We're glad that you're with us this week and we're doing something a little different.
This week for the show, we're having a lot of clips. I mean, we normally have about two per show, sometimes one. In a rare case, sometimes three. We're going to have a bunch. this time because the topic's called What are the clips that live rent-free in your head?
In other words, what are the things that you hear that God works on you with? Clips from, I tried to say movies and TV shows, but no one really picked any TV shows. Anybody that I've talked to, it's usually a movie. It's usually something to do with the movie because maybe they build up more of a back. Story or something like that, but all mine just kept coming back to Ted Lasso's still relatively new.
Oh, that's true. There are some good there's good ones on Ted Lasso clips. I've got a lot of Ted Lasso clips. Yeah, yeah, and I've used some of them when they're playing darts and those kind of things. But I sent it out to our our listeners and people on our um email group.
From the boot camps, and so anyone that's on our email group, I sent it out. And some of the people replied and gave us their clip and how God uses it. And so we're going to play some of those and talk about how God uses it for them. The first clip we have. It's it's kinda I put it in the folder, but I think any one of us could speak to it.
And uh it's from The movie um City Slickers. Thank you. City Slickers with Billy Crystal and Jack Palance is in this clip. And it's about these guys that go out to the West and they're going to herd cattle as part of a adventure to find themselves. Yeah, it's a dude ranch.
And so we're going to pick up when Jack Palance, the guy leading the thing, is talking to Billy Crystal. Do you know what the secret of life is? No, what? This Your finger? One thing.
Just one thing. That's great, but What's the one thing? That's what you gotta figure out.
So, anyone want to speak to that clip? I know I can say something about it, but Robby, I know you like this clip as well. Do you have anything you'd like to say about it? Yeah, how many times does God think that he's playing the part of Jack Palance? I mean, it's just, you know, that's my thought.
I love the invitation, right? That's what you've got to figure out. And. She did. The beauty of figuring that out is it's a team experience.
Uh you know, I can't tell you how many times I've prayed like God, I really need to know, you know, what this Particular show is going to be about, or what I need to do in this relationship. What's my next step here? And he's like, well, that's what you need to figure out. And the beauty of that is he knows. Yeah.
Right? If he told Robby, look, this is what your sermon needs to be about, it'd be, go get him, Tiger. He wouldn't hear from me again for the next, you know. Three weeks, or whatever time it would be, but again, because of the invitation to go. walk with him in that.
Uh it ends up with some of the best times of my life, really. Yeah, absolutely. I I like the clip from the standpoint that makes you constantly have to look at what is your priority. Mm-hmm. Right, because it seems like life is constantly throwing choices at us.
Yeah, right, and sometimes they're not good and bad choices, they could be good and good choices, but there's probably a good and a better. And it's a good way to kind of look at that and say, okay, what's the most important thing here for me? You know, long term in my life to go do. I don't know. I mean, somebody early on in my Christian life as an adult.
Um Told me to look at things differently, and I don't even remember who it was and exactly how they. said it, but it was basically this question If you're trying to figure out, you know, is it a priority? Should I worry about that? Should I be upset about that? Those sorts of things, right?
The question is really Am I going to be upset about this in five years? Mm-hmm. In ten years, is that going to bother me? In twenty years, is that going to bother me? If Jesus came back tomorrow, would that bother me?
And so that really helps you narrow down to what's the one thing today? Right. You know? Yeah. Or in this th this minute sometimes.
Absolutely.
Well, I'm going to go to a clip from one of our People on our email list, and they sent it to me. And it's from Sean in North Carolina, and it's from the movie Slingblade. And so I'm going to go ahead and play it. If you've never seen it, it's about a guy that. Probably isn't all there mentally, right?
But he's just doing his best. He's a good guy, trying to get through life. Gets picked on a lot, but he's just a good man. And so here he's at a mechanic shop. They're looking at a lawnmower and they call him over to look at it because it's not wanting to start.
Yeah. Call, see if you can figure out what's wrong with this thing. It won't crank up and everything seemed to be put together right. It ain't got no gas in it. You see their scooter?
Things are the simplest things first. And so when he said Slingblade, and I hadn't listened to the clip yet, I went and found it. I'm like, really? Really? Sling blade?
But then I read why he it means something to him. He said he hears it most mornings. He thinks of that because it lets him simplify his life. before it gets really complicated. to think about the things that are really important to him.
and try to keep the focus on those as this day gets very complicated as it goes on. And so I just thought it's really cool how God will use a clip that most people would go, eh, all right, whatever. Then it just strikes a chord with somebody. And it stays with them, and it's something that God uses to remind them of things that he wants them to remember. You guys are shaking your head, you can't hear that on the radio.
