Prices vary based on how you buy. This is the Rich Eisen Show. Here's the other surprising part with guest host Kirk Morrison to win the game. The kick is off the kick by Barker is good from the Rich Eisen Show Studio in Los Angeles. A three run double from Mookie Betts. Touchdown Detroit Lions. Today's guest, Ohio State running back Quinshan Judkins, senior college football writer for The Athletic, Chris Bonini, Jets beat writer for The New York Post, Brian Costello. And now filling in for Rich, it's Kirk Morrison.
Oh, because I had to work it up, work it up a little bit, man. Hi, everybody. This Monday, we start October 14th, 2024 worse than here. Fill it in for Rich. Always great to be with the guys as always.
Brockdale twofold. TJ, thank you guys for having me as always. Appreciate it.
Appreciate it so much. I mean, so much. It is so much to get to today on this Monday of a sports weekend. I mean, from the college football.
Can't wait to talk about that. I was out on the college football scene this weekend. Had a game. You know, we'll talk about that one a little bit, but just the big games throughout college football.
There still is a Red River showdown. We got some antics after that one. We could talk some highs, we could talk some MVP in the National Football League. We got the WNBA finals going on. We got the NLDS that's going on.
Today starts the ALDS. Well, we in championships here. We in the CS's now. Okay. Make sure I get all my acronyms correct. Just so much to get to.
I started it off this way as well. Lamar and Derek, is there a better combo? Name a better combo. Jordan Love is back.
Drake Malis or Drake Mays? I don't know. We'll talk a little bit about that game.
Blackey Maia. Baker's Revenge down in Tampa Bay going down to New Orleans. So, we'll talk a little bit about that. Sirianni's Rage.
These are Kirk's headlines, by the way. Sirianni's Rage. I got bars.
I got bars early on. 16 for everybody. Joe Flacco keeps flacking.
You like that one? Flacking on Flacco. I mean, Colts get another win. This is not necessarily a headline, but Steelers win an extra home game. Extra home game.
We'll talk about that. The Steelers beat the Raiders. Kirk Cousins, can we still keep giving them props? I know they beat the Panthers, but still, it's still a win. A win is a win.
That's what I say. I would have taken the win yesterday. Joe Cool. Joe Cool.
Joe Burrow. A win is a win, man. I don't care how you get a win.
I don't care how you get a win. It was really, really ugly last night. I think the Chargers didn't charge yesterday. How many times have we seen the Chargers go up 10 late in the football game and find a way to charge it away? Weekly?
Yeah, that's usually what happens. So, I have all of these storylines to get to in the National Football League, but there's one place I do want to start. Of course. The one I saved for last, everybody. The one I saved for last. The Dallas Cowboys. How about them Cowboys? On what was... Oh, there we go. I'm paying off a bet, Kirk. Shout out to our boy, Jeff in Detroit. That's the Lions logo, the Loewy Lions slogan for the years. It takes more. So, I gave him that. And every week, I'll put another day, just to make up for that. Every day this week, I'm going to pay this bet off to Jeff with something about Lions related, because they deserved it.
Because they stomped the mud hole in us and didn't walk it dry. Similar to the SEC, it means more. It takes more, right? I like that. Is that a play on that? I guess.
I looked it up. That's what their slogan is for the season. I mean, let's just start there. Jerry Jones' birthday. Happy 82nd birthday yesterday to Jerry Jones. And what was supposed to be a game that got everybody back onto the bandwagon, right? The back onto the train of the Dallas Cowboys. After beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh, everybody's feeling comfortable. We're good. We're back on track. We beat the Steelers.
We got the Detroit line. We want to make a statement. Sunday was a statement by the Cowboys.
Just the wrong statement. When you get beat 47 to six, nine, I'm sorry. I gave them 47 to nine. I'm sorry. They didn't get to double digits. I'm sorry. I mean, when you look at it quickly, you look like you almost flipped a nine upside down.
It could have been six. I'm just giving it to you right now. The Dallas Cowboys didn't win the football game. And I know we can start with the Cowboys first, but let's switch it over to Detroit because I want to give them their props.
They need it. They deserve props in how they've played. This is a football team right now. The Detroit Lions, arguably we can discuss, are they not the best team in the NFL right now?
Right? Like right now we're six weeks into this thing. Are they not the best foot? Do you tell me a team that right now is better than they are right now? Even though they have a team in their own division who's undefeated, what Detroit can present? Or is it just that we saw them dismantle the Cowboys and we're like, uh, that's different. They're much better than we expected.
What is it? Is it Detroit? Is it more about, excuse me, more about Detroit or more about the Dallas Cowboys are not who we thought they were. That's what I'm trying to figure out.
I think it's both for sure. I'm also just curious, TJ, you've been talking about this a lot. Like, who did we think Dallas was, I guess, this season? But they were a really good team. Look, this is a team that's won 12 games.
Yeah. Three years in a row. They've been really, really good under Mike McCarthy. Dak is really good.
CeeDee Lamb is really good. Got really good players on defense for some reason or other, just can't do in the playoffs. And for some reason, also really good home team traditionally in the last few years. Terrible at home this season. But for me, this says more about Detroit.
