Now. On with the show. This is the Rich Eisen Show. And the kick is good! The Seahawks win the game!
Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. Do you think we've seen the last of Russell Wilson? Honestly, I hope we have. I'm not done. Earlier on the show, NFL Network Insider Tom Pellisero.
Coming up. Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young. Actor and comedian Kevin Pollack. And now, it's your rich eyes. Our number two of the Rich Eisen Show is on the air, Tom Pellisero.
We just said goodbye to him. And now, Steve Young's going to be joining us shortly. What's more likely in a moment? Kevin Pollack in studio R3. It's just always a dynamite time whenever he joins us as well.
844-204-Rich is the number to Don. We'll take a phone call in a moment. Started the show by talking about how Seattle could make the playoffs at 3-1. A great start. And if they do make it, who would be off it?
You know, Washington could be one of those teams. It's Marcus Mariota again for them. It was announced an hour while we were on there at hour number one by Dan Quinn that it's a second straight week. That Jaden Daniels will be out. And it does look like no Terry McLaurin either.
He's now officially called. week to week there. And um Um we'll see how that works out. The Arizona Cardinals are 2-2. They started 2-0.
They've now lost 2-0 at the final gun. By a field goal from their opponent after. Uh in their case in San Francisco taking the lead lately. Last night they tied the game late. After falling down by the score of 20 to 6, two unanswered touchdowns.
And then Chad Ryland, man. Didn't get the ball in the landing zone, which meant all. All Sam Donald needed was two and a half first downs. And set things up for the game-winning field goal. And now Arizona's two and two.
leading Kyler Murray to once again yet another year in Arizona to talk about why something is wrong with the offense where they're not on tilt with somebody like himself. and Marvin Harrison Jr. And Trey McBride, a guest of ours a few weeks ago, who is one of the most prolific pass catchers in the National Football League, just to name a few.
Now, I understand James Conner's out for the season and they're. Who the next two men are. Um uh in their running back depth drop, but this is what he had to say, Kyler. We just gotta make more plays. We gotta we gotta Gotta show up and be ready to go.
You know what I mean? It's like we're just. loading, you know what I mean? And it ta it's it's taking too long, you know. Obviously there's the resilience of the team is is you love to see it and you feel like give yourself a chance to win the game at the end.
But it's it's just too late. Two and two, by the way, um uh unless the uh Colts Beat the Rams and go to 4-0 here up the road on Sunday. 2-2 will be last place. In the NFC West. Dang.
Even if the 49ers lose to Jacksonville.
So that would make it A last place positioning after four weeks, despite splitting their first four games. Their next home game is next week against Tennessee. And a lot is focused right now on Marvin Harrison Jr., Who dropped one on a wide open space? You can't get more wide open than he was in Santa Clara last week when he just dropped it. He had another drop early on in this game with a bobble.
Over the middle, that led to an interception after Murray hit him in the hands with a dime. Um Now Marvin did snatch one. Out of the air, high pointing it for a touchdown that started the comeback. And it's exactly why we were talking about Marvin Harrison Jr. being one of the best collegiate players to be drafted.
where he was rightfully by Arizona.
So a lot of question after the game. to Kyler about Marvin Harrison Jr. You always say that, that you have the confidence in him no matter what. That seemed like a difficult moment to have the confidence in him in the first half after the interception. What in that moment gave you the ability to keep going back to him?
I need him. You know what I'm saying? He needs me, I need him. You know, this is a team sport. Um.
Four-quarter game, you know, and I understand, like. He's not coming out of the game. You know what I'm saying? I don't want him to come out of the game.
So we got to get this going. And that's really just what it is. You know, just conversations on the sideline, keeping his confidence up. And again, the other receivers and everybody around him. We all we all we're all in it together.
That's a good answer, by the way. That is a good answer. Because he's not going anywhere. I mean, he's Marvin Harrison Jr. I will say this, I'm not worried about him.
So, yeah, what I'm doing with Breer on a text chain and Don Weir, money manager to the stars, two Ohio State honks in my life. It's a bit. But it's a great pit. I did bench him last night. I did not play him.
A 66 yards and a score. Here's why I'm not worried about him.
Okay, he's supremely talented. You can see the talent. My God, is he a physical beast, right? You can also look in his eyes through that. It just seems like something.
