You've got an overreaction Monday on a Tuesday coming up, if I'm not mistaken. I have it in my hands. I'm ready to go.
Well, we have to pause, hit the pause on that. DJ Mikey Diaz and Deez Nuts sitting right where he is. And looking who's in our guest chair, Burbank's finest, as well as Harvard Westlake's finest, winning a World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers, fresh off the parade. Jack Flaherty, good to see you, sir. How are you? I'm doing great.
I'm doing really, really great. You certainly are, are you not? Yeah, yeah. Is this one of those dreams come true? You were a Dodger fan growing up in Burbank?
I was, I was. I was a Dodger fan growing up and just, yeah, it was a dream come true. I think I'm finally like realizing how cool it was and, and how special it was to like a dream come true, winning a World Series, of course, but then do it in LA, do it for the city I grew up in.
I think it's something everybody, you know, is never talks about, but everybody, everybody dreams of that. So special. Well, did you take a moment before game one? You're stepping on the mound, Glabor Tour is about to step in. The World Series is just about to begin in Dodger Stadium.
The ball's in your hand. Did you, did you just sort of look around Dodger Stadium, look up, do anything at that point in time? You know, I, it was walking in, walking in from the bullpen right after I warmed up. You kind of take it all in and, and honestly, like when I, when I walked out, when I walked out to the, to the bullpen before doing my warmup and everything, and you start getting cheers from the crowd and, and people down the left field line stand up and give you, like already giving you an applause, like you can feel the city, city behind you. But, but then when I, when I come in and, you know, like I'm going to come in and do my little thing before, before going out for the first pitch, you, you take in the moment and you enjoy it and understand how cool this is and how cool, like the opportunity is.
Like I get to throw game one of, of the World Series and not only for the Dodgers, but having, having it be Dodgers Yankees too. Right? Yeah. That is it. It doesn't get bigger than that. It doesn't get bigger than that.
That is, that is for damn sure. And so who was your Dodger growing up when you're sitting there in Burbank and you were rooting for this guy or that guy? Who was that? Like when I was, when I was really young, I feel like I get asked this all the time and I forget being really young. I know I was a fan of, of of Raul Mondessey. Going way back there.
Yeah. When I was really young, my mom always tells me, he's like, she's like, you always wanted to get your, your ears pierced when you were super young because he had them. And I don't know why.
And I see both of them are right now. And then eventually that, that happened. And then you know, Adrian Beltre. And then as I got older, it was, it was Matt Kemp.
Like while I was in middle school and going into high school, that was Matt was the guy. So are you saying you could rake back in the day? Is that what you're saying? Of course. Yeah.
I mean, we would all say it. No, no, no, no, no. Yeah.
Yeah. You know, it was, it was growing up, I was always played shortstop. And then in high school was playing short center in third and and then pitched enough. And you know, and when it came time for draft, when it came time for the draft, they they just, they thought I'd had a better future as a pitcher. So it was at Harvard Westlake where somebody's like, Hey, let's focus more on the pitching.
Is that what you're saying? The pitching coach there always told me to give up hitting. He was like, you're going to be a pitcher. And I always kind of laughed at him. I was like, it's never going to happen. And he was like, just watch, it's going to happen.
He's now the pitching coach with the White Sox. So whenever he's, whenever I see him, he's always like, I told you it was going to happen. And then you start game one of the world series for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yeah. That is so cool. That's what, that's, that's why you, that's why you do this as a kid.
That's why you play the game, man. Yeah. That's awesome. And I, I, you know, and so how was the parade? The parade was, the parade was incredible. Just, I don't think you realized how much, like, I know that the Dodgers mean a lot to the city, but then actually being up there on the bus and seeing how deep it went with people when you looked and then somebody grabs you and tells you look to the other side and be like, it's that deep on the other side too.
I don't think I really imagined that it was going to be like that crazy or that many people or have it be that deep. So yeah, it was, you just riding a high the whole time. Now, I don't mean to put you in a position, Jack, but did I see a moment when you were in Dodger Stadium on the day of the celebration in the parade where you were in a director's chair being interviewed and getting up wasn't an issue for you. Yeah.
Did I see that? It may have been a little bit of a struggle. I may have gone to to try to dap up Oral Hershiser and you know, kind of just whiffed and fell over a little bit and he caught me and gave me a big old hug.
