.
Like a lot of times it's all right, we're two and six and the rest of the division is running away and we expect it to be in the mix. I just to me and then Woody Johnson is going to speak here shortly. I'll be on that conference call to see what what the ambassador's answer is going to be on this one, which seems to be the the tweet du jour today about how he was referred to as Ambassador Johnson by the Jets website, which, by the way, I would say you cannot overstate how much losing that game against the Vikings in London mattered in this whole in this whole situation. So it's I was definitely surprised that it that it happened this early. I'll put it that way. Robert Wood Johnson, the fourth, as I was referred to in the Jets media email, that conference call occurring at the bottom of this hour.
So twenty seven minutes away, two thirty p.m. Eastern Time. It'll be interesting to hear, Mike, how exactly Woody addresses the thought process, because as you said, and listen, we're you know, we're all judged on the results on the field. Everybody's judged by their performance. Robert Sala, I think, you know, it was well documented trying to take more, have more input on the offensive side of the ball, which in turn logically means he's less involved with the defense.
It became harder, I think, at times for anybody to say, hey, Robert Sala is doing this. That's why he needs to continue to be the head coach of the football team. Yet yet there are a field goal away. And as bad as that game was, as bad as the weather was, they're winning. But for a missed field goal at the end of the game, I'll just be interested to hear why would he believes this move at this moment creates the type of sea change that he apparently thinks it does, because you saw the statement it was this team is talented. We got a tough interim coach that's going to take us to the heights. We get 12 games to show it. And if they lose Monday night to the bills, it's already edgy in New York. It's going to get that much worse. What was the phrasing in the hold on?
I'll find it here. Jeff will serve as our interim head coach for the manager. He's a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team.
You can't help but apply that to Robert Sala. And I know that there were players along the way. Makai Becton, I just saw this as I came on.
And please double confirm this. So I'm not speaking out of turn because it was a blog that maybe he deleted it. I don't know. But Makai Becton tweeted the guy at the funeral who said, I just showed up at my, my, my enemy's funeral just to make sure I remember that hold my biggest haters funeral. It's something like that.
He was dead. Yes. I recall paraphrasing slightly.
Yeah. So you'll have a list of guys who, if they were speaking freely, which clearly Makai Becton is doing would, would tell you that yeah, I don't know if he appears to have deleted it. So would tell you that they didn't love Robert Sala as a head coach. There are a lot who would know the quarterback is certainly going to be the most interesting one. And apparently he's pushed his appearance, his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee show till Wednesday. So we won't hear from him till tomorrow. I'm sure what he Johnson is going to say.
It was his decision, his decision alone. I would think considering how much that they have bent over backwards for Aaron Rogers and signed players and hired coaches. So you see Nathaniel Hackett in the background. How much did they have brought in over the past year plus for Aaron Rogers that you would at least get his take on the matter?
I don't know. I mean, the situ, the shove during the Patriots game, I thought that was way overplayed. I thought that was two guys just enjoying the moment. I think that's, that's it right there.
Good job, everybody. So I think that was overplayed. However, the body language from Rogers, you know, some of the way that, so the answers have answered a few questions. I think he was probably not sold on how everything was being run period.
Now you flip that. And if you get Robert Sala on right now and say, do you think you were justifiably fired? He would tell you, I haven't had a quarterback for the first three years of being a head coach.
And I got one for six games total, not even six games, five and four plays. That's all I really got to show what I am as a head coach. Obviously, Woody Johnson felt like things weren't going to change, made the move.
Now, I don't know that you can give a complete grade. Anybody who's been around Aaron Rogers, certainly his coaches know he has a tendency to, to use a blunt word, complain. In other words, if things aren't going well, he's happy to tell other people, Hey, this isn't right.
This person's not doing their job. So to the extent that it's anybody thinking Aaron Rogers, like stormed into Woody Johnson's office and said, Robert solid needs to go. I wouldn't anticipate it that I do believe that to the extent, if any, that Aaron Rogers thought, perhaps there was a leadership change needed. He had a variety of different ways that he could have made that clear without making any type of demand and look back at the history of head coaches with Aaron Rogers. He gets, you know, early in his career, obviously he's drafted under Mike Sherman. Who's there as rookie year, but then Mike McCarthy comes in the guy who had been on the San Francisco staff, Mike McCarthy didn't make the choice to go with Alex Smith.
That would be ridiculous. Offense coordinators don't do that, but was on that staff. When they took the other guy, he comes in those two have a great partnership. They win a super bowl. They go to the playoffs, over and over and over again, but in those final few years, it was the Aaron in different ways, kind of making comments to various people and making clear that he thought we knew something different. He gets Matt and the floor in, we quickly learned that Aaron didn't really have any input in that, but that ends up being a good partnership. And for two years, they win a couple of MVPs. Then Aaron, for reasons that had nothing to do with the Florida sides to move on.
