The Saints big man got it on the ricochet at the goal line. That was a thick pick. This is the Rich Eisen Show. Soundy drills it. No doubt about it.
It's a home run. Today's guest, 11 time Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald, NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, plus your phone calls, latest news, and more. And now, sitting in for Rich, it's Tom Pelissero. Welcome to what was supposed to be a Rich Eisen-less edition of the Rich Eisen Show. I am Tom Pelissero here with my guys in the studio, Chris Brockman, Tommy P, Mike DelTufo, TJ Jefferson, Howard.
I fully showed up or at least went to bed last night. Right. Prepared to do three hours on Colin Saunders and his brother. Was anyone else surprised that we've been deprived of this information for a year with the wall-to-wall coverage? No one bothered to mention, hey, the other guy on stage with Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, that's the brother of a former chief. And then, by the way, Colin Saunders gets a interception in that game. Now in the Saints. My first thought watching him run is, Andy Reid's going to sign this guy and play him at running back. Then I remembered he was on the team for four years. Andy Reid, of all people, never thought, let's give him the ball. I remember thinking as that play happened, what, a thick pick, as Kevin Harwin called it on the radio. Go down, big fella. Take the touch back.
No, when you get your opportunity, man, you run. Wow. 15.79 miles per hour.
According to NextGenStats, a 324-pound man. That is unbelievable. Was running. We will get to that game, but we start out on a different note. And this was something that I think that we all looked at going into the season and believed. And Aaron Rodgers flat out said it, to listen, if the Jets underachieve, in Rodgers' words, we're all going to be out of here. Even after two straight losses, even after a second straight, let's call it a pretty ugly loss, not ugly because of the weather this past Sunday, like it was the previous week against the Broncos, but because the Jets faced a really good Vikings team, Aaron Rodgers made a lot of throws as we documented yesterday, that looked like he was in essence throwing to Devante Adams already.
But when those passes are going to Allen Lazard and Mike Williams and timing is just that much off because you're not throwing to a seven time pro bowler, it becomes more difficult to complete them. Even within that context, this qualifies as if not a shocking move, because again, we all believed that this was a possibility if they underachieved, but the timing was truly a shock. Woody Johnson firing head coach, Robert Sala within the past two hours here, Sala had flown back with the team from London. He had done his press conference on Monday. There were no indications that this was something that was going to happen.
No outward indications. They're focused for any, if anything, for the Jets was on a potential Devante Adams trade, which by the way, I will tell you is still alive. That is still a possibility.
Devante Adams could be a New York Jet by the end of the day, even by the end of the show, if that happens, I'll be scrambling twice in a day because of the Jets. But Robert Sala being out at this stage after a two and three start, listen, they had gone through a lot over three years with the with the quarterbacks, with just not winning enough games. They had been dominant on defense.
The defense was still good. Jeff Olbrich, the D coordinator going to take over as the head coach, which makes a ton of sense. I just, listen, I'll preface this with this. I've known Robert Sala for a number of years. I think that everybody looked at him when he was with the 49ers as their defensive coordinator, making a deep playoff run that this was a guy who was going to be the next one up. I went back earlier today because I was on the phone with somebody in the broader football industry who was talking about the year that Sala was hired. The two most popular in-demand candidates at that point were Arthur Smith and Robert Sala. Those were the two that everybody wanted to interview. They were two of, I believe the first three hired, if not the first two hired. And it was the Falcons didn't let Arthur Smith out of the building. The Jets then had Robert Sala in the building.
Both those deals got done and that set the tone. Here's the rest of the class of head coaches that were hired that year. So obviously Arthur Smith, Robert Sala, David Cully was hired that year, which is already several coaches ago from the Houston Texans. Urban Meyer, which again, that feels like eons ago. Brandon Staley was hired that year.
There's only two out of seven that are still employed three years later. It's Nick Sirianni who's on shaky ground. Who already, if you turn on sports radio in Philadelphia, should be gone by the end of the day, even though he's been to the playoffs three years in a row and been to a Superbowl and Dan Campbell. And so you've got two coaches who they've been to the playoffs. They've been there. They seem to have things again, depending how you feel about the Eagles right now, they at least seem to have had things going in the right direction.
They've won a lot of football games. Everybody else hired that year is gone. I remember having dinner with Sala during the off season that first summer. And I just remember, and you see us all the time, like when you know guys personally and the excitement level to be in this position, to have the opportunity to go be a head football coach, which he had always, he made no bones about. He wanted that opportunity. He wanted the chance to run the program.
