It is the JR Sport Brief Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Much love and many thanks to everybody tuned in and locked in all over North America. Thank you to our super producer and host, Ryan Hickey. Without Hickey, there's no show, okay? First of all, there's no show without you too.
Because if you ain't listening, none of us are here. This is when I get started every single weekday at 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific. So it doesn't matter what coast.
It doesn't matter what country. I'm glad that you are here on the Infinity Sports Network. You can always listen live on your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate. You can always tune in on the free Odyssey app, Sirius XM Channel 158. A smart speaker if you have one.
And if you have one, ask the speaker to play the Infinity Sports Network. We got a lot to do. Week one of the NFL season is almost in the books. Had a full slate of action yesterday. Got going on Thursday in Kansas City. Jetted on down to Brazil on Friday night. Had a bunch of games last night. Finished up in Detroit.
And today we go down to San Francisco as the New York Jets and the 49ers end week one of the NFL season. Even had a couple of, well, we had one guy who got paid. His name is Dak Prescott. We had another guy who did not get paid. And yeah, he still showed up to work. His name is Jamar Chase.
Two years left on his deal, by the way. Saw some more familiar things. Saw a quarterback in Buffalo and Josh Allen come down with an injury, but his hand is okay. He'll play Thursday night football against the Miami Dolphins. We saw Tyreek Hill. This man was in handcuffs on his way to the stadium in Miami against the Jacksonville Jaguars. And then we saw him score a touchdown into a handcuffs celebration.
Okay, that was an odd site. Tom Brady made his debut as an announcer. We had a few rookie quarterbacks make their debuts. Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix and Caleb Williams.
There's just a lot that we're going to get into. A matter of fact, speaking of quarterbacks making their debuts, Patrick Finley from the Chicago Sun-Times is going to join us next hour to talk about what we saw or what we did not see from Caleb Williams yesterday. The Chicago Bears, fortunate enough for them, they were able to still walk away with a victory against the Titans, despite Caleb not necessarily having the best showing. Now Bo Nix, Jayden Daniels, we'll get a little bit deeper into that. Speaking of debuts, we had an NFL head coach, someone who's taken a team to the Super Bowl. He came back to the NFL yesterday.
I don't know if you want to consider it a debut again, debut number two. Jim Harbaugh is back in the NFL. And the Chargers, well, I mean, for one game, they look good. I mean, they walked away with a victory against the Raiders. What the hell else can you say?
You can't knock them out too much. So we'll have that chat. Joe Reedy is going to join us from the Associated Press later in the show to talk about Harbaugh's debut with the Chargers and what this means for Herbert in that run game. Dobbins look good. He's like my ACL, don't worry about it.
Everything is smooth. If you want to talk to us, it's simple. We got a phone number and it works. 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. You can find me all over the place on the internet as well. I am at JR Sport Brief. If you follow me at JR Sport Brief, you would have known about the majority of the things that we will discuss this show.
Super producer and host Ryan Hickey. How you doing, man? You good? I am good, JR. Great to have football back.
I definitely would be doing a lot better if, you know, the Colts could win yesterday and maybe Anthony Richardson hits one or two guys that are open. But otherwise, hey, good to be back here. Good to be on a Monday, NFL reaction Monday. These are always some of the most, you know, the best shows of the year. So good to be back.
Oh, absolutely. And, you know, I mean, even if I got to take a look at Saturday, I mean, Colorado, not not good. Not good. Notre Dame, not not good as well. Your team, Penn State, almost not good.
Almost so not good that I think it wasn't good. Hey, surviving events. That's that's all that matters as long as you know. Okay. All right.
But not Notre Dame. So that's all that matters. Oh, wow. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We're going to get into that. We had a lot of disappointments over the weekend. And prepare yourselves, depending on what team you root for and where you live, you're going to have so many more disappointments as the year goes on. Hello to the Bengals, maybe, possibly.
I know it's one game, but y'all suck, too. Anyway, let's start off with someone who didn't finish the weekend disappointed. Now, I am no Oracle. I am not Miss Cleo. I don't have a magic ball. I cannot predict the future.
