It is! The JR Sportbreeze Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Much love and many thanks to everybody tuned in all over North America. Happy Monday! Hope you had a great weekend. I hope you watched all of the basketball. I hope you passed out after watching all of the basketball. I hope you just had a tremendous time.
I'll be hanging out with you for the next four hours. This is when the show gets started every weekday at 6 p.m Eastern, 3 Pacific. I'm in Atlanta. Thank you to our super producer and host.
He's in New York City. His name is Ryan Hickey and we got a lot to get into because if you haven't noticed, in a matter of days we've gone from 68 teams to 64 teams to 32 teams and now after less than a week of basketball, we got the Sweet 16. We are down to the Sweet 16. We got to wait a couple more days to see what happens on the men's side of the bracket but we got a lot to get into. Calipari beats Patino. We got Coach Hurley in Connecticut losing his damn mind. What else is new? I'm glad that he lost.
Get him the hell up on out of here. We got a lot of coaches who just they lost and now they're gone. We got a coach who got fired and then the guy who beat him is taking his job. We got players. We got more than 200 players in the transfer portal.
Why the hell is the portal open during the season? People are worried about there being no more Cinderella's. Puka Nakua, not a Cinderella but he may retire early before the clock strikes midnight. Puka's like, listen, I'm not playing when I'm an old man.
Like I'm not doing that. The guy who just left the team? Cooper? Yeah, I'm not not trying to play as long as uh as he is. Anyway, we got a lot to get into.
If you want to be a part of the show you can. 888-710-4ISN. That's 888-710-4ISN. You know I had mentioned Rick Patino losing to John Calipari. Arkansas beating St. John's on Saturday afternoon. We're going to have Connor Goodson joining us from Hogsport.com to talk about this rebirth of John Calipari. I mean this man you thought he was cooked up in Kentucky and now this dude is looking at another sweet 16 on a team that he just got there to coach. So Connor Goodson is going to join us in a few hours and then next hour Michael Atulip is going to join us. He covers all things college basketball for the field of 68. I want to get his thoughts on what we might see going forward. So we got a lot to do. I gave you the phone number. Here it is again. It's a brand new number 888-710-4ISN.
That's 888-710-4ISN. Me you can find me online. I exist on X or Twitter or whatever the heck you want to call it. I'm everywhere at JR Sport Brief. Not a difficult person to find.
Not a tough person to find. Hickey how you doing man? Welcome back. I'm doing well JR. It's good to be back. I missed you the last few days. Well the feeling is mutual man. Did you watch basketball?
You have a good weekend? Yeah down in sunny Florida. So actually my skin is feeling I am burned to a crisp. You're burned? Say 85 that sun is strong. Oh damn.
Coming from New York to summer in Florida essentially. You got a tan or something? Yes but paid the price for it in terms of the first few days. Went from burn now thankfully is a tan but yeah my forehead hurts.
I think my forearm the skin is probably burned to a crisp actually but beautiful. Small sacrifice you know make to have a good weekend. Watch a ton of basketball. Okay good. Which is a lot of fun. Won a few bucks on some basketball so so far the March Madness bracket and predictions are looking good but long way to go. That's good. It was a great weekend. Great weekend.
That's great man. Now I know this was a late game. Did you see any of this this Maryland game last night with Derek Queen with that shot off the glass?
Oh yeah. What a best ending we've had so far in the first four days. That's the only buzzer beater that we've gotten at all over these past few days. So Maryland is back here in the Sweet 16. They haven't seen the Sweet 16 since 2016. We had that crazy shot by Derek Queen to knock off Colorado State. They smoked Grand Canyon last week 81 to 49 so a little bit different of a game.
They beat the living hell out of them last week and now they beat Colorado State at the buzzer and looking at that Derek Queen shot and looking at everything that took place over the weekend. I feel that this morning and throughout the course of the day and even throughout last night there was more attention on what didn't happen at the end of that game and I'm just like are you kidding me? Like are we really really doing this right now? Derek Queen gets the ball dribbles to his left one two three up shot off the glass falling out of bounds high off the side of the glass two goes in and people are like where's the travel? And I'm like are you got you kidding me right? Where's the travel? People are saying oh they should have called the travel and the game should have been over.