I know you're out a couple of defenders, but that's not gonna, maybe it's 27 to nine. If Micah Parsons and Dexter Lawrence play not 47 more on the offensive side of the ball, like scoring nine points is just, it's inexcusable at home. And I think Detroit's the best team in the NFL right now. And it's okay to say that.
And I think it's okay to say that. I think we need, we need to be talking about Jared Goff for MVP, talk about Jamison Williams. Jamison Williams, my God, like this was the breakout we were kind of hoping for, for this kid in the off season. Not to mention, oh, Samuel Porta finally gets involved. That probably helped people out fantasy wise, but the run game is awesome.
David Montgomery, we talked to him last week. He scores a touchdown in every single game. And he got paid this weekend. And if you thought maybe he'd be lax, he got his money.
Oh no. He went out there like he was still trying to get that contract. And doing Disney celebrations after scoring.
I like Detroit as number one for power rankings. If people are going to do that this week, no, no argument whatsoever. And the thing is Kirk and Chris and Mike, they're pulling out these plays that you would think that they would try to save for the playoffs, right? It's like, they've got a whole thick playbook of gadgets and tomfoolery.
I haven't seen this many tricks gathered in one place since HBO used to do that show about the ranch tricks all over the place. You know, like what is happening? Like this team is great. They can run the ball.
They can throw the ball. The only downside is of course, what happened to their best defensive player, a guy who we all love on this show down there as a cowboy fan, seeing Aiden go down and hurt more than, than I don't even think it's as a cowboy fan. I think as an NFL fan seeing Aiden Hutchinson go down, you know, trying to, and got the sack on the play by the way, but goes down and, and, and appearing leg injury, a tibia, broken tibia, that's reported by the Detroit lions. He had successful surgery.
They don't have a timeline on his return for Aiden Hutchinson, but the one thing I did hear, and this is if the Detroit lions make it to a Superbowl, there's a possibility that he could be back for that Superbowl. That was reported. That's all thrown out there that that's, Oh yeah.
A long ways away. I mean, trust me, I was up this morning typing in tibia recovery, right? Monday morning, like MD. That's, that's what I was doing. You ever do that? You go tibia recovery.
What is that? And from what it says, it says to say between a four to six, sometimes eight month recovery. I look at where we are now, October, you get him into the middle of January early February. Yeah.
I mean, it's a possibility. I mean, I saw Tio come back from what I thought was the worst injury I'd ever seen and was the best player in a Superbowl by the way. So I will, you know, holding out hope for one of the best defensive player that was on, I would say putting his name in the hat for sure for defensive player of the year this year, but that's the Detroit side of it. Let's get to the Dallas Cowboys side of it.
I tried to wait as long as I could. Just to show how dominant he is. He has seven and a half sacks on his own. The entire Detroit defense has seven and a half sacks losing him. It's going to be interesting what it does to this, this defense, because they are tailor made to win the Superbowl, right? Yeah.
They're tailor made to win a Superbowl. There's and this is the way the NFL works too. And it's crazy that this things like this, it's unfortunate circumstances for Detroit lines and Aiden Hutchinson, right? But just Hassan Redick woke up this morning and has so much value that he did have about three weeks ago, a month ago, two months ago, right? Hassan Redick's been holding out from the New York Jets since he was traded over from the Philadelphia Eagles.
He had no value. Nobody needed a pass rusher, a elite pass rusher. And all of a sudden this morning, I hear the reports he signed with Drew Rosenhouse as his agent. They've already been in contact with teams. No way, really? Oh yeah. Of course he did. What a genius move. Oh, you should have reported this this morning. A genius move. Think about it.
And how quickly did it all come together? I can tell you this, if I'm Hassan Redick, and this is where my history in the NFL and being a player, you never want to see bad things happen to good people. But unfortunately, the business of the NFL is it keeps on moving. And Hassan Redick sees someone's misfortune is like, I need an agent because guess what? I've got value that I didn't have last week, because if you're the Detroit Lions, you're saying we need an elite pass rusher to try to give us something that Aiden Hutchinson gave us in the little bit of time that he had this season.
So I'm just going with that. Now to the Dallas Cowboys. And I don't want to go into this whole rant about the Cowboys this, the Cowboys that. My whole thing is that they're a team that we still don't know who they are and it's OK. They're not a Super Bowl contending team. Let's just be honest. Have we put them on the pedestal because they're the Cowboys?
Absolutely. That's why we're talking about him now. More importantly, we're talking about him now because they got embarrassed.
Embarrassed. It's one thing to lose a tough game. I keep telling people like, oh, it was a tough loss. A tough loss means that you actually had the opportunity to win. This was not a tough loss. This was an embarrassing loss. This was a demoralizing loss, especially when you have an owner who's trying to celebrate his birthday, have all his boys, his partners, right?
His friends, his homeboy, everybody come on out. And you lose like that. Here's Jerry Jones post game of the embarrassing loss to the Lions. This was very concerning and it was very humbling and it was very. I felt bad because of all of our great fans and especially the ones in this stadium.
And certainly the ones that are all about the Cowboys. So we've got a lot of work to do. We I'm glad we've got this bye week coming up here.
It'll give everybody an opportunity to get out and actually practice, practice what it is that takes you to be more successful than a game like this. This was a shocker. I thought we would do a lot of things better than that football game and I think we can.
