We're getting settled in, keeping an eye on in this very moment, of David Culley being introduced as the new head coach of the Houston Texans. Talk about being in a tough spot. Hey, David, your football life or getting your first job at age 65. What about Deshaun Watson? What are your thoughts on Deshaun Watson?

Have you spoken to Deshaun Watson? Do you have any plans to speak to Deshaun Watson? Can you sit with Deshaun Watson? This is after the owner's sitting there and after the gentleman is sitting here. My goodness, we'll keep an eye on all that.

Nick Siriani was just introduced as the new head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Brought in to figure out their offense and their quarterback situation. Unfortunately, For Eagles fans. Um Before he's even taken the field, we've seen our first punt. From Philadelphia.

First punt. Nick Siriani said he is no, he is not even close to. He w he had it. I mean He's not even ready to say if there's going to be an open competition at the quarterback spot. I mean, literally, had a ton of I don't knows, and there's a lot of Eagles fans truly roasting this guy.

He's in a tough spot. He just can't act. I mean, what's he going to say? A very tough spot. We'll delve into that a little bit more in this hour, but I want to turn to my next guest who knows of all.

All about the cauldron of performing in Philadelphia and doing so with the eyes. Um Looking at him with a ton of expectation. He won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles beating Tom Brady, and he won a Super Bowl with his current team in his first time around with them beating Peyton Manning. He's the only human being to defeat either one of those guys, both of those guys, in a Super Bowl. His name is Malcolm Jenkins.

How are you, Malcolm? Rich, I'm doing well. How you been, brother? I am doing better always for talking to you.

Okay. Um. I know this is not your current team, but I'm wondering what you do think of, if you don't mind me just throwing you in right now as part of the paparazzi. And what do you think of what is going on with your former team in Philadelphia? Do you have any thoughts on that subject, Malcolm Jenkins?

If so, what are they?

Well, you know, I'm going to be honest. I hadn't really paid a ton of attention to it. You know, I was really just. looking around the league to look at with all of the coaching vacancies, how they want to handle black coaches and what opportunities want to come. Um but I but I do know that Whoever was going to take over that job in Philly was inheriting.

um you know, some work. And I I think Jeffrey Laurie made some Some comments earlier this offseason that hinted or was really direct about they're going into a rebuilding phase. And you know, and I know as players on a team and as a fan base, you never really want to hear that. because it sometimes kind of muddies up what what the priorities are, but Um, look, you know, they got a situation where obviously all that went down with Carson Wentz this year. a lot of money invested into them.

Um and then you had Jalen Hurts come in and and really Take command of this, the offense. It ignited a little bit of juice into the team. And that's not the first time that that's happened from a backup quarterback, obviously, in Philly. And so it's. It's one of those things that like something has to Change, you know, whether you put that onus on the coaching staff or you put that onus on the players that are that are there.

Um, but I I mean, you know, there's obviously There's going to be a lot of work to be done there. But they've got great leadership. They've got players in that locker room that are a prideful group. And what you hope to see is that Uh, at least from a fan, right. I'm I'm I even call myself an Eagles fan.

You just hope that the competitiveness, that the culture. And the uh Kind of the ethos of what that team stands for at least stays in place.

So, again, you know, as a fan of the Eagles, you do, however, have quite a unique perspective. And one more follow-up on this. Is there. An issue with Wentz in that locker room. We keep on hearing about it.

You were there when there was a magazine article locally that came out said there was a big problem with Wentz and players in that locker room. Is there an issue? Is there any there about Carson Wentz that you can share with us? Malcolm.

Well, I think, you know, as a as a teammate in front of Carson's, I I think that, you know. it always starts right with performance. And he hadn't performed up to I think the expectations that everybody's had for him, and I don't think he would say he's played up to his own expectations. But some of the other issues that I felt, you know, when I was in a locker room, was just that, you know, there there was just too much Um Leeway. Um, and it didn't make him a better player.

I don't think they did them any favors by trying to kind of uh protect his his ego or trying to Um You know, just really protect him as a player as opposed to it keeping it just like every other player, it's like keeping it performance-based. And really being real about what he needed to improve on, but also adjusting to. to put them in places that, you know, w that that are that can make them successful. And I think that's a little bit on the coaching staff. That's also Simon that's on the player.

Like every player go should go into every offseason, evaluating what they did well, what they didn't do well, and you look to see improvement year after year. But if that's not the case and you don't see it and there are no changes and it's not being addressed, But I know like as a player you almost Like, you know, what are we doing? You know, you're to do the same thing over and over again. I'm expecting different results is insanity. And And unfortunately, I think that a little bit of that has taken place over the last few years.

And and obviously, you know, this offseason shows that if something had to change in a major way. And Carson's still there and And so he's still Regardless of who they bring in for, you know, to coach him and get him better, he's still going to have to improve as a player. in order for that team to have success. Malcolm Jenkins here on The Rich Eisen Show. Let's talk about the hiring round.

David Culley being introduced by the Texans right now. He is a coach of color. The Jets hiring the first Muslim. uh to be a head coach in the NFL. And then the rest are Um white men.

