The NFL has disciplined the Miami Dolphins by taking away two draft picks, including a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 third-round pick in the NFL Draft. But the NFL said there were no findings to claims made by former coach Brian Flores regarding tampering.

Also, more discussions about the 6-game suspension for Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson, and how the NFL has a window to appeal Sue L. Robinson's decision.

This is the best of the Adam Gold Show Podcast. Brought to you by Coach Pete at Capital Financial Advisory Group.

Visit us at capitalfinancialusa.com. This is the Adam Gold Show. You're late. What the hell are you doing here? I thought you were playing hockey or what?

The ball's cold. Arthur fell ill. Why are the shutters closed? Someone jammed gum in the lugs. Bunch of savages in this town.

That's what I said. Oochy noochies. Alright guys, you have your mission, go forth and wreak havoc. Bye baby kitties.

Damn, salt bottle, show some heart. What's better? We're on the job. This is the Adam Gold Show. We've just become a haven for Kevin Smith movie drops.

And? No, I'm not against it. I'm totally for it. I'm waiting for Dogma to show up.

Oh, it will one day. Love Dogma. My favorite Kevin Smith movie. It's the Adam Gold Show, I'm Adam Gold, Dennis Cox is here.

He met Kevin Smith on Saturday, so still a little afterglow, nice flush. Thanks. I understand. I totally get it. I felt this way after I met Daryl Strawberry.

Okay then. Daryl and I hugged it out at the Super Bowl a bunch of years ago. Gosh, he was my guy as a kid growing up. I hugged it out with Kevin Smith. There you go. I absolutely can feel your euphoria.

I can 100% empathize with the adrenaline that must have been flowing through your body when you met Kevin Smith. I get it. I am not throwing shade at all. I can feel it. It's a cool thing, I believe.

I've always said this. It's a cool thing to be passionate about certain things. Certain things that might otherwise you don't need to be passionate about, but it's good to be. There is a pushback on fandom at times. Yeah. I think you could take it too far. You could take fandom too far. Sure. I don't want, for anyone, I don't want you to assign your identity to the success or failure of your favorite team.

That, I think, is too far. But I think it's a good thing to immerse yourself in it and to allow yourself to be a fan. And to truly, like the outcome should matter.

Because it makes it more fun. Will there be heartbreak? Yeah. There will be heartbreak. But man, if you allow yourself to wash yourself with it, there's nothing better. There is nothing better than that. As a fan. As a sports fan.

Or whatever. As a movie fan. As a Kevin Smith fan.

As a comic book fan. Yeah. Imagine yourself, Dennis, as the Silver Surfer. Man.

I don't know. I'm serving a bad guy to try and also save the planet. I have no idea if the Silver Surfer is good or bad.

Is the Silver Surfer good? He is, but he helps a bad person in order to save. It's the catch-22.

In order to save people, I must help this bad person. Learn something new every day. Alright. Today, there is a lot.

Let's go. The head of... Oh my gosh. Before we get to the news of the day, which is a lot of the same stuff from the news of the day yesterday. The NFL handed down their ruling on the Miami Dolphins. Oh.

And Brian Flores. I just got the email. Okay. Today, like minutes ago, I'm still sort of digesting what they said, but there were two things at play with the... I guess the NFL versus the Miami Dolphins. There were Brian Flores allegations that Stephen Ross offered him $100,000 per loss to lose games, right? They were to tank for whatever.

A better draft position. So there were those allegations. Remember when Brian Flores was fired, he brought those allegations to the world. The NFL basically said, yeah, we're not buying it. Ah, Stephen Ross wasn't supposed, wasn't to be taken seriously.

I'll pay you $100,000 to lose a game. He was kidding. Their ruling. There were, however, tampering allegations made against the Dolphins that date all the way back to when Tom Brady was with the Patriots. Yeah. Brady's last season with New England, which was what, the 20 or the 19 season?

Yeah, 19. Before that season started, they could, they traced contact between the Dolphins and Brady about ultimately leaving New England after that year and coming to Miami. He's under contract with the Patriots. And then throughout the two years with Tampa, there was more contact.

As a result, the Dolphins lose next year's first round pick and the following year's third round pick. There you go. So, but they wrote there.

It looks to me like I've read through this. It looks to me like there's no penalty at all for whatever Brian Flores is alleging. No penalty for that. There were fines.

Stephen Ross was suspended from owning until the middle of October. I have no idea what that means. Yeah. You can't be in the team facilities. So, okay. Stay on your boat.

Stay on your yacht. Watch. Like, I don't understand how you suspend somebody from owning. Okay, fine. And they suspended, not suspended, they fined like a managing partner of Ross $500,000 because he was involved in the tampering. Okay, so that's where we are with that. Essentially, Dolphins lose the first round pick. That's a big deal. Yeah. But it has nothing to do with Brian Flores, which a lot of people thought that could be a problem. But it turns out in the eyes of the NFL, not. All right. Adam Gold in the studio with my man, Coach Pete DeRuta with the Capital Financial Advisory Group.

