From the Mighty 990 Broadcast Center, you're waking up in Starnes Country with Todd Starnes. Good. Morning. Good morning. Good morning, Kristen.
It's Luke Symbol and Kristen New here in the Principal Toyota Memphis studio. We are filling in for Todd here on Starnes Country. We are.
So I guess Todd had a fun birthday and so much fun that he drank so much sweet tea that actually Todd is feeling a little under the weather. Yes, he was sick yesterday. I think he's back today at 11 a.m. Central Time for his Todd Starnes show.
So make sure to tune in later today. He will be back. You know, it's that time of year where the weather gets cooler. You got to take your vitamins, you know, wash your hands. You know, that's school.
Everyone's in school. All the kids are bringing home the germs. Yeah, don't touch anything. Don't drink after anybody. We've got to stay healthy here.
So last night, I came home and I turned on my TV and J.D. Vance was on my TV doing an incredible. Job. Wasn't that amazing at Ole Miss? Man, to have the Vice President of the United States take un you know, he did not have the questions ahead of time.
He took any question from any of the 10,000 students in that room at Ole Miss. Really, really incredible turnout. Erica Kirk spoke for seven minutes and was reading on X this morning that Every single student, all 10,000 stood For her seven-minute speech and never sat down. That is incredible. I missed her speech.
I didn't get hers. I came in late. But what I did see, I saw there were two students. One actually from the University of Memphis came and they let him ask a question. And another one who called JD, by the way, they called the Vice President of the United States.
He said, Hey, JD. And JD said, hey, man, I mean, how incredible. Like, I thought that was so amazing that they were all relaxed. JD was relaxed, but both of them asked questions about the Memphis Safe Task Force, which I thought that was great because it is on the hearts and minds of everybody. It is.
It is on the hearts and minds of President Trump, our U.S. Senators, you know, Haggerty and Blackburn, and our next guest who's calling in to the principal to Memphis studio this morning, our former U.S. attorney for the Western District of Tennessee and our current Representative in Congress, Mr. David. Kustoff.
Good morning, Congressman Kustoff. Good morning. Thanks for having me on. say that I was a non-student. at turning point yesterday at all miss.
And everybody stood up. the entire time that Erica Kirk spoke. Wow. The entire time. Wow, incredible.
You know, I feel like obviously that was such a tragedy with Charlie Kirk, but there seems to be so much hope. In spite of it, for the country, the young people getting involved, and then also here in Memphis and West Tennessee with the Memphis Safe Task Force being here. What are you hearing as you travel around the district? I know you're gone from sunrise to sunset visiting with constituents. What are you hearing about the Memphis Safe Task Force?
Well Okay, what all Incredible things. You know, you look at the results, over 1,600 arrests, 120-something known gang members arrested. To me, one of the incredible stats, when you see all these stats, the number of missing children that have been located, that have been found, which is 84 according to the last count. It was interesting, and I don't know if you all saw it or the readers saw it yesterday, posted online, a story from the Wall Street Journal about the Memphis Safe Task Force. And the headline is, In Memphis.
Many welcome. guard. And they They interviewed people. Throughout the city, and there was uh there was one and I'm trying to locate the in the articles somebody that owned a convenience store. And he talked about he talked about how safe it is now around his convenience store were prior to the guard coming in He was really concerned about the safety of everybody who shopped in the store.
Yeah. That's amazing. You know, uh Congressman, I have heard stories about there are some business owners who are putting no ICE, no National Guard. Signs on their door. And for me, that just doesn't make sense.
Why would you not want a safer Memphis to do your business? It's It's all bunk. I mean, y y you think about it. He could talk. To sometimes you ought to interview former Mayor Jim Strickland, who talks about when he campaigned on crime, when he ran the first time and the second time.
You know, this, I think everybody knows. It is The most important issue. When you poll people in Memphis and Shelby County. And there's really not a close number two. And so, what that tells you is that people are concerned about crime and they care about crime no matter who they are, no matter their political affiliation, no matter their race.
It is predominant. It doesn't matter who you are. you want to live in a Safe neighborhood. You want to make sure that your children and your grandchildren are safe when they go to school. You want to make sure that you don't have to be concerned about going to the grocery store or going to the gas station and getting carjacked or robbed.