What do you think of the current round of hiring in the NFL, Malcolm? Jenkins. I I I think it's uh it's To me, it's been on par with the status quo. We bring up these conversations and and and and You know, talk about how many qualified. African American coaches that there are out there to get opportunity.

never seemed to do that, you know, and Um You know, and it's unfortunate. And and you see How many coaches that are white that get those jobs, you know, with little. Uh you know, um with very little experience with it very little credentials, oftentimes coming from teen or having a resume that isn't impressive at all, Um, you know, it it's it's it's one of those things where as even as a player in this league who's trying to be vocal on it and And get my perspective on some of the coaches that have helped myself, like Aaron Glenn. who just got a D coordinator job, you know, in in Detroit. I think he'd be a head coach in this league.

Deuce Faley, somebody I'm talking about, I think should be a head coach. you know, the enemy. We've been waiting to get an opportunity. And I think. Um You know, it's really frustrating when you see how these situations play out.

Um It just doesn't really seem like there's a concerted effort to to actually go with the most qualified. uh folks, but more so with peop what who people are comfortable with or You know, kind of it's this this good old boys club that is really hard to penetrate and get into.

So, what's the answer? You know what I'm saying?

So, what would you say if you could have the commissioner's ear? Because clearly, it is something that he wants to address. Yeah.

So, what would you suggest, Malcolm Jenkins, to try and and change what clearly uh needs to be changed.

Well, like anything, right? When you want to change the outcome. or change the landscape of an organization. You have to, and you want, especially when it comes to diversity, right? You want diversity within your organization, and that to be a priority.

Well, then you have to come. Have a diverse group of decision makers. And unfortunately, when you look at The ownership and the decision makers around our league, there's very little, if any, diversity. And so we're expecting people Mm. who don't have a diver who are not in a diverse group, we're expecting decision makers that don't have different perspectives to suddenly change their minds and hearts.

And do something that's been out of character for them for however many years they've owned these teams. And so to me, I think if we want to be serious about having black coaches and more black GMs, And things of that nature, I think we're going to have to have a serious conversation about diversifying what ownership looks like. Malcolm Jenkins here on the Rich Eisen Show. I'm wondering, can you give voice to what you and other veteran players in the NFL are thinking when you're seeing Deshaun Watson? Um, say he wants to be traded year after signing a big long deal, and the only thing you can equate this to is what an NBA.

elite player attempts to do and get an exit visa from a team. um and a city that he's connected to. I mean, obviously Hardin would Is the equivalent, one would say, in terms of playering status, elite status for Deshaun Watson. Clearly, they're two different. People, but I'm wondering if you can give voice to what you and many other players of your caliber and experience think about what's going on with Deshaun Watson in Houston.

Yeah, I mean, you know, contrary to belief, like, some guys aren't necessarily motivated simply by money. And I think Um Whenever you see a player of his caliber, you know, of his character as well, like, he's not a guy. We've had a history of being Uh You know. a problem, you know, child in a locker room or a guy who just can't get along. It's always been praised as a leader and somebody who's who kind of stepped out in front.

And when they Are you really vocal about wanting to leave a place, then it's usually something that you can't repair and it's beyond. working it out. And I think Sometimes players have to do what's best for them to be In a situation where obviously they can make some money, but guys want to be able to win and be happy. Oh. where they are.

You want to enjoy the work you do. Because it's a violent sport, we put our bodies on a line, and it's like when you're in a miserable situation, on top of that. it doesn't make for good ball or a good career.

So I think you see him doing what he needs to do to get out of a situation that Wasn't the best round. Let's talk a couple things about your own house. Malcolm Jenkins, do you believe you have played your last game with Drew Brees? Do you think Drew is. uh going to retire.

You know, I d I'm I can't speculate on it uh or really I can't confirm it or anything like that, but you know. What I what I have seen And um And I can understand is that, you know, Drew's His body is getting tougher and tougher for him to finish these seasons, right? When you get older as a player in this league. The you really just are here for Sunday. It's not the off-season, it's not the training, it's not practice.

You are here. to compete on Sundays because that's what we love to do as players. And when you get hurt and you're in a training room as much as he's been, um you know, that's not why we're here, you know, to to rehab and And go through all of those things, but you're not playing. And he's missed significant time in the last two seasons. Uh his kids are getting older and I know that's important to him, spending time with his family.

But as a competitor, when you're elite, is like as he's been for so long. And to be so close with the teams that we've had to getting back to the Super Bowl and getting an opportunity to compete for a championship. Um I think that that weighs very heavily as well.

So it's a it's a tough decision. I I think you know, we know it he's close, you know, whether it's this off season or if the next, Uh, you know he's kinda at the end of that rope, but he's still very much a competitor and no ways he can compete in this league. It's just, you know, he's going to have to make the decision, you know, to weigh all the options. What's the most important thing for him in his life at this moment? And that's always that's a good decision for him to be able to make.

Most of us won't leave this league on our own terms. Right. And it seems like he will. What about you? Fourteenth overall pick of the two thousand nine draft, thirteenth season.

You can get fourteen seasons. Um you play this year. How how long how much longer do you want to Keep doing it. This next season will be 13 for me. All righty.

And, you know, and I set a goal for myself a long while ago. I wanted to play 10 years in this league. And then, after that, you know, I was going to take it year to year based off of my body, you know. with my financial situation looking like And just like as a competitor, have I felt like I accomplished everything? And And, you know, even for me, I I The thing that has kept me going is that I've been healthy for so long.

