Good morning, everybody. Welcome into the Winklerverse. I'm Bart Winkler. It is Sunday morning, August 2nd. You may have seen the news last night, or you woke up to it today, Tarek Skubel.
Is going to be a Los Angeles Dodger. The Tigers Ace, who is in an expiring contract year, is going to the Dodgers instead of the Brewers. Man, instead of any other team. This is something that I was getting more optimistic that maybe the Brewers could pull this off. But The Dodgers were still going to be that boogeyman that.
Is able to afford this more than any other team, not just from the finances. I think there's a weird. Kind of like pushback that no, this isn't the trade that's going to end baseball. This isn't the trade that's going to end baseball, but it's the trade that confirms that baseball is going to have a lockout next year. And as I've been talking about.
Baseball wants a lockout. At least the owners do. The owners want a lockout because the owners want a salary cap. The owners want a salary cap. They do.
Because they don't want to pay as much money. To the players. as they are currently playing.
Now, there may be some owners that are super cheap and don't want any of this change because then that means they have to have a salary floor. That's probably gonna be a part of it. But a lot of these owners that are paying, like I've said, $530 million or even $340 or $290 million for their payroll. They want to pay $230 million for the same payroll. They still want the guys.
They still want a good team. But if they could Lower the cost of what they're paying, they would prefer that very, very much. They would prefer that very much.
So, this is not the owners don't want. A salary cap because they want things to be more competitive. They want a salary cap because they want to make more money. And the less money you pay players, the more money that can go into the pocket of the owners. Again, salary cap is what they want, profitability cap is not what they want.
The lower the salaries are, the more the owners are going to make.
So, when you look at this trade and people are going to freak out and say this is the end of baseball, I've already seen some pushback. That is wrong. Because why the Dodgers are able to do this trade is because they don't care about these prospects. They don't care about these prospects the way the Brewers care about these prospects. The Brewers care about these prospects because to be competitive, they need to invest in that farm system.
They need these guys to be good and then they need them to succeed. The Dodgers have a farm system that is only there to trade with other teams. And then if they get into a Like a quagmire, that's the word I thought of. If they get into a circumstance where, oh no, we have no one in the farm system, well, we have a shitload of money. We'll just go get a new free agent.
or we'll buy somebody. You know, so there's different avenues that the Dodgers, they have money. Which means that they don't care about the farm system as much. Sure, they might have a guy come up, and okay, the Dodgers have a good prospect. You know, they're not immune to that, but also they don't rely on it like some of these other teams, specifically the Brewers, rely on it.
I mean, the Brewers' big acquisitions over the last few years, the big contracts they've given out are to Cooper Pratt and to Luis Lara and to Jackson Churio. It's the guys that they have developed in their farm system. That's where the money is going. And they're even giving these guys money, not knowing like. Yeah, if Cooper Pratt's really good, if Lara's really good, if I mean Churio's been good, but if these guys don't pan out, the Brews are still on the hook for that money.
But that's the risk they have to take. That's where things are.
So the Dodgers, this is absolutely. This is absolutely a trade that highlights the inequities. of Major League Baseball. Forrest says, Don't you feel like the owners are doing this intentionally to force a lockout? No top five prospect for Scoobel.
The brewers went off for more than that. And I'll get to some of the specifics of this in a second. But I do think, and this is what I've talked about last week, I do think if the Tigers' ownership or any of these teams' ownerships have push come to shove, and it's an equal offer from the Dodgers and the Brewers, they're going to be more prone to trade with the Dodgers. Because if the Dodgers win again, the outcry is going to be real and it's going to be louder, and fans are going to be like, we're tired of this. If the Brewers win, it's an example of: see, we don't need a salary cap, other teams can still win.
So I absolutely. I absolutely think. That the owners If they're not going to win. They want The Dodgers to win because they want a strike. They want a lockout.
They want things to change. And so do fans.
So our our reasons for the Salary cap are different, but we want it without a lockout. They seem to want it with a lockout. Corey says people are losing their minds about the disparity in baseball economics, but then hate on Francesca Hong. Yeah. Yeah.