We just didn't do them out there today. You almost want to pass my man a tissue, right? Jerry Jones looked like he needed a tissue there. That's how emotional this thing is.
Think about the passion that you put into it. And sometimes you have to make decisions and maybe if that was Woody Johnson, Mike McCarthy probably would have been fired already, right? He would have been fired already. But that's a decision that Jerry Jones is going to have to make. Where's his football team at going into their bye week? He's got to make a decision on the head coach. I don't know if he's thinking about it, but we're thinking about it. We're going to talk about it.
But here's Jerry Jones, possibly, you know, maybe does he make a decision on his head coach during a bye week? I haven't even considered that. I'm not considering that, just so you're clear. I'm not considering that. I wouldn't be a hypothetical in that matter. Do you think I'm an idiot?
Do you? Okay, well, I'm not going to hypothetical with you about when I'd consider coaching change in light of the timing we're sitting here with. I'm not at all. I'm not.
And he's not an idiot too. May let you know that. And that's the problem. That's the problem.
Considering it is a problem. But yeah, we know in a lame duck year, right? We knew that if the Cowboys didn't have success, obviously they're going to be switching head coaches or you just don't retain the coach. You don't necessarily fire him, right? If a coach doesn't have a year, he's just not coming back.
He's not technically fired. It's just, we didn't renew the contract, but there's a lot of questions over the next couple of days. Bye weeks present opportunities for change. That's the one thing when I talk to head coaches, whether college or NFL, what did you get done during the bye week?
And they always give me the coach talk. We got back to fundamentals Kirk. We got back to technique. We got back to self scout and see who we are as a football team, where we're good at. And I'm like, if I'm asking the Dallas Cowboys that I ask you guys this, what are they good at?
What if you, if I asked you right now, what do you hang your hat on right now? If you're the Dallas Cowboys, they don't have a good running game. Zeke ain't Zeke. Dowdle sounds like a kid's game that you play growing up.
Growing up, right? Dak Prescott has been good and bad, but the pressure of a $60 million contract does get to you. I think we see more cutaways of CeeDee Lamb than we see receptions during a game.
The offensive line is not necessarily the same. And then Mike Zimmer feels like after week one, I wanted to give him the assistant coach of the year award, right? Remember against the, the, the, uh, the Browns.
I'm like, Oh, give him the award. And then you realize the Brown stink. Like it just takes you a couple more weeks to let it all play out. Realize the Brown stink and has the NFL game from Mike Zimmer passed him by. This isn't the nineties Cowboys anymore. Mike Zimmer, uh, they do things a little bit differently. That's where I'm at with the Cowboys. So if I'm Jerry Jones, he's not pondering a decision, but why not? What are the Dallas Cowboys good at today?
What can you hang your hat? What do I go in the locker room and say, you know what fellas? I know what, what are, what are the Cowboys good at TJ? Mr. Jefferson, we are tremendously excellent at what perhaps the best in the world at kicking the oblong shaped football made of pigs. Oh, Brandon Aubrey came once said we are tremendous. Brandon Aubrey at least gives me hope for that.
I have them on my fantasy team is one of the few bonuses. So we're really good at that. I have been punning. We're good at, yeah. Other than that, Chris, I don't, I'll leave you with this one because I don't want to keep my, my guy, Quinn, Sean, Junkins, uh, waiting any mo any longer, the running back of the Ohio state coming up there.
I don't want him to be waiting. He's over in the green room right now, but I know one thing that the Cowboys are actually good at podcasts. They're great at podcasting. They're great at quotes. They're great at interviews. They're great with the cameras in front of them.
When you ask them about football, but when you're actually playing football, so that's one thing the Cowboys can be good at. They are content creators. They are influencers. Like I said, Jerry Jones, the human Geppetto, he always keeps everybody on the street together. They are influencers.
They are podcasters right now. They're just not a good football team. Not a good football. They're not a good football.
Worth a lot of money for what that's worth. You know, I'm just saying right now, I, and I know it's tough to look across and I know they lost yesterday, the Washington commanders, and we'll get to that game because I'm still looking for you guys to tell me name a better duo, Lamar and Derek like quarterback running back. That's what I'm just throwing. I'm letting that marinate closer.
I'm letting that marinate because we can go a lot of different branches on that tree. Closers, Posada and Rivera. I'm just saying, give me the best duos.
Even in NFL, Major League Baseball. Salt and Pepa. You know what I mean? I'm going to let you marinate on those.
All right. I got to get out of here, man. Quinshaun Jenkins, the running back for the Ohio state joins us. A tough loss this week versus Oregon. He's going to join us next.
The running back of the Ohio state. Quinshaun junk has come right here on the rich eyes and show nice and smooth. That's OReillyAuto.com E-I-S-E-N O-O-O-Reilly Auto Parts. This is a letter written in March of 1998. Two Colts owner, Jim Irsay, who at the time a month away in the draft, the decision between you and Peyton Manning. Right.
It's from Hunter S. Thompson. Oh, dear James. Dear James. Dear James, in response to your addled request for a quick 30 million dollar loan to secure the services of the Manning kid, I have to say no at this time. But the leaf boy is another matter.