And there was so much excitement about it. One of the first sequences that took place there was moving on from Sam Darnold, which I think that everyone would be in agreement at that point was probably the thing that needed to happen for all parties involved, including Sam Darnold himself. And they drafted Zach Wilson. Number two, overall, that obviously was a fateful decision that colored the first two years of the solid regime that you then bring in Aaron Rogers, who gets hurt four snaps in.
This was the first year that everything seemed to be dialed up. And again, the conversation yesterday was not about publicly and with the people in the league, it was not about is Robert Solon going to be gone right now. It was about, can they get Devante Adams? What's it going to cost?
And is that enough to turn this thing? Robert Solon himself, as he told Jay Glazer earlier today was totally blindsided by walking into the meeting this morning and being told you're out, Obrick's in. That's five games in.
They are playing on Monday night for his share of first place in the AFC East. Why we got to this point to the extent that I've been told this morning, why it happened now, a team that's not out of it, that could possibly have a perennial All-Pro receiver in the lineup for the first time. It was that, and I'm paraphrasing here, but needed a change, needed to see if doing something different was going to allow us to play more consistently and play better moving forward. I certainly, you know, rewind in my mind watching that game very early on Sunday morning in London and the cutaways to Robert Sola, who had kind of tried to this off season. It was, he's spending more time with the offense.
He's trying to be more of the leader of the team, as opposed to the leader of the defense. And there were a lot of times where the offense was on the field or the defense was on the field, that there were cutaway shots on TV to Robert Sola. And it just didn't look like the same Robert Sola. And again, there's nothing there that puts off the bells of, boy, this guy looks like he knows this is his final game.
It was more, this isn't the Sola we have been accustomed to seeing. The high energy guy, the one who, in those San Francisco days, was out there celebrating with players and flexing and getting everybody pumped up. It was a guy who just looked like he's trying to figure it out and trying to figure out what more do we have to do just to pull this thing together. It's possible there are going to be more changes as we're talking right now at a little past noon Eastern time, 9 a.m. Pacific, Nathaniel Hackett, the OC is still there. Could you have changes in the procedures, changes in personnel? I'd say everything is on the table at this point, but it does not sound like there's other coaching moves that have been made at this point for the New York Jets.
This then brings us to the question of what are the Jets? What are we trying to do for the next 12 games and you hope more? You don't make this move right now if you're thinking, well, we're just, we're not good enough, we're tanking out. You make this move now if you're Woody Johnson, who has certainly a reputation for at times being emotional in decision-making and was just watching, Robert Saleh, far from the first head coach to be fired after a trip to London. First head coach, as far as I'm aware, to be fired by the former U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom after playing a game in London. Woody Johnson may be seen of some of his old friends, maybe had him around the game, you're bringing Aaron Rodgers there, you should feel good, you leave with a really bad feeling after that game.
I understand all aspects of the emotional layers to this, but at its core, you're thinking we got to do something different. Woody obviously didn't want to come back home and if the offense struggles, you're boos from the crowd and they didn't, he didn't want to hear they're being fire, saw a chance, even though we really hadn't heard those. A lot of times you get those, right? With a team that's not playing well enough, with a coach that's on the hot seat, you at some point get some type of outward signs of it that were headed that direction, particularly if you're five games in. The closest thing I can think of to a firing this early in recent years was Bill O'Brien got fired four games into the COVID year in 2020, I believe it was for Brockman, you can check me on that, was three or four games in and they had faced really hard teams out of the gate, but that was the same off season in which he had traded away DeAndre Hopkins and they were switching things up, but Bill O'Brien had been in the playoffs every year. Robert Sola hadn't and the primary reason for that was quarterback play. It was two years of Zach Wilson being up and down, it was four games, thank you, it was four, two years of Zach Wilson being up and down, then you bring in Aaron Rodgers, it's four snaps and you're back to Zach Wilson being up and down. They were three and three last year with Zach Wilson, they were playing okay. Well you've seen the stats, I mean through five games they've scored the exact same number of points this year with Aaron Rodgers and last year Zach Wilson. And therein lies the issue here which is Rodgers is obviously very very close with Nathaniel Hackett, those two are on the same page, the whole thing is not clicking the way that it needs to be. You're not going to get rid of the quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, not right now, we can certainly when Rich joins us in a little bit get into what does this say about the big picture of the Jets moving forward. We know we got a quarterback with no guaranteed money beyond this year, we know we got a GM with no contract for next year, and now you have no permanent head coach in place. So there's plenty of questions on that front, but for the next 12 games it's does this shake things up enough?
