The rule in the NFL I hate the most. This rule is a bad rule. It's Higgins, he fumbles into the end zone. The competition committee has looked at it. It's a touchback.
I hate this rule that you fumble the ball through the end zone and the defense is the one that benefits. The Rich Eisen Show. I'm just pissed. I can't stand this rule. Earlier on the show, host of Peacock's Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio.
Legendary NBC Sports Broadcaster, Al Michaels. Coming up. Chiefs quarterback Chad Henney. And now. Yeah.
Sure. Hour number three of the Rich Eisen Show on the air here, the day after the divisional playoff weekend. It is Martin Luther King Day, MLK Day. And the NBA has a ton of games going on. The Miami Heat game has been delayed by five hours.
I've been reading the tip off of so that they, according to the NBA and all the reports, that they need to get more COVID tests in. That's the way we're. We're rolling here, but it's the I guess would you say it's the quarter post point? Normally, it's might right around, you know, mid-season in a way. The season started doesn't.
On uh Christmas Day, right around that week. Most teams have played 13 or 14 games. It's a 72-game season, so we're probably at the 20%. Right.
So, yeah, the Miami Heat game against Detroit has been pushed to 8 Eastern tonight so that the Pistons and the Heat could get more COVID tests in. The Knicks and the Orlando Magic are playing right now. Big game tonight. Bucks Nets. Bucks Nets.
Harder. I mean. James, did James Harden look thinner to you? I mean, I'm not sure. I'm pictured the side-by-side that went around.
Him and his final game in Houston. Did he have like a my pillow underneath his jersey or something like that? Honestly, because he did. He's like Eddie Murphy in the nutty professor. He did, I know.
The clumps. It was crazy. And they bawled out. Again, it's just. You know, the only thing I can compare it to is: I've mentioned this before, and I would say it even if he was here or on the phone.
Um You know, back when I was on Sports Center, the management team did not want you to have facial hair. It was kind of like Steinbrenner.
Okay, they didn't want you to have a facial hair, didn't want you to have a beard, didn't want you to have anything like that. And Olbermann would like grow facial hair overnight out of spite. Like, literally, I'll show you. Here I show up. And it would be like Evil Keith would be doing Sports Center, the goatee and everything.
And it's just like, where the hell did that come from? I mean, Hardin. Showed up. Could he lose weight out of spite? I mean, I don't.
It looked like he lost 30 pounds in like four days. Like a wrestler, right? To get weight. Unless, I don't know, are the Drazen Petrovich New Jersey Nets era jerseys that they wore over the weekend? Are they slimming?
Are they slimming? The crazy blue neon jerseys that he was wearing with Houston going out the door? Does that. I don't know, man. It's weird.
Honestly, like he looked like the Harden of Old and in Houston. He looked like uh Philip Seymour Hoffman in boogey nights. Right? I'm gonna look at my car. Accurate.
Nice, nice. There we go. Has Kyrie shown up yet? Is Kyrie anyway? Oh, Kyrie's out tonight.
Okay.
So it looks like his debut is either going to be Wednesday or Friday. That Media Zoom. That he's probably never going to do would be so great. He is not going to do it. That would be so great.
Kyrie, where you been? What you been up to? You happy? You good? Telling you, man, every...
Every possession they can make, they can get right now is crucial. But there we go.
So tonight. Harden and Durant. Taking on Giannis and the Bucs, right? Yeah, big game. Amazing.
And then I cap Lakers, Warriors. Then I cap.
Okay.
Amazing. Hey, let's talk about this a little bit before we get to your news update. Chad Henney of the Chiefs coming in. One of the most exciting plays of the playoffs.
So far. In the NFL, would be what?
Well give me give me give me just like off the top of your head. I'll give you one. I'll give you one. Thanks, Rich. Most of you.
You got one? Literally one play. got me off the couch like, whoa. Got me off the couch. I think I know.
I screamed out loud. From my couch On the Saturday night of wild card, of super wild card weekends, super Taylor Haneki. From the middle of the pocket. Buccaneers all around him, buzzing all around. Looks like he's about to get sacked.
No, Taylor Heineke escapes. And he leaps for the pylon and hits it with the football touchdown. I'm like, whoa! Mm. Thank goodness.
Thank goodness for Taylor Heineke. It hit the pylon and didn't come out of his hands and roll through the back of the end zone because the defense that was bending and breaking for Tampa Bay would have been bailed out. That's what it is. It's called a bailout. It's a bailout.
It's a bailout because if Taylor Heineke is reaching for that pylon and it gets knocked out right before the pylon goes right out of bounds, guess what? Taylor Heineke gets the ball. You get to keep the ball if it's out at the one inch line. But if it's three more inches on the other side of the pie line, you do not get to keep it because it's such a precious. Of NFL Real Estate.
Go ahead and fumble it out of bounds anywhere you want, offense, because you get the ball back. You get the ball back. If it's at the end of a half, the end of a game, you cannot get it out, get it from where it rolls out of bounds. You have to get it from where you fumbled it. Uh not if it Gets knocked out in the field of play and happens to roll the wrong way and then out of bounds, out of bounds.
Then the defense that is on its heels, the defense that has. No standing. In this drive. Because the other team is right on the precipice of scoring. Guess what?
You get a football. You get a football. You get a possession. You get offense. Come on back out.