I'm just thinking, you know, not over-spiritualize it, but it's like you don't have enough God in you, right? It's empty. And that is that priority. I wouldn't have thought about it like that, but you can definitely look at it like that. It's just uh You were saying about priorities or whatever, but of the day or whatever.
But what is the priority of the day to start it with God? And a lot of times we enter the day with no gas. That's right, absolutely. Ain't got no gas in it. Anyway, I can't do Slingblade.
Andy, I think was yours Rudy or was Darren's Rudy or whose was Rudy? I'll put Rudy out there.
Okay, well, I'm not going to play it. I just want. No, go ahead. It's not a big deal. I I I think uh that's a favorite of whose, somebody else.
I'm assuming yours since it's in there. Yeah, it was I mean it's it's out there and it's something that you know you definitely it it's from Rudy. Rudy's trying to figure out out things, trying to juggle being a walk-on at Notre Notre Dame and keep up with classes and get his, I think, scholarship or whatever to pay for School and all, and he's just got all this pressure on him. And he goes to this priest, and this is the conversation. Maybe I haven't prayed enough.
I'm sure that's not the problem. Printing is something we do in our time. The answer's come in God's time. Have I done everything I possibly can? Can you help me?
Son. and 35 years of religious studies. I've come up with only two hard, incontrovertible facts. There is a god? Mm-hmm.
I'm not him. You know, it's just one of those basic things that you got to get back to of alignment. of what God's role is and what ours is, and we get those out of whack. And whenever we're not getting an answer to a prayer, we think something's out of balance, but it could be God has you right where you need to be. And I think that was what Rudy's case was.
Well, God used that clip for my brother's salvation. That's right. I was one of them. I knew it. I knew it.
It was something important. I don't know your remote. Glad you're here. What happened was, we were doing an advanced boot camp. My brother came to it.
And I had the sage talk. And I talked about how a sage's job is essentially a point man, point to God, and this is what this priest did. He just pointed out there is a God and I'm not him. Oh my brother Been to a boot camp, been struggling with his faith, trying to figure out where he stood. And I get a text from him about an hour out of boot camp.
I'm all messed up. I can't drive. I got to pull over on the side of the road. I'm bawling, there is a God, and I'm not him. And It was just one of the most remarkable events.
Between him and his grandson. And they both got, both came to faith that day. They both. made remarkable changes in their life. as a result of God using that clip.
There is a God, and I'm not him. And by the way, that's a fundamental understanding. Yeah. It's pretty basic, yeah. But.
I can't tell you how many times I think about it. There is a God, you know, and I'm not Him. And how many times do we try to play that role? You know. I heard another guy told me this week, he said, you know, my biggest problem with God is he thinks he's God.
And it's the same kind of thing. Like, yeah. I thought that was a quote from 1 Herald 1:1 because he's the one that I hear say it the most. Yeah. Which is good because he's closest to God's age.
God was our group. That's true. He knew God personally. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He got it face to face.
Yeah, he's just outside the garden when I was walking. On the fringe. But I need to hear that. Yeah, go for it, Harold. Do we respond, Harold?
Do we just throw them throwing you under the bus here?
Well, I think it's great.
Well, thank you. I'm going to use another clip that when somebody sent it to me, it's Steve from Ohio. It's a friend of ours from up there. And this is something that was from his childhood, that he used a lot in his childhood. And I'll tell you more about it here in a second, but it's from Rambo, and I'm just going to play it.
It's over, Johnny. It's over! Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off!
I forgot how good an actor was. Nothing is over. And nobody laughed that hard at the theater. I mean, I remember seeing that. Yeah.
And I wasn't laughing, but man, that's funny. Yeah. Well, when you look back and you're like, oh, that was really bad. Yeah. You know, but at the time, you're like, yeah, it's pretty good.
Enough that they did like 20 of them or something. I don't know. Yeah, but the whole point of nothing is over, I mean, you know, we as human beings find it so difficult to let go of things. Right. So he proved there was nothing was over the way towards that town.
Yeah. Man.
Well, Steve was talking about that when that movie came out, he was a kid, and his friends and him would go out in the woods and they'd play Rambo. And they'd use that quote over and over: nothing is over, right? And he said it meant so much to him along the years, and it had so much fun because it wasn't video games, it wasn't cell phones, it wasn't all that kind of stuff, that he enjoyed it. They told his kids about it, all the fun that his friends and he would have. And as I kind of emailed back and forth with him, you know, we talked about that that was God just raising him up in a way for adventure, for battle, for adventure.
