Kingdom Pursuits, where you hear from ordinary people instilled with an extraordinary passion. Together we explore the stories of men and women who take what they love and let God turn their passion into kingdom pursuits.
Now, live from the Truth Booth, your host, Robbie Dilmore.
Well, good morning. We need to make a Very clear disclosure. I am not Robbie Dilmore. I am Dwayne Carson. I have a ministry called Date the Word.
It is my joy to fill in for Robbie Dillmore today. And this brings back very pleasant memories for me with Kingdom Pursuit because it was Robbie Dillmore who interviewed me four years ago. In regards to date the word, and he wanted people to know about my passion for people getting to know the word of God. And so we. Took from this program, Kingdom Pursuits, and started pursuing doing something for the Lord where we now have a verse for every date.
And we have a website. We have an app. Today is October the 18th. It is 10, 18, and we have two verses that we look to on 10, 18, John 10, 18, where Jesus says, I lay down my life. I willingly give it.
I don't have someone taking it from me. I give my life willingly for it. Yeah. You And also, I have the power to take it back up. The Father has given me that power.
John 10, 18, but also from Ecclesiastes 10, 18, this is a challenging verse. It says, because of laziness, the building decays, and through idleness of hands, the house leaks. And it gives us a reminder that we should be responsible with our responsibilities. That's what a diligent person does. Proverbs 12, 27 says that diligence is a man's precious possession.
The lazy, though, there's nothing good ever said in the Bible about a lazy person. And here in Ecclesiastes 10, 18, buildings decay, house leaks because someone isn't being responsible with their responsibilities.
So that's a quick introduction of me reminding you about date the word. You can get more information on it by going to the website www.date the word.com. We have an app. You can download that app. You can see any verse for any date on that app.
We also have a devotional verse for today's date, what I just talked about from Proverbs 10:18. You can click on that and read the full devotion. Maybe during this show today, you would like to know what is my verse for my birthday? Um, I love giving people their birthday verses. I'll ask people, when is your birthday?
866-348-7884. And Call in, we'll tell you your verse. I hope you'll check out the date the word ministry. It is one of our. Pursuits for the Kingdom.
And today on Kingdom Pursuit, we have with us Dave Locke. Dave Locke. He lives up above Toronto in Canada, and he has a phenomenal ministry, Freedom Global Outreach. Dave, welcome to Kingdom Pursuits today. Dave, have you there?
I'm here. I'm speaking, Duane. Can you hear me? I hear you.
Well, welcome. Welcome to Kingdom Pursuit, and you and I have had a friendship for numerous years now. Um I think maybe 25 or so years, your son came to Liver University, and we learned about a ministry called Freedom Global Outreach. And I would love for you to tell our listeners today about this great ministry. Yeah, thanks for allowing me to do this.
And yeah, we've known each other many years. I actually, all three of my kids. Came down to Virginia to Liberty University. It was a fantastic experience. I met many.
Many wonderful, godly people, such as yourself, and many have been friends since that day. Yeah, so thanks for asking. Freedom Global Outreach. Is a ministry to orphaned and abandoned children in Haiti.
So the Lord laid on my heart years ago Obviously, you know my kids were at Liberty, I mentioned a couple decades ago, so I'm aging myself.
So when I was about 24 years old and newly married, I was at a missions conference, a week-long missions conference at the People's Church in Toronto. And at the end of the week The Lord just laid on my heart that I I needed to do something in missions. And I didn't sense it was like pack up and leave for Papua New Guinea full time. It just was something different.
So I put my hand up and said, yeah, I feel I'm being led into missions. And it it wasn't long after, a few weeks after, One of the Times I heard the Lord's voice, he had clearly said to me, Open an orphanage. And I was again twenty four newly married Uh, in a blue-collar job at the time, my wife was in a office worker in downtown Toronto at the time. We had a home and a mortgage and I knew I didn't have ability then, so I just promised the Lord: yes, I'm going to do that. When I can, I will.
And it was many years later the Lord's patient many years later So We went searching through a missionary I knew and the search led us to Haiti in 2002. where we met a pastor that also had opened Eight churches in Haiti and eight Christian schools, and the Lord laid on his heart now it's time to open an orphanage.
So the Lord brought us together in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. in two thousand two and November twenty four, november two thousand four, so twenty one years ago next month. we opened our first of three homes in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
So that's kind of our history in a nutshell. And over those twenty one years, Yeah. Any idea of how many orphans have been impacted by your ministry? Oh, we've had about eighty Um Over that time, By now, they would all be cycled out if all things were normal at twenty-one years. But as everyone knows, Haiti has been First they had COVID like everyone else, but then the the gangs took over.