I'm like are you kidding me? Is this really what we're doing last night? I mean I said this last week when I sit down and watch March Madness when I sit down and watch the tournament I'm looking for the next big thing. I want to find the next stars that's what I'm looking for.
You know all these coaches are moving around and players are bouncing around in the transfer portal and we'll get more into that in a bit. I want to see the stars. I'm happy that that Cooper flag is out there okay? I'm glad that people are finding out about Derek Queen out of Maryland. I'm glad that last night when he had a microphone in his face and this is probably the first time people ever heard from this dude he showed everybody how much personality he has instead of just diving in on who this dude is.
People are worried about the travel. I want you to tune in this is after the game it was hilarious this is they put this on a t-shirt already Derek Queen was asked where did you get the confidence from to shoot that shot he had a simple answer. I mean uh so I think I'm from Baltimore that's why and then I kind of had it going okay man my teammates had going and like I said like they trusted me to take that last shot. Oh we love it man they love it we love that shot was amazing oh you didn't hear the shot here listen again you might have saw it on television if you didn't here it is this is Westwood One NCAA radio network. Gillespie looking to throw it in gets it up top to queen dribbling left big step down the lane runner for the win and Maryland has won Maryland is going to the sweet 16 Derek Queen with a runner left in the lane banked it in and for the first time since 2016 the Maryland Terrapins are going to the sweet 16. Man you gotta love that you absolutely got yeah well where you get the confidence from I'm from Baltimore yeah say no more I'm not one to argue about any of that say no more here said coach Kevin Woolard he was asked after the game on CBS how did you even decide who was going to take the shot listen to this I asked everybody I said who wants the ball and he said give me the MF ball and I said all right you're getting it and I said don't mess around go after it and do it and I give him a lot of credit man the big dog came up and threw him yeah you gotta love this I love it we got Maryland and Florida up next thank you Florida for beating up Yukon or not beating them up but beating them we saw how coach Dan Hurley felt about the loss at the end of the game but we'll get into that later on but people are falling in love with with Derek Queen when they're not worried about the stupid dribble was it like I wanted to hear more of this like after the game he showed even more personality and welcome to the new NIL era of college basketball you gotta forget paying somebody under the table you gotta pay him up front now if you want them to play for your program this is pretty hilarious Derek Queen he was asked why why do you listen to head coach Kevin Willard like he can be a little bit of a pain in the behind why do you listen to this guy why do you love him so much he do pay us the money and then so we got so we got to listen to him and we all trust him because he's like a player coach and then and then he went nothing but the best for us and he just um he coaches hard he talked to us other than basketball he's just always there and just want us to win oh wow okay all right good it's all about the hickey remember saying if somebody ever said that the whole program would have been wiped to hell for like six years 10 years we can ask smu football if we would have heard that from a player five years ago the program would cease to exist it would have been the biggest story in sports for the next month maybe the next few months so you mean to tell me the coach paid you yeah yeah I'm here because of the money why do I listen to this guy because he's my boss I love it he's not my coach that guy is my boss and so I listen to the man what a world that we've stepped into now with the college athletics but I'll say this again more people were talking about his dribble how many dribbles he took how many steps he took did he gather the ball did he push the ball did he lose control of the ball more people are talking about that than this guy and his personality and I'm saying to my boss I'm saying to my boss and I'm saying to myself what world are we living in come on it's basketball we can hit the freeze frame every second every half second every millisecond this game is taking place in real time I saw this man get the ball dribble to his left go up there was no there was no blatant travel and let's also be honest this is basketball this is sports if I have to think about the highest level of basketball how many calls do we even see like this anymore like how many travels do you see in an NBA game I feel like everybody is traveling let's go watch James Harden in his prime how much was he traveling okay sometimes Giannis Atteracumpo is so long looking at this dude go from half court to the forget the free throw line to the basket I'm like how many steps did he take was it one two a fee five four five how many steps did it take him to get down court it's basketball it's an art unless somebody's picking up the ball and they're going one two three four five there's a clip of LeBron James years ago he literally carried the ball down the court and they're like where's the that's a travel well you got an opportunity to win a game at the end of the game yeah calls calls can be missed some more blatant than others I can look at the NFC my apologies to the uh the Saints when they took on the