And I haven't had to, you know, spend a lot of time in the training room. I've been able to stick to doing what I love doing. That's playing on Sundays. And I'm on a really good team that's got a lot of really good potential, a great organization. Good culture, I'm having fun.

So, I don't know how long I'll continue to do it. It's really year to year for me. At least I'm I I definitely know I'll beat her this season. And I know you have uh far far more interests outside of the world of football. I do want to get an update on that in a second.

Uh but first, front load Super Bowl fifty-five. You played against both of these guys, one of them three times this year. And how do you, with your keen championship eye, See Super Bowl 55. Going, Malcolm Jenkins. Yeah, I I think to me the the most interesting storyline is going to be the Bucks defense.

Because I think Brady, as much as they weapons they have on offense with Tom Brady and all those guys. Um I still think the most Um The best dynamic of that team is their defense. And even in the game we played them that third time. It was a defensive battle, and their defense really outplayed ours. They took the ball away, I forget how many times.

But we're very, very stingy in a defensive battle. And that was the difference in the game. And it's been getting better and better each week. Those linebackers are. Making tackles, they're covering, and they're forcing turnovers.

You got both those safeties I knew were banged up, but I was really, really impressed with. the rookie winfield all year. He looks Just like his dad out there. Yeah, corners that I can match up.

So, and if you look at the matchup with them last time, that was really where the game. kind of was lost was the ability to handle the Chiefs offense, especially Tariq Hill.

So I'm interested to see what the defensive scheme is going to be and how they handle You know, over the explosiveness of the Chiefs' offense. And because I think Tom Brady and their offense are going to do what they're doing, and the Chiefs are going to do what they do on offense. But I think it's going to come down to If the Bucs can continue to play defense at a high level against the best offense in the league. How's your production company, Black Boys, which was released in 2020 and can be seen right here on Peacock, available to stream for free on Peacock? right now is is part of your production company.

What's going on with that? For you. Yeah, so, you know, that that has um qualified to to be nominated for Uh, and I should definitely hoping for that, but I'm really now that the offseason is here. You know, diving really back into those projects, we got a couple that we want to make. I want to make black girls for sure.

And so it's just prioritizing projects, but that has been something that I've really enjoyed doing: being a storyteller. And and and giving people um You know, black stories that we haven't heard before in ways that we can digest them. It's really hard. You know, and you're familiar with how I've used my platform kind of in the sports world to talk about these issues, but. it's hard to have sometimes it's hard to effectively communicate in this space because we want to be talking about sports.

Um, a and, you know, there is friction there. But through film and documentaries, it just seems to knock down some of those barriers and walls and creates a little bit more understanding. Um and so I found I found it, you know, to be uh um a more effective way to to communicate, at least for me. And so I'm really enjoying diving into creating more stories and more content. Um, for the production company, well, as you know, my platform is yours whenever you want to promote anything you're doing, Malcolm.

You know that, and I'm pleased to say it, and anytime, seriously. Very much. Of course. Before I let you go, you surprised Urban Myers coaching in the NFL. What do you think?

I'm I am, you know. I am. When you look at the time in Florida and they had some health issues and left there, it's time at Ohio State. Uh really, you know. had a lot of success with the program, but then had to step away from it.

So to make the jump to now the NFL, Um You know, it's an interesting one, and I think everybody has kind of their eyes on to see what. What? kind of culture he's going to bring in as a, you know, as a longtime college coach, but now a rookie head coach. uh any NFL.

So It's interesting, but you know, I'm happy for him. You know, and I think we'll we'll we'll look to see. When you said he his time at Ohio State, what school is that? Because I don't know what school that is, because It's the team that Zero team hadn't been able to beat in a decade. No, I'm just confused because I'm confused because normal.

Oh, I'm sorry, it's the same as the Ohio State. It's just, I thought you were.

Well, Richard, you know, I'm confused. We've got a long history.

So, for all your listeners, you're right. I I didn't do it properly. It's the Ohio State, but I was I got really comfortable talking to my old friend Rich here and You, of all people, know it's the Ohio State. Yes, I do. I do.

You guys dodges in here. No, no, I don't. Oh, my God. Don't go full Herb Street on me, Malcolm. Don't do that.

Oh, don't do that. I was disappointed. I was disappointed. Oh, my gosh. Don't forget, though, when you said the Ohio State, where the goat went to school, right?

Let's not forget that. Correct. What did you say at the top of this I was the only person who was? Oh my gosh. Malcolm, I always appreciate chatting with you.

Thanks for coming on, and always, spitting truth. I really appreciate our chats every time we have them. Thank you. Good to talk to you, Rich. All right, back at you.

That's Malcolm Jenkins at Malcolm Jenkins on Twitter, at Malcolm Jenkins27 on Instagram. And you can, once again, stream now for free right here on this Peacock app. His uh his documentary Black Boys, which Can you imagine he wins an Oscar? He gets nominated for an Oscar. Let's go.

Oh, that'd be awesome. Let's go. That would be terrific. Uh let's take a break because the Texans, I believe, have concluded their press conference. And uh what in the world did they have to say about Deshaun Watson?

Oh boy. That's next on the Rich Heisen Show. Yeah.

