It is!
The JR Sportbreeze Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. Happy Friday to you, wherever you are, whatever you're doing. I hope you're well. I hope you're safe. I hope you're amazing. I hope your Friday is getting off to a hot start. Damn it, it's November 1st.
I hope your November has started off in spectacular fashion. I'll be hanging out with you for the next two hours. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia.
Thank you to everybody listening all over North America. I don't care if you are in Kansas. You could be in Wisconsin. You could be in Florida. You could be in Los Angeles. You could be in North Cali. You could be in South Cali.
I don't know where you're at. You could be a Dodgers fan, a Padres fan, a fan of the A's. Man, I still hate the fact that they're leaving Oakland.
I hate it. Anyway, it's Friday. Let's be positive.
We've got so much more to get into. Hey, let's be positive about Drew Alar. This man looks like he's all set and ready to go for Penn State, Lamar against The Ohio State University. Let's be positive about Lamar Jackson because he's positive even though he hasn't practiced this week until today.
His body maintenance, he's been knocked around, right? What else can we be positive about? Hey, I'm positive about this. In about 20 minutes, we're going to have Ryan Wood joining us from the Green Bay Post Gazette because we need to be positive for the Green Bay Packers as they get ready to take on the Detroit Lions.
These are two of the hottest teams in the NFL right now. We need to be positive. Never in my life did I think I'd say this, but we need to be positive about the groin of Jordan Love. Not like his groin is bothering him. I want him to play football.
I think he will. I think we'll get a shootout. Packers have won four straight.
Lions have won five straight. Trying to enter the month of November with some positivity. Got to be honest about the bad stuff, but positivity. Thank you so much to our producer holding it down in New York. Manny Rodriguez is here with us.
If you want to be a part of the show, you can. Shout out to all my truck drivers, my Uber drivers, my door dashes, my Lyft drivers, my food delivery drivers. Maybe it's groceries. Maybe it's pizza.
I don't know what you're doing. Shout out to the postal workers, Amazon, FedEx, UPS, airport workers, security contractors, bartenders, cooks, chefs. Shout out to the officers. Officers call up a lot. Police officer called the other day.
He's just like, Hey Jr. Oh, I got to go. Got an emergency. Yeah, go do that.
Go do that. Police officer, firefighters, military, the military. We know about the ones that are hanging in the ocean and submarines. Oh yeah. Shout out to people listening overseas using Waze. Okay.
Anyway, listen on the free Odyssey app, your local affiliate Sirius XM 158 and a smart speaker that covers everybody. So much more to get into in a few seconds. I'm going to tell you about Lamar Jackson, the man who returned to practice today. We'll get there in a minute.
8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. Let's talk to Dan. Dan is calling from lacrosse, Wisconsin.
You're on the JR sport. We show us up, Dan. Hey, there's a two places where quarterbacks go to die. Number two is Chicago and number one is Cleveland. And I can tell you, Flacco is a good quarterback just because Cleveland let him go. I mean, can you imagine if Flacco would be starting for Cleveland this year?
I mean, what, they had Bernie Kozar? So Belichick ran him out at the end. Yes.
Yeah. Flacco is a good quarterback. I mean, when he put him in the playoffs last year. And can you imagine what Flacco would have been doing with Cleveland right now?
It's guys impressive. Well, I mean, I'm spoiled with what? I mean, being a Paris fan. So you just want to beat up on other teams.
I'm talking about quarterbacks. And it's, you know, it's I'm spoiled. I get it. Yeah, you are.
I mean, enjoy. Look, and I'm over here wishing good on Jordan loves growing. OK, so I hope he plays. I think you'll be fine. I would I'd sit him with the weather and the way it is. And we got to buy next week. It's a tough game anyway.
You need a mobile quarterback. OK, well, that's one of the reasons why I'm taking the Lions is because even with a groin issue, even if he's not going to be 100 percent, who is at this time of the year? But with the groin outside, they said he's questionable.
That's what they're listing them as right now. Questionable. I think he's going to play. And we know Malik Willis has come on and he's done a good job.
But do you want to I don't want to say sacrifice a victory, but do you want to sacrifice a victory against a team like this is not going to be a leak. I mean, man, he is fast. And, you know, the great thing about the floor is he changes depending on the quarterback. He changes his game plan and it'll be a run heavy. You know, I think it's going to be a game on decision, obviously.