You know what? My counsel to him would be with Tim Thibault when he came on the show to counsel Arch Manning. Just go back to the times when you just love football. Just. Try and channel that, okay?
Yeah. Trying to channel being a kid and how good you are and It's only a matter of time. That high point snatch was. Like grown-ass man material in the end zone. And his reaction afterward, man, he was because a weight was lifted off of him.
Of course, because he, I mean, that drop ball last week is. Was absurd. I saw this stat. First 20 games of his career, he's now played 20 games. Um His dad, Marvin Sr.
Had 1,026 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. through the first 20 games of Marvin Jr.'s career. Despite everything we're talking about. 1,027 yards and nine touchdowns. He's one yard better than his dad, same number of touchdowns as his dad, and we all know what happened with his dad.
Wow, that's cool.
Okay, I just hope for his sake that Kyler is like Peyton. Right. Which is, you know, a very tall order. Um Home for Tennessee at Indianapolis. That's going to be Daniel Jones versus Kyler Murray.
Home for Green Bay, then a bye at Dallas on a Monday night. At Seattle for a big-time game there. There are some winnable games here for them if they are. Anything like What we saw. Uh towards the end of the game.
Being there in San Francisco, having that win at New Orleans home for Carolina. are our opponents that they should beat, right? We'll see what happens with Arizona. They're talented enough to put together for Jonathan Gannon a winning season and then make some hay, but. The mistakes that you make.
You know, the drops. The not putting the ball in the the landing zone. Having Mac Jones wa march down the field on you at the end of a game. It'll cost you. Who?
Kyler and Marvin. Like, I remember at one point he dropped a pack and they just walked by each other. Like, like normally, you would see a QB and a wide receiver kind of engage. I didn't, unless I missed this. I didn't see any of that.
Yeah, and that's been a knock on Kyler. Leadership, body language. All that all those type of things. I don't know. I don't know, man.
Marvin, I don't know. As you know, I was ready to put him in the Hall of Fame as a sophomore.
Something just seems off. Dude, everyone was saying, you know, he was the top pick in the draft when he was a sophomore. Yeah. You know, but I I'm not concerned about him. at all.
Um even though I'm texting certain somebodies that So-called greatest. college receiver ever um Never one. The Big Ten Championship. See? Fetty in Italy, you're here on the Rich Island Show.
Let's take his phone call. Fetty. Good to chat with you again, Fetty. What's going on in Italy? Hi, um, everything is fine.
Um I just read that you are gonna be the The boys of the Broncos and Jets game. That's true. And I'm going to be there. And I was wondering if you all are going to be in London. We are going to send the show there.
There's plans to do it, but not for Jets Broncos, sir. Uh maybe the following yeah So going to be there on the Monday too.
So and I I'd love to meet you at the game, but Okay, I'll be the guy in the suit on the uh on the uh on the field. Um just make your way you you make your way uh as close as you can there and I'll I'll I'll come find you. You find me, I'll find you. How does that sound? I'll be the guy in the Broncos shirt with the Italian flag.
Ah, yes. Can't imagine there's going to be too many of those. Alfredi, that would be one of the things. What's the Broncos jersey you're going to be wearing? Uh mine is gonna be Kate and Manning.
My girlfriend has a bonics. Ah, nice.
Okay, I will look for the handsome couple wearing 18 and. 10. With the Italian flag. Very good. With the Italian flag.
Love it. Thank you, Sir Fetti in Italy. That's what's so great about the International Series, man. That is awesome. Did you hear that the NFL has announced a five-game over three-game stretch?
A five-game over a three-year stretch in Rio. That's cool.
So going back to Brazil, but uh little north of Sao Paulo. Uh Rio de Janeiro. Let's go. Maybe we'll get the invite this year. That's a good movie.
No, it's not. It's a movie with Rio in the title. My friend of mine was in there.
Okay. I mean, you could just go with Rio. Who is it? Who's your friend that was in that? Which friend?
Which friend isn't blame it on real? Because that's old, man. I know. I know. I know which friend.
Which friend? Demi Moore. To me, Moore is a friend of yours? That's the first time I've heard that. Are you serious?
Well, she was married to Ashton, Rich. Oh, now I'm putting two and two together. We were roommates, Rich. You and Demi Moore were roommates? Yeah, we all lived together.