But I said weeks ago. That Dak Prescott, I felt that he was going to get his deal and it was going to be announced only a few hours before game time. Now, that's exactly what the hell happened, because the Dallas Cowboys will look foolish to let this man go through an entire season and basically become a free agent because the price more than likely would do nothing but go up.
This is this is for both sides. They needed to get the deal done and they did. And in the most Dallas Cowboys way possible, the Cowboys announced this. Dak Prescott, four years, 240 million dollars. He's the highest paid everything of all time.
Yeah, go ahead. Check a box, quarterback, NFL player, what have you. He's making a 60 million dollars annually. All those other quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence, who sucked yesterday, by the way, he's making 55.
Dak has now graduated into 60. And this is before the Cowboys went out there and smashed those Browns 33 to 17. And by the way, that game sucked. OK, by the time we got halfway through that game, I was checking in. I was checking out. I said, this is crap. I'm not sitting around watching this.
This is nothing. Dak Prescott, the man threw for 179 yards and a touchdown because they didn't need to do anything else. That defense was destroying Deshaun Watson.
And that's another story for another day. That guy stinks, too. Deshaun Watson sacked six times, two interceptions. Looks like a shell of himself. I don't know if it's the shoulder injury.
I don't know if it's the time away with the legal issues. This guy's dealt with some things. His dad passed away once on Friday.
Friend passed away on Saturday. Today, Hickey, did you see a new lawsuit was filed dating back to 2020? Did you see that? I did, yes.
And I read some details. It is not pretty. Oh, my goodness. What happens to Deshaun? Should he just lock himself in a house tomorrow? Should he come outside? That'd be wise. Turn off the phone, maybe turn off the TV, turn off the radio, unless it's us, of course.
And, yeah, kind of stay to yourself for a while. Yeah, this is not... I thought yesterday couldn't get worse.
The weekend was just bad. Only opposite, Dak Prescott got paid. He don't have those issues.
All he has to worry about is his foot and his ankle getting sore every now and then. Dak, he actually said, he's like, listen, I was not worried about my contract and whether or not we were going to get it done or not. Whether it got done today, or not, wasn't going to change the way, wasn't going to affect me, honestly. I've told you guys before, I don't necessarily play, I don't play for the money.
I think when you focus and you control what you can control, things like that just happen. So, yeah, I found out probably an hour I get, or, I mean, honestly, probably 20 minutes before was, you know what I mean, publicized to everybody else. Okay. Now, how does Jerry Jones feel about this? We know that Dak Prescott, he told us, he's like, man, I don't listen to what Jerry Jones says in the media. I've learned to tune out Jerry Jones a long time ago. Well, Jerry, he said, I want this man to be the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, as long as he can be alive.
The figure is, what it means is a big commitment to the next five years, to our future, if you will. There's a lot of me that thinks I know Dak is our quarterback for the rest of my time. So, and that's not just limited to the terms of this contract either, but I've got a lot of confidence in him. He's got a lot of bringing so much to the table.
Okay. All right, Jerry, as long as you're alive and he's alive and can play football, you want to see him as quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. And for someone who was in the MVP conversation, why the hell not? I just don't know if the Dallas Cowboys have enough talent surrounding Dak Prescott to take that next leap. But for yesterday, everything is all good in Cowboysville. Even Mike McCarthy, this is the guy playing it out on the string. Mike McCarthy is the Dallas Cowboys head coach who does not have an extension.
Jerry Jones is kind of puppeting him around to see what happens throughout the course of this year. Mike McCarthy after week one, at least he was in a good mood. Excellent win, especially going on the road, coming up here with a great football environment.
So, you felt good about your prep coming into it. I thought we started the first half. I thought we played well, did little things. Second half was sloppy. So good win.
Anytime you win by three scores and you have a lot to correct. All right. All right. Enough of those guys.
Okay. Enough of the winners. We heard enough of the Dallas Cowboys.