And the image I can't help, but think of Mike is Robert Sala, along with other members of the Jets organization in California at Aaron's house, go back and read the quotes from both of them about those initial meetings and how well they got along and why Aaron bought into Robert Sala here, you know, to think that a year and change later, we're at this point and it's Robert Sala is gone. And now, Hey, we're taking our shot here for the next 12 games and hoping this works. It's just, it's a fascinating kind of thread that all revolves around one guy who now needs to step up and play his butt off with Devante Adams or without him come Monday night against the Bills.
They're going to be two and four and there's not a whole lot of places they can go. No. And it doesn't change the offense, right? None of this changes anything offensively. These guys are out of sync. They're out of rhythm, which is surprising because of how much time Aaron Rogers spent.
I'm still waiting. There's nobody tied it. Nobody tied like they're out of sync because he missed the three days of mini camp or two days or whatever it was.
We'll pull that quote out and make sure. No, but he, he certainly spent enough time this off season and I watched him in training camp and how dialed in he was with so many players. I just thought that the rhythm and the chemistry, I mean, I guess we can go back to the sideline spats with him and Garrett Wilson during training camp where they tried to downplay that, but there was certainly a number of instances of that and say these guys are not on the same page. So firing the head coach is not necessarily going to change that.
Now, maybe it motivates you to work that much harder on getting your, but it's not like they haven't been working on it already already. So they've got to figure it out on offense. They've got to figure out a way to get on the same page and to start clicking because the way that they got off to slow starts the last couple of games and really a slow finish against the Broncos as well is just not going to get it done for this team and the way it's supposed to be built.
So we'll see about the offensive side of the ball. For Jeff Ulbrich and Tom, you do the senior bowl every week, so you know how important it is and they've changed the format within the last couple of years to allow guys who haven't been head coaches before to get head coaching experience. So Jeff Ulbrich was the head coach and got rave reviews from the folks involved down there with how he structured things, how he ran things. I went back and found that clip of him at his post-game press conference after the senior bowl talking about how it forced him to think about things that you don't think about as an assistant, the bigger picture, how things are structured. It is different doing it at the senior bowl than it is in the NFL as head coach of the Jets with Aaron Rodgers as your quarterback after they just let go of Robert Salah.
So here come the lights for Jeff Ulbrich, who I like a lot. I think the world of and I think a lot of defensive players think highly of him there. Players on both sides of the ball, but certainly his defensive players. Now let's see what he can do as a head coach. Prior to this move today, Mike, and I posed this question to Rich yesterday, I spent time on Sunday into Monday pondering, would a trade for Devante Adams fix the New York Jets?
And you know, the simple answer is no. They've got other issues involved, which obviously Woody Johnson agrees with that by making a change at the top. But what it would do is it would give Aaron Rodgers the guy to which it sure seemed like he was trying to throw the passes in that game. In other words, they were by my rough count, 10 times or Rodgers for as much as he couldn't move.
Okay. That knee was obviously a problem. Then he twists the ankle. He was in the pocket as much as we've ever seen Aaron Rodgers, but he was snapping off throws into tight windows. And there were about 10 times in that game where he threw it. And it's within a millimeter of the linebackers outside shoulder. And it's the one to Lazard in the end zone.
It's the one to Mike Williams at the end of the game. These are all plays and balls he's thrown to Devante Adams. He knows Devante Adams historically has caught those when you're throwing them to Lazard or Mike Williams or Garrett Wilson, it's that little bit. That's the difference. And I guarantee Rogers after the game is thinking Devante would have caught a couple of those.
I don't know. I just, with all of you, with all you, I mean, you're already firing a head coach because, and this was the message, our roster is more talented than our record shows. So you're going to add more talent there, another piece, give up more pieces going forward. I hope that his personality meshes hope that Garrett Wilson now doesn't go like this because I mean, maybe it helps him, right? Cause it's another guy that the defense has to pay attention to fine. I get all that part, but what would help him to be like, I thought I was supposed to be the guy here.
I thought I was the one that you guys were going to feed. And the way that I, when I covered that Patriots game, they had to get him in the end zone that night. And Rogers even admitted after the game, I made the mortal sin of a quarterback of pre-determining where I was going with the football. And thankfully it ended well on a touchdown, but that's how badly, cause the play before he didn't get in, he slammed the turf, gets back up, gets in the huddle, and he throws it to him and he get in the end zone. Like if you're not getting that kind of commitment from your, I mean, everybody in the building, I talked to people.
I was like, he had to get in the end zone that night. If you're not getting that now, somebody else is now the shiny new toy. You wonder how that's going to affect him.