So, you know, we love talking movies around here. You know, we love talking comedy around here. We also love talking about classics around here.

So, you know what I'm all about. That said, All of that said. You know how I must have felt when I was sitting in the movie theater like I was the other day watching the previews and up came a preview. for the naked gun. with Liam Neeson as Frank Greben, junior.

That Preview had me at hello. I loved police squad back in the day. I loved the naked gun back in the day. And here comes the naked gun once again with yes, Liam Neeson as Frank Drebbin Jr. Come on now, son of the celebrated police squad, Lieutenant Frank Drebbin from the original movie, Paul Walter Hauser's in this movie, also Pamela Anderson.

Guess who also makes an appearance? WWE superstar. Cody Rhodes, and the producer of the movie is Seth McFarlane, the creator of The Family Guy. Come on now. This is going to be so much fun.

I'm excited to see The Naked Gun in theaters on August 1st.

So. What do you do on August 1st? Of course, you're going to a theater near you and you're seeing the naked gun. I might even be there. Let's talk O'Reilly Auto Parts people.

Stop by O'Reilly Auto Parts today or visit us at O'ReillyAuto.com/slash Eisen.

That's O'ReillyAuto.com/slash Eisen. What was it like shooting that scene though, with Ray Kinsella and his father? I mean, how many, how long did it come from?

Well, we had to do that. You notice that we did that at Magic Hour. You also noticed that when that shot pulled back and you saw all those cars. You know, now, but that would have been CG'd. But that was technically, that was all extras that we called in the radio, come be in our movie.

And they created that big traffic jam. Hold on a second.

So that traffic jam, that's a real shot. That's a real shot. And the people from Iowa came and saw so many people feel like they were part of that movie.

So those thousands and thousands of cars that were in that giant traffic jam that went out on those two lanes, that was real. But in terms of playing it, in terms of, as you said, the quiet moment, how did you work that, Kevin?

Well, no, no, what I did was I went back to when I first read it. And so I become the audience when I read it. And when I read it, I went. I couldn't believe that it had orchestrated itself to that thing, and I had that feeling on the couch. And so I knew if I played that straight, if I didn't wink at anybody.

That these players did come, you know. That's my corn. You know, Phil Robinson is the architect of that movie, you know. I tell a story, you know, and I don't tell it often, but. You know, they kept coming after me.

I wasn't gonna be able to do that movie. I was gonna do revenge. And I got into a, finally, revenge kept getting pushed, kept getting pushed. And finally, I had to put my foot down and say, look. Uh If you don't get this movie together, I'm going to go to do this movie in the corner.

I asked the director, why did you hold out for me so long? Why? And he said, well, And this is one of the greatest actors we've ever seen. He goes, they wanted me to do it with Robin Williams. And I said, Robin Williams is perfect.

He said, yeah, but... When I think of Robin, I think he does hear voices in the corn. And I don't want that. People don't believe you hear voices. And that was a really interesting.

That was a, that's a director. that makes a save. That's a Mariano Rivera, you know, it's a save. He saved his movie. Because of his belief in an idea, you know, not the quality of actor, because Robin Williams will never, this is a guy so special.

But I was curious. I said, he's actually a bigger star than me. You know, whatever. And he goes, I need somebody that you don't think cares voices. And that would be you.

I've never heard Robin Williams was considered for that role. That's unbelievable. And then you did it and obviously we're. We were talking about it today. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It had gold dust on it when I read it because I did that little intake of breath. Do you want to have a catch? And of course I wept myself. Love that interview with Kevin Costner, you can watch Yellowstone right here on Peacock as well. PeacockTV.com to get the Peacock app for free.

Okay, so while we were talking to Malcolm Jenkins, The Texans introduced David Cully as their new head coach. Couple quotes from our friend Ian Rappaport at. NFL Network quote from Nick Casario. I just want to reiterate our commitment to Deshaun Watson. We have zero interest in trading the player.

We have a great plan and vision for him. We look forward to spending more time with him. David Colley, the new head coach, the reason I'm in this position today is because I know he's going to be a Houston Texan.

Okay. So, their plan is to hire David Culley and hope that the general manager that apparently angered Watson by being hired. Will be influential.

So let's get Ian Rappaport on the phone as my colleague from the NFL Network on. Terrific. Yeah, man. How are you, Ian? I'm good, Rich.

What's happening? I was interviewing Malcolm Jenkins. I saw you were on the screen. I'm like, let's see if Ian can join me in between hits on NFL Network.

So, is that the plan that the Texans hope that they can put? the trade request genie back in the bottle and and and go to battle with uh Deshaun Watson. Is that the plan in Houston? Yeah, I would say that that is the plan. They have, as far as I can tell, yet to have.

Substantial conversations, if any, conversations with Deshaun Watson. I mean, I know the owner has gotten a couple texts back. I just don't know that. Nick Caserio has sat down with him extensively and discussed everything yet. They do not want to trade them.

Nick Casiro's words were pretty strong. saying he has zero interest in trading the player. David Coey's words were stronger, saying the reason I'm in this position is I know he's going to be a Houston Texan. Um And all that is noteworthy, and I do not mean to sort of minimize that stuff. Um It just It's hard for me to do this without thinking about Dave Gettelman saying about Odell, we didn't sign Odell to trade him and then trading him.