You know this. No, I don't. Our ESPN Disney Plus family doesn't know this.
Okay. Very good. Michael Kane in that movie. But Mr. Mrs.
Eventual Mrs. Matt Williams was in that film as well. Look that one up. Forget the actress's name, I just remember her sitting in the wives section at the 2001 World Series Game 7, crying her eyes out in the eighth inning because they were about to lose the World Series to the Yankees. Yada, yada, yada.
The Yankees lose in the ninth inning. Michelle Johnson. She, Michelle Johnson. Michelle Johnson is happy. And then I go into the locker room, and Susie gets flipped to baseball with a New York Yankees' phone number on it.
Hey, Joe Bologna was in that room. Yeah. For me. Never knew that Blame It on Rio would be brought up here. I mean, you never know what I might say.
Do you know Michael Kaine? I don't wish. Me too. All right, let's take a look at it. Michael Payne.
Michael Payne. Michael Payne. Michael Payne. Okay, let's go to Larry and Albuquerque. What's up, Larry?
Larry. Hey, nice to be on your show, Rich. What's up?
Sometime listener.
Okay, great. Driving to Salt Lake City right now and listening to you. It helps a lot. Awesome. It keeps us awake and everything else.
Okay. Glad to hear it. Thanks, Larry. I was wondering if we can get any Ryder Cup updates. I haven't heard anything on the Ryder Cup today.
Okay. Thanks very much, Larry. Wishes our command. Do we have like a. Do we have Ryder Cup music?
Do we not? It's not a music. Just give us the, I guess, is it a breaking news or something like that? Oh, you were going with the birds. Oh, no, just go with the birds.
Go with the birds.
Okay. Alright, after the first, so we're doing four ball today. Um Europe is up three to one. It was an absolute ass kicking in the morning. Yeah.
On each side. That's what he means by four balls. That's what I mean by four ball. It's four balls. Not kidding.
Not black. He's so stupid. I swear to God. I never know. I'm like the true birds.
Oh, yeah. The king. That's what she said humorous, saying it's the birds making him laugh. After he says four balls. Wow.
All right. This is not the update Larry's looking forward to. John Robinson Seb Stracha are one up here in the afternoon session. The other two matches are even, but Europe has a 3-1 lead.
Okay, very good. Thank you very much. Everybody's a crowd. It looks beautiful out in New York today after the rain on Thursday. Beth Page is rocking.
It looks cool.
Some of the video that I saw during the commercial break is the European team was laughing on the first tee. of the four ball When the European fans that are there at Beth Page Black were chanting, is this a library? Because it was so quiet. They definitely have taken the home field advantage that was supposed to be going on. She's 3-1, though.
Here's the third thing: they're showing like Keegan Bradley looking so concerned, the Ryder Cup captain. Every year, every, well, every Ryder Cup, it's the Ryder Cup captain. Drives around with an earpiece and some system where the earpiece is connected to what looks like a walkie-talkie. Can you help me with this thing? Like, can we not get some sort of better?
It looks like it's It looks like Ray Floyd used the same system back in the 70s. I don't even know. Is it Rodicard Cat? That's an acceptable foldback. Thank you very much.
Oh, that's an IFB. Thank you.
So, did you know that's what IFB stood for? I don't, maybe not.
Well, whatever. He's got the earpiece in, and it's connected to, and he's just standing there. And everybody blames the Ryder Cup captains for like what happens. It's just like he picks the team, right? He picks the team.
He picks half the team. But but what is but he picks who plays with whom, right? Exactly. The match. Oh, and it's such a bad pairing.
Bad pairing. Why is it a bad pairing sometimes? Just the result? Are we playing the result or just guys don't play well with each other? Strengths and weaknesses of your teammates.
Like if you're playing in a four-ball situation, ma you know, you want a like a great driver of the ball with a great iron player.
So you want to really match things up like But these guys get to the Ryder Cup because they're great drivers and great iron players, right? They're generally the top 30 players in the world. The whole thing gets so parsed to the point where. Just play golf. Like, is it Keegan Bradley's fault that we're down 3-1?
No. No. Make putts. Make your putts. Make your shots.
Hit it on the green. Let's go. Give the shot. Give the shot. Yeah.