It transcends. And so these few restaurant owners. Kristen and Luke, the the people who complain about the National Guard being here and about the enhanced federal law enforcement and the enhanced state law enforcement, they are definitely in the minority. The issue is they're loud. And so you've got You've got this group that is protesting certain restaurants that are trying to support the National Guard and the law enforcement, but they're the minority.
Totally agree. You know, I think people just really want government to do well at the basics. You know, it's crime, education, right? Appropriately, our streets. And speaking of, Taking care of the basics.
It's something that Senate Democrats are unable to do right now. We are in a government shutdown. I know you've done your job in the House. Republicans in the House have passed the necessary bills to keep the government open, but Democrats in the Senate are unable to do so. What are you hearing?
Do you think this shutdown is going to go on for much longer? But what are your thoughts on the shutdown?
So for everybody listening, you know, we knew back in September that the government could shut down on October the 1st because Congress has not passed all of its appropriation bills. We've got to pass 12 appropriation bills in the House and in the Senate. and we hadn't done it. September the 19th, sponsored a bill, put a bill on the floor for us to vote that would fund the government through. a date in November at the current funding level.
They call it a continuing resolution. what they call a clean continuing resolution where Nothing unrelated that doesn't have to do with government funding was attached. It was just to fund the government. And Luke, you can go back and listen to old speeches that Chuck Schumer's given, that Nancy. Jeffrey's good.
When they were in power, Or they would all say, vote for clean continuing resolution. because a government shutdown is a bad thing.
So when we took that vote on September the 19th, it passed. It passed. The House of Representatives. I will note. that every single Democrat In the House of Representatives, but one voted against the continuing resolution.
But it passed.
So it went to the Senate. And the Senate, through this week, has now voted. 13 times. on the same continuing resolution.
Now remember. Remember. Then in the U.S. Senate on a vote like this, it's not a simple majority. You know, you've got 53.
Republican senators, 47 Democrats. it takes 60. that the Senate has gotten. Has been 55. And It it is all a doubt.
placating to their Far, far left base. And as an example, Back in March, we ended up. Issue where we needed to pass a continuing resolution. We did. Chuck Schumer supported it.
He spoke in favor of it. And he just got. analytically annihilated. by his progressives and his party. I mean, w it He got roasted.
And so He doesn't want to go through that again. don't want to go through that. But the fact of the matter is Real-world implications. Federal employees are not getting paid. Federal law enforcement is not getting paid.
My staff is not getting paid. Marshall Blackburn's paper is paid. staff is not getting paid. Bill Hagerty's staff is not getting paid. These air traffic controllers.
are not getting paid. In the next few days, the SNAP benefits are going to run out for those who are the most needy in our community and across the country. And when people are coming up to me, If they complaint is respectful. Otherwise. Nobody's angry.
I say you have got to talk. To your Democratic senators and your Democratic congressmen and get them to do the right thing. I agree with you, and it's been really refreshing to see Republicans are winning the narrative on so many issues right now: whether it's the government shut down and appropriately assigning blame to the Senate Democrats, whether it's the crime issue, the education here in Memphis. You know, the local Democrat Party has spoken out against the Memphis Safe Task Force, has spoken out against attempts to bring accountability to our school system, and they're just on the wrong side. And so, thank you, Congressman, for what you're doing for spreading the message, for helping Republicans win the narrative and win on the issues.
We know that we are on the right side of the issues, and thank you every day for fighting for your district in Washington, D.C. Thank you for calling in and opening the show this morning while Kristen and I fill in. We hope you have a great day traveling the district. Thank you very much. Thanks for watching.
Can I ask one question? When can we expect a 14th vote? Do we know yet?
Well, so that's a good question. I i if they're in session a day uh liter spoon may try that. If not, it'll be next week. And and one of the you asked me about When it may reopen. The the one senator Told me, maybe more than one.
that they think that The Democrats won't get serious about reopening the government until after Tuesday's elections in New Jersey and Virginia and New York City.
So they're not doing it. For the good of the people. For the good of the people, they would vote to reopen and people would get paid and people wouldn't lose their benefits and they could take advantage of the constituent services that we offer. It's all about politics, and that's wrong. It is wrong.