But you put Malik in there and I mean, the guy can run. And if you have that game plan, it could be interesting, especially on a wet field. It's supposed to be cold, windy and golf struggles in that area. So I you know, I'd like to see as a Packer fan.
I'd like to see love set and we got to buy, heal them up. OK, well, hey, Dan, we're going to find out soon enough what takes place. You don't have to wait but two more days. Appreciate you for calling from Wisconsin. OK. Yeah. All right.
Thank you so much to Dan. Now, they haven't lost a lot. I mean, Malik Willis. He's two and oh. He's completed seventy four percent of his passes. He has four total touchdowns. He has not turned the ball over and trying to hold things down. When Jordan Love has gone down, we know the first time he went down with that knee out in Brazil and now he's dealing with the groin issue. And we got to see this. These are two teams that we know are going to take it down to the wire anyway.
And congratulations as well. Dan from Wisconsin for taking a crap on the Bears. That's exactly what they needed. Right.
They needed you to come through and beat up on them. They got a quarterback now. Give him a break. Caleb Williams is here. There's no more Jake Cutler, nobody else coming through and screwing things up. So just. You'll be OK. You'll be fine.
And speaking of fine, I told you about this man. Likely, I can't say likely, but he's going to be in the conversation for NFL MVP. It's Lamar Jackson.
What else is new? I want to see him win another one. Hopefully he can get over the hump. The Ravens are five and three. They just lost to Cleveland. Lamar Jackson was upset. He threw his helmet down on the field.
He's like, damn it, you guys screwed this up. Well, we lost two thousand yards passing 17 touchdowns to interceptions. This man does not turn the ball over. Five hundred yards rushing already. So go along with two touchdowns.
You know what that means? 2014 with now with Derrick Henry, they rushed the living hell out of the ball. Lamar Jackson has been beat up. He hasn't practiced this week, not until today. Busted up knee, busted up back. He's hurt.
People were wondering whether or not he was going to play. And then next game against the Broncos, who are surprising, five and three with Bo Nix lead in the way. And so now taking a look at this team. You say, well, is Lamar starting to wear down already? We've seen what the Ravens are built around him.
This is I've never seen a team built so much around one player than this squad. And if he ain't out there, they have not a chance in hell of winning or competing for anything. And so what did they do? They sat him out of practice. And what did he do today? He came back to practice. And Lamar Jackson, he told everybody, hey, it was just just injury maintenance. I needed a little bit of a rest. At least I didn't rest out of a game like Anthony Richardson did.
Listen, Lamar. So big question. Do you feel like you're going to be able to play on Sunday? Yeah. 100 percent. Sorry. Excuse me. Was that ever a doubt for you or you knew right away?
No, that wasn't a doubt. Just resting my body. You know, it's a long season. That's all.
It is. It is a long season. He has taken the second most hits. Out of any quarterback. In the entire NFL.
And if there's one thing about Lamar. And we know that I don't care if you're in the pocket, out the pocket, you you're scrambling, you're running. We've seen him make the amazing plays. We've seen him behind the line of scrimmage. We've seen him go past the line of scrimmage. In most cases, past the line of scrimmage, he gets the hell up on out the way.
But when you have the ball in your hands as much as he does, when you're creating as much as he does, you're going to take some licks. And so credit to him for actually taking a play or a veteran day off. During practice.
Instead of like a game. Anthony Richardson, please take note. I mean, if Lamar Jackson says he's never come out of a game and been like, I'm tired, I'm tired. And what the hell is Anthony Richardson doing? Anyway, the Broncos a surprising five and three. I know Sean Payton is not missing Russell Wilson. Very happy with what he has in bow neck. Somebody who he can bully and tell to get rid of the ball whenever he wants it to. I got the Ravens winning this game.
Real simple, real simple. And speaking of quarterbacks that are hurt. Drew Aller and thank you, Manny. What Manny, what I call Lawler, a law, a law, too many, too many A's and a name like that, huh? Brian Hickey would not be happy with you. Hey, I'm sure he wouldn't. He'd be OK. He has to sit down and watch them lose tomorrow to the Ohio State University. And Aller is dealing with his own knee injury. He's hurt himself. But they say that he's going to be out there ready to go.
And you're damn right. They're going to need him. Head coach James Franklin. He gave the update. Yeah. At this stage, no new information for you guys.
Game time decisions. Quite so far, so good. And getting getting both Bo and Drew a ton of reps in practice. Well, that's good, right?