Well, people people have a hard time People have a hard time thinking about sports in one way. And then Politics in another, like economics of real life. They have a hard time thinking about economics and sports. They can't do that. Al says, I hate that this happened, but as Brewers fans, we should already know we're never winning a World Series until there is a salary cap.
So this is good for us in the long run. What might be better is if we got Tarek Skubel And then won a World Series. with him.
So we'll go through the specifics of this trade. The Dodgers and the Tigers in this trade that was dealt. And I've got some audio to play. I want to give you Trevor McGill's comments from last night. Via Adam McKelvey, who was in the locker room, because the brewers were aware of this as this was going on.
The Angels broadcast. Had a few things to say. Here's the trade from the perspective of a popular Twitter account, baseball trade values. I'll throw this up on the screen. Um, let's see here.
I just need to share screen. And I've done this a million times, so it shouldn't be that hard. The Dodgers acquiring Tarek Skubel, $30 million surplus trade value from the Tigers for Zaheer Hope, the outfielder. Uh Brady Smith. And River Ryan, this deal is accepted.
Buy our model as a moderate underpay. By Los Angeles. Hope is a solid center piece, clear top 50 prospect with a big league future. One's opinion on this deal likely hinges on River Ryan. He's talented, but is about to turn 28.
And only as 20. Major league innings under his belt. Our model doesn't see much value, but the Tigers likely do.

You're trading for a 28-year-old, and if there's no baseball next year, Then uh then he's going to be 30 by the time that he can play again. And I don't like that. That doesn't sound good. So now that I've said that. Take a deep breath because Mark Feinstein has reported that Tarek Scobel has been traded. To the Dodgers. Yeah. Incredible.
Tell you that Shohei might not be. Pitching a whole lot here in the end. Foul ball. Yeah, that's probably true. But once again the Dodgers step up they get the big fish And you just wonder, we'll find out here soon what the return was.
But why couldn't a team like the Brewers or the Braves or whoever? Step in and keep the Dodgers. It's just an open market. Anybody can go and get school, but this is not about. Money.
This is about trading prospects. And How could these other teams allow that to happen? Especially when you think about the Brewers and all the incredible prospects they have. Uh Swinging a miss by Ortiz and Matera just striking dudes out. That's four in a row.
Look at another filthy slider. Mm-hmm.
So the sediment there is why can't the brewers make this deal? Why does it have to be the Dodgers that make this deal? Why can't this be? The brewers. And I think that's very unfair.
That's very unfair. That's very unfair. That's a very unfair sentiment. The Brewers obviously want Scoobel. They've been talking to the Tigers about Scoobel reportedly.
They would love to get Scoobel. But again, if you want somebody, someone from somebody, it takes. It takes two to tango. I just hate that phrase, but it does take two to tango. Or the movie Three to Tango.
Was Matthew Perry in that one, R. I. P. Um Again, I don't think. that the I don't think that the Dodgers Or the Tigers, I should say.
Wanted to trade Scoobel to anybody but the Tigers. And maybe Scoobel had a say in it, but I don't think they wanted to trade Scoobel to anybody but the Tigers or to the Dodgers. I think that the Tigers ownership, they see the writing on the wall. These other owners, you might see this with other trades. You might see The brewers not be able to get people because of the way that, like this lockout.
I keep talking about this lockout is. The Brewers should go all in. They should go all in because you'll have time to replenish. You should go all in. You're faced against this deadline.
What I failed to consider earlier was that maybe teams don't want to trade with the Brewers. Maybe they don't want a small market team. If a small market team like the Brewers, Not even small market, but a team that can't afford what the Dodgers can. If they win the World Series, it's just going to highlight that maybe we don't need a salary cap. But if the Dodgers win.
All of the public sentiment is going to be with the owners. All of the public sentiment is going to be with the owners. They want a lockout because they want a salary cap. The quickest way to get the public on your side is for the Dodgers to win the World Series. Again.
So the Brewers might not be able to get anybody. It has to be them against the world at this point.
Now they got uh Who'd they trade for? Bone Eiler. We got Bo Nailer.
Okay, so so Cleveland's going to give us Bone Ailer. MC says, I hate when they say this isn't about money, it's all about money. The Dodgers don't have to care about prospects because they have all the money. People are so stupid when it comes to baseball. Greg says, Some things are bigger than the Illinois-Wisconsin border wars.