Does this give you some type of juice? Jeff Ulbricht is, I got to know him more at the Senior Bowl last year, he was the head coach of one of the teams in that game. He definitely projects like a head coach, he is a tough dude, he is very energetic and upbeat, he's going to have a little bit different personality than Robert Sala did, certainly then what we saw from Robert Sala again as those losses started to mount over the course of time. He came across really well on hard knocks last year I thought. He has leadership traits, there's no doubt about it, and he's a guy who you were waiting for when the Jets were good and he was going to become a head coaching candidate.
He's 47 I believe, he played a decade or so with the 49ers, played a lot of special teams, he's got a heck of a back story, heck of a life story. He now takes over a team that again playing on Monday night for a sure first place in the AFC East on a team that just fired its head coach. The rest of the schedule, you see right here, at Pittsburgh the following week, that's not a gimme game, you would hope you would beat Earmouth's Brockman, the worst team in the NFL right now, the Patriots, in week eight.
You would hope that to win. You got to host the Texans at Arizona, that's not a gimme game, not with the way that they played this past weekend, then you're home against the Colts. You got a ways out till the bye right here. You got an extra day of preparation this week, players will get back in the building presumably today, they'll kind of ramp up the practice load come Thursday, but you've got to find a way to at least be, let's call it three and three, over these next six weeks to stay in the hunt. You're going to have to figure out some things pretty fast and we'll eventually hear from Aaron Rodgers about this decision.
We will eventually hear more from other members of Jets Brass. There's been nothing so far from Joe Douglas, the GM, who again, his job is on the line if this entire thing doesn't work out quite possibly as well, but the question is going to be in the short term, we can get to all the big picture stuff in the short term. Does this move, much like we talked about yesterday with the Devante Adams trade, does firing Robert Sala make the impact for the Jets to all of a sudden flip the switch?
I'm a believer that there's a placebo effect a lot of times with change and really the only jobs you can do that with are head coach and quarterback. You saw it when Carolina with Andy Dalton went into Vegas, everyone felt like, hey, something's different. They went in there and got a win two years ago. You saw it with Jeff Saturday. I was here that week with you guys when that happened. Who's the interim? Uh, I think it's Jeff Saturday. They go to the Raiders and they won that game.
They lost every other game, but they won that week. This gives you the opportunity Monday night. You'll feel like something's different. If the offense isn't any better. And again, we'll see here, maybe even over the next 24 hours is Devante Adams, a New York Jet.
If he's going to the jets to the extent that he might be healthy, which is still a question mark, he's got a legit hamstring injury. The first practice of the week that matters is on Thursday. He already knows the offense.
So let's call it the next 24 to 48 hours. Regardless of that, is this the type of shakeup that has the impact Woody Johnson is hoping? Woody Johnson, quite frankly, I'll speak frankly on this. Woody Johnson just made it that much harder to hire his next head coach. If it's not Jeff Ulbrich, which it could be, we'll see. There's been interim coaches who have earned their way into those jobs.
Antonio Pierce did it last year. If it's not, you made it just that much harder because you're already pushing back against this idea that you're impetuous and that it can be hard to work for the New York Jets. You just fired a head coach with a two and three record after five games.
That doesn't make it any easier. There's also only 32 of those jobs. And if Aaron Rodgers is still there, there's only one of those jobs to the four time NFL MVP.
But if we just reduce it to the micro, because that is the lens my understanding is through which the Jets organization, specifically Woody Johnson, we're looking, if this is about taking a team that they think has the talent, they've got the quarterback, they've had good draft classes under Joe Douglas. They believe this is enough. This at least is the best shot they have to get this thing back on track. I will say this, they lose Monday night to Buffalo.
It is going to be even edgier than it even edgier than it is already around that place. This is your shot. You had one, you had one grenade to throw and blow the thing up and start over.
This is it. Cause you're not getting rid of the quarterback. There's no bench in the quarterback.
There's really not a lot of other personnel moves you can make. This is the one, and we will find out come Monday night. Is this a different jets team or is this just the jets team?
