855-212-4227. We've had a busy show. Week one of the NFL season is about to conclude. We have an active game right now going on in Santa Clara, California, home of the San Francisco 49ers. The New York Jets currently lead them. About two minutes has gone by here in the second quarter.
The New York Jets, they now lead seven to six. We'll give you an update as that game continues to roll along. Week one concluding, we've had a busy week one.
I told you we had a busy show. Thank you so much to Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times for joining us to talk Caleb Williams, the Chicago Bears. We talked about all the other rookie quarterbacks who got their starts yesterday. Also, many thanks to Joe Reedy of the Associated Press for coming through to talk to us about the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chargers got themselves a victory yesterday against the Las Vegas Raiders, 22 to 10. And so it's crazy. This is just how the NFL goes, not even a week into the season. And we already have so much news.
We have so many surprises. We're already dealing with some injuries. Now, Christian McCaffrey has been dealing with a calf injury pretty much all throughout training camp. Tonight, Christian McCaffrey is not in action as the New York Jets are taking on the San Francisco 49ers.
He was ruled out about 90 minutes to two hours before the game got underway. And so the New York Jets are currently leading seven to six. And the 49ers, if they get this victory, it's going to be without a Christian McCaffrey. Breece Hall with the only touchdown for the New York Jets, rushing in. And the 49ers, they're trying to go out and put some points on the board that have nothing to do with a field goal. Speaking of injuries, some other injuries of note.
How about this? Puka Nakua, he's going on injured reserve with an MCL spring. And so you have the Los Angeles Rams who lost the game yesterday in Detroit against the Lions. The Lions come back to beat them 26 to 20. The Rams are going to be without their second year star wide receiver, going to be relying on Cooper Cup going the rest of the way. Also, unfortunately, a little bit of an update on Tyreek Hill. We saw what the Miami Dolphins did against the Jaguars yesterday, 20 to 17.
They came out on top. Tyreek Hill had himself a big game on the field, 130 yards receiving, 80 yard reception that led to a touchdown. It's the most Tyreek Hill of games ever, except for the fact that he was arrested prior to the game for speeding and not wearing his seat belt. He was also temporarily detained in handcuffs for what he said. He had no idea because he obeyed all the rules. Kalaus Campbell even got handcuffed, I guess interfering or trying to stop. No one was arrested. Now the police have put one of the offers officers on leave.
And for a while we didn't know what the hell was going on until we got body cam footage released. Picky, you say initially Tyreek didn't want to roll down the window or cooperate, right? That is right.
Yes. That's what kind of started this whole thing. And then when he actually was taken out of the car, he didn't want to sit. And then you had another officer who kind of forced him to more than sit, like putting them onto the ground. Is that correct? Correct. And also forcibly removed him from the car initially as well. So apparently two wrongs not making a right.
That is correct. Well, we had the police union who certainly defended the officer saying that he was not cooperating, which apparently partially appears to be true. And then the footage also shows that one of the officers is, as he just said, and I described was a little too aggressive in this situation. And Tyreek Hill, I guess he can do a better job explaining because yesterday, before we got the release of this footage, Tyreek Hill had the answer as to why he was even handcuffed. I have no idea for real. No idea. No idea, man.
It's crazy. No idea. It wasn't disrespectful, you know, cause my mom didn't raise me that way. Didn't cuss and do none of that. So like I said, I'm still trying to figure it out, man. What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill?
Lord knows like what that guy or guys would have did. You feel me? And I was just making sure that, you know, I was doing, doing what my uncle always told me to do. Whenever you were in a situation like that, just listen, put your hands on the steering wheel, just listen. So got to be careful, man. Okay.
That doesn't appear to be the case. Now, we also heard from Mike McDaniel. He spoke today before the footage was released. And Mike McDaniel was rather emotional when talking about this. Also Kalaus Campbell, he was trying to diffuse the situation. This is someone who was an NFL Walter Payton man of the year.
Mike McDaniel, just listen. It's been hard for me not to find myself more upset the more I think about it. And that's because of, you know, my teammates and trying to put myself in that emotion or in that situation that they've described emotionally. And then knowing more than that, I think the, the thing that me up, honestly, to be quite frank, is knowing that I don't know exactly.