I mean, Brory and Tommy Fleetwood absolutely smoked Morakawa today. It was Keegan Bradley's fault, right? I guess. I don't know. None of this makes sense.
Just make Michael Jordan the captain. Like, it'd be way cooler. Wouldn't that be great? I think it'd be way better. And so Keegan Bradley can play.
Right, he's there. Mike is there. Just make him the captain. Just make him the captain. Go figure that.
Made him a captain. Whatever. Rory almost drove the green on one. Hey, you know whose fault that is? Keegan Bradley?
I never understand this Ryder Cup stuff, man. It has a little holier than thou buy something. You think so? You think? But it's fun.
It's great. It is fun. It's really cool. You're cheerful for these guys individually. Rory's one of my favorite players, but now I want him to just have the worst 18-holes straight.
Well, I need them to win because I'm going to London in two weeks. I need to walk around with my head held high. I can't sit around and start to, you know. explain away Keegan Bradley's decision making. All right.
It is about me. 844-204 Rich, number to Dow. Steve Young's going to join us. We're pushing what's more likely to hour number three. Fantastic.
And then Kevin Pollack's going to join us. I think Kevin likes one. Kevin's told me in the past he checks out our YouTube channel and what's more likely and stuff like that.
So it's fitting that we're going to play that when he's in our green room. Niner fan, also. He is that. He is that. That makes two in a row.
We had Dan Soda yesterday, Kevin Pollock today. And by the way, Steve Young's about to join us. Look at us. 844-204 Rich, number to Dowell. Here's Steve Young in a moment.
What is it that makes the all-new Hyundai Palisade Hybrid an incredible SUV? Is it the spacious interior that's comfy for the whole crew or the capability to go off-road? Maybe it's up to 600 plus miles of range. Is it the driver behind the wheel? What if it's all of that and more?
What is it then? The all-new Hyundai Palisade Hybrid, so much more than just another SUV. Visit HyundaiUSA.com or call 562-314-4603 for more details. That's 562-314-4603. The Rich Eisen Show Podcast.
Back on the rich eyes and show. They're on ESPN Radio presented by Progressive Insurance. Joining us here is Hall of Famer Steve Young. Let's everybody raise our level of play here. The classic man is here.
What's up, Steve? How are you, Steve? That's good. How are you, Steve Young? What's going on, man?
I'm doing good, buddy. How are you? I'm doing better for seeing you on the screen. What's your opinion so far of. quarterback play through the first three weeks of this season.
Steve. You mean the September preseason, right? That's what it is, right? Are we seeing the effects of a shortened preseason? Um yet for another season.
In the effort to make the game safer. in the last 10 years, it's essentially Reduced the amount of time coaches and players can be together. And so the sophistication goes down, and if free agency is as wide open as it's ever been, and they limit. And then obviously, when you can get into preseason, the true preseason in August, no one plays. And so really, you're just throwing a guy, you know, in April you throw, you know, 50 guys together by, or by June, and then you get a little.
you know, a couple of three day uh retreats and then you go play some ball. And so compared to And I don't want to be the guy, get off my lawn, but in the old days where you really spent the whole year with your coaches grinding through five years of tape. Yeah. And refining the aspects of your offense and the sophistication. And that's why, I mean, Tom Brady said it best when I saw him right at the end of his career.
He's like, you know, what's the difference? And he says, well, Um, you know, the flats are always open, the middle of the field's unpatrolled, and no one could touch me. You know, that's overstatement, of course. It's conflated, but You know, and so then football, you asked me about quarterback play. Um it's just Defense is much easier to get good at.
Than offense. Offense has much more technical parts of it, and it's. Uh tender, tedious work. And so the offense will always lag. That's why you see better offense towards the end of the year and better defense early.
And so, yeah.
So, what do I see so far?
Some I mean, the great teams are showing. And the really bad teams are showing. And then there's 25. teams in the middle that just like please make me two and two in October so I can You know, figure out who we are. Right.
That's what it looks like right now. And it appears to be with Daniel Jones off to a 3-0 start. Yet another quarterback. that needed six, seven years to potentially find the right spot. Or we can't already anoint him, if you will, the next Baker, next Goff, next maybe even Sam Darnold.