We're talking retirement and coach. I'm a simple guy, but I like colors. Tell me how I can color code money and get ready for retirement. I like colors too. I like pictures. I like graphs. I don't like just a bunch of words. And so what we try to do is we try to break down all those words on your statement, all those numbers into three colors.

Red, green, yellow. People are amazed when they come in and most of their money is in the red category. Yeah, I don't want that. It's high horsepower potential. It also means high loss potential. So you have to, it's a give and take. You could be willing to do that or that. Yellow means liquid money. You can get it anytime.

It's not going to earn anything. Green gives you safe growth, but also gives you lifetime income. As we get closer to retirement, we need some green accounts. We need the green zone, we call it. And Baghdad green zone was important. Green zone's important for you too. The next 10 people, Adam, it's a thousand dollar value. Golden ticket. We're going to put together for you, your very own total plan that has a green zone. It's a traffic light.

I hope it's green for you. 800-661-7383 or text Adam to 2-1-0-0-0 for coach Pete DeRuta. Now to yesterday's and today's big story. All I can think of is that it has to suck to be a woman and be a sports fan. I mean, I could have easily removed and be a sports fan and replaced it with in the workplace, but we're a sports show. So let's deal with it in a sports context. We don't need to list off the episodes of sexual harassment or assault or violence towards women that go unpunished just throughout the day to day life.

The National Football League has done a poor job over the last several years of essentially policing itself. All of all of this stuff is seen seems to be baked into society, right? Whether it's Bobby Knights, if rape is inevitable, just lay back and enjoy it to jeans Friday to I'm sorry.

Did my erect penis brush against your hand? Like because that was a thing that happened, although without the apology, I guess you could just expect that you as a woman are just here for men to use for our pleasure and power trips. I think that's a justifiable way to approach basically every day if you wanted to do that.

I can't tell you you're wrong because we're proven that that is the case almost on a daily basis. It's pretty clear that Deshaun Watson deserved more than a six game suspension and he may yet get it. He might even get hit for the whole season based on what the National Football League is interested in doing, which would include the playoffs if the Browns get there.

For now, though, it's just six games. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski can theoretically start planning. I've tried to just be where my feet are and operate with the information that we have available to us. So, you know, this process is not my process, so it's agreed upon by the PA and the NFL and all I can do is respect it. All right. So what is what is Stefanski's reaction overall to this?

Yeah, I would I would go back to what we said when we first acquired Deshaun and that hasn't changed. There's no incredible empathy for anyone who's been impacted by this decision. It's something that I don't take lightly. I've spoken to women in our organization, I've spoken to women in the community, and that's something that I'll continue to do. And our fans, whether you're a man or a woman, our fans are really important to us.

So I want to make sure that they understand that and that they're never going to be dismissed in any way. All right. I mean, I can't dispute anything that Kevin Stefanski said, right? I mean, he's a relatively new coach. Yeah.

And, you know, he's done a pretty good job with the Browns, but I mean, all of that stuff sounds good. All right. So let's move on from that. Still staying with the issue, even though Watson was found to have lied in his testimony to the league, Sue L. Robinson, the independent arbiter here, former district court judge, said so. She didn't believe that Deshaun Watson had told the truth to the league, even though Robinson noted his lack of remorse in the situation. Remember, he has steadfastly said he has done nothing wrong. So what's to apologize for if you've done nothing wrong, even though the owner, Jimmy Haslam, has said, oh, my, he's so remorseful.

No, he's not. And Judge Robinson pointed that out in her 16 page ruling. And even though Robinson found that Watson's, and this is her terminology, nonviolent sexual assault, threatened the safety and well-being of the four women whose cases were brought before her by the league, she still ruled that the NFL's precedent was that six games was appropriate and no fine was attached. I am baffled by having read through this. Baffled at the contradictions that are contained within this.

It is a fantastic story, and I don't mean in a good way. It is just utterly amazing to read through this ruling. But to me, this is essentially an indictment. And it's an indictment on Watson's behavior. But it's also an indictment on how the NFL has been, I think, wickedly inconsistent and lenient towards sexual offenses and violence towards women. So what does the NFL do now? Because she basically said the NFL in the beginning of the statement, in the beginning of the ruling, the NFL is not forward thinking.

They're front facing, but not forward thinking, meaning that they don't plan out very well. They are reactionary and they are moved almost entirely by public opinion, especially in matters like this. So what does the NFL do now? Do they let six games stand or does Roger Goodell file the appeal and Doc Watson, sorry about that for Doc Watson fans, the full year and more because he is capable of doing so, Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk dot com, who's an attorney, weighs in.

