It is the JR Sport Brief Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network.
Coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you to everybody tuned in and locked in all over North America. Happy Monday. I hope you're good. I hope you're safe. I hope you're well. I hope you're good.
I hope you're smooth. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. And if you didn't too bad, the weekend is over. It's Monday. It's 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific. This is when I get started every single weekday.
I'm in Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you to our super producer and host Ryan Hickey, holding it down for us in New York City. Oh man, we got so much to get into. A lot. A lot of football, college, the NFL. Damn it, we got Major League Baseball playoffs going on right now.
I'll give you an update about that in a second. We got Monday Night Football. The week isn't over yet. We got the Chiefs. We got the Saints. Got some quarterbacks who are looking bad.
We got some teams that are looking good. Had some upsets. What a day. What a Monday. What a weekend.
We're going to talk about it all. You can always listen to the show on the free Audacy app, A-U-D-A-C-Y. You can lock in on your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate. If you have Sirius XM, it's channel 158. If you have yourself a smart speaker, ask the speaker to play the Infinity Sports Network.
Oh, so simple. Yep, over the next four hours, we're going to talk about the good, the bad, the ugly. If you want to participate in the show, you sure can. We got a phone number. We got lines. The number is 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. Me, you can find me on the internet. I'm everywhere.
I am at JR Sport Brief. Super producer and host, Ryan Hickey, amongst all of the amazing things that took place this weekend. How are you?
Good. I think my head is still spinning from, like you said, just everything going on from the college football chaos to some NFL upsets to playoff baseball that has barely kept me alive so far. It was a hell of a weekend. I think I've gotten my head on straight again, at least for now.
Yeah, it's nuts. We saw over the weekend, we saw a goalpost go into a river. Shout out to Vanderbilt knocking off Alabama.
Thank you very much. Last night, I don't know if this is good. We saw violence at the plate. The Padres beat up on the Dodgers, but then we almost saw violence coming out of the stands. You got fans trying to throw the ball at Profar. We had Bronny James debut on the court against his dad. And yeah, it's the preseason. Who cares? But LeBron James standing next to Bronny and then Bronny's thinking to join up. It was a little something there to it.
Okay. The Bengals lost to the Ravens. That was a crazy game. They're just going back and forth and back and forth. And now the, the Bengals really suck.
They're in a toilet right now. Bill's lost to the Texans by a field goal. I call that one to the gentleman who likes to call from Buffalo. And then last night, well this morning, depending on where the hell you live, we had Sunday night football that didn't finish until 1 a.m. because of all the lightning that was taking place in Pittsburgh. We saw that. The Cowboys went out there, beat the Steelers 20 to 17 last night. So a wild, wild weekend. And then right now, as I told you, the Tigers are in a 0, 0-1 a hole in their series against the Cleveland Guardians. And right now in the seventh in Cleveland, nobody has a run-up on the board yet. So no score there.
So in the New York Yankees, they'll be in action in about another 30 minutes, excuse me, another 90 minutes or so as they get ready to try to go up 2-0 against the Kansas City Royals. So it was a busy, busy weekend. Hickey, if I had to ask you, highlight of the weekend for you, what was it?
Oh man. Try? I would say game one, Mets beating the Phillies in the way they did. And then in the next game, not so good.
Not so good. That and seeing Vanderbilt actually celebrate beating a good team for once, which was insane. You know, we're going to get into that, that Vanderbilt win. Because you know, I told you last week I'm done with the Bulldogs that can't score worth a damn. And then we have Alabama that comes out and they lay an egg against Vanderbilt. And you think about all the points that they had to give up in that almost Georgia comeback, all the points they gave up to Vanderbilt.
Maybe the board got everything figured out on the offensive side of the ball, but maybe he still needs to figure things out on the defense. We're going to get into all of that. Hickey, I got to tell you, while all of this was going on, uh, the WWE was here in Atlanta. And so I went by state farm arena and I took some family and some friends to, to go see, uh, this, uh, pay-per-view bad blood. And I was thrilled. The rock came out at the end.