So Jamal Adams pledging to be a Jet for life, then asking his way out of the Jets like four months later.

So, words are words. I know teams are not going to stop trying.

Well, I mean, and your. talks with people close to Watson or Watson or his camp. I mean, is this delusional? Is this a delusional approach? Because it also opens up the Texans to if Watson says, Yeah, I still want out, now they've got a new general manager and.

Coach that has been rejected by the heart and soul of the team and the Number one in the Heart, number four in the program, number one in the hearts of fans, then this has been rejected. At least if they were moving on now, they would say, Well, he wanted out, we're going to have a fresh start. This is kind of a risky play, don't you think? Yeah, I think they've already sort of been rejected.

So that to me, that not like that ship has sailed, but that card has already been played. Like they're already he's already telling them he doesn't want to be there. He's already telling them he doesn't want to work with them.

So If it lasts a couple of months of rejection, like it's already been rejection.

So I think they've already seen that. What is Um what is interesting Is it's not actually the hire of Nick Casiro that Deshaun Watson doesn't like. It's not actually the hire of David Cully that Deshaun Watson doesn't like. It's the way the owner treated him. in not involving him with the Caserial hire.

promising that he would have a say and then not giving him a say, promising him that He would interview coaches He hears good things about they did interview Eric the Enemy, but did not interview Robert Sala. Um that's the frustration. It's not the frustration of Um you know, who actually was hired. It's more of the process.

So I say this to add I don't think Deshaun Watson has any ill will toward Nick Casirio or David Culler. It's called the owner.

Well, that's not going to change. I was peripherally trying to keep track of this while interviewing again Malcolm Jenkins in the previous segment. And. I didn't see Cal McNair. Was he not on the Zoom?

He was not, as a matter of fact. Wow. Nope. Which you know, is obviously interesting and extremely noteworthy. Um However, I would say this.

Yes. Most Most owners are there for introductory press conferences for coaches, as you know. Most. Um I do not think it was the best for the Houston Texans to have Cal McNair up there today. The way Nick Casiro and David Coley handled it was fine.

you know, the Patriots very famously do only what's best for their team. I do not think it was best for the Houston Texans to have Kyle McNair go up there and not be great. Um as opposed to having Casero and Cully do well up there.

So then so then Ian Rapid Port, a few more minutes left with my NFL network colleague here.

So then um the way that they approached it was, let's say we have no intention of trading him and I'm here because I know he's going to be here from the general manager and coach respectively, which which gets us through the day. Um and now comes what are the inflection points? That would maybe spur a deadline here. Contractually, anything, the draft is obviously one, but what else might spur something outside of Watson? Calling somebody in the NFL media and saying, Let's do a one-on-one sit-down, and then he completely blows it all up.

Like, what outside of all that are our inflection points? Ju the only real thing is the start of the league year, which If you You know, I know you host a very well-respected show. Thank you, sir. I am currently a guest on it. I know you like things to talk about.

If you are interested, And talking about Deshaun Watson from now until March 17th, you're probably in luck. Um You have to trade him before the start of the league year to me. because no team is going to say we're going to invest You know, forty or it's not forty, but say twenty-nine million dollars per year, I think, is what's left on each each year. That's the average. We're not going to invest almost thirty million dollars per year.

In late April. It's going to be in March because you need to know what you have in free agency. If it doesn't happen by march seventeenth, then we're really headed to a long standoff. And is he going to sit out? I mean, historically, not a lot of players have.

Um Trent Williams did, but that was for sort of a different injury reason. Um And I don't think Deshaun Watson has any injuries.

So You know, we might be headed to a long standoff. I just the player. Historically, rarely sits out of that security. Before I let you go, Ian, let's talk quickly about the Eagles' introduction of Nick Siriani that happened the hour before the David Culley introduction in Houston. And it seemed like Siriani, as I said on the air, we have our first punt of the Siriani era where he basically said he wouldn't even commit to an open competition.

Like, it just seemed like, hey, I just got here and I'm not even close to giving you an answer on the quarterback situation. Did I? Did I kind of carry all that correctly or what did I miss from that press conference? That you glean.

Sometimes the punch is a very good play.

Sometimes, you know, the punch is a win. I think. Yeah.

I think for Nick Siriani, the most interesting thing to me he said. was that he couldn't give an answer on whether Carson would be here. Because he said all the right words, he said. Um You know, we have two top-notch quarterbacks. He wouldn't quite say there's going to be a camp competition, but he didn't rule it out.

But the only thing that matters is: is Carson Wentz going to be there? And the fact that he couldn't definitively say, yes, he is. Makes me think that this is much more open-ended than this is the guy who's going to fix Carson end of story. That's what that meant to me because. You know, if Nick Siriani was hired only to fix Carson Wentz, Then he would say Carson's definitely going to be here.

He did not say that. That was noteworthy. But, I mean, for him to make the decision, though, again, it's the 53-man he confirmed is going to be Howie Roseman, and then the day of the game is going to be him. But isn't Doug Peterson, you know, wasn't part of the reason why he was let go is because he wanted to move on from Wentz and that was not the case, that that was not going to happen? I'm trying to square the Peterson firing with the Siriani conversation right now.