This is what we get at the beginning of every year, right? Dallas Cowboys will go 12 and five. Dak Prescott is going to make more money than anybody on planet earth. And by the time they get to the post season, they'll just stink. Dallas Cowboys have New Orleans next. New Orleans also happy with a victory. Let's see how many more of those they have.
Not a lot. The Browns? Well, let's just say, uh, I said this, Watson stunk. The team stunk. The offensive line stunk.
Watson sacks six times. He was shell shocked. Even when there was nobody in his face, he was out there missing guys. I don't know if he's rusty. I don't know if the shoulder's rusty.
I'm sure he's preoccupied with all of the other issues that are going on in his life. Uh, just it's bad for Deshaun Watson. He had the option yesterday to not play after the passing of his dad and his friend. And he decided to go play needed a little bit of a distraction. He said, coach kept Kevin Stefanski though.
He was very clear. Offensive line sucked. Yeah, he got hit way too often. Uh, that's, that's, uh, we can't let that happen to, to him. He, he fought like crazy and listen, the football team fought like crazy, uh, to the end.
Uh, but bottom line is we have to protect our quarterback better than that. Oh yeah. The guy who broke his shoulder, they were booing out there yesterday. Come on.
Uh, I saw comments. People are asking for Jamis Winston. Wow. You don't know what you get with Jamis. You might get a three touchdown, one interception game. You might get three interceptions.
Damn. Miles Garrett. This guy isn't bad at anything on the football field, is he?
Defensive player of the year at home, home opener against the Cowboys. We might not have taken things back to when the Browns were just in paper bags in the stands, right? All the fans were in paper bags. Miles Garrett said, we stunk so bad. The fans should have booed us. They have the right to tell us however they feel. Cause I mean, if we're playing, if we're not playing well, they have the right to boo. If we're kicking ass, they got the right to cheer.
It's their privilege. They come in, you know, they, they, uh, you know, paid us to see us do well and we didn't. And we got to put on better performance if we expect them to go out there and support them, support us with in full force. So we've got to be better. And that's, that's all on us. The Browns, they're signing Caderius Tony to the practice squad.
Okay. Caderius Tony is going to help out the offense. If he can actually catch the football and good luck on that one. Let's hear from Deshaun Watson. He talked about after getting spanked by the Cowboys yesterday.
Well, he's not worried about a thing. Cause it's 17 more weeks. We got, uh, 16, I want to say 16 more opportunities.
It's the NFL. Anything happened. I started, uh, 0-4 in 2018. We won 11 straight, you know, so it's one game at a time. You take your one week at a time, you, you get ready. Regardless if you win or you lose, you got to scratch it out. I'm going to get ready for the next week. So anything can happen.
Anything is possible. We got to watch this tape. You know, it was, it was, it wasn't a pretty day for us. And, you know, we got to own it as a, as a whole, um, especially me as the leader of this team and leader of his, of his offense, um, correct those mistakes, get back on the same page and get ready for Jacksonville. Oh, when Deshaun Watson said, he's the leader of the team and the offense. Oh man.
I mean, I get it. It's, it's news, the new lawsuit that he got. I thought we were done with this by the way, but there's just another one.
I guess when you have that many accusations, unfortunately, they're just going to keep on rolling in whether they happen to be true or not. Some quarterbacks walked away last night with a good day. Some had a bad one. You can go ahead and file Deshaun Watson under having a bad, bad day. Hopefully for him, things can turn around.
It's just a terrible week for him, uh, personally and professionally. Congratulations to Dak Prescott getting that money, $60 million per year. He's making major, major bank, and we're just getting started. It's the JR sport brief show here with you on the infinity sports network.
We're going to take a break. When we come back on the other side, we're going to talk about two quarterbacks, one who was also the leader of the team, two quarterbacks, one who was also making major money, had a big win last night, and then another quarterback. He will make more money as a broadcaster than he did playing in the NFL.