Was this an infused moment? I think there's definitely videos of me holding a bottle of tequila on the on the on the during the parade. Yeah, you know, if you have breakfast, you'd have a base. I had I had breakfast. I ate it was just, you know, it was I enjoyed the parade. I had a great time at the parade and you know that it was it was caught there and I keep seeing different videos and I was like I really was hoping people some people wouldn't see some of them. Hey man, Tom Brady needed to be handheld essentially leaving his and it's and and this wasn't his first championship parade rodeo, sir.
It might have been the first on the water which we also know adds a degree of difficulty to you know imbibing but he had to be he had to be shepherded chaperoned out of his. I think it's very funny being put in the same conversation as Tom Brady under those circumstances at all. I think it might be the only time that ever happens but I still got a lot of career left but that's a yeah yes you do that some of my friends say that and I was like I mean hey you know it was a it was a great time. Did you get texts from people saying hey I saw this? I got plenty of messages and texts and and whatever everything was everybody was like this is incredible and people were like it's it's amazing like I yeah I fell out of the chair pretty much and dude again if I had told you back in high school right that you'd have this experience you'd be in this position you would celebrate the way that you did at the parade okay yeah and Oral Hershiser would be the one to catch you yeah right yeah that was that was something the fact that he he was he got up and and he caught me as I was trying to get up and and whatnot is uh yeah it's pretty cool. Now uh Jack Flaherty here on the Rich Eisen Show and it's interesting how um you know what happened in game one uh that you know um you pitched incredibly well and it was a tight game and we all know how it ended um and you're 29 so this kind of predates your you know pretty much existence on the planet but did you put two and two together this was like a Kirk Gibson type moment I think when when uh Freddy Freeman went yard to win game one people brought it up and people you know mentioned it I you know in the moment absolutely not but you know after the game people are talking about it and like that it was you know one of those things and then you know Joe Davis did an unbelievable job with his call and and uh you know giving uh paying homage to to Vince Scoli so I mean it was it was one of those things that you put side by side like it is I mean that home run that Freddy hit was unbelievable like we all didn't know what to do like obviously like game was over but it was so stressful everybody just hung out on the field normally like walk off great go in but everybody just we all hung out on the field because it was like that was that was incredible what do you mean you didn't know what to do it was it was like that really just happened like we really just we won game one like that at least that's how it felt for me like I was in oh my gosh like oh my goodness state it was just like it did happen so fast like it was you know the Nestor came in threw one pitch to show and you know Verdugo goes over the side and then they walk Mookie and they see you know Freddy's hitting a walk off grand slam and we were winning game one after you know that like it was a back and forth kind of game and uh we just we stayed on the field everybody was was it was just overjoyed and um for me being from here and just like seeing everything I was like this is like this is incredible well as I revealed to you before this uh interview I'm a I'm a Yankee fan so while you didn't know what to do neither did I I was in the I was in this in the stadium with my 13 year old who's you know potentially trying to follow in your footsteps Jack from here in uh in southern California and uh we went out like in a zombie-like state to our car yeah and um so he's also a Yankee fan he is that I got that one going for me Susie over there got the the Patriots and the Celtics okay so it's okay she's she's from New England so you know but our daughter's middle name is Mattingly yeah okay so that's what I'm saying like yeah that's what I'm dealing with over here you've got a lot to deal with yeah but you've you got the championship with the with the Celtics this year and I got that I got years of rings of course thanks to monkey too by the way the king of rings yeah please no kidding yeah he's unbelievable he's incredible right I mean like truly one of the greatest athletes anybody's ever going to come across oh my goodness I in in everything he's the only active player with in baseball with with three rings and then you just add what he can do bowling wise is have you bowled with him you have I have not we we went to his house after um after the parade we went over we went to his house and he's got a whole set up there where he says like he he bowls every day pretty much so okay walk me through this parade's over party at Mookie's house is that what you're saying parade's over I took a nap I went and took a nap I couldn't tell you needed one Jack I couldn't tell you know yeah I uh I went and took a nap and then yeah we went uh we went to Mookie's house he threw a little he threw a you know party for everybody and then we we continued the party and kept kept going so everybody went to Mookie's house uh pretty much everybody went over to Mookie's house how cool is that that was incredible he's got an unbelievable setup guys were guys were bowling trying to you know see what they could do um and Mookie dominated I didn't even I didn't see Mookie bowl that whole time but he was I think he was just you know he was he was playing host a little bit so he was running he was bouncing around running around this is like the coolest thing out yeah he's he's an unbelievable athlete what's Shohei like Shohei is like one of the guys so he's one of the dudes he just he just wants to he he he'll just he sits on the bus he reads his comic books and which comic books I'm