brief it's been a busy busy friday so much to get into let me give you a quick rundown we learned today that aaron donald is retiring aaron donald is done with the nfl and speaking of done juan howard is done as the head coach of michigan jimmy garoppolo he's not done jimmy g is going to back up matthew stafford with the rams we got guys who've been released michael gallup has been cut russell wilson introduced as the new quarterback for the steelers the steelers are trading kenny pickett it's just a lot just a lot going on we can fade out we're good we like the music we're good it's just a lot going on and so thank you to everybody once again for tuning in and being locked in to the show i'll say the number again eight five five two one two four cbs it's eight five five two one two four cbs before i say or do anything hey chris how you doing man you good yes sir i'm doing well how about yourself i'm good you came back for more huh they couldn't get rid of me i'm still here let's go so what does that mean that hickey's like we put him back in a closet somewhere is he under the desk like what's the deal with him i'm not sure where he's at yeah who cares right he's not here right now we're in the moment let's do this we're in the moment we're gonna we're gonna keep things rolling i talked about some of the larger stories that we're going to talk about or get into i should say as the show continues on aaron donald he retired uh russell wilson and also patrick queen i know everybody wants to take a look at russell wilson patrick queen also introduced as a member of the steelers once i got off air last night uh keenan allen traded over to the chicago bears we're going to get into that the minnesota vikings speaking of a trade uh the vikings pick up an additional trade asset in the first round deon sanders had some comments about his son and other players like caleb williams playing in the cold bill belicheck is in the news and not for anything good going on they're just basically killing the guy for not playing malcolm butler in the postseason when they lost or excuse me the super bowl when they lost to the eagles i will explain and get into it we're going to hear from russell wilson of course we will the newest member of the steelers marquis brown is going to the chiefs let's see if he can stay healthy in the process shohei otani and the dodgers they're in south korea they're getting ready to open the season out there and of course as you can probably guess shohei otani was mobbed and then like a ghost sammy sosa appears in chicago sammy sosa spoke to the media we'll get into that later on in the show because sammy sosa still won't admit that he did some uh performance enhancing drugs that he he used he won't do that so we got a lot to discuss let's get this the hell up on out the way and of course there's more college basketball going on just all over the place listen this is the big news for today we'll get into aaron donald because he's retired we got plenty of time to talk about him because there's not going to be any new updates when it comes down to somebody like russell wilson russell wilson had his press conference in pittsburgh addressed the media spoke to the media said everything that you would expect him to say i'm happy to be here i want to win championships this is a great team a great franchise a great organization everything that is just ridiculously boilerplate russell wilson said don't just take my word for it this is russell wilson from earlier today talking about joining the steelers well super grateful to be here um obviously uh to be a pittsburgh steeler uh it's a great tradition um to be able to compete and to be able to go to go to work with these guys every single day is the gift of this game enjoying the process of it all and uh you know the reason why i wanted to come here because i want to be able to win championships with coach tomlin and these guys in the locker room and and uh you know we've got some amazing players you know guys like you know cam hayward a guy who's been man of the year a guy who's impacted so many people i got to talk to him for a little while uh you know before you know during this process and and then obviously uh you know mr tj wad himself you know a guy who really should be defensive player i don't know how many times i don't know maybe his third fourth time could have won it um but just uh tremendous athlete tremendous player a tremendous competitor um guys like minka um you know george pickens and just so many other great players along the way um got to see some guys like fryer muth and and uh and somalu in there and just you know just it's a great place to be uh you know grateful for the opportunity to be able to get after it and uh you know and and do what we what we what we came here to do and that's to win football games look at him russell wilson already kissing everybody's backside hey tj wad he should have won defensive player of the year about i don't know three four five six seven eight nine times oh yeah that's what russell wilson does good everybody's gonna want to know what russell wilson does out on the field and that's most important and so as of right now today this moment this second russell wilson is the only quarterback that the pittsburgh steelers have on their roster why because after the signing was official and after russell wilson held his press conference thank you god that he didn't say anything all that let's just say corny he didn't say anything all that ridiculous he didn't give us any uh gigantic sound bite to run with for the next uh you know five years kenny pickett basically said i don't want to be here yeah you heard that the pittsburgh steelers brought in russell wilson someone who won a super bowl and kenny pickett said i don't want no part of this i want a fresh start and what better place to go to for a fresh start as an nfl quarterback than the philadelphia eagles what the steelers traded kenny pickett to the philadelphia eagles kenny pickett and a 2024 fourth rounder next month goes to philadelphia in exchange for a 2024 third round pick and two 2025 seventh round picks kenny pickett just got to town man kenny pickett in two seasons as a starter basically just about two full seasons almost as a starter spain went 14 and 10 it's 24 starts