I think you know who it is. We're going to talk about more quarterbacks making more money. We're going to get into Tyreek Hills situation. Of course, we're going to talk about tonight's Monday night football game between the New York jets and the San Francisco 49ers. Patrick Finley is going to join us from the Chicago sun times. We're also going to be joined by Joe Reedy from the associated press to talk all things chargers. We're going to talk about some of those upsets and scary defeats that we witnessed on Saturday on the college football landscape.
We have a whole lot more to do. Congratulations. It's Monday, September 9th, you've made it and continue to make it through. You're locked into the JR sport brief show on the infinity sports network. You're listening to the JR sport brief. It's the JR sport brief show here with you on the infinity sports network. 8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27.
That's 8 5 5 2 1 2 of 42 27. Amongst all of the games that we had yesterday and had, let's just say over opening week of the NFL, pretty wild to see the game in Brazil on Friday. Every time Saquon Barkley did something amazing or scored, I said to myself, Giants fans, some of them have to be kicking themselves, right?
Got to be a little bit jealous of what took place. I know every time on Thursday, you know, Xavier Worthy went out there and scored a touchdown. I'm like, Bills are kicking themselves. You know, here in Atlanta, Georgia, watching the Falcons lose to the Steelers in the most Steelers way possible, the six field goals.
I just have to laugh. Like we had a lot of those games yesterday and over the weekend. Saints smashing the Panthers, the Giants getting destroyed by the Vikings at burning Daniel Jones jerseys outside of the stadium.
We'll get into that. It's just a wild week to open up the season. But Monday, or excuse me, Sunday night football, today's Monday. We saw the conclusion of the Lions and the Rams. Lions almost choked the game away. Rams ended up taking the lead. The Lions came back to tie the game. Lions ultimately win it on a rushing touchdown in overtime. A matter of fact, let's listen to that game winning score as David Montgomery punches the ball in from a one yard line to give the Lions a 26 to 20 victory. This is from the Lions Radio Network.
Gough takes the snap, turns, gives the Montgomery right side. This game is over. Pack it up, boys.
We're going home. They come from behind in the final minute and tie it. They take the ball in overtime and march 70 yards down the field and win it. You know, every time that the Lions are on a football field, for whatever reason, everything is exciting with the Lions. There's never no clear cut victory or clear cut win. Everything with the Lions is a little bit up.
It's a little bit of down, a little bit of high, a little bit of low. What is Dan Campbell going to do? It was just it was a good game, to say the least, especially to wrap up the day where we had quite a few blowouts. And then some games where you just have to go, what the hell am I sitting around watching this for? OK, and so Dan Campbell will have an opportunity to continue to gamble.
Next up for the Lions, you got Tampa Bay, who handled their own business yesterday. And, you know, this is almost preseason for a lot of NFL squads. Starters don't necessarily get the repetitions. They have to get it in practice, sometimes split squads, sometimes against another team.
But you're not going full steam. There's there's nothing, not a preseason game, not a practice that can replicate live in-game action. And so it doesn't matter how much you practice and how much you give it.
It can help. But nothing's better than live reps. And the Lions got a quarterback that they just gave a 53 million dollars a year to in Jared Goff. But then we got another quarterback who's making a lot of money and he made his debut yesterday. His name is Tom Brady. And thank God it's not back out on the football field. How much more Tom Brady on a football field could just stomach?
I can't stomach anymore. He's in the broadcast booth. Remember, he signed a 10 year, 375 million dollar contract to work on Fox. He's working with Kevin Burkhardt. The presence of seven times Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has moved a former NFL tight end.
Greg Olsen has moved him to the second team. And Tom Brady's contract with Fox is worth more than every dollar, cent and penny he made on the football field. 23 years.
23 years. Tom Brady football salary, 333 mil. Ten years as a broadcaster at 375.
I guess it pays to win, right? You do all that hard work out on the football field. Damn it, I guess you can make that money in the broadcast booth. And Fox wanted to remind everybody that Tom Brady was in the booth for the Dallas Cowboys in the Cleveland Browns.