To have persistence to persevere. Yeah. Endeavor. Yeah. Yeah.
Endeavor to persevere. Yeah, that's a good one. You may hear side quotes along those references to other movies. But if you've listened to the show long, you know exactly what that movie is. We probably used it on 15 different shows, I'm thinking.

Welcome back to Masco and Journey. I'm just sitting here talking and not realizing no one can hear me but me, which is pretty much most of how I feel most of the time. Anyway, no, that's an agreement. I won't make that one. quotes, I'd like to tell you it's something that guys most often do.
I think it's something that more times than not men do. But I think it also has to do not only with your gender, but also with your upbringing. 'Cause all my kids quote movies all the time. You know, and that's partly because I quote movies all the time, but it's a lot of fun that we have together. You know, when when something comes up and we can laugh at it.
Right. Can I can I take off here for just a second?
Well, if you want to leave, go ahead. You know, just just I mean, I o everything I submitted was stuff that I had picked up since I had come to to the masculine journey and all the while at heart, boot camps and stuff been to and and I didn't know a lot of these movies. I had a very select thing, you know, some stuff from Rocky and maybe Star Wars or You know, but there's so many, and I think princess diaries. No, that's Jim. Don't you associate me with that.
But I guess the thing is, there's a lot of truth in these movies. That's why we played the clips. And you have these iconic quotes encapsulated within the clips. And I guess the point I'm trying to make is that these do really impact our lives. I didn't grow up around quoting movies as much or anything, or that wasn't a thing, but it has become part of it quite a bit.
And and there are things, you know, the whole idea. I think Darren has the clip out there: Open War is upon you whether you would risk it or not. The biggest teacher to me, one of the things that opened me up to spiritual warfare in the. And the way that it's taught within Wild at Heart is comes from that. Lord of the Rings, uh two towers.
So anyway. Just wanted to throw that out there. I appreciate that. got entrenched in in me. It was in college.
'Cause when I was in college, VCRs had just come out and you could go to a place and rent. things and my friends and I rented Caddyshack. I must have rented it 15 times and watched it probably 40 times. You know, I can still quote just about every line from that movie. You know, and that's just what we did.
Friday night, we'd go to the video store, that, stripes, everything was out of that era. Yeah, um meatballs, you know, some of the ones. And you can just quote 'em. You know, because it was part of your, as you're coming into manhood or already into manhood, and they just kind of meant something. It brings back special memories.
Yeah, my kids and I quote stuff we watched a lot with them and it not only makes us laugh, but it takes us back to that memory point. You know, things that we've done together. But I'm gonna play a clip from you, Darren. Do you wanna say anything about it before I I play it?
Well, I could talk about it, but people probably couldn't handle it, so go ahead and play it. Here we go. Colonel Justin, did you order the code ray? You don't have to answer that question. I'll answer the question.
You want answers? I think I'm entitled. You want answers? I want the truth! You can't handle the truth!
I remember watching that movie the first time. And that line was just so powerful. And At the time, I would quote it, or almost everybody walking around would, hey, tell me really what that, well, you can't handle the truth. And we kind of make fun of it.
Well, now. as a father and a grandfather. Um There are often times when people will ask me, well, what do you think about? Or, da da da da, what do you, you know, what should I. And that quote comes back to me.
Now, I don't usually scream at them that they can't handle the truth, but it does go through my mind, and I'm like, okay, how much of the truth can they handle right now? And what it brings me to is, Jesus actually says this. I have much more to tell you. But you can't handle it right now. I mean, he doesn't say it exactly like that.
That's Darren's paraphrase. It was the Jack Nicholson version of scripture, yeah. But yeah, I mean, that's. We're that way. People we deal with are that way.
And I you know, wisdom is trying to figure out What can a person handle?
Now, I'm not talking about deceiving people at all. I'm just. I used to be the guy that gave you the whole truth. And it usually, you know, people walked away screaming or throwing things at me or, you know, mad, or man, I'm never asking that guy again, that sort of thing. I've matured a little bit.
A little bit. I agree. And I'm I'm the s third oldest here, I think, in the group. But in getting older, well, it'd be Harold and you than me. As I thought about art's a year younger than me.
But yeah, yeah, I just look really bad. But no, as you get older, there's a weird thing that happens. You get more discerning. But you just don't care. You know, and that's.
That's a really weird thing to try to battle in your head. You're like, I'm just me, you know, and I'm just going to say what I think. And, you know, I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, but I don't want to pose either. You know, it but you are I mean you're more discerning, but at some level you're just like, eh, whatever. That brings up about thirty-seven clips from Fried Green Tomatoes, actually.