Rams sorry to bring up an old wound people are always going to get calls wrong there's a reason why major league baseball has just been testing out this uh you know automatic balls and strikes there's a reason why sports has utilized technology there's a reason why the NFL for this upcoming season they're going to start trying to utilize technology to measure the first downs fourth downs third downs figure it out instead of sending out those old guys in their underwear or their pajamas sorry if the NFL had old guys in their underwear on the sideline that might be a that might be a different sport but the fact is people are going to make mistakes it's a part of the game it's a part of sports and even if it's at the end of the game big freaking deal this is what I always ball down to and this is what really bothers me so much about people arguing whether or not it was a travel or not this guy's name Gene Steratore something whatever his name is doesn't matter to me don't know him this man was a a ref on the college basketball side for 25 to 30 years and he sat down on television and he gave what was ultimately almost a one-minute explanation about whether or not this guy traveled and he ultimately said it didn't appear to be uh you know egregious of a travel if there was one I didn't see anything that caught my eye after given an explanation for one minute here it is for me if it's not blatant get over it as simple as that and if your point even if at all is it cost Colorado State the game no no it didn't I say this time and time again that is a lame ass excuse blame yourself do that do that that was a that was a half second that was one second that play was one second two seconds three seconds the dribble the extra dribble if there was one that was a half second out of what was a 40 minute game okay let's do this 39 minutes all right 55 seconds 56 seconds however long you want to cut it where was Colorado State the rest of the game they controlled their destiny throughout the course of the game up until that moment is that what happened the final shot the final two seconds the final three seconds that decided the game and not what Colorado State did the whole way so which one is it if I think about the Kansas City Chiefs when they win hey the games are rigged it's the referee's fault the referees are handing this game hey how do you figure this is not rigged when the Kansas City Chiefs lose you don't hear nothing about it right nothing it's not rigged the referees weren't on the take for that game this is all a part of the story it's what about this in college basketball what about this game that we just witnessed between Maryland and Colorado State what what happened there the referees just swallowed the whistle for Maryland to advance who cares all across America who cares brackets are busted all over the place what there's one dirty guy in Vegas who's a scamster a scheme stir trying to manipulate things the first five seconds is just as important on the scoreboard as the last five seconds is it more intense yes are there more eyes and ears paying attention and watching yes but it's still a part of the 40 minutes and so if you gotta whine if you gotta cry about a travel on Monday after that amazing shot find something better to do please like complaining about the early at 39 minutes do that there's somebody else who doesn't care is the head coach of Colorado State Nico Medved who by the way is not sticking around at Colorado State this man is going to Minnesota after the game he was asked about the call the no call the travel the gather and he said you know what doesn't matter I haven't seen the video yet it's gonna be hard for me to watch I'm sure I will at some point I I don't know I don't know I don't know maybe it was maybe it wasn't but it doesn't matter they didn't call one so you know whether it was or wasn't they didn't call one and they never go back and and change the call but again he made a really difficult shot guys I mean he made a really really difficult shot and they just made one more play than we did done is spoken by a guy who who's heavily invested in the outcome of the game and not just some guy you know financially invested in the game afterwards who wants to complain about something because he's out a couple hundred a couple thousand dollars okay enjoy the rest of this ride here okay just enjoy the ride let's see what Maryland and this this young Derek queen can do up against the Gators who I'll say it again thank you so much for being Yukon let's see what what Rick Pitino and crew in Arkansas let's see what they do on Thursday like I'm heavily invested in the rest of the tournament not worried about whether or not we saw a travel call March Madness is about the personalities it's about guys like Amir Khan equipment manager who nobody heard of a couple of weeks ago and now he's he's probably more famous than any of the players currently in the tournament not named Cooper Flag we got a lot to pay attention to and stop worrying about the refs and get over that part it's the jr sport brief show here with you coast to coast on the infinity sports network we are just getting warmed up how about this I told you next hour we're gonna have a chat with Mike Latula he's gonna join us from the field of 68 we're gonna talk all things college basketball later on in the show I mentioned to you about those Arkansas Razorbacks yeah we got a fighting wild pig out here Connor Goodson is gonna join us from hog sport.com speaking of basketball Kyrie Irving with his torn ACL he had a lot to say uh sitting on a live stream for five hours I guess this happens