I just, I don't know. I, we, we talked the other day or yesterday on the insiders. I said, I think the bills are still the team that would benefit most from Devante Adams. But I understand there's a lot of moving pieces for a number of teams here. I, I I'm, I'm going to ask Woody Johnson in 15 minutes, flat out about that and just whether he thinks that that needs to be done at this point.
I'd be curious to see what his response is on that one. And it's certainly a situation that continues to be, it's alive at minimum. It's alive for the jets, it's alive for some other teams as well. But you said the moving parts, it's about certain teams, like the bills would need the Raiders to eat money, which they don't want to do.
Other teams may not be offering the type of compensation, knowing that this is basically a 12 game rental plus playoffs here with the jets. They don't play till Monday night. So you do have an extra day before they, the thrust of their practice schedule would begin on Thursday here.
So these next 24 to 48 hours are big. And I, and I really do believe, Mike, we'll see the jets come out and play well on Monday night. And I say that for no other, if for no other reason than the fact that when we've seen other teams take over or have interim head coaches take over, particularly ex players, which Jeff Olbrich has won that first game, I always say it's the placebo effect.
Guys think something is different. We got a fresh start here. We saw it with Antonio Pierce last year.
We saw it with Jeff Saturday, went into Vegas, won his first game. They didn't win any other games, but for that one game, it felt different. When Andy Dalton starts against the Raiders this year, it feels different. Head coach quarterback, the two spots you can do it. The quarterback, you're not going to do it right now with Aaron Rogers, the jets fire, the head coach, and we'll see what happens on one other subject here, Mike game last night, which we should probably get around to talking about is the two time defending chiefs. They're playing with a bunch of guys who were given up on by other teams, former chiefs who now have come back. It's cream hunt runs for a hundred yards. Juju has well over a hundred yards. Meekole Hardman makes a couple of big plays in that game.
From what you've seen from the chiefs over five weeks, which let's be clear, they are five and O is this a team that is capable of sustaining this and figuring out like the chiefs seem to every year, regardless who's on the field? Yeah. Sorry, funny tweet.
Just came across. I'll send it to you and send it to us. Send it to all of us. No, no, no, no. This is, this is for the group threat only.
What was the question? Oh, the chiefs. Yes, they can because they've been a good tweet. Their coaching staff is, is outstanding. Right.
And it's not just the core. I mean, give Matt Nagy and Andy Reed all the flowers for the offensive side of the ball. Give Steve Spagnuolo flowers for what he's doing defensively, which is what he always does defensively. I feel like he's even in more of a groove with what to call situationally.
Pressure sometimes make them think pressure and pull out. Sometimes it's, it's, he's, he's done an incredible job. But also like their assistant, I mean, Dave, Dave Tobe, we've got to give credit to the special teams all the way down to my guy, David Merritt, who coaches the defensive backs there, who's done a great job there.
So yes, they can sustain it because they've got a coaching staff that's really humming right now. And you could see that. You could see the way they're scheming things up and basically ahead of, well, we lost this guy. So how do we now, you know, and they had Carson Steele as the lead back for one game and all of a sudden turned it over to Kareem. I mean, they, they said like, oh, Kareem showed up. Kareem already looks impressive. And I'm like, yeah, okay. So he'll carry the ball like eight times a game for the next 27 carries last night. Like he was there the whole off season. Yeah.
Unbelievable. Great job. Like I give him all the credit in the world for showing up in that kind of shape. And also the motivation, you know, he wants to win a ring with that team. So it's good to add that. Like that's what you have to do as you're defending, you have to figure out which pieces you can keep in place that are going to continue to be motivated that want that next ring.
The old Tom Brady, what's your favorite ring, the next one. And what guys can add, you can add in certain spots to give you a jolt and we'll be part of the chemistry there. A guy that has been there before made a lot of sense. Heard the stories on the air last night about how he was jumping up and down and so excited when they called him after Pacheco went down. So they've got the talent. They really do. They've done a great job putting a talented roster out there that can sustain some key injuries. And from a coaching staff perspective, they're doing a great job. Last thing for you, Mike, the team that lost to the chiefs in the Super Bowl last year, the 49ers, they're two and three.
We know they haven't had Christian McCaffrey. We know that they've been banged up and the 49ers seem to every few years go through one of these cycles where it just seems like everything is going wrong, but they got a lot of their guys back right now. Thursday night football, 49ers against Seahawks has the feel, even though it's a three and two team versus two and three team, it has the feel of a really, really big game in a wide open division.
