If you missed it live, don't worry, we say the best parts. This is the Drive Podcast. Back at it on the Drive, right here on WSJS, where. I'll pass along this update.
So it looks like the College World Series. Game one tomorrow, which we are carrying here on WSJS, has been moved up to a 3 o'clock start time to East to Central. That's three o'clock our time. Due to some inclement weather that could be rolling through Omaha tomorrow, so just wanted to pass that along: that the game will be significantly sooner in the day than. What was originally scheduled.
Um The USA. They've beaten Australia 2-0. To win their first two games. We'll give you a little more reaction to that in a minute, but right now.
Now that everything's finalized, let's get to Dalton's Dollars. Stay. Stack a stack, got a stack. Yeah. Get the money, get the money all the time.
It's time to cash in. Welcome to Dalton's Dollars. Come here, Muggins! Show me the money. Breaking down the board and building the bankroll.
Okay.
So We finally Got up over 500 again at 37 and 36.
However, Little bit of a mixed bag. Placed five bets.
So let's go through each one. I took the Yankees' money line against the White Sox last night. That did not go over well for the Yanks. Five to one the final. Chicago coming into the Bronx and getting themselves a win.
So that was a negative Ghost Rider. The St. Louis Cardinals Wanted to get in on them. They were at Kansas City, the Royals. Ah, the Royals won fourteen to six.
Yeah. SHOW ME THE FIRE! No, actually, that was not. I took the Cardinals. The Royals won 14-6, so shut up, Jerry McGuire.
Not getting that one. Then Took the Athletics at home against the Angels. 5-0 shutout. A's at least gave me one win in baseball yesterday. Show me the fire!
That's right.
So that cache. Then we had. The two Bets for this match between the USA and Australia. First of all, we took the USA money line, that cashed. SHOLBIN DIVINE!
But I also took over two and a half goals, the total. Got pretty good odds or good value, decent on that one. But this final was too. Nail.
So We went two and three. In total. Which means we are now 39 and 39. Back to 500. Could be.
Better could also be worse. We'll take a nice 500 record into the weekend, and we'll just. Sit with what we've got. That's been Dalton's dollars. Getting back to the match specifically.
Chirping between the USA and Australia, I guess. The USA came out on the right side of things. We can get to this clip because Um One of the things that cause a little bit of friction going into this match was Something that Mike Greller said. And he's an analyst now? former player.
Um for the USA and he believed that This was going to be a layup. That was the term he used, layup. Specifically, And it caused a bit of a stir this week. Uh between or amongst Australian pundits. the players, alums, things like that.
'Cause Australia, I guess, has not been traditionally known As a great soccer team, but then again, you could say the same thing about the USA to a degree.
So there was fodder there for both sides and Mike Ghrella. To his credit. He heard the noise and He went on Pat McAfee earlier today before the match and doubled down. But there's this elephant in the room. It's the fact that Australia is not known for football, right?
It's like saying, you know, it's like the Egyptians getting upset because we're not saying they're good skiers, right?
So I keep going back to the math. I keep going back to what I know about the game. And I mean, maybe I'm nuts, but that says plus 425 on your screen right there. Plus. 425.
And so, if you want respect in football, you have to earn that respect. You have to go for it, you have to play the game. And the USA came out on the right side of that. And now For the first time. And A long time.
For the first time since 19 30. The USA has won their first two games or first two matches. In the group stage there. Um So it's very exciting. And maybe they could, you know, I still don't think the USA is going to win the whole thing.
Morgan's like, Uh, maybe, you don't know. And I don't think they're going to be winning the whole thing. But the new advance to the knockout rounds and. You know. You love to see that.
So I don't think. The 4-1 against Paraguay was a fluke. I don't? And There seems to be some nice young talent. on this USA team.
Excited to see what comes next for him. We'll continue to react to that and Their next match is going to be against Turkey.
So We'll keep things posted on that next week, but USA getting a nice win today. Shout out to Marshawn Lynch. Getting the people going before the match here, because it was in Seattle. He is a Seattle legend. Saw Russell Wilson and Sierra up in the box hanging out.
Broncos Country, let's ride, doesn't apply today. It's all about the Seahawks. A Seattle. A yo, Seattle. If you know, you know.
But here was Marshawn Lynch. Ahead of the match, getting the people fired up. Hey, look, check it out. You feel me, though? Look, we got a big one, though.
It ain't no different from the ones that we done played before. But look, the thing is, we gotta keep our minds cool. You feel me, though? Our legs ready. And we gonna go.
You ready? You feel me? All right, y'all still feeling me though?
So, hey, but look, we gotta get in there, we gotta do what we gotta do, we gotta get up out of there, get up out of there, and then we on. I'm fired up. I'm ready to go play. Yeah, you feel me you ain't gotta keep it shouldy funky. Right.
America by a million! Yeah. If that doesn't get you ready to run through a wall, I don't know what does. And then you had Jameis Winston has just been gold throughout this run. Have you seen The Adventures of Jameis Winston?