He looks strong and Manning doesn't, or at least not strong enough to handle that welcome to the NFL business for two years without a world-class offensive line. How are you fixed at left OT for the next few years, James? Think about it.
You don't want a China doll back there when that freak sap comes crashing in. OK, let me know if you need some money for leaf. I expect to be very rich when this depth movie comes out. Your faithful consultant, Hunter, and it's signed HST. The absurdity of the fact that a Hunter S. Thompson knew who I was and be that he was he was trying to persuade Mr. Irsay to draft me instead was just comical and not to see it for 20 years. How does it?
It just it's just nowhere to be found to be found. Right. I called John Walsh of ESPN. It's a thousand percent real. Wow. And Hunter S. Thompson was a huge NFL fan and obviously an opinion on the 1998 draft.
Well, I think now that we know that a lot of people had an opinion on the 1998 NFL draft. This is amazing. I love that line is that you don't want a China doll back there when that freak sap comes crashing in. The irony of all this, the irony of this, he would go on and play, start the most consecutive games of anybody. And I would be injured going into year two and missed the entire season. So we're just just reminding people strong, underlined, strong. Welcome back here to Rich Isaac Show. Kirk Morrison here filling in for rich. And man, we're joined now by the running back of the Ohio State.
I know Rich doesn't want to hear that, but the Ohio State running back, Quinn, Sean, Jenkins, fresh off the big game, Oregon, Ohio State. I know you're joining us on behalf of Icy Hot, but you got to tell me just how that game, everything about it. I know you played in some venues throughout your prior career. I mean, your prior stop in the SEC at Ole Miss, but just tell me how Alton Stadium was Saturday night, man, the big game, Ohio State, Oregon. Yeah. Definitely a super exciting game. Both teams competed and fought until the end and it just came down to the last play and we weren't able to come out with the win. And just that stadium in Eugene, it wasn't a huge stadium, but it was definitely packed and all our fans traveled from Ohio and their fans were there.
So definitely a super electric game. Yeah. What did you guys learn from, what did coach Ryan Day talk to you guys about after the game in such a tough, close loss, 1.3231? You know, just putting such an emphasis on the things that we previously said before the games and making it like much a bigger statement now to the guys and just trying to keep the team, keep those guys in it mentally to where they know like we're still in this and we can still go win out and still achieve the thing that we set out to achieve and still accomplish the thing that we said we want to do as a team. So just making sure everyone knows that and really just continuing to fight.
Yeah. I could see the fight all the way down to the last final drive. And look, I know you have that opportunity to win a football game, but you're out there on the field, you're watching as well.
Your quarterback, Will Howard, everything is going down. Just take me through that final minute. Just kind of what's going through your mind as you guys are driving down and just ran out of time.
Yeah. So I had just went that previous drive and then we got the ball back on that last drive of the game. And that's when Will, we drove down the field, Will threw the ball to JJ, but he ended up getting the offensive pass interference.
So you would think typically if that offensive pass interference didn't come, we would probably kick a field goal. But so when that interference in that flag, we were backed up. And on that last play, I just remember Will going up the middle and then we were out of time. So, you know, definitely, you know, we wanted to win that game so bad.
And you could tell by the looks of everyone's face. And when you go in the locker room at the end of that game and see how disappointed everyone was and how frustrated everyone was just not coming out on top like we set out to. So everybody, I think everyone on the team, we learned something and just we're going to take advantage of this bye week to go out and improve for the rest of our schedule. Yeah, the rest of the schedule indeed. And you guys roll into a bye week, Quinn-Shawn Jenkins, running back Ohio State, joining the Rich Eisen Show, Kirk Morrison here filling in for Rich. So now it is that time you get a week off. It's been a, you know, I wouldn't say a tough beginning because you guys started off hot. One loss doesn't determine your season. But now how do you gear up for this next part of the season, this next half of the season that's really going to determine everything? And it starts with your bye week. What is that preparation for you on the body? Because I know this, Quinn-Shawn, I'm going to be honest with you.
We know once the season starts to turn, when it starts to get into that late October, early November, Ohio State likes to run the rock, man. What are you doing to help the body get prepared for that moment? Yeah, man, I think just really taking my recovery super serious. As you can see, I got ICI here, you know, super excited to be partnering with those guys. This product has been such a help in my recovery process and just implementing in different ways, doing it every day after practice. And it's helped me so much at the games and the effects it has on my body and how essential it is for me being able to use this on the go and take it with me as well. It's been such a big help.
So super happy to be partnering with those guys and excited to be using this product. I mean, tell me about your recovery process, because it's a two-headed monster with you and Trevion Henderson. You guys are going to get a bulk of the carries throughout the rest of the season.
So I know you want to be fresh. So how does a typical Quinn-Shawn Junkins week work? Is it a little light as the week starts and then you kind of load up and then you kind of taper off as the game approaches? What is that recovery process for you? Yeah, so with our schedule, we typically, you know, do a lift after the day after our game.
And that's when I'll try to come in and get as much treatment as possible and do some recovery. And I see how it helps me as well. And this has helped me so much because I can use this at home.