What do you make right now with the state of the NFC West? Yeah, I got to look back and maybe it's just in my head. I feel like they've played four or five Thursday night games and maybe it's not. Maybe it's like two in Seattle and it's always close, right? And so it just feels like it's going to be another one of those there. It's going to come down to a late field goal or something like that. And I may be rolling in some Sunday night games that I thought were maybe on Thursday, but this one feels like it's going to be an ugly knockdown drag out who can make the play, who's going to kick the field goal at the end, which we talked about the Jets. You can talk about the 49ers who you're talking about right now. If they have a kicker the other day, they don't have to go for it on what, fourth and 23, whatever it was, kick the field goal. Maybe that game turns out differently. The Giants had a game without a kicker where they probably win if they have a kicker.
So maybe it comes down to another field goal here, which would be fitting for this team. San Francisco, they're going to be so well coached and they've certainly got enough talent. They've lost some key pieces, but Kyle Shanahan is going to figure this out. I'd still say that they're the team to beat in the NFC West. The Mike McDonald situation as a first year head coach, and this sounded a lot better when they were 3-0, but as a first year head coach, apparently has impressed folks with how locked in he is.
Everything is kind of really on point. Hadn't shown things that you would expect of a rookie coach where he doesn't really understand the flow just yet. He'll figure it out. He's been locked in as if he's been a head coach for 10 years, so this is a key spot for him. Short week with this team coming in. Let's see how the Seahawks respond after a game where I really felt like the Giants went back and have sort of gone back to the way that they played things a couple of years ago when Brian Dabble was the coach of the year and they were so successful, which is, let's not try to do too much. Let's just try to be who we are on offense. They only took a couple of shots down the field. They hit one or both of them, I'm trying to remember, but it was more about playing safe and not making mistakes. When teams execute that way in the NFL, you don't want to do that for the long haul. That's why last year they really tried to open things up and it didn't work, but they're back to doing what has made them successful with a smart game plan, a safe game plan, and the Seahawks has had trouble stopping that. And certainly the field goal, give them all the credit for the way that they spotted that on film and executed that. I thought when both guys held down the guards there, I thought that that was a penalty and it's been proven ever since that it's not. You can push down if the guy's already down, so they spotted that on film and what a job by them to pull that out of the key spot. And did it without Devin Singletary and Malik Nabors on the road in Seattle.
Something to be said for that too. Big game for Geno Smith on Thursday night as well. Mike, I'm gonna let you run. You gotta grow Woody Johnson here, so best of luck getting some answers. If you get anything, break the news and then come back on the show from the golf course if you can. Appreciate it. It's a little chilly out here today. I wish it was on the golf course.
If I was, would have been an even madder scramble home, Tom, to get in front of the camera to do some breaking news for NFL Network. Cheers, buddy. Yeah, I'm gonna let that one slide. Mike, thank you very much.
That is Mike Garofalo. A lot more from Woody Johnson. We'll get some quotes before the end of this show. Talk about that coming up on the other side of this break. Let's dive a little bit more into week six in the NFL. This is my last day for the week in the chair. We got some marquee matchups, some big games. Let's talk about all of it right after this.

I'm good, Rich. Late last night and then again this morning when I woke up, dozens of texts, some claiming it must be real. Some saying this can't be true. Old news as of seven a.m. Pacific, 10 a.m. Eastern. Robert Saul was fired as the head coach of the New York Jets. We know that week six wraps up with Jeff Olbrich making his debut as interim head coach against the Bills Monday Night Football. We know that week starts off Thursday. 49ers at Seahawks. We talked with Mike Garofalo about that huge game. Let's run through. I want to I want to just run through the rest of this slate.
All right. Jaguars at Bears. That's our London game this week.
That's a pretty fun game. Rich Eisen's going to be over there. Feels like a lot on the line for both these teams.
Jaguars. Yeah. Are you going to fall to one in five and then once again feel like the walls are closing in with remember they're doing two straight in London. So you're hoping everybody's coming back.
Yeah. Especially after the Jets now got the ball rolling on certain changes. The Bears you're coming off of the best the most complete game you've played. Albeit against probably the worst opponent you've played in terms of the talent level with Carolina. But you're seeing Caleb Williams get better and better. Trevor Lawrence is on top of his game. Two quarterbacks both coming off their best game of the season.
Yep. That'll be a fun one. Early Sunday morning on NFL Network. Maybe the game of the week. It's in the 1 p.m. Eastern slot on Sunday. It is commanders at Ravens.
Oh baby. It is Lamar Jackson. Highest total of the week. Who the moment he saw the field was an NFL MVP back in 2019. The commanders who have Jayden Daniels.
You said it early on during my stand here Brockman. Forget the rookie of the year. If you were voting for MVP right now he might get some votes. He might get some votes. Yeah.
He might be very high level. This is the best team. The best quarterback outside of Joe Burrow perhaps. Depending how you feel about those guys. Definitely the best defense that they that he's had to face so far.
So let's see because the Magic once again be there. This is a rivalry game of sorts right. It's an interconference game but it's in that that general area. Mid-Atlantic.