Yes, did you see that he had a goat? I did see Jersey on set, what was it, earlier in the week? He did, and then he was helping the Japanese pick up trash. Like that, that's nice. Because that's what they do when they go to sporting events.
They pick up trash like afterwards. Like that's a thing, apparently. Yeah, clean up after yourselves. And Jameis Winston was out there. Helping out.
So did you see what Jap Japan, you know, the iconic crosswalk in Japan where everybody floods the streets? No.
Okay, well, it's in a lot of movies. They just, it's a very busy crosswalk. Is that the Beatles? No, that's in England. It's a huge one.
It's a four-way one that goes diagonally across the street. And when they won their first World Cup match this year, they all ran and they waited for it to turn into the walking sign, and they all ran into the street, and then they ran off of the street once it turned back to red. It was very wholesome content from Japan. That's hilarious. Um Let's transition to the hurricanes very quickly.
Hmm.
So tomorrow, you know, the Knicks, the Knicks had their day. The other day, Tomorrow's About the Canes. And I've been thoroughly enjoying seeing The journey that the Stanley Cup. Has been on Going around uh Different like uh Trip Tracy One of the play-by-play guys, along with Mike Maniscalco, he was at Rod Brendemore's house, and they took a picture with it the other day. Um And then they were at some Golf course in Asheville yesterday, and the couple's there on the T-box.
It's just terrific. It's great. Um They all take turns with it. That's a thing. And The Kanes, we've seen One of the floats already.
Somebody got a picture. If you're watching on YouTube and X, somebody got a picture of it on. Um the highway earlier today.
So you got Stormy. The Keynes logo championship up on the top there, then you got the seats on the top of it. Very exciting. Just had Bryson Carbley on a little while ago who. was the viral Keynes fan who tattooed Essentially, an entire sleeve of Kane's tats on his arm.
He's got one of Stormy, one of the warning flags, and then one of the Kane's logo with the cup to finish it off. Incredible story there, but. I mean, when you look at this run for the Kanes and as we celebrate tomorrow. and watch everything unfold in downtown Raleigh? The one thing that I'll be thinking about.
is just the patience and the journey that this Corps went on. Because You know, we talked about it yesterday. Tom Dundon, since he took over as owner in 2018, he was the guy that made Rod Brindamore the head coach. And This core of Svetchnikov and Aho and Martin Nook and Jordan Stahl, they've been together for a long time. Obviously they've added some pieces along the way, like Ehlers and Bussey and Stankoven, but The main guys have have been there for the whole thing and I thought it was interesting.
Jordan Martinuck. Marty party, as we call him. Went on with the spittin' chiclets guy yesterday. He had the cop sitting next to him, Fresh shave, shaved the playoff beard off. Actually, it wasn't a playoff beard, it was just his typical beard.
Um And he talked a little bit about The patience that you know, the canes have had and How long he had waited to specifically win a Stanley Cup because they've been knocking on the door a long time. He talked about that. waiting game that he played with the hurricanes. It sucks that it took this long, but honestly, like good things take time and it is worth it. Like, if it's it's gratifying and knowing that I've been here for The whole whole time and there's times I thought about that I was maybe not gonna be here, but I just couldn't imagine leaving and then they do this without me.
Like that would have ripped my heart out. Yeah. And again, Jordan Stahl, 14 seasons, the captain. It's been a long wait. For a lot of these guys, because they've been in the playoffs the last eight years, they've won at least a playoff series the last eight years.
And I don't know if you guys remember this or not. There was a tiny faction of the fan base, as idiotic as it sounds, As soon as a year ago, we heard this. People after the Canes got swept by the Panthers again in the Eastern Conference finals were. Trying to Say that Brenda Moore had reached his ceiling. He'd maxed out as a coach.
This has been great, you know, in terms of the consistency of the playoffs, but. He can't get us the rest of the way. And there was, believe it or not. A faction of the fan base who was ready to move on from Rod Brenemore. Those of us that watched it closely, we remember that, which it's crazy to say.
Because He finally got it done, and I don't think there was. I don't think there was anything to show that he couldn't. It just. They had a Stay consistent. They had to stay persistent.
They had to add a few extra pieces. I mean, they overachieved last year. That was another piece of that as well. And there has been an element of patience that the Canes have had. That has You know, you could view that as doing things the right way, building a system, a machine.
the right way, and now you're reaping the benefits. Of that. Jordan Martinook, I thought he had some interesting things to say about that in terms of. You know, wanting to stick it out with. The canes.
'Cause they were knocking on the door for years. They really were.
So The parade tomorrow. Very excited. To follow that. And then watch the College World Series this weekend. By the way, sold this report earlier today.
Courtesy of Mark Stein Who's pretty plugged in on these things? Apparently, the Detroit Pistons. are showing interest in Kobe White. Of the Charlotte Hornets.
So I guess. They don't have a deal done just yet. Kobe White. Um Not officially locked in with the Hornets just yet. Here's another quote.
League sources say that while the Hornets hope to retain Kobe White, there is a perception in circulation that he could indeed. Be gettable this offseason. In that scenario, Charlotte could certainly try to execute a sign and trade deal. to prevent losing him. For nothing.
