The kick by Barker is good. From the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. A three-run double from Mookie Betts. Touchdown Detroit Lions. Earlier on the show, Ohio State running back, Quinn Sean Judkins. Senior college football writer for The Athletic, Chris Venini. Coming up, Jets beat writer for the New York Post, Brian Costello. And now, filling in for Rich, it's Kirk Morrison.
Our three-year-old on the Rich Eisen Show. As always, man, great to be here on this Football Monday. After an outstanding Sunday slate full of games, we had some winners and losers. But it all brings us to tonight.
And I am so thankful, so thankful. It's only one Monday Night Football game. Not the two Monday Night Football game tango where I have to use multiple devices. And like I was telling Brockman earlier, I'm working on a tablet, my phone, and then you've got Angry Birds the movie on the big screen because the kids, you know what I mean?
Now, I only got to work one device, watch one game, and then let the kids watch what they want to watch. Why don't you put the man cave up though? Didn't you put a couple of TVs? No, no, no, no, no.
Man cave. No, couldn't do it yet. Not yet. Insert your dominance over your kids. Come on. I'm trying to, but Mondays it's like, you know, until they go to bed, it's, you know, one device.
I give them half a day, half a day. But all my focus will be on one game. And I know the focus of our next guests will be on this game as well. Brian Costello, the New York Jets beat writer for the New York Post. I know you've been thinking about this game all week long, Brian, because it's a lot to unpack.
It's one of those trees with a bunch of branches. So let's start. Which branch did we start with first, Brian? We just talked about the Jets and Bills tonight.
How do we start? What are we looking at first when it comes to the Jets? Well, obviously the coach Kirk, right? I mean, it feels like, it feels like I was watching the Bears and Jaguars yesterday in London and going, oh man, I remember when the Jets played there. What was that? A year ago?
Always a week ago. We were in London stadium and it feels like we've lived a season since that game. So yeah, I mean, the obvious one is, you know, Jeff Ulbricht making his coaching debut tonight as the interim head coach, as well as Todd Downing taking over the play calling, which to me is probably more significant football wise. You know, obviously Ulbricht is going to put a stamp on the team. He's got to lead the team.
But in terms of like actually changing the results of what's been happening, I want to see what Downing can do with his offense and can he get the running game going, number one, and can he get Aaron Rodgers looking more like Aaron Rodgers than he's looked the past few weeks? You know, one of the things is you mentioned it, I don't know, what is the culture of the Jets now? Because when you have Robert Salah, who's been there as the head coach over the last, what, three, four seasons, you, he's, he's establishing a culture. Now he goes, he's fired, but yet the culture, does it stay the same? Is it changed? Does the identity change?
What does Jeff Ulbricht now bring to this team that they weren't doing in the first couple of weeks of the season? Yeah, I think the culture doesn't change really, you know, that quickly. Cause I think it's, it's, you know, what Salah established.
And I don't think you can do that midstream really. So to me, it's not about the culture right now. It's really just about the football. And I think, you know, maybe over time, the culture will change, but I don't think you're going to see that right away. I think they're going to stick to what they had and really Ulbricht, you know, was brought here by Salah.
He's kind of, you know, a solid disciples. So I don't really think this is going to be a drastic change in terms of that. I think the drastic change is going to be, is they're looking for things on the football field, especially offensively. What have we seen from Aaron Rogers, whether at practice, in his media sessions, anything he's saying the right things, Brian, but what do we expect from Aaron Rogers now that one of his trusted confidants and Nathaniel Hackett is no longer giving him the plays in his ear? What do we expect from Aaron Rogers and what Todd Downey may bring or something different from what Nathaniel Hackett brought? Yeah, I don't think Rogers can really make a stink because of how bad the offense has looked, right? It's hard to really say, oh no, you got to keep Nathaniel Hackett.
It's been terrible the last couple of weeks and really hasn't been great all season. So I think they, he, I think Rogers knows they have to try something. How long he's going to have patience and it doesn't work.
That's another question. I think, you know, he's going to want to see results pretty quickly here. They've got to get the running game going. The running game has been non-existent. Last week they ran 14 times and they had 57 dropbacks. That is not a recipe to win in the NFL with any quarterback, but especially when your quarterback's 40 years old and your offensive line hasn't really been locking that well to protect him. So teams are blitzing them now. The Broncos and Vikings really brought the blitz heavy. I'm curious to see if the Bills do that this week. So, you know, we'll see, I think the big, the key to this game for the Jets and the key going forward is can they establish the run? We expected big things from Breeze Hall this season and it hasn't really developed.
Uh, Brian Casello, New York Jets beat writer for the New York Post, joining the Rich Eisen Show. Kirk Morrison here filling in for Richmond. They've got backs.
It's not like they don't, they can't utilize them all. Whether it's Braylon Allen, you mentioned already Breeze Hall, like why isn't there, or why hasn't there been a commitment to the run game? Because this offensive line hasn't blocked well.