That's as flawed as they looked through the first five weeks of the season, a lot more on this. Rich is going to join us. Uh, at least it was afternoon. He didn't wake up to the news today. you find out how out of touch they are they don't know anything man like one of the questions for the nfl team was and we were asking a guy running back for the packers uh can't think of his name but the question was complete the sentence strip and use pump you know like strip mall strip strip poker strip sack i said name complete the word strip he said purr strip purr i went hold on man i quit breathing how is that your point of reference to complete the word strip purr p-e-r that was it i was done that was one of my great moments and again you just walk away and you just you realize that in the moment like okay this is it and i'm gonna let this thing go after the show he asked me he said steve is there any way we can edit that out i said sir we're not editing that out matter of fact we're gonna embellish it yes you're gonna say purr so loud welcome back to the rich eisen show radio network i am tom pelissero sitting at the rich eisen show desk furnished by granger with supplies and solutions for every industry granger has the right product for you call click granger.com or just stop by eventful morning in the nfl and in jets land which currently extends in some capacity all the way to london where our friend rich eisen our humble host called what ended up being the final game of the robert saula era as head coach of the jets saula fired just a couple of hours ago rich i want to bring you in here and i and i gave you the floor your reaction when i believe early afternoon london time you heard this news absolutely stunned absolutely stunned didn't see it coming didn't feel it didn't see any pressure felt didn't feel tightening of of anything the only um the only second that robert saula even intimated anything uh on this front or twitched in in anything close to this direction during our broadcast meeting um which turned out to be his last as the head coach of the jets was he said that it was a disappointing result against the broncos and that's the difference between being three and one or two and two and fire everybody that's what he said and uh all of us in the meeting when he left thought he was referring to you know the longtime listener first time caller set uh in the 24-7 365 um you know sports talk radio world that was born out of new york city pretty much that was the extent of it didn't sense it um and rogers talked about uh his relationship with saula as being positive as being good um the only difference between last year and this year with saula and and rogers potentially um was the fact that saula showed up in offensive meetings for the first time um as the hc of the nyj he had never been in offensive meetings before but i guess wanted to be in on those this year uh due to its uh extreme importance and in my estimation feeling that the other side of the football was just fine so that's just my sense of it i i have no idea what this accomplishes i have absolutely no idea what this accomplishes other than telling everybody uh you needed to be on your p's and q's but i think everybody assumed that um coming into the season that rogers has even mentioned that if it doesn't work out there this year then everybody's pretty much gone right uh everybody has acknowledged what's been at stake this season uh i just have no earthly idea what handing everything over to the defensive coordinator jeff vulbrick uh who's never been in hc in the nfl before what this accomplishes other than you're taking away the play caller uh of the guy um you know on the side of the football that's actually been performing in championship level honestly i'm i'm uh i'm at a loss totally gobsmacked don't know why this would uh need to happen and just my one last uh observation here if you're devante adams why would you want to join a team that just fired their coach why would you want to join a team that uh has no future direction um at the uh head coaching position uh when when this is something he just dealt with in in las vegas that everything that he he went to vegas to sign up for playing with his college quarterback for josh mcdaniels and then mcdaniels reverses course sends derek carr going he sticks around in las vegas and then they uh fire mcdaniels and in comes an interim head coach with whom obviously he doesn't see eye to eye or doesn't see eye to eye about the future of that franchise and wants out because clearly they're at a crossroads where uh antonio pierce is saying he doesn't even know who the starting quarterback next week for the raiders is going to be and so he's going to want to join a team uh that just fired their head coach why would he want to do something like that even with aaron rogers there it makes no sense to do something like this unless there's something completely beneath the surface i'm unaware of and that's why i turn to you as the my information man and the guy sitting in the chair today what are you hearing well this is all taking place here obviously very recently rich so i mean i've had some conversations this morning the first thing i would point out is robert sala joins a long list of head coaches who have been fired after a appearance and a loss on the international stage in london the difference between sala and those other coaches is his owner happens to be the former ambassador to the exact country that you were playing in perhaps had some friends there for the game perhaps this was a a bigger deal egg on the face with all of his brits for his friends there for woody johnson there's there are a lot of a lot of connections here but at the same time rich you know when you realistically step back i mean two weeks ago what were we talking about with the jets they went in they took care of business against the titans you're two and one you were seeing those flashes of aaron rogers everybody seemed pumped up that this is this is headed in the right direction you have an ugly loss it is impacted obviously by the rain and the elements last week against tenver and then you played a vikings team that's been a buzzsaw and has absolutely demolished the houston texans and they beat the 49ers and they just went into i guess tom i i i know what a very good team no i know i know what happened uh in terms of the the wins and losses i just and and i'm sure you want to talk egg on