I don't have to go anywhere and do this. And if I want to take it to the facility and use it after practice, I can just put it in my bag and go. So it's been super helpful for me. But as far as my treatment, I do my basic treatment facility and do things like this at home. So it's been such a help for me and just staying consistent with it. And the way I see how it has helped me as far as the cooling and the contrast and the way it relaxes my muscles. I really love it.
So just using it consistently has been a big part for me. Look, you've played in the SEC, right? Some people say that the best conference in college football, you've only been in the Big Ten for a short period of time. Can you tell me the difference?
What's the difference between the two? Yeah. So Big Ten is definitely, I would say a faster paced conference. The players up here are a little bit faster, but you know, it's just the players aren't as big as they were in the SEC. You know what I'm saying?
But definitely a little bit more technique and a little bit more sound, I would say, and just faster play because they're smaller. But I would say just not as big as the SEC, you know? Yeah, I got you. I know you've learned a lot in your first what's only a third season in college football. You've had all the awards, been back to back all SEC. Now you take it over to the Big Ten.
And so you understand how to recover. You understand the ups and downs of college football. But when you sit back and you watch a true freshman like Jeremiah Smith, man, just how do you help him? Where is he at in terms of receivers in college football?
And also do you got him on the recovery? I see how playing as well. I actually, I try to get a lot of my guys on it.
I tried to tell trivia. I was like, bro, I'm telling you, this is it. But I think with Jeremiah and also James Peeples, a lot of different freshmen we have that are super talented and are on our team and just keeping those guys encouraged and, you know, you know, to continue to push and motivate those guys, even with the ups and downs they have, you know, leading up to this point, just trying to continue to motivate those guys and show them the right thing to do by leading by example. And, and I think the other leaders in our room do a great job at that and just showing them, you know, how to be consistent and different things like that. So, but with those players, I think they really grown so much and, you know, super talented. So that's awesome to see.
It's already been passed and done already. You enter the transfer portal, you go to Ohio State. Has anything surprised you about being a Buckeye and seeing all the attention that you get, the fan base? I mean, after a game, I know everybody has something to say, but how has it been being a Buckeye so far? I think, you know, when you transfer to a school like Ohio State, you know what it is coming into it. You know what to expect before you come here, everyone tells you, everyone informs you, even the coaches. So it's not like you're walking into any situation blind, but I think it's been a one of a kind experience for me, for sure. Especially being from Alabama, coming so far away from home all the way to the Midwest.
It's been such a great experience and just to get to meet so many different people outside of football and, and develop so many great relationships has been such a great journey. So I know you're going to have the icy hot ready all week long recovering. You get that week off and then week nine, Nebraska coming into the big house, man. I can't wait to see you guys rebound. Can't wait to watch you run the ball the rest of the week.
And look, I'm filling in for Rich. So he was just wants to talk about the big game later on in the year. I know what that means. You know what Michigan, Ohio State means. I know you've been there for a short time, but what about Michigan, Ohio State? You got any thoughts on that one later on in the year?
Yeah. Like I said, man, everybody, and some that I think coach day has done a really good job as continuing to preach to the players on our team is that we're going to take this one step at a time and look at each game as that particular game and not look too far down the road and be where our feet are. And I think we've done such a great job at that and just continue to try to push and prepare for the game that week and not focus on anything down the road. So I think when that time comes, everyone will already have that feeling and they know what it is leading up to that point.
So there won't have to be anything said. Well, I don't want to keep you any longer, Quinshaun. This is your bio week. Go ahead and get your icy hot lineup of products together. Get ready for the recovery.
And we'll see you in a couple of weeks versus Nebraska. How about that? Yes, sir. Thank you, God.
Sounds good. That's the Ohio State running back, Quinshaun Junkins right here on the Rich Eyes and show. Quinshaun Junkins and the one thing I would talk about with him is that he came to the SEC and we came from the SEC to the Big Ten. I almost wanted to stop him there. I'm like, come on, man. They faster like we know the Big Ten ain't faster.
But then like, I would say this, there are a lot of people who were against realignment. Me. I'm not one of them love college football. College football is amazing. I have an amazing job.
I'm not gonna lie to you. Each week being able to go and see the different, you know, universities, the pageantry list. Last last weekend was my first time going to the bounce house. I had went to to Orlando to UCF, Cincinnati, UCF. Amazing place. Had no idea UCF and the bounce house.
Just the energy that goes along with it. But I love this college football season because I know I don't want to put your business out there. Brock, I'm gonna put it out there. You missed out on the opportunity on Saturday. You could. The game that we can only see at the Rose Bowl would have been Penn State and USC. But to see that one on Saturday in the Coliseum, it's like those are the matchups of why college football is so much better than, you know, we're getting more. I don't want to bring up an old, you know, old wound and all that.
What does it take the bandaid off old wound or put salt on it? Yes. Sorry about that. Because it was an outstanding game. And this is what I keep talking about when I'm watching college football is I'm getting matchups I never would have gotten before.
True. I'm looking, trust me, I'm looking at these airports when I fly out on Thursday or Friday or coming back on a Sunday and just seeing the airports filled with college jerseys going to the I'm like, wow, everybody is really seeing all the Penn State fans flying in the Los Angeles as I'm leaving. Like they made a weekend of it. And it was a lot of Penn State fans here for USC and Penn State traveled. But then you're looking at matchups Oregon and Ohio State. That wasn't before that was just considered a non-conference game. Now, a conference game?