He didn't say anything and everybody loved it. It was great. Wow. Okay.
That's pretty cool. Yeah. I've never seen the rock. You know what? To be honest, I've never even seen a rock movie, man.
Never seen a rock movie. Oh really? Yeah.
And I haven't seen the tooth fairy. What does he do? That was the first one in my head. Yeah.
I don't know. The tooth fairy. He was the Pharaoh. I never saw none of them Pharaoh movies.
I've never seen a fast. He's in the fast and the furious. A couple of them, right? I believe so. Yeah. He's in the other guys for like a quick cameo.
The other guys never even heard that. I don't know what that is. Now, Mark Wahlberg. Okay. Nope.
Nope. I've never seen the rock in a movie ever, ever, ever. But you saw him now in real life?
I did. He came out in the shades of Versace vest and he didn't say anything. He stood around and people went nuts and he left.
He basically threatened the guys in the ring and then he left. Great stuff. Good stuff. Not a bad gig either. What?
To show up? Well, doesn't he make more money than anybody? I guess so. And he does less work, it sounds like, than anybody as well. He sounds like Deshaun Watson, right? You show up, make a lot of guaranteed money.
You don't do anything. Minus the off-field. Absolutely. Oh, well, I hope the rock is not involved in, well, he hasn't been called on any of those things. So I'll leave that exclusively to Mr. Deshaun Watson. And then you want to talk about the weekend.
Oh my God. Even, even the New England Patriot. He was arrested over the weekend and Jabril Preppers. We'll get into that because the Patriots got a lot of issues. The Jets have issues. Devante Adams with the Raiders. It looks like they are trying to solve their issues as soon as possible with that trade.
And so we got a lot to get into, but let's get this out the way. Last night, trying to end an entire day of football, sitting up watching the New York Jets look pathetic against the Vikings. The Vikings equally looking pathetic, but the Jets looking worse in London. Watching that game in London, the New York Jets then lose.
The Vikings now have a record of 5-0. Moving on into the afternoon and then watching the Bills and go out there against the Texans. And then also watching the Bengals and the Ravens and then waiting for the night game, wanting to see what the Steelers can do against the Cowboys. I don't got faith in neither one of these teams. I take a look at the Steelers and I go, okay, this is, this is some ugly winning that they've been doing. And I look at the Dallas Cowboys and I say, all the damn Cowboys, almost all of them, are hurt. And so it took a sober touchdown at the end, touchdown at the end to win the game. And the Steelers, you can throw that three game winning streak to start the season out of the window.
The Dallas Cowboys are still showing signs of life, which they'll do all season long. But I was upset because of the storm. 90 minutes? 90 minutes? Hickey, I got up, I cleaned the house. I said, what am I doing sitting here? If I sit here, I'm gonna fall asleep. I got up and clean the house. Smart.
That's actually very smart because, yeah, I think if I was at home, not here at the studio getting ready for the show, I would have probably sat on my couch, probably passed out, woke up about 1230. Oh, fourth quarter. Perfect timing.
Let's go. Bro, I did pass out. I did. I fell asleep. I fell asleep asleep. I fell asleep in the third quarter. And I think I woke up and I think he just threw the touchdown to Talbert. And I said, oh, OK, well, the Steelers look like they were going to win. And then the Cowboys were threatening. And then I fell asleep and then I woke up and the game was over. And I'm like, how it was. How long did I sleep?
How long was I passed out? What did I miss? I woke up late enough to see Mike Tomlin mad at the world, which is nothing unusual because Mike Tomlin now, you know, he has some decisions that he has to make. Justin Fields has been flipping and turning the ball over all over the damn place. I mean, we had the broadcast on. They were talking about how eventually Russell Wilson might come back or they're preparing for him to be ready to go. Well, I mean, after a two game losing streak and it turned into a three game losing streak and what happens if it's a four game losing streak, they're going to tell this man, hey, sit down.