that's what happens when you tear your ACL we're gonna talk about the fact that there are that there there are no cinderellas here there are no cinderellas has the transfer portal killed off the idea of a cinderella speaking of cinderella tiger woods he might have found his uh hickey what did they call cinderella did she have some fancy nickname the guy was the knight in shining armor and she was just cinderella well I think now we're oh wasn't that Rapunzel was looking for the Rapunzel's the Rapunzel's the lady who threw her hair out the window to get the man I don't know I'm now confusing myself it's well we'll find princesses mixed up here here we go tiger woods has found his princess right reportedly allegedly no no no allegedly it's confirmed that's what he said out of his own mouth he confirmed tiger woods said I got a girlfriend but uh let's keep it private I think he's like 16 all over and posted on facebook this man is tiger woods is so detached from reality he needs to announce on x that he has a girlfriend uh okay tiger woods what a guy his his girlfriend looks like every one of his wives I just uh anyway let's let's move on let's do that it's the jr sport brief show here with you on the infinity sports network speaking of moving on I already told you about one coach who's like man I lost now it's time for me to get my money somewhere else I'm gonna tell you about a bunch of coaches who have already left their teams for greener pastures and then we got a coach man he's taking over for the guy he just beat who knew that college basketball was like the hunger games or squid games or anything like this it's the jr sport brie show on the infinity sports network happy monday you're listening to the jr sport brief it is the jr sport brie show here with you coast to coast on the infinity sports network eight eight eight seven ten four isn that's eight eight eight seven ten four isn we opened up the show talking about the only buzzer beater that we've gotten here in march madness that's derek queen knocking off colorado state yesterday and then even a small a smaller bit note and I guess this is something we should all be used to at this point in time we've had so much much movement from the coaches side is that the guy who lost the head coach last night who lost to maryland nico medved he's already gone he's going to minnesota like he just lost to maryland and he's already gone from colorado state hey they go find somebody else to coach a team i'm out of here that's it like everybody is just a bunch of mercenaries the coaches the players it's a cash grab there used to be so much structure in in college athletics whether it be football or basketball you knew that you had a coach if it was any type of successful if he was any type of successful he was there for a while he was able to build a program and have a freshman and recruit them in and keep them in for a few years keep them for i don't know one year for at minimum if you were a super superstar going to the league but for the most part you know we got players who were sticking around for four years three and four years and getting the whole college experience now it's about the money you ask a talent like dirt queen why are you sticking around why do you listen to head coach kevin willard he says because he pays me there's a good enough reason tell me how you really feel and the coach is out for the same thing hey why are you switching schools because they pay me darien de vries him and his boy they're leaving west virginia for indiana he's replacing mike woodson we learned this last week why because indiana is going to pay him more than west virginia why did nico medved who just lost last night heartbreaking loss real like real tough huh ball goes off the glass high off the glass you lose you already got a job you already set up for your next job why because they're gonna pay him i mean over the course of the weekend we'll wait and we knew this for the better part of a week mcniece that the cinderella oh my god amir khan they nicknamed this guy aura he doesn't even play he's just the equipment manager excuse me he's the manager hickey is he the what are we calling is he the team manager equipment man is calling him the equipment manager disrespectful um no no because they do a lot of work behind the scenes that does not get the proper respect that they deserve i but i think manager sounds just managers all-encompassing he walks into him out the boombox he does other things i'm sure pick up towels it's true yeah right and now what he isn't that the first thing he became famous for he said of like picking up towels was he basically said i'm the time i'm the lebron james of people picking up towels that's what he said right i did see that quote now that you mentioned it but i think he got his fame from walking out the boombox oh wow bringing that swag as they walked out to the uh to the court and so now he's made what another 100k he's gonna learn about taxes soon huh oh he will smart man now look you got those brand deals on that boombox he wasted no time yeah amir khan good for him i heard he's gonna be going up to north carolina state with uh i guess coach will wade it's everybody is moving on to greener pastures to go get some cash and to go get some some money that's kind of crazy i have some positive words for my friends at uh nc state too later on in the show but everybody's getting that cash how about this ben mccollum who just a couple of seasons ago this guy was coaching d2 basketball he's winning championships in division two he helps take drake to the tournament and now he's going to be