I mean, they even made us made a special video. Listen to this. He's Tom Brady and I'm Kevin Burkhardt. And you're a broadcaster.
How about that? We're here. It's been quite a journey, but I love being your partner. I'm excited as well. It's going to be a lot of fun. We should start with quarterbacks.
That seems to make a lot of sense. Cowboys making news. They come to an agreement with Dak Prescott on a big new contract, right? But with that comes pressure, not only long term, but what kind of pressure is he facing then and today in this game?
Yeah, Dak signed the largest contract in the history of the NFL. Now he's got to go out there and earn it. And 2023 was his best season.
He's coming off of that. But going forward, it's going to be what happens in the postseason, how he's going to be. But today, his challenge is going to be Miles Garrett, the right defensive end for Cleveland Browns, the rainy defensive player of the year.
He is one of the rare players who has no weaknesses. Dak's going to be dealing with him all day. Yeah, yeah, yeah, OK. And it's hard. Look, first, the game stunk. The game was trash.
You couldn't have put any human being in a different situation and expected a better outcome. Like, what was Tom Brady supposed to say? There was not a damn thing interesting about that game as the Cowboys kicked the Browns from pillar to post. What was there for him to analyze?
The answer is nothing. And of course, Tom Brady was just, I don't want to say beat up online because everybody has an opinion whether or not they know a thing about broadcasting or not. Of course, everybody has an opinion that makes them an expert.
It was a little man from what I heard, because I certainly tuned him in and I tuned him out of my OK. There's nothing worthwhile that he was going to say. You got people who are being critical.
People are like Fox spent three hundred and seventy five million dollars for this. And we also know that additional caveat that we found out weeks ago that if Tom Brady and his ownership stake in the Oakland look at me, Oakland, the Las Vegas Raiders is expected to go through, then Tom Brady, the broadcaster or Tom Brady period, he's going to be limited in the information that he has and the access to other teams, facilities and talent and players and coaches, because he basically, I don't want to say he's working for one of the enemies, but he has an invested stake into a team that's not official yet. And so I will give Tom Brady time because it's like anything else. I'm not the same broadcaster that I am. You know, when I started in, I don't know, 2018, 2019, Hickey's not the same broadcaster he was when he started.
Nobody is. You do something long enough and you get better at it. Tom Brady was an expert at playing football on the field, and Fox is paying for his expertise as a player to translate into his work into the microphone.
Is it a guarantee that it'll work? No, but at minimum, I guess they say he'll just be average and that'll be good enough because he's still Tom Brady. I ain't judging him.
And if he's going to suck, good for him. I ain't going to listen anyway. Hickey, how did you feel about Brady? Did you even pay attention much? Oh, I did.
I was very intrigued. I thought it was like, if you want to give a letter grade, that's like a B. I thought it was like average where like he was definitely smoother at times that I thought he would be like, it is tough when you're an analyst to have, I mean, maybe 20 seconds to explain what you just saw and then also preview the next play and what needs to happen in a very short sample size before the play goes off. So that is, I think, tough. And you only, you know, excel at that when you've done it for a while. So I thought he did that well for the most part. But also like, this is, I mean, one of, if not the most cerebral smart quarterback in NFL history, I was hoping to get more. Like, I feel like we didn't get much, you know, what was that? What more? That was an ass-whooping.
What was, what else are you supposed to say? But you know, like on the offensive line, like you got Miles Gavin on wide side, Micah Parsons on the other. Micah Parsons got off to a hot start early. What do the Browns need to do to prevent him from just destroying the whole game? Like he has answers. He has literally seen everything in his career. He has answers.
I'm sure to every single possible question. Look, a quarterback could see, I just was hoping to kind of hear more of that. And at least in game one, we really did not get much high level analysis whatsoever. There were some people were saying Tom Brady was boring. As they said.
And then enough to apologize after that. Well, not him. And it was, what's the gentleman's name from NFL Red Zone Network, right? Scott Hansen.
Yes, sir. He had, he had to kiss the ring. He had to go online today and apologize publicly for his criticism of Tom Brady. And he added Tom Brady. And I'm sure I didn't look.
