During the Great Depression, O.D. and Ruth McKee started selling Virginia Dare cakes from the back of their car, eventually purchasing a bakery and renaming it McKee Baking Company. They introduced the Oatmeal Cream Pie, a continuously sold product, and later sold their bakery, only to return and rename it McKee Foods.