I think losing Kobe White would be a bad mistake. personally. Yeah, I tend to agree with you. I think it would be a mistake. And no shade to Colin Sexton.
But I think that move to bring Kobe White home, I think it was. I'm not going to go as far as to say a turning point for the Hornets because the Hornets were already on their way, starting to. Pick up some steam before that move. That was just like perfect move at the perfect time to really kick in the turbo a little bit. But the depth that he provided off the bench As a six-man And we saw it.
In the biggest way possible, in that play-in game against the Miami Heat, where he came in and just. Shot the lights out and was really the reason that the Hornets got back into that game to pull off the win in the end. I think it'd be a mistake to lose him. I really do. I think that's somebody you need to try and retain.
I mean, that is a guy that can come in off the bench and get you 20 just like that. Just like that. That was one of the things that the Hornets, you know, listening to the players, they talked about when that move was made. It's like, yeah, this guy can get his own shot. He can move.
He can get you 20 in his sleep off the bench. I don't know why you would want to. lose a guy like that.
So We'll see how that plays out. We're getting close to the NBA draft next week. We'll see if the Hornets move up to potentially get a big man like an Ade Mara, maybe Jackson Lindeborg, what they might try to do. And what what's going to happen with Kobe White? But those negotiations NBA offseason.
The finals are great. The finals are the best. But as soon as that's done, I mean, the stories just pick up and they pick up and they pick up. And we are here for all of it. All right, I think all the levels are set.
Showtime.
Now? Welcome to the drive, setting the sports agenda before dinner. Back at it on the drive, right here on WSJS. We're following USA Australia. The USA leads 2-0.
It's in Seattle, so they're showing.
Some Seattle legends, you could say. Marshawn Lynch is up there. He's getting the people going. Before the game They just showed a shot of Sierra. In the press box?
Which I guess one would think Russ is around there somewhere. Russell Wilson's around there. There he is. Speak of the devil. Just popped on the screen.
Yeah. Broncos Country Yeah. Not today. Not the day. Uh also, forgot to mention at the top.
We are going to be joined. And hour number two by a viral Keynes fan. who gave up his arm For this hurricane's Stanley Cup run. You might know what I'm talking about. You might not.
But You'll find out for sure in hour number two. Excited for that conversation. But right now, we're in the world of the NBA where. It's the start of the offseason. The draft is next week.
So there's no shortage of stories. There's juice. And let's talk. He's Morgan has compiled a list. of statements about You know, they're almost like story, they're headlines essentially.
This is going to happen. And I'm going to tell you whether or not it's fact. Or fiction. Let's do it. Yannis.
will leave Milwaukee To join the Boston Celtics. this off season. I I keep going back and forth on this one. The Celtics and the Miami Heat. They're in the driver's seat.
I'm gonna say that's Fiction. I think somehow, some way. Giannis is going to join the Miami Heat. I don't think that's the right decision. Because it It's not a lateral move.
But it just feels like Eh, like if you have to give up Tyler Hero. And some other weapons if you're Miami. Bam and Ghana's I'm sure they could maybe add a little something else, but it's like: is that a top contender in the East? I don't think so. I also just don't think that the Celtics are going to break up Tatum and Jalen Brown.
I know there's a lot of talk about that. I don't think they're gonna do it. I really don't.
Now, if they could find a way to just add Giannis and keep both of those guys, I don't know if there's a path to that or not, but. I'm gonna go out on left field here and say. That's fiction. I think he's going to Miami. Your guy, LeBron James.
Will stay in Los Angeles and play for the Lakers this upcoming season. That's fact. That's fact. And I hate to say that because I want to see him go to Golden State. Because I think that would be such a fun storyline.
And I get it. He's old. He's got maybe A year. Or two left. Two tops.
But and While Steph is old. There's something about when you're a shooter And you play that type of like Ray Allen played forever.
Now I think Steph is more bald dominant than what Ray Allen was. But Man, that would be just such a fun match. That would be such a fun crew to follow. Steph. LeBron Draymond pods, if they drafted Adamara.
Man, it would be a lot of fun. But I think The boring thing's going to happen, and I think he's going to stay with the Lakers because they're already having conversations, according to Brian Windhorse.
So when I was researching for this segment, and looking up some some off-season headlines. one that I haven't heard a lot about kept popping up.
Okay.
About my clippers. Yeah. Apparently, there's a lot of rumblings about Kawhi Leonard getting traded this offseason. Will he be moved? Fiction.
Dang it. That's fiction. Kawhi's not going anywhere. Darn. I have also seen this Clippers.
Report Um You know, Steve Ballmer worked very hard to convince Kawhi to leave what was already a championship situation in Toronto. They won in 2019. And Join the Clippers. Paul George. Back in the day.
It just They were trendy. There was a time where there were people that actually thought that the Clippers might even be better than the Lakers back when LeBron first joined the Lakers and Kawhi first joined. The Clippers But throughout the years, whether it's just Load management. Not being able to stay healthy. Paul George and Kawhi not working out.