And I think I know the answer. Tom Brady did not respond to that tweet, did he? I didn't see him do it.
No. I mean, if you criticize Tom Brady, and then you have to apologize because Tom Brady probably heard about it. Tom Brady's just going to ignore you, right?
Yeah, I would think so. This guy was, this guy was cursing people out on the field and let's go and all of this. If he has any type of intensity in the same type of way as he was as a player, I can imagine he's like, you know, screw that guy. I'm going to show him.
I mean, I would think so. Tom Brady did not reply to his, uh, his apology. He did not. Tom Brady doesn't care. Oh, good for him.
It's the JR Sportbree Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. Tom Brady will get better. Everything in due time.
Practice makes perfect. At least in that regard, especially for broadcasting. Tom Brady had a little bit of a rough go yesterday, but he made it through. Is he going to make it through 10 years and $375 million? I don't know about that. I'd be surprised if he went all the way through this contract.
I think he's going to do a few years, half, half the contract that he's going to quit. That's just me. But what do I know? Anyway, we're going to take a break. When we come back on the other side, we're going to talk about someone who also had a, uh, a rough go at it yesterday and not because of football. On the football field, he excelled, but on the way to the football field, he was in handcuffs. This was not good. And one of his teammates was also in handcuffs. Uh, not good. And then one of the police officers involved, uh, he's been placed on leave.
Also not good. What a wild day, wild way to start a Sunday. We'll get into this Tyreek Hill situation on the other side of the break.
If you want to holler at me, you can. The phone number is 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief. It's the JR Sport Brief Show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. 855-212-4227. That's 855-212-4227. And shout outs to everybody in the hospital and healthcare workers, people helping each other out. Thank you for tuning in and listening. And speaking of healthcare, this is an unfortunate one for the Los Angeles Rams.
Puka Nakua. This man is going on injured reserve. That means he's going to be out at minimum for the next four games. That sprained MCL he received in practice and in training camp. Well, he exacerbated it last night as he had to be carted off the field.
And now we know he's going to be on injured reserve for the next four games minimum. Puka Nakua lit it up on the field last year. Rookie records and receptions 105, almost 1,500 yards receiving on the other end of passes from Matthew Stafford. And it's unfortunate that we still haven't seen like what a full offense consistently rolling week after week after week looks like with a healthy Puka Nakua as well as Cooper Cup. So I know Sean McVay is certainly looking for that day. I know Matthew Stafford is also looking for that day.
We just haven't had it yet. Puka Nakua going to go on injured reserve. He had a rough go at it on the field.
Someone who didn't have a rough go at it on the field yesterday, but had a rough going on a way to work. And I think we've all been there before. Try to go to work. Something goes wrong.
Get a flat tire. Did the train stall? Is there something wrong with that bus? Are the kids sick? Is there an accident? Is there an emergency? Like life happens. I think we hear this every now and then, this type of phrase, life be lifin'.
And there's sometimes it's not a damn thing that you can do sometimes. And so yesterday, as the Dolphins took on the Jacksonville Jaguars at home, the Jaguars stunk. I'm just letting you know they sucked. The Dolphins end up with the victory, 20 to 17. Tyreek Hill, seven receptions, 130 yards, including a touchdown. Decided to celebrate his touchdown by being handcuffed. And what's the significance of that? Tyreek Hill was handcuffed on the way to the stadium.
On his way to work at approximately 10 30 in the morning. This said blocks away from the Miami Dolphins stadium, Tyreek Hill is detained and put in cuffs, ultimately was let go, was not arrested, was only detained because of speeding and not wearing his seatbelt. Which are things that are not good. Put your seatbelt on. It's not that difficult.
Drive slow. You don't want to kill anybody, especially if you're in a concentrated area. And so if it's just that, why the cuffs? The police said that he was uncooperative and they needed to detain him. Kaleis Campbell, his teammate, was also on his way.
