It is the JR Sportbrief show on the Infinity Sports Network. Happy Thursday to you. I hope you've had a good day, a good afternoon, a good evening. I hope you're good. I'm gonna be rolling with you for the next two hours. Time flies when you're having fun. I've been hanging out for two hours already.
That's right, if you didn't know, now you know. This show gets started every single weekday at 6 p.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific. Thank you for tuning in.
Whether you're rolling on the highways, the byways, the back roads, the mountains, the plains, the valleys of the hills, I appreciate you for being here. You can always listen on the free Odyssey app, your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate, Sirius XM Channel 158, and a smart speaker. You got one of those? You got one of them stupid boxes in your house?
The one that listens to you all day? Well, you can ask it to play the Infinity Sports Network and we pop right on up. Good for you. I might be in Atlanta, Georgia, super producer and host, Ryan Hickey's in New York City. We have smart speakers in New York. They're in the restroom. Hickey, you know how, Hickey, I, am I bad by saying this? Are you ready for this one? I'm gonna get in trouble. I'm excited, let's hear it.
As a, as a company, right? And feel free to hit the dump button any second now, okay? In the bathroom? We couldn't put in the ceiling, like the ceiling, right? The ceiling. We don't have, it's not in the ceiling, it's on the wall. So you're more upset not at the location of the speaker, more upset that the technology is not up to date where it's not in plain sight. It's literally stuck on the wall. Yes. I don't know if it's magnets stuck on there, but it's right there.
Adhesive. Let's put it this way. Could you imagine, and you know, I'm gonna upset somebody, somebody. Imagine going to someone's home, right? You say, hey, you know, where's your restroom?
And they go over there, right? And you go in there and there's a smart speaker just affixed to the, the bathroom mirror. Wouldn't that be kind of odd or is it just me? Now I'm, I'm, I'm being, what's the word? I'm being a jerk.
I'm sorry. I wouldn't say odd. I think it's actually a really good place for it. Cause whether it's the shower or whatever you're doing your business, like nice to have. Yeah. It's small, but just, well, maybe it's different because it's a public bathroom at work. Are you more afraid of like, not afraid, but like, is it because they listen or is it just like, because you see it? It's odd place.
The hickey, the first time I went into the restroom, I looked to my rest. Whoa, whoa. It's an Alexa in here. So you can look as a positive though, because if there's something on, you don't like, like if you want to listen to the show and there's something else playing, you can just say, Hey, Alexa play infinity sports network.
And guess what? No channel changes. Has it ever been on any one, any one but two stations in there really though?
Three. I have heard, I've heard infinity. I have heard our sister station WFAM. Yes.
I have heard our new station 10 10 wins. Yes. It used to be music for a while.
Like when it was first implemented. Do you really want music in a public bathroom? I would say anything. I'll take anything, anything outside or that's not silence.
You know what? There's a lot of sounds. Exactly. Right. So I don't care if it's bad oldies, bad oldies is better than dead silence.
Well, we know the other sounds that are also right. Right. I'll just put it to you this way. Every time I go into that restroom, I just want to want to rip it off. Like it doesn't belong here.
If you're going to have, if you're going to in a public restroom, if you're going to have a music, put it in the ceiling, some speakers in the ceiling or something like blow out the budget and get surround sound in the ceiling in the bathroom. Yes. For when I, when I visit, when's the last time I was there? Let's see. Huh? I think he's, when was the last time I saw you in person? It's been a while. Whoa. So the three or four times you come up here a year, you want to make sure that, and your sight line is no Alexa. Yeah, no, no Alexa. But then your next contract.
I will. We got, is the Pac-Man still there? And is it somebody stole it already?
No, it's not been stolen. The Pac-Man is still there. And so is, I think it's NBA Jam. No, like two, two games.
There is not, it's not NBA Jam. I think it might be. Oh, that's new.