Lots of repetitions in practice means you will show up and go to work, you would think. Still not going to be 100 percent. Ohio State still has more offensive firepower. I mean, if we look back at past history, we can utilize that and say, oh, well, you know, Penn State is typically I can't even call them third banana.
Is that even appropriate? You know who the big dogs are. You got to take a look at Michigan, who's now they have fallen after winning a national championship. You think Mr. Harbaugh leaving the building and escaping punishment, taking more money to coach the Chargers. But it's still Ohio State.
James Franklin. Career wise, one in 12 versus top five teams. That means you are in third place. I don't care who the hell they just beat. They beat Wisconsin. Franklin also has a four and 16 record against Michigan and Ohio State. I just told you third banana. He has a three and 17 record against top 10 opponents. Third banana. And then when you take a look at taking on teams that are actually top five opponents. Penn State.
James Franklin specifically. He has a record of one in 12. Ouch. Yeah. Drew Allard can get his leg all twisted up against Wisconsin.
This. I don't see anything positive coming out of the game tomorrow. Poor super producer and host Ryan Hickey is going to have to suffer at least the weather. I hope is is going to be good. I know Will Howard is going to be excited to go and play out there. No doubt about it. I think back in the day.
Well, not that far back in the day. And Penn State said, no, thank you to Mr. Will. I got the Ohio State University coming out on top of that one. There's your update on injured ass quarterbacks. Well, at least one is resting and one got his knee twisted up. It's the JR sport re show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network.
855 212 42 27 is the number that's 855 212 42 27. We are going to take a break. You already heard our caller Dan from Wisconsin. He had a lot of comments about what he wants to see from the Green Bay Packers. He wants to see Malik Willis out there and not Jordan Love. Let Jordan Love heal up. Let Malik Willis take the punishment. Let him go out there and try to get the W against the Lions. On the other side, we're going to have a chat with Ryan Wood. He covers the Green Bay Packers for the Post Gazette.
We'll ask him and get his thoughts. Should Jordan Love be out there? Is it too risky for the rest of the season?
He has been known to get banged up. And what does this mean for the Packers for the rest of the year and all the wide outs he has to throw the ball to? We'll get into Josh Jacobs and why he doesn't get a lot of attention, the defense and the takeaways that they create. We're going to talk about this Packers and Lions matchup and what is a ridiculously competitive NFC North. You're locked into the J.R. sport reshow here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. Ryan Wood coming up next.
It is the J.R. sport reshow here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. And we had so many callers asking about the Packers. People asking about their opponent and the Lions and what's up with Jordan Love? Should he play?
Should he not play? And what about the division at the end of the season? So to talk about all things Packers. Joining us right now is someone who covers them for the Green Bay Post Gazette.
It's Ryan Wood. Hey, Ryan, thank you for taking the time and joining us. Absolutely, man. How's your Friday night? Hey, listen, I'm rolling. I'm having a great time. I got nothing to complain about. That's good. Yeah. You know, we did the wildest thing yesterday up here in Green Bay. Oh, we trick or treated without wearing a coat.
So we can't complain either. What are we talking? We talk in 70s, 80s. OK. All right. We're a little different up here.
It was in the up the upper 50s. OK. But then for October 31st, we're doing cartwheels over that. OK. All right. What were you as Halloween, if I can ask Ryan? Go ahead. My my my two sons wanted to be a football player. So I was a blind ref, you know, trying to keep them in line, you know, wore the referee shirt, had a flag, had the the aviators on just how it's doing what I could. All right. Listen, that sounds very close to reality, Ryan.
We appreciate you for doing your part. Hopefully there are no blind refs in this game with the Packers and Lions on Sunday. Oh, I guess right out the gate, Ryan. Do you expect to see Jordan Love out there? I think so. Question mark. Look, the Packers hold this very, very close to the vest.
Frankly, I think Matt Lafleur enjoys being manipulative and trying to do a sleight of hand with the other team and keeping everyone guessing. The real indicator is potentially going to come tomorrow. If they elevate practice squad quarterback Sean Clifford, then that's a real sign. That'll be Malik Willis because they've got to have a backup.
Right. If they don't elevate Sean Clifford, they're probably going with Jordan Love and Malik Willis will be back into the backup role. I think nobody expected Malik Willis to get as much play that he has already, but he has certainly done a solid job. How would you view this team if Malik was tasked with going out there? We know the Lions like to light up the scoreboard.