I got the sense That um I got the sense that the reason f one of the reasons for the Doug Peterson firing was about staff. That he wanted to promote from within and kind of keep continuity. They wanted bigger, bolder hires outside the organization. He did not want them to tell him what to do with staffing. And I really got the sense that he was just very much over it.

Like it is five years Facing You know, Jeff McLean and his media friends in Philly, like that's a lot. And those are, and those are the nice ones, you know, like what happens when he goes into a deli. You know? Um I got the sense he pushed back, pushed back, and then was like, okay. Just, I think we're good here.

All right. Last one for you, Ian, because again, I know you're chasing news. Truly, last one. What is going on with Goff and the Rams? What is happening here?

I mean, Jalen Ramsey was on a Zoom last night with DeAndre Hopkins, our. Our colleague MJ Acosta Ruiz and also Prime. The coach at Jackson State. They're all, and Ramsey's like, we all know where Deshaun's going. He's coming here to L.A.

and Hopkins was like, get out of here. But what is happening with Goff and the Rams? Best you can. Suss out here for me. Um, they want to get better at the quarterback position.

And I think that is very clear. And they paid Goff a lot of money. And, you know, the Rams. I've obviously done things well there in the playoffs. They have a playoff win.

They have had several homegrown players who've gotten contract extensions that have not worked out. That's tough to deal with for a lot of reasons, but I think with Jared Goff, they have to get better at quarterback, and if it's not with him, I think they are They're okay with that. I mean, yes, like contractually it hurts, capitalize it hurts. But it Hurts more to have a quarterback that isn't good enough. But he obviously has gone the wrong way for them, and they need to fix it.

But I guess then the difference is it hurts. You know, at least the Eagles have Jalen, and they're refusing to have it hurt their cap, if you see where I'm going here, by keeping Wentz. But do the Rams, isn't the contract pretty much the same? Wouldn't that be the same problem? It seemed like the Rams, whatever the Eagles are refusing to move on from with Wentz because of the contract.

It seems like the Rams don't have that concern. Is that the the fact? Yeah, I mean both Both contracts are tradable. They really are. I mean, everyone says a lot of things.

I think if somebody wanted either of those guys definitively, you could definitely trade the contract. Because it's only I mean the cap hits you're already getting killed on the cap. If you trade, you know, $25 million of salary, It actually helps you because it lessens the cap charge that's already on the books. You're already. It's already hurting.

So trading the guy actually just helps a little bit.

So I think both are tradable. Ian, thanks for the call. I'll see you on NFL Network in a few minutes. Thanks for the call, brother. I really appreciate it.

As Ian Rappaport answering the text in the commercial break, can you do now? Yes. Can you come on? Sure.

Whole show is here in Kansas City in support of Big Slick. I want to describe for the radio audience, or what you care to, Jake Tapp, or what is on your feet. Eagles, Super Bowl commemorative sneakers with big screaming Eagles. I'm not really sure what the texture of the material is.

Okay. I have a more subtle reference to my team. This is the silver of the silver and black Oakland Raiders. Gene Lamont, longtime baseball man. Sweet, sweet, sweet Gene Lamont.

He made the sorry mistake of standing in front of us. The name Lamont is so fun to scream. Hey, Lamont. See? And it just rolls.

And you go, This is Bushley Lamont. When he used to come out, we used to sing like the Death Star March, like the Darth Vader. We'd go, Gene Lamont, Gene Lamont, oh, Gene Lamont, Gene Lamont, Gene Lamont. I know how seriously you take your Kansas City food. Yeah.

He's sending me videos all the time, different stuff to try. The text exchange between me and him and some of his other offensive linemen is hilarious. Like, I texted Mitchell Schwartz in the middle of the night about a brisket. Like, what is it? And I responded.

He responded. For whatever reason, I was up at that exact time. Weirdly, athletes like Pitch Perfect a lot. I'm not kidding. I know Bill Belichick knows all the songs.

He's always singing songs.

Now, Brett, when you saw that we had the 2015 World Series. I'm a big fan of that one, bud. I know. Where's that other one that the old guy will replace the 2015 one? With the 1980s.

Look at this. Oh, look at that. Just for you. Just the best. My dad had some tickets to Game 7, but had given them away.

So I didn't get to go to game seven and instead I had to work at a grocery store. I'd come up, I'd say, what happened? He goes, Daryl Motley just hit a home run. Go rearrange the milk. Wow, we did that.

I mean, so awesome. You were there too that day. That was amazing. We brought the whole show to Big Slick. the great charity run by All the Chiefs fans that are going crazy this week, and Rudd, and Stone Street, and Wrigle, and David Kechner, and And uh Jason Sudegas.

Break awesome. It's going to maybe be part of our Super Bowl game day morning. All those guys, they're going out of their minds. That was phenomenal. But we had it all there with the trophies and the C Young's awards.

Everything was there. And then we went there and just got. Absolutely hammered that night. Trashed. Just so trash.

But like. The best part, though, happened at midnight. Let them know what we did. Midnight barbecue. Oh, gosh.

Oh, my God. Man. They had, what, five different barbecue places? The best thing is for Children's Mercy Hospital, the, the, uh, the. Place that sick kids get better better, right there in the middle of our country.

Great stuff for. Back in our day, right here on the Rich Eisen Show, 844-204-Rich, number to dial. We're back here with our radio audience.