And we're going to stay up to date, folks. Make sure you follow Congressman David Kostoff on Facebook, Twitch. He's on all the social media platforms. Congressman, thank you for joining us this morning, and we're going to talk to you very soon, I'm sure. Thank you very much.
You all have a great day. All right, you too. All right, folks, we're going to take a break. We're going to get some weather coming up. I think it's clear skies.
It's just a little chilly this morning. It feels like fall, but I love that. I hate a hot Halloween. All right, stay tuned because on the other side, we're going to talk about a major issue affecting a neighborhood in Memphis. All right, welcome back to the principal Toyota Memphis studio.
Luke Symbol and Kristen New here, filling in for Todd on Starnes Country. Right, Todd will be back this afternoon. He hasn't gone away, folks. He will be. Tune into the Todd Starnes show at 11 a.m.
right here on the Mighty 990. We have a very special guest in the studio with us this morning, Mr. Edward Douglas. Edward? Good morning.
Good morning, Luke. How are y'all doing today? Great. We're doing great. You ran for city council a couple years ago now.
Yes, sir, 2023. And did a great job. I think you were running. Were you running against an incumbent? Yeah, Michael Easter Thompson, the incumbent, yes.
Yes, which is always hard to run against an incumbent. You did well, came up a little bit short, but you are still fighting for Memphis and fighting for your community. And you're here to raise awareness for an issue in a neighborhood that you care about in Memphis. Why don't you tell us what's going on?
So here in the North Memphis area of the Douglas community, we have an illegal tire dumping uh business going on and we're just trying to spread awareness about it. Gotcha.
So there's a lot in Memphis, in North Memphis, where essentially it's almost like overnight, suddenly these tires are being dumped. And I saw a picture. I mean, these tires are way, way up in the air. Yes, and you can see it from the satellite view. Wow.
Is this a residential neighborhood? It is a residential neighborhood. How many are we talking? Like thousands? Mm-hmm.
Tens of thousands of people. You see it from satellite. That's pretty intense. And so, what I'm hearing is from you is the residents aren't happy. They are not happy at all.
And so, what are you trying to? You're raising awareness. You're going around the city talking about this, raising questions. First of all, where can folks find you? Are you on social media?
Yes, I'm on social media. You can find me on Facebook at Edward Douglas and Instagram at Edward Douglas. And so, you're talking about this. I know you're asking for the local. Republican Party to get involved.
And I think we're going to do some investigating and maybe shoot a video sometime this weekend. But what. What are you Are we trying to get these tires removed? What is the goal here? And what are you hearing from the residents who are living around the lot?
So the goal is to g uh get the tires removed because Uh, mosquito nests, and there's a potential fire hazard the way it's stacked up and building up. That if a fire was to break out, it could destroy the neighborhood. Yeah, our tires are toxic, they are very toxic and they're made with petroleum, yeah, so they are very flammable, yeah.
So, it's It also messing up with the air quality as well, so we just trying to keep. Memphis safe and clean, and that's my goal here with you all: to spread awareness with that. You know, I thought, according to Justin Pearson. That Uh XAI was ruining our City's air, despite all of the reports from the health department showing that the air quality is not worse. And that XAI and evil Elon Musk was coming to our city and was going to overrun with toxins and use up all of our poison murder.
So, where are the Democrats on this issue? I mean, I haven't heard anything. Right. I think they're being very hypocritical fighting against XAI, but are proving something like this to go down in a residential neighborhood in a predominantly black area. North Memphis, so Yeah, it's very hypocritical of them.
Easter Thomas done anything here? Has she spoken out about it? Have you seen anything on that? Most residents have inherited from her. That's why they reached out to me to try to get something done.
So Edward Douglas runs because he cares about Memphis against Easter Thomas. And Unfortunately, he is not victorious. And the residents now need help.
So instead of going to their councilwoman who they haven't seen since the election, they come to you. Yes, sir. Isn't that typical, though? You get people who run for office and they are in the spotlight and they say they care about you and they ask for your vote. And then once you vote for them, they disappear on you.
I feel like that is common. That is common. And people are feeling very disenfranchised by our leaders here.
Well, good for you, Edward. You know, I know you're active with the Republican Party of Shelby County and, you know, volunteer. You're active with the young Republicans. I think you were at the event earlier this week with the young Republicans. What are you hearing in North Memphis about the Memphis Safe Task Force and the efforts to, you know, the task force is going out arresting routine criminals, rounding them up?