Oregon and Ohio State? That game was amazing. A record crowd at Autzen Stadium. Amazing. And people don't know Autzen Stadium is a beautiful stadium, by the way.
Beautiful, right? You know, nice sort of walk up the pageantry of that. Watching how that matchup turned out to be one of the best games of the weekend because going into it, it was like, all right, River River Showdown in Texas and Oklahoma. And very quickly, you just realize Texas is on a different level.
Oklahoma is not there anymore. But to see Ohio State and Oregon, two teams that I think stand out to me, I'm like, two teams that I think still have an opportunity. And this is what makes college football great is that we're watching these teams play big games. And before it was kind of like, you lose one game and your season was over.
You're done. Like, all right, well, see you next year. Let's get ready for the, you know, hopefully we get a Sugar Bowl berth or, you know, maybe get a chance to still make it to a Rose Bowl if another team goes. Now, in this 12 team playoff, Ohio State's not out of it.
Like, they're not out of it. My only thing is when the big game comes around for Ohio State, like Ohio State, Michigan, what's made that game so big over the last couple of years is what? That was like the game for the conference championship.
That was for the stakes, what made that game so high. But with Michigan already losing a couple of games, who knows what happened with Ohio State? We may have two loss teams in that one, maybe more between Michigan and Ohio State when that game comes up.
I'm just excited that we're getting these matchups that we never got. Like, I'm staying up way too late watching college football. Like, I'm way, because I'm on the East Coast a lot of times and I'm watching these games, but I'm still, my body clock is on the West Coast, but yet I'm watching, staying up late, watching LSU versus Ole Miss the other night.
And Lane King was awesome. That game was awesome. I am peeled to, I'm watching television from the morning I start my college game day experience and I'm watching football, I'm broadcasting a game and I've still got football games going on in my actual booth. And then I'm watching the games after, and then the late night games, I'm watching Ashton Gente, the running back at Boise State play against Hawaii at 11 PM Eastern time was the kick. I repeat 11 PM Eastern time, he's got me staying up.
And the last time I felt this way, you know, the last time I felt this way, you know, the last time I felt it like this. Marshall Faulk when he was at San Diego? No. Watch him running backs or just staying up late to watch college football? Just staying up late to watch college football and watch someone special. This is taking me back. Colt Brennan in Hawaii?
No, man. 2005 Reggie Bush, man. Oh, that's not that late.
I'm just telling that 2005 Reggie Bush, that's 20 years ago. I was thinking late at night. No, you, you feel like late at night. It was just yesterday, right? So I'm saying it wasn't, no, that's late at night.
Don't matter. If you're on the East Coast, if you're on the East Coast, even on the West Coast, that's still at eight o'clock kick or seven 30 kick. Reggie Bush had us up waiting till 10 o'clock just watching on the West Coast, East Coast. It's one 30, almost two o'clock, but you're watching good players.
You're watching good games. And Ashton Gente, man, just want to tip the cap again. This dude has already hoped for a thousand plus yards. 217 yards against Hawaii, right? He has in six games, 1248 yards. He's averaging 9.9 yards, a carry. Yes. And 17 touchdowns.
I saw our article over the weekend. He has a legit chance to take down Barry Sanders. Absolutely. Single season rushing record for division one. And keep an eye on this kid every single week. He's going to be what? First round for sure. Top 10. Is he a top 10 pick?
The way that the running back has been valued right now, it's probably not. Well, look, it's two years ago, Bijan Robinson won the top 10. So it's not crazy to think about him.
It's not crazy to think that. I'll leave you with this before we can get into some NFL talk about our duos and what we saw this weekend, right? We're talking about the best duos right now. Lamar and Derek, we'll get into that next, but do you remember the first running back taken in a 2024 NFL draft?
You know when that happened? Jonathan Brooks pick a 46 Texas running back. Hasn't played yet. Yeah. Hasn't played yet.
So just think about it. Ashton Gente, I will tell you this. I will say this today. On October 14th, 2024, there will be a running back taken in the first round because that dude is special at Boise State.
Speaking of special, Lamar Jackson, Derek Henry, man, two special guys on one special team and they showed it yesterday. We'll get into more of that right here on the Rich Eisen Show. Kirk Morrison filling in for Rich.

The eight in the box or nine in the box that you see knows you're going to get it. Yeah. And you know you're going to give it to them.
Yeah. And they know you're going to give it to them. What is that like for you? I just, I just love the game. I love having the ball in my hands and I love making plays. And I don't know, I just, it's just the game, man. Like that feeling when you, when everybody knows and that can't stop it. It's just, it's an indescribable feeling, man.
And that's just speaking for like us as a team. And you know, I just, I just love the game. I know you're smiling. You're just smiling as you're saying this.
It is just, it must be an amazing feeling to have that ability. Derrick Henry here on the Rich Eisen Show. Did you hear what Earl Thomas said before the divisional playoff game in Baltimore saying that the Patriots didn't want to tackle you, but they were going to have a different approach? Everybody was sending it to me. Everybody was showing it to me.