How about that? Is that Steve Summers things still need a coffee? The plaque. Is it a plaque or it's a big picture of him? Oh, I forgot about the picture. The plaque is still there. The picture I think is gone.
Steve Summers. Great. The plaque is gone. No, no, the plaque is still there.
The picture's gone. He took himself home. He might've. Why not?
I don't blame him. Hey, look, I'd want to stare at myself too every day. You can, it's called the mirror.
That's true. I'm sure you can look at yourself in the phone too. Good job, Hickey.
Good stuff. Anyway, and now that people have learned about our bathroom, our public bathroom at the radio station, now we can talk about some other things. 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. Hey, thank you to Brian Fisher from Fox Sports for joining us to talk some college football last hour. We talked a lot of football because football is upon us. Got the college football season starting on Saturday.
Once we get past the Labor Day holiday, we got NFL football. We talked about AJ Terrell picking up his new deal with the Atlanta Falcons. We talked about the ongoing quarterback saga in Pittsburgh with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. We talked about Aaron Judge smashing yet another home run. He now has a 48 on the season.
He's on pace for 61. And then Kirk Ferentz, this guy suspended one game. Recruiting violation.
Jumping the gun on Cade McNamara. Big deal, one game, no big deal. And then right before we went to break, we were talking about all these mobile quarterbacks in the game and who's moving and who's shaking and how much the game has changed.
And how about this? We got a Thursday night football preseason matchup. How exciting. We got the Colts and we got the Bengals. Picky Anthony Richardson is going to make it through this one, right? Safe to say yes. I can guarantee he will come out of this game healthy. He will make it through the game healthy. Man, they was, you know, let's let's talk about him in a bit, because I heard the Bengals were dissing him in practice, man. You can't throw or you do is run, run, run, run, run. We'll get into that.
8 5 5 2 1 2 42 27. And I got to tell you about a trade that took place today between, I guess, reluctant bedfellows. James is calling from L.A., Los Angeles. It's the J.R. sport reshow.
James, you're on the Infinity Sports Network. What's up? What's up, J? How are you doing, brother? I'm OK. All right. Yeah. I had a quick, a quick question for you. Really, I got two of them. One of them I'm embarrassed to ask you because I should know better.
But I'll ask you the first one first. Thinking about those running quarterbacks, the only two I could think of was Elway and Steve Young that have ever been successful and won a Super Bowl. So I'm wondering, is it an advantage? I know times have changed. That was 20, 25, 30 years ago.
But I wonder, is it, is there a reason why another one hasn't came to the profession? I mean, people got close. I know D-Mac went. He got close. But really, you know, Cam Newton, you know, but they got beat. They want to get beat. So I wonder, is this something to just be in a pocket quarterback?
And then my second, I listen to it off the air. My second question is, why are more people running the shotgun offense that gives them that extra time to throw, especially if you're a pocket pastor? I mean, I remember, you know, I know it's college with Charlie Ward when they went to that shotgun offense. Bobby Bowden put him in there.
They took off. Roger Staubach made it, had it, was a gimmick for it. But they always got to pick up that third down. And I wonder why more people don't run that to give them that extra time if you're a pocket pastor, not mobile. And I'll listen to you out there, brother.
Thank you, James, for calling from Los Angeles. Absolutely. To answer your first question, I wouldn't I wouldn't consider the quarterbacks who you mentioned as as rushing quarterbacks. Like when I think about somebody who's a rushing or there's one thing to be able to go out there and scramble.
And yet we live in a different situation. You know, you asked about John Elway as as one example. John Elway was out there in the 80s and in the 90s. OK, for him to go out there and pick up, I don't know, you know, 200 plus yards was just like, oh, OK, he's scrambling. He running. He was able to pick up yardage with his feet on a third down situation. He rushed and slid for five or six yards.