your face sam donald's the winning quarterback who's five and oh and i'm sure he might be looking around woody johnson and saying you know what the hell is going on around here but firing the head coach after five games and he's never replaced the head coach in the middle of the season um so and i know what this is just first blush and i'm looking for an answer to what may be unexplainable other than the fact that he thinks this might spark something i i don't know i i it's not that side of the ball that needs sparking well i i would i would say this too rich just in watching the game and the robert sola that we've known for so long has been the energized guy who's on the field back in the san francisco days and flexing to his defense and getting pumped up you know it's one of the things where in hindsight i noticed it during the game on sunday morning and now that you think in retrospect you you you start to pull apart a little bit more robert sola didn't look quite the same on the sideline and i wonder if when every time you're seeing him and whether it's offense defense on the field he's not talking there's not a lot of emotion i wonder to the extent that woody johnson certainly has ears and eyes open to a lot of things and what the perception of the franchise is and you just wonder when you've got a guy like jeff olberg who's very well respected in the building he's a former player he is a high energy guy himself that you can convince yourself that this is going to just change the energy around the building to the to the point on devante adams i mean think about this i don't know precisely rich devante adams sleep schedule but as of yesterday before that game with the saints and the chiefs it was still clear from people i talked to the two teams were the most likely landing spots were the jets and the saints well the saints have derek carr suffer an oblique injury it his status is unclear at minimum right going forward here so devante adams goes to bed to that news and then wakes up this morning to robert sola has been fired and suddenly the two most logical destinations for him the landscape of that has changed but the thing with the jets is aaron rogers is still there as we discussed on the show yesterday aaron rogers was throwing passes in that london game that very much looked like he was relying on devante adams to or someone else to make a devante adams like play for him we'll see over the next 24 hours what this does to the devante adams trade talks because there's still reason to believe if this is going to happen it makes sense for it to happen now there's also not a lot of instances i mean last year it was at the trade deadline the raiders fired josh mcdaniels three hours later so i think timelines are kind of out the window on how all this stuff plays out but it still makes sense in the adams case if he's going to be in new york jet it happens today on the same day that they've just made a change at the top rich and i just want to push back a little bit too i think this strengthens the case that devante adams is going to the jets because he knows who's in charge aaron rogers is in charge and why wouldn't he want to go play with this guy now i i understand that that's going to be you know a widely held belief that rogers is in charge i think anybody who's had their ear to the ground i'm free to say this sort of stuff tom i know you need you need sources 15 ways to sunday in order to start saying things with the with uh uh conviction all i'm hearing is that rogers has been all over devante adams for weeks yes and that he has been talking to him and that they have been wide open in their communication and obviously this might be in its situation where rogers is like i don't know what's going on around here i love the new dc i love the dc he'll be a great hc and you should still come here um that that may be the case i have no idea if salah has been in everybody's ear on third and fourth down like say something that happened uh in the london game third and short fourth and short they hand it off twice rogers might be looking around saying why is this ball being taken out of my hands that could have been salah pressing on his headset saying run it i have no idea what's going on there clearly not a lot of people do um and this could be a situation where adams does know rogers can get his way and he'll go there but what about the year after what about the year after that what about the year after that um and and you do have to sit here and wonder if rogers is even sitting around saying why did i decide to do this i should have retired a year ago i have no idea nobody really does it's just kind of surprising that you would switch a head coach in midstream and if i'm lamar jackson i'm on the phone to debonte adams saying hey man uh hope you do you you like edgar allan poe for more than just his poetry and that's why you posted what you posted uh because uh my coach here is the most tenured coach behind andy reid uh in all of football along with uh mike tomlin so we're not going anywhere i'm not going anywhere we're going to the super bowl with you you should come here and eric dicosta makes the move and does this before the jets even put all their pieces together by the end of the day that's what i would do if i were the ravens uh but again uh you're right chris rogers may be on the phone right now to debonte adams salting that away uh with joe douglas after he's calling up saying what gives because i don't think he saw this one coming either um again i was around them and i everybody could keep you know a wall up um and not um not say anything and but i didn't get a sense that this was an eggshell situation at all but here we are yeah i wonder if robert sila feels relieved in any way that you know this the headache the stress the drama is just all over now finally i don't know i don't think anybody wants to be 20 and 36 and have being fired in the middle of the season in the middle of what he thinks uh he could have turned around maybe that honestly it could be we're all grassmen at straws here yeah totally and i know this i know this shove everybody views it as rogers hated him again both guys said that this was him salah given rogers crap for not giving a two-score lead to the defense and this was rogers way of pushing him back and saying there's your two-score lead brother you know and and i know everyone's viewing this and the cadence gate and all that is a sign of a