I don't know what that feels like. Okay. Now it appears that we have a response from Tyreek Hill after the body cam footage was released. He was on NBC Nightly News and Tyreek Hill said he did his best to comply with the officer who pulled him over. Quote, it was one of those situations where I was like, here you go, my ID, sir. And I let back up my window. He said, let it down. I let it down.
That's when it went from zero to 10. Other officers came in, just pulled me out. Hill said he was trying to open his door, but the officers simply didn't give him enough time to follow their orders. Quote, I was opening my door and as I was trying to get out, but I felt like they was wanting me to move fast. They felt like I was a threat and I don't see why they felt like I was a threat. That's what we got from Tyreek Hill. I feel like at the end of the day, if you roll up on somebody all hostile, knocking on their window and they already got their ID and they already got their ID ready for you, it's not like I said, you're not getting my ID.
You're not getting my ID. That being said, Hill did seem to understand why the union claimed while he was being uncooperative. I mean, you know, everybody has their own sides, their own version. I feel like they do that to kind of protect their officer, which is right.
You know, you got to have your teammates back. Okay. Hill said he was shocked. He was pulled over. He didn't feel he was breaking any laws.
He was surprised about that. Okay. All right.
Well, Hickey, there we go. It sounds like the same thing anyway. I don't know.
It's not like there's going to be an admittance from him. Uh, you know, typically I've been pulled over by the police. Like you just, just do it. I don't know. Was, was he taking forever? I got to sit down and watch the video and pull out my stopwatch. Uh, at least from, from when I was watching it, it wasn't, he, it was, it was not immediate.
Yeah. There was a few times when the officer was saying, roll down your window initially, then roll down your window again, after you rolled it up, after initially rolling it down and give him the ID rolled it right back up, rough, I'd say about 10 seconds between then asking him to roll it down and then not really complying and then sort of complying. And then they said, all right, screw it, get out of the car. It was definitely not immediate. And I would not say he was doing exactly what they asked as soon as they asked, you know, there's always a way to, uh, what's the word you can always quote unquote claim ignorance. I mean, what he's saying now is that, uh, I guess I wasn't moving fast enough for that.
I guess, I guess you weren't, I guess, I guess you weren't. I mean, the only good news is at least we have the video. So it's no longer, he said, he said, we can at least come to our own judgments. Yeah. It just, why, why, why do we have to have the footage to come out for him to say all of this?
He couldn't have said this yesterday. Not necessary. Right. Because, Oh, well, I don't know what's going to come out. So I'll just say, I don't know.
Like the, the easiest thing to do is just to always claim ignorance. Like I don't know why they didn't want, I don't know. I don't know why they dragged me out.
And that's basically what he said first. Well, obviously you do. You just didn't want to share it. So that, I don't know, that doesn't, that doesn't sit well with me because it's not, it's not me. But the fact is just to be honest, like, why are you, it's like, I'm gonna say nothing and say, I don't know.
I don't know until I have to prove myself a little bit more, which to me leads to a little bit of guilt. He was guilty by not moving fast enough and listening to the officers. The officers apparently appeared to be guilty by being too aggressive with him, whether it was that one officer or what have you, um, it's done like, and here's the thing it's not done because, and this might be a saving grace, whatever their media availability is between today, Monday in their game on Thursday, that might actually quote unquote, stop and slow down some of the story because everybody's always looking for the next story. But the fact is, okay, what happens next when Tyreek Hill is standing in front of the media? Is he going to be telling jokes? I don't think Mike McDaniel, you know, after his comments is going to be on the, the, the behind the microphone, you know, almost in tears. I don't know if that's going to be the case, but they're going to have to answer these questions.
I don't think they are going to go away. You know, how does Kaleis Campbell feel now after the fact, having seen the footage, it's just what Tyreek Hill is. It's unfortunately always something, and this goes back to college and domestic issues. I don't know. It's hard for me to look at a singular issue like today's and just go, well, why him? Why him? You want to tell me that there's never been an NFL player stopped on the, on the way to work? Why wasn't him in particular? And some NFL player driving a fancy, why him? It's just with him, there's apparently always something. I don't know.
I don't know. Hickey, the Dolphins are going to suck anyway this year. So there you have it. I'm just saying, he'll get his touchdowns. And he said he wanted to just, sometimes in life you got to laugh.
