on the Infiniti Sports Network. Yeah, we got some NFL action tonight. Thursday night football, the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills. We got some college football action heating up tonight. Heating up into the weekend.
We got some matches you probably want to see. Auburn, Oklahoma, Illinois, Indiana. You got Texas Tech and Utah. Man, there's so many other stories as well. What the heck is going on with Arch Manning?
Why is Dabo Sweeney so mad? It's Georgia Tech for real to talk about all things college football. Joining us right now is someone who covers it all. For SI His name is Brian Fisher. Brian, we appreciate the time.
Absolutely. Good to be on with you. No doubt about it. I guess before we dive deep into any of the games and the storylines and the action. I do want to ask you about this change of the transfer portal.
What's the latest on what this new window looks like? What are some of the implications? Educate us.
Well, yeah, you know, I think this is something that's been in the works for quite a few months now. You know, there's been a lot of discussion both amongst the conferences themselves, amongst the NCA, and various committees. And it does seem like this train is barreling towards the tracks of this getting approved in the next couple of weeks in terms of essentially cutting it down from mostly two portal windows for kids to enter the transfer portal down to one. And that would kind of occur right at the beginning of January for about a 10-day period there, right kind of between the quarterfinal games on January 1st and essentially when the coaches convention takes place in early January. And I think this is going to be a much-needed change for a lot of general managers out there, a lot of head coaches.
It brings a little more sanity to what they have normally been experiencing in December, just in terms of the player movement, in terms of signing day, in terms of really this crazy college football calendar. And I think it's something that a lot of people have been pushing for. I think it's going to ultimately make a big change. Change for the players themselves because no longer can they bail in bull games to enter the transfer portal. They're going to experience some big changes as well.
So I think it's going to be a big thing for them moving forward. And so what implications will this have on teams that are actively in the playoff? Yeah, I think that's still kind of a bit of an unknown. And you are seeing some pushback from some teams that you would expect to be in the playoff Ryan Day had some comments about this not being the window. A lot of Big Ten coaches would have preferred really the transfer portal to open after even the spring itself, you know, kind of way after the season.
So, you know, not everybody's truly totally on the same page with this, but I think for most college football teams out there, this is really only going to impact a very, very select few programs, a select few teams themselves, a lot really a select few players that would have any kind of questionable decisions in terms of entering that transfer portal or not. And, you know, keep in mind, even for those teams that do make it to the CFP semifinals or even the final game, they can still put their name in the transfer portal and still play with their teams through January. But you got to keep in mind, there is an academic component that has been brought up before with a lot of people that, hey, you got to get enrolled in school. And so a lot of these kids are going to have to make those decisions to actually get enrolled in school.
So I think that's going to speed up the movement. and and and compact it into a little bit more tighter time frame. But uh ultimately, I think it can align for both the coaching staffs, the the personnel staffs that are that are putting together these rosters and the players themselves to not only make a decision, find your next school and and kind of move on from there uh pretty quickly come January. Brian, you mean to tell me that when it comes to college football and athletics, academics still matters some type of way? You mean to tell me that still matters?
Well, you know, as much as these kids are taking classes online, you know, that is still the name of the game. And I think that's something that did get lost a lot in terms of the player movement that's happened a lot over the last couple of years. How about that? Academics and college football. Brian Fisher is here with us from SI.
When you talk about the playoffs, Man, we expected a little bit more out of Texas. We expected a little bit more, maybe, out of Arch Manning. I'll put it to you this way, Brian.
Somebody called this week. and said, That Arch Manning is only in his current position. Because of his last name. What would you say to that? Listen up football fans, you won't want to miss this.

I think that the funny thing about Arch and all the not only the play on the field, but really all the discussion around him these last couple of years since he enrolled at Texas was the Texas staff, when they saw him in practice, they saw the signs of him being a good quarterback. We saw flashes certainly when he did get that starting opportunity last year in a couple of games when Quinn Hurricane was hurt. There was a lot to build on in terms of, hey, this guy looked the part. You certainly understood from the board work, from the understanding of the offense, like he got it to be the quarterback that everybody kind of hyped him up for. And I don't know if it's kind of the yips this season or whether it's just not translating in terms of the speed of everything that's kind of being thrown at him now that some defenses have really been able to kind of study him and design game plans around him.