There will be a top in the bottom of the salary cap, and the teams that don't spend money now will always be at the bottom and consistent losers. It does not fix. Parity, if implemented, the majority of World Series winners will come from the top end of the team salary cap, no different from the top teams winning now. I would agree with that. I think that we think the salary cap is going to mean that the Pirates win a World Series, or that the Brewers can finally win a World Series, or that the Rays will get to win a World Series instead of just getting there.
That's not what any of this means. It means that the rich teams will still spend the most money. They'll just have a limit, which means the money that would have gone to the players is going to go in the owners' pockets. The owners only want a salary cap to make more money. That's all this is.
That's all this is. Dope Hat, is it available in brewers' colors? Not right now, but I will make it so. Everyone is already on the owner's side from Tyler, right, but for the wrong reasons. For the wrong reasons.
Vincent says, I'm team player union strong. Yeah, well. We're not, I mean, the players are going to lose. the owners are going to get a salary cap. The players are going to fight like hell against it.
Eventually they will have to cave. The owners will get their way. They always do. They're going to get their way. There's going to be a salary cap.
They're going to get their way. But for this to actually happen, there's going to need to be the tug of war. And we're probably going to lose a year of baseball. Nightingale had a tweet this morning, Bob Nightingale, that a lot of owners just expect. Like there's no owner that really thinks we're going to play baseball.
I don't. We're going to have a COVID year at the most, 60 games. or some weird like little truncated season. That schedule that came out for next year, do not book your trips around it. Baseball is.
This is not going to be a pretty fight. Not at all. Uh some other things I wanted to play here. Or at least bring to your attention. Adam McKelvey tweeted this.
I was asked about a relative comp to the package the Dodgers gave up for three months of scuba. And the response I'm getting is Logan Henderson, Luis Pena. And then either Bishop Letson or Josh Knoth. That would have been a better package. For the Tigers.
than what they got from the Dodgers. And here's another piece of bullshit. in this matter. Another piece of bullshit in this matter is It seemed like, and I've seen reports on this, that Logan Henderson was the tie up.
Okay, that the Brewers didn't want to part with Logan Henderson, who a lot of us like. And the Tigers were incessant. that they get Logan Henderson. I don't think.
So here's where you're going to hear that information. You're going to read it as this. You're going to read it as. It's the brewer's fault. They wouldn't give up Logan Henderson.
What if this was the scenario? What if the Tigers know that the Brewers don't want to give up Logan Henderson? And then they say, it's got to be Logan Henderson. And the brewers say no. But then what if the brewers say yes?
Because then the tigers are probably going to be like, okay, well, now we also want this guy. My feeling is The Tigers were never going to give Scoobel to the Brewers. And the reports coming out are going to make the brewers look like the bad guy. That's also a big part of this. A big part of this is.
Don't give the small market team. The big stud at the trade deadline, but also make them look bad in the process. Make them look like baseball is crumbling because of their cheapness and their poorness. Make the poor person look like the bad guy. That's what they're doing.
That is what they are doing. They are using the Brewers to vilify us and vilify all of the teams that can't afford it, like the Dodgers. They were never going to give Tarek Skubel. To the Brewers. ever.
And in the process, they're going to make us look like the bad guy.
So that you side with the rich. That's what's happening here. That is what's going on. The Detroit Tigers were never, ever, ever, ever going to trade Terek Schugel to the Brewers. They were always going to trade him to the Dodgers, and they're going to make the Brewers.
Look bad and make it look like it's their fault because this is all premeditated and it's all bullshit to get us on the rich people's side. It's bullshit. It's all a bunch of bullshit. Anything else that I have in my saved things on Twitter that I wanted to share? There's that puddle of mud song.

Is that part of the? I don't think it's that way anymore. Maybe, maybe my first year when I was here, but you know, now there's a target on the back, and people, you know, know what to expect a little bit more. Yeah, it's just. Just the way it's been the last couple of years.