So that's why he did the celebration where he was in handcuffs. Sometimes you just have to laugh things away. But look, I got no expectations. My expectations from the Dolphins are the same thing every year.
Win a bunch of games and then lose in the postseason. That's just it, right? Yeah. At this point, I'd agree with that.
They are very much like the AFC version of the Cowboys. Oh, damn. Damn. Are we going to put them in that place though?
Really? Right now? I mean, I would, you, I mean, is that, you just, that's exactly what you said.
Win a bunch of games in the regular season and lose in the postseason. Like, are you scared of the Dolphins? No, no, I'm not.
Are you scared of the Cowboys come playoff time? No, I'm not. Nope. Nope. No, I'm not.
I'm not somebody I might be afraid of, afraid of. They just scored a touchdown. The San Francisco 49ers just scored a touchdown. These 49ers now lead the New York Jets 13 to 7. Deebo Samuel was able to punch the ball in on a two yard rush. Six minutes, almost about, about a little less than seven minutes left here in the first half of the New York Jets.
We'll get the ball back trying to answer and retake the lead. 13 to 7, the San Francisco 49ers lead the New York Jets. And Hickey, was there anything else here in this, this first week that caught your eye? I know that the Patriots certainly surprised everybody by knocking off of the Bengals, Jamar Chase.
Well, maybe he would have had a better standing if he didn't play yesterday, would have helped this cause, but he did. We talked a little bit about the Steelers winning ugly against the Falcons. What stood out to you this weekend? One of the last games, you just mentioned the Falcons offense.
I mean, my goodness. I mean, yeah, you couldn't, Steelers defense is very good and TJ is showing you he's one of the best players in the NFL, but you really couldn't outscore Justin Fields in the six field goals that the Steelers managed. That was the offensive line that was supposed to be well respected.
Just got absolutely mauled. Kirk never looked comfortable. Guys were not getting open.
Bijan Robinson was limited. It was, it was as bad as you could have asked for as a debut for what was supposed to be an exciting, maybe not a high flying per se, but an offense that's going to score points. Yeah, it was, it was a mediocre showing by the Falcons. And I don't know, I hope this is a growing pains with their new offensive coordinator, Zach Robinson, they brought him over from the Los Angeles Rams where he obviously coach Raheem Morris has experience, but I don't want, it is, I mean, yesterday's showing was the same old Falcons. It doesn't matter who the head coach was, who the offensive coordinator was, you know, looking at Kirk Cousins, you know, throwing that ball around some of those interceptions, you just have to kind of scratch your head. It was just, it was ugly.
It was ugly to say the least. And so the Falcons really disappointed. There was a lot of energy here in the city, you know, over the past several days, over the past several weeks, once the confusion kind of tampered down as to why they decided to draft a quarterback in Michael Pennix Jr. after they paid all this money to Kirk Cousins, after all that subsided, people were ready for the season. And you think about the players that they added on, especially on the defense where you got, Oh my God, we have Matthew Judon. Oh my God, we gave AJ Terrell a new contract.
Oh, we signed Justin Simmons. There was an expectation that the defense did their job, you know, just a bunch of field goals, good. But when the offense can't generate anything worth a damn, what the hell else do you want the defense to do?
Pretty pathetic. The Falcons, the Steelers, we can expect this from them every game to go out there and win and be ugly. The Falcons, it's not going to get any easier. They got the Eagles next.
They have to score points if they want to do anything. 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227. We're going to take a break. When we come back, I'll give you another update on these New York Jets in the Bay Area against these 49ers.
We'll tell you what's going on there. Also, you should know this. You need to thank O'Reilly Auto Parts for all of your car care needs. You get guaranteed low prices and excellent customer service from the professional parts people at O'Reilly Auto Parts.
The phone lines are open if you want to give me a holler. And you know what? I want to speak about something that actually is spectacular. We might see something in sports that we have never seen before.
I'll tell you what it is on the other side. You're locked into the JR Sport Brief Show on the Infinity Sports Network. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief. It's the JR Sport Brief Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. San Francisco leading the Jets 13-7. New York Jets trying to put some points on the board here before they head into halftime. No Christian McCaffrey not playing tonight due to his calf injury. He's the Offensive Player of the Year last season. And at this point, man, you just want this guy healthy for the postseason, right?