So It's a whole different scenario. You can't just open the door and and have kids graduate and send them out into a The dangerous society it is.
So we're working on auxiliary plans to Help them get education. Help them get post-secondary education so they have a chance at life. which very few orphanages do is because they can't, but the gods I'm just trusting God that we will have The donors and the ability to provide post-secondary education, and then help them with a transition plan to find a safe. a place to live given the conditions there.
So As the older ones cycle out, our plan we have room in the three homes. Our plan is to start bringing in the younger ones again from From ch infants uh usually they come in two, three, four years old. what will happen is in a In a mountain village somewhere, a child's parents will die. And a pastor in the mountain has no ability to care for them. They hear about our orphanages.
They know the pastors that oversee our homes. and they'll bring the child to us.
So as uh older uh kids cycle out, we were planning to to bring in uh young ones. as well. And our ministry also expands Pass that. Where we've opened a pediatric medical clinic where we see 2,600. Children per year for free.
So we're impacting a lot of lives in Haiti. for God's glory. Uh Dave, we've got to go to a break and if you can hang on, I want you to be able to tell our folks. You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com. Welcome back to Kingdom Pursuits.
I'm filling in today for Robbie Dillmore. My name is Dwayne Carson. Ministry is Date the Word. Please check it out. Website, www.date the word.com, as well as an app.
Download it today to see verses for today and any verse you need to give to anyone regarding a birthday. We have on our show today Dave Locke. He's with Freedom Global Outreach. And Dave, you were telling us about how you got this burden, and then years later, God kept it. Burning on your heart.
You started orphanages in Haiti, and I just want you to tell our listeners how could they help you learn more about Freedom Global Outreach? What's the website they should go to? And how can they become a participant in helping you reach orphans in Haiti? Yeah, great. Thanks for asking.
It's a task where it takes many hands. Haiti's a tough place to work in and they've confluent inflation through inflation greater than the US So it's tough very tough there to live on the budgets we have.
So our website is freedomglobaloutreach. com. Um right now we are Looking for funding to help our older kids go to post-secondary school. We've had some great successes, we've had some go to school. We've had some graduate from accounting, another one.
Hotel and tourism, and they ones graduated and moved on and been married. A couple have moved to the Dominican Republic for safety and better job opportunities. one great success is we have one girl who's in her second last year. She'll be a doctor in two years from now. uh in Haiti.
And hers is a great story. of the f We have five sisters. from a Christian family that told me their parents Their parents were successful. Business people in Haiti, and they told me our parents went to work the day of the earthquake and never came home. Uh the girls went to a an aunt in the mountain who treated them poorly and they were getting scabbies and skin sores and And then they got into our home and they said, We feel like we got our life back.
Uh really Proud of this one girl. It's tough to get through medical school in Haiti. And the sheets.
now her last two years in the hospitals practicing. I get pictures all the time of her in her in her gown Uh here helping with people. Uh so So the the dream all the girls have dreams. Uh even some want to do uh sewing. And uh cosmetic.
Uh just things they can do when they leave to earn a living.
So we could really use help With education, people can give in too. through the website. Uh freedom or uh res dot com forward slash donate. They can donate online. Or our checks can be mailed to our PO box.
PO box. Schippensburg PA. Mm-hmm. That's the two ways they can give. Dave, you have not-for-profit in the U.S.
You have a phenomenal ministry, and for our listeners, again, you may get a burden early on in life, and yet at that time, it's not ready. You're not ready to do that, but God's put that burden on your heart. Don't let it burn out. Dave is a great example. Years later, he fulfilled what God had called him to do, and it's a tremendous ministry.
Dave, thanks for calling in today. Oh, appreciate it. Nice talking to you all. Yes, sir. Check out FreedomGlobalOutreach.com.
We also have today Steve Cooper. Uh How? Weinstein, I'm hoping I'm saying that right, Paul. And John Valley. Gentlemen, welcome to Truth Talk Live today.
That means a kingdom pursuit. My producers are going, I knew you were going to do that because I do Truth Talk Live so often. This is Kingdom Pursuits, and I hear the voice of Paul. John Bellaly is on the line as well. Welcome, John.
You guys have a most unique ministry, a most unique story. I'm going to set it up and then turn it over to you. I I was introduced to these guys a few weeks ago. You may or may not know as a listener, I had a battle with cancer. And as a pastor, I also have worked with numerous people who've had battles with cancer.