Come on back out. Offense that just drove the field. I'm so sorry because if the ball had rolled out a few inches towards you. You still have the ball. Stupid?
As Rule worse rule in football. There's nothing that comes anywhere close. SAR. It is an SAR, stupid ass rule. And you can't explain it.
You can't explain it. You can't explain it. Again, they fixed the catch rule because Nickelodeon was able to explain to five, six, seven-year-olds what it catches. Try and explain that to somebody.
So, wait a minute. You get to keep the ball if it rolls out. Anywhere between the pylons out of bounds, but once it's beyond the pylon and out of bounds, you don't get to keep it. Why?
Well, it's the end zone. That's the most precious territory on the field. That's why you get six points for getting in there. Oh, oh, okay.
Now it makes sense. What? I'm a 54-year-old and I can't understand that. Why is that so hard to understand? What?
It's terrible. Why don't you get the ball with it? Why don't you get the ball back where you fumble it? If you want to make it a penalty, because it's such precious territory, and by the way, penalizing, penalizing. With a stupid ass rule.
people who are going all out. Trying to score get you off the couch like Taylor Heineke. No, don't do that. Don't do that. You might fumble it.
Don't be aggressive. Let's take aggressivity out of the most aggressive sport we have. Stupid ass rule on every possible way. No, no, no, no, no. Don't try and get me off the couch.
You might fumble it because if you fumble it here, you can still get the ball. You fumble it there, just right there, or where? Just a few inches in front? Yeah. If you fumble it there, you lose the ball.
And the defense that has no bailout, no bailout, gets bailed out. Why not, if you want to make it a penalty, why not just say, okay, if that was on a third-down play. Let's just use Richard Higgins, for instance, okay? He gets a first down in that play, right? He's a first down.
Correct? All right. Let's say it's a third down play and you fumble it through. Put the ball in the 15-yard line and say it's now. first and goal or third and goal.
from that spot. You fumble it, go through the end zone. Guess what? You lose 15 yards. You don't get it right there.
You lose 15 yards. So now, third and goal from 15, or first in goal from 15.
So a team that funnels it through still has a chance to maybe score a touchdown. If it's third in goal and third down, well, then guess what?
Now you can only get a field goal. Potentially out of it. But you get to keep the football. Do something. It's so stupid.
Do something. Don't fumble. No, no, no. Don't sit here. Why, when someone does something stupid, it's the rules' fault and not the person for doing the stupid thing.
Because in this instance, Your Argument, and I knew you were going to make it, makes no sense because the fumble was illegally caused yesterday, Chris. Two guys diving and their helmets collide. That is a happenstance of the sport of football. That's true about the helmet. The guy who hit Higgins.
Had his helmet down. He did not see what he hit. By rule, that is a penalty.
So, in this case, the two things I rail against happened on the same play.
So if you let me fix it. That should have been reviewable. Last two minutes, Al Riveron should have buzzed in or wherever the hell it happened. The Browns could have thrown the challenge flag. That should be a 15-yard penalty.
First down, Cleveland.
Now, what it had been from the spot of the fumble? Or would it have been it would have been no, it would have been from the the spot of the play 15 yards first down Cleveland. Wipe out the play. You get to 15 yards. And then forget about fumbling through the end zone anymore.
Stupid play. You can't say don't fumble the ball. He wasn't going for it and then losing it because he's reaching for it. He lost it because somebody came in with the crown of his helmet and hit him. He lost it because he dove for the pylon.
Don't dive. Why?
Belichick teaches his players. The McCordys tweeted it out yesterday. Oh, I know that. I know that. Dive.
It's a fantastic dive. That's a horrible dive.
So you don't want, so okay, somebody who loves the sport is a damn thing. You want to do something stupid, and then when the bad thing happens, blame the rule because you did stupid. Don't do stupid. Don't do stupid. You say you're stupid.
That's what I'm saying. Don't do stupid. These guys are going 100 miles per hour, right? They're competitive. No, but I understand what you're saying, and I appreciate what you're saying too, Chris.
Is that you could still be competitive, but play smart competitive football because certain teams don't do it and other teams do. And I say. I don't care. I know it's tough to have an argument with somebody who says, I don't care about your well-thought-out point. because this rule book is a stupid rule.
And I will never be convinced otherwise. And here's the other thing. And that's it. Every single thing that happens in the league favors the offense. Every single one.
Every single one. Why can't you just let the defense have this one? Because it doesn't deserve they don't deserve it. Why?
Because you can't even tell me why it's the rule in the first place. Why is it the rule? Why is driving 55 miles an hour the speed limit?
Well, I gotta be safe. Safe. Yeah, it's safety. I will never be convinced otherwise. The two things, I couldn't believe it.
And by the way. The number of people That texted me. You were first. Congratulations. I was first.
Yes, you were. Thank you. Kurt Warner was second on a game day morning.
Okay, Ian Rappaport tweeted me. Peter King. Texted me, all that stuff. Do you know who called me? Who?
Al Riveron, the head of NFL Refs. Because he knew. He called me in between the games. As soon as the Kansas City Browns game was over, he didn't do it in the middle of it. He called me.
He called me after, there's your rule. Yeah. There's your rule, says the head of NFL Refs. He knows how stupid I think it is. But he has come here before in studio.
I know he's explained to me why it is and why it will never get changed. And I don't care, is what I'm saying. I don't care. But that's not a good argument. Over and over.