Are you hearing positive things? Are you hearing that folks are afraid of the task? You know, the decarcerate Memphis types, the amber sure. Types are saying y'all are scared. What are you hearing from your neighbors?
That's not true. Most people that I've talked to are in support of the Memphis Safe Task Force and Safer City.
So we're actually very happy because we can actually go out without seeing drive-out tags speeding past us and. saying not saying, you know. People on the streets with guns and things like that.
So we definitely feel safer here in Memphis. Do you think? Your neighbors know that the Democrat Party has spoken out against the task force? I believe so, yes.
So we have got, I mean, Kristen, we have got to make inroads here and spread awareness that the Republican Party is the one supporting the effort, and the Democrat Party has literally held a press conference. Opposing it. Opposing it. Not only opposing it, I mean they're suing. They were trying to sue.
And get them out of here. What in the world? How about you say thank you? Yeah. Thank you for helping me because I needed help.
It's really amazing.
So, Edward, what. Um You ran for city council. You're now, you're still active in your community despite not winning that race, helping your neighbors, bringing awareness to this tire situation that we're going to look into. What's in the future for you? Are you running for anything else?
Are you looking to get involved elsewhere? Like, what's up with you?
So, right now, I plan on running for something else, but I'm just sitting back, waiting for the right time, announcing everything. As of now, I'm just doing my job teaching the youth. I'm a teacher. Most people don't know that you teach algebra too. Where do you teach?
Oh, I don't know if you want to teach me. I teach out in the Fayette County. Oh, Fayette County.
Okay, great.
Well, thank you for that. We definitely need some really good teachers who are civic-minded like you, and who can teach that to their students. You know, math was always my nemesis. Yeah, I did not do well. I mean, I would always, by the final, I would get a good grade, but it was like it always clicked for me after the test.
I don't think it ever clicked for me. I mean, algebra was rough. I did really well in geometry. Yeah, that's a little bit more tangible.
Well, Edward, thank you for joining us this morning. Stay tuned, folks. We have an exciting topic on the other side. We are going to talk about. Cannabis.
All right, and get involved, contact Edward, see how you can help him with his situation because we need to come together as a community. See you, Edward. All right, thank you, Edward. Welcome. Welcome back to the Principal Toyota Memphis studio.
Stars Country on KWham. It's Luke and Kristen filling in for Todd. And it is Halloween Eve, like the eve before Halloween.
So we're going to talk about some.
Some candy here, I guess. Guys, we have a topic this morning that is pretty exciting. We're going to talk about Randy Hutchinson, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South. Good morning, Randy. Good morning.
And we are talking about a very exciting topic: strong opinions: cannabis edibles. And a recent government crackdown from the FTC and FDA. What do you want to tell the Mid-South about what's happening with cannabis edibles? And actually, when I chose the topic, I didn't even relate it to Halloween, since it seems to be coincidental. Look, when it comes to cannabis and cannabis edibles, the better business bureau doesn't have a position on the legality or the wisdom of doing it and whatever.
Certainly, people of good intention have very different opinions on that. What we are concerned about, what I'm relaying today, is an FTC concern. That they've warned companies on two occasions, now maybe more, but two that I know of, they've warned companies who are marketing cannabis edibles. uh in packaging that intentionally or unintentionally, probably intentionally, the FTC is concerned, will appeal to kids. And that kids will end up eating some of these products, thinking that they're a normal potato chip or a normal gummy or something else.
Unbeknownst to them, it's a cannabis edible. And there have been cases where children, even unsuspecting adults, ate one of these products or ate a cannabis edible of some sort and ended up having a health problem. In some cases, they ended up being hospitalized. There are federal laws, forget the legality, illegality, whatever of the products themselves. There are federal laws that.
Ban deceptive marketing. And again, that's the concern of the FTC that these companies are marketing these products in a way that will appeal to kids in the packaging.
So we're talking about gummies, we're talking about cookies. What are we talking about here? Let me give you what I. I think is uh Perhaps the most outrageous example. company was, I assume they're not anymore.