Here, Steve. Ah, Rich. Again, I just ha I mean, let's just talk about it for a second. Sure. Before the rule changes in the past, the old days.
I felt like there was... Five really great places for quarterbacks in the league. Yes. I think that it's expanded now because the great innovative minds of what I call the big four that when the rule changes for safety about eight, nine, nine years ago, leaned into the new space that was created by defenses not being able to launch their bodies at people. The Sean McVays, the Kyle Shanahans, the Andy Reids, and the Sean Paytons all leaned in.
And then you think about that tactical advantage that they had for a few years. And then what happened is their coaches, because of the way they coach, is kind of an abundant perspective. Like, I'll give you everything I got so you can go get a job and dominate.
So, what happens around the league is all those that coat those coaching trees flood. The league. And so the tactical advantage goes away because everyone's doing the same thing, but it's still not everybody. I think there's probably. 15 places that are awesome for quarterbacks.
Five are super awesome. And what you're seeing. is in the past There were so few places great for quarterbacks that a guy would come in, he'd get mauled, a rookie, high draft voice in a bad team, and he looks like he sucks, he's terrible, and they just, and you end up. They can't get back on the track. In today's game, there's more places.
Where quarterbacks can find out how good they are, which is the gift, right? It's like, we'll let you see how good you really are. And you're seeing the Sam Darnolds and the Mac Jones and the Daniel Jones find. homes where they can find out how good they are. And by definition, where they were wasn't allowing that.
That's just a fact. Steve Young here on the Rich Eisen Show. And then there's I guess somebody like Russell Wilson. Who's now watching Jackson Dart get the start? Just two starts after throwing for 450 yards, but that was.
you know, sandwiched in between two losses where things looked brutal. Your fellow Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez last night on Prime Video said Russ's played himself out of the hall of fame. Where do you stand on Russ as a quarterback right now and where he stands? Steve. Russ is I think for You know He was he was the the ri you know.
There's different ways to look at Russ, and some of it's how everyone feels about him, and then watching him play football. And is he genuine? Is he disingenuous? Is he, you know, all those kinds of things. And I just, I'm a believer in Russ.
I think he's been an amazing football player. And whether it's going to be a Hall of Fame or not, I'll leave that to the voters. But from my perspective, What he's what how he plays the game Is pretty efficient and pretty smart and pretty effective.
Now, can he do it all? No, you look at what Josh Allen does or Lamar Jackson or, you know, it's like these guys are just fully loaded. Superman. And so like if you want to compare him, like he doesn't have that, he's never had that. But what he gets out of what he has.
Yeah, I got to tip my cap to it. And now as he kind of, you know. you know, runs around the league. you run into places where it's not that great. And now Coach needs to save his job, so he's going to bench him and.
And so like, that's okay. And then, and Russ is Russ, whatever, what Tony said. What baffled me was in Denver. It baffled me. that for a full season Russ sent up no flares, no smoke signals.
that hey look. I'm struggling, but I'm still fine. I'm still me. And I think that's maybe what he's referring to. It's like I was.
I could not figure out that whole season what happened. To Russ Wilson. And why would it Why would it just devolve and why couldn't he? Let me know, just kind of between the two of us, secretly, as I watched him play: hey, it's not all, I got this figured out. And I think that's maybe what Tony's referring to.
Steve Young here on the Rich Eisen Show. What do you think about Herbert? Has he entered the chat here, elite quarterback, already there in your minds? Like what he's doing right now? He was a kept man.
He was in a place that wasn't great for quarterbacks. And he was getting in, and because he's so earnest and he wants to be great. That he was doing the Andrew Luck thing, just throwing his body around, trying to get something accomplished, you know, to be good enough. He knew. I could be elite.
I can be in the Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen conversation. And uh I just need some help. And I think Jim Harvaugh has given him some help. I think it's positive. And I think he's unleashed a little bit because you can see that Justin is now recognizing that my talent needs to threaten.
The line of scrimmage every play. I don't do it very often, but I need to threaten it. And he won games already this year with his legs, and he can do that. And that's the game today. That's the missing piece that he can now unleash.
He was threatening the line of scrimmage when he made one of the greatest throws you've ever seen last week. And so.