And you would think that that Russell Wilson, given his resume, that he would deserve a chance, a shot and an opportunity to kind of steer this ship for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin last night, he told the media, he said, listen, people, the Cowboys didn't beat us. We beat ourselves, compliment our guys on their efforts. It was a hard fought game tonight, but it's not mystical about the outcome. I just thought we didn't do enough over 60 minutes to position ourselves specifically. I thought we started slow offensively and I thought it was self-inflicted wounds, penalties and things of that nature to get us off schedule. I didn't think we were as connected as we should have been defensively in some moments in the first half. Didn't necessarily manifest itself in the terms of points, but it was some field positional flipping like chunks and things of that nature. I thought we settled down, um, and clean some of that up over the second half.
Okay. They, they still can't score. I mean, all these weeks, week after week after week, the Steelers have now fallen to three and two. Every week they're struggling to score. Justin Fields only passed for 131 yards yesterday at two touchdowns. He also went out there and rushed for 27, not a hell of a lot that they're having difficulty doing anything and Fields is, he's fumbling the ball, you know, luckily for him, they ain't snatching it up all the damn time, but you got to hold onto the rock.
He is, he is, I'm not saying he's almost handing his job over to Russell Wilson when he's ready, but he is, you know, Justin Fields and trying to think about how ugly this team looks and how many points they cannot score. Take a listen to what Justin Fields, what is the Steelers offense besides a rock fight? What are the identity options in football? I've never heard of a team having an identity. I think we have an identity. I just don't know.
Um, you know what it is like, I never heard, uh, uh, necessarily an option for, you know, an identity. Um, I think we ran the ball well today. Um, like I said, I think we just missed shots and, you know, shot ourselves in the, in the foot again. So, um, you know, I, I don't think, you know, we're one of those teams looking for identity. I think, you know, who we are, um, you know, we're a team that, you know, predicates on, you know, running the football and, um, staying on schedule on first and second down and then executing on third down, but we just didn't, you know, get the job done.
So, um, I don't know that words, uh, you know, necessarily label the identity, but those are some, you know, intangibles and characteristics of, you know, who we are as an offense. Hickey, did he, did he answer the question in both the positive and the negative? Yes.
Yes, he did. Okay. I'm just making, I'm making sure he's like, I don't know what the identity of the team is, but we know who we are, but we don't have one. We're not looking for one, but we are a team that wants to run, but then we don't have an identity and we're not looking for one, but we like to run and execute on the bra.
You sound confused. I mean, what happens if we put Justin Fields and Nick Sirianni in a room right now? God forbid these guys would be talking in circles. And if Justin Fields can't figure it out on the football field and he's going to end up seeding this job to Russell Wilson.
Now that's something I don't want. I like the Steelers. I like to root for the Steelers. I want to see them go out there and when they got the Raiders next, they got their own problems with the quarterback.
They don't know if they want Gardner Minshew out there, Aiden O'Connell, and we happen to see both of them yesterday. I'll tell you this. It's going to be Russell Wilson time the minute that he's ready because the Steelers, they're not going anywhere. I mean the entire season, every game has been ugly. The Steelers is almost like you're going to go to a restaurant. The food isn't going to taste good, but maybe it's good for you.
I don't know. The Steelers are like vegetables. You don't want to eat vegetables, but you have to if you want to be healthy and stay alive.
It's not enjoyable, but it's good for you. Come on. They beat the Falcons here by scoring 18 points. They beat the Broncos by scoring 13. They beat the Chargers by scoring 20. They lost to the Colts 24 points and last night against Dallas, a team that didn't have Michael Parsons, didn't have Demarcus Lawrence. They went out there and they could only muster 17 points.
And they could only muster 17 points. The Steelers are always going to be a good story. They're going to be even more of a story. Once Russell Wilson and his calf, once they're ready to basically go.
Thank you so much for the nightcap. Steelers, Cowboys. And I fell asleep.
Tough. At least we got more football tonight. I'll be in the studio. I have no choice but to watch.
It'll be right here in front of me. We got the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints. The game will kick off about two hours from now and you can watch it. We got baseball going on right now.
We have more baseball in about an hour and change with the New York Yankees and the Royals. We're going to talk some more football. We talked about Vanderbilt knocking off Alabama.