Then James Harden and Paul George Kawhi not working out. hasn't been pretty at times. Like they've been a solid team. But they're cool.
Alright, that's not why you bring in Kawhi. But with all that said, I don't think he's going anywhere. Fiction. Heading to the NBA draft, we talk about Darren Peterson making headlines only talking with the Wizards.
So will he go to the Wizards at number one overall? Fiction. Fiction. It's starting to ramp up.
So we had the reports over the weekend that Darren Peterson is only working out with the Wizards. He's basically telling everybody else to kick rocks, which given Everything else that's gone on with him over the last year or his year at Kansas, I don't think that's a great look. But I mean, he's a talented player, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think that is a great look. I really don't.
And I think people should just not overthink this. I'd love to see her and see Caleb Wilson go number one overall. In fact. We played a clip from Draymond Green on his podcast yesterday talking about how Caleb Wilson might be the best player in this draft. He's still.
For all he's still I'm trying to remember how Draymond put it. Can't walk straight or something like that. Can't walk and chew gum. We played that clip, right? Did we not play that clip?
No.
In five things of five, we didn't play that clip. I'm going to be 100% with you. I don't think I have that clip. I'm pretty sure we did. Pretty sure we did.
But he essentially said Caleb might actually end up being the best player in this draft. He's just not. polished yet. Whereas AJ DeBonsa is very polished, very pure score shooter.
So let's not overthink this. He's going number one overall, which means Darren Peterson going to the Wizards is fiction. Caleb Wilson. will go to the Chicago Bulls. with pick number four.
That's facts. That's facts. So Back when The college basketball season first ended. And draft talks started to really begin to ramp up a little bit. Much like what I just said, I was saying maybe Caleb Wilson.
Could go number one overall. Like, maybe he's a sleeper. I just. I do believe he could end up being the best player to come out of this draft. But I don't think he's going to go number one overall.
Don't think he's going to go two or three because just looking at this, AJ DeMonso is going to go number one. And You know, I think. I think Darren Peterson ultimately. Goes number two. To the jazz?
Memphis is interesting because, you know, Memphis, the edginess of Caleb Wilson could be an interesting fit. But I think ultimately Memphis is gonna grab Camboozer. I actually wouldn't be surprised, by the way, if Utah grabbed Camboozer. You know why? His dad is in the front office there.
Carlos Boozer is in the front office. At the Utah Jazz. I did not know that. And he also played for the Utah Jazz back in the day a little bit.
So I actually I'm not concrete on Darren Peterson going to because of the Utah Jazz Carlos Boozer tie. It actually might be camboozer, because like why would they... It's I mean, it's not, and it's not nepotism. He's a lottery pick. It's just like: if you're going to pick one, wouldn't you go with somebody you have?
How do you have the greatest intel? His dad works in your front office and is a pretty stand-up guy.
So that's going to be interesting. But I think the Chicago Bulls are going to take Caleb Wilson. Shout out to Michael Jordan. From Carolina to the Bulls back in the day, and now it's Caleb Wilson. Playing for Tiago Splitter.
New head coach there. Last and certainly not least, we have talked a lot. About Charlotte drafting a big man in this draft. Where they currently sit with pick 14 and 18, a high-caliber big isn't really projected in that area. Do they train?
Up. in the draft to get a big. I'm gonna say yes. I think Charlotte's gonna make a move. I think they're gonna make a move up to either get Ademara?
Wouldn't be surprised to see Jacksl Lindenborg. available potentially at where they move up to. I've also seen Quite a few mock drafts having the Hornets taking this. It's a Uh Lopez, Kareem Lopez. Who's reportedly supposed to be the best basketball player to ever come out of Mexico?
Alright. Um That's a possibility as well. Which in that case I don't think they trade up to get him. I think they could sit back and wait and get him. Um But yeah, I think they make a move.
I think they do. Facts.
Now. Kevin O'Connor. Of Yahoo Sports. apparently does not see Charlotte making a move up to, let's say, ten eleven He thinks Charlotte's going to stay right where they are at number 14. And Here who or here is who he has taking Or how here is who he has the Hornets taking.
It's a Friday. Let me alone. At number 14. Number 14, Marez Johnson to the Charlotte Hornets. Again, I've had Marez Johnson here, I think, five mocks in a row at this point.
I do not foresee Marez Johnson falling past the Hornets at 14. That seems to be what everybody around the league is assuming right now. Does it mean it's true? He might even go higher. Maybe he does slip past Charlotte, but all indications are the Hornets are trying to reshape their front court.
They're very happy with Musa Diabati and drafting Ryan Kalkbrudder last year, but it seems like adding more depth there, more versatility, having more ways to play. There's nobody better than Marez Johnson with his ability at 6'9 with a 7'5 wingspan and elite athleticism where he can play some three for you. He can play some five. He can plug and play into different roles. He would make perfect sense for the Charlotte Hornets.
He's physical. He can rebound. He's tough, so I wouldn't hate that pick. You know about Moraz Johnson. I do, and I also know a lot about Musa Diabate.