Malik would be able to compete, though, at least right. You know, he can give you what you, what any team hopes you have when it's a backup quarterback, and that's a fighting chance. You don't go into a game with your backup quarterbacks and you want to roll up on the opponent. It just doesn't happen in this league, but most backup quarterbacks, you don't have a fighting chance.
You're just hoping you don't get rolled over yourself. What he has done this season in two starts and then playing most of the second half last week in Jacksonville to the tune of a 130 passer rating, three wins for the Packers. Granted, they were all against AFC South opponents. The schedule has been very favorable early in the season, but it's still a backup quarterback. It's been something close to a football miracle. He didn't arrive until after training camp.
He didn't have a single practice rep, all of training camp. He gets into a new system, new playbook, new play caller as head coach, and you would think that he's been here a couple of years. The way that this team has been able to, on the fly, build an offense around him, it's been a football miracle.
It's something I've never seen before. Matt LaFleur himself said that he's never seen anything like this before. Certainly it's a fighting chance. Now it's the Lions, right? Like you said, 52 points in three quarters last week, even if it is the Tennessee Titans defense. That's impressive against any NFL opponent. The Packers absolutely know that they have their hands full with this Lions team, 6-1, a short list contender that represents the NFC in the Super Bowl. They absolutely know what's coming, but a fighting chance when you have a backup quarterback, if that's the case, you can't ask for much more than that. Ryan Wood is joining us, covers the Packers for the Green Bay Post-Gazette.
You talk about joining this team. Josh Jacobs, this is his first year with the squad coming over from the Raiders. Not the same type of running back, the same type of dual threat that Naren Jones was. How and what has Josh Jacobs brought to this team? Because, you know, nationally you don't really hear a lot about him and he's been running a while. Yeah, you don't hear much about him. He's top five in the league in rushing and tied for the league lead in rushing attempts.
And I think that that's where the biggest difference is. It's a consistent reliability week in and week out that he can be a workhorse. You can give him 25, even 30. Week two against the Colts, Malik Willis' first start, he had 32 carries in that game. Aaron Jones never had 30 carries.
That was not happening no matter who was the quarterback. Aaron Jones, he's a beautiful runner. It's watching poetry to watch him carry the Rockets to the open field. Josh Jacobs will get you a lot of tough gritty yards.
It's a lot of four or five yard, just push the pile. And every once in a while, as he did last week, he'll break one open 38 yard touchdown. The difference is when you have a guy that you can give the ball week in and week out to even in September, October, early in the season, that many times, you know that going in, you're going to have balance as an offense because you have a guy that can take that kind of workload. It takes a lot of stress and pressure off your quarterback.
It sets up your play action game. It's not just the yards he gets. It's the consistent reliability that he brings to this offense. Hey, Ron, if we flip over to the defense, we talked about the Lions and we know how much they're going to be airing the ball out hot. Well, not he's gone now, but we think about Jamison Williams being gone as well. And then you think about the Packers basically leaving the world in takeaways. We saw Xavier McKinney start off the year with an interception streak. Jair Alexander is getting paid all the big bucks.
He's dealing a little nicked up himself. How the hell are they going to stop or slow down this this offense? You know, one just fascinating tidbit about the Lions that I didn't even realize until today, every game they played this season has been inside adult. They haven't played outdoors yet. Obviously they play inside of dome themselves. And then they've, there's all three of the road games this season have been inside. So I think it's going to be very interesting. Look, this lion's offense on the fast track, on a turf, watch out.
It's lights out. They do everything well. Jared Goff has played very well, but he's surrounded by playmakers. Talk about the running game to take a stress off a quarterback. Obviously they're two headed monster, and then they're explosive in the receiving game. They have a tight end everywhere you look, this Packers defense is going to have to match up because there's no weaknesses here, but the Packers defense under Jeff Halfley has been a different unit.
They've taken the ball away that they, they blown past already at the midway point of the season, their interception numbers last year, their takeaway numbers, they're leading the league in takeaways. Xavier McKinney, I mentioned he was the NFC defensive player of the month for the month of October. What he said about that was, yeah, I felt like there was another month.
I might've should have gotten it too. Speaking of September, all he did in September, every single game that Xavier McKinney played in September, he had an interception. He had six interceptions in eight games.
So I think it's going to be fascinating. Teams have stopped really throwing the ball deep on this Packers defense because of the influence of Xavier McKinney on the back end. We know the lion's offense doesn't fear anybody, nor should they. They got a lot of playmakers.