rift between the quarterback and the head coach and the narrative will definitely be rogers went to woody johnson and said fire the coach i i don't know man i'm not going to go in that direction uh i i do not know the answer all i know is i didn't feel it i didn't sense it and didn't think when the jets lost that game you know if rogers had actually if mike williams had turned his head and played defense on uh stefan gilmore had they actually scored and beaten the vikings this would be different is that what we're saying three and two he would he would not have had egg on his face around you know his buddies you know out here in here in in the uk uh i i don't i don't know what it is all i know is it's shocking didn't see it coming and um and don't know how it actually fixes things but if they did need an actual burst of energy uh obrick's a different guy that is for sure and maybe we'll see a different voice and what a game it is now that monday night week six against the bills this is it um you lose a home game with the bills you fall two and a half behind them with an interim head coach um i i i don't know how that works forward but man how about that um sam darnold goes in vikings beat the jets sam donalds beats the jets and now we're seeing a ghost uh at the hc it's kind of wild yeah rich also maybe maybe you're the ziggy uh last uh game of bella checks a win of bella checks career and now last solid game hey if i'm ever fluke or doug peterson i'm looking over my shoulder be worried well you know in london you got to look both ways before crossing the street because you kind of confused it's which way the car's coming so you know you got to look down oh look left oh the last piece of this rich because i know you've got some other important obligations throughout the course of this day the other piece that i would bring up is important than this other important obligation if he sits there and stews in this the entire day and this is it's a wasted afternoon and evening in london i got things to do certainly is the implications it's fair to say by making this move now the jets and woody johnson are approaching this as we think we've still got a good team we think that changing the head coach allows us to play better to play more consistently and to make a run my question for you rich is what if they don't what if this move begets a nine and eight eight and nine type of a season and aaron rogers who has said on multiple occasions hey i think i actually can play two three more years here right in this in your mind is this the full hard reset do we go into in other words a cycle of aaron rogers now gets to pick his head coach or do we go into a cycle of joe douglas's contract is up aaron rogers has no guaranteed money left on his deal we might have a total system reboot in new york i i have no idea there's obviously so much time between now and then the one thing i can say for sure in my firm belief about all of this and i look at all the jet fans out there who are deep down thinking maybe belicheck know that warm place that we mentioned about um uh in relation to the chiefs acquiring devante adams from the raiders that that warm place needed to freeze over that's the same place that needs to freeze over for belicheck to take a job from the new york jets he will he will he will he will still be um a uh a broadcaster next year if that's his only option that's my two cents i shouldn't you know i should never go out and actually nobody should ever go out and speak for bill belicheck but i think i'm safe in saying the last job on earth he would take is the head coach of the new york jets the aid the nyj that cocktail napkin doesn't exist anymore and that's my two cents while we are speaking here rich by the way statement from woody johnson just released by the new york jets saying in part this morning i informed robert solid that he will no longer serve as the head coach of the jets thanked him for his hard work these past three and a half years and wished him and his family well moving forward this was not an easy decision but where we are but we are not where we should be given our expectations i believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction jeff obrick will serve as our interim head coach for the remainder of the season he is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team i believe he along with the coaches on the staff can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this off season so there you have it in slightly longer words than i used they believe they've got the talent they believe that this change gets more out of this team and we shall see starting by the way on monday night at home against the bills for a share of first place in the afcs yeah and i think i i have that statement here the one last line is and my friend nigel thinks this is good and uh and um i hold on a second is that say mary poppins told him to do this shim shimry shim shim there you go expia super this whole thing is super califragilisticexpialidocious i don't know what's going on here in london man but uh i'm here all week we have real quick rich before we let you go what do you have uh on the docket here prior to the jags and bears getting in town oh i'm just gonna actually i thought today would be a day off to be honest with you um just do nothing and then and then you guys text me solidified i'm like what i'm like okay let's uh let's zoom into the let's zoom into the show and talk about it uh and then uh bears thursday jags friday and then the game sunday and then i'll be home it's rare that i'm the one that gets to break news on the group chat so i felt i felt pretty good well done tj well done tj well done that's okay no that doesn't hurt me listen this whole business where i'm a jet fan and all this stuff and i'm biased and all that honestly the vikings fans are tearing me apart right now and i heard nothing from them nothing from them in the first half when the vikings broke 17 nothing and then i'm starting to call a jet comeback and suddenly i'm a homer i literally wouldn't have given my left you know what for a one score game at the end and actually got it so i i so how are you doing down there in case you're dumb i didn't give it up thank you seriously we're done anyway so what hey get out of town and i mean it all right i'm out of here thanks again guys thank you rich all right brother rich eisen will uh a little more to say i imagine over the rest of this