if you can do math and he had what you can consider to just flat b a mediocre tenure as quarterback 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions you can call that mediocre you can call it average you can venture off into just saying hey his performance was just ass and i remember this is the this is the hometown hero this is the man who ultimately spent the better part of what six college football seasons not that i want to say thank you covid but as a result of covid this man spent six seasons at pit he became the pittsburgh steelers starting quarterback as recently as this past year mike tomlin just defended him at every stretch and every turn until he blew out his ankle and then he never saw the field again as mason rudolph took over by the way mason rudolph is still a free agent would him surprise me if mason rudolph ended right back with the pittsburgh steelers but kenny pickett quote-unquote could not take the heat so he got the heat so he got out of the kitchen do you think and let's let's all be real here kenny pickett is not a dummy kenny pickett knows where he is was kenny pickett going to beat out russell willson as the starting quarterback the answer is no pittsburgh steelers didn't bring russell wilson in to create controversy as he's a backup the pittsburgh steelers did not bring in russell wilson to be a distraction as kenny pickett has the starting job you would have to be a complete idiot to think that these two men were going to go out there and have a equal competition was never going to happen and so yeah kurt cousins excuse me i'm thinking about atlanta kenny pickett he left now to me it makes all the sense in the world if he went to another team not the eagles hey chris pop quiz unless jaylen hurts just uh combusts how many snaps is kenny pickett gonna get oh um i wouldn't say many they'll i think they'll wheel out a hurt jaylen hurts before they put kenny pickett in the game kenny kenny pickett is only gonna play if jaylen hurts can't move jaylen hurts might be playing on one damn leg they will put jaylen hurts into the football game before they decide to allow kenny pickett to step onto the field and i've seen everything and kenny pickett growing up in jersey and is an eagles fan and now he gets a chance to play for his hometown team he's not gonna play and if kenny pickett plays it's gonna be in dire circumstances and so yeah you wanted to move on you wanted a fresh start like do something to deserve it you know mike tomlin has been very clear in past seasons about wanting to have players who want to be there i know kenny pickett wasn't happy coming off of his surgery when mason rudolph held on to the starting job but what have you done with your 14 touchdowns excuse me i've given him too much credit what have you done with your 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions that screams out i need to move on and i need to move to the eagles of all teams a squad that's paying jaylen hurts 255 million dollars over the next five years come on russell wilson is he's signed to the steelers for one season let me say it again we say it again russell wilson is signed to the steelers for one season is kenny pickett think he's gonna have a better chance to play or start in pittsburgh or in philadelphia a catastrophic injury would end jaylen hurts russell wilson well he could bomb this year the relationship could bomb russell wilson could be gone and you might get your chance in your opportunity but this is the time this is the error this is the thought process of the modern athlete you go forward you get stumped and you decide to pack your bags and move on kenny pickett selected in the 2022 draft 20th overall kenny pickett is already gone and it's because he doesn't want to compete he doesn't want to have a false competition with russell wilson well damn it there will be no competition with jaylen hurts at least he doesn't have to move too far west side of pennsylvania over to the east congratulations kenny pickett you're gone it's the jr sport reshow here with you on cbs sports radio hope you've had a tremendous friday we have a lot more to get into listen folks mike vrabel is in a new spot kenan allen is in a new spot jawan howard has gotten the boot no longer coaching michigan dion sanders puts in his two cents as to where he wants his son to play or not play when he enters into the nfl we're going to talk more about russell wilson and also his new teammate and patrick queen marquees brown has a new home with the kansas city chiefs and oh yeah that's right aaron donald one of the most dominant defensive players of all time in the nfl aaron donald hangs it up the phone number 855-2124 cbs me i'm everywhere at gr sport brief when we come back on the other side of the break we're is the jr sport reshow here on cbs sports radio 855-212 for cbs that's eight five five two one two four cbs we opened up the show a few minutes ago on the prior break by talking about some of the going ons in pittsburgh russell wilson officially introduced as the new quarterback of the pittsburgh steelers and then not too long after russell wilson was introduced kenny pickett was traded to philadelphia reports say that kenny pickett wanted a fresh start but kenny pickett did not want to be there anymore and let's be real i don't know if he's getting a much fresher start by playing behind jaylen hertz who's one of the best quarterbacks in the nfl certainly you would you would think he's gonna bounce back from how the the team collapsed last season and kenny pickett is gonna be a backup by the way so good luck on that one looks like he just wants to run away from the situation but look i don't know all the intricacies of what went down in pittsburgh a team that went all in and drafting this man 20th overall two years ago and now they've traded him apparently at his at his request his agent's request we'll see what happens russell wilson may bomb this first year with steelers and he may cost mike tomlin it'll give him his first season where he ends up below 500. i'm not wishing that on the steelers i'm just saying it a little bit in jest i think there'll be a good match let's see what happens somebody else moving on did not expect to see this months ago when mike vrabel was fired as the head coach of the tennessee