A number of friends right now are struggling with it. And I was introduced to these guys. Their unique story is they're connected to a man by the name of John Wooden.
Now, that name doesn't resonate as well today because of the changes through the years. But many years ago, John Wooden was the man. He was the basketball coach, men's basketball coach for UCLA, and they won 10 national championships, had a winning streak of 88 games. It was incredible. He was the wizard of Uh What was the word that was used for him?
He was the wizard. Wizard of Westwood. That's it. Wizard of Westwood. And John played for John Wooden.
So, John, tell us about. Your ministry. And then, Paul, I want you to tell us about the book that has come out about John. First lettings Dwayne. about the w the Wizard of Westwood.
I did a speaking engagement with Coach John Wooden Years ago, and we went back to his condominium, you have to go through a gate to get into where the condos are. And So I'm driving coaches. in the shotgun seat. And I I said didn't get the key to won't get through in through the gate. And I said, Come on, coach, aren't you the wizard of Westwood?
He looked at me and said, Don't whoever may call call me that. You wanna be the wizard bus boy? He you don't like that. Amazing. Uh Paul Uh You've helped John.
Uh with the book called The Pyramid Principle. A battle-tested Hall of Famer discovers UCLA coaches John Wooden's true meaning of success. I want our listeners to know about this pyramid principle and how they need to get this book so they can be impacted as they deal with life's challenges, especially cancer. Thanks, Dwayne. It's available on every major site, Amazon, Barnes and Noble's.
And I'm just excited to be part of John Vallely's story because I, like you, was a fan of Coach Wooden. Yeah. I had looked for a story that would Represent Coach Wooden at the highest level. And when I heard John Valley's story, I knew immediately he was the man It really represents coach Not only the principles of the pyramid, but in faith. and character and mission.
And so I Um I met John and we started to discuss a project that Is on its way to a documentary and a feature film as well. And It's For me, Dwayne. That pyramid At the top of the pyramid is faith through prayer. And JV is the guy that really understands the power of that faith. And the prayer which helped He and his daughter.
Battle in this life. And so I'm going to let him talk about the lesson. He learned from coach and then I'm I'm just gonna get out of his way 'cause it's so powerful, but it it's It's something we'd love everybody to buy the book and support the film. And at the end, I'll give you a link.
Okay.
Well, JB, go ahead. The pyramid principle. is probably the I I'm pretty sure it's the only book It talks about One of Coach Wooden's players Life experiences. Many of them will rest. the dribb uh the uh pyramid of s Success And they can quote that, but then how Does how do you use that in your life?
Yeah. Oh shit. taught us these great principles of this pyramid, fifteen characteristics that make us up these human beings, And he never talked about winning or losing. He always wanted us to find the piece we get in our Solves. when we know we've done our best to become the best we're capable of becoming.
And he knew that nobody else would ever know if the individual had achieved that, but he wanted us. to try for that. I first got involved with the Pyramid of Success in my second year at UCLA in a big way because I was captain of the team. there were some issues on the team that needed to be taken care of. And it was always such a great honored to be able to just check into the pyramid of success and see where Team Super.
Loyalty. to those that depend on you, cooperation Enthusiasm. Um Mm-hmm. developing the skills of communication. I learned so much.
more than basketball. during that season. My first year was great because I learned all the fundamentals and so forth. And by the way, When we started the year, we had a group meeting and Coach Wooden would address us. And he'd walk into the room.
Yeah. Yeah, they're cool. It said, gentlemen, take your shoes and socks off. I want to uh Light up. And so The guys that had been there a couple of years knew exactly what he was talking about.
But I'll never forget. Kareem, who was Kareem Abdul Jabbar, is sitting next to me. He's probably one of the greatest, if not the greatest. Flavor in basketball college co college basketball She says, come on, Coach, let's stop the sockstone again. And Coach was gonna tell us how to You're listening to the Truth Network and TruthNetwork.com.
Welcome back to Kingdom Pursuits. I'm Dwayne Carson, Philadelphia, Bobby Gilmore today. And we have on the line John and Paul. John Valley played for the legendary coach John Wooden at UCLA. They won national championship after national championship after national championship.
John Wooden set a standard for how to play basketball, but more than that, he set a standard for how to live life, had a pyramid of success. And as a pastor at Liberty University doing discipleship, teaching, leadership, I had the 17, I had the 15 principles on the wall so that students could see how to conduct themselves. How to carry out leadership principles. And John, you were telling us that one of those principles on the preparation component was he taught you how to take off your socks, and we had to go to a break. After telling you to take off your socks, what did he do?