Battle for Mid-Atlantic. That's right. Exactly. So I mean that's that's a that's a pretty substantial one.
I like it. I don't even know if Lamar Jackson's the MVP of his own team. Derrick Henry's pretty good right now.
That's spicy. Mark Andrews we saw him last week right. He had a catch.
They've got weapons they're not even using. He's had a catch. Right now for Baltimore. He did.
He had he had one catch. Cardinals at Packers. Sneaky good game.
That's fun. The Packers have had I mean it's about a wild start to the season. All right you see you're gonna go to Brazil in week one. Your quarterback is gonna suffer what looks like a catastrophic knee injury.
But then you're gonna find out even before you're home the next morning that like he's probably gonna be okay. Malik Willis is gonna start week two and week three. Who's Malik Willis?
Yeah the guy who wasn't on your team three weeks before. He's gonna start. You're gonna win both those games. Then Sam Darnold and the Vikings are gonna come in and go up and down the field on you and break out to like a 21 point lead. And then you're gonna go to LA and beat the Rams. I mean that's a wild first five weeks.
Now you're facing the Cardinals who I mean last week they went on the road to San Francisco. Got an important win. You're seeing Kyler Murray playing at a good level. We had Larry Fitzgerald on this show earlier today talking about what he likes about Marvin Harrison Jr. When Kyler needed a big play in that game he went to Marvin and once a game Marvin Harrison Jr. has one of those plays where you're like he didn't he did catch that.
He did. He made that play. But a big challenge for Nick Rollis, Jonathan Gannon and that defense too because the Packers even with some of the moving parts they've had obviously Christian Watson's hurt now. Romeo Dobbs we'll see this week. Is he back?
Is he playing? They're giving any every indication that he will be. That's going to be I think a really interesting match of that Packers team regardless of what their record is. They're going to be there.
They're going to be there as we get to the end of this thing. Texans at Patriots. Brockman how you feeling on that one? I hope we lose by 40.
I think you share 40. 40 seems aggressive. All right Drake Mays playing. What do you want to happen? Then I just wanted to play well. Still lose. Got to maintain that high draft position.
But let's play well and let's show some flashes. That'll be over the next next day here. We'll see whether or not potentially they could be moving away from Jacoby Brissett. We haven't heard anything on that right?
Mike Reese had a story yesterday that he was like it's hearing in the building you know. What happens with the Saints? There's a lot of quarterback questions up in the air right now. Saints host the Bucks. A Buccaneers team that but for one just kind of sloppy weird bad game. They've looked pretty good this season.
The Bakers looked awesome. If it's not Derek Carr and it's Todd Bowles going against Jay Caner or maybe Spencer Rattler. I would not want to be those guys going against that defense in my debut.
Pick up the Bucks in fantasy. He's the number two quarterback. He's very mature for his age. Spencer Rattler obviously had a lot of highlights in in his time at Oklahoma and South Carolina. And he played well in the preseason. And he played well in the preseason. Got the crap beat out of him last year at South Carolina but kept answering the bell every week. I would think it's Hayner. He's the number two quarterback for a reason here. You're hoping Derek Carr can get back but an oblique injury?
At a time you're on a three-game skid and you're going home? We've seen some great Bucks Saints rivalry games too. I just want to know will Mike Evans and Marshawn Lattimore come to blows again? Because that seems to happen every time they play in the Superdome. The cats and dogs fight?
Yes. That is a fun thing because we come to accept. That is a fun NFC South divisional game. Browns and Eagles. This one feels like, I mean every week right now with the Browns you feel like just getting worse.
They don't get this one. It's going to be bad. They look worse every week. There's a disconnect on offense right now and it's not all on that guy Deshaun Watson.
That's where everybody wants to point. Certainly he can play better. He does not look right now like the guy back in 2019 when he was leading the league in passing for the Texans or 2020. But it's the offensive line that's totally beat up and the guys that are out there aren't playing well. They had injuries last year too. They also had Bill Callahan last year.
They found a way. The offensive line has been brutal. When Deshaun Watson does put a pass on a guy, Jerry Judy drops it in the end zone. It's the whole thing looks hard. Everything looks difficult and defensively they're not the number one Jim Schwartz unit right now. They are something of a shell of that. It's part of that you're getting taxed because every time you go to the sideline you're like well I got about five minutes to catch my breath here and I'm gonna be back out there.
That's probably part of it. The whole thing just isn't connected. The special team's been really good. Other than that the whole thing has been just disappointing. I think that's fair to say but the Eagles to this point too.
There's plenty of Eagles fans who are looking at the Jets building and going hey they're making a move. Robert Sol didn't go to the playoffs in three years. Nick Sirianni same hiring class has been to the playoffs every year.