not sure they're all in Japanese yeah he just has it on his ipad uh he shows up to the field does his work is as chill as they come um sometimes brings a dog to the stadium uh yeah decoys there for pretty much all the games he just doesn't he's decoys not down in the in the locker room with us but uh show's just he's absolutely one of the guys and uh yeah no kidding huh yeah dude so it's amazing Jack Flaherty here on the Rich Eisen Show that trade deadline the Yankees were coming for you right what happened um and you're willing to share Jack uh look like the trade deadline is a trade deadline you know there's the Yankees were the Yankees were interested Dodgers were interested as far as I know um like my medicals were fine on on on all fronts uh and the deal ended up getting done with the Dodgers um and then I guess I don't know afterwards it was they you know they said that they didn't make the deal because of my medicals and that's that's fine but I know that they were fine on all fronts so the Dodgers made the deal and it ended up working out well sure spoiler alert but did were you told at any point in time pack your bags for New York no no never I was never told anything like that I actually just sat in the in the Tigers locker room and for about like three hours because we played a day game and I lived like a decent amount away from the stadium so I was like I'm not gonna go home like maybe this will happen soon maybe it won't and it it went all the way down to the end so um I just waited I got a um I got a text that it was that it was the Dodgers and um you had to be jacked seeing that though right I was I yeah I was around a couple of guys like had hung out for for Detroit I loved my time there oh yeah I don't mean to denigrate your the way it's great situation there too I mean what they did was incredible right um but but I mean again this is from this is yeah I saw a family around here it was yeah no I got a family around here it was something that I think as a as a kid you hope that you get a chance to do it and I wasn't really sure I was ever going to get that opportunity and to get that to get that message and um you know it's set in when I get in the car and like you know call my mom and she's you know she's crying because she's happy she's you know she's like I don't have to travel anymore I can just come to the games and uh it was it was special but it was so special to get that opportunity and it just seemed to me again I'm just watching from the outside in that Dave Roberts was particularly keen to get whatever criticism there has been for him and the asterisk of the 2000 season which I don't think there is I mean that could not have been easy by any stretch of the imagination performing living traveling anything and that if everybody was working under the same you know construct which you were yeah that's pretty impressive someone's gonna have to win it and they did yeah but it seemed to me that this was on his mind and I know you were kind of surfing into the scene if you will from July on am I accurate I think I mean they've look they've been one of the best teams in baseball for like a very very long time and look at in the playoffs in baseball is one of the hardest things to to do it's not to diminish the other sports but you know it's any given day anything can happen I mean we're down 2-1 to San Diego and could have very easily had our season ended but you know are we throwing nine innings shut out with our our bullpen so for them and what they what they have accomplished in the regular season has been second to none and he has been given so much criticism for the playoffs and everything and but I think what he did this year with with this team and the injuries that happened and to be able to manage the way he did through throughout the playoffs like all credit to doc he was incredible to be around um so supportive of of me and I appreciated it he just like you know he's just excited to see he decided to see everybody every day for me like I always appreciated you know he was he was super excited again you know gave me a big hug after everything was done I got emotional once like everything was done like right after that interview and uh he just you know he he did it and I couldn't be happier for him because he was he truly was amazing what he's able to do managing all the injuries that went on this year you look at the you look at the guys that they had on the IL um and we were still able to win it it was like he deserves a lot of credit I know it wasn't you on the mound but I'm wondering if you you knew what he what did he say to Blake Tron in game five when it where where because in the past you know one of the criticisms for Dave is you know by the book and what the analytics is saying he went out there and he went with what appeared to be his gut and his feel and he just slapped him on the chest yeah like Jim Harbaugh does to his quarterbacks before game you know and kept him in there and he was rewarded what do you know what he said I think I think all he said to him was he just asked he just wanted to know if he still if he had enough to to get Stanton and Blake is Blake's not gonna say no especially in that situation yeah but most pitchers are gonna you know do what he would say 100 but he Blake Blake had a look in his eyes like look I this has been a little bit of a weird inning and it's been a long series but like I'm pretty sure Blake just said I got it and Doc turned around walked off the mound I think I think I had a pretty good feeling that he wasn't going to take him out there um and he didn't and Blake went and got the job done and then Walker came in and uh the rest is history it is indeed so what do you mean you got emotional after the interview the one in Dodger Stadium is what you're talking about yeah the one in Dodger Stadium I sat around afterwards with my fam and uh just like just kind of cried it all out and it was just it was just like I can't believe this happened and you know it was sad it was like it was it was it was happy and then like sad like okay like you know