Okay. So now later on, you're in Baltimore, you get the ball, you're on the edge. Did you know that was Earl Thomas? Did you give him a second shove because it was Earl Thomas?
Yes. I was wondering because you gave him, you gave him one in the front and you gave him one slightly unnecessary one in the back. Well, what's so funny about that is I also focused on giving him another shove that I ran myself out of bounds. So the first time he kind of turned around and I could have turned up field, but I also focused on this, like giving him a shove that I ran myself out of bounds. But yeah, but yeah, I definitely did that for the rest of that. So then the last question is, was it worth it to run yourself out of bounds? I think it was. So call clickgrainger.com or just stop by. You know, this weekend, when you're watching football, especially the NFL on Sundays, there's things that kind of jump out to you. You know, for me, what jumped out to me was the matchup. It was the battle of the beltway, right? It was Baltimore, Washington. And we saw some of the quarterbacks and what Jaylin Jayden Daniels has been able to do so far this NFL season.
It's been, not only has he been the rookie of the year so far, but he's also been in the conversation or they've dropped his name in a conversation for MVP. But then you think about on the opposite side, he was going up against a two-time MVP in Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens who started the season off 0-2. And everybody said, oh, what is wrong with the Ravens? They lost to the Raiders. How'd you lose to the Raiders?
That was pretty bad. You lose 0-2, they lost to the Raiders. And all they've done is won now four consecutive games. They take care of business.
They find a way to beat up on the Washington commanders this past weekend. And the one thing I'm looking at, as always, when it comes to closers in a game or just duos, I didn't know if I was how this, I kind of knew how it was going to play out because I've always said, when you lose a game of the magnitude in which the Baltimore Ravens lost AFC championship game at home against Kansas City, you had the chiefs where you wanted them at your place. And yet you went away from your identity. You went away from what you've been, who you are, running the football, smash mouth, try to make Lamar do something that he's capable of, but yet it's not necessarily the fabric of what I think about the Baltimore Ravens football team. So seeing him throw the ball all over the place and see Zay Flowers, you know, fumble the football. To me immediately when that game was over, when the Ravens lost the AFC championship game to the chiefs, guess what they said?
We got to make sure this doesn't happen again. And they went and got Derrick Henry. Now I know Jerry Jones is seeing this again, like, and I don't want to bring that up, but sorry, TJ, but Derrick Henry should have been a Baltimore, should have been a Dallas Cowboy.
That's just what it should have been. He would have been the one thing that I said that the Cowboys would be good at. But Kirk, I'm gonna say this. You've seen the line, we've talked about how bad the line is. Do you think Derrick Henry would be accumulating the yards behind that line as it is? I don't think so. I don't think that he would have been getting off like this had he been a Dallas Cowboy.
Can I ask you this? Has the Tennessee Titans ever had the greatest line in football? I mean, have they had a great quarterback in football?
We could say Tannehill. Everybody knows when you play the Titans, you got to stop Derrick Henry. And Derrick Henry, those guys went to what, a divisional championship?
I mean, sorry, the divisional round of the playoffs. Almost went to a conference championship knowing that the only way that you're going to beat them is if you stop Derrick Henry. They didn't have the greatest offensive line. They didn't have Marcus Mariota, Ryan Tannehill, for God's sakes.
And yet they still found a way. I would have loved to seen Derrick Henry with the Dallas Cowboys. I think it would have give some kind of fear. It would make defenders have to say, you know what? We don't have, we can't play cover two. We got to stop that guy.
And even if you did put eight, nine, 10 men in a box, can you still stop that guy? So with the Ravens picking up Derrick Henry, I'm watching this two-man tango and watching the final sequence of a football game in which the Ravens win 30 to 23. I saw the challenge that having Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson in the same backfield, what it did to LuVu, Wagner, Dan Quinn, the head coach, everybody's saying, who do we go after? Who do we stop? Who do we bring our blitz to? Where do we put our extra defender? Do you go and try to go all in on Derrick Henry? But then that leaves who? Lamar Jackson.
Okay. No, no, no. Let's stop Lamar. But then what about Derrick Henry? And that's the way that game was closed.
That's the couple of weeks in a row. We've seen that where at the end of a game, like the overtime game against Cincinnati, Derrick Henry breaks off the big run and you do up game over. Same thing last, yesterday, it's game over when those two guys are in the backfield, they have an identity. The culture's already been set in Baltimore, but now they have an even more of an understanding of the identity.
They're going to run the football. Oh, and by the way, they got other guys involved. Obviously, likely, Andrews, Zay Flowers. I mean, Rashad Bateman even made an appearance. Hey, Rashad Bateman, welcome to, yeah.
Appreciate it. Rashad Bateman. I mean, everybody got involved when it comes to the Ravens, but when it comes time for the closers, those two guys know how to close it out.
And I'm thinking of like a duo like this, cause we've never seen it. Shout out to Lamar Jackson, by the way, the second all time leader in rushing at the quarterback position. He surpassed Cam Newton. Here's a little Lamar Jackson talking about surpassing Cam Newton and now he's just behind Michael Vick. I mean, it's dope. Not just because, you know, it's Mike Vick, number one, but it's like all the great guys who I'm in great company with, you know, Cam Newton and stuff like that.