And over again. by one of Al's predecessors about the tuck rule. I was told about that over and over and over again. By Mike Pereira. About the tuck rule being important because it removes the gray area between when somebody is considered throwing it.
and running it. And I always responded to Mike. that the concept of about to throw it and then bring it down. is the actual line of demarcation. That's the problem.
When you say, I am throwing, but I'm bringing it down to run it. Is the clear intention of no longer intending to throw. You don't need to have this motion as the gray area, as some sort of transition period between throwing and running. This whole bringing it down should not be a transition period. It's actually.
The line that you've crossed. It's not a gray area that you, with this stupid ass rule, are putting in. No, no, no, is all I was told. And guess what? I was right all but these two things are not the same are because I'm fully in my gut.
Knowing I'm right. And the last time I felt like this was the catch rule, that got changed. And then before that was the tuck rule, that got changed. What I'm saying is right now, you think I'm two for three, but I'm hitting a thousand. Or you just got shown up by the host.
No, I haven't shown him up because there's a ton of people like him who also think. Die Hard is a Christmas movie, okay? And this is just the sports version of that. And that there's tons of people who do believe what Chris is saying. He's not saying like he's got a tinfoil hat on his head.
And I know people look at me like I've got the tinfoil hat on my head. All I know is that I've been down this road before about a rule, and I am hitting three for three in one day. One day, I hope I'm happy. One day, if it happens, I hope I'm not. Caj Brockman at either the high school level or college level, as Syracuse is back on top, or the Patriots turn into Caj Brockman.
He is going to, without care or concern, reach out for that pylon. And score for For dear old dad and his team, and you're going to be, Rich was right. Oh, because I'm going to teach him not to die for the pylon. Yeah. My point is the rule will have been changed by that crisis.
Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it has to be changed. Change the way you behave. No. See, that's what sheep say. I'm a I'm a lion.
I'm a lion. I'm a lion. I look at things and say not. about why not. Why not now is what I'm saying.
Yep. Why do I get pulled over for speeding? Change the speed limit. No, or don't speed. That's not it.
That's not it. Bro, to use the argument, like you're going 100 miles per hour out there. You're under the speed. Why do other teams not do this? Everybody.
That's no, a lot of teams do it. Derek Carr keeps doing it. to his detriment. I've lost track on how many times he's fumbled through the end zone. It happens.
It keeps happening. And every single time I happen, it happens. I say, err on the side of allowing the aggressive play in football. Do it. Do it.
No, and again, following the league is gone. Yesterday, Higgins could have not reached for the pylon and still gotten the ball dislodged because somebody was coming at him illegally. That's my point. And it should not be if it had rolled to the left. Balls out.
If it had rolled to the right, Browns keep the ball. That's why the ball is obviously in front of them and then out of bounds. Stupid ass rule. Don't fumble. Stupid ass rule.
I had to get the last word. Die Hard is a Christmas woman. Don't get me started, Christopher. You are. Yeah.
Let's take one quick call. You'll do your news after, Chad Henney. Rick in South Carolina, you're on the Rich His and Show. What's up, Rick? Oh, not much, Rich.
Enjoy your show. Thank you, sir. Enjoy all your guests. You always do a great job having a great lineup of guests. Much appreciated.
That's your rule. Um They're never going to change this rule. The this rule goes right to the basis of the DNA of the game. It was a spin-off of rugby. You've got a feel that's 120 yards long.
Fifty-three to Burn yours wise. And at each end you got 10 yards, which is each team's Home. The object is to get that old skin Uh pig skin is bladder. You know, down in place it and touch it down into the opponent's Home. If you don't do that, you funnel it through the home, the home gets it.
Oh.
So it it it really goes right to the DNA of the game. Fumble through the home, and so the home gets it. I mean, like, it's not a casino, you know what I mean? You haven't completed the task of touching it down in their. No, I understand that, but if I haven't completed the task anywhere in the 100, I guess, neutral area, I get the ball back.
Why does the home get it if it fumbles it out of that? territory. Why?
Because 'Cause it's the home territory, is what you're saying. Yeah. You erred before you got there. Mm-hmm. See, no, I appreciate it.
Hey, please keep calling back. Keep calling back. I love that history lesson. And it's a very good, by the way. That's a great way to describe it to children too.
That sounds like you know I've Who lives under the sea, right? If this is if SpongeBob has this place under the sea. What the problem? No, but it's a good way to describe it. My point is that why is the home territory The spot where if you fumble out of bounds, the home gets it.
Right.
You didn't complete the task when you fumble it out at the one inch line, but you got it there. I still don't get it. Ken in Kokomo, Indiana. We'll take your call and then we'll take a break. What's going on, Ken?
Hi, Reg, thanks for taking the call. Let me add something to the discussion, if I may. You may. DK Metcalf. Earlier in the season, didn't he have a ball punched out of his possession before he got to the goal line by one of the Dallas Cowboys?
Right.
You want to give the Seahawks the ball back in that situation? Yes, I do. Oh, Rich, no. That's stupidity on DK's file. No, no, I understand that, but I have to be consistent here.
Just because he punches it out and it goes out of the back of the end zone, if it gets punched out at like the 10-yard line, the ball's free and loose. You know what I mean? Like, so just because it goes out of the end zone, it makes no sense to me. And I'm saying, like, you know, sure, he gets the ball punched out at the one-yard line and it should be free, but it goes out of the back of the end zone. How come it goes direct, it's automatically lost by the offense?