titans i thought that mike vrabel would get a another job coach i thought that mike vrabel would get a another job coaching did not happen i thought that we would see mike vrabel on television i don't know back on the nfl network on nbc or what have you it did not happen and so today we actually learned that mike vrabel is going to be coaching in the nfl not as a head coach but as an assistant you know what more specifically mike vrabel is going to be a personnel and coaching consultant for the cleveland browns what that's what i said when i saw the news i said what he's from ohio played at the ohio state university knocked people silly as a linebacker the same way he did it for the damn new england patriots this is a dude who just lost his job it's considered one of the best coaches in the entire nfl i think he only got the boot because the inexperience of their owner and amy adams i think they couldn't handle his personality we heard this story he said he was too intimidating i think he just told people like it was he's like yeah i know y'all own the team but i got more experience and i'm more familiar with winning than anybody here and i don't think they can handle it and they fired him and so now they bring in a novice head coach and brian callahan who comes on over as the offensive coordinator of another ohio team the cincinnati bangles and so mike vrabel will be a sounding board for kevin stefanski kevin stefanski last time i checked this man is walking around with a coach of the year award does he need advice everybody needs advice right you know if this was a lesser coach i would tell you that mike vrabel was here just to take his job when things hit the skids if this was nick suriani who's basically his head is almost on the chopping block if the eagles don't have success i say hey mike vrabel is here waiting in the wings but apparently mike vrabel has been working with the cleveland browns for months now even working with them hanging out with them giving them advice during the nfl combine out in indianapolis and if we want to go even deeper yeah him and kevin stefanski get along the defensive coordinator jim schwartz yeah you might remember him from the lions unfortunately jim schwartz at one point in time he was an advisor to mike vrabel when mike vrabel was still with the tennessee titans remember mike vrabel started with the titans back in 2018 even took this team to an afc championship game against the patriots where i had to go what the hell are they doing here oh it's because of uh derek henry but then also because of the brain of mike vrabel which is just a damn shame that he got fired that he got the boot from the tennessee titans because mike vrabel is a master of clock manipulation his strategies and how he works late game situations it's just genius he does and comes up with things that you wouldn't think of now jim schwartz i told you he was a consultant for mike vrabel seasons ago he talked about this late last year during the press conference jim schwartz basically said look this is what makes mike vrabel so special you know he's a former player but that you know that that that's not the whole story he's um he's very consistent in his message he has a philosophy he sticks through it um you know he um you know doesn't waver when it comes to you know the the wins of the nfl i guess you'd say you know the wind starts blowing one way he doesn't change direction and go another way and uh i think that's probably the the biggest thing he's an excellent leader he's a fantastic game manager i learned i learned a really a lot from raves when it came to dealing with the team and you know in game management look mike vrabel just he got to be bored right he's like i don't want to sit on television and yell with a bunch of idiots obviously i don't have a head coaching job i'm not taking a gig as a coordinator why the hell would i do that so i can be chastised i'm not doing that mike vrabel is doing what every american should do be a consultant let me tell you something being a consultant is one of the best jobs in the country you get paid you give your input put in your two cents but then you're not responsible for any of the final decision making you can consult with as many people as possible but then when the you know what hits the table you get paid you get paid you get paid you get the fan nobody looks at you the consultant they look at the person making the decisions so congratulations to mike ravel i know joining the uh the cleveland brown sometimes is a head scratcher and i know now that now they got to sean watson after baker mayfield helped take him to the postseason so now they're a reputable franchise especially with that defense they have some stability i get it the man went home good for him maybe mike ravel will provide some advice to the sean watson maybe he'll tell jamis winston you know maybe every now and then you should shut up mike ravel a big name a big time assistant a big time confidant for kevin stefanski and the cleveland browns if only he was around to tell haslam hey listen man i don't think it's a good idea to give uh all this guaranteed money to the sean watson i actually think that's a bad idea but we're a little too late in that i still expect mike ravel if there's the right opportunity the right position i expect mike ravel to be back coaching next year great job being a consultant it's the jr sport re-show here with you on cbs sports radio not a bad job being here hey chris you ever got money for consultant not yet right nope not yet you if you were a consultant what would you be consulting on it's a good question um i wouldn't be mad about being a little catching consultant you know help kind of like a catching trainer i used to play catcher as a kid and i still love the game of baseball so i feel like that'd be pretty fun so you want to be a coach i already am a coach oh where the hell you coaching i'm a um i volunteer at my uh former high school the uh baseball program there my dad is the head coach there and i come down when i'm not working and i work with the catchers work with the first baseman sometimes the outfielders it's a lot of fun i enjoy it a lot oh look at you oh okay the more you know i got a question did you catch growing up you're a catcher that was my main