That's a rock and a hard place. What's going to happen there when they throw it deep, you got to know where number 29 is because he will take the football away from you. I think that's a fascinating match from this game.
Yeah. The Green Bay Packers, four straight wins the lions, five straight wins, Packers leading the NFL in takeaways. Would you play Jordan love knowing that you have this game? We know he's questionable knowing that you have a buy after this. He could get two weeks off.
We know that this division is ridiculously competitive. The Vikings are still kicking after a two game losing streak, but starting five and oh, you know, the bears, maybe they can, you know, scratch their way into something. Would you put Jordan love out there? I hate to sound all coach speakish, but I really do think it comes down to whether or not the medical is good on him. It's a growing, it's a soft tissue injury. If there's a significant risk of re-aggravating a soft tissue injury and have it become a bigger problem for the second half of the season, then no, it's just not worth it.
But if it's a green flag, then absolutely you put them out there. Whether it's a bi-week next week or not. Y'all it's funny.
I asked Jordan love this week point blank. Does it have anything to do? I mean, it's the lions, you know, it's not week two against the Indianapolis Colts. It's this team. It's the team that you came into the season knowing they were going to be in your way and you're going to be in their way to get to where you wanted to go. And this is the game you have at home.
Is there anything to this? And it was funny to hear his answer because right out of the gate, he's like, yeah, I mean, it's, it's, it's that this opponent, it's a significant and then he's like, well, it'd be like that for any team, any team, you know, you want to, I want to play every game. You want it, you want to be on the field, but there is something to this.
There's absolutely something to this game, this opponent, the lions, not just the rivalry, but the fact that these might be the two best teams in the NFC as the one game you have them in your place. Yeah. He wants to be out there without question.
It just goes back to the medical. Yeah. Well, I mean, they're going to be paying him $55 million a year. I'm glad he's showing up to work instead of, you know, Anthony Richardson. He gets tired.
He wants to sit down. Yeah. There's none of that here with them. I certainly hear that. And when you look at the team and what they did last year, kind of riding the ship and going on a hot rod, now having these massive expectations, have you seen anything different in the squad? Have you seen anything different in love knowing that, hey, you got big money coming in the next bunch of years? Hey, these are the expectations, the same old guy. I think the biggest difference this season compared to last is the last two months of last season, Jordan Love didn't throw the football to the other team. Then he gets the contract extension. As you said, the $55 million a year guy, he's got nine interceptions, five and a half games. Now he's making a ton of plays too. And that's, you know, he, the first half of last season, he was throwing the ball to the other team before he went 10 games, one pick down the stretch. He was struggling with interceptions early last year. The difference was that he wasn't making a lot of big plays.
He was swimming a little bit, right? He was trying to get his bearings and figure out this league and how to play at this level week in and week out with the defense, trying to take away what you do. Well, he's making a ton of big plays now, but you almost want to watch him play. You almost want to fall back in love with your checkdown, a checkdown on a loaded offense like this, taking the easy underneath pass and let your playmakers work. Not everything has to be downfield vertical all the time, just because you have the arm to do that. And just because there are a lot of big plays when you do that, you can take, you can make life easy on yourself too.
So I think that's the biggest difference. Nine interceptions and five and a half games. And it's the biggest Malik Willis. The one thing that the thing that he's done the best is been the fact that he hasn't had a turnover yet. Two and a half games, not one turtle Jordan love told me two weeks ago that the number one goal for him is a hundred percent ball security through an entire game. And then last week he throws an out route to Romeo Dobbs that has no throwing window gets picked off.
It's it's knowing that being sure with your reads, taking the easy stuff when it is there and not making everything so hard on each stuff, just because you can't. Well, we know he got a, he got a lot of wide outs to spread the ball out to. Here's a bell cow back at, I guess one of the last of them that we have as a defense, taking a ball away. When you look at these, these Packers, is this a team that can, well, they can go to the super bowl. Would you favor them with this wide open NFC? I picked the lions not only to win the NFC north, but to win the NFC going into the season and Aiden Hutchinson's injury makes a big difference.
I mean, no question about it, that, that, that is, that is a potential game changer. But to me, these might be the two most talented rosters in the NFC. The biggest difference between these two teams is just the lions have a little bit more season. Both teams are pretty young.