First year Miami Dolphin. Kaleis Campbell was on his way to the stadium and decided to stop by and try to help. I guess the police did not appreciate that. They also detained Kaleis Campbell.
After the game where he was on fire on the field, but detained before it, Tyreek Hill explained to the media why he was put in cuffs. I have no idea for real. Uh, no idea. No idea, man.
It's crazy. No idea. I wasn't disrespectful, you know, because my mom didn't raise me that way. Didn't cuss and do none of that. So like I said, I'm still trying to figure it out, man. What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill?
Lord knows like what that guy or guys would have did. You feel me? And I was just making sure that, you know, I was doing, doing, um, what my uncle always told me to do whenever you were in a situation like that. Just listen, put your hands on the steering wheel. Just listen.
So gotta be careful, man. One of the officers who was there has been placed on leave while all of this is being investigated. And what all of this is, I have no idea.
Like I have none. They say he was speeding and he was uncooperative, but we don't know the details of what being uncooperative is. Tyreek Hill says, I didn't cuss. I don't know. What did he not listen to?
He didn't say what they said and neither did they. It's really hard to judge this one, but Kalaus Campbell, who has been nothing but an upstanding individual in the NFL. And he's been an upstanding individual in the NFL because he's been around a long ass time. Kalaus Campbell, a long ass time. Kalaus Campbell, this man was drafted in the NFL in 2008.
He is still going. Kalaus Campbell is a former Walter Payton, excuse me, Walter Payton man of the year. He has a great reputation. I mean, I can tell you that he was here in Atlanta last season. People love the guy.
He's a community dude. Kalaus went to stop the help. They put him in cuffs.
This is what he told the NFL network today. Yeah. You know, actually, they put handcuffs on me too. And I was like, what is going on?
You know what I mean? I didn't understand what the issue was, you know, for him to put handcuffs on me, I felt some kind of way, but you know, that just goes to show I was looking. So we didn't let that stop us. We just got back in line, got focused again and we're out there and playing a good football game, but that definitely was an interesting way to start a ball game.
They put handcuffs on you. So how did that feel like? How did you manage your emotions of that moment and then still come out here and do what you did?
Yeah, I was the first, you know, being 17 years in this game, you know, I don't really see a lot of firsts, but I saw Tyreek, you know, getting apprehended. I just wanted to make sure everything was okay. Trying to de-escalate the situation. Officer felt some kind of way, put handcuffs on me. And then, you know, I just talked to myself like, hey, don't let this get you going down.
Just keep it, get focused, stay locked in and just do what you know, you prepared to do. So you go here and win a ball game. They went out there and won that ball game. Trevor Lawrence stunk.
He helped out the best way he could. Trevor Lawrence only 12 and 21, 162 yards. That's not going to cut it. And we know the Dolphins only score in 20 days.
They typically want to go out there and light you up. They have the Buffalo Bills next on Thursday. A hell of a short week, right? On Sunday, opening day, you got two of your star players that end up in cuffs on the way to the game. No one is arrested, no charges, nothing brought, just an investigation in scant details outside of the video that we saw where Tyreek Hill is physically on the ground with an officer kind of right there on him. That's the details.
That's all we got. You play a game yesterday and you have a short weekend preparation and then you have to take on a division rival in the Buffalo Bills on Thursday down in Miami. And for the Buffalo Bills, they had a game yesterday and they were concerned about their own player, their star quarterback, and Josh Allen, who injured his hand against the Cardinals. They ended up with the victory 34 to 28. Josh Allen had to do all the work, pretty much accounting for four of their touchdowns. But the fact is, how does this affect Miami on Thursday?
Does this galvanize them or does it get swept under the rug? Today, their head coach, Mike McDaniel, who is known to be quirky and nerdy and today, it was none of that. He was very emotional talking about two of his players being placed in handcuffs. It's been hard for me not to find myself more upset the more I think about it. And that's because of, you know, my teammates and trying to put myself in that situation that they've described emotionally. And then knowing more than that, I think the thing that **** me up, honestly, to be quite frank, is knowing that I don't know exactly, I don't know what that feels like. Yeah, well, join the club. I thank God, I've never been cuffed. I've certainly been stopped by the police for nothing. That much I can tell you. Oh, this is, Picky, this is terrible.