the new head coach of iowa replacing fran mccaffrey who's basically been there for i don't know 15 or 20 years it's like hey man you haven't been to the tournament recently it's time to give you the boot and so it doesn't matter who you are if you've been a coach for a long time it doesn't matter if you just showed up it doesn't matter if you just had success it's it's a land grab forget land it's a cash grab all these coaches just got to get their money the same way the players do you know ben mccollum two weeks ago when he was still the head coach of drake before accepting this job at iowa and he's from iowa ben mccollum was talking about what his ideal culture looks like i wonder if anything has to do with leaving i think the thing that that i've learned and continue to learn and almost just more solidified in my mind is tough kids and good kids high character kids allow you to win at an elite level you can win with low character kids for a year you cannot do it over time and you can't create a culture that churns out some of the best human beings that there are and i just continue to grow in that and continue to believe in that is that is that the goal to to churn out high quality human beings i mean i think that was part of the goal in the past i think that was a part of the goal a long time ago and i still think it might be the goal but right now this is all for profit like what coach is with a team for a year talks about developing a program full of high character guys and then leaves after a year to go get another job and so what happens if he has success next year is he going to tell us about how uh how high character his guys are at iowa he's not even gonna be around to see him graduate i don't know hickey is did he shovel everybody a load of crap right there no i think it's a fair answer um i think again like you know i think it's i think you can get on for like leaving drake to go to now to a big 10 school in iowa i think it is kind of one of those things where that's how you breed success and then of other teams conferences notice that success i think you can say that and still be authentic without looking like a fraud but why why say it in the first place i feel like i think it's it's it's it's a like the way the system is currently constructed in college basketball it's for business first and i i get it not every not every program is at the top of the mountain not every school is you know out here the majority of the schools you know the students aren't busting or busting around the coaches aren't bailing these are the schools that we don't know about but when it comes to the best of the best let's just say that the top 80 or so schools like it's it's dog eat dog like they're doing it to make money so when he's talking about hey we got the culture we want to have produced great young men you know this ain't no four-year school that's housing the guys you know through their junior or senior year that's where it sounds like crap to me but i guess do you still like if you're a coach right you're still a salesman don't you have to still sell no matter where you are don't you have to sell that idea this is what we're going to do and then if they leave after a year or two it's like okay well well that's a lie then i i guess you you're right you're right but it's still a lie being a salesman is like don't don't even say you don't have this we're going to produce what type of culture do i want i want to have high quality guys who want to show up to work like why are you talking about what you want to produce you don't care do do you really care how many of the guys do you really care about what they end up doing if you really cared so much you'd stay at the school and not leave now you're just gonna find another group to care i don't know icky this is like that dad who has two families in one town oh geez wow that might be the only ben mccollum comparison that will uh that will come about in that fashion wow right right you know just traveling across town just to say message to different families not practicing preaching huh yeah he's like hey i love i love you guys i'm here to make sure that you develop into the best uh you know it's the son of his kids his boys i'm here to help you develop into the best young man possible and then hickey leaves to go across town to his other family come on you can't do that you gotta stay you gotta stick it out otherwise it's a load of crap what if the family's paying them more though what the wife is maybe she's got a better job okay maybe okay that may be one reason hey we everybody gotta go follow the money i get it i get it when we come back we're gonna talk about somebody who really this is this is an even worse scenario imagine losing and then the guy who just beat you took your job what a world yeah welcome to the world of college basketball it gets even crazy on the other side it's the jr sport brief show on the infinity sports network i'll tell you who it is on the other side of the break you're listening to the jr sport brief it is the jr sport brief show here with you coast to coast on the infinity sports network man we talked about these these coaches and college basketball who are already moving on and figuring out where they want to go next he talked about the travel no travel last night by derek queen but before we move on i just i gotta get the worst case out the way of a coach moving on or at least one coach taking another coach's job how ironic what a what a terrible space rodney terry gets fired as head coach of the as head coach of the texas longhorns he loses to zavier in the first four zavier