The question is, in the next three days, will the NFL exercise its prerogative to appeal to the commissioner? There's no deference. There's no standard that gives her decision any special weight. He can just go in with the evidence as she determined it to be.

The facts she found. And that's why her written ruling is going to be so important. And the commissioner can say, well, you said six, I think 16 or whatever number he chooses. And again, it was the league that was pushing for 17 minimum.

And the league is run by Roger Goodell. Unless it was a ploy to get her to go all the way up to six, right? You ask for a lot and you you are happy with whatever middle ground you get. Unless it was a ploy, if he really wants 17, he has an easy way to get 17. I tell my people to appeal to me and then my appeal decision is 17 games.

That could happen. My read on this is, as I just at the risk of repeating myself, historically, the NFL has done an embarrassing job dealing with sexual assaults and domestic violence. They make up for it in with the stupid stuff like marijuana offenses. They make up for it with that. But in violence towards women, things that have something to do with women, the disrespect of women, including by Dan Snyder, right?

They do a horrible job. And so it's almost like boys will be boys is written in their offices like play like a champion today is in the Notre Dame locker room. It's like a model June 19th, 2006. But it all started May 6, 1997 with the announcement that the Hartford Whalers were coming to North Carolina. It's a story of transition of heartbreak of figuring it out on the fly. The canes corner look at the 25th anniversary of the move presented by the aluminum company of North Carolina.

Listen now, find James 25th anniversary wherever you get your podcast. Tony Busby, the attorney for I think all 24 of the women who filed civil suits against Deshaun Watson on the NFL and their past exact same thing I said 15 months ago, I can say now the NFL has no interest, does not care about the rights of women. They care about the bottom line. They care about making money. They're trying to manage this as a PR crisis. But as far as trying to do anything to assuage these particular women or women's rights or dealing with women's rights in general, that's not part of their mission statement. And they've made that very clear throughout this process. Find the lie.

Find the lie. All right, more from Tony Busby about what might come next. The women that I represent, they were not sitting back waiting for the NFL to do anything groundbreaking.

And of course, nothing like that happened. Now, we'll see what the NFL does going forward. And I think several of the people that I represent will be willing to speak out about the NFL and how the NFL treated them in particular, and how this process has went forward.

So we intend to do that, I think on Thursday. But until then, we'll just wait and see what the NFL does. I don't know what the NFL is going to do.

We'll get to that in a second. Mike DeCorcy of the Sporting News wrote a very interesting column ripping Sue Robinson's ruling. And he's not wrong. The ruling is, once you read the ruling, the ruling is bizarre in how she gets to six games. But my read of this is exactly what it was yesterday. It's really an homage to the NFL's history in these matters, because ruling on these sexual assaults and calling them nonviolent to me is stunning, because the CDC defines any sexual assault as a violent act. So for a judge, a former judge, I guess, because she's a retired judge, for somebody like that to say this is a nonviolent sexual misconduct, I don't get that.

I just don't think you can have both in the same sentence. Now there are different degrees of violent acts to be sure, but still that is so inconsistent for me. And intentionally or not, and I think I get back to this point, intentionally or not, this ruling puts the onus squarely on the commissioner's office. If Roger Goodell is about that life, if he is truly interested in holding Deshaun Watson to account, if he believes that the image of the NFL needs Deshaun Watson to serve a year-long suspension with a hefty fine that comes with it, because let's remember that the Browns structured this contract completely to save Watson money. They knew that he might be suspended for a long time.

Ultimately, they realized that it was going to be relatively mild, but they knew going in that this could be 10, this could be 12 games. So you're not going to have him make, in terms of salary, $45 million a year, because that's 17, or 45 million divided by 17, every game check is gone. So ultimately the six-game suspension is going to cost him about 350 grand. I'm not saying that's not a lot of money, it's a lot of money to me, it's a lot of money to you and everybody out there. But if you have a $230 million guaranteed contract, I mean, I'm not saying you won't miss 350 grand, but it's a lot easier to goodbye. Yeah.

It's a lot, you know, it's just a lot easier to goodbye, you know, one and a half percent or whatever that number is, right? Anyway, so if Roger Goodell is about it, then the opportunity is right there for him. He can appeal, he can hear the appeal, and rule as he sees fit.

And it's in the collective bargaining agreement, which might make it more difficult for it to be challenged in a federal court, because he has this right collectively bargained. Look, I am not necessarily rooting one way or the other. I think since the NFL is all about PR, and I think Tony Busby is 100 percent correct in that, they are going through a PR spin now. The move for the NFL, and this will contradict what I said yesterday, I said the NFL should not appeal, they should just let it go because they got to get through the news cycle, let the news cycle, you know, end and then move on, because we know that everybody will forget this. But if you determine that you need to do something, let's see the fight.