Because when you're driving toward the end zone. And you finally put the ball in the end zone, shouldn't the burden of responsibility of completing the play and getting six points fall on the offense? If they fail to do so, The defense should get the ball. The ah uh Like I said, I still look, Ken, I guess you're taking the Brockman point of view. And like I said, and there's one other thing, Rich, if I may, quickly.
Please. in basketball and soc soccer. The ball crosses the sideline. And the offense loses the ball altogether. You want to do something revolutionary?
Say if if the offense fumbles the ball out of out of bounds, they lose the ball in in the in the field of play too. Cool, that would be aggressive. Look at Canon Kokomo, everybody. Can and Kokomo, thanks for the call. A lot of food for thought.
Should we get Al Riveron on the show tomorrow?
Well, yes, because I fear we need. Another the opposing point of view, I think. He taunted me. I need to flag him for 15 yards, is basically what I'm saying. Because he called you?
He taunted me. I need to get his permission to play his voicemail. Oh, he left you a voicemail. Yes. Oh, you didn't answer?
No, I was running around. Oh, I thought you answered. I didn't have my phone on me. No, no, no, no. No.
Oh, he left you a voice. He left me a voicemail. Even better, yes. He said to get permission. Like, it seemed like he was joyous, like, joyful.
That's great. I love that. But I'm telling you, I'm in his kitchen, is what I'm saying. Let's take a break, Chad Henney, of the Kansas City Chiefs when we come back. What a day it was for him.

zone. Restrictions apply. I want to play celebrity true or false with you, Terry Cruz, with some stuff from some previous interviews of yours and on IMDb pages and stuff. I want to know what's true and what's not. True or false, Terry Cruz, your first job was as a sketch artist for a local news station in the 80s.
True or false? That is true. I started sketching for the station and they put me on the worst murder case in Flint, Michigan history. I was in the courtroom. I did the courtroom sketches.
Did you see the sketch artist from the Deflate Gate case? No, with the Tom Brady. Oh my God. No. Come on now.
Well, he probably was hungry. You know, he was hangry. Another one you worked on is set as a bodyguard for Cube before he casts you on Friday afternoon. Is that a true story?
Now that's true, but the bodyguard sounds sexy.
Okay, it was security guard. Like, I had a t-shirt with a flashlight. Bodyguard sounds like suits and all that. No, no, no. It was more like I was like watching Cube's car.
He's like, hey, man, make sure my car stays there. I'm like, yes, sir. Yes, sir. And I had my batteries, but this thing, I made sure all my little like polo shirts were really tied up good on their schmedium, yeah. And they were like, yeah, they were schmedium.
All schmedium shirts. And they were like, oh, I look so amazing. And then he cast you? Then he put you in? And then he put me in Friday after the next.
What was your role in training day? Oh, I was an unaccredited gang member. That was it. I was walked on the set to watch Denzel work, and the director, Antoine Fouquis, said, Hey, man. You know what?
Put you in this movie, you down. I was like, Okay, okay.
So he said, Take your shirt off. I took my shirt off, and I was the guy on the roof that was uh flipping pigeons and the whole thing as Denzel came down. You just walked on the set to see Denzel work. I had a friend who was like a location guy doing security. Yeah, and he was like, Man, you wanna watch Denzel tonight?
I was like, Yep. See, this is the thing: a lot of your success just comes from proximity. You know what I mean? You can be broke anywhere. I decided to be broke in LA.
You know what I'm saying? And a lot of great things happen. Problem Terry Cruzman. Just have to be broke in LA and a lot of great things happen. Right.
Yes. The office right here on Peacock, everybody. You can check it out. My son is, by the way, he's going crazy watching Peacock now. That has nothing to do with anything.

Yeah, nice. Then you say it by the bell and I'm walking through and I'm like, oh my god. There's Slater.
So he's on it. Oh yeah. Oh that's great. Oh yeah. Yeah, man.
Yeah. For sure. I'll have to check that out.
So he's been he's binge watching the uh the news Say by the Bell. Right now on Peacock. By the way, my son's viewership is in terms of all the Peacock executives watching me right now. My son's viewership, free of charge. As a speaker.
Yes. Back here on the Rich Eisen Show, 844-204-Rich. Number to Dal here on the show. We'll take some more of your phone calls in a second. Chris Brockman's got some news updates coming up.
But the man of the hour in Kansas City is Chad Henney. And boy, what a game he had yesterday. Is he on the phone line right now, Chris? Yes, he is. And here he is joining us here on the Rich Eisen Show in his 11th season in the national.
Football League getting his first career playoff snaps and boy. Were they important ones? The man who helped the Chiefs to get back to the AFC championship game for the third straight year, he is Chad Henney. How are you, Chad? Great.
How are you doing, Rich? I am doing better for talking to you. What was Sunday like for you? What was that like? I mean, definitely a moment to remember.
Obviously, you never want those circumstances to happen with Patrick, but that's why I'm here. You stay prepared for these moments and you just put your best foot out there and make some plays If you can, and hopefully, you come out victorious. How do you stay ready for something like that, Chad? How I mean, how does that work? Yeah, I mean, I think over the years, I mean, I just push myself to stimulate myself each and every week, try to find an edge and study the game plan like you're a starter each and every week and never take a back seat.
you know, push Patrick. If I see something, help him out. Uh but at the same time, Uh just clue into my uh keys and everything on their defense that I can go out there and attack uh once I have an opportunity. Did you see Patrick get up looking woozy uh and know that, okay, this is it? Is that how you learned?