We had Arkansas going out there knocking off Tennessee. We got players, unfortunately, who are getting knocked off. We got NFL players who've been arrested. Now we have even more quarterbacks who might get the boot.
It's not just Justin Fields. We got a lot to get into. Aaron Rodgers stinking a joint up. 49ers stinking a joint up and losing to the Cards.
We got a lot to get into. If you want to call up, you want to be a part of the show, feel free. 855-212-4227.

That's 855-212-4227. NFL got started early yesterday morning in London. It ended early this morning on the East Coast. Well, out in Pittsburgh, I should say, at 1 a.m. Eastern. Long ass football day. Hopefully you sat around and enjoyed all of it.
If you had some money on it, I hope you walked away with some cash and some coin as well. We got one more game to finish up the night. About two hours from now, we'll have the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the New Orleans Saints. We'll talk about that game later on in the show.
And of course, we'll keep you up to date once it gets started. But rolling over from last night into today, and this is a team that's going nowhere. I don't got no confidence in the Steelers.
They're just a nice soap opera this year as to what happens between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. The Dallas Cowboys, we wait for the disappointment and what they'll look like as the season goes on. But this morning, this next team that I want to talk to you about, we know that they're not going anywhere and they are just ugly. It's because they don't have a roster.
It's because they've been good for about 20 years. Then Tom Brady was gone and then Bill Belichick is gone and now the team is starting over. I'm talking about the New England Patriots. Of course, Gerard Mayo is the new head coach taking over from Bill Belichick. They have a new quarterback in Drake May, but the issue is Drake May isn't playing yet. He's played mop-up duty, but Drake May is not the starter.
They didn't want to feed this rookie to the Wolves without having learned. I don't know, maybe Jacoby Brissette taking a little bit of a beating. And so unfortunately, the New England Patriots, at least their head coach, Gerard Mayo, he made news twice today. Or let me just say the Patriots made news twice today because Gerard Mayo had to discuss moving on potentially from Jacoby Brissette to Drake May. And then over the weekend, we learned about a horror story, horrible accusations that have been levied upon Jabril Peppers on the defensive side of the ball.
This man was arrested over the weekend, alleged domestic assault to his girlfriend, also drug possession, allegedly cocaine. And yes, these are allegations. They haven't been said. His lawyers say they have evidence to refute the claims and his arrest.
And I guess we'll see through the legal system. And so Gerard Mayo, earlier today, he spoke to the media. He was on WEEI and he had some comments on Jabril Peppers arrest.
Listen to this. He called me that morning. I knew what was going on in the NFL. We've informed the NFL what was going on and we're still gathering information.
So he's still on the team as far as you're aware? Yeah. I mean, I don't think anyone knows the facts or anything like that. I mean, it's a process.
Yeah. Legal process is a process. The NFL investigation system is a process. We just learned with Von Miller, it took them a year to suspend the guy and there were no charges pretty much formally filed against him. Now allegations of strangulation and all of just, it's terrible. I wasn't there. You weren't there.
The police. I don't know what the deal is. We'll find out sooner than later, but they just can't fire the guy. I'm sure that he probably won't play or maybe he will play. This is the NFL.
This is something that we have to pay attention to. The New England Patriots just signed him to a three year, $30 million contract. We'll see what happens with Jabril Peppers. Speaking of a guy who's actually playing, and this is what I think we all expected. Jacoby Percette is, he's average. Mediocre.
That might be giving him too much credit. Jacoby Percette cannot command an offense because he doesn't have nobody to work with. And so yesterday, and what was a pathetic matchup that I wasn't going to spend two seconds on outside of what's the score? The Dolphins beat the Patriots 15 to 10.
Sad. I mean, even in beating the Patriots, the Dolphins had a four field goals and a touchdown run. Not the most exciting of offenses.
Okay. On the New England side, Jacoby Percette only passed for 160 yards. Ramondre Stevenson. I don't know how the hell he got 89 yards on the ground knowing that they can't pass to save their life, but he had their only touchdown. The Patriots have the Texans up next and then they have the Jaguars. Do you want to throw Drake May into that system to just get smacked around by the Texans? Or do you want to wait until the Jags, who by the way, won their first game yesterday? The whole idea is to go out and protect Drake May.