One of those teams in the front that everybody's looking to knock out, isn't it kind of fitting though? On the night that they trade for school, you guys overtake until the best rookie in baseball again. I don't think that matters as we saw last year. You know, it's going to matter when it comes down, you know, October 15th, whenever that series is.
So. Yeah, it is what it is and good for them. You know, they certainly got the pieces to make a trade for that, and so do we, but it seems like they got their first.
So it is what it is. To have you and Habner. pitching well you know the I don't know how you feel about the workload. Do you feel like you are both?
well positioned with two months of regular season games to go to. Get to the finish line right where you need to be. 100%. You know, um. Guys down there have been polling for each other all season.
There's a big workload between you know me, me Ashby and your eBay and GA down there. All right, that's just a bunch of uh Other stuff that is important to the season, but not to why I'm doing this on a Sunday morning. Bobby says: Why would the team with the best pitching staff in baseball already acquire the best pitcher on the trademark? Only reason I can think of is to prevent other teams from getting him. I think that's a large part of it, Bobby.
That's a good thought. I also think that they're going to do what they did last year. They're not going to They're not going to pitch Scubal like they might go every six days with him. Like last year, we were beating Emmett Sheehan. We were beating whoever else they were throwing out, but then we lost to Otani and we lost to May and we lost to Snell.

Mm-hmm, mm-mm-mm-hmm. And I had an idea that I think what they could do when they talk about stuff like the stadium naming rights. You should have a local company. buy the rights to the you know the naming rights and not change it. But then like Everybody will know that you're the company that saved them from changing the name, so you'll still get all the PR and the good benefits of it.
You put your logo all around the stadium, it's still just Lambeau Field, it's not Lambeau Field presented by Miller Light or whatever it is, but um, you'll still, it's like uh, you know, it's a total PR move, but I think it would be cool. Like, yeah, we did this to save it because we are different, like, that would be a great move for a company.
So you just want to tell, you don't have any, Scoobel doesn't matter to you? No, like, okay. I'll tell you what, though, I'm more jazzed about the Brewers. Then I've been in a long time. Yeah, I mean, it's a funny thing.
We're America's team. If we can get there, it's us against the world. The Brewers are never going to have more support. But again, we got to get there. I think we all assume.
that we're going to be in the NLCS against the Dodgers again. We still have to get We still have to get a lot of ball game left. And you know, you don't want to give up Logan Henderson.
So people are upset about that. And it's like.
Okay, you don't want to get up Logan Henderson to get to the table. But even if they would have given him up, the Dodgers, the Tigers wouldn't have taken him. Probably not. But also, he's pitching as good as Tarek Schubel right now. Be it.
Like the people just want to move for the sake of the move, forgetting that, by the way, did you know the Brewers have the best record at baseball right now?
So like if this isn't 2008, where we haven't made the playoffs in 25 years or whatever the hell it was and we got to get over the top, like, no, like they're, they're up at the top now. You don't just do it because those prospects are burning a hole in your pocket. They got to where they are because they have a formula and they stick to it. It very much reminds me of the Ted Thompson-era Packers where you hear all this noise, free agency, Trey, why aren't we doing more? And you just stick to what works.
And that ultimately is what allowed them to sustain their success. Shit. I wonder if, because I really think that a lot of these owners. Want A cap, obviously.
So they want a lockout if that's going to be the means to an end. But are there some of these smaller market clubs that don't want it? Are there some smaller market clubs that don't want it? Because a salary cap is probably going to come with a salary floor.
So, could we get some of these cheap ass owners? To like give us their prospects or their guys for nickels on the dollar or something. I mean we team up with some of these. teams and who would those teams even be?
Well, in general, you know, nothing's gonna... ever pass with 100% flying colors. I think it will, you're true cheap skate owners, that'll get them out. But I also think that. It could just be a negotiating ploy.
Like, you don't really want to sell your team because you're too cheap to get to the salary floor.
So, yeah, it'll force them to it. Um but I'm in favor for it. I don't know what it exactly looks like at the other side. I do worry a little bit because the brewers have found a really nice niche on how to. Um kind of use certain rules to their advantage and expose things.
You know, they have done an amazing job with their international scouting. I know they want to go to getting the international players included in the draft, which maybe that hurts what the Brewers do a little bit.