Also, he went to Michigan. Oh, yeah, that's already bad. But Moraz Johnson is a guy that does not give up no matter what. We've seen throughout March Madness him sprint down the court to make a play or try to make a play. He doesn't give up.
His attitude, I think, would fit very well in Charlotte's culture of trying to build new, start anew, and his attitude towards that would fit great there. I don't hate this pick. For Charlotte, I think what they would, if I'm Charlotte, I would look for a more of a traditional big, but wouldn't be mad if Moraz Johnson fell into my hands. Your attention, please. You're on the drive, built for fans who never changed the station.
Yeah. Still 2-0. USA over Australia. In the 71st minute here. Group D Yeah.
USA looking to take a stranglehold on that if they can get a win. Today They'd clench.
So we'll keep you posted on that. A viral Hurricane Super fan is going to join us in hour number two. But right now we get to A segment That once I took over this show, created this for, we used to do this on occasion in the past, but like, it's like, we got to. We got to make this more of a permanent stable because I'm a nerd. I mean, I'm rocking a Game of Thrones shirt right now, for goodness sake.
Winter is here if you're not watching on YouTube, it's what it says. Nerd corner. Let's see what's happening in the nerd world and qu and spoiler, quite a lot. Talk nerdy to me. For the curious mind, knowledge never sounded so good.
Talk nerdy to me. It's where nerdiness takes the mud. Tune in. Geek out. Mm-hmm.
Your attention, please. From sci-fi to Wi-Fi. Talk nerdy to me. Nerd Corner starts now with Will Dalton. Get nerdy with me.
Okay.
I have so much on my note here for Nerd Corner this week. It's just overflowing. Right at the top. We gotta get to something big that's happening this weekend. Massive.
And I'm not talking about the Hurricane Celebratory Parade tomorrow, while that is massive. I'm talking about the premiere. Of season three of House of the Dragons. Don't roll your eyes, Morgan! Have you ever watched Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon?
Any of it? It's not my thing. I see. It's not my thing. Well, it is mine.
Again. I'm wearing a Targaryen Game of Thrones shirt right now. And a house of the dragon. Season three starts on Sunday night. This season.
So For those of you that are kinda into it You will recall that season two was supposed to be, or you thought was going to be a lot of the big battles that were going to be taking place as things started to. Clash a little bit. And we didn't really get a lot of that. It was a lot of. Like, we got a few little battles, but like, it just felt like everything, every episode was like, maybe this is the one, maybe this is the one.
And ultimately, literally, all season two was, was the ultimate preview to season three. That's it. That's what it was. Season three is going to be a madhouse. Apparently, the first episode is 72 minutes.
Yeah, the Battle of the Gullet The greatest, most bloody sea battle in West Rose history, apparently.
So that starts Sunday. Here's something else that's happening. Grand Theft Auto VI Yeah. It's f we it's finally Almost here. Have you now?
You're into this. Yeah. I'm not a big GTA. You're not into Grand Theft Auto? No, no, I'm not.
I just play NCAA. Uh dirt track racing. Respect.
So we have the cover art for GTA Six. Oh, we do. Yes, I probably should have pulled.
Well, I can get it right here. If you're watching on YouTube. X The cover art, it has arrived. It looks terrific. We have.
Learned that it is going to officially, after so many delays and setbacks over the years, the GTA 5 released in 2013 to give context to those that are aware of these things. Uh, it's gonna release on November 19th. Here's the cover art on our YouTube channel right now, our X stream. Looks terrific. Um Pre-orders are going to start June 25th.
So it's It's coming. It's coming.
Next on the agenda. Staying in the gaming world.
Now, you are you into black ops? No.
Oh, lordy. I just have learned. That Black Ops 1 and 2. Which what two of the greatest hits that Call of Duty's Call of Duty's ever put out. Going to be re-released.
In July. Not remastered, to be clear. Unfortunately. But they are going to be re-releasing it. Campaign, multiplayer, zombies, the whole nine.
So that's very exciting. Black Ops 2 might be the most popular Call of Duty of all time. It's in the conversation. Lastly. Apparently Anthony Davis is a massive Lego nerd.
Do you know this? Did you see this? I did not know this.
So Anthony Davis. I don't know what podcast he was on, but he was talking about. How he actually missed the call or something. For his massive Lakers extension back in the day. Why?
I'll just let AD tell you. What's one hobby that you have that would surprise most people? I love to build Legos. You're you're just layered. It's funny because my agent called me my last two extensions.
And I wasn't answering the phone. He was like, man, you just got... Pay the highest extension in NBA history. and I can't get a hold of you. I saw her I was building Legos.
Like I'm sorry, I took some of the $128,000 million to buy some Legos that I'm working on. I build Legos. I have an entire collection of Legos. I love to build Legos. I I love that.
He's got time with all the injuries he has. Ah, jeez. Respect to I I again I'm a nerd, so I really appreciate when these high-level. Athlete show The different sides of themselves, especially when it includes being a nerd, like. Is Legos nerdy?
Oh yeah. It's definitely nerdy. Miles Turner. has an incredible Lego Star Wars Lego collection. What was your line of Legos?
Like, what was your favorite one? I was a Lego City guy. I liked the practical uses.