So I I'm a huge believer in Justin Herbert. I've said this many times. as a as a from an artist's perspective. From a throwing motion kind of appreciation, I think he has one of the most beautiful throwing motions in history.
So I'm not only a believer, I'm an admirer. And I think that Justin, there's no... There's no place he can't go if he has the proper help. And that's true for all great quarterbacks. You need the proper help.
And Jared Goff with the win on Monday night. I don't know if you saw this stat, Steve Young. He and Dan Campbell. Just surpassed you and Mooch for the second best win percentage in prime time. uh trailing pate manning and jim caldwell And I'm I'm wondering if you think the lions.
Why are you saddling us with the coaches? No. Yeah, like, oh, just tell them what's the tool. Why are you trying to bring me down? Oh, beautiful.
No, Steve, that made my day. It might even make game day morning on Sunday morning. I have a feeling we're going to mark the timecode here. You're right. My bad.
You, you alone. You stand alone in that regard.
So, so that was my way of getting into whether you think Goff and the Lions and Dan Campbell have shown. We got this thing with Johnny Morton, offensive coordinator here. Three weeks in, we're good. We're just like the same team over the last three years. Prolific on offense, smart all around.
We're still the Lions. You're kind of wondering right now on that. No, I thought that was a statement. I mean, early season, preseason, September, right? On Monday night, and going on the road.
I just thought it was a statement from because the good teams are good. I know the Ravens are still a very good team. I don't care what you say. And so, to me, those are two really good teams that are ready to play football in September. And I just, I thought that was expansive.
I thought it was. Unique. I thought it was innovative. I thought it was bold. I thought it was strong.
I mean, it was like all of it.
So, yeah, right now it feels without injury. Like block put them in the mix. Right in the mix. And then please tell me that if you get up by 17 in the championship game, that you kick a field goal. Just please tell me you'll do that.
I don't know, man. You never know. No, just play it. No, no, no. I need to know.
I refuse to watch unless you tell me that's going to be the case because I cannot watch. I cannot watch self-destruction again. I can't. I can't become a hubris. I can't see it happen again.
It's too painful.
Well, where do you stand on the Chiefs, too? Since the Ravens play the Chiefs, Steve, it looks like, I don't know, either they're missing Rice and Xavier Worthy, or the Chiefs are still once again. Fumbling for the light switch on offense. And they are still not yet putting it together with their all-world quarterback tight end. Combination, Steve.
Where do you stand on that subject? To me, it's all upfront. Like, if they're going to be at least above, at least average up front. if not above average. then all the rest of it is just Them working it out.
You watched it last year. They won a bunch of games when they could have lost. They could have been. I don't know who knows what they could have been. As long as they just get in, they just didn't need to get in the tournament.
And tell me that. that Patrick can be protected reasonably. Because that's kind of what matters. And then people getting healthy, of course, and all the rest of it, and getting the healthy needs. But I just, I don't know.
For me, until proven otherwise, the Chiefs feel like they figure it out even when it's not figure-outable. And when it shouldn't be, when it's like the odds against that are really high. And yet, here we go.
So look, they can't get Three and six. I mean, they just can't. That's just too hard. But you know, get right, you know, win some games, some tight games here, show them who you are. And get into the regular season and be okay.
But how would you grade their offensive line? And what would you say? Would you say it was average?
Well, what I would say is they have the highest paid center, highest paid right guard. They're hoping they got it right with Josh Simmons at the left tackle spot, the 11th different guy to start there in the Mahomes era. And I think, you know, they need to run it. That's what I think they need. They need to.
I know Andy. Yeah, you can't just win. You can't be Superman all the time. It's like what Josh Allen was trying to do. And now, all of a sudden, they run the ball.
And Josh Allen looks like amazing.
So we've seen that movie from them, Rich. And we saw that in 2021, kind of back three, four years ago, where it was like Superman every week. And it's like, no, you grind into the, you know, Clark Kent shows up way too much because you just, you can't do it that often. And so I agree with you, but they're a little desperate right now.
So let like the doing whatever it takes to get some games on some wins under your belt, fine. But in the end, they know. They know very well. I've talked to Andy about it. Like they know.
Extremely well that they can't ask Patrick to just run around, be Superman, and get all the way. They just can't do it.