Like it's it's night and day. Looking at someone like Josh Allen run with the football versus John Elway, or dare I say, yeah, whether you want to look at somebody like Michael Vick or Lamar Jackson, like there's a vast difference. I think there's a huge difference between a guy who is just a a rushing. I don't even want to say rushing quarterback, a dual threat. You know, you can't look at Lamar Jackson and be like, oh, this guy is just a he's a rushing quarterback. No, he's a dual threat. You look at Josh Allen. I'm not going to look at him and say, oh, well, he's just a rushing.
No, this man is a dual threat. Don't matter if you're going out there season to season. These guys are snatching up seven hundred, eight hundred in the case of Lamar Jackson's like, hey, I got I got one thousand yards plus rushing for you. I've thrown for another three thousand. I'm throwing you twenty, twenty five touchdowns.
I'm rushing for another, I don't know, five to ten. Like these these guys are machines. And why are they not in shotgun? Because a lot of them are running. I would think you want to keep them a little bit closer to the line of scrimmage as opposed to just saying, hey, we're going to air it out.
I don't see any reason why not. And so there's a big difference between, hey, this guy can go ahead and scramble versus this guy can run. You know, even for all of of Mike Vick's athleticism in his ridiculous speed. Mike Vick, I remember watching Mike Vick. It was like he was out there. He was out there cutting. He was out there cutting dudes and breaking ankles like he was Barry Sanders. OK, when I see Lamar Jackson, it's a little bit more straight line speed.
Lamar Jackson is able to run around. He finds the angle. He finds a hole and it's like guns a blazing.
He's gone. He's able to put on the jet packs. And the next thing you know, he's he's down the field. You know, you ask about Cam Newton, Cam Newton.
And I think this is one of the reasons he didn't last. No surprise there that the end of his career had a shoulder issue. I see Cam Newton. I'm like, this dude is a battering ram. Cam Newton out on the football field. He was bigger than some of the dudes.
Most of the dudes that were trying to tackle him, whether they happen to be linebackers or defensive ends here, they might be wider, but he could go out there and absorb the hit and take the punishment. And so it's just real interesting. This is what I love. And this is why for years I was just ready and I was ready to see a new era of quarterback. And I understand everything that Tom Brady said earlier this week because we played it. Tom Brady took the approach of, hey, they're dumbing down the system. The players are are not taking the time to develop the same type of way. I get it. I understand it.
But there used to be a day and OK, all things change. But it's like, does everybody got to be a dropout passer? And so the only difference is we got one Steve Young who can scramble a little bit more than I don't know.
We had Steve Berlin here the other day, you know, where Duck Flutie like they were they were minor. Hickey, would you agree that the quarterbacks, they seem to be a little bit more cookie cutter? It's just like this guy or this guy, Dan Marino, big arm or Steve Young able to scramble a little bit more. But the variations weren't there the way that they are today. There is a Lamar Jackson who's different than a Josh Allen, who's different than a Patrick Mahomes, who's different than a Justin Herb.
Like just every QB seemingly. Yeah. A lot of them are very athletic in different ways.
But the variation is wider. I think it leads to a more exciting game than, you know, hey, I'm just going to take a couple steps back and plant my foot and throw the ball and see where it goes. Absolutely. I think also in part because now quarterback is relied upon more than ever, right? Like, you know, you look back 90s, running back 2000s.
Yeah. That was the guy was a running back. Who did you have?
How good was he? Now it's quarterback. And now I think that's why all of a sudden you're seeing more variations, more athletic quarterbacks take over because they're asked to do more versus 25 years ago. The cookie cutter thing is fair because a lot of the quarterbacks are the same because it was convert a third down here and there.
But let's rely on our run game and our defense. Yeah, it's going to be real cool as it, you know, we, well, I've made plenty of jokes this week. I think both. What's the guy's name? Darryl Doucette. I remember his name. Good for him. Good job. Nice.