He went to a Super Bowl. They got to figure it out. They're going to get the receivers back or they should. Devante Smith and AJ Brown will probably know more on that tomorrow.
They should get those guys back. That's going to make a big impact on a team that plainly hasn't had their horses here in recent weeks. Colts and Titans no offense to anyone involved.
Let's skip past that one. Charges at Broncos. Charges at Broncos.
I think it's a fun game. Broncos on a three-game winning streak. You don't watch the Broncos play right now and go boy you don't want to face this team.
But they're finding ways at the end. Bo Nix keeps making plays even more with his legs than his arm. That defense Vance Joseph man. Vance Joseph who I mean I'm not going to sit here and say he was on the brink of being fired after like four games last year but certainly it looked like he might be on the brink of being fired after four games. They had that game in Miami where they gave up 70 and it was like this is the worst defense in NFL history and then lo and behold they figured it out and they got better over the course of the season. Right now this is one of the best units in football and you have to credit George Payton for the way that he's drafted. I mean for the fortitude to say I'm going to pass on Justin Fields and take Pat Sturtan. Pat Sturtan is one of the best young players in the league.
You know moves like that are how you get better. That group is really impressive. They don't still have you don't look at their their skill group and go you know again we're scared of these guys. They didn't even play Greg Dolson was a healthy scratch last week. Corlin Sutton and a bunch of guys that nobody really knows. Javonte Williams it's kind of been stop and start he played better last week but you don't have you're not you don't have a bunch of guys you don't in other words you don't right now have Drew Brees and Marcus Colston slash Michael Thomas and Darren Sproles slash Alvin Kamara. You don't have Jimmy Graham. You don't have the typical Sean Payton parts but you are getting better. You got Steelers at Raiders.
I think we've talked quite a bit about that one. We still don't know as we sit here right now 235 Eastern 1135 Pacific who's even started a quarterback for either of those teams. It seems like it's Justin Fields for Pittsburgh but Mike Tomlin said for the first time Russell Wilson's gonna be a full participant so we'll see as we go through the week here. Falcons at Panthers again we'll skip past someone. Falcons have been there. They've been winning games at the end. The Panthers are just trying to figure it out.
We always knew it was an uphill battle personnel wise. Lions at Cowboys. TJ. Yes sir. I'm gonna give you the floor on this one.
Lions at Cowboys baby. This feels like a big one. It is a big one. By the way have you guys seen and I love him but have you seen Amman Ross St. Brown's Little Caesars commercial? Yes.
How they let the same guy do that. Who said who said that go ahead and do this commercial where the man just says the word meat over and over again. It just took me out. I'm just gonna say that.
So because of that we have the advantage going into this game talk. Wow. TJ it took us uh you know four days to give you the floor on a Cowboys topic and your response is Amman Ross St. Brown talking about meat. That's it. That's all you got. It's one of the marquee matchups in the entire NFL. Look man.
I'm confident in you. Your Cowboys are beat up. I'm riding high off of that Steelers win but again man any win that we can get when we don't have Lawrence and Parsons.
I mean that it's just gravy right. So Marshall, Nealon's beat up now too. So your pass rush is severely depleted. But like I've said all year all summer when we were talking about the Cowboys not picking up players or adding players.
These are all professionals Tom and they have to step up and I'm expecting people. Jalen Tolbert last week stepped up. Demarion Overshaun stepping up.
Mozzie Smith has been stepping up a little. So we just got to get our offensive line together and that's going to be tough when you've got you know Aiden Hudson coming and ready to wreck shop. So I'm really excited for this game. You know the Lions got something to prove after what happened in their last matchup.
But do they dare, do Ben Johnson and Dan Campbell dare to run a tackle eligible play? I think we get it on the first series. I think it is absolutely in the game plan. As a fan of stories yeah and I know knowing how those guys think.
No one out Ben thinks. You want this. Absolutely you'll have something in the plan. I don't know if we see it for sure.
But there will be something in the plan. Is it gonna be the same play? Is it gonna be a variation off that play?
Is it gonna be something really cool that we don't even know about? There will be something in there but we know in skip or tackle. Only the Chiefs are able to pull over these tomfoolery type plays anyway so but I hope they try it. The Lions ran what did they call the play last week the throwback to golf and that one's been that one's been cooking in the playbook for like three years according to golf.
Yeah Alcatraz that was that was the name of the play. Yeah I mean looking forward to it. Sunday Night Football Bengals at Giants. This is like one of those that feels like a week six elimination game. You know the Giants finally have some upward trajectory. It's at home.
It's at MetLife Stadium. You want to be taken for real? You got to beat teams like this. You got to beat Joe Burrow. For the Bengals you're one and four. A loss would make you one and five.
That would escalate quickly. Now you're talking about legit maybe needing to run the table. At least need to win nine or ten of your remaining games.