it's over like now it's like now what happens like we want it awesome great now it's like we move on interesting yeah so you have is that what what is next for you uh that's yet to be seen because free agency just began yesterday just began yeah things happen a little slower in baseball it's things don't happen right away it's just well I mean now these days you could be you know waiting till March right April like heaven forbid I know that's not what you want but things things are crazy like that these days you know like the hot stove sometimes takes a while to warm up yeah but uh is it possible you stay here do you think Jack I think anything is possible um I love playing here I love my time here you're 29 yeah I know I think there's there's a thing around baseball I think people think I'm older than I am because I've been you know I came in when I was 21 but right I did just turn 29 so um you know I'm hopeful for good things to to happen over this uh these next couple weeks or months whatever it ends up okay you sure you weren't crying because you're out of tequila um I'm pretty sure because there was always going to be more tequila yeah we can help you out with that yeah I think there was always going to be a little bit more okay that's cool just crying just happy so we're we're were you teammates with freed and gelido were you all together in high school we were all together that was the pitching staff yeah I was a I was a sophomore and they were they were seniors and uh but that was our that was our pitching staff I was just I was just a young sophomore that um it was you'd get gelido on Tuesday and you'd get freed on Friday and you know they went seventh and 16th in the draft so it was a good team it was a damn straight yeah that is so cool I couldn't be happy for you man even though you know um you made me a little bit bummed but you have to be a professional I have to be a pro yeah as well you know but congratulations to you man I appreciate it that is so cool it's like dream come true type stuff it is it really is I mean uh because you you were in a backyard in Burbank calling your action at some point like you know like you're you're dreaming of okay here comes Jack Flaherty to the plate or to the mound like that's the sort of stuff yeah probably the backyard of my mom's house or or woofleball on the street with my friends and it was always with the dodgers so yeah to do with them is is definitely like it's it's a dream come true it's uh it just I mean winning the world series in and of itself is a dream come true but it's a little bit sweeter doing it at home yeah doing it for the dodgers well I mean if you want to stop by on the way home yeah we have a lot of woofleball yeah we got a great field I mean yeah yeah I mean I'm just saying we have we have top shelf tequila don't make it seem like we have lime trees for days I can't like yeah I got a lefty we got a lefty yeah by the way don't make it sound like it's like the field of dreams in our backyard like it sounds like you know no it's it's it's we have a neighbor who lives down the street who collects all the balls and brings them back that's a good neighbor yes because uh yeah because our son just parks them yeah you know but we do hear him like in a high-pitched voice in the backyard like calling his actions exactly the way it goes right you're you're just back there and you're calling your shot and you're you're thinking it's yourself dude congratulations by the way uh a lot of people thought before I let you go a lot of people thought the series was over when freddy freeman hit the home run in game one personally I thought it was over when cube came out of center field before game two when that happened I turned I did turn to uh our son I'm like this isn't going to work out for us today how cool was that that was that was unbelievable and I don't think I think we had heard reports that it was going to happen so we didn't know I I didn't know okay I don't know if anybody else knew but I know the guys were in the dugout and everybody was kind of like oh this is like this is sick like this is unbelievable did you see the manager your manager rapping along with him did you see that because he was yeah yeah every word yeah and then he yeah I saw him at the parade too and his his dance moves with with cube were interesting man you're living in a glass house man based on you know if you're talking about uh parade oh I hate I guess parade equilibrium I love it man you're having you're having the time of adams is either a first time is either on the roster for championship sunday or the super bowl or is a an all-pro this year so let's call it a conditional third with all due respect to devante adams hall of fame talents and his quarterbacks as well and they now get a fifth in that draft from pittsburgh for mike williams who clearly with malachi corley now finally playing interesting with alan lazar going on the ir the jets flip mike williams signed him all that money in the free agency and now i i don't know how much the jets are taking in terms of salary um and the steelers have been hunting for a wide receiver all off season long you know they went and they got my guy roman wilson from michigan in the draft and he's been hurt to the point where it hasn't been a significant addition yet and um and they went for ayuk didn't get him i believe devante adams didn't really go in their direction because russell wilson's not a bff and um and they get mike williams who i who i predicted was going to win the super bowl for the chief so i'm off on that one rich i'm off on that one good for the steelers russ has got pickens and um calvin austin performing very well and now you add mike williams to that mix and naji harris and jaylen warren and fryer muth they're not saying boo that's just in and uh next up for the steelers it'll be russ trying to connect with mike williams out there on the field uh taking on the washington commanders what a great game that is this weekend black and gold here we go okay yeah speaking of the commanders they were also busy rich what do you