Yeah, I did. The Darryl Doucette is the dude running around in a USA flag football. He thinks he's deserving of a spot on the Olympic team because this is what he's done. And a guy like Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow, they have not. So he thinks he, at least they should have tryouts to get on the Olympic team as the quarterback position continues to evolve. And that's actually interesting to think about. Quarterbacks are eating up some of the rushing yardage, I guess, unless the team has Derek Henry or Josh Jacobs, what have you. And what have you. But the wide receivers have almost it's like everybody. What's the word?
There's like a consolidation out here. Whereas, OK, you need a third wide receiver, do you? Is it not the running back now? In a lot of cases, do running backs even out of the backfield, are they not acting as slot receivers? Like I could close my eyes and if you said, hey, what is a healthy Alvin Kamara going to do this season? Oh, he's going to rush for approximately eight hundred yards and then he's going to rush. You know, he's going to haul in another eight hundred in the air, ground air eight hundred yards, both. And that's that's not the way it used to be.
You could look at guys who would do it occasionally. The Roger Craig's a thousand, a thousand, the Marshall Fox, a thousand, a thousand, Christian McCaffrey, a thousand, a thousand. But nowadays it's like, hey, running back, we need you to catch the ball, bro. We need to run you into the ground and you need to catch the ball.
Hey, a quarterback, can you pick up some yardage on the ground? And so this is why we got so many running backs who are so upset with how things have changed, because they've been devalued. And so what happens now when the running back position, I mean, they all are basically, I feel like glorified wide receivers now. They're the tough wide receivers. I mean, if you're running back, cannot catch the ball. I'm going to say your team sucks. OK, I mean, one of the reasons the Eagles, if the Eagles don't have some type of big bounce back by adding Saquon Barkley, I mean, sheesh, what are we doing here?
If they can't turn that around, then Nick Sirianni, he should get the boot. It's crazy out here, the NFL, for all of its changes, the way that the offenses run and the positions have changed, that that is just crazy. Quarterbacks are different, running backs, wide receivers. It's a wild world. I'll take it.
Change isn't always bad. It's the JR Sportbreeze show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. Speaking of those Eagles, they made a trade today.
I'll tell you who they traded, what they got back. And if it even matters because the Eagles have Saquon Barkley, I'll explain on the other side of the break is the JR Sportbreeze show on the Infinity Sports Network. You're listening to the JR Sportbreeze.
Our sportbreeze show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. NFL preseason goes on. It's winding down. College football is winding up. We get started on Saturday.
And as I sit here in the studio, this is pretty cool. Anthony Richardson is playing football. Great. He just threw a touchdown a couple of minutes ago to A.D. Mitchell.
A rookie. Great. Amazing. Now to Texas. Hickey, you're happy about that, right? Fired off. Let's go. That's some good.
And Joe Burrow not playing. He's flexing. He's searching. Oh, he's just biting his nails.
OK, great. You know what sucks is, you know, he's got the cameras. Hickey, I think somebody not this. There's been some weird things that the cameras have caught. Somebody was, you know, digging in their nose, somebody. There was a New York Met.
You know what I'm talking about? There was a guy standing on the railing and a New York Met decided to poke a guy in a place. It was just like, whoa. And the camera quickly cut away. Are you sure that was the Mets? I saw a similar video. It wasn't the Mets. Like two weeks ago. I'm like, whoa.
All right. So that's how we celebrate. And I guess in baseball in 2024. Hey, listen, there's a lot of things that happened in 2024. Hopefully all 2024 Anthony Richardson is able to make it through a full season. I certainly hope what I just watched with the touchdown pass is not the highlight of his year. It will be interesting to see how much he plays as Joe Burrow is just wearing a headset, biting his nails, ready to play and whoever the hell his backup is just through a, through an interception. So yeah, who cares? Not really an interception.
The ball was on the ground. Anyway, right before we went to break, we talked about the versatility of the modern NFL player or quarterback or wide receiver. Everybody's now tasked with going out there and being able to do multiple things. You better be able to run. You better be able to catch and what have you. And then I said, the Philadelphia Eagles, they got one of those quote unquote, dual threat running backs.
