The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Community of Christ have a long-standing rivalry over the rightful succession of Joseph Smith's authority. A forged document, the Joseph Smith III Blessing, was presented to the LDS Church in 1981, claiming to prove that Joseph Smith designated his son as his successor. The document was created by Mark Hoffman, a member of the LDS Church, to embarrass the Church and gain financially. The LDS Church's leadership, including Gordon B. Hinckley, fell for the forgery and publicly presented it as authentic, leading to a significant embarrassment for the Church.