I wouldn't be so fast to pull the trigger. Last week, we heard the words from their own website, their own video podcast, one of their own reporters who said that there's damn near a mutiny in the Patriots locker room that the players are waiting for Drake May to replace Jacoby Percette. That time might be coming sooner than later because last week Gerard Mayo said, Jacoby is our quarterback. And maybe he is just changing his mind. You know what?
Gerard Mayo, he was asked on WEEI, do you still believe Jacoby Percette is the best option for the Pats? Listen to this. Look, we haven't had our full staff meeting today. That's a conversation, not only at that spot, but all the spots, you know, how we get better as a football team. We're not playing well.
It's not a secret. And being the head coach of this team, like I have to accept all the responsibility for that. Well, not all of it. I guess it does fall.
When things get bad, it is. But everybody knows the Patriots suck. People knew that they were going to suck this year. And so what you need to do as the head coach right now is actually manage the guys who happen to be in the locker room. And so Gerard Mayo was asked about the guys in the locker room, the same players that last week, it was said that they were getting ready for a mutiny. Gerard Mayo was asked about the players.
How do they feel? This is what he said. I don't want to get into what players have told me and, you know, in my office or anything like that. But once again, we have to, we have to take a look at everything. Oh boy. Oh, okay. Uh huh.
Well, I got to look at everything. No longer Jacoby Percette is the guy. And the fact was for him to go out there and get thrown around instead of instead of the hot new rookie quarterback, Jacoby Percette has been sacked 17 times. The only NFL quarterback who's taken more of a beating than him. Well, Deshaun Watson and Deshaun Watson, man, a lot of question marks about that guy.
We'll get into that. And so Gerard Mayo, he was asked about Jacoby Percette and the punishment, the physical abuse that he's taken. And he acknowledged, yeah, our quarterback has been beat to shreds. But one thing I would say about Jacoby and I've said this time and time again, and even yesterday, he was hit quite a bit. Um, look, I admire his toughness and, you know, being able to get back up and continue to play the game. He made some good throws yesterday. He also missed some throws and that has, uh, shown up, you know, pretty, you know, all season. Now I'm saying that, you know, he's, he's been, he's been hammered back there in the pocket. And I think it's unfair to sit here and be too critical of them, but at the same time, recognizing to give this team the best chance to win, we have to be able to throw the ball.
And so, like I said earlier, you know, it's a solution based business and we got to find solutions as coaches. Don't, don't put him out there against Texas. Don't, don't do that. Put them out there against Jacksonville. If you want to push the button, the new England Patriots don't get a buy until right after the beginning of December. Do you want to wait that long?
That's not long enough. Drake May is going to get a chance to start sooner than later, but it's not going to be against the team that's going to the playoffs. Next up, they have Houston. Then they have Jacksonville, the New York Jets who are disaster by themselves. Tennessee isn't going anywhere. Chicago will probably just miss out on the post season as they'll probably pick up steam and get better as the year goes on. This is, this is tough.
And this is what we all knew. It was going to boil down to how long can you keep Jacoby Brissett on the field before the players ask for Drake May, but the way Jacoby Brissett is getting beat up, Drake May might get called into action just because of injury. And I'm not saying Jerrod Mayo is a torturous human being waiting for his quarterback to get hurt to insert the rookie, but you either got to do it relatively soon, like against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
You just got to wait until later in the year. Like at some point you do want him to play. You do want him to get some meaningful snaps, but you don't want them to take a beating. I'm sure ideally they would like to maybe get through halfway through the season.
Unfortunately for them, they won't play five games. This is a tough line. I would wait two more weeks before putting them out there or I'd put them out there, you know, after the Jets game. The fact is you put them out there too soon.
He's going to get his ass whooped the same way that Jacoby Brissett is. This is a matter of who you picking and who you choosing. 8-5-5, 2-1-2, 42-27. That's 8-5-5, 2-1-2, 42-27. Hickey, would you do it now or would you wait until later putting Drake May into the game as a starter?