You were going in? Yeah, I mean, I felt like he got the first down.
So I was looking, I was like, all right, we're good. And then when he kind of buckled. I was like, oh man. And then they're like, all right, get your helmet. Just get out there, get warmed up, and you're in.
It's a quick decision, and there's not a lot of thinking that goes into it. You just get out there, and you hopefully get in there and put some points on the board. And then, of all moments for you to be put in, I mean, this is. Forget about playoffs and all that stuff. Obviously, that's one thing, but.
A short yardage must-have situation, and then they call for you to flip it. I mean, what did you think of when the play call came in? Yeah. I mean, uh, you know, there's a couple of short yarders plays that we have each and every week and Same thing, you know, you just You study those plays, you know the plays uh by heart, and you know when they come in there, you you just execute them to the best of your ability. confident in our call there.
And uh you know we Made a great play there. No, I know that, but I mean, walk me through what goes in your head. Obviously, you know the plays. But again, it's like, okay, you're going to get your feet wet right away with a play like that. Yep.
I think the first thing is getting the snap. You go in there, you fumble the snap, you look like a dip. Yeah. You know, you can't. Can't really go out there and you know put your best foot forward there.
But first of all, get the snap, and second of all, you know, look the pitch in, make sure the pitch gets to the running back. And, you know. I've done a couple of those in my career and so it's been a while, but Um, you know, just make the best of it. No, I Chad, look, I know you are a veteran, you're prepared. Look, I watched you play your first snap at in college.
You know, I've been following you forever and a day.
So I know you're you're ready for it. But then again, I mean, you're thrown in it. And then the play does have a certain aspect of trickiness to it. And I just thought that that that was we're all talking about, obviously, the the fourth down play call to seal the deal, but the way it started, I c has kind of gotten lost in it, is all I'm kinda saying. Yeah.
Yeah, absolutely. And uh, you know, at the same thing is just, you know, go out there, you know, look to pitch in, get snap. And Let the other guys do the work for you. And then, of course, you know, Chad Henney here on the Rich Eisen show, fresh off of the win over the Cleveland Browns yesterday in Arrowhead. Where did the wheels come from, Chad?
Did not know you had that in you in that third and long to set up the fourth and short to seal the deal. Where'd the wheels come from? Yeah, well. you know. When I was a chubby little guy in Miami and uh Michigan going through, I was I was actually a track athlete in high school.
I'm not gonna say I'm the fastest guy, but um You know, I've slimmed down a little bit over the years and stayed in shape. And when the opportunity comes, I can still move a little bit. I'm not gonna say I'm the greatest out there, but. When the time's needed, I can put my head down and run. Are you saying you're on the CH4 system?
Is that what you're saying, Chad? You're on the CH4 system? I don't know about that. I mean, I was on the four by one in high school and we had a pretty good team and I always had it in me. I like I said, I'm not the fastest person, but if time's needed, just like you see Matt Ryan out there, he's running around too.
We're in the same draft class. You know, some of us old guys can still run around a little bit.
Okay.
You cracked five of the forty at the Kanban, Chad. That's a big thing to do back in certainly in the uh in the late aughts. Nobody was really doing that sort of thing at the Kanban. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, good, uh, I don't know what I ran, but definitely cracked the five.
I think Jiguan might have ran a little faster than me. But not going to say anything about that.
Well, you know what? He did uh wind up being number one overall. He b wound up being a number one uh first overall pick for the uh for the um The Dolphins back in the day.
So let's walk through that fourth-down call when it came in. Walk me through your mindset, getting that call to seal the deal and the execution of it. Chad. Yeah, so we talk about all our fourth down plays on Saturday night. Patrick has his, I have mine, and then we kind of You know, bring it together with the coaches, and if they like it, you know, we make those calls.
And that was one of our fourth and one calls, the one that I liked. and uh what the coaches liked.
So felt very confident in it. Luckily, they were in man coverage, and Tyreek ran a heck of a route real quick and just had to put the ball. in a slot for him to get the first down. And then how did that feel to you? Seriously, Chad, I mean this has been a long time coming for you to have an opportunity like this with a team like this in a moment like this and you come through.
What is it like for you, Chad Henney? Seriously.
Well, I mean, it meant the world. I mean, all the opportunities that this team has given me, it was taking me to a Super Bowl, won the Super Bowl last year, brought me in in twenty eighteen. And uh, you know, it was just great for them to give me something and I can give them something back. Chad Henney, Chiefs quarterback here on the Rich Island Show. Few more minutes left with him here.
So, what is it like? Walk me through what it's like to be in the. quarterback room with Mahomes, and you say your role as support For a kid who's gotten so much thrown at him and him being so successful at it, Um what walked me through the process put me as a fly on that wall. Chad, for you. Yeah, yeah, I mean, which is great.
You know, in twenty eighteen, it's Patrick's first year starting officially throughout. And coming in, obviously, everybody knows how talented he is. uh arm mobility, creating plays. But a lot of things that people don't understand is attention to detail. and his preparation, his note-taking is exceptional.
Uh the way he looks at the fi uh at the film. Um, you know, and he's a quick learner. he sees something on film and he can, you know, repeat it and just regurgitate it in his mind so quickly. It's almost like a photographic memory, and he's been great. And he's stayed the same since I've been here day one.