Cause everybody has one. Now you better catch the ball at all times. That's Saquon Barkley. They got Devante Smith. They got a J Brown.
They got jail and hurts. Come on. Everybody who touches the ball out in Philadelphia, they are basically a gigantic weapon.
They are. Well, the Eagles decided to go out and add another weapon today by trading for Jahan Dotson. This man was selected out of the draft two years ago, 16th overall Washington is already getting rid of him.
Why? Because it's just pretty much everything in Washington is new right now. And including the quarterback and a coach, they're trying to figure out what the hell is going on behind Terry McLaurin. And so Jahan Dotson goes to Philadelphia to technically be the other wide receiver. The one who will not, the one who will get the ball after A.J. Brown and Devante Smith and Saquon Barkley and Dallas Goddard somehow, some way every now and then Jahan Dotson will get the ball. And he's been a little bit of a disappointment in Washington. And so Washington, a team that has Jaden Daniels, now Austin Eckler and Terry McLaurin, they're trying to figure out who the hell else is going to step up to score some points. How could I forget about Zach Ertz, the former Eagle there himself? You know what?
The guys in Washington, they spoke. They're trying to figure out who the hell is going to help Jaden score some points and put them on the board. You know what? Austin Eckler says, it's next man up. This league is forever evolving and you know, it's really fluid. So we don't really know what's going on up there in the front office sometimes. And when decisions are made, you know, we have to roll with the punches. I know he's going to have a great opportunity out there and, you know, in Philly.
But, you know, wishing him the best of luck. And for us, you know, we got to make sure, hey, whoever's taking that spot or filling those roles does a good job. The NFL is a wild, wild world because it was only a couple of weeks ago that Dan Quinn's offensive coordinator of these Washington commanders, Cliff Kingsbury, the quarterback whisperer.
He was talking about Johan Dodson. And he was like, yeah, this guy can be amazing here. He has tremendous ball skills.
He's played in a couple different systems, you know, since he's gone to the league. And I think once he gets comfortable with us, whether it's inside, outside, I think you're going to see him just really take off. He had a great catch today. But the one thing I like about him is when you challenge him and you ask him to compete, he's going to go and he's going to compete his tail off and make the plays. And so I've been really happy with what I've seen for him. I love his competitive nature. And I think he's just continue to get better.
I can tell him and Jane have a good rapport, which is encouraging. Not no more. They traded him. He go. They moved on. They kept it moving.
Hickey, you saw this. You saw him at Penn State or are you shocked that he's been counted there? Very much so. I mean, he's a guy who finds the end zone a lot. He's a possession receiver, could push the ball down the field like he could play him inside.
You could play him outside. Like he's very versatile. It's like he's done bad in his first two years. But I mean, clearly they are so down on him that not only they treading after two years drafting in the first round, trading in division.
And that's when you know to like you think this guy is just totally toast. If you're willing to give him to your rival for, you know, pennies on the dollar. Yeah. So Washington.
Is sending him and a fifth round pick to Philadelphia in an exchange, Washington gets a third round pick into seventh rounders, so they get a third round pick. But if you're if you're Washington, do you care what Philadelphia is doing? Do you care? Do you care?
Really? Do you care? No, I mean, you don't. I mean, obviously, I hope I guess they do poorly. So your draft pick is higher.
But you are right. How the Eagles do outside of the two games they play against the commanders has no impact on the future of the commanders. Yeah, the commanders are they're rebuilding right now. And Philadelphia is out here trying to trying to win a Super Bowl. They're trying to bounce back from that disastrous ending of the year. Last year, they got smoked by Tampa and just fell apart at the seams.
And it is a cutthroat business. You know who you can ask? Oh, you can ask his former teammate, Jamison Crowder, who says, yeah, I went to work today and damn, my man's is gone. Man, Jahan, man, good player. I got a lot of respect for him. Like I said, last year, I've been able to watch him work last year and then throughout camp.