Well, let me just take you into the adult relationship between Coach Hood and myself. And I said to him as. Later on, af having graduated, moved on through pro basketball, the whole thing. I say coach You really didn't want us to just understand the socks and shoes story. You wanted us to understand it in a big way.
Make a difference in our lives. And I said, Coach, that that telling that sock story every year. was just amazing and I was should share it to you. The fool Javar. who was sitting next to me.
I said, come on, coach, not the fact story. And so as I said You weren't trying to show us how to put on a So I'm sure we're trying to teach us about the fundamentals. You have to have a foundation in which to live your life. Because, no, John, I wanted you to know how to put on your socks. and shoes properly.
But I hadn't like See that? I'm a sleep tennis. Yep, yep. stuff. And uh I just You know, the pyramid of success was such a great program.
When you talk about faith, I think about the pyramid of success and how It's a system of self-evaluation. We all as human beings. human beings must be willing to look in the mirror. or look inside ourselves. And later on in life, it was probably in my 20s.
28th or 9th year. That's what I realized there was something missing. And I had a wonderful wife. I had two children. I had some business I was involved with.
and yet something was missing. And it was at that time after a year of study that I asked Jesus into my life. And I then said to uh in a prayer to God. How might you use me and my family for your benefit. And that's when the story gets a little rocky of this book.
Because You don't know what your future is going to bring. But the pyramid of principle can help you get through anything. And From that prayer we walked into a life where My nine-year-old daughter was diagnosed With A terrible disease. called rhabdosarcoma. And there was very few if any.
really no answers at that point. This was in uh or approximately Uh eighty eight, nineteen eighty eight. And So we had to fight with this little girl against cancer for about Oh, not quite three years. And We found At the end of the line. that the doctor said there is no answer at this point.
And so one night she passed away, and her mother said. My arms, and then you go to God and you say, God, what in the world? This isn't what I was thinking. But uh How might you use me and my family for your benefit? Is this one way?
And So as As a result of Have we lost that little twelve-year-old? We've raised millions of dollars for children's cancer And so she has a legacy. Erin, my daughter, has a legacy. That is very long. The spirit is always in my heart.
that she had and Everybody can benefit. from learning how to get through A series of problems like cancer. That wasn't the only thing. needed to learn uh about how to deal with Uh my my marriage I had to learn to deal with my raising of children which I really believed in the pyramid principle. to use those pyramid of success characteristics that make us up as human beings.
and try to teach it to the kids. whether it was soccer, basketball. or baseball. By the way, I required that the parents would be at a meeting. That This was all explained in detail.
And then I would use the different blocks of the pyramid to try to motivate the kids to become better at the game they're playing. and to better understanding that inner peace It comes from knowing you've done your best. to become the best you're capable of becoming.
So it's nice to know for me that God is part of that base. And the creator of John Wooden and therefore, the creator of the Pyramid of Success His hand has been in all of this. And uh I'm very grateful. Amen. Dwayne, let me add that as ribble for victory over cancer.
which is now at North Carolina and Duke as well. Um I it was just Sunday, and I saw John Valerie stand in that same court Where he he stood below the banners. and won championships and now he's competing for the lives of children. and another basketball player's daughter. Mitchell Butler played in the nineties.
And his daughter, Tay Butler, was diagnosed At age nine. and survived. and went to UCLA's medical school. and has returned as a doctor. and it's helping battle.
that same cancer because of the research and the legacy that John and Aaron created.
So it's as John said, how would he use me if he's Use John's family powerfully and um Yeah. Trule. Our show is called Kingdom Pursuits. And uh And for our listeners, I hear this story a couple weeks ago. about John Valley.
Um Um Weinstein, I hope I'm saying that right. Weisenstein, Weisenstein, Weisenstein. Um And I start hearing about two things here that I want to make sure our listeners are understanding. I hear about a book called The Pyramid Principle, and it's based on John Wooden's Pyramid of Success. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, you want to Google John Wooden's Pyramid of Success.
It's absolutely incredible. I have the book right beside me. I've had it for years called Wooden. And John Wooden was more than a basketball coach, he was a teacher. And he wanted to teach life skills more than basketball skills.
Well, John Valley is one of his players, won championships, but his daughter Erin is going to get cancer and is going to die. And because of that, John has won it. I mean, what a great statement, Lord. How can you use me and my family after he comes to know the Lord?