If they are, then I think the next step in the FTC is to land on them pretty hard, go way past a warning letter. But there was a company marketing chocolate chip cookies called Trips Ahoy. Trips ahoy. I think everybody's familiar with the Nabisco Chipsahoy. Yes.
Chocolate chip cookies.
Well, again, the name was similar, and the FTC said that the packaging was similar to Chip Sahoy, including the use of a blue background, the depiction of a cookie with a bite taken out of it, other cases. Um In the first batch of letters a year or so ago, they warned a company that was marketing THC, which of course is a component of cannabis that has psychoactive intoxicating effects. They warned a company that was marketing THC-infused Doritos in packaging that, again, was nearly similar to, very similar to Doritos, nacho cheese, flavored tortilla chips. It contained the same red background, the Doritos name, triangle, two tortilla chips. And then there have been munchies, other sorts of candies, cereal products, names like Berry Boss.
Chocolate balls, cookie ket, crunch, that again, were sold in packaging that resembled other products.
So let me get at it real quick. The companies, brands whose products are being imitated are not at fault here. In fact, to some extent, they're victims also because their logos, their names, their reputations are being misappropriated to some extent.
So, Randy, folks, we have Randy Hutchinson with us, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South. What is your advice then to consumers, to parents, perhaps who are maybe they like to partake in such products that are legal and they have children in the home? Or what do you think about ways to avoid running into an issue? If you're going to have some of these cannabis-infused Gummies, candies, cereals, Chips, any other product in the home that you're going to use.
Okay. Keep it away from children. Keep it stored separately. Actually, the FTC says in the original packaging, which of course is part of the problem, but Hopefully this deceptive packaging will be done away with, but store it separately. Uh use child-proof cabinets and drawers just like you would uh you know household cleaners that if a kid got in uh household products including c cleaners that if a child uh got into drank Uh you would keep those separate.
Uh do the same with the the uh cannabis-infused edibles. Uh after you use it, completely reseal the package and and again, store it in a secure location and really talk to everybody in the family uh uh about The concerns and the warnings and the advice to just keep this stuff away from kids. Look, these are dad's cookies. Yeah, well, you know, used to you had to go hide in the woods and roll a joint.
Now you can just like eat a cookie, you could just stick it in a vape pin. I mean, how many times have you been out in public and you just it's just everywhere? There's actually a brand that plays off this. I think it's called like mom's juice or something, where I think it's like an alcoholic beverage and it's like too late or something. You put it in the fridge, but it very clearly that the brand says mom's juice.
So kids don't know.
So I don't know if they're doing it to be deceptive or are they doing it to try to lure kids or are they doing it because they think it's funny and it's just a marketing gig. I don't know. But whatever it is, if a kid is getting a hold of it, it's bad. I think most companies When they develop packaging, they develop product names. They do market research.
They've got an audience in mind. They do. And in this case, regardless of what their intent was, the FTC is more concerned about the effect. And to repeat, there have been many cases of young people, and I said earlier, adults unintentionally ingesting these products and ending up sick, but even worse, ending up in the hospital. There may have been deaths for all I know.
Well, yeah, you think, you know, if you're somewhere or you're at work or something and there's a package of cookies on the table and you don't look closely enough and maybe it's not, you know, it doesn't say in big letters, this is a case. cannabis infused or something. And I, you know, I'm heading off to a meeting. I pop in a cookie and suddenly it's a little bit of a drink. I would love to be in that meeting.
Well, and your eyes are maybe not all that good. And I don't know. Yeah, you see the ahoy, but you don't see the trips instead of the chips. That's right.
So we're going to have some very interesting meetings if that happens. But yeah, I am concerned about this. And I think that this is a great thing that they're doing to push back on this kind of marketing. And they did it with the vape pens. They had vape pens that tasted like strawberry and bubblegum, and they took those off the market because children were using them.
So anytime that you market like that, I do think that if there's a danger to children, we just need to go ahead and just. Absolutely. Hey, Cassie, make sure you're not bringing any trips-ahoy chocolate chip cookies into the studio. We don't want Todd walking by and taking a cookie, what he thinks is a chips-ahoy cookie, but it's really a trips-ahoy cookie. That would take Todd out.
Make sure I separate them. Yes, no, no, no trips-ahoy cookie, Cassie's, Cassie, in the studio. Oh my gosh.