So, in the few minutes I have left with you, I'd be remiss if I did not ask you, Steve Young, about the 49ers. 3-0, banged up everywhere. No kittle, no purdy, no Bosa now, no Iuk walking through that door anytime soon, and yet they have yet to lose a football game. They take on the Jaguars this weekend. How real are the 49ers or you just don't know?
It's impossible to know right now. But are they showing signs? Of a transitioning team where young players, rookies, are going to contribute. And they're going to, you know, by the end of the year, we're going to have fans wearing four new jerseys that they don't even, you know, they're just learning about now. And uh and somehow they just Stay gritty in those tight ball games and get on a roll with the tight ball games and win instead of last year losing most of them, win most of them.
and then get into the tournament and Figure out a way to get gritty again. Like, I just, they're not gonna, they're not the superpower. They're not the best roster in football like they were a couple years ago. Uh and now especially with Nick, Nick's a gut punch. That's a groin shot that You're not going to, you're doubled over for a little while, no matter what.
And then, in the biggest games of the year that are coming. Who's that guy that's going to close games down? And if it's Bryce Halden, okay, like that's what I mean. Like, new people need to become. uh you know nick bosa they need to become Debo and all the rest of it.
And so, and Brandon needs to get healthy.
So, it's like there's a lot of stuff. that's got to happen to get in the mix. But right now with the record, Like if you can get into a playoff game and, you know. Who knows what it would look like? In December.
Like I said, this is preseason and the NFL is so much faster. in development than they've ever been. That you can actually say, we'll throw a team together. We'll see you at Christmas, and we'll let you know. And I think right now, early returns are 3-0.
Awesome, because they all could have gone the other direction, and you're in a much worse spot.
So, right now, I'm a believer. Yet tend to have because you can't just keep getting hurt. And then last thing for you here, Steve, you know very well what it's like to replace a legend, to also use your legs when you need to and play with heart. Yeah, right. That's the setup for what goes through your mind when you watch Baker Mayfield play football these days.
Steve. I love Baker. I mean, the grittiness, and he throws the ball better than I thought. He's and it feels like he's One of those guys that found a space where You know, he got somebody that the clouds opened up and the sun came out and really helped the quarterback. And where he was was not.
You know, he's the perfect case for what I just gave you as a reason why he's thriving. And now, what's happening is he's growing. There's even when you get a lot of help. You still have to go through a thousand filters and hurdles to be good or great. And a lot of it is understanding that who you are.
What can I do? How can I accentuate the things that I'm really good at? And how can I diminish the things that I'm not that great at or get better at? And it feels like Baker's on a quest. And it feels like every time I see him, he's better than I saw him last time.
And I love that. I love that's how it. That's how you get there. And um and that's the That's the beauty of being in a place where It's, you know, for quarterbacks, a good spot. And now let's see how good you can get.
And Baker's like, okay. I'm willing to ask the question and go into like jump into the void. And say, how good am I? And have the humility and the vulnerability to recognize that maybe I'm not as good as I thought I was, but I'm gonna get better. I love the Baker Mayfield story, and I'm in.
I'm in. And they're taking on the Eagles in a big game. I got. One last one for you. I lied.
I did a top 10 list earlier this week in advance of Micah going back to Dallas about revenge games. One of them that I put on was Montana. Taking on you guys and the 49ers in Kansas City. It's got to be number one. I mean, it was just insane.
What was that like from your perspective and what Dallas might be dealing with this weekend? It was nutty. It was like for a regular season game, it was like. I don't know. The Battle of the Bulge, man, it was like, it was crazy.
It was. Like the emo like it was crazy and uh then it was over. And you know, I don't want to rest the season, and like, that's one thing about regular season revenge games or whatever else. It's like, It's ins it's kind of an insane moment in the regular season, but uh then you then you just go on. Yeah, I mean five weeks later, another revenge game that I uh put on the list was Deon back in Atlanta.
And he was high-stepping from like the 30-yard line, pick six and Jeff George, you know. I love that. Like, that was awesome. That moment right there. Those colors, he screwed up.
I mean, that was the colors that Lee looked best in. I don't know what he was thinking. I know. He did sort of go around the league winning championships wherever he was. He was all that, though, bro.
Do not sleep on Deion Sanders and his talent. Like, it was different. Even though I said like some people are just different, he was freaking different. Yeah. Well, I mean, in that season, you only lost three times, winning it all, having the monkey removed from your back in that year, but it did start.