advances on into the tournament zavier then loses and so who is the new head coach of the texas longhorns it's the man who beat rodney terry zavier head coach sean miller he takes over when i heard this i had to go man what a world what a world rodney terry took over a couple of years ago after chris beard basically gotten uh well he was accused of domestic violence the charges were ultimately dropped but his job was dropped and rodney terry took over and then the guy who just beat rodney terry took over for him what a world this is what the news sounds like when it broke on cbs sports hq all right we are still following that breaking news out of college hoops where texas is hiring zavier sean miller as its next head coach that is the very latest from our very own matthew norlander miller has spent the past three seasons with zavier leading the musketeers to the tournament twice during that stretch he's going to replace rodney terry who was fired on sunday after three years in austin in 20 seasons as a head coach with zavier and arizona miller has made the tournament 13 times with nine appearances in the sweet 16 or better man tom flies like i feel like i was just looking at him at arizona forever this is what you chalk it up to and rodney terry would have seen he's still gonna get paid he wasn't long for the job anyway he wasn't i feel like he was the longest term interim head coach ever in period it just really stinks when you lose your job to the guy who just beat you rodney terry he'll uh he'll end up somewhere we'll see where he goes also speaking of ending up somewhere still on the college side but not in basketball on the football side today is cam wards pro day yeah the guy that everybody expects to be quarterback number one taken in front of uh shadore sanders cam ward is uh showing off down in miami not bad you think about all the nfl talent evaluators and the gms and whatnot just to make a trip down to miami is not the worst thing in the world and also for cam ward we heard and learned that the tennessee titans were selecting number one overall in the draft had decided well they didn't decide they took him more to dinner i know a big deal like what the freaking dude why wouldn't they take him to dinner what's the worst thing that could happen but i don't know just sitting down and having some face face time with someone who's considered to be the the top quarterback prospect in the draft it makes sense that you would want to sit down and and have more of a chat more of a conversation without a shadow of a doubt and it appears that i don't want to call i don't want to call the flirtation between the titans and cam ward it doesn't stop there jeremy fowler he was on sports center earlier today and he says it looks like the titans are looking to draft will levis's replacement well ward has certainly separated himself in the process as option one compared to the rest of the field over the last month certainly and the feeling around the league is that tennessee will be leaning that way if they haven't already then eventually will be leaning toward ward they have not made a firm determination yet i'm told the titans are going through a very thorough process but his interviews with tennessee went well he was able to identify mistakes explain them they feel like he can be coachable okay all right right that's nice to hear right that's i guess that's the opposite of shadora sanders is not coachable didn't do well in the meetings didn't take the meeting serious whatever you want to pay attention to and believe cam ward i'd be surprised if he wasn't qb1 just by everything that we hear expected to be taken number one and the titans if they don't take a qb then that's just another loser year for will levesters just turn the ball over and look miserable hickey do you think his mayonnaise commercials extend into a second year or do you think they gave him a one-in-one type deal i like the phrasing one-on-one i hope so for for their sake you can't be playing those commercials if he's riding the bench dare i say practice squad depending on you know what that situation happens you can't have that no way yeah this man there's no he's the only loser that's had commercials right recently only nfl loser with commercials yeah i mean people have jumped off the rustle wilson bandwagon so he's been dumped by advertisers who else is like a loser um oh wow yeah i guess right i don't know he was selling mandates they probably gave him that contract and said hey this is one year and if you do this you make the pro bowl rookie of the year whatever we give you another year you know but if you suck then just consider this a one-off i can see and keep that check is probably the last big one you're gonna get for a while yeah right but good for him you know really good for him eating mayonnaise and saying all that weird stuff and didn't he say he made it up yeah he basically admitted that he did it for attention that and eating a banana with the peel on um was that recorded uh that was so you can find that yeah wow so well he made money he he did what he wanted to do maybe bananas are what we should get into guys made money eating bananas with the peel on now on social media you see that people are wiping their face or using the banana peel to like scrub their face maybe there's you know we've had a bunch of ideas maybe we should go to the banana field what are you talking who's wiping their face with a banana have you not seen right now the i don't know who he is fred flintstone not fred flintstone who's wiping their face with a banana some quote-unquote influencer if you will right