Earn it man, earn, earn the win. We will find out if the National Football League is about it, because it's put up or shut up time for them. We have some other NFL news, there's a lot of stuff that we're probably not going to get to and out of the gate, and that's upsetting to me because there's a lot of cool stuff to talk about. It is Jacob deGrom day, I'm excited for the return of Jacob deGrom, it's been more than a year. Our co-worker Mike is very excited. Very excited, and it's baseball's trade deadline is today, we'll talk to Elliot Johnson in about 10 minutes about that. But we have other NFL news, Panthers quarterback situation, still a long way from sorting itself out but that's fine. The chances are, because how can it not be, Baker Mayfield will get the start when they host the Cleveland Browns, his old team on the first Sunday of the season. And for some reason, I don't know, maybe it's a good question, I don't know. I don't know why Baker Mayfield will be the guy to ask, but he was asked about his thoughts on Deshaun Watson.

That honestly is none of my business. I don't play against the other quarterback, that's the most cliche thing to say, but that's just the truth when it comes down to it. I'm game planning against their defense, and if I'm playing or not, I'm trying to help this team win. That's my mindset going into it, so I got to keep getting better, but I'm not focused about week one right now.

I'm working on each day, each install, and continuing to get better, and we'll handle that when it comes. For now, it's about getting the Panthers better, and our offense continuing to get better as well. Yeah, I'm just not even sure why we were asking Deshaun Watson and Baker Mayfield about. They were never teammates, ever. Baker never showed up.

They were, at the same time, on the roster together, but Baker never showed up in Cleveland while Deshaun Watson was there, so I don't even get it. Anyway, other stuff. Kyler Murray will now have extra time to do that no longer required film study at home, because he got COVID, so he's got to stay away for a little bit. So he gets to play video games. No, no, no. Study. Home study. It's not in the contract, but scout's owner.

Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne will not play Thursday in the Hall of Fame game. What? Not sure why we're watching, then. Betting. Not sure why we're watching. It's football, Adam. That's true. That's why we're going to watch. You know why?

Because we get to hear things like this. Yeah, exactly right. That's why. Lewis Hamilton is signed to be part of the new Denver Broncos ownership group. Oh, that's cool.

Very, absolutely cool. I'm not sure why one of the Walmart heirs, they're the owners. I'm not sure why they need an ownership group, but it's always cool to have some star power attached.

Steven Ross doesn't need investors with the Miami Dolphins, but the Williams sisters are part of ownership group there. Oh, okay. They were it for a time. I did not know that.

There you go. You learn something new. You don't learn something new every day, but just now you did. I learned something new today. Chris Boswell, kicker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, got a new four-year contract, $5 million per $12.5 million guaranteed.

I'm very curious when I see stories like this. Why is anybody paying a lot of money for a kicker? Why not? Boswell's good.

He's very good. I'm not even trying to knock Boswell, but unless you're Justin Tucker, I just don't understand. Pay him a lot this year and maybe they extended it out to lower the cap hit on a kicker.

They probably did. It's $12.5 million guaranteed. The four years is probably a farce. It's probably a two-year deal, right? It's four years on top of the final year of his current deal, so he's under contract for the next five. Yeah.

I'll say again, I think the last two years are probably dummy years, so just to minimize the cap hit. But our guy is signed. That's right. Yes. Look at this. There's been Steelers news.

I read this yesterday, Dennis. You're a Steelers fan. Yeah, I am. We're focusing on Mitch Trubisky versus Kenny Pickett. Look out for Mason Rudolph. No. Mason Rudolph.

I'm not looking. Matt Cannon has said it. Yep. Hey. While everybody's watching Kenny and Mitch, ACC legends both, Mason Rudolph coming up on the outside. The veteran.

Okay. You can't call a guy on his rookie contract still a veteran. Didn't he swing his helmet? Did he swing his helmet? No. Miles Garrett swung his helmet at Mason Rudolph. Yeah. Because Mason Rudolph was alleged, and I don't think it was ever proven to have said something disrespectful.

I have no idea. I wouldn't be surprised if he did, but yeah, so Mason Rudolph, man. Enjoy the Mason Rudolph era, Dennis. Yeah. We had it two years ago when Big Ben was hurt. Oh, yeah. No, that was the Duck Hodges era. It was a split. It was the Duck Hodges era. Yeah. I'm so looking forward to that.

People that actually think that is like, okay, get out of here. This is the Adam Gold Show. Off with the crossbar, and the Hurricanes have won the Stanley Cup. June 19th, 2006, but it all started May 6th, 1997 with the announcement that the Hartford Whalers were coming to North Carolina. It's a story of transition, of heartbreak, of figuring it out on the fly.