I've seen Aaron Rogers on the ground far more in a short period of time with the Jets that I see probably his entire career with the Green Bay Packers. Why not lean on the running game a lot more instead of putting this 40-year-old quarterback back, I mean, dropping back as many times as he has this season? Yeah, well, I mean, it hasn't looked good when they have run.
So, I think that's part of it. They, they just haven't, you know, if you watch the, the, you know, the game's back, it's almost every play someone's making a mistake. This guy misses a block. This guy misses a block.
It gets blown up in the backfield. So, I think that's scaring them a little bit. They clearly, you know, last week was ridiculous.
The 14 to 57 ratio is, was crazy. They, they did fall behind 17-nothing in that game, but I always laugh when coaches are like, oh, we had to throw because we were behind. I mean, it's the second quarter. You can still run the ball and get things going. So, you know, we didn't get a lot of answers about that game honestly, Kirk, because of all the coaching changes. So, like the two guys, the two main decision makers from that game were both out of their jobs by, by Tuesday. So, you know, we didn't get a lot of answers for that one, but I do think the running game has looked so bad.
It's been hard to stay committed to it. And I know Rogers has a lot of control at the line of scrimmage too. I don't know how much he's checking in the passes versus runs. You never, like, you know, they give him like three plays and he gets the pick at the line of scrimmage. So, is he, is he checking out of the runs a lot? I, you know, I'm not sure, but I think with Todd Downing, you know, you saw what he did in Tennessee. Obviously he had Derrick Henry there, which you're nuts if you don't run with Derrick Henry.
So, he ran a lot within Tennessee. I do think that's going to be what they're trying to establish now going forward with Albrecht and Downing. So, I do think you're going to see a greater commitment to the run than you have seen the last few weeks. Brian, I know it's the difficult job that you have to do, especially with this New York media, when you only get maybe one or two questions, right? When you're talking with everybody there and you're trying to get answers and there's way more questions that need to be presented because with the expectations that were put on the New York Jets this season, what they did this off season, what they've done in the draft, the guys they've acquired, for this team right now to be sitting here with only, what, two wins right now?
It could be two and four by the end of the night. Like, is this a total failure? Who is really to blame for this? Because we've talked Salah, we've talked Aaron Rodgers, we've talked obviously offensive coordinator.
What does Joe Douglas play in this? Because I feel like he's the guy that no one talks about, but maybe the architect of how this team has been built. So Kirk, you mentioned the New York media and I've been doing this for a while in New York and I have a theory called the bullseye theory, right? There's always a bullseye on someone on the team, right? There's always someone who's the target for the fans and the media. Sometimes it's the quarterback, right? Zach Wilson took a lot of slings and arrows the last few years. Sometimes it's the offensive coordinator. Nate Hackett is now going to be, the last time the Jets had an offensive coordinator last until his third season was 2011. So it's been a while.
Maybe they go through them quick. Sometimes it's the coach and Salah is now gone. And then sometimes it's the GM and the GM sort of skates a little bit during the season because a lot of the focus is on the coach and the quarterback. So I do think if this keeps going south, there's going to be a lot of focus on Joe Douglas, but you heard Woody Johnson the other day.
What did he say? This is the best roster I've had in 25 years as a coach. He thinks Joe Douglas did a good job. He thinks the coaches are screwing it up.
So now they have to fix it. I will say this two and three, like, you know, I've covered a lot of bad seasons with the Jets. There are teams that pull out a two and three and still have a good season and make the playoffs and go somewhere. Like we, you know, for years and years in this division, it felt like the New England Patriots always started two and two, three, two, four at that age. And everyone was like, oh boy, this is it.
They're falling off. And then it was on the Cincinnati or whatever. And they would rattle off 10 games in a row. I don't think the Jets are that caliber of team, but I don't also don't think two and three is the end of the world and they win the night there at first place.
So it's, it's pretty crazy. And, you know, I don't think there's anyone in the AFC, you know, the chiefs of the chiefs, they're winning somehow with, even though they're not playing their best, but everybody else in the AFC is kind of bunched together to me. And I don't see anyone pulling away in this conference right now. So Brian, no one's talking about the defense as well. This is one of the best defenses last season in the NFL this year, kind of been up and down a little bit. This hasn't been the defense that has given us offense to more opportunities and chances to win football games. Where have they, where are they, where have they been lacking at defensively? I think they're lacking in, in plays that kind of win you a football game, like turnovers and scoring. It's hard to say a defense has to score, but defense, like when the offense is struggling, they could use, you know, a pick six, they could use a fumble return for touchdown. Quincy Williams gets a fumble fumble in London and Sam Donald sort of like touches him and he fell down. You know, that would have been a huge play if he could have returned it. They only have two interceptions all season, and those are both by Brandon Echols, who I'm going to guess for your casual fans are not, I don't know who Brandon Echols is.
Right. Ross Gardner doesn't have an interception in two years. He's a great player, but he's got to be taking the ball away.
He had one hit him in the chest in the end zone last week that he dropped. DJ Reed is having a great season. He's not taking the ball away. The next step for this defense is to take the ball away, set the offense up with either with scoring position or to score themselves. And then I think they can be an elite defense. They're, they're still a good defense. They got, they've gotten hit in the running game, you know, week one against the 49ers. They really ran the ball on them a few other times.