I guess in week two with that game against Montana and You know, I'm just wondering what you think the Cowboys are going to be dealing with on Sunday night with Micah coming in the building, knowing what it's like to play a game like that in the regular season, Steve. I love the idea of a revenge game, but you have to have the emotion for revenge. Like Sure, like you think it's a revenge game. I think it's a revenge game. I'm not sure the Cowboys think it's a revenge game.
Like, I'm not sure that they even have the. Wherewithal to even have a revenge game. Like, I'm just worried that. Like the core fundamental ability to just like Have a locker room that's empowered, a coach that can fire people and walk in and own the room. Like stuff that just hasn't happened for so long has just debilitated this team to a point where.
I just I don't know that they have. The Hutzpa. to have a revenge game. You know, Steve, you're the man. Thanks for the time.

Wow. I will take all of that. What's on your mind, sir? The New York Giant. I was born into a New York Giants family.
Okay. when they unceremoniously fired Tom Coughlin, We have gone downhill since. coaching. I don't even know what Joe Judge was. Don't let's just forget about him.
because that's just trauma inducing to think about that. what I think the Giants need to do. I hope the kid Jackson dart is good. I think Brian Dayball is a better coordinator than he is a head coach. And I think the GM is better talent evaluators and talent Retainer looking at Xavier McKinney, Daniel Jones, and Saquon Barkley going on to do what they did.
It's hard to stomach. I think we need the clean house as far as the head coaching. coaching staff. and the upper office We hire Lewis Riddick. As the GM, Brian Flores as the head.
Interesting, Khalil. Appreciate the two cents, your kind words, and your very eloquent way of putting things as to why this needs to work. For Brian Dayball right now and Joe Shane, like the rubber is meeting the road, as I mentioned. And Jackson Dart, according to Ian Rappaport, as he reported on the Prime Video broadcast last night. There was a 10-hour meeting on Tuesday.
Ooh. With Jackson Dart. 10 hours. Stand out for coffee and donuts like midnight run. You know what I mean?
Um and um And then this uh sound bite from today. On Jackson Dart and taking his swagger and how it can translate into. performance led to this answer from Brian Dable. No, he's he's the same guy every day. He's got a good personality.
He's outgoing. He's a good communicator. You know, he's a jokester at times. But when it comes to football, he's he's all business, you know, in terms of his preparation. Uh again he's Calls me late at night last night and whatever.
about red zone. uh where they got it. And it's it's pretty late. I've said, Get some sleep, we'll we'll So hit it in the morning. But he's He's on and it's all football for him.
Get some sleep. We'll hit it in the morning. I mean, yeah, got to get your rest because guess who's coming to town? That Charger defense is no joke. And if he performs well here, And starts to Get things moving in the right direction despite an all-enforced start.
Then they go to New Orleans. And if he comes home. and takes care of business. against the Philadelphia Eagles. Then now you're starting.
Now you're off to a start. 'Kay. Like again. These are, we're all looking at these and like, these are tough games for a rookie, but all he's got to do is win one or two of them. And now you're beginning to feel like this is real.
And if Scatterboo can just see what he rams into, that would be fine for me. I just don't lower your head, man. This is not. College I love the way he plays, but he frightens the hell out of me the way he's running right now. And I just want him to.
Do the Cam Scataboo thing. Jackson Dart, do the Jackson Dart thing. Offensive line, let's blow open some holes for Scataboo. Let's protect Dart so he can find Malik neighbors. And this is what we're talking about.
And let the defense start to. Assert itself, the Giants have the formula there. It's there. It's there. Young studs on offense creating excitement and points, and the defense creating pressure on the other offense.
to try and keep up or come up with a big score. Because the Giants just did. It's there. It's a winning formula. Can they do it?
And starting 0-3 is not helpful. And doing against the Chargers first. Not great. But is there I I don't think I'm being overly optimistic. It's there.
All you gotta do is just buddy. Boy, if you beat the Eagles in Giants Stadium or pardon me, MetLife for the Giants fans. Yeah. No, that's the good stuff, and that's what they're looking for. That's what they need.
The Rich Eisen Show Podcast. Mm-hmm.