The lines just have a little bit more season. Jared Goff has been in a super bowl. The lions as a team got one step further, got knocked out by the same opponent, same six 49ers last year, but they got to the NFC championship game.
They got one step further. This Packers team is very, very young. It's still last year that they're the youngest locker room in the NFL. They're still the youngest locker room in the NFL. You have to usually as a young team that's up and coming, take your lumps before you get over that hurdle. That to me is the biggest question. Have they taken enough lumps in 2024 for their talent, for their experience to catch up to their talent? Cause if they do, they can beat anybody.
There's no question about that. I think for that reason, midway point of the season, obviously being at home, the lions are a tremendous litmus test for where they are because they look into a mere reflection when they see the other side of the field. Well listen, Ryan, as we know in professional sports, young teams sometimes, most times they have to get knocked down a few times before they get up and rise to being champions. Ryan, I appreciate the time. Where can people follow you and all of your work with the Green Bay Post Gazette?
Hey, packersnews.com and then on Twitter at by Ryan Wood. Thank you, Jay. I appreciate you. Ryan, you enjoy the rest of the week and you got candy leftover?
Oh my goodness. You know, I'm the kind of dad, I'm very, I'll say encouraging when it comes to trick or treating about go get more, go get more because I mean, I know I'm going to be stealing stuff. So, you know, I want to, they need to have a big enough pile that when I start taking, they don't notice.
And I would say that we are very successful on that front. You're going to have candy to last until next Halloween then, huh? Next Easter's covered. I don't, sometime next summer we might run out, but we're covered through Easter. My man, Ryan, you sound like somebody's old grandma got all the candy in the bag, Ryan.
That's right. It's just mountains of candy now in the bedrooms here. I hear that.
The densest dream. Ryan, you enjoy the weekend. Okay. All right. Take care. No doubt about it.
That Ryan Wood from the Green Bay Post Gazette. Yeah. I hope you stole some candy too. Like Halloween just can't be for your kids unless somebody is giving away money for Halloween and steal that money and keep it. Kids are going to do it money wasted. 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27.
That's 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. You know, Ryan just made a point about young teams having to get knocked down and you got to go through the grind before you actually become a championship caliber team. And we're going to take a break. When we come back on the other side, I do want to tell you that young teams, young players, they got so much to learn. One thing that I cannot understand that I've seen twice this week are players making stupid mistakes that cost your team's points. I'm going to explain on the other side of the break. We saw it last night. There was another instance of it between the Falcons and the Buccaneers. I'll explain. But right now here on the Infinity Sports Network, it's time for a newsflash with Chris LaPresti. It's the JR Sportbreeze show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27.
That's 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. Thank you so much to our last guests. You missed them in the last break. We were joined by Ryan Wood from the Green Bay Post Gazette.
Thank you, Ryan. I mean, he told us why Jordan Love is likely going to play. It's the Lions.
It's a divisional matchup. This guy's going to be making $55 million a year. At minimum, he can show up to work and do his job like that's that's at minimum that you can ask at minimum in certain people.
And I say Anthony Richardson, we know he was doing his job early this week until he until he got he got tired. I guess that's just how things went there. A guy got tired. He said, I can't do this. I need a blow.
And now he's on the bench. Don't don't be that guy. Listen, folks, I need you to think O'Reilly Auto Parts for all of your car care needs.
Get guaranteed low prices and excellent customer service from the professional parts people at O'Reilly Auto Parts. And speaking of doing your job, I thought this was I thought this part of the job in football in the NFL, I thought that this was simple. Maybe I've been missing something. I feel like you learn this when you're in Peewee scoring a touchdown. Like even there's so many people. Come on. I know it's America's biggest sport.
Twenty billion dollars. This people watch the Super Bowl. I know all of that.
But everybody. Children understand the concept of scoring a touchdown. You run, you run, you run, you run, you run, you run until you cross the big line at the end. Touchdown. The ball has to cross the line. Touchdown.
Yeah, you may have a novice fan, a casual fan who just watches during the Super Bowl or maybe they sit and watch with you. They may they may go, hey, what they explain this. What's this down thing? You got to explain it in the penalties. You got to explain it. Look, the referees can't even explain the penalties. There are a lot of intricacies to football that that are very confusing.
But a touchdown is not. And so last night, as we were right here on the air, we saw what has become one of the worst things in football and not just on the professional level, but on the college level as well. We saw an NFL player. We saw a football player have the ball in his hand or hands and then start to celebrate by dropping the ball.