They've looked weak against the run, but they've been strong against the pass. You know, and now potentially there's news today with Hassan Reddick hiring Drew Rosenhaus as his agent. Maybe they're going to get Hassan Reddick at some point.
And that would definitely, you know, boost this defense. Yeah. That was my next question, Brian. The news this morning that came out, Adam Schefter reports that Hassan Reddick has hired Drew Rosenhaus as his agent after he fired his previous agents last week from CAA. His agents fired him. They fired him. We're not doing this. CAA holds a different, you know, look when it comes to how we handle negotiations, but this has been a failure from the beginning.
I don't know how the situation kind of comes to a resolution. You can help me out here, Brian, because he was traded to the Jets, expected a contract extension, never got the extension, never showed up. I mean, trust me, if I'm about to make this amount of money, right, at least I'm going to hold in. I'm going to show up. I'm going to have a little hamstring.
I'm going to have a calf injury. I'm going to be there, but for him to not show up and the Jets have held their stance. I don't know how they come to a resolution for him to allow him back into the locker room.
They got to make a play on this one. I'm looking at what's going on in Detroit with obviously Aiden Hutchinson, who's now injured, won't be able to play for the rest of the regular season. Are the Jets fielding trade offers or even is there a market for Hassan Reddick?
Yeah. I don't know if there's a market for him, honestly, with what he's forced. He's forced his way out of Philadelphia. Now he hasn't shown up for the Jets.
You did a trade. Now you'd have to give him a long-term contract. I'm not sure anyone's doing that. With Rosenhaus coming on, I think that's renewed hope that he does show up for the Jets. Drew Rosenhaus would not have taken him on as a client if he didn't think he was going to be able to get a deal done. Drew's too smart. He's too good of an agent. He wouldn't have done that because this will be embarrassing for him if he takes him on and doesn't get something done. Drew must have had conversations behind the scenes with the Jets, with Reddick, that he knows he can get something done. I didn't think anything was going to happen last week, but now with Rosenhaus coming on, I think that's renewed encouragement that the Jets can get him in there and get something done. I don't think the players care. You know this. Players look at it and go, it's his business.
I'm not talking about other people's money. I think he's been a guy, because he was never there, this is weird. They've never known him as a teammate.
So it wasn't like the guy was missing. I think they're going to look at him as like a mid-season acquisition. Like, all right, this guy can come in and help us. Great.
Come on down. So I don't think there'll be any weird feelings with that. That's a great point. Like, just like he was just a regular normal trade. Like when somebody trades for Amari Cooper in the next couple of weeks, he's like, oh, new teammate coming on in.
Brian Costello, New York Jets, be right. One more for you before I let you go. I know this is the last game of week six, but is this a must-win game for the New York Jets? Do they have to win this game?
They slide to two and four. I know you mentioned it earlier that they could still climb out of this two and four, but for team morale, for I think the outlook for the rest of the season, so much riding on one game, I almost feel like this is a must-win for the Jets. Yeah, I wouldn't go so far as must-win, but I do think it's a very, very important game.
And like what you just said, morale. Like if they win this game, I think they're going to be feeling really good. They're obviously going to be good in the standings. They're going to be, they're tied with the bills, but they have the tiebreaker.
So they'll technically be in first pace. After all the changes of last week, they'll feel really good about Jeff Ulbricht. They'll have some momentum, you know, because they go, they go to Pittsburgh next week on Sunday Night Football. So this is, this doesn't get, this doesn't get easier for them. So I do think winning this won't be huge. The storylines, the drama, they never end. They never end.
Like I say, it carries from one week and then we'll see them again in prime time the following week. But I know someone who's going to cover it all. He's Brian Costello. He'll be doing that, man. Brian, I appreciate the time, my man. We'll be checking all your stuff out today as you watch the game and as we get a chance to sit back and watch it all play out in front of us as well. All right, Kirk, thanks for having me.
That's Brian Costello, the New York Jets beat writer for the New York Post right here on the Rich Eisen Show. That was great because I can't wait. Like there's, to me, it's like there's so many unknowns. So that's why I always like the, the analogy of the tree. He got a big tree with all these branches and these branches present a storyline. And you're like, okay, how does this play out?
How does this play out? You know, because we, we can focus on one person, which is Aaron Rogers. We focus on Robert Sala.
We focus on all these different things, but you realize like there's other contributions to why this team has been the way it is. And one branch fail, which was Robert Sala. Is there more branches to fall?
Saw Nathaniel Hackett. That's another branch that has failed, but what happens now? Do the branches get stronger and they continue to, you know, the roots get stronger and this team finds a way to turn it around or just like the fall, the leaves continue to fall to the ground.
So a lot more on that. As we watch tonight, I've never seen a coach, fellas, I've never seen this before. I've seen this before. I've seen coaches keep their emotions to themselves, or they go into a locker room and maybe let it out. I've never seen a coach bark at the fans in a win. We'll discuss that next right here on the Rich Hyges Show.