Why does this happen? I mean, I guess you have so many players, Deshaun Watson, now it's, you know, breaking news is popping up, Deshaun Watson facing a lewd lawsuit, accusing him of sexual assault and battery. And it's just like, is this going to go, is Deshaun Watson's contract going to go down as one of the worst ever? Yes, probably the worst ever. It's, it's on its way.
It's on its way. You look at what's going on with Deshaun Watson. You look down in Florida and you take a look at what's going on in Baker Mayfield or with Baker Mayfield actually winning. And you just say to yourself, Baker Mayfield is a dude coming out on top here. This is the most Browns thing ever.
Sometimes you got to stick with what you know and what you got in front of you. I thought I was done talking about Deshaun Watson, uh, sexual assault cases, but, uh, here we are in what year we at 2024. Interesting, sad, actually, uh, speaking of sad, or at least more details, uh, the union, of course the union, because they represent their, uh, constituents there, their people pay the bills. The Miami Dade police union says Tyreek Hill was immediately cooperative on the scene with the officers. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground.
Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave. And so I just hope this was much to do about nothing. It's just, um, look, we've had enough issues in this country, whether it's televised or not televised with law enforcement and individuals in the country, a lot of folks, particularly black men, and it just sucks because it's not a one, one size fits all. And there's, there's a lot of just intricacies involved. And it's just, you never know.
Like I went there with Tyreek Hill. I can only judge by what the union says, but what does he say happens? So it's real tough to judge when you're not there.
And when we don't have the full investigation, of course the union is going to stick up for the officers as they should. And I just wish that we, uh, got to a space where just everybody was responsible. You know, if Tyreek Hill was speeding, man, slow your ass down. And anybody who's ever driven out there to Miami dolphin stadium, it's basically in a residential neighborhood. Like once you start getting off that highway, you're going through those roads that pull up on the stadium. It's, it's not a place to speed. And so look, without knowing all the details in a general broad sense, you know, everybody can do better, everybody.
And we'll find out what the miscommunication is or was, or who was, or isn't at fault. It's just a sad state of affairs to just, uh, you know, start your season off and see somebody just cuffed on the ground. It sucks.
Hey, can you have any thoughts about this, man? You weren't there. No, uh, no drones, anything, right? Not that I've seen.
No. And outside of the pedestrian, you know, footage of him on the ground, we have no idea. All we can have is each other's words about what's being said.
It's interesting. I guess maybe this happens more frequently than you think, but like maybe this is high profile, like Tyree kill is claiming that he is totally innocent. You hear Mike McDaniel getting emotional class Campbell with his background, all seem to say that Tyree kill is innocent here. Miami day police saying that, you know, what they essentially with that statement just read is what the, how the officers conducted themselves was correct and proper two sides kind of digging in. Um, we'll see how much this investigation, you know, does unveil or unveil. I don't know if there's any other video that, you know, we'll come out to see, but yeah, I mean, I really hope that this is not a, you know, I really hope the progress I like to think that was made in the last few years is not wiped away or hurt with this. That's, that's, I guess, where I stand.
It sucks. Things like this happen all the time, whether we, whether it's a celebrity, uh, that's a well-known or not, it sucks. To me, it says a lot that Kaleis Campbell was also put in handcuffs.
That, that's a little bit more, more shocking to me. NFL Walter Payton, man of the year. It hasn't had a negative thing said about him since he's been in the public eye. I guess we'll find out sooner than later. Y'all be safe out there. Whoever the hell you are, just think about other people.
Don't matter who you are. It's the JR sport re-show here with you on the infinity sports network. There's a bunch of other people who have their debuts, some quarterbacks in the NFL. We had some rookies make some starts and let's just say, uh, we had a mixed bag. We'll talk about it on the other side, the JR sport re-show the infinity sports network.