I would wait till later, much, much later. Maybe even at all this year, just because their off-hights line is banged up. I mean, they were porous anyway, but now they're hurt and porous.
I'd be afraid of getting this guy killed and crushing his confidence. We've seen with other quarterbacks when they get hit a ton, you develop bad habits, you lose confidence and it kind of spirals down that sometimes it's irreversible. It's been bad, but also you said it before, it's been honestly, I mean, I would say with the Bengals win week one, better than expected, but like expectations weren't high. Nobody thought Jacoby Brissett was going to be any good or this Patriots team be competitive and winning games. This season has gone so far as you think. The offensive line stinks and I don't right now understand the thinking of putting a rookie quarterback behind that offensive line and thinking that's a good idea. Do you think Jacoby Brissett is going to last?
Because I think it's one of the two. The decision is going to be made for them or he's going to have to make it. I mean, he's a bigger guy at least. So he's takes, take, you know, take his hits before and he seems pretty durable, but at this rate, I mean, it does not seem sustainable that he can make it to Thanksgiving getting hit as much as he has, right? Damn, you got this guy having busted up ribs at Thanksgiving. I mean, I'm not rooting for it, but it sounds like a tough way to eat the turkey. Trying to sit down and eat and just everything is uncomfortable because his ribs are busted up. And you probably can't eat too much because if your stomach expands, probably pushes against your ribs, which makes it more painful. So now you got a portion control on Thanksgiving.
Who wants that? Oh yeah. You've had some broken ribs before? No, thankfully no. And I hopefully never will experience it, but I can only imagine that's what, you know, that's what it feels like, right?
Yeah. It's got a hurt laying down. I got a hurt sitting down. It has to hurt when you move. It has to hurt when you eat.
Oh man, golly. It sucks being a Patriot. I'll tell you this much though. I'm not rooting for anybody's pain, but when it comes to Patriots, the team, the organization, you can't sit on top forever.
It sucks for you. It's the JR sport reshow here with you on the infinity sports network. 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27.
That's 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. We're going to get into some more football. Definitely getting into Alabama and Tennessee and their losses and how they fell in the AP poll. But when we come back on the other side, speaking of young people and getting a chance, getting an opportunity, when are we going to see them? We have already seen LeBron James and LeBron James Jr. in a basketball game together.
They wasted no damn time. We're going to get into that, get into some more football. We got a lot to do. You're listening to the JR sport brief.
It's the JR sport reshow here with you on the infinity sports network. Right before we went to break, gave you some updates on a quarterback situation in New England in a legal situation, not good for Jabril preppers, arrested, alleged assault and drug possession. And then also on the field, things aren't good for the New England Patriots. They're trying to figure out when they want to go out there and throw Drake May to the wolves. And Jacoby Percette has been out there taking a beating on behalf of the New England Patriots. And there's going to come a point in time where, you know, at some point, right, Drake May has to go out there and play. We'll see when Gerard Mayo and the Patriots decide to push that button, you know, amongst all of the things that took place over the weekend. And we're going to get into Alabama and that upset loss and Tennessee's upset loss.
We'll talk about that at the top of the hour. But when you think about young players getting a chance to play over the weekend, probably the most famous player who did get a chance, did get an opportunity to play. Was a young man who just turned 20. He turned 20 yesterday. His name is LeBron James Junior.
Bronny James made his debut next to his dad. He's played in the Lakers first two preseason games. They played against Minnesota over the weekend or last Friday, played against the Phoenix Suns last night. Lakers lost to the Suns 118-114.
Doesn't matter. Everybody's playing 15 to 20 minutes, at least the Stars, at least. And so LeBron had 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists in 16 minutes. Yeah. Tell me LeBron James isn't healthy at this time of year.
Go ahead. Tell me. Anyway, he actually played on the court with his son. This was the first time in NBA history that you had a father and son on the court at the same time. Now, look, we all understand it's preseason. Games don't matter.