But something's not clicking. Certainly they're in the 40 acres for Arch and for Texas' offense. This is still an offense that. Had to replace a lot of offensive line and is breaking in a lot of new weapons.
So, like, this is not quite the same Texas team that we saw make it to the semifinals last year. And I think that is important to keep in mind. The flip side is that I think Arch can still be that guy. You know, he can still live up to the building. Maybe it takes him a while.
You know, his footwork has been really, really off. You know, I think that seeing him warm up for that Ohio State game, like, you know, he was like, you know. You know, from the mechanics, from the footwork to how he threw the ball, his arm strength, you know, he ticked off all those boxes. But, you know, as soon as those stamps kind of started flying at him and, Defense were able to adjust to him. He just has not been the same kind of quarterback that I think even Texas fans and even the Texas coaching staff would point to, you know, what they saw last year.
So he can still get back to that. I'm not as worried about him. You know, I think he will figure things out. I think that Texas staff will figure things out. But the bottom line is he's got to play better.
He knows that. And I think there's a recognition that Texas is going to be better if he can get into that proper state of mind on the football field moving forward. Yeah, there's a bunch of QBs that, whether injury, expectations, they haven't lived up to billing guys like DJ Lagway, Garrett Nussmeyer. Club Nick, and now we got quarter.
Well, their coaches are throwing fits. Dabbo Sweeney is already. Combative about his future. Why? I don't know.
Brian Kelly is lashing out reporters and then apologizing. I mean, it's early in the season. These guys are well established. Why are they so angry so early, Brian? Oh, I wish I knew.
You know, everybody's definitely quite, quite ornery, you know, early in the year right now. And I think a lot of it comes down to understanding that in this 12-team era, guys like Brian Kelly, guys like Dabbo, they are expected to make the playoff. And so whenever you get, you start one and two or you start to even don't even have a perfect performance on the field, you know, there are going to be question marks in terms of, hey, you still got a lot of ranked opponents down the stretch in terms of your schedules. You know, how are you going to get over that hump and still make it into the playoff? You know, Clipson was a great example last year of kind of backing into the playoff.
But I think nowadays fan bases are quite demanding, especially those that, let's face it, have the rosters to be in that mix. There's a reason why a lot of people pick Clipson, not only to just to make the playoff in the preseason, but to get to the title game, maybe even win a national title with what they had coming back. They have not translated that on the field this season. And I think you're starting to see some of that pressure seep in to those football buildings and to those football coaches. That's kind of an understanding of where we're at, not only in terms of the media environment right now in college sports, but also understanding the pressure that these coaches and these players are under, not just to get to the playoff, but to perform kind of at that national title level throughout the season.
Not just one game, but all 13 weeks of the regular season. You you talk about pressure.
Well, Brian Fisher is joining us from SI. I don't know if there's pressure here. I feel like everybody's riding on Cloud9 right now. I'm talking about Georgia Tech. They're like three blocks away from me.
They're carrying goal posts into people's swimming pools and Haynes King is the guy. Do you think Georgia Tech is for real? I do. And I think some of that is down to the schedule that they're going to play. Getting that.
That Clinton win. You know, that was probably their biggest hurdle early in the season. Look, they've got a game against Temple coming up. They're on the road against Wake, which is one of the teams certainly that are trending towards the bottom of the ACC right now. Maybe you could pencil in that trip to Duke kind of mid-year as being potentially tricky.
But let's face it, they're probably going to be favored at least by a touchdown, if not more, in every single ACC game the rest of the way this season. And that's on top of having Georgia right down the road there at Mercedes-Benz.
So this schedule really does shape up well for the Yellow Jackets. And I give Brent Key a lot of credit, the head coach there. He has built a tough and physical and hard-nosed team. And he's got a quarterback in Haynes King that he can build around as well. Listen up, football fans.
