Fort Worth, Texas. For millions, Brian Keith was the comforting, familiar face of classic American television. Effortlessly conveying a gruff exterior while hiding a massive heart. Here to tell another Hollywood Goes to War story is Roger McGrath. McGrath is the author of Gunfighters, Highwaymen, and Vigilantes, the U.S.
Marine and former history professor at UCLA. Take it away, McGrath. A star of film and television, Brian Keith appeared in nearly 70 movies and more than 300 television episodes of various series. His first appearance was as a three-year-old in 1924. A silent movie Hyde Piper Malone.
His last appearance was as President William McKinley. in the 1997 movie Rough Riders. He played mostly heroes, but occasionally villains. He portrayed cowboys, sailors, cops, detectives, mountain men, outlaws, soldiers. and U.S.
presidents. He was in a dozen war movies. In real life, He was a Marine in the Pacific in World War II. Brian Keith is born in 1921. Dactors Robert Keith and Helena Shipman.
of Irish and Scottish descent. Keith is reared as a Catholic. And he spends some of his childhood on the road with his parents, who appear in plays on stage and in movies. and when not on the road with his parents, He's with a grandmother on Long Island. Nonetheless, his childhood is relatively normal.
and he participates in all the typical boyhood activities and adventures. He loves reading. especially about the exploits of the Marines in China during the Boxer Rebellion. and at Bella Wood in World War One. Marine legend Dan Daly.
who was awarded the Medal of Honor twice. is Keith's hero. After graduating from high school in 1939 in East Rockaway, New York, He begins acting on stage and on radio programs. In 1940, he has a brief appearance as a note-named student. In the movie, Knut Rockney, All-American.
starring Pat Lo Brand and Ronald Reagan. Although set on a career path of acting, during the summer of 1941. Keith joins the Marine Corps Reserve. He remains a Marine on paper only. Until the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.
Within a month. He's in boot camp at Paris Island, South Carolina. He excels in training, especially in marksmanship, qualifying expert for both the rifle and pistol. After serving as a marksmanship instructor himself, Keith is sent to San Diego by train. and then to Hawaii by ship.
Keith trains as a rear gunner. on the Douglas Dauntless Sky Bomber. Until 1944, The Dauntless is our only carrier-capable dive bomber. It's the dive bomber flown so effectively at the Battle of Midway. by Wade McCluskey, Earl Gallagher.
Dick Best and others. sending four Japanese carriers to the bottom and winning a monumental victory. The Dawnless has a two-man crew. Pilot in front? and gunner in rear.
The gunner fires twin-mounted Browning .30 caliber machine guns. He also assists with radio communications, navigation, and spotting. Throughout World War II, the Dotless is both carrier and land-based. and flown by both Navy and Marine pilots. Keith trains in the Dotless.
Both at Marine Corps Air Station Iwa. immediately to the west of Pearl Harbor. and at Midway. He soon finds himself with Marine Dive Bombing Squadron. VMSB two hundred forty four in the Solomon Islands.
First stationed at Moonda. on New Georgia Island. While at Munda, the squadron creates its insignia. A round patch with a skull in the middle. holding a bomb in its teeth.
with a surrounding ring of letters spelling Bombing Banshees. Since the Banshee has been part of Irish folklore for more than a thousand years, This name suits Keith just fine. VMSB two forty four. participates in the invasion of Bougainville Island. during November 1943.
Bougainville sits at the northern end of the Solomon Chain. and is the largest of the many islands that comprise the Solomons. Not long after the initial marine landings on Bougainville, Navy construction battalions, The Seabees. begin building an airfield at Cape Torakina. Even before the Dorokina airfield is completed, Marine fighter and die bomber pilots are flying off of it.
Their new target is the great Japanese base at Rabal on New Britain Island. about 225 miles to the northwest. Gauntless spinner Brian Keith. describes the missions to Rabal as flying through The Valley of Death. Says Keith.
The pilot doesn't merely drop his bombs while flying leisurely over targets. He dives. These dives are vertical, and sometimes our angle of dive is steeper than 90 degrees. We start at 10,000 to 15,000 feet. and level out near the ground.
Keith says all the while Japanese zeros are trying to blow the die bombers out of the sky, and he is busy firing at them. At the same time, says Keith, The enemy on the ground is firing up at us. What a ride. And you've been listening to Roger McGrath tell the story of Brian Keith. What a career, starting at the age of three in 1924 and appearing in 1997 in Rough Riders.
Talk about a long run. A boy, Pearl Harbor, changed his life, a young, aspiring actor. And we continue with our American Stories and the story of Brian Keith, part of our Hollywood Goes to War storytelling. with Roger McGrath. Let's pick up where we last left off. Geese says he and his pilot were lucky on their many missions. Our airplane took a lot of hits, including a three-foot-long hole in the wing.
One time my earphones were shot off. Many of my buddies weren't so lucky. Keith thinks his luck has run out. Two zeros are on his tail and closing in for the guild. He fires at them until his twin machine guns overheat and jam.
Heath desperately begins firing flares at the approaching fighters. Help arrived just in time. said Keith. when a Navy pilot shot down one of them. The dive bombers are supported by fighters flying cover at different altitudes.
Regularly supporting Keith's die bombing squadron, Is Marine Fighter Squadron VMF 214, none other than Peppy Boyington's Black Sheep? flying their corsairs. Keith is in action, whether flying to her ball or sitting on the ground at the Torakina Airfield on Bougainville.
The Marines have established a perimeter around the strip. But there are still thousands of Japanese in the Bougainville jungles. He said We got peppered with mortars and machine gun fire. The Jack Mortimer got to be quite proficient at dropping them in the right place. Keith said this took a toll, not only on planes, but also on marines.
A sixteen-year-old mechanic, said Keith. Once spent 24 hours working on a plane. No sooner had he finished the job than a mortar landed squarely on it, blowing it to smithereens.
Now will I add? who had until then been admiring his work from a distance. became so infuriated. Then he grabbed a brown automatic rifle, an E2 old shovel, and a bag of grenades. And single-handedly stomped off into the jungle in pursuit of the Jets who had destroyed his work.
He found them in a pillbox. where he jumped in and collabored them with his e-tool. Keith described another assault on the airfield. while he is trained to relax upon the return from a mission to Rabal. Once when I was playing cards with my buddies in our tent, I stepped outside to get a breath of air.
I saw some Japs approaching and ran back inside the tent to warn the others. Nah, you're seeing things, they said. The Japs couldn't possibly have the infiltrated this far inside the wire. Just then, said Keith, A row of neatly spaced bullet holes appeared through the tent. I was the first one into the fighting hole, with the others diving in on top of me.
The Jebs were fanatical. I've seen them charge at us, outgunned and wearing only baseball caps, across wide open fields of our perimeter. The attacks on Rabal during November and December of 1943. and during the early months of 1944. take a heavy toll on U.S.
fighters and bombers. not only from intense ground fire, but also from engagement with Japanese Zeros. Bappy Boynton himself is shot down by zeros on January 3, 1944. He survives ditching. but is picked up by a Japanese submarine and dropped off at Rabaul.
He spends the remainder of the war as a POW. most of the time at a camp outside of Tokyo. Keith and his fellow Marines No only That the leading Marine Ace and Skipper of the Black Sheep Squadron is missing in action. By the summer of 1944, Rabal's fighter cover has been mostly destroyed.