It doesn't matter. Bronny can't go out there and screw the game up. And I just told you how awesome of a preseason game LeBron had 19 points in 16 minutes.
Well, Bronny. Oh, not too good. He had two rebounds. Four turnovers.
And he missed a three that LeBron James basically kind of set a screen, handed him the ball, kind of boxed out form for him to get the shot. And Bronny missed it. Oh, yeah, no points. No points for Bronny James. Four turnovers, no points. Last Friday, Bronny James, he had two points, one rebound, one assist. He had three blocks.
Amazing. He had one turnover. He was one of six from the feet. He was one of six from the field. In two games, two preseason games against Hickey as substitutes, right?
I don't want to call them bums or scrubs, but substitutes. I like that term. Yeah. Yeah. You got to be respectful of the guys playing hard.
He didn't do anything. This doesn't look good for Bronny James, but he played with his dad. This was a historic moment. Wait until we actually have it in the regular season. I don't know when that's going to be, but LeBron James, he said, yeah, my son turned 20 to be on the court with him the same day. It was amazing.
Listen to this. For a father, I mean, it means everything. I mean, for someone who didn't have that, you know, growing up to be able to be able to have that influence on your kids and have the influence on your son, to be able to have moments with your son.
And then ultimately, you know, to be able to work with your son, I think that's one of the greatest things that a father could ever hope for or wish for. So it's pretty cool. Well, that's LeBron. LeBron has been in front of cameras, running his mouth and chatting for the better part of more than 20 years to 25 years just about.
Media savvy, media trained, the wordsmith. He's going to tell you things. He's going to talk and give his opinion.
No problem with it. LeBron James, his son is 20. You think he's going to have as many words to say about the situation as LeBron? Well, listen to what Bronny had to say about playing with his dad. And is he your dad? You're calling him dad? Is he your teammate? Can you believe it? Do you understand it?
Listen to this kid. I'm always thinking about, you know, that's my dad because that's literally my dad. So I just go out there and, you know, he's, when I'm playing, he's just my teammate. That's all I'm thinking at that point. Yeah, just, just teammates. They're just playing together, right? First time in NBA history playing basketball at the highest level in the preseason. Hey, LeBron, how did it feel to be on the court with your boy?
It's definitely a moment that, uh, that I would never forget. And, uh, you know, it's pretty cool. Okay. It's pretty cool.
All right. Hickey, is this, they're going to, he's going to play in a blowout, right? Like he's going to come on for a few minutes and then relieve LeBron so we can get the photo op and then they're going to send him to, uh, not Shanghai, but whatever the G league team can't send Bronny to Shanghai. What is the G league team?
What are they like in long beach or something like that? Something like that. Yeah. Yeah. Send them to the beach, send them to the beach. They're going to get it out the way. Don't you think? Can you like, if you're JJ Redican, you're JJ Redican, you're trying to earn your own respect, right?
Trying to win over this locker room and show you got some coaching chops for a team that I'm going to say at least is internally trying to compete for a championship. Can you, can you do that? Can you like, can you put them out there? Oh, so let's get the photo up. Let's make the history.
Let's hat, let them have their moment. Can you let that happen? We'll also the same time trying to be competitive.
I don't know if that's possible. Well, that's so they got four more preseason games, right? Right. They play again on Thursday against the bucks. They play golden state, Phoenix, golden state.
Okay. Whatever when the regular season starts for the Los Angeles Lakers, we know it's a big deal. They're going to open their season by hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves, Timberwolves expected to go to the playoffs. They got Phoenix, Phoenix Suns expected to go to the playoffs. They have Sacramento expected to compete for a playoff spot. They got Phoenix again.
They hit a road trip. They go to Phoenix. They play in Cleveland. Then they go to Toronto. Then they're in Detroit.
Then they're at Memphis. You would think that you want to do this at home, right? Wouldn't you think just in a general sense? Yes, I absolutely agree with that.
Okay. They're not going to be back home until November 8th. They start the season at home on October 22nd. Then they have two games, three games, excuse me, before they hit the road. And they're going to be gone for almost two weeks. And they're going to be playing some great teams. And so just based on the fact that you want to get it done at home.