week uh it's it's great it's great tj just texted us sala fired this morning and rich just wrote back all caps what roof ruined his ruined his tea ruined tea time for rich all right well uh that's a shame woody johnson's got an over action monday on a tuesday off to a roaring start uh we'll pick up and do our part at the top of the next hour well it's got a game to talk about there was a game yeah last night it was an interesting one the saints go in one direction and the chiefs no matter who's out there going the other let's throw in trouble tom i think we're in trouble well fans of other teams are all in trouble is is what i'm saying well let's let's get into parts would you be able to give an nfl team a good 15 scripted to start a game larry could you really do that really do you think so not now what do you mean i would need i would need to i would need to study it okay i would need to um you know go go down on the field i would need to just talk to the offensive coordinator i would need to take a little course on it and then there's no doubt in my mind that i could do it what would you be would you be a passing offense a running offense what would you be what would you be a lot of trickery yeah it would be a lot of trickery playground style a lot of trickery a lot of trick i would have i here's what i would be doing yes i would be setting up the defense okay i'm going like this and now i'm coming back for the pass okay so i would do that a couple of times and then the third time i would go like this i think and so that place called the the zoom the zoom down that would be a zoom down so like double triple quadruple moves yes setting setting them up setting them up i'd be setting up everybody that's that's how i would that's how i would plan my offense a lot of decoys a lot of setups a lot of smoke and mirrors yes and then at some point there has to be a play that actually works there'd be many plays to work they're being set up all over the place they're not even gonna know what's going on they're gonna be so confused come on sounds good right it sounds good you're hired sounds good larry david by the way i'm available there you go larry david here on the rich eisen show i'm available robert salah i'm available well welcome back to the rich eisen show tom pelissero in for rich once again today the big news of course of the day robert stall out as head coach of the new york jets there is a larry david segment that uh well it's it's now slightly dated i'm sure i'm sure it'll come up several more times from this very show but uh no longer robert stella maybe it'll be as you said in the break brockman maybe deon sanders uh tires larry david is his oc uh next year it feels like larry has some good ideas the offense looks terrible so maybe they should call larry and get somebody you know get some ideas there right now we'll see operationally what changes on offense maybe maybe a wide receiver uh joining the mix here coming up but for the moment the big change at the top uh let's talk about the game last night since we haven't gotten there just yet the kansas city chiefs i went back through the box score this morning obviously it's a dominant effort they had twice the time possession they have twice the yards i'm struck by this version of the kansas city chiefs almost looks like something that bill belicheck did a lot in new england through the years which is you have the players who went out someplace else from your team got paid elsewhere didn't work out everyone decided they were done and then they come back and they absolutely take over on your team again belicheck did that for years not just with players with coaches too coaches yeah and that was both a function of you know system and scheme it was also finances because when somebody else is paying the player or somebody else is paying the coach gets who's not paying them bill now here's andy reid with juju smith schuster i believe on a minimum deal with kareem hunt on a minimum deal and those two plus travis kelsey last night they were the centerpiece of the offense along with patrick mahomes obviously this was i mean they pulled the numbers here so last night kareem hunt 27 carries for 102 yards wow he was sitting on the street not literally but figuratively it's a football term he's out there anyone could have signed him we call that the crib tom since march atc seven months atc at the crib for kareem hunt nobody touches him didn't he might have had one workout in there but nobody was bringing him in andy reid signs him 27 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown in his second game back also had a catch for 15 yards in that game leading receiver not named travis kelsey leading receiver that is not dave taylor swift juju smith schuster seven for 130 juju was cut by the patriots who right now look like the worst team in the nfl and i get it all right when you're in like a rebuild from the star chair standpoint juju's knee wasn't right you got a bunch of young dudes that you like maybe not a number one receiver but juju's probably not a number one receiver either he's a valuable two three type piece if you were able to get healthy you don't want to cut one of your young guys you cut juju it makes sense one team was in on juju one team immediately from what i heard called like get the medicals and stuff on juju it's the chiefs they're like hey this guy was really good when we won the super bowl a couple of years ago let me just bring him back and it's the patriots who are paying them juju is making nothing from the chiefs seven for 130 next leading receiver michael hartman same thing no one wanted him the jets are just getting rid of them last year because it's not working out there after he was coming off an injury hadn't really fit in they had some young guys that they wanted to put on the field the chiefs trade for him they re-sign him this off season again for basically no money they bring him in and he also plays a factor on a night where they're without a couple of their other wide receivers and in spite of the fact that hartman barely practiced this week because he was dealing with some type of a knee issue this is resourceful by andy reid somehow every game regardless who's on the field they're the most entertaining team to watch let's go ahead and run a direct snap to travis kelsey kind of an option play let's just run that they're gonna find some way which again brings me back to a point of me at