John Mulaney wrote that with me and John, I, it deserves a lot of credit for Stefan because he wrote so much of the rhythm of that and the, and the specifics of it. And clearly I found it funny because I laughed every time we did it. I don't think we ever did it where I didn't laugh. John will put in different things or he'll tell me as I'm walking out, I'll tell you, I know you're not supposed to laugh at this stuff and break in the middle of a scene, but that's every time.
Yeah. The first time was we had a club promoter named amnesia, burned Bernstein, and it didn't really get anything. And then he goes, amnesia, Bernstein didn't really get anything. And he goes, I'll change it to something else. And then as I was walking out, he goes, oh, I changed him.
He should burn steam to gay Leota. And I started laughing. So the minute I roll out, I'm like, the other one was, uh, sorry. The other one that made me laugh was he said, he'll change a little things. We had a, we had, we had written a, uh, uh, also at the club was, uh, a two year old ultimate fighter, Julie lips Jackson. He's got fists like empanadas and he's addicted to ecstasy. That's what rewrote. And then he wrote, so it was like two year old, uh, two year old, two year old ultimate fighter, Julie lips Jackson. Uh, he's got fence, like he's got fists like empanadas and they turn the cue card and he said, he's my best friend. So when he turns the card, he's my best friend, but I lost it. I was like, John, I'm behind the cue cards. And I can see him in Sandburg up against the wall, just like watching me laughing like dude.
Yeah. Welcome back to the rich eyes and show radio network. I'm sitting at the, uh, rich eyes and show desk furnished by Granger with supplies and solutions for every industry. Granger has the right product for you.
So call click granger.com or just stop by. Let's say I played in national football league for eight seasons, played for six coaches in those eight years. Um, I've played for some head coaches who definitely heard some things from the crowd. Um, but never did I see a coach, you know, look back at the crowd and kind of, you know, give them a little bit, you know, I've never seen the back and forth of a coach in the crowd.
I've always had coaches who say, maintain your composure, worry about us, keep your focus on the field. They don't play with us. They're not in our locker room.
So don't allow the outside, right? That's called outside noise, right? Coaches always say that's the white noise.
You don't care about that. You care about the voices in your own locker room. So for me, when I watch and see the video of you're watching a game between the Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles, and you're like, man, Eagles, they're winning. They win a game that should make everyone happy.
That should make everyone feel excited about what's going on. But yet the head coach decides to answer back to the fans and fight with the fans in a win. I've never seen this before with a coach who was arguing back at the fan. I've seen some coaches, you know, say, Hey, you know, after a loss and fans are, you know, booing and, you know, I've seen coach say, Hey, shove it. You know, I've heard, I've seen that before, but I've never seen the verbal back and forth between a head coach and the fans in the stands. And I get it. I know the Philadelphia fan base can be unruly at times. Always. I mean, wait, they booed Santa Claus.
I get it. So they're well within their right to go ahead and boo a head coach, but in a win, like why am I booing my head coach? You're not supposed to win a certain kind of way. It's Hey, did you win and you move on from it, but to continue to berate the coach, but for the coach to respond, I've never seen that before. Like I could never, could you imagine Bill Belichick doing that? Like just think like, it's just some coaches, like you think Andy Reid is going to turn around and be upset at the fan base, like, because of a win? Like, no.
So why do that? And here's, here's Nick Sirianni after the game, just kind of talking about him going back and forth with the fans. Yeah. We, we, we, we thrive off the crowd when they cheer for us.
That's all I'll say. Like when our crowd cheers for us, we thrive off them, you know? Um, and you know, we hear them when they boo. We don't, we don't necessarily like it. I don't think that's productive for anybody, but, um, you know, when they cheer for us and when, when we got them rolling, you know, we love it. So when you're winning, why are you listening to it? Like we win the game. So he hears it.
We all hear it. Like as fans, because I consider myself a fan at times, you'd be like, you're going to boo, but that's part of the game. That's part of what it is. As long as it doesn't turn to something that goes beyond being a fan, right? Like they always said, there is a line that you do draw when it becomes too personal, I'm against that. But if teams are going to boo, say you stink or run the ball, change quarterbacks, why is he in the game?
That's all fair game. But as a coach, you got to handle your composure, show your composure in that. I don't think that that's where a coach needs to, because I think the players saw that. And if I got my head coach who's fighting with the fans, how am I supposed to react? And now if I do respond to a fan, I saw my coach do it. Why can't I do it? Like, we're all creatures of habit. Your kids follow what you do. So is it okay for my coach to do that?
No, I should be able to do that. But no, no, no. Come on, Nick Sirianni. You got to be better in that situation. Now it's a win.
They move on. I think because of the expectations of this team, not having AJ Brown for a couple of weeks and Devante Smith, seeing those guys come back from injury, the Eagles find a way to win a game. But I think it's also a point of who they beat.
They beat the Cleveland Browns. Yeah, I don't think you get credit for that. And you should get credit for it. But I'm of the notion of, look, it's hard to win games in this league regardless of who you play.
