The Doolittle Raid was a surprise attack on Tokyo by 16 B-25 bombers led by Lieutenant Commander James Doolittle in April 1942, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The raid was a success, but the planes had to land in China, and some crew members were captured or executed by the Japanese. Meanwhile, the Battle of the Coral Sea took place in May 1942, where the US Navy clashed with the Japanese in a naval battle that resulted in the loss of the USS Lexington, but ultimately thwarted the Japanese plans to invade Port Moresby in New Guinea.