Okay. So The owner of the Texans did not appear today, so he's not answering questions as to why you and Deshaun are not on the same page. Why is Deshaun so upset with you? Why did you do this with Casario and all that sort of stuff? And I guess, you know.

Uh you have to weigh the Um The pros and the cons. The pros are that you show that you're going to be out there and you are taking. Um you know, the mantle, the responsibility, the heat. That's the, you know, the cons are: well, you'll be accused of ducking. Um And the pros are I'm going to make it about my two guys that I'm hiring.

That's it. And the general manager will handle the Stuff about Watson by saying we have no interest in trading the player, he got a great plan for him. And David Cully, just comment, I would wait, just put it right out there. Why the hell not? Just come out there.

I'm here because Deshaun's going to be a Houston Texan.

Okay, then. Let's make it happen. How do we do that?

Okay. I guess it's a long process. Do you do you go and do the You know, say anything like QSAC, take the boombox in front of his house and just, you know. You knock on the door and hope that you had. Had him at hello.

I mean, I'm trying to whatever. That's the Maguire approach. I, you know. I don't know, man. But it's going to have to.

He doesn't want to talk to the general manager. Again, I guess Ian Rapport said it's not the - it's not. It's not the general manager per se, it's the way he was hired. Right. And the coach was irrelevant.

Well, the order's not changing.

So you could say it's going to be up to the general manager and the coach to change his mind. It's really up to the owner. do that. And I guess that that ship has sailed. And here's the risks: the risks are, I know, Ian said that.

that Ian Rappaport, my colleague, just joined us. I know he said that the ship has sailed of him rejecting the team.

Okay. I know he said that the ship has sailed on rejecting the team, and thus that's not really much of a risk now. I will beg to differ. You know, if we had more time, if he wasn't being, you know, On the phone chasing news and getting ready for his next hit on NFL Network, which is minutes away. I would have pushed back.

by saying, well, hold on a second. He's rejected the owner and he's rejected the general manager. by saying he wants out. Even though the general manager, you said it was not the problem, it's the way that he hired him. Even though he tweeted out the more things change, the more they stay the same that he deleted, right?

We just try and work through all this. Yeah.

Um, Now though him saying I still want out. means he's rejecting the coach.

Okay. Sorry, coach. Love you. He could put out a statement saying I appreciate all the efforts of the coach who's going to be great there and all of that, but I still want out. How will that happen?

How will that occur?

Well, if the Texans just decide to go ahead and trade him. Then he'll put out a statement. If the Pexons don't do that, And he still rejects him, then it's just, it doesn't matter what's said.

Now we're locked in for the long haul. Because the coach is not going to change the situation. The coach tried. And then what does that say to the locker room to all the guys that look up to Deshaun Watson?

Well, coach tried. Yeah, it still didn't work for me. What does that mean? How's he going to sell something in the room to. Players have Deshaun didn't buy it.

Because of the owner.

Well, I'm working for the same organization, the same owner, and this coach didn't work for Deshaun. Why should it work for me? That's a tough sell. That's a tough situation for David Cully. You're running that risk.

If he rejects them again. And also, between now and the new league year. Which is when Ian mentioned was a big inflection point for a trade. The longer this goes. The more The market for Watson dries up.

Now you can sit here and go, Well, Rich, what are you talking about? How can the market for Deshaun Watson dry up at all?

Well, If I'm in the market for a quarterback, if I'm somebody that wants a quarterback. And needs one and needs to shop for one or acquire one, and there's a glut of them in there. And there's a ton of teams that need him in there. Ton. And somebody's going to want to beat someone to the Stafford punch.

That's a fact. Yep. And if the Jets are the team that Deshaun wants to go to, let's just throw that out there.

Okay. The Jets are the team Deshaun wants to go to. And the Jets say, okay, can we make this trade for Deshaun? No, we're going to try and work it out with Deshaun. We're going to try and blah, blah, blah, whatever.

I'm offering you these three ones. Do you think you can get a better deal for this at some point after you, Deshaun holds out, whatever? I've added it, you're going to go through all this. I gotta go get on Stafford. I got this deal for Stafford.

I got this deal from Ryan. I got this deal for name it. Jimmy G. I got a deal for Jimmy G. I got to take it.

I want your guy, and I know your guy doesn't want to be there, but this is it. I gotta go. Boom, jets are now removed off the market. That's what I'm saying.

Now is the time to strike. Boy, do they have to really get Get Deshaun in the fold fast. I know, you know, we got time, and I appreciate Ian saying that we have a show of note here that he was a guest on. And then if we're going to be up for talking about Deshaun Watson every day all the way through to March 17th, new league year, well, we're in luck, and this is our lucky day. I love it.

But man, you'd have to say that If you want to strike this deal, I got staff, I got to call, you know. Uh uh I got I got the lines on the other line here, man. Falcons on the line. I got the Falcons on the line here, man. The Niners on the line.

Yeah.

Texans are in a great position to regroup. I don't know about.

Well, they're in a great position to regroup and. And go for it. They need draft picks. They need capital. And they can hopefully do it behind the scenes where it doesn't splash any more mud on their organization and culling.