You're going to get everybody's best. Them dudes over there in Cleveland, they're fighting their butts off. I'm watching Miles Garrett, who barely can practice each week, jump over an offensive line to block a punt.
I mean, to block a field goal and create a scoring opportunity for his football team. They're playing hard. They're playing physical.
They're doing everything that they can. But it's just not the results are just not there. The results are not there for the Cleveland Browns.
And so I think maybe the fan base in Philadelphia said, oh, you're supposed to win. You're supposed to beat them. And they're still, no, no, it's winning in this league is hard. You find a way to win.
And if you win, you move on. But when it comes to the Cleveland Browns, this was a playoff team last year. And there's some people that said this will still be a playoff team. Had they not gotten rid of the backup quarterback or the quarterback who brought them to the playoffs last year, which was Joe Flacco. He's not there because the quarterback right now and Deshaun Watson is not playing very well. And for the contract that he received, there's an expectation of the level of play. And if that play is not being met, then maybe you look in a direction of replacing that guy. I don't know if the Browns want to do that, because when you have that kind of investment in a quarterback, the guarantee 230 million dollars that you're going to get from the quarterback, the guarantee 230 million dollars, that's a lot of money, a lot of money.
And sometimes you're forced to continue to play with that quarterback. A lot of people are looking at the head coach, who's coach of the year, two-time coach of the year, by the way, Kevin Stefanski, because some people are calling for maybe is it time to make a change? Do is does Jameis Winston give his team a better opportunity to win football games?
Here's Kevin Stefanski on being asked that question. Yeah, I think it's just important that we continue to do everything we can to play good sound football. I think there were moments of that, obviously, yesterday. I think Deshaun gives us the best chance to win, continues to give us the best chance to win. And we need to play really good offensive football at his position and really at every position to be to be successful on Sunday. Deshaun Watson, by the way, zero touchdowns thrown yesterday, 16 of 23, 168 yards.
That's that's just where they are right now. You expect Deshaun Watson to, let me let me let me back it up. I think we are still envisioning what we expect of Deshaun Watson to kind of come to fruition, right?
I don't think that it's going to be that. I remember I have this conversation with a bunch of my buddies a lot because we always say, look, there was a time when a couple seasons ago, when you talked about the top three quarterbacks in the league, it started with Mahomes and then Deshaun Watson was right behind him. And that's that was fair. We're talking about an MVP candidate, Deshaun Watson. And obviously, obviously the off the field things that have happened and transpired in his life. And now you are expecting to see that same quarterback that we saw with the Houston Texans.
And let's just be honest. I don't know if we're going to see that guy again. We're hoping I think we're all holding out hope very similar to what we're seeing with Aaron Rogers. We're holding out hope that we can still see the quarterback that was in Green Bay with multiple Super Bowls.
And we may not see that guy again. And that's what Cleveland Browns fans are seeing with Deshaun Watson. He's not the spark of the offense. He hasn't been the spark. He hasn't made those game winning type plays. They're relying on the defense a lot more using your running game that, you know, Jerome Ford, the running back, he'll be out for a little bit.
But Deontay Foreman seeing you're going to get Nick Chubb coming back, who's been activated this week. So this is a football team that right now currently is one in five after making the playoffs last year. And they made the playoffs with a less than quarterback. Yes, Joe Flacco, I say less than because he was on his couch for majority of last season and comes in and leads this team to the playoffs. They're not a playoff team and they probably won't make the playoffs at one in five.
I don't know what the stats are, but I'll tell you this is not good on their chances of making the playoffs. So I would ask if you're the Cleveland Browns, do you try to make a change? Because at some point a change will come. You go one in six, one in seven, and you're trying to find wins. I've been in a locker room like that before.
It ain't fun because you're looking around and you're saying, uh-oh, here we go again. Because I don't know if there's a, is there a belief on this team that they can win games right now with the way that things are going at the quarterback position? I don't, you're not blaming Deshaun Watson, but you're also seeing that he's not giving you the best opportunity to win football games, regardless of what the coach is saying. Coach said, hey, he gives us the best opportunity, but man, we all staring at this one in five record. We're all staring at that record and it doesn't look good. Is Jamis Winston the answer?
Not for the full season, but maybe for a game. I don't know what it is, but there's something to be said right now about the Cleveland Browns to a point where the Philadelphia Eagles fans are mad that the Eagles didn't blow them out. That's how bad of a team it is. When the opposing team's fans say, you should have blew them out by even more. I mean, we did. We ain't blowing nobody out.
This is difficult, man. You know, Tom Cable would have yelled at some fans, come on now. Uh, well, I mean, he took care of a coach for doing that. So he had a little altercation with a coach allegedly. Yeah. Allegedly.
And I didn't see anything, but I sure didn't see him again, the rest of the season. Oh man. Fun times.
Fun times, man. Uh, can we just stop it? Can we please stop too, man? Like let's just stop it. When we stop it. Every week people are saying, Oh, Raider fans don't show up. Charger fans and Rams fans. Like, let's just be, let's just stop all the nonsense.