Have to deal with part of this calf issue going back to last season. I'm going to get to some history that might be made in Major League Baseball. I'll get to that in a second. We do have some callers here who are on the line. They're waiting patiently. 855-212-4227. Let's go and hit the lines. Let's get to Matt calling from Connecticut. You're on the JR Sport Brief Show. What's up, Matt?
Hey, JR. Hey, how are you? Good, man. I just had to step in because on the last episode you had there a couple of minutes ago, I heard you come out with Tyree Kill. Now, I'm a Giants fan.
I heard you come out with Tyree Kill right off the rip. You said he got arrested. Then you came back with his partner that stepped in and said they both got detained. So which one is it? You're going to put him on the spotlight for getting arrested or is it detained?
Because that's a big difference. Well, we've been talking about this for the past four hours. So forgive me.
No, no, no. Not four hours since you mentioned that. I've been... No, well, Matt, I'm sure. Can I answer? Go ahead, JR. What do you got to say about him?
Oh, my God. Matt, we've been talking about this for the past four hours. We have made it very clear that he was detained, OK? Now, if I have come out and said he was arrested, I'm not doubting that at all. But I think any time if I have said that, I quickly said that he was detained in a matter of correcting myself because I, like everybody else, am not perfect. Does that make sense, Matt?
What? What makes sense? OK. OK. Hickey, did I not make sense?
I feel like I did. I think that was a guy looking for a fight. For whatever reason, you gave him an explanation. He was not clearly ready for that.
Thus, speechless. What am I supposed to do? I'm supposed to say, oh, no, I never said he got arrested. Even if I did say he got arrested, I'm sure I said he got detained. And as I said, we've been talking about this since this has actually been a developing story since we've been on the air. The body cam footage was released after we got off the air. We were able to detail with you what took place yesterday. And I think anyone who's listened would be very clear that that he was detained.
And even if I did make a mistake and say he was arrested, I think as even he just said, I corrected myself after the fact. 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227. Lee is here from Cincinnati. You're on the J.R. Sportby show. What's up, Lee? Thank you so much for taking my call, dear. I'm sorry.
I'm still laughing about that last call. You know, it didn't seem like you could understand what you're asking him. It was pretty simple. He said I talked about it off the rip. I actually talked about maybe three or four other things, even in this hour before I brought up Tyree Killam last break. But what do I know? I just say things, Lee.
What's up? Oh, well, all I have to say is this. I got to tell you how spot on I think he was, you know, saying that. And I firmly believe that. I've always said that the Dolphins are the AFC version of the Dallas Cowboys. Let's face it, they got a great quarterback. They got a great receiver. You know, they got good playmakers. But what do the Dolphins need to do to take the next step in your opinion? That's my question.
No, Lee, nothing. I mean, as they're currently constructed. Do you also I mean, let's start off on the defense. I feel like the defense is pretty much slapped together with retreat cornerbacks from from other teams.
You're missing Christian Wilkins, who is now a member of the Las Vegas Raiders. And then when you look at the offense, the offense is built for one thing, and that's for speed. Like, nobody's going to take a look at the Miami's Dolphins offense unless you're going to look at a chain to just kind of consistently pound it, you know, through the line of scrimmage. That's not what they're built for.
They're built to utilize to a tongue of Lois accuracy to just throw the ball to Hill or Waddle and just say, hey, slant, go. And that's it. And that's not going to work. I don't think that's going to work on a consistent basis. You've got to be able to beat people up and grind out. The Dolphins aren't built for that.
There we go. That's what I was asking, because let's face it, they're going to win a lot of games in the NFL. You know that it's because speed tops everything until you get to the last part. Like you said, it takes strength.
It takes guys who can just beat you down. And the Dolphins don't have that. That's what I've always been saying. And like I was telling Ryan, I got kicked out of a Dolphins club that I started because I said just about the same thing that he said.
Wait, wait, wait, wait. How do you get, this is like a Facebook group. Well, no, it's not a Facebook group. I was all with my friends.
They call pins wins. Okay. Cause I'm from Florida and I started it, but you know, I said the dolphins, I said, I said they could win great during the season, but they cannot win in the postseason. They're just like the Dallas Cowboys.
And my own friends kicked me out of my group because I said that. Well, you, you, you're being honest. You posed the question to me and I'm like, Hey, listen, man, this, the only thing changing the dolphins up is this personnel group.