And he's only gotten better and he'll continue to keep getting better. How is he right now as you and I are chatting? Chat, Henny. Yeah, I mean, I saw him this morning and he's in good spirits. Obviously, he'll go through all the protocols and we'll see what happens in the next couple of days.
But he's in good spirits, and we're hopeful for him. Give me a good Andy Reid story. What's your favorite Andy Reid story?
Sorry, since being around him. Chad, give me one. I don't know. I mean, I He's just So I mean, he's very humble. He appreciates everybody around him.
but he's very humorous. you know, his his jokes that he can spit out. I think the best thing about him is he creates these little names for everybody. And uh you know one would be You know, Claude A running back saying, you know, he's mighty mouthed. And he comes up with these descriptions of people and.
Things and it's just hilarious when he comes out. He'll just pull it out and be like, hey, Mighty Mouse. And you never heard it. And you're like, who the heck is Mighty Mouse? He's like, yeah, you, Clyde.
And then you think you look at Clyde, and he does look kind of like a mouse. And he just keeps the air, you know. thin and you know healthy and it's just It's fun to be around because he's so funny and he's easy to talk to. And does he have a name for you? Do you have an Andy Reid name for you?
I don't know. I mean, he's just been calling me the old man the last couple of years and stuff. Old man, but uh he hasn't really come up with a lot with me. Uh, you know, our other running back. Darwin Thompson, he calls him termite.
Uh so he's always Making jokes about chopping on wood, but there's a lot of guys out there. It's funny. All right, before I let you go, Chad, let's have a moment for us here. Chad? Do you know do you know um who who took victory knees yesterday in playoff games, Chad?
Do you know the two quarterbacks who took victory news yesterday? In playoff games. That would be good. Yeah, I mean, uh, obviously, uh, Tom Brady. Uh, Definitely one of them.
Myself.
So, two Michigan guys. That is correct, Vick. Pretty cool. And two guys who played for Lloyd Carr. You know, I don't know where John Navarre yesterday was, but he was taking a victory knee wherever he was.
Um so I mean uh I've always wanted to ask you this question, so I now have this opportunity. You were, and this is unfortunate, but yet fortunate on that day, the last Michigan quarterback to beat Urban Meyer. You beat him in that Capital One Bowl. When he was the head coach of Florida, you out-dueled Tim Thebow. The current Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart had a couple scores that day, and it was Lloyd's last game.
And Rich Rodriguez was standing on that sideline. Was that awkward? Was that just an awkward day for everybody? Uh to do that on behalf of Lloyd. Yeah, I mean, to be honest, I mean, now that you bring it up, really didn't think much about it just 'cause we were so uh engulfed in the game and about Lloyd, but I think even the weeks leading up to it, it was it was different.
And um, you know, not knowing Rich, you know, you know, his um you know, spread offense and with Pat White and all that, but didn't know a lot about them, just knew that it was going to be a different system, a different look for Michigan. But we were more worried about Lloyd and setting him off on the right way. He's given us so much, and especially to our program. True leader. And a guy that really cares about the student athlete.
But not just that, though, Chad, because so much you do point out what was being said by all of us. Watching Michigan football was, you know, here comes Rich Rod, spread offense, but. You guys did that that day against Florida. I mean, you winged it around for 373 yards passing. On that day, you found Manningham, who wound up making one of the biggest catches in Super Bowl history a couple years later.
If not two years, it was two years later. I mean, you were finding him and Arrington all over the place. Did Lloyd say, Let's open it up before I get out of here? This three yards and a cloud of dust, everyone can stick it. Did that happen?
Well, I think, yeah, I mean, I think, I mean, obviously we knew Lloyd was going to be gone, but maybe some of those assistant coaches still wanted to stick around Michigan, so they wanted to. you know, show that we could uh show that we could actually open it up and show Rich Rodd that, hey, our coaches are adaptable as well and uh, you know, can do a different system rather than a pro style offense. Did Brady reach out to you while you were at school there? Did you have any relationship with him that uh might actually still uh linger today? Chan?
Yeah, I mean it was it was very early on and um you know just a couple of key moments. But It was just pretty much just be yourself, go out there, you know, lead the team. And it was very short. And, you know, we had a couple conversations when I was in Miami after the games. I always appreciate him.
I always admired the way he's played the game, representing the University of Michigan and the quarterback club here in the NFL. Chad, congrats on the win yesterday, man, and getting your team to the next level, getting them to the AFC championship game. Good luck preparing for the Bills, and let's stay in touch. Congrats on that big W yesterday for you. Appreciate it, Rich.
You got it. That is Chad Henney. The Kansas City Chiefs here on the Rich Hisen Show. Man, I just remember that Capital One game where Rich Rod was standing on the sidelines in his new Michigan hat, and there's Lloyd coaching the game. It's just like, this is so weird.
So weird. I know, and I just thought to myself, boy, they're opening it up. He's winging it all over the place. Where was this all season? And are they just deciding that Lloyd just basically said, I'll show you on the way out the door.
And he's telling me it's the coaches saying, hey, Rich Rod, look what we can do.

That's O'ReillyAuto.com/slash Eisen. Yeah. Eric Braden here on the Rich Eisen Show. We have printed out three of the great sports rants of all time, and we would love for you to do your best, Victor Newman. That'll be a good one.