Like these are destination cities. And I knew this back in the month of May, when my brother-in-law shot me a text. It was a text. Hey, October 13th, Raider Steelers, you got anything for me? Brothers of Steelers fan, brother-in-law is a Steelers fan.
So I got so I got that text back in May. He asked you ahead of time, but you got to understand that in the week before you got to understand, though, this is, this is a guy who's, you know, I think he's a, he's a football fan, but you know, kind of a guy who watches from afar, but for some reason, this was the game to go to. And that only told me that if he's thinking that way, Steeler Nation is probably thinking that way. And so now it turned into yesterday at Allegiant Stadium. Let's just call it a home game for the Pittsburgh Steelers. That was a home game for Mike Tomlin and his Steelers. I saw the pictures and it was a little bit different because it's like, wait, but the Steelers wear black uniforms.
Like they kind of blended in. It looks like it was this all, like everyone had black uniforms on, but what stood out was a little bit different when it comes to the Steelers. Why, why does this stand out, TJ? Why does this stand out?
Brockman, when it comes to the Steelers fans, what stands out? It ain't the black jersey. It's this darn yellow terrible towel that's flying around. And that terrible towel was, they was whipping that thing. They almost started a tornado inside of the Allegiant Stadium last night.
But they was over there whipping that thing around. Like they had their own wind tunnel. The Steelers fans came through to a point where Mike Tomlin, head coach, had to acknowledge, had to acknowledge that that was like a home game for them yesterday.
Like they really did. Like that was to a point where he was like, man, he started the press conference after the game said, look, I don't want to take anything away from this, but this is, this was like a home game. Steeler nation came out and they played that way.
But let's just be real. Like a lot of these games are circled on your calendar. If you're a fan base that want to go to Las Vegas, so want to go to Los Angeles to go watch some football game. And the Steelers who went live, they played there last year and they came out, but that was a Monday night. This time you're playing on a Sunday. So some people were able to get out and I believe, is today a holiday?
Cause you never know. Is today a holiday? Yeah. I think it's a holiday. Yeah. I think it depends.
Technically. Do you observe, is it Christopher Columbus, Indigenous People Day? I think, I don't know. It's, it's one of them holidays.
No mail run of the day. I don't think. I don't know what it is. I just know that sometimes some, some people have it all. Some people don't.
Some people, you know, say, you know what, I'm going to take a day. Well, they took a day and I'm talking about the Steelers fans. They came out and it turned into this big giant Steelers conference. They had a conference in Las Vegas this weekend.
A lot of them showed up. So that contributed to their win. And now the Steelers, their record now four and two, they feel comfortable and excited about where they are. How do you feel about that four and two though? They're four and two and they haven't played their best football.
Because of. Because of, they're still trying to like Arthur Smith is trying to find what works best for them. This could be the first time we ever see a two quarterback system in the NFL. Cause at some point you have to see what Russell Wilson does give you, right? And now he's 100% at practice. He had a full practice last week. This is still one of those storylines that's out there because Justin Fields has played okay. Not great, but not bad.
He's played okay. But you're four and two and you think that really like they're a bad series away from beating the Dallas Cowboys while they're at home. I mean, Dak pulls out that last final drive. They could have won that game. Think about the Indianapolis Colts game. They should have won that one as well. They could be undefeated, but they're not.
But yet they haven't played their best football. And I'm interested to see what does Russell Wilson bring? Does he get an opportunity? Cause every week that's what Mike Tomlin has to answer that question. Cause Russell Wilson still wears a C on his chest for captain. He was voted as a captain and I can't see my captain on the sideline, right? My captain needs to be out there playing.
So at what point, when do you allow Russell Wilson to get his opportunity to go out there and play? Is it a competition ongoing for these Pittsburgh Steelers? So yeah, I feel confident that four and two, because they haven't played their best football. I look at the Ravens, they're sitting at four and two. I don't think that they've played their best football either.
That's the crazy part. They're still it's we're six weeks in and we're not even to the trade deadline yet. I'm not saying some teams are going to make some moves to bolster their roster, but until we get into December, I feel like there's still so much to learn about many of these teams. I go through these rosters, right? I go through the standings right now. People are like, oh, this team is, I think we can all agree the Houston Texans, despite their one loss to the Minnesota Vikings are probably going to win their division, right?
Because Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars, their season is pretty much almost done. Will Levis just gives us a meme every single week. Still don't know the Spider-Man meme thing he was doing yesterday. Don't know what that was all about, by the way. He was like shooting webs.
He was shooting webs and they still lost. Will Levis just score and go to the sideline. Start congratulating the other people.
Do something normal. Please. Indianapolis Colts don't know who they are yet. Is it Anthony Richardson's team? They're winning with Joe Flacco.
Like it's interesting. You're trying to develop a quarterback, but here comes the old gunslinger comes in like Scott Bakula on Necessary Roughness. Remember that? That's what I think of when I see Joe Flacco, but Kansas City, they are who they are. But the Chargers, the Broncos, are the Broncos good?