Steven McNair, like all those great guys who was before me. It's just great to be in discussion with those guys. Yeah. That's a nice little beanie he got on there.
I need one of those. You like those beanies? I don't know about you in a beanie, but I've never seen Dale Tufo in a beanie, but I do like it. Let's see you trying to step your style game up, Dale Tufo.
It's all good. But now just 448 yards needed to be the all time leading rushing quarterback this year. Yeah. Oh, he, I think we can mark that down. He probably will be the all time leading rusher as a quarterback in NFL history. Michael Vick sitting in front of him is at 6,109 yards. But you're talking about Derrick Henry.
I mean, this is what you had hoped for when you signed the guy. He leads the NFL in rushing by almost a hundred yards. He's got 704 in the season, 5.9 yards per carry. Obviously he had that huge 87 yard run a couple of weeks ago. Eight touchdowns, leads the NFL in yards, yards per carry, touchdowns, the ultimate closer than Mario Rivera of the NFL right now. Ravens get a lead. You give it to the big fella. That's a wrap. And that's what you had hoped when you got the guy, you hoped he had all this left in the tank.
Didn't think he'd be this good, but this has been unbelievable. And like you said, playoff game at home, AFC championship, you run the ball six times running backs. Absolutely. You can't do that. You can't do that. Derrick Henry's going to get four times that if the same situation pops up again where you're hosting KC, maybe you're hosting Houston again. And so this is what you wanted.
And other teams had a chance to get them. Brock, I'm going to keep it real with you. 100%. Brock, go two-fold TJ. I'm going to be real with you. Playing linebacker in this league, you play on emotion. You play on adrenaline.
You're like, you going, how would you know that, Kirk? But playing in this league, like for me, I knew going up against Ladanian Tomlinson, right? Larry Johnson, you know, these are the Ricky Williams.
There's dudes that I knew. Trust me, LJ was balling. This past weekend, I saw CJ 2k, right? He was, he's a scout now in the NFL. Chris Johnson was scouting, doing some scouting for, I believe the senior bowl. So shout out Jim Nagy, the senior bowl. So I saw him, but there were guys for me that when I lined up five yards behind my defensive line, I knew I got to bring it every single play, especially in the beginning of the game. You're like, I got to go.
I got to be ready. As the game goes on, you start to get a little, you know, there's not a lot left in that tank as you go on. By the fourth quarter, there's a reason why Derrick Henry is getting these yards because business decisions are being had.
Guys don't have that same energy. And you're seeing what you don't see nobody trying to wrap. Everybody trying to throw a shoulder. You can't throw a shoulder in the fourth quarter with Derrick Henry. You got to put a body on him.
Guys don't have equally qualified to answer that. What is that like as that linebacker when it's the fourth quarter and you're dead tired and you see Larry Johnson and he's coming, you hear about this business? Jamal Lewis. Jamal Lewis.
I'm just saying these are dudes are coming downhill. And if you don't stop their feet before they get to their of the original line of scrimmage, by the time they get to the second level to you, they're running right through you. Like, trust me, Ricky Williams ran through my shoulder one time, almost took like the shoulder was gone. Like the shoulder was exposed. That little high knee, the shoulder out, shoulder gone. And now I'm like the business decision of how do I tackle him the rest of the game?
You get what I mean? So there's things that are happening in the game that linebackers and safeties. There's a reason why these plays are happening. There's a reason why Derrick Henry is the closer that he is because nobody wants to tackle that in the fourth quarter. I promise you.
I promise you it's, it's a, it's a, it's a big difference. So I'm not surprised at the yards he's getting in the fourth quarter, but I think we should start to like, put it, put a note together of the yards by Derrick Henry with five minutes left in the game. I think that may be a set alone, his yards with five minutes or less in the football game. And how many missed tackles go along with that? Because everyone knows you're trying to stop the run, but you don't have that same energy.
You don't have that same oomph, right? When you trying to tackle a dude who's 250 pounds coming downhill and the Ravens, it's not like they got little guys up front. They're bringing in Patrick Picard, like extra tight ends, extra offensive lineman. Fala Lele is like 370 on the offensive line.
It's, it's a difference. Yeah. Derrick Henry is now the favorite to win offensive player of the year. And maybe I've asked you this before you've been hosting with us for so many years now. Who is the hardest running back who delivered the biggest hit on you? Yeah. I was literally going to ask you that too.
Wow. Who delivered the biggest hit on me? I can't say who delivered it. You went to go hit someone and was like, oh man, they ran my ass over. Uh, TJ Duckett. TJ Duckett, aw man. Big TJ. TJ gave me a stinger. Like one of those stickers where you get hit and you feel like, whoa, there's a jolt that go through your body and you got to go to the sideline for a second.
Let me shake the cobwebs out a little bit. But, uh, former Michigan state running back TJ Duckett when he was a monster with the, uh, Atlanta Falcons. Think about him and Ward Dunn. Like, oh, we're doing a TJ. Oh my God. An extra chain strap in the mouthpiece, man.
Chris Panini coming up. Bingo. All right, Bill, we're recording now and please put your phone on silent. Oh, where is my phone? Let's go, man.
Get it together over there. Player. Go ahead. Pick on me the way that you want to. I wouldn't say that to my son. Just go.