He's a heck of a ballplayer. Like I said, it's tough, though. Were you kind of shocked when you saw it? Oh, yeah, I mean, for sure.
You know what I'm saying? You know, somebody just kind of catch you off guard. So, yeah, most definitely I was shocked.
You get the alert on your phone or what? Yeah, I saw him coming out, was getting ready to go to walkthrough. And he told me he was coming out, he was coming out of the locker room. So, yeah, he had told me.
Damn. I like how the reporter, Hickey, the reporter was ready to start some stuff, right? Oh, yeah, he was ready. It's like, he's like, oh, did you did you find out on your phone? Or did the team tell you? He's like, oh, he told himself. Maybe that's why Ohio State, Chuck Martin was just like, you media people.
Media, always trying to stir some things up. That's funny. Funny business. Anyway, what would be funny if the Eagles don't turn things around? That would be that would be actually tragic. You think Bill Belichick is hoping that that he fails?
Hickey, Sirianni? I think so. Yeah, he wants to coach again. That's one of his best chances.
I think so. He's plotting. Doing all this TV. I will be I'm going to be paying it. Not nothing. I'm lying.
I'm lying. But I will know. I think for the most part, I will know the most impactful things that Bill Belichick says, because they'll go viral online and I'll see him. I'm going to pay close attention to how he evaluates the Philadelphia Eagles, because that team is built to go back to us. They are built to go back to us. They are built to go to the NFC title game and just go blow for blow like like some boxing match with the 49ers.
And so Nixon, Ariane, it'll be only a matter of time before he's out there bumbling and stumbling and trying to get his words together. Hey, good luck to the Eagles. So they just suck. Last year, playoffs are going to be fun. I'm hyped up for this man. This season, I don't think. Yeah, you got to look at the Chiefs and go, oh, yeah, yeah, the Chiefs are there.
We know the top teams, but we got some cool wild cards. You can go blow for blow, man. I'm looking forward to this. And Anthony Richardson is still playing for now. Good luck to the man.
I hope he's healthy. It's the J.R. sport re-show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. I told you it is a hard knock life. If you don't perform, you get the boot. OK, we had an MLB manager who got the boot today at Scott's service.
We'll get into that. And then also, man, this is another football team going absolutely nowhere up in New England, like they're trying to figure out what to do with with Drake, May and Jacoby percent. What a tough, terrible decision that is for now, at least it's the J.R. sport re-show. You're listening to the J.R. sport brief. It is the J.R. sport re-show here with you on the Infinity Sports Network. 855-212-4227.
That's 855-212-4227. Man, I just I just praise Anthony Richardson for being healthy. He threw that touchdown at 80 Mitchell. And then as we went to break, he's over here throwing a pick six to the Bengals.
All right. As long as he's healthy, I think he'll be perfectly fine. Hickey, if he is healthy and makes it through the season, what do you expect his numbers to look like? Oh, I would say. 35 total touchdowns. Probably realistically. Double digit turnovers, 10, 11 between the fumbles and interceptions, and the Colts should be in the playoffs.
Wow. Help me out again. What do you think is passing yard? You said 35 total touchdowns, right? 25 throwing and 10 rushing.
Yeah, they they they I mean. So he played in. He finished one game. He played four. He totaled seven touchdowns in those four games, four rushing, three passing. They ran him a lot in the red zone.
I don't think that will change. And especially now with a healthy Jonathan Taylor, who was someone who was not in the back field when Anthony Richardson was on the field last year. Right now, defense have to worry about, you know, Taylor.
So maybe now that opens up more holes for Richardson to run, I think he'll run the ball a good amount in the red zone, which should lead to a good amount of rushing touchdowns. So will he pass for more than 2500 yards? Yeah.
Yeah. I would say like 32 feels pretty good. Thirty two. Thirty two hundred yards passing. That's not a lot.