The first one is Herm Edwards. Yes, Herm Edwards. The first one up, Herm Edwards, on October 30th, 2002, after a week eight loss to the Cleveland Browns. Here is a play to win the game. as told by Victor Newman.
This is great about sports. This is what's the greatest thing about sports. is you play to win. Hello? You play to win the damn game, right?
You don't play just to play it. That's the great thing about sports. You played to win. And October 16th, 2006, after the Cardinals blew a 20-point lead against the Bears on Monday night football. Oh, man.
Dennis Green, they are who we thought they were, as portrayed by Victor Newman. Bears are who we thought they were, you know? That's why we took the damn field.
Now if you want to crown them. Then crown their arts. But they are who we thought they were. And we let them off the damn hook. Very good.
Very well done.
Alright, last one for you. I'm glad that we got it rolling because here's the last one. I can villo. On May 7th, 2002. The famed practice press conference of one Alan Iverson as recounted.
By the man who plays Victor Newman, Eric Braden. I mean, listen, man. You're talking about practice, okay? Not a game? What a game.
What a game!
Alright? You talk about practice. I mean How silly is that? I know it's important. Yeah, I do, I do, I do, I honestly do.
Hope you're talking about practice, man. Wanna be talking about it? Practice. You told me about practice, man. I mean, fantastic.
The only thing that could have topped that is we asked when William Shatner came in, we wanted him to do his. His sort of sit-down. scat poetry to fly eagles fly. And I don't think he was up for it. Oh my gosh, that would have been great.
Road. Mr. Mayor on NBC. You have a great Ted Danson and a terrific cast with Holly Hunter and more Thursdays on NBC. You could stream it the next day on Peacock.
That's another great part about Peacock: you watch something on BC, you miss it, you could stream it right here the next day. That's how Zanzi, again. My son's viewership is free charge. Zoe's extraordinary playlist. He watches that on Peacon.
The next day.
Some of your roles. That's how we roll as an Eisen family. There may be an eye in Eisen, but we're team players when it comes to PCOC. Free of charge, on the arm, on the house, drinks. On the other hand.
Oh, go pick out a nice dress. Henry. Pick out a nice dress. We're back here on the Rich Rise. How are you doing, Henry?
We're back here. Great chat with Chad Henning right there. Uh okay. I'll do this piece of news and then get to your news update.
Okay, Chris? How about it? Uh our friend Rick Stroud, who covers the uh Buccaneers for the Tampa Bay Times. Says that the bucks are, when I said injury news, probably people thought, who's got hurt? Oh my gosh.
The Bucks are designating Vita Via for return. From Injured Reserve. And he's going to be practicing Wednesday, and they're expecting him to be activated for Sunday's NFL title game if you remember. in that uh how many downs are left Thursday night or Against the Bears, Veo, who's been phenomenal on that line, important in terms of stopping the run. Looks like he's going to be back for the big game.
Oh boy. That is significant news if he can get back and be the vida ve that we know. Certainly for Aaron Jones and Jamal. Williams coming rolling downhill out of that, you know, that It's sort of Mesh point RPO that they're running. Right up the gut.
Not when that guy's there. That's big. Woof. Big if he's back. All right.
Let's get Chris Brockman's news update here on a busy Monday. Go for it, please. And now, with a report of the day's news from the world of sports and entertainment, someone who is not a journalist or newsman by any definition of the word whatsoever, it's Chris Brown. All right, Christopher, what do you have? All right, let's start with Patrick Mahomes.
We saw how he exited the game yesterday. Andy Reid said that Mahomes is in concussion protocol: quote: We'll just follow that. See how he does from there the next couple days. I mean, when he got up. I thought to myself, that's a wrap for him on the day.
And I'm just glad that he did not return. That'd have been a big hole hoo ha. And rightfully so. Same with Lamar Jackson. That just shows you, do you remember that?
When the concussion rule was first put into place, and they said there's going to be an independent observer upstairs buzzing down to take somebody out, and you're like, Well, what happens if it's like the third or fourth quarter of a playoff game? Like, what's like, really? Is that really what we're going to do right now? And the league was like, Yes, that's what we're going to do. And the last two reigning MVPs of this league both got knocked out of their playoff games on divisional playoff weekend and did not return.
That is what is the latest proof of a culture change. About this very important subject of player health. And safety. Neither came back in.
So it's There's that. One other piece of injury note: Antonio Brown. Didn't see much of him yesterday. Only one catch. Didn't play in the second half.
He's going to undergo an MRI. Looks like an injured knee has been bumming him out there. Justin Fields, today's the last day for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft. He did announce. He did.
He is going to enter the draft just. All right, baby. Here we go. Should be the second or third quarterback taken off the board. We will see.
Some coaching news. The Texans are doing a virtual interview with Eric Bienemi today. The NFL and the. And by virtual, you mean by Zoom, not like that they're just going to imagine it and tell Deshaun that they did it. Right.
Hey, Deshaun, we did it. It's very funny. Very funny. Check with Eric. We did it.
Okay.
Can you come back now? Can you answer my calls, please? That's nice, nice. Thank you. Yes, yes.
By Zoom or whatever other video technology that they use. The Chiefs and the League had to sign off on it. And they did.
So that's good. That is good news. Let's see. The Seahawks. According to Jeremy Fowler, they've spoken to former Jets head coach Adam Gace about their offensive coordinator opening.