It gets harder and harder so that ends up being a very important game. And then Monday night I mentioned it builds at Jets. As I'm talking here I was buying time for some of the uh the quotes from Woody Johnson.
I got some too. What do you got what do you got over there? All right so from our buddy uh Mike Garofolo who was just just with us he said Woody Johnson says quote this is one of the most talented teams that we've ever assembled by New York. Says the move to fire Robert Sol will result in quote new energy and positivity that will lead to more wins starting now. New energy. That's that's it.
I call it the placebo effect. Yeah. But it's the idea that Jeff Ulbrich who's a different personality guys will feel like something is different.
What is he starting over? Woody also said he spoke to Aaron Rogers last night but didn't discuss Robert Sala specifically. Sure. Sure you right. What would you think if I fired a tall bald man tomorrow morning?
Didn't discuss Robert Sala specifically. I mean maybe yeah yeah he may be meaning like I didn't ask him hey should we fire the guy. Right. But but come on what are you talking to the quarterback?
We maybe we may be getting being generous with um definitions of the from the English language. I just found for me in Rapidport quote I just felt the best way to go forward was with a new direction said Woody. Just felt the right decision at the time. Johnson says it's the best team he's had in 25 years. They went to they do AFC championship games.
If you want to read the next level of this too. With Mark Sanchez. The other read of that yeah they yeah they went to back-to-back AFC championship games mainly because of the defense.
Almost made the Super Bowl. Another way to read that quote would be Joe Douglas has assembled the best football team we've had in 25 years. Joe Douglas doesn't have a contract beyond this season but he is employed right now and Robert Sala is not and I'm not implying that there's a power struggle or Joe threw Robert under the bus. My point is to the extent of this is Woody looking at the whole thing right now.
He's clearly not there. He's putting all the pressure on the coaches who are still there and Jeff Ulbrich and Aaron Rodgers and everybody else to figure this out. Most talented team in 25 years. Those Jets teams defensively were pretty good. You didn't have a four-time NFL MVP at quarterback but you had a guy Mark Sanchez who was half Aaron Rodgers age at that time. Mark was a good player back then. He made enough plays.
He played to the team that they were on. Didn't turn the football over. Made enough plays. He wasn't playing at a you know MVP level but he was playing well.
Aaron Rodgers I don't think he's playing bad but you would hope with all the pieces around him that you've placed there and you would hope with what they gave up to give Aaron Rodgers that you're going to hit on some of those passes. I have not yet seen if Garofolo got off his Devontae Adams question. Have you seen it, Brockman?
I haven't seen it yet. I was going to say to Garofolo, so you're telling me on live tv that your plan is to try to get Woody Johnson investigated for tampering. Is that what you're actually saying you're going to do on this conference call? I'm hoping. I'm hoping he gets great.
He gets the number punched up. Woody Johnson also saying according to Brian Costello they're not going to find ways to win by doing the same things over and over and over. Again a pretty clear pointing of the finger here by Woody Johnson that the issue is Robert Sulla. You fired him so I mean I'm not like breaking news on that but in essence you're saying the GM has put together a good enough roster.
The players are good enough. We need to change what we are doing and that's what they're doing from the top. We can get to some more. Woody's still talking.
I'm guessing this might go on for a while. Let's take a quick break here. Talk a little bit more about the big news of the day. Robert Sulla fired by the New York Jets where things go from here in the Big Apple.