Nicholas and Marilyn, you're here on the Rich Island Show. What's up, Nicholas? Hey, what's up, Rich? I have a question regarding, obviously, Deshaun Watson. And so I'm a Barris fan.

Yes, sir. My birthday is on Monday.

So we have never had a quarterback in my nineteen years.

So I was wondering why is why are the Bears not being more involved in the media when it comes to getting Deshaun Watson or even just somebody like you were talking about, a different quarterback like Stafford?

Well, first of all, two things. Both of these quarterbacks need to be traded for. I would think the Lions will never trade Stafford and Division ever.

So that's a problem. If you want Stafford, you're going to have to hope for the Favre route, which is that some team like in the other conference has him for a year and then flips them your direction. That's how Favre wound up back in the NFC North.

So I think Stafford will. That ain't happening. The Lions will figure out a way to get Stafford somewhere else that they don't have to see him twice a year, I would suppose. Not really the one that I was going to say. No, I know Watson's a guy, too, but just the fact that Ryan Pace isn't talking about him in the media or.

Or Naggy's talking about him in the media or whatever doesn't mean that they're not working their tails off to go get him. The Jets aren't talking about Watson in the media. It's just that you're hearing some media member, you know, news, news, and information men and women saying they're hearing Watson likes the Jets. Yep. So I would not sit th the look.

I just don't know if Watson wants to go to Chicago. I don't know if the situation interests him. I have no earthly idea what he would like to actually do. You hear he loves the Jets, he loves Sal, and then you hear it's not a big deal. You hear he loves the Dolphins, and you're hearing it's not a big deal.

But definitely, he's got an eye. He definitely knows where he wants to go right now. That is a fact. I don't think he's just saying, trade me anywhere. I'm sure he's got a preference list somewhere and maybe somebody is talking about it.

And thank you for the call. I think the Bears' issue is do they have the do they have does any can anybody match what the Jets can offer? Can anybody match second overall selection in the draft, a first in the next two years after that, too? Three ones, and if something, you know, there's. There's more to it too.

Darnold as well. You like Darnold? We'll throw him in. I know the Jets probably deep down would love to separate the two deals. I bet you they'd love to flip Darnold for more draft capital that would replenish whatever they give up for Watson.

And the number one media market in the world, where you come here, and Victor Cruz is still salsa. Mm-hmm. And he wasn't even the top receiver on the Giants. You know, Bart Scott's got a national radio show because he was a great Raven. No, because he said, can't wait as a jack.

Can't wait. I'm serious. Like, that's what put Bart Scott on the map. That's what New York does for you. Strahan is, he'd be a Hall of Fame wherever he wants to go, right?

Wherever Strahan wound up, in my heart of hearts, I believe he's a Hall of Famer. Is he the Dick Clark of his generation if he if he played in... Even in Chicago. Probably.

Well, yeah, he's got an outstanding management team, which I can personally tell you about. But truly, you know. Indianapolis Colt Michael Strahan isn't. You can't say that for sure, but. I don't know if anybody can touch what the Jets could offer.

I don't know if Deshaun wants to go there. Or if the Texans are even interested in trading him within the conference. More on all of this with Chris Brockman's news update. Look at that picture of Rob Cordry when he was here. The great Rob Cordry, hour number three, as well.

Still here on our friends at Peacock, which again, if you are just new to us, where have you been? We've been on Peacock since August, and we have special just. Couple minute segments just for our friends on Peacock, including this very one we have. And Philadelphia Eagles fans, man, we'll talk about all that too coming up in the next hour. Obviously, next week, all of this gets wiped off the map.

That's why these teams did it today. Oh, yeah, yeah. I think the league also appreciates everybody. Can we you just settle all your family business in the bye week? We're focusing on the family business gets settled in the bye week.

Next week, it's strictly all about Super Bowl 55. And that is when I will next week, I know I keep threatening this. Monday show where we've got a whole extravaganza all week long because that's how we always roll on our Super Bowl. I'll hit you with all the storylines for Super Bowl 55. unpacking them all, So we've got Nick Siriani.

He's going to be part of your news update, right?

Some of the sound bites. We've got some sound from him.

Okay. I d I honestly do not know what he sounds like at all. I've never heard him talk. And the Philadelphia Eagles, they were definitely profitable. Probably 4x, 5x.

The number of members of the media that have ever probably been in front of him when the Indianapolis media talked to the offensive coordinator, when the OC was made available to the Colts media? Yeah.

There might have been like three people. Talking to him. Philadelphia is a totally different kettle of fish, man. You think? How many Bears fans have called this week saying, Well, what about the Bears in Watson?

Quite a few. Quite a few. Don't forget the Jets went Jamal Adams instead of taking Deshaun Watson. Bears traded up. For Trubisky.

Jets stayed put at six, took Jamal Adams. And then the next year took Darnold. And then the next year traded up from six to three with the Colts to take Darnold. Traded all a bunch of second rounders. And now, interestingly enough.

The jets can use the backstop of the first round selection that they got from Seattle this year. to buttress the trade that they can offer for Watson. Buttress. That's big word over there. Buttress the trade, everybody.

Big word or never heard that word. Comma. I've heard it. You've never heard the word buttress before? I've heard that before.

I haven't. A project, a projecting support of stone or brick against the wall. Buttress. Rob Cordry will buttress our third hour.