You know, now nowadays, I guess I just is he that good of a passer? Yeah. Oh yeah. Today, seven of eight first drive since all four.
All right. I don't know. I just haven't seen I've seen all the freak plays out of Florida. And I feel like there's so much to see. He is he's the big mystery. If you ask me in the league like he is, he's a what the hell is this guy going to be like? We know what he's he physically is capable of. But can he do it?
We saw it in bursts. No, no, I think it's fair to be skeptical. I'm not saying like, you know, no, I think you are you are right to question for sure what he can do and how consistent he can be.
I will definitely take the optimistic approach. And from the small sample I saw last year, I do think that he's further along than even I thought. Deep ball is good. I think definitely middle of field to, you know, closer throws, accuracy and decision making need to improve.
But first and foremost, that starts with health. And if he's healthy in the short samples, as we saw last year, he produces. Well, I want to see what he can do this year. I want to see what Justin Herbert does in this this first year. We got Greg Roman as his offensive coordinator.
I know a lot of people in Baltimore absolutely hated this man's guts when he was with the Ravens working with Lamar Jackson. I'm interested to see what Deshaun Watson can do coming off of that broken shoulder. But Trevor Lawrence, are they finally consistently going to get over the hump? And is he finally consistently going to take him to the postseason?
I'm trying to figure out. Is there a quarterback that you want to see perform this year? Anybody that stands out to you? So one guy I'm definitely interested in seeing, not how good it could be, but how the adjustments are, is CJ Stroud. He was great last year. And I'm not doubting or saying that he's going to fall off a cliff this year. I'm just more curious now that the tape is out right now that teams have had a full off season to see what he does well, also see what he struggles with. You would, I would assume, different wrinkles, different defenses are coming to face him here in 2024. How does he respond?
How does he play now that teams kind of know how to game plan for him? This man is going to go out there. And I think he said it himself.
Well, we spoke to somebody who said it. He's going to throw more interceptions than he did last year. He threw five interceptions. He's going to throw ten interceptions. Ten. Ten.
More. I think it's fair. Ten in the over. I would take the over. Yeah, I'm with you there. If that equals also more touchdown passes, I don't think Texans fans would be that upset.
But I think it's a fair question. With how well he did last year, we've seen other quarterbacks have sophomore sums. What does that slump look like and how long does it last? Yeah, Texans fans, they had a good last year. I think they'll be competitive enough to end up back in the postseason.
It's just a matter of can they continue on the ascent? They got their guy in C.J. Stroud. I mean, the guy that was drafted before him, I know people are waiting to see what that looks like. And speaking of waiting to see what anything looks like, it's going to be a rough year for people in New England.
I told you, I might have to correct myself. I told you everybody out in Pittsburgh, the situation with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields is bad. Like up in New England, they're really having battles right now. They're having whole conversations as to whether or not Jacoby Percette should open up the season or whether or not it should be Drake May. And I'm saying to myself, like, let Drake, what's the rush? Is there really a big difference between letting Drake May sit down for a few games and just take less abuse and maybe watch the game and live game action? I would rather have that be a part of his experience.
You can learn on the sidelines. Let them watch. Let them go, oh, I don't want that hit. Let them watch. Let them say, oh, man, the offensive line really sucks. Let him watch and go, well, damn it. Who the hell am I throwing the ball to? I would let him watch and soak all that in and observe and have that as an experience as opposed to throwing him to the wolves. There are people in New England who just say Drake May play him.
And I'm saying, what's what's the rush? This is a team that is going nowhere. The Pats quarterback coach, T.C. McCartney, he spoke today and he said, Drake May, he says he just gets better and better and better and better and better. Really good. I mean, Drake's really sharp. You guys know that. You guys have talked to him. He picks things up really fast. So it's been a lot of fun to watch him. And like you said, his confidence is growing. He's getting better and better. Getting better and better and better.
But that's still electrical. People said, take the beat, man. You got 17 games in the season. Does it matter if Drake May plays 10 of them even at least?