Are they not? Like, you know, they lose and yet they win. They beat up on the Jets, but are the Jets good? Like I'm just looking at the AFC picture as a whole right now. Still with so much left to be told.
What happens when Tua comes back, right? We got information. How many AFC teams would you say are actually good?
Wow. That's a good question. How many AFT teams are good? I think it's like three. Well, if the playoffs started today, people, which they aren't, but your division, I mean, the number one seed would be the Chiefs. The number two seed would be Houston, followed by Baltimore. Buffalo standing right now would be your four division winners. The winner of tonight's game is the winner.
Yeah. The winner of tonight's game is the four seed essentially. And then right behind them would be Steelers, Chargers, and Colts right now. If the playoffs were to start today, we know this will change.
I'm just telling you right now the way it's seen. So I would give those seven teams right now the opportunity. I'd throw the Jets in there as well because you said they could be in first place. Do you think Buffalo or the Jets are any good? Are they going to win a playoff game?
I don't know. See September, Josh Allen will fool you, right? Right. September, Josh Allen will fool you.
You're like, oh, they've got it fixed. And then all of a sudden he comes back down to Pittsburgh, goes into Buffalo or MetLife. That's a close game, right? Pittsburgh has a real good chance to win. Yes.
I agree with that. But what quarterback for Pittsburgh? Because I'm going to say it's Russell Wilson. Yeah. There's this unknown piece about Russell Wilson.
Black and gold. Here we go. There's this unknown piece that if Russell Wilson is inserted, let me just see what it looks like. Can he get the ball to George Pickens? They're definitely not optimizing their pass game.
No, not at all. Do they increase the passing game, right? Do we see more of the passing game? That's the unknown part about the Steelers for me.
And then there's this other unknown about Tua-Tungabailoa because I know what, if he's able to come back, he's got one more week on IR, the Dolphins have to make a decision. Do we have the Mike McDaniel sound or no? Do we have that? We do? Yeah.
Okay. We'll bring it back. We tease it. Cause they have to open up the practice window and then he's eligible to play in week eight, but is he going to play right away?
Seems unlikely. They're not, I mean, poor Tyler Huntley. Let's just be real, man. Some guys are just backup quarterbacks and it's okay. Josh Johnson has made a great career.
You know, he's thrown into a kind of an unwinnable situation. It's that's a bad deal, but I just look at the AFC and I think like, I know Kansas city's good. I know Houston's good. I know Baltimore is good. Everybody else.
You are not a threat to me. Buffalo? Major questions? Major questions about every other team. Buffalo, Pittsburgh, even the Chargers.
Yeah. I would actually take them fourth. So we, we know right now though, let's just Tennessee, Cleveland, New England and Jacksonville. Let's just. Oh, season's over. Season's over. Season's over. No way.
Come on. You got to blow that team out. That's a 10, that's a 10-7 game for all intents and purposes. They're trying to run out the clock and chase Brown break. He fumbles two plays earlier and the Giants really should have got the ball back. That's that's the NFL though.
That's Sunday night in New York. Season is not over. I'm saying New York Giants played a good football game for the most part. That game was gross. It was a, it was a gross game, but it was an ugly game. Like Joe, like Joe Burrow said, like it's an ugly game.
He scored 38 the week before in the lose. Okay. Like who are you? I know Burrow's playing okay. But the ride that he's been on lately, you got to blow out the Giants. Okay. The Raiders, we know they're no good.
Like Cleveland, their toast, New England and Jacksonville, whatever they're playing for next year. All right. Come on Kirk. Be honest. I'm being honest.
Be honest. Still too much football left. Too much football left, but we will give that a, an update. Mike big Daniel updates us on to a tongue of eye law. We wrap up the show right here, Kirk Morrison, filling in for rich on the rich eyes and show.

Last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed. When you see the video of you throw into Tyree. Okay. What do you think of when you see that?
I just smile. I just, I'm just thankful, thankful for David Tyree, man. There's not a better person and a guy who just, you know, who has the worst week of practice in the history of all practices on that Friday and dropped every pass and you know, thought he was going to be the starting receiver and then Tyco, you know, comes back and plays that game. And then sure enough in the game, David Tyree has a touchdown catch and then they beat catch, you know, Rodney Harrison hanging all over him. You know, Bob Poppa given the call saying, you know, he's got a wide open receiver, you know, and I guess that's wide open in the NFL. And, you know, David Tyree, just the will, the desire was there and just catching it off the helmet. Just what a, what unbelievable story.
And, and, you know, never get tired of watching that play. All right. Well, Chris Brockman, my on-air compadre here, what'd you tell him?
Go ahead. Tell him what you say every time. Now that he's here, you can say it to his face.
Go ahead, Chris. Well, usually I say it to Sean O'Hara because Sean is here, but I mean, there were 14 different holdings on that. What do you say to that? When he says holding.
How can you get holdings? They didn't block anybody. Let them run in, you know, I almost get sat by all four players, you know, they kind of just blocked them off me. I think, you know, if the guy's holding me, you know, like a defense player is holding me. I think you're allowed to do whatever you want to the, to the, you know, to the pass rusher at that point, if I'm in the grass, they could just grab them also and pull them off. It's kind of, it's kind of free range at that point.