And the fact that to a Tonga below it just got this, this new contract, he ain't going nowhere no time soon. Come on. So they're, they're stuck, man.
I don't know what's going to change unless they, they find some, uh, you know, the next coming of, of Derrick Henry, that's going to change how the offense runs. That's it. What I'll tell you right now, the way you ran last week, just, just go ahead and just get Joe Mixon. Come over there. Come on, please. I think you do better than anybody else.
I think there's a, I think there's another team missing, uh, Joe Mixon right now, missing him real bad. Hey Lee, thank you for calling from Cincinnati, man. Appreciate you. Thanks man.
No problem. That's also understated. Uh, you know, what's going on with the Cincinnati bangles knowing that, that, that doesn't get talked about enough. There's so much conversation around who gets a contract, who doesn't get a contract out in Cincinnati right now. Uh, just a more than disappointing loss that they just took, especially going out there and losing to a team that everybody expects to get smacked around in the new England Patriots.
16 to 10 was a final score as the pats went over the bangles. Jamar chase. I thought this would be the case. He decided to suit up, uh, yesterday and he's a good, he's a good dude. Uh, his family, they're good people. I'm saying that cause I know them. It's personal experience.
I've met them, I should say, hung out with them a little bit and he went out there. Jamar chase had six receptions, 62 yards receiving and he was the guy, nobody else. T Higgins dealing with a hamstring. Uh, the offense just was, was more than pedestrian. It was just taking a slow walk through the park.
The bangles had no juice. Zach Moss was the leading rusher at 44 yards, uh, way off from, from Joe Mixon. And so, uh, people take a look at what's going on in Houston and Stefan Diggs gets a lot of the attention as you would, especially how he left Buffalo. A lot of the words he said on his way out of Buffalo, he is a big deal for the Houston Texans as well.
Hickey, what were your thoughts? I know they, your Colts were on the other side of that loss yesterday, but what were your impressions about the Texans? I was very impressed with their physicality, their offensive line. Like they were one of the worst rushing offenses in all the NFL last year. And like you said, led by Joe Mixon, I mean, they just ran all over the Colts. It was like over five yards of carry where they needed to. And the Colts knew they're running, still couldn't stop them. Like now, all of a sudden, if you give CJ Stroud a running game that defenses have to worry about with Diggs, with Nico Collins, with Tank Dell, like watch out.
There's, that's going to be a really, really tough team to beat. And defensively, I mean, they held Jonathan Taylor in, uh, in check 40 rushing yards. So the defensive and offensive lines for, uh, for the Texans reasons why I was not yet ready to put them in that Super Bowl conversation yet, they really showed out and impressed in week one. Yeah, I mean, Joe Mixon, 159 yards on the ground. I think Cincinnati would have loved to have, uh, had him out there running yesterday, 213 yards rushing flattened period against the Colts.
And then Anthony Richardson, Hickey, your thoughts? He made it through a game, thank God. He made it through a game. He had two dazzling throws, which is what he does. Um, it's the layups, you know, it's the short throws. It's the third down, gotta have it. It's making a few reads when you need to, you know, move the ball to keep the drive going. He's still a rookie.
Uh, there's definitely still some flaws in the game. Um, and you, you hope that they are, uh, smoothed out sooner rather than later, but kind of a little bit of an all or nothing sort of game there where either the Colts went three and out or they got a highlight, real touchdown, not much in between. When does someone stop being a rookie? When they actually play the games? Do you have to play the games or sitting around and rehabbing for a year?
At what point is the guy no longer a rookie? I think you got to play the games. Got to play. Okay. Yeah. Sitting on the bench, listening to the play calls, being in the meetings is nice, but until you actually get the real game experience, I think that's when you can finally say, okay, the rookie, the rookie-ness, if you want to use it, rookie-ness is gone. All right.
The rookie-ness. Okay. Making up words now. That's what we do.
Well, Hey, look, man, makeup, makeup words is, is fine by me. Let's see if, uh, what the hell is going on with this football game? Oh boy.
Oh boy. Are they gonna, they're going to call this a no score, right? And they call that a score. I don't know. Nah, no score.