Wait for this. Before it crosses the line into the end zone. Awful.
Terrible. Last night, the New York Jets, their rookie wide receiver Malachi Corley, this man threw away a touchdown because he wanted to celebrate. And instead of the New York Jets getting six points and an extra point, six, seven points, the New York Jets had zero. Heading into halftime because Malachi Corley, instead of just taking the ball a couple of feet or inches into the end zone, threw it away in excitement. It went out of the end zone and the Texans ended up with it. And the Jets had nothing.
Mind numbing. I want you to listen to this last night in the Jets came out on top at the end, we saw the amazing play by Garrett Wilson. I want you to listen to Al Michaels and Kirk Herb Street talk about this, this fumble, which is one of the dumbest things that any football player could do on the field.
This is from Amazon. The runner dropped the ball before crossing the goal line. The ball then subsequently rolled to the back of the end zone out of bounds, which is considered an immediate recovery. It is a touchback. It's a first down for the defense. There's the ball. There it goes, rolling to the back line. Once that ball hits that white, it's the Texans' ball for a touchback and the rookie Corley.
What in the heck is he thinking? Why the urgency for some of these guys could drop the ball before they, even if it's close, finish the play. Absolutely. Get in the end zone.
You see it time and time again. To the first rush of his career, he'll remember forever. Yeah, because he dropped a touchdown. Not because he was startled, not because the ball was jarred out of his hands, but because he wanted to celebrate. Come on.
Finish the damn job. We dropped this past Sunday. Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Falcons ended up winning the game. Kyle Pitts, the gigantic basketball-sized tight end for the Atlanta Falcons, he did the same exact thing, except for there was no good camera angle. I know the NFL got cameras everywhere. There was no pylon camera to get the angle. They didn't have a good enough camera angle to say, hey, we'll overturn it. It counted as a touchdown.
Kyle Pitts got his touchdown. But we see this, like I said, at every level of football. I feel like I see this once a week in college.
I see it now two damn times this week in the pros. What's so hard about, I don't know, doing your job? The simplest part, the easiest part of doing your job. That's like me showing up to work with no headphones so I can hear the callers, right?
I don't know. This is like an accountant. I would think unless you are a member of the highest level of Mensa, I would think you need a calculator, right?
Or you need a pen, you need a ledger, you need to write something. You're a construction worker showing up to work without a hard hat. Come on. An NFL player, the simplest part of the job, the easiest and what's supposed to be the funnest part of the job is scoring a touchdown.
Do that part first and then celebrate. Come on. I don't know. Do NFL head coaches do Pee Wee head coach? Do we need to do this at the flag football level? Do coaches need to run drills throughout the week? When you have the ball and you approach the end zone, make sure that it actually crosses the goal line.
Is this what we need? Everybody's so ready to do a stupid dance and celebrate. They don't even get the part about the scoring. I mean, I guess football is different. You can't celebrate a slam dunk. You have to do it first.
But we have seen guys take three point shots, turn around, and then the shot misses off the glass. Dumb stuff. Get the job done first before you go out there and celebrate.
Otherwise, you just look like a dumb loser. Nobody wants that. New York Jets instrument head coach Jeff Olbrich. He was asked about this.
What shall we call it? A mistake. Listen to what he had to say about this rookie making a mistake. Definitely frustrated, you know, to be honest and angry.
At the same time. But what an amazing opportunity for this kid to grow and learn from. You know, I promise you, 10 years from now, when he's still playing in this league, that will never happen again. Okay.
All right. You hope? You got to take it as a learning opportunity, right? We've had a lot of NFL players have to learn some things this week, right? They're still young.
They're young men. And I guess I'll stay away from that joke about finishing. But you as you get older, you got to learn how to get the job done. Okay. It's simple as that. If you're Anthony Richardson, stay in the game, finish the game, stay that extra play.
Don't tap out. Come on. You're a leader.
Malachi Corley, Kyle Pitts. Y'all want to score the ball. Score the ball first and then celebrate after. Make sure that the job is done. It's simple. People make the easiest things. It's so damn complicated.
Maybe there's a reason a Falcons always choke games, and maybe there's a reason right now the New York Jets are, let's check again, three and six. Finish the job. It's simple. Finish the job. Maybe you actually become a winner.
It's the JR Sport Breeze Show here with you coast to coast on the Infinity Sports Network. If you want some JR wisdom, it's real simple. Just don't celebrate too soon.