I think by the time we get to 10 games or seven games in, I think at that point, yeah, you can probably go ahead and sit Jacoby Brissett as if he makes it that far behind the offensive line. You know, we spoke to Matt Sims yesterday. Great conversation.
Go ahead. Listen on the Free Odyssey app. Former NFL quarterback, son of Phil, has a podcast with his dad, Phil Sims.
Complete, complete. Excuse me. And Matt Sims, he basically said, yeah, Drake May, he needs to find a seat on the bench. I would not star Drake May right now from what I've seen on film in these first two preseason games. He just hasn't had enough repetitions in these preseason games for you to even really see what he's really capable of.
And the rest that he has done, they've been, you know, a little inconsistent. So I think let him sit, let him watch and learn from Jacoby Brissett, you know, get used to the NFL game, get more practices under your belt and, you know, hey, maybe hopefully midway through the year, end of the year, they can give some opportunities to give them some reps, but I don't think that he is anywhere near ready to go and play for this NFL team right now. And really, you know, unfortunately for the Patriots and Patriots fans, I just feel like the offense in general has not looked good. Jacoby is also struggling in the offense and they really need to work out some kinks and get their identity a little bit more clear as far as what type of team they're going to be. They definitely made adjustments with bringing in skill guys and have speed on the outside, which is something that's been lacking.
The offensive line play is improving, but we'll see what happens as the season goes along. But overall, I would say that Drake May, give him time. Let's not rush him into this process because he is nowhere near ready to step on the NFL field and lead a franchise.
Yeah, I don't even think it's, well, I don't even think it's that much. I think you just want him, don't want him to go out there and catch the ass whooping. I don't think you want him to go out there and catch the beat down. You know, I will never forget.
And it's a, there's a big, huge difference. Ironically, as we just talked about CJ Stroud of the Texans, I will never forget when David Carr started for the Texans, that man was beat up and beat down so damn much. He was basically cooked. Like there was no career after that. He was basically cooked.
He was sacked what? Like 50 plus times out of the gate. You know what? Not even Hickey. I understated it.
Oh my God. David Carr was sacked 76 times in 16 games. Oh, I thought it was like 60 to 76 times.
He was sacked 76 times in 16 games. That's, I think my math is correct. That's more than four sacks a game.
Yeah, it is. Oh my goodness. That's a beat down. Now, now let's, let's, what's not factored in are all the other ass whooping that he caught as a result. Like the hits, all the hits that did not count as sacks. Like, come on, man.
That's a war crime. Oh my God. The Patriots, they can't let that, look, I'm not saying that the New England Patriots offensive line is going to be an expansion franchise bad, which there's no sense in playing Drake May. What's 17 games versus 10 answers, answers, nothing, not a damn thing. The Patriots just got to, they got it. They got a welcome to the real world. You win some and you lose some. And fortunately for you, yeah, you, the Patriots, all y'all have done is win for the better part of 20 years.
Welcome to the real world. And I know it's been what now? Four years since Tom Brady was in a uniform was in 2019 was, yeah, 2019 was the last year. And this God awful year that we had in 2020, the COVID year, they had cam Newton in 2020, 21, 22, 23, Hickey. That's five years. Damn, bro. How did Hickey, how did that happen so fast?
I don't know. I was going to say time flies when you're having fun. No, that was not fun. A lot of fun.
There was nothing fun about 2020 or 2021 or 20, 22, 20, 20, 20, 21. At least this was somewhat the Patriots. Yeah. The Mac Jones. And we'll see now carrying Trevor Lawrence bags, carrying his pads. Oh man, that must suck. The guy went home. The guy signed with his hometown team as the backup. Wow.
Well, all that money from new England is still came in. So there you have it. Good for him. Maybe he'll have a career resurgence somewhere else, like a Geno Smith, or maybe like Sam Donald will do this year for the Vikings.