So I had a Millennium Falcon. I had a. Star Destroyer. And I used to have all the Bionicles. Do you remember Bionicles?
Yeah, I do remember the Bionicles. Yeah, those were pretty cool. That was my go-to back in the day. Believe it or not, I was not a massive Lego builder. Like, I didn't have a ton of different sets.
And I haven't built a Lego Anything in a long time. Love the video games though. The LEGO Star Wars games? Had it on the DS. Oh, yeah.
GameCube. PlayStation Love it. And that's been Nerd corner. It's me, Mario. Glad I was able to get that off my chest.
I've been holding on to a lot of that stuff for several days now. Just had to find a spot for it. Facts, feelings, and the occasional bad idea. I'm a kid in, I'm a kid in. I'm a kid.
I'm locked in. Welcome to The Drive, the Triad's longest-running live sports talk show. Back at it on the drive right here on WSJS. Continuing to keep an eye on things in Seattle 2-0 right now. Between the USA and Australia approaching the 84th minute.
We'll see how things shake out there. USA trying to get themselves a shutout win, and that'd be pretty nice now, wouldn't it? Tomorrow Begins the final series of the College World Series, UNC. Oklahoma. That's a game you can listen to right here on WSJS.
Tomorrow, the coverage time will start at 7:45, and then on Sunday, those are the two games that we know are guaranteed: best of three series. On Sunday, it'll be 2:15. in terms of The covered start. But Scott Forbes? been the head coach of the Tar Heels three years now and This is two of three years that they've made it to Omaha.
I mean, we've been talking all week long about how. You know, Carolina has been to Omaha so many times and had not closed the deal. 13 times in program history. Nine times in the last 20 years, and as I just mentioned, two in the last three.
So it's like it's time. It's time to close the deal, but Putting that aside, you gotta love the consistency. that Scott Forbes has started to create, picking up right where Yeah. Coach Fox left off. Uh and his his time with the Tar Heels.
In fact, Here was Scott Forbes. Yesterday, meeting with the media ahead of the final series in Omaha, talking about that consistency. But we define cultures, how you do things, how we do things around here. And that's the joy of being a head coach. That falls on me and instilling that the standards.
But then the players have to buy into it and they have to believe in it and they have to understand that, hey, how they do things every single day is important. We can't talk out of both sides of our mouths.
So these guys that are now have been in the program for three years, they do understand that we are going to do things a certain way around here. And we're going to respect the game. And you can You can see that trickle down to the players and that mentality that he just described. Right there. They do seem to go about things.
the right way and To his point again, one of the reasons I feel like it's College World Series or bust for the Tar Heels is because of the. Experience of the guys that he's had for the last two, last three seasons. You know, they've. They've been here, they've done that, and you look at guys like Jason DeCaro, Gavin Gallagher, like they've got some guys that. It's time to go ahead and cash in.
As hot as Oklahoma has been. I mean, they might be. the hotter team right now of the two, but Carolina is more experienced in this and The pitching staff is better, the bullpin is deeper, so Carolina. Oklahoma. Going to get it started in Omaha, the final series, best of three starting tomorrow.
Again, you can listen to that right here on WSJS starting at 7:45. Also, Got to remind you of the YMCA.
So, right now, in fact, I. Drove past the Kernersville YMCA. Just yesterday. And They were putting this out on the sign out in front, and now I'm telling you again: the outdoor pools, they are now. Open, so get your kids ready for summer swim lessons.
They've been teaching swim lessons for more than 100 years now. I bet I took swim lessons there when I was a kid. Um summer sports, by the way, as well, open for registration.
So they're going to have basketball, t-balls, summer sports camps. You can learn more about that at ymca nwnc.org dash. Sports and also if you have A membership at one northwest North Carolina, why I'm saying it will get you into all. of their different locations.
So don't miss out on that summer Ramping up. Talking about Omaha. Talking about the pool. It's that time. It is that time also The US Open?
Going down. Uh right now in the world of golf. I saw uh Wyndham Clark. was leading the way. Have you looked at the leaderboard lately, Morgan?
I have not looked at the leaderboard, but I have looked at the controversy.
Okay, so there's controversy out there.
So, this I don't remember off the top of my head where they're playing. I should know this. Seneca? Senegal? No, that's a country in the world cup.
But uh Essentially, the course is a really difficult course. It's one of the hardest courses they go to. Barely anybody breaks even. And the U.S. Golf Association, the USGA.
injected the greens with water. To make it easier to play. Really? And everybody is putting very easily. They're in New York.
They're in New York. Yeah, they're playing very easily on the Greens. The Greens are rolling really nice. And I talked with Beck, who was in the morning show, and you can listen tomorrow at 10 a.m. on Waking Up Proud.
He's more in the golf world, and he said that. It's really changed how they're playing this course and making it 10 times easier to putt. That's incredible. I did not know that they had done that. That's uh That's kind of a wild story.
So Looking at the leaderboard now, it's still Wyndham Clark leading the way. He's at seven under par. In fact Yesterday he opened up with a sixty four. In case you didn't see that. Which Was the second lowest round in U.S.