he's not looking at you and he is Steve is a regular name well that's not Steve is a regular name Steve is my the name that folks can pronounce oh see now Steve has another name wow Steve what's your other name my real name which is three people called me my mom and my grandma and my wife is is actually Stevon now S-T-E-V-O-N-N-E now Stevon Stevon had you used had you used that name had you used that name right no you're the legend you are had you used that name do you know what happened in any city you're playing in everybody had a baby with a name their baby Stevon you know what happened she knows up I don't care what city you played in Carolina, Baltimore whatever city you played in that city would have had babies with that name Santa Monica every time he's going touchdowns going I'm naming my baby Stevon well right you're doing right well Steve Stevon thanks for coming on thanks for coming on Stevon thanks for coming on Stevon you got to even hey even hey even mentioning that name right now a few light bulbs you all some dirt the woody johnson conference call about today's big news the firing of head coach robert sala ongoing my other thing's woody johnson saying I just think the team can do better let's see oh there's an understatement yes that's usually why you do things like that he thinks the new leadership will bring out the best in players okay was asked about hot sound redick and according to our buddy garofolo who jumped off our show and then has been transcribing quote since says this is something I've never seen before you have to be part psychologist and part some other gist to try to figure out what is actually going on I hope that the young man can come to the team we'd welcome him with open arms when he gets here he'll find a very welcome locker room I that's actually true he's given up that's not redick's given up what like 10 million dollars at this point and the tab keeps giving up going up and if he doesn't ever report his contract holes and then he's still under contract with the jets for 2025 there's there's no one on earth not even his own agent who would advise hassan redick to have not shown up months ago literally months ago this is good money after bad for hassan redick although thankfully for redick uh this is not even in the top 10 of crazy things going on right now with the new york jets they have literally johnson tells redick to get in his car and drive up i-95 that should do it that's hey just drive yourself we're no longer gonna fly uh i mean think about this they lose the game in london and obviously this happens in the country where woody was once the ambassador to the uk under former president trump uh assuredly has various events and is seeing old buddies and then sees his team once again just looks stagnant particularly offensively and lose to the vikings you would imagine the emotion stacking up here but he fires the head coach the quarterback is trying to convince a wide receiver who's a buddy of his to come and join the team the pass rusher has never even practiced much less played in the game for the jets and remains estranged the gm is currently in a contract here not under contract for next season i'm sorry i can't even finish a thought could i just keep seeing more and more woody johnson quotes what do we got popping up hasan get in your car drive down 95 and come to the new york jets we can meet you and get you an escort right into the building presumably the same one who walked roberts all out good earlier today which by the way that's not that's not like a story i saw that getting flowed around like he was escorted out by security every coach who gets let go like you're walked out to your car you don't generally speaking bill bell check out to pack up his office most of the time it's hey we're gonna box your stuff up we'll mail it to you we're walking you out to your car wave goodbye to everybody and that's it that's that's completely commonplace here though you can imagine i mean these are these are real humans i started off the show today by talking about like i've known roberts all a long time i know what this meant to get this opportunity to him to his family and he's got a big family he's got a wife and i i can't remember how many kids six seven kids it's a lot seven or eight yeah uh you know they built a house out there it's you know you're talking about uprooting the whole family and you don't feel like i mean if you're robert sola realistically you feel like you got five games where you really had a shot and say what you will about who is in place trying to develop you know the initial offensive staff michael fleur is a good football coach maybe it wasn't the right fit for zach wilson but you draft the quarterback at number two and listen the best quarterback out of that draft class is trevor lawrence and he's still as we've been talking about all week up and down at this point in his career the rest of the quarterbacks taken in that draft class where zach went number two trey lance went three justin fields when i believe 11 to the bears and mac jones went 15 so none of those guys are even on the same team anymore except for trevor lawrence so you can argue you took the wrong quarterback but if you're in a spot where you have to drag up draft a quarterback and zach wilson's tape which at the time coaches and scouts would say if you just put on the highlight reel zach's got better tape from his last year in college than trevor lawrence does they were not alone in thinking we can do this with zach wilson and he's still talented and maybe he's the future sam darnold the common thread here is the new york jets haven't been able to figure this out on any type of a consistent basis in a long time and that's not to pin it all on woody johnson it's there is something about the way that they've structured the changes they've made the decisions they've made i mean they went from adam gaze to robert sola when adam gaze was hired he had won a lot of games in miami he had taken the dolphins to the playoffs that was it on its face like what in the world are they doing adam gaze was a guy who had a bunch of interviews he had just been fired he maybe was on the right mind frame to go to new york and make that thing work but that wasn't a off the wall type of hire robert sola was not an off the wall type of hire he had like four or five interviews in that cycle he and arthur smith were the two in-demand guys you had sam darnold he's now playing dare i say mvp caliber football for the minnesota vikings you had zack wilson again time will tell him that you currently have aaron rogers and him for five games plus four snaps last season wasn't enough to keep you from firing the head coach at some point everything the carousel has to stop spinning with the new york jets and while i understand the frustration level that you have as ownership here if you thought you were going to get five games into the season you're two and three you are one missed field goal away from being three and two if you thought robert sola is not the right guy to lead the team you should have done this after last season it would have been unfair to do it to robert sola then you can definitely argue it's unfair to do them right now they're looking for the juice and the energy and that's not because robert sola is a bad football coach it's because sometimes doing something different can make your players believe things are going to be different and they got with the whole country watching one opportunity to show that it is because if they go out with or without tavante adams even if they execute this trade it's not a sure bet that tavante would even be ready to play coming off the hamstring you got one shot if it looks the same on monday night if they get smoked by buffalo at home woody johnson has been saying as i continue to read the quotes this is my decision and my decision alone says he consulted with joe douglas but woody made the call if they play the same way and look like the same team on monday night woody's not going to go here it goes from it's him to now it's all of you and there is no telling what might take place from there in terms of changes now and in the coming months with the new york jets thanks to you guys for hanging with me here on the show thanks rich for zooming in thanks to all our guests pleasure being here i'm tom pelissero see you on the insiders bingo all right bill we're recording now and please put your phone on