Seahawks also intend to speak to Mike Kafka, who is the Chiefs QB coach.
So it'll go from let Russ cook to let Russ order takeout.
Okay.
Not even simmering. Senator order takeout. Not even simmer out. I don't want to go. Let's let Russ postmate.
Mm-hmm. So what is it going to call? Oh, gosh. PB and J's. By the way, hey, look, let's just keep getting all sorts of Jets offensive.
People. They went from Brian Schottenheimer who was the ground and pound guy. And then it didn't work out when there was nothing to ground, and they finally told Rex to pounce in. You know, pound pavement.
So, there have been reports that Russell Wilson is going to have a say on this. Let's just... Throw this out there. What if they hire a guy he doesn't like? Are we going to get Russ trade demand rumors popping up?
Imagine if he hits the market. Oh, my God. Woof! Bring him to New York. Let me be the first to just stir the pot with the money.
Well, I mean, he won a Super Bowl in the building. He knows how to win a Super Bowl in that building. I was there. I think he wasn't the MVP. Bring him there.
Many roughly. I'd like to play in New England. Yeah. Let's see. The Houston Chronicle is saying that Bills OC Brian Dayball is going to stay with the team after he was passed up for the Chargers.
Head coaching job. Good news for the Bills, man. Maybe not for Brian Dable, but good news for the Bills. Run it back. Run it back with Josh Allen.
Keep going. Oh, man, that's good news for them.
So How about that? Nobody wants the peace of the Texans job. Nobody wants it. And Dable comes from the Belichick world, and so does Casario. And Dable was also the Alabama Ocean.
Here we go. It wants no piece of it. I mean, I don't. Do you blame anybody? That Sports Illustrated story on the Houston Texans was quite the eye-opener.
And um What else you got over there? It looks like Josh McDaniels is becoming a front runner for the Eagles, Josh. How about that? That's interesting. How about that?
Is he going to bring the no-fun approach from Belichick to Philadelphia? That's very soon. Isn't that amazing how things turn? Hey, you know, we're having fun here. You guys lose, and now we'll take you, the coach.
Sure, absolutely, take the coach. That's how it's going, how it is. And then when he agrees. He's got to agree in person. And then they lock him up like the gimp until he signs, right?
Seriously.
Put him in Jeff Lurie's garage or whatever underneath. You know what I mean? Seriously, like lock them up. Like you met you We are watching you sign it. And then you stay.
Yeah. Josh? Because we lost Frank Reich because of you. That's amazing. Yeah.
If he takes that Eagles' job, hey, we have so much more fun here. We're Philly special. We give out ice cream on Saturday nights. We have fun. You don't.
Now, all of a sudden, we'll take you. Mark, I want you to have my cheese trial. And then we'll take you. And the reason why Wentz maybe went south is 'cause Frank Reich left. And the only reason why Frank Reich left is because you left the Colts in the lurch.
But we'll take you.
So weird. How crazy is this league if he takes that job? If he takes that job, how crazy is this league? See? Oh, man.
Not for long. And then it'll be him to try and rehabilitate Wentz and tell Jalen Hurts: you stay right where you are. And then the locker room will say, we'll follow you. Oh yeah. I can't see him.
I don't know. Josh is, and by the way, he's been waiting for that second shot. Since he basically said, let's get Cutler out of here. And then let's go Teebo. And see if we can win some football games.
It's my way or the highway. And then Elway's just like, yeah, that'll be the end of the day. Hey, what a playoff game. Speaking of the Jet Stretch, this is just for you. The Jaguars have parted ways with former special assistant to the GM, John Idzik.
The former Jets GM was Brown to work with Dave Caldwell, now both of them are out. Actually, this is good news for you.
Some offshore betting sites are now taking action on where Deshaun Watson ends up. The Jets are your frontrunners, two to one.
Well, I don't know. Word is again that wasn't it Schefter's report saying that he's looking at Miami. Take his talent. Yeah, Miami's 3-1. The Bears, 4-1.
Yeah, the Bears aren't. The Bears. Broncos 5-1. The Bears would love to uh get a redo on their on their draft. And this is cool.
There may not be a combine this year, but there is a senior bowl, and it's going to have Devontae Smith. Alabama wide receiver won the highest control trial. He announced he is going to play in the senior bowl. Hey, I know the senior bowl people are all about getting as many. eligible senior bowl eligible players that you've heard of there.
So that's cool. Yeah, that is cool. Sam Darnold would like him probably. Who? Yeah, I know.
Not second overall, though. Nah, that's too bad. But you have multiple checks once took a guy named Johnny Lamb Jones at the top five, and that did not work out at all. I'm just emotionally scarred, so that's all I'm saying. I want to thank today's guests, Mike Florio, Al Michaels, and Chad Henney.
Later on today, I'm going to Zoom with Doc Rivers, and it's an honor to talk to him on Martin Luther King Day.
So, there'll be lots to talk about with him. And again, it is MLK Day, so if we can all. model ourselves about peace and love. and uh reaching out to somebody else and tell them That we will embrace love and not hate, today would be the day to do so. Yes, indeed.
So, thank you to everybody for taking on this edition of The Rich Eyes and Show. And we will see you on Tuesday. Brother from another coming up next, we'll take you to that on Peacock. If you're listening to us on the radio, we'll chat Tuesday.