Open history, only behind Tommy Fleetwood, 63. Back in 2018.
So Wyndham Clark. The water, the wet grass doesn't seem to be affecting him all that much. He's on a roll.
Well, it's supposed to be helping them make it easier.
Well so so it it looks like it is 'cause because at this this club they they rarely ever have people break even even in the PGA. Yeah. Behind him Matt Fitzpatrick. Um He's three under par. Xander Shafley, he's also three under par.
You got Sam Stevens. By the way, Dustin Johnson, I don't know if you've been following him, but good grief. He had a quad bogey on 15 earlier today. I've never heard of that. He was plus eight over his last five holes in that run.
Just brutal. Just terrible. Your team. Your take. Let's get the show going.
Your drive home. Back at it on the drive, right here on WSJS. Where we are joined by Bryson Carvly, who If you're not aware, he... Is a Keynes fan who went viral. Because he essentially gave up his arm to tattoo different.
Kane's things on his arm throughout this playoff run. And I got to start correctly here because you and I haven't chatted face to face since last weekend when the Kanes had not gotten it done just yet. Congratulations, Bryson. How you doing, my friend? Good, man.
Thank you. Thank you for having me on. I'm doing really well. You know, tomorrow is the parade here in Raleigh. Yeah.
I'm excited for that. And, you know, they brought the cup home.
So good news since the last time we've talked.
So take us through this story here that led to you getting. and essentially a sleeve worth of Keynes tattoos. Yeah, yeah, it's finished. It's a half sleeve now. Yeah, show us the product here.
Yeah, it's a little sore still, but uh The cup at the top, there we added the hurricanes logo right under it, and then obviously the stormy and the warning flag. Yeah. I will be out, like I said, tomorrow at the parade.
So I'm trying to protect it from the sun as much as possible. But also, I want to show it off.
So it's a balance that we're trying to do here. But yeah, the background on it is it was game two. They were down two goals in the third period. And I tweeted, you know, if they score two goals to tie the game, I would get a warning flag tattoo. And then they ended up doing that and winning the game.
So, you know, 24 hours after the game was over, I got the warning flag tattoo and posted that on Twitter. And then we go to game three, and then they're down four goals. In the third period, and before that period started, I tweeted: you know, it kind of worked the first time.
So I was like, let's give it another shot here. They score four goals to tie the game. I'll get a stormy, or yeah, I'm sorry, a walking stormy tattoo, excuse me. And They scored like three goals in 39 seconds, and then they scored the fourth, like towards the end of the third period. And I was in awe.
I was completely shocked. Like, I kind of wanted the warning flag. The Strut and Stormy, I could have done without, but I wasn't not going to get it after committing on social media and everybody seeing it. And that post in particular getting like 1.5 million views was like, okay, I have to follow through. Don't want to jinx the hurricanes.
And then lastly, I committed to after that. Stormy tattoo. committed to getting the Stanley Cup if they won the Stanley Cup. And here we are today. I got it done on, I think, Wednesday this week, and it is completed and ready to go.
I love this man. One of the interesting pieces of this story, or there are several interesting pieces of this story, was that. You, the tattoo parlor, the tattoo shop there that you were working with, like you came in and essentially was like, how much? And they were like. It's on the house, right?
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And so I worked with one for the warning flag. That was bad fun in Youngsville. I paid for that one. And then, when the stormy tattoo had to be done, I emailed a couple shops.
I was like, hey, this is my budget. I'm just trying to get a feel for how much this is going to cost. And that's when Cleopatra Inc. and Raleigh reached back out to me and they were like, no budget, just come in. We're going to do it for free.
And then when I was there, I told them about the Stanley Cup bet and they were like, oh, we're going to do that one for free too if they win, because they're KNEX as well. And they were pumped to be part of it. And they actually wanted to do a full sleeve for free. And I committed to the half sleeve, so I was going to stick with the half sleeve. This was very painful, just the half sleeve.
And I appreciate their eagerness, but I was good with the half sleeve. I love that.
So you had an interesting experience where the canes actually got in touch with you. And they brought you out to sound the siren for one of the games. And just walk us through that experience. What was that like? Yeah, that was one of the craziest days of my life.
No.
My wife and I, the Kanes gifted us two tickets in their view bar area, which is like their standing room only. It's a newer section in the 300-level, but it is spectacular. It's got like its own bar area. The views are perfect. You can see the whole ice.
Like, you're not super far from it.
So, a great area. We stood there for the game and then. It was like right before the game started, one of the Hurricanes media Um, employees reached out to me and was like, Hey, how would you like to sound the siren to start a third period? And I was like, I would love to, and I'm going to, but I am extremely nervous for that because I was going after Mike Commodore and Grant Williams of the Charlotte Hornets. Yeah, so I was like, me, like, I don't understand why I'm going, but I, you know, the third period came around and I got it done.
I think I did an all right job. I got an A-grade from Corey Lavalette, you know, who grades all the siren sounders on Twitter. And It was just such a fun time, man. It was a game I'm never going to forget. The Kanes won.