the top of the show which is i i'm borderline offended that andy reid never gave colin sounders the ball when you see how that big man can move he moved man i looked it up on pro football reference two offensive snaps in four years with the cheese come on zero touches yes he played more with the saints when he was there last year he played a couple dozen snaps there mainly as like a lead blocker type but you put the ball in his hands he looked confident man he fumbles that ball on the way back and obviously none of this leads to the saints winning the game but like you watch him switching hands with the ball get in the outside hand and he is moderate yeah he is moving you don't see a whole lot of dudes moving like that that are that big and that was basically the high point for the saints the entire game i i made the point in the show i remember it was yesterday if it was last week but a big piece of the saints success early in the season when they were putting up all the points everyone's going oh my god the saints team looks like they're for real it was deep shots to rashid shahid that was a huge part of how they flipped games was it's a deep shot last night i believe that's their only touchdown that's how they got back in the game deep shot to rashid shahid yeah but that's you just watch it and you know kamir had some runs but it wasn't like they were taking over on that side of the ball right and then the rest you know chris alava is a really talented player but just not consistently in the offense catches 10 yards and then derek carr suffers an oblique injury and after the game derek carr is going to the podium talking to reporters and saying this for me not to be out there with my guys no matter the situation it's it takes something i couldn't do what i needed to do in the simplest form and so um i asked if there was anything we could do about it and there was not enough time to be able to do that and so i would have done anything to stay out there and keep fighting but uh i just i couldn't so it sucks was it that last hit or was yeah it wasn't even it wasn't even the hit honestly um but just when i dropped back and torqued to throw that ball to tip um that's when i that's when i felt it i'm not a doctor nor a twitter doctor but the guy saying that he felt like he pulled his oblique while just throwing the ball to me says don't count on derek carr being out there this week right anthie richardson missed a game this past weekend with an abdominal strain and oblique strain if you can't turn yeah i mean to derek carr's point he said they were out of time but also you get shot up with that it's not necessarily going to restore the functionality it wasn't about pain it was about he couldn't turn and torque the ball now derek carr has played through a lot of stuff through the course of his career as he said he'll want to be out there with his guys i i don't know that that's a given and to the extent that devante adams was watching that game last night if he made it to the what six eight minutes mark left in that game and sees derek carr come out you got to take a step back and go is this going to be an ongoing type of an issue here ultimately devante adams the raiders hold the leverage of they get to negotiate and figure out what team they can get the best offer from devante adams leverage is he can refuse to restructure his contract to go some place he doesn't want to go if it's a team like the saints that would need to do something to the contract in all likelihood before potential trade but now if you're devante adams and you're trying to decide what do i what do i want to do like where do i actually want to be your buddy who's the quarterback there suffering an injury on the same night that that team falls to two and three they got the bucks this week right and if that's going to be either you know in all likelihood jake hayner if it's not derek carr or else spencer rattlers on that team too but two guys who have never started an nfl game going out and facing a bucks team where todd bowls lives to face inexperienced quarterbacks with all of his blitz packages now devante adams who might not be healthy this week he's gonna get traded to a team and then all of a sudden they're two and four and they got to go like 10 and one the rest of the way to get into the playoffs like that's no dice maybe maybe eight and three but point is they'd have to make a run that's a fairly big you know type of a risk so we'll keep an eye on devante adams and certainly keep an eye on what the jets are willing to do because that trade is alive do they actually pull off the trade on the same day that robert sulla gets fired that would be a daily double that we don't see a whole lot they do have the extra day because they don't play till monday night so they're not having like a real practice and all likelihood until thursday they're going to set the energy today but if they want to get devante adams back to the extent that again we don't know he's got an actual hamstring injury he's a legit banged up he wouldn't have played this week if he was traded you know correct it sounded and i know the rapport said this on sunday that he's you know getting healthy getting close to returning from what i've heard over the last couple of days it's not a given that devante adams is ready to play this week maybe not even the following week so again if this is what you're counting on to kind of give you a springboard here and get some positive juice going that may not arrive instantaneously and with a player at devante adams age i'd also think that's one more reason that if he's still feeling anything in the hamstring you'd be really cautious about putting him out there at anything less than 100.0 percent so for the new orleans saints they're now the team that was one of the hot teams and the exciting teams in the first two weeks are on a three game losing skid their head coach dennis allen faced questions at the end of last season about his job and that's another takeaway my brain doesn't take long to go from woody johnson fired robert solid today to what other owners who don't need any excuse to make decisions asap how much is there are their eyes twitching today and thinking like wolf they're gonna get a head start do i need to do i need to do something right now bingo let's have an overreaction monday on a tuesday next on the rich eisen show bingo all right phil we're recording now and please put your phone on