And I think it's an easier path. You know, if you're taking on Minnesota, you got Phoenix, you got Sacramento. If they happen to be in a blowout or they're getting their asses kicked, you can put the two of them out there for a few minutes.
It doesn't have to be some hotly contested game, because let's be real. Bronny James, based on just what we've seen, forget college, but yes, college and what we've seen here in summer league and what we've seen in the preseason in two games. I think anybody is safe to say, like, he ain't ready to play in the NBA right now. But if you wait, what are you going to do? You're going to send him to the G League and then just bring him back later?
If you just do it now in like an ass-swipping game, then you could just say bye and see you later. He needs to develop and bring him back later. And then nobody has to talk about it again.
That would probably be the way that causes fewer distractions, because you're right, the longer he's on the end of the bench and the longer he doesn't play, the more of a story it is. I wonder, because LeBron is someone who's always talked about respecting the game. Ooh. Like, ouch.
I guess if it's a blowout, let's just say, right, they're losing at home by 30 points in the fourth quarter, five minutes ago. He comes in, Bronnie's in. I wonder if LeBron will, like, do you want the first time and maybe one of the only times, realistically, you play with your son, to come in that vein? I wonder. I don't know. Man.
Well, maybe, maybe the game is, like, maybe you're considering. Like, it's close now, but then you're like, okay, I got to sit LeBron and let me just throw his kid out there real fast. Like, realistically, the way Bronnie James has been playing, he's a mop up player, right? Absolutely. You're not throwing him out there. Hey, man, we need you to defend, I don't know, John Marant for three minutes. Not even. Like, he's at the end of the bench.
I don't, it's tricky. I just feel they have to do it, because whether or not he's at the end of the bench in Los Angeles or he's playing on the G League team, it's going to be a distraction until it happens. I mean, if they want to put him in cobwebs and look over the next four games, if he really stinks, I think they have justification to say, hey, Bronnie is going to start the season in the G League. But then, if I remember correctly, their agent, you know, Rich Paul basically was just like, hey, he needs to develop at the highest level.
So we're going to find out sooner than later. I'm glad you bring up the fact LeBron James has always talked about being a historian of the game and knowing the league. Well, this is a first. And let's be real.
Your son is here because of you. Nepotism exists. Nothing wrong with that. You're the first person to utilize it in this type of way in NBA history.
But to Hickey's point, what do you want that first experience to be? You know, it's not going to be a crunch time game in October, November against the Warriors. And I don't see, you know, J.J. Reddick go, hey, hey, Bronnie, come in, go defend Steph Curry.
I don't see that happening. Hickey, maybe they do it early, right? I don't know. But before halftime of a game, I don't know. We need you to foul that guy. Right.
I didn't think about that. Before halftime, it's tough. We need you to foul, right?
Or whatever. Five seconds left. The other team has a possession. I'm not being that much of a jerk. Give him give him three minutes.
Give Bronnie. Oh, wow. Three minutes of real court time will be almost, I don't know, five, five, eight, five to six minutes of real time. Right.
And if you think like you think he'll be sent down, like he'll get his moment whenever that may be, plays a little bit, makes the history, then you think he'll be sent down, possibly? Yeah. Like give him give him a game. Hi. You took a picture. You playing with your dad.
What do you do? Give him a game or two or three and then be like, all right, it's time to go. Well, that's it. If I said the over under of games, he's on the roster to begin the year, four and a half.
So what do you mean begin like the first month, two months? Will he be by the time that Lakers play the sixth game of the season? Will he be on the roster still? Yes, I think they'll take him on the road for the experience. I think so. OK. And maybe he plays mop up duty because let's be real, the Lakers on the road. Is LeBron playing all these games? Probably not. You know, so they might get their asses whooped. Throw Bronny out there.
I think he's going to be around for a little bit and I think he'll play with his dad sooner than later. It's the J.R. Sportbree show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. When we come back, we'll talk about some some teams that, well, they played over the weekend. They got smashed. They lost. Talking about Alabama and Tennessee. Don't move.