Anyway, they're going to spend either that they're going to spend five days trying to figure this out. This is how the NFL goes. It's the JR sport reshow here with you on the infinity sports network. We're going to take a break. When we come back on the other side, we want to talk about someone getting ready to make history in major league baseball. I'm going to share with you a few things that took place this day in sports history. You're listening to the JR sport brief. I guess if you look at the bright side of anything going on with the New York Jets right now, Aaron Rodgers has been able to make it through a first half of the game.
He's completed seven of 11 passes. Not exciting for 64 yards. The New York Jets offense looking for some work.
Breeze Hall with 25 yards on the ground. And with a touchdown, not a lot else to show for the New York Jets. Jordan Mason in for the injured and out Christian McCaffrey, a 75 excuse me, 74 yards rushing on the ground.
Christian McCaffrey inactive, a surprise inactive coming off of that calf issue calf slash Achilles issue that really it's been bothering him dating back to last year. So I thought that the 49ers would win this game. I still believe so. If the New York Jets can come through with a surprise turnaround victory, good for them. Good for them. We'll see what happens as the game goes on. Hickey, you see the Jets bouncing back? You got the 49ers here. No, I think the 49ers win. Up by nine at half. They're sharp. They're playing well. I think they finish this game off.
Okay. And right now we got a little bit of a halftime show. Is that Vernon Davis they're putting in the Hall of Fame? Look like Vernon Davis.
I saw Frank Gore standing off to the side. Wow. Okay. All right. Damn.
Tom, Tom, Tom, Tom flies. Vernon Davis. The last time he played was what you say four years ago.
It was that really? I was going to say like longer. Let's see. Six, eight.
I mean, he don't play for a while, so you're probably right. It's a lot sooner than I would run. Twenty nineteen was his last year with Washington. Okay.
On paper here. Twenty nineteen. So what was that? Five years ago. Okay. That's that's about right.
Yep. Twenty nineteen. Four games played with Washington. One hundred and twenty three yards and a touchdown. And so now he goes into the 49ers Hall of Fame. Good for Vernon Davis.
Good. Good for him. Also, speaking of the Hall of Fame, Shohei Ohtani continues to just shift the record books. He might be the first fifty fifty player in baseball history, which is is nuts to think about all throughout history.
We've only had six count of six players who've ever entered into the 40 40 club. And Shohei Ohtani is about to make his own exclusive club because why not else? He's the most versatile baseball player of all time. The only thing he does not do is play defense.
And why would he? I guess when you're a pitcher, unless they want to put him in the outfield, but they don't want him to get hurt anyway. Yesterday, they went out there or he went out there and helped beat Cleveland four to nothing.
The Dodgers did. He hit a home run. This was his forty sixth of the season.
Take a listen to this clip on this one. Oh, oh, he's off right field hooking toward the pole. It's fair and gone. Forty six and forty six for Shohei Ohtani in a two nothing Dodger league. Man, he is he he now has forty six home runs, forty six stolen bases. There are about nineteen twenty Dodger games left. There'll be an action, a matter of fact, in about twenty five, thirty minutes from now hosting the Cubs. Ohtani is going to get into this fifty fifty club. He hasn't stolen a base, I want to say, in about a week. Last time he did that, he stole three bases in the game. I think he's he has you have to go for it.
You have to pick. He's going to go for it. He's going to get it, isn't he? Oh, he's going to get it. And like with how effortless it's been like, I don't think he has to even like try.
No, you got to try. He hasn't stolen the base in like a week. Well, I guess he's too busy hitting home runs.
That's the problem. We're hitting doubles. You got singles and walks, right?
You're right. You can't you can't steal a base if you're knocking them over the wall. And Shohei Ohtani just making making life difficult for himself in the process. No doubt that he's winning the National League MVP.
I know that there's a lot of conversation, especially in New York. You know, you think about, oh, man, what's the shortstop? So I'm drawing a blank. Francisco Lindor, the nine game winning streak when it was actually going on. You got to give Lindor the MVP because he also plays defense. He plays every day. No, that's nice. That's nice to say the award is all time. They probably already have it printed out and everything, just waiting for his address and for the season to end. Do you believe that that Lindor, he deserves credit, but he ain't getting on MVP?
What are your thoughts? I mean, he does impact the game in a way that Shohei can't because he doesn't play the field. I think there is a real thing to argue here that if Shohei Ohtani goes 0 for 4, he has no chance to impact the game whatsoever for a Dodgers win. If Francisco Lindor goes 0 for 4, he can make and has made plenty of plays defensively that helps the Mets win a game.