Well, The way God has decided to use him is with his daughter Aaron battling cancer. Then dying, going to heaven. She was a believer, but they've created a foundation. It's called Dribble for Victory Over Cancer. And for our listeners, I want you to know there are people out there that are working hard to create ways to raise money for research because that's the key.
We've got to have the research to find cures for various cancers. And so, John, tell us a little bit more about why you started Dribble for Victory Over Cancer.
Well I found out about it from a person at USC, one of our neighbor schools actually. Rivals I thought Excuse me? Rivals, I would I would say. Oh, big time rivals. Yeah.
And So John, we're going to go to a break. And when we come back, we're going to hear. Oh how This ministry was started and how we can participate in it. You're listening to the Truth Network. TruthNetwork.com.
Welcome back to Kingdom Pursuits. I'm Dwayne Carson, Philadelphia, Robbie Dillmore today and For a kingdom pursuit, we have John Valley, V-A-L-L-E-L-Y, who played for the legendary coach John Wooden at UCLA, the UCLA Bruins. They won many back-to-back-to-back championships, had a tremendous winning streak of 88 games, set a standard for NCAA basketball. He has a passion. For Raising money To help find a cure for cancer because his little girl Erin, nine years of age, is diagnosed with this horrible disease.
She will die at 12. And John and Paul. Tell us more now how we can be involved in dribble for victory over cancer. Dribble from Victory over Cancer is a program that I brought to UCLA. It was accepted on the campus.
It's a It's a wonderful recreational program that involves fundraising. Children will for different ages Sign up. go into their community to raise money or to develop a team it comes to the event. At UCLA. We we do The event at Drake Stadium.
And the kids come to this Uh legendary place. to dribble the ball around the campus. and to come back in the Pauley Pavilion and meet with the girls basketball team. the men's basketball team And uh We then give out awards for their production.
So We've had as many as 600 children in this event. This year, we had close to four hundred We're looking forward to uh building it up again. And it is active. And Uh University of North Carolina. It's an event that could be on thirty campuses like nothing, it just could happen that way.
But it's a fun time for the kids to go Learn about Philanthropy. and raise money for children's cancer research And uh It's just a wonderful event. I think it's something that's. We're in our eighteenth year right now. Heading for 19 next year, and we're very proud of what's happened.
We've raised A couple of million dollars.
So what? What's the best way for me to learn how to get a team started.
Well Dribble for Victory Over Cancer is an event It's sponsored by the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.
Okay.
Yeah. was started in approximately 1980. Yeah. And My wife and I became involved just a couple of years after it got started, And pediatric cancer research is the place you could go to to see the difference. It's the place to go, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.
It's a 501 through C. And uh I think that that they will If they go then to for a victory over cancer, they'll see how it's all presented. on that website. Paul, tell us about the book and about a documentary. We only have a few minutes left.
Tell us what's coming. Thanks, Dwayne. We're shooting currently We're doing a A big budget documentary. that will raise awareness. around the country and build this program and I think you and I talked about the the film Brian Song, which moved me deeply to go to Wake Forest and play football.
virtually eradicate that cancer. And we believe that this film and documentary will do the same for Rhabdomya sarcoma. We're uh We're still raising funding. We're shooting as we go. We have another foundation called Concern, and it's concernfoundation.org backslash.
Yeah. dash pyramid dash principle. And Your listeners can donate to the documentary. It's 100% donation based. and a portion of that will go to research as well.
And so It's we're railing A number of foundations to really finish what John and Aaron started. And We have a guy on the call. I know we're running out of time, but Stephen Cooper, who's dribbled across the USA here. And he's just On his own dime, he is raising awareness and he's trying to bring it to other campuses and.
So we'd Love to come back and talk to you again. But Coop, do you have anything to say? Yeah, I'd love to hear from Coop. Yes, I my mother got cancer and passed away in fifteen, and I teamed up with the V Foundation and started in California and dribbled to the New York City Marathon, raising money for the V Foundation. And then I was continuing to pray like John, how can you use me?
And our Heavenly Father leads me to California and says, research this guy named John Valley. He's already started.
So that's how I got to where I'm at.
So, to our listeners, research John Valley, learn about his story, his passion, and less dribble for victory over cancer. Check out the book, The Pyramid Principle. And we want to thank you for listening today. This has been Kingdom Pursuits. Hosting for Robbie Dillmore, Dwayne Carson, have a blessed weekend.
Thanks, Dwayne. guys