Yeah, it does. It does. Harold, what's some clips that you like really You remember and you go back to. They didn't talk in those original. Oh, that's right.
They weren't talkies back then. Yeah, that's right. They were just music bites, right? Vaudeville. Yeah, I like a lot of the ones out of planes, trains, and automobiles.
Yeah. Those aren't pillows? No. You know, what's the temp? One.
Oh.
Okay. Yeah. I'm I'm trying to think. Oh yeah, well you know you love the you love Secondhand Lions. That's one of your favorite movies as well.
Oh yeah. For sure. Probably my favorite. is the one where Hubb tells the guy that He's only loved one woman. Mm-hmm.
And um A flea like you would never understand. Yeah, that's probably my favorite movie clip. Thank you for reminding me. Yeah, one of my favorite things that happened on this show has to do with you. That movie clip in Andy.
Yes. When it was Harold's birthday one time, Andy took that saying, that dialogue, that paraphrase thing, and I don't know what I'm trying to say. It's a long speech. that the hub has for the boys and completely nails it and makes it about Harold. It is such an amazing thing, and it hit Harold to the T.
I mean, it was everything about him. It was one of my favorite things on the show.
So, if you haven't done that, go look up Harold's birthday. Listen to that particular. particular show. But, Art, I'm gonna turn to you. You gotta have movie clips that you like, man.
I mean, you put one in the top in the group. Yeah, and you got to get on the screen so people can see the art. Movie clips, that was endeavor to persevere, Wanda said that. It's a work of art. It is.
Yeah, we'll go back to, you know. Where are they? We'll go back to my word of the year there with that. And I'm endeavoring to persevere and. Right now we're trying to persevere through this drought we're having in North Carolina and Trying to keep the cows fed, and it's uh I had to change a few things around to make some forage for 'em in the summertime, but um So it's it's always I guess it's uh trials and tribulations, the Bible says.
There's there's one after another. That you have to persevere through in this life. I guess there there's another uh Josie Wells uh Quote, that's not Jesse Wales, it's one of the other. It's a Clint Eastwood quote from one of the other Westerns. He says, I feel that a man such as yourself can manage it.
Well, I just like that saying.
Okay. I thought it was right turn Clyde. I didn't. Oh, yeah. Oh, that was it.
Yeah. Yeah. Every which way but loose. I remember that one. I'm going to go back.
We have a lot of clips we could play from Bagger Bands. We actually have a few of them here. I'm going to play one that I put in there because this is my original thing that I picked. that I wanted to talk about the most, because it's one I come back to quite often. And what's going on in the movie, if you haven't seen it, is Bagger, the Caddy, who's really a Holy Spirit character, Jesus character, and that is helping.
What's his name? Matt Damon's picture. Juna, Juna. Juna. Juna.
Yeah, Juna gets past some woundedness in his life. And this is where they have a very direct conversation. And I want you to listen to what he says, and I'll come back and tell you why. What I'm talking about is a game. Game that can't be won.
Only plague. You don't understand? I don't need to understand. And soul on this entire earth ain't got a burden to carry, he don't understand. You ain't alone in that.
But you've been carrying this one long enough. Time to go on. Lay it down. It's that second part of that for me that really hits. You know, it's not the I don't need to understand, but it's the everyone, everyone has a burden to carry they don't understand.
Because it reminds me that I get stuck in in the enemy's loop. fearfulness Feeling like um I should be able to understand what I'm going through. What is this? What's this all about? You know, and I think of this quite often.
It's like, no, I just have to give whatever it is to God. I'm not going to understand everything that happens in my life. Probably not going to understand most things. that happened in my life, but God does. And so it lets me re know that I have to remember to just let go.
and just relax. You know, there's times, and it's been more and more as I've gone through my life. I'd say this last year I've done that more than ever. Just saying, okay, can I do anything to impact it? Yeah.
Okay, then I'm just gonna let go and It'll be what it'll be. But we love the movie Bagger Vance. It's one that we use a lot of quotes from. But anyway, I gotta find another clip, so when you guys have to talk while I'm doing something here for a second.
Well What you just said is is huge. I have found myself praying more and more over the last probably just few months. Yeah. A phrase that sounds something like this: God, I don't have to understand it. I just.
I just need help. I don't have to understand it. I just need you to Do what you want to do. I don't have to understand my wounding. I don't have to understand my, even, you know, to some extent, I need to understand my repentance.
But I find myself doing that a lot, and I think it was G.K. Chesterton that basically laid out the idea. That if you must understand everything about God, you will know nothing about God. Um and and we fall into that pursuit a lot. Um I like the way you enunciated Chesterton.