What Shohei is doing is incredible. And this, like you said, this would be a historic benchmark he would clear. But I think when you talk about most valuable player, who has the most value to their team with Lindor's turnaround, this Mets turnaround as well that coincide at the same time and what he brings from an offensive and defensive perspective. No Homerism here.
Lindor MVP. OK. All right. All right. Do you think if the Mets make the playoffs, do you think he's getting this MVP award? Come on.
Realistically, I think he's realistically getting it. Probably. Yes. There you go. This is I don't dispute the fact that, look, if Lindor wasn't on the team, they'd be they'd be garbage right now. OK, but if Ohtani wasn't there, the Dodgers probably still be competitive. But you cannot have a guy with a 50-50 season. They're going to give him the award. That's just flat period.
I don't need to know about anything else anybody else is doing. 50-50? Jay-Z? I know the club is closed down.
He may have to open up a new one 50-50 club. Anyway, let's go back in time. It's Monday, September 9th. Let's take a look at a few things that took place this day in sports history. It's time for this day in sports history. You see, back in those days we had radio and you couldn't see anything.
It was primitive and lousy and we liked it. On the JR Sport Brief Show. I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass. September 9th, 1965. Sandy Koufax. This man through his first and only perfect game. This happened to be the sixth perfect game in modern Major League Baseball history. Let's go back to 1965. Who's on the call?
The great Vince Scully on the Dodgers radio network. Two and two to Harvey Keene. One strike away.
Sandy into his wind-up. Here's the pitch. Swung out and missed the perfect game. On the scoreboard in right field, it is 9 46 p.m. in the City of the Angels, Los Angeles, California.
And a crowd of 29,139. Just sitting in to see the only pitcher in baseball history to hurl four no-hit no-run games. He has done it four straight years and now he capped it on his fourth no-hitter. He made it a perfect game. 24 perfect games in history all time. That was the sixth in 1965. Domingo Herman had one for the Yankees last year. Let's go back in time.
September 9th, 1992. Robin Yount went out and got his 3,000 hit. One legend to another. That was Bob Euchre dropping the news on the Brewers radio network. Unfortunately, they went out there. Cleveland beat Milwaukee five to four.
Not what you want. Hey, let's keep it moving. September 9th. This is more recent.
You might recall this one. 2018, the Browns didn't know how to win a football game and for them, you couldn't even say that they lost this one. At this point, they were on a 17-game losing streak and they tied with the Steelers in overtime.
21 to 21. Nobody could score. This was the first tie in NFL week one history since 1971. We're talking about field goals and miss field goals and ugly.
Just take a listen. These are the highlights or lowlights from week one. Browns, Steelers tie courtesy of CBS. Taylor looking for the end zone.
It is putt. Touchdown Josh Gordon. Great placement by Tyrod Taylor.
Putting it to the outside. I wasn't sure Gordon was going to be able to come up with this thing, but not only did he catch it, but gets his feet down. Boswell from 42. He missed it.
And that'll do it. Cleveland with its first tie since 1989 against Kansas City. Pittsburgh's first tie since 2002 against Atlanta.
How you tie in the first game of the regular season? Ben Roethlisberger started for the Steelers. Tyrod Taylor started for the Browns. Ben Roethlisberger had three interceptions.
He had three INTs. After the game, Ben Roethlisberger said, man, it feels like if you didn't win, that you lost. Sounds appropriate. That sounds about right.
Sounds about right. Anyway, speaking of time, I think my time here is basically done for this afternoon and for this evening. We got the final game in week one of this NFL season is pretty much coming down to a wrap right now. The San Francisco 49ers are leading the New York Jets 16 to 7 just underway here in the third quarter in the second half. And so I'm sure we'll have plenty to discuss tomorrow as it relates to the New York Jets and the 49ers. Hopefully we get an update on Christian McCaffrey.
Is he only going to be out for this game? New York Jets know Hassan Redick. Thank you so much to Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times for joining us to talk about Caleb Williams and Joe Reedy of the Associated Press for joining us to talk about the Los Angeles Chargers. The JR Sport Reshow here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. It's a wrap. We'll be back with you tomorrow at 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific.