In regards to that series in general, the Kanes won pretty handily. It was just a great time. People handed me beers all night long and just very friendly. Everybody seen the tattoos, wanting to take pictures with it. It was a very fun and memorable time.
Bryson Carbley with us here on WSJS Viral Kanes fan.
So, Sunday night. Keynes in Vegas. They get a couple of goals. Just take us through when they finally Finish it off. Just take us through what the scene looked like where you were at.
Yeah, so I was at the watch party at Lenovo. I was outside. I kind of wanted to be outside. Just. I felt a lot of people there.
And my wife went to the watch party inside.
So I was outside. She was inside. And I was just around, I don't know, I would say 10,000 of my closest Hurricanes friends. And, you know, once that empty netter went in from Ealers, I mean, everybody sensed it. And then.
You get to that 10-second mark, the whole crowd, every single person, is counting down. And then the zeros hit the clock. The Carolina Hurricanes are sailing champions. Beer is flying everywhere in the air. I mean, I was emotional, man.
I really was because it's. I haven't got to see one of my teams, one of my professional sports teams, you know, win a championship.
So it was awesome. You know, the Kanes won in 2006, but I was pretty young at that point in time.
So I don't think I really got to, you know, marinate in it as much. And I wasn't as heavily invested as I was in this one with the tattoos.
So it was awesome. Like I said, I was super emotional. Just happy for the team, happy for the players, happy for Rod Brendan Moore, who was a player in 2006 as a captain and the coach of the team as they won it this year.
So a championship I'm never going to forget.
So set the stage for us. The parade is tomorrow. What's the day going to look like for you? Yeah, so it starts at 11. I've been told by a couple of local news reporters that they're expecting around two hundred thousand people for the parade itself, which could be more.
It's just like a rough estimate at this point.
So my wife and I are going to get there around seven a.m. And hopefully, find a spot. I would hope at that point. But I've seen people on Twitter saying they're getting there at 3, 4, 5 a.m. in the morning, setting up.
We'd like to be in the City Plaza area because that's where they're going to end the parade and then do their speeches and stuff.
So we're going to try to get in that area. But going to be a long, long day tomorrow because there's a lot of local businesses that are doing things after that I want to go to and be part of. And just exciting, man. It's the culmination of a very emotional roller coaster of a season and Stanley Cup playoffs. And it's just going to be just pure joy.
Bryson Carbley with us here on WSJS. Couple more things for you on the way out here, and we appreciate you making a little time for us.
So. In addition to being a super hurricanes fan, you have a Panthers podcast, Panthers on Tap. If you've ever seen at not Dave Canalis on X, that's Bryson. Tell us a little bit about the podcast. Yeah, thank you, man.
So Panthers on Tap is a fan run podcast by myself and two of my buddies Curtis and Ricky. And we've been doing that podcast for, I don't know, roughly five, six years. And, you know, we go on once weekly, usually Wednesdays at 9 p.m. We go live on YouTube and talk about the current happenings of the Panthers during the season. Obviously, there's a lot more to talk about and reviewing game footage and things like that and what had happened.
But We're in a little bit of a break right now just because there isn't much going on at this point. But yeah, we get on there, talk Panthers. People can comment in the chat and we bring it up on the live YouTube and try to answer any questions anybody has. And just something that we love to do because I'm a huge Carolina Hurricanes fan, but I'm also a huge Carolina Panthers fan.
So I just love my local North Carolina sports teams. And I'm Die hard for both.
So the Panthers made a lot of great moves in this free agency. I liked their draft. What's the optimism level for you going into this season after a division last year? Yeah, look, they had eight wins last year, won the NFC South in kind of a backdoor kind of way.
So, I mean, In my opinion, you know, a winning season looks like progress.
So, whether that's nine wins or ten wins, I think that they've positioned themselves very well to do that. With adding, like you mentioned, they add the offensive lines of the draft. They bring in Jalen Phillips, the edge rusher. They bring in Devin Lloyd, the linebacker. Like the defense should take a step forward.
The offense, Jalen Coker, stays healthy. Obviously, Ted Rowe McMillan stays healthy. I feel like should take a step forward. I think the question mark for me with that offense is Brad Idzik, you know, him being the play caller and not having that experience there. What does that look like?
And I'm hoping that it is a continued step forward. But we'll see, man. And they do have that first place schedule. That's going to be a little tougher. But for me, I need to see continued momentum forward and not taking a step back.
So, whether that's nine or ten wins, I think it can be done. And I think the Panthers have positioned themselves very well to do that. What needs to happen for us to get some Panthers tattoos started? What do we need for that? Yeah, a lot of people have asked.
Let's let the Panthers make the playoffs again, and then it's definitely coming out. 100%. I will. off that first playoff game, put something out on social media. Love it.
Bryson Carbly. the viral Kanes tattoo guy joining us here on WSJS. We appreciate the time. I know you got a lot going on today, so we appreciate a little bit of time. Enjoy the parade tomorrow, and we hope to talk to you again sometime soon, maybe in the Panther season.
Awesome. Yeah, thank you very much.