So, this is very timely, like I said, with Halloween.
So, as you have Halloween candy all over your house, we always tell the parents to check the candy before your kids, but now you have to check to make sure that the candy doesn't have razor blades in them, but that they are not cannabis-infused.
So, folks, we have Randy Hutchinson, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South. Thank you for an enlightening conversation on cannabis edibles. Where can folks find more advice on various businesses and what you do?
Well, you can check out a business, file a complaint about a business, file a review, good or bad, about a business anywhere in the country at bbb.org, bbb.org, or you can call us at 759-1300. All right, bbb.org 759-1300. Thank you, Randy, for joining us this morning. It was a fun conversation. Coming up, Kristen.
Where in the world is Tiraid Tammy Sawyer? She seems to be missing. I think. Maybe there's some people that know. I don't know.
I don't know. Where in the world is Tyrate Tammy Sawyer? We are going to talk about that and much more on the other side of the break. Thank you for joining us. It's Luke Symbol and Kristen New in the principal Toyota Memphis studio, and you're listening to Starring's Company.
Don't go away. Cool. Kristen. We I've talked about a lot this morning. Cannabis.
Cannabis. Wait, so Randy Hutchinson of the Better Business Bureau, who's just in, he did not, you know, Better Business Bureau does not take a position on this, but you and I have very strong opinions. Oh, yeah. I am against we are very uncool. But sorry.
There is a term pothead for a reason, and it makes you dumb, folks. It makes you dumb. It makes you lethargic. It makes you psychotic. If you are under the age of 30 and you are a male under the age of 20, especially under the age of 25.
Uh it just it ruins your brain. And it ruins your brain, it ruins your reproductive system. Lots of friends, uh several friends who started smoking in college and just became dumb. I mean, they can barely deliver pizzas. Yeah, yeah.
Can't handle it, but can't handle it.
So, uh, if you disagree, well, that's our that's our opinion on it. Speaking of mentally deranged, Tammy Sawyer, where is Tirade Tammy? She's missing. She should be Carmen San Diego for Halloween because we cannot find where's Waldo. Maybe she could be Waldo.
Is she even showing up for work? Because we have not seen her. For somebody that has been out in the public who goes out into the public streets to throw big hissy fits, she has been surprisingly out of commission lately. Tammy, where are you? She, you know, she was at every press conference with Mayor Lee Harris denouncing the occupation of the Memphis Safe Task Force.
And she is, I mean, she has this little tirade on the courthouse steps, her racist tirade against. What do you mean you can't bring a gun into the courthouse? That is racist, Luke. What is wrong with you people? Oh, Shelby County voters.
This is what you get. Is what you get when you vote for somebody like Tammy Sawyer Bold.
Now she's missing. I don't even know if she's coming into work. I would be very curious to know if you are a whistleblower. Have you seen Tammy in her sweatpants and stuff? Isn't it just terrible what she wears to work?
Yeah, she wears sweatpants. She doesn't even have respect for her. And those nasty cheap leggings. You know what? Not even like the nice leggings that hold everything in, okay?
It's like those cheap leggings where you can see everything. You know what I'm talking about? It's like those Walmarts. I do not think yet. Come on.
See straight through it. Come on. Have some respect for yourself, Tammy. And let us know where you are. We would love to know where you are because you are so outspoken.
You always have an opinion, but lately she has been silent.
So I guess she is the invisible man for Halloween. Speaking of Tammy. You know, she was giving out potato chips. with her face on them. Uh, at the general session score, I don't, she literally had potato tip bags made with her face on them for, I think it was for jury.
Um, Uh, I used to like when I would get potato chips in my trick-or-treat bag as a kid. You liked potato chips? I like potato chips. I'm not a huge candy, like, I like potato chips. Chocolate candy, like a Twix or Reese's, or that type of like traditional candy bar.
I'm not into the whole like Skittles, Jolly Ranchers, you know, like that, that. Ch ch I always call it cheap candy.
So we had a neighbor growing up. Uh one neighbor gave apples Out. Oh, I know. And the other neighbor gave money. Like, they would just throw coins.
He just had this big coin. He would just throw coins. There would be probably a quarter or something in there. But it was so. I love getting money.
Uh, what did you dress up as?
