The Bible teaches that the Christian life is a spiritual war against the forces of darkness, with Satan as the enemy. To wage this war successfully, one must first recognize the enemy and then put on the armor of God, which includes the belt of truth, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. This armor is not something that can be provided by oneself, but rather it is something that has been already put to use by God and is now available to believers. By imitating God in his role as divine warrior, believers can fight against Satan and his tactics, which include tempting believers with their fleshly lusts, corrupting the unity of God's people, robbing them of their joy, and hindering the furtherance of the gospel.
