God delivers a wonderful truth of his sovereignty to Samuel, assuring him that he is in control of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Samuel is tasked with anointing the next king of Israel, but God hasn't told him who to choose. Samuel's visit to Bethlehem is not an accident, and he is sent to the ancestral homestead of David's great-grandfather Boaz and great-grandmother Ruth. Samuel is introduced to each of Jesse's sons, but God rejects them all, looking not at their outward appearance but at their hearts. The youngest son, David, is the one God has chosen, but Samuel doesn't understand why and is confused by God's decision.