Okay, so my and my if my parents are listening, they will call in mom. You know that this is true. Uh They were not Plan a headers for Halloween. Like, we like, we never, she never thought about getting us costumes. It would, like, October 31st roll around and I would try to be figuring out a costume.
So, like, one year, I literally took an old bed sheet that I'm pretty sure wasn't even white. And cut holes in it. Flowers on it. Yeah. It was like really fady, you know, like really old, like faded flowers.
Like you could probably it probably looked white in the dark, but uh cut eyes. And like the whole time I was tripping over this sheet. Anyway, it was pretty. It was pretty bad. My first Halloween costume that I can remember, I was Bugs Bunny, and it was the old Hallowe I'm on date myself.
Those Halloween costumes that were like plastic garbage bags, one piece things that they would sell like at Walmart, and then it had like the molded Plastic mask with elastic that you would put on your face. My favorite Halloween costume, I was She-Raw, Princess of Power, He-Man's Sister.
Okay, yeah, you have no idea what I'm talking about. No idea.
So. You want to take a we have a call. We have a caller. Hey, Linda from Germantown. You have a trick-or-treating story for us?
Yeah. when we first moved here. We didn't really know our neighbors. We moved in September. And so I took my children trick-or-treating, and the first house we hit.
Uh the guy I don't know what Asian country he was from. sweet man, but he gave my kids Call strops. Were they cannabis cough drops? That's the question of the day. a physician, so hopefully not the So, that was our first welcome to Memphis for my kids.
Oh, your poor children. They're like, where have we moved to? Oh, thank you for that story, Linda. I'm sure, you know, we're on Halloween Eve, so we're thinking about getting ready. It's kind of nice that Halloween is on a Friday.
Yeah, it's actually great. I actually bought candy because I think it's going to be busy. I think a lot of people are going to be out. It's not a school night.
So I bought a house last year, and it was my first Halloween in the house last Halloween. And so I. Hadn't gotten any candy. I was really busy. This time of year is very busy for me.
And a co-worker said, Luke, you've got to put candy out. Like, I know you're not going to be home, but like, you've got to put candy out.
So I went to the store. I spent all this money on candy. Candy's expensive. I spent all this money on candy, got a bowl, put it in a chair, and put it on my front porch.
Okay. The first kid's going to take all of that.
Well, no, this is.
So I was all proud of myself for spending the time to do this despite being stressed. And I get home later in the evening. When all the trick-or-treaters have gone home, and I did not realize that the way my Front door is recessed into my house, you cannot see the porch. Like it's completely dark. There's lights outside of the house, but you can't really see where the front door is.
Unfortunately, I need to fix that. And nobody could see that I had a bowl of candy on the porch, so it was full.
So you had your candy at the last minute because I will eat it all week long if it's just sitting there in the bowl, and then I have to rebuy it. I pick through, I wade through the bowl and get to the Reese's. The Reese's. And you know what's a great way to use Reese's from Halloween? Is if in this time of year in the South, it's perfect bonfire season.
S'mores, but instead of using Hershey chocolate, use a Reese's. Yeah. So you get that peanut butter and the melted chocolate. Cassie, you like that is? Cassie is my language.
Yes. I love language.
Sometimes I'll do like a Milky Way or like a Twix or something, but Reese's. Because you get that peanut butter and it's kind of melted with the chocolate. Did you ever have go by the like the more wealthier neighborhoods and get the full-size candy bars? Yes. Did y'all do that?
Yeah, the giant ones. That's my favorite. Yeah, we would go trick-or-treating in other neighborhoods. I always liked when I, my favorite candy bar, which. is controversial.
Is a take five. Do you know what a take five? I know what a take five is. Oh, it's got the chocolate and the pretzel and the peanut butter. I think Reese has bought it, but yeah, it's like chocolate, pretzel, uh, peanut butter.
So you get like the salty, sweet. Flavor all in one. I'm going to bring you a take-five if I remember. For sure. It'll be on discount next week.
But butterfingers get caught in my teeth really bad, but I do like them. I'm trying to think of the candy that doesn't exist anymore. Like the old candy. Like we used to get the old peanut butter. They were just wrapped in black.
Wax paper and orange wax paper, and they were disgusting.
Now I'm hungry. Goodness gracious.