I agree. Chris, you see holding Eli sees grasping. That's what he sees.
I see the greatest play ever. That's right. Sitting right there. I was there. That's it.
Good. Back here on the Rich Eisen show. Kirk Morrison here filling in for Rich.
Final segment. Just getting caught up on some news. Shane Steichen says that Anthony Richardson could be good to go, or is he good to go? He's good to go this week. He thinks he'll be ready to go.
They planted the, the, he may be, he may not be. We'll see how the work week goes. Barring a setback. He could be available for the, against the game against the Miami Dolphins.
So that's going to be good. I teased the Mike McDaniel sound. I think we do have the Mike McDaniel sound. Talking about maybe a two up return. Here's Mike McDaniel head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
Well, I think they've, they've continued to be positive. There's, there's still information that he's, that he's seeking this week. And as far as timelines go, I know he's not playing this week.
And I do expect to, to see him playing football in 2024. But where that is exactly, we'll let the, let the process continue since we still have time before he even could entertain anything. So we'll, we'll make sure that he's diligent this, this week and, and assess after that. So basically he's saying, look, I'm not the guy to talk to.
You got to talk to the experts. I'm only can they, you know, answer the questions about my quarterback when he's available to me. So they have an opportunity after this week. And I think Tua is supposed to meet with the specialist either this week or early next week about where he fits in this season. Is it right now?
Is it more time? This obviously is a sensitive conversation for a lot, not just the Miami Dolphins for Tua, him, his family, the NFL players association, they're in on this as well. The NFL is on it.
So everybody's monitoring this because of the long-term effects that it can have. I do believe Tua Tungabileo will be back. If he's cleared by doctors to come back, that is Tua's decision.
And I know some people say, well, well, you gotta be able to, to stop him. And no football players, if I'm cleared to go, if a medical expert in that field tells me that I am okay to return, I fully expect Tua Tungabileo to return as a quarterback of the Miami Dolphins, especially the competitor in him as well. I know he wants to go back out there. It's hard watching your teams, watching your team go out there and struggle knowing that they're so much better when you're out there on the field.
So understand that, I get that as well. So we'll see, give the time. It'll kind of play itself out, but that could change the AFC East too, guys. That could change the way the AFC East plays out because now you have to enter the Miami Dolphins back in that conversation. Could be a thorn in the side of the New York Jets, of the Buffalo Bills. Not saying they could win a division right away, but they have a much better opportunity with Tua Tungabileo at the quarterback spot.
So look at that. Who wins tonight, by the way, Buffalo or the Jets? I gotta go with Bills.
Do you want Bills? I'm going Bills. What about you, TJ?
I know, I know. It's a tough one. I low key think this is going to be a better game than we're giving it credit for, for some reason, but I think Buffalo is taking the W. They got the best player in the game, so I gotta ride with that.
I'm going to ride with the Jets tonight. Word? I do. Okay. And the reason why I think is because.
Please sell me on this. This is why. Because everybody else is telling you why you won't win tonight. You've had a week to stew over this.
I can tell you this, that plane ride back from London was no fun. There was no fun last week. And I always say the fight of a player to hear all week about the coaching change, about the team is not good. That stuff sits on you and you can't wait to go out and attack another Jersey, another color, another team, the team will cross from you. And so I think that's why the Jets will find a way to win because so many people are, I won't say against you, but they have been talking that your season is about to be over and they're playing for their season.
And so I think tonight we'll see a much different tail, much looser team as well. Cause right now you're also saying, look, this starts our new season and Jeff Olbrich, I'll tell you this, I've competed against Brick for a long time, man. Brick is a good coach. We don't want him to be a linebacker brethren. He will have those guys ready to play. He will have those guys motivated to play. And I think maybe where the Jets messed up was having that relationship between offensive coordinator, quarterback, the Nathaniel Hackett thing.
It was a thing, right? Everybody knew that this was Aaron Rogers guy. This to me tells me, look, we are taking it. This is a new way of doing things for the rest of the season. Everybody all in let's go make a play.
Let's just go win a football game. And I think Brick may be a little more aggressive knowing, dude, I'm not going to be the head coach next year. I'm just here coaching for the rest of the season.
I'm an interim. And I think today we'll see him kind of give this team a little added juice. I'm saying they went a close one. They won't run away with it, but they're playing at home. They've got the home fans behind you. I'm going to go with the Jets in this one.
I think the conversation will be more about Buffalo at the end of this game than it is about the New York Jets. I promise you. And I stand on business. Yeah. You don't, you don't, you don't make picks.
He doesn't pay attention at the time. So that's, are you going to watch tonight? Do you know who's playing? I stay away from football after Sunday. Are you going to watch the Yankees tonight? I'll watch the Yankees. I'm a baseball guy. I know Dodgers and Mets was, uh, was, was bad yesterday.
That's game two in like an hour. Yeah. All right, man. Thank you for coming in.