position i was a catcher for 14 years how the hell you squatting back there for so long well you squat back there for so long because you're squatting in the weight room oh okay no taking because i think about squat i got a bad knee i can't squat if i squat my knee's gonna kill me for it okay don't take it because if i squat this there's no getting back up like good stuff crystal more you know what what that batting average look like i was a hair under 300 but my best batting average ever was 348 during summer ball whoa excuse me whoa whoa is is act ack is there right i'm here act you hear this did you know that did you notice no this this uh this brings a whole new chris hestellite here i don't know we're gonna have to we're gonna have to go into the record books and check this look i think we we're gonna have to go into the record books and check this look i think we well we got a modern j joe mauer over here exactly exactly batting 348 and only one home run in 40 years of playing baseball though there you go there was the downside i was much more of a just get on base kind of hit or do the dirty work uh the one home run was absolutely tanked so i was happy about that it went over the fence or was it inside it was a 315 foot fence i think i hit it about 375 380 it was crushed what happened if you hit 340 you don't have to worry about the home runs yeah your defense is good you just keep doing that yeah i was more concerned about getting uh getting my guys from third home i was more concerned about that a lot of singles what are you doing singles doubles singles and doubles mostly the occasional triple i was like a runaway beer truck on the bases oh you got you got thrown out a couple times huh oh i got a little greedy at times trying to stretch a double into a triple and then i quickly realized i wasn't that guy oh well listen man if i was batting 340 and knew i was going to get on base that much then uh yeah i'd be i'd be trying to get some extra bases in as well good stuff didn't know you were out here coaching you're already ahead of the game it's been fun man it's been a lot of fun i'm sure it's very rewarding as well well thank you for sharing that chris never too late you can be a consultant absolutely you get that money on the side and then you don't have to be on the field eight five five two one two four cbs that's eight five five two one two four cbs chris is coaching ravel is coaching in some form we're gonna take a break when we come back i'm gonna tell you about somebody who is not coaching anymore because he got the boot it's the jr sport reshow here on cbs sports radio oh should we start this show yeah i'm down just buying a car and carvana first oh for real yeah it's super convenient i already got pre-qualified in two minutes all i had to do is answer a few questions oh that's helpful and point where things matter in college basketball and baseball season is on deck greatest three words in the english language pitchers and catchers we have some of the best voices come on and explain what matters or what makes an upset like ryan does nine over eight no that's not an upset no yeah it is but and if you're lucky i might just tell you about my search for discounted sleep pants or my worries about what my dog just ate listen on the odyssey app or wherever you get your podcasts you're listening to the jr sport brief on cbs sports radio it's the jr sport brief show here on cbs sports radio 855-212-4 cbs that's 855-212-4 cbs before we went to break we talked about mike vrabel new job as a consultant with the cleveland browns to start the show we talked about kenny pickett now being a member of the philadelphia eagles he's been traded from the steelers little cross-state trade as russell wilson is now a member of the steelers and kenny pickett allegedly reportedly wanted a fresh start there's a famous basketball player turned coach i guess he's also going to be looking for a fresh start and his name his name is jawan howard as you just heard from rich ackerman jawan howard got the boot he is no longer the head coach of the michigan wolverines now this is one of the jobs that you get and you want to go ahead and keep the job forever i get it not everybody can be b-line and you just run around and have the job forever jawan howard has been coaching the wolverines since 2019 i feel like he just got the job yesterday i feel like probably because of covid it feels like tom just kind of moved past and maybe all of us just had two to three years wiped out of our damn lives that's what it feels like but jawan howard after an eight and 24 season and not making the ncaa tournament last year which sounds ridiculous for the michigan wolverines jawan howard has been given jawan howard has been given the boot and i know unfortunately he had to deal with his heart issue in the heart surgery but it's real bad when the most i would say memorable thing about your tenure was trying to punch the living daylights out of another coach chris you just said you coach and coaching on a youth level and you played they're helicopter parents out here have you ever witnessed any of these uh these beefs the parents acting a little too crazy you ever witnessed one of these things i've witnessed it as a player but not as a coach well do tell what happened it was it's always just summer baseball parents that i was maybe 14 or 15 we were playing up in a tournament in rhode island and it was parents from the same team bickering at each other we were playing some team from the providence area up in rhode island and we're standing there these little kids from new york just like what the hell is going on here and it was it got a little ugly and we're like whoa like this is this is crazy well what do you mean what are they arguing about do you know have any idea we had no clue because it was all the way on the other side of the field from where our dugout was and we're just like what in the world is going on over there yeah well let me ask this is an ignorant question i'm not hanging out at kids uh kids games is there alcohol that you can't there's no alcohol out of kids game unless you bring it yourself right yeah they don't sell it at games like that unless you're pre-gaming in the uh in the parking lot before the game but if you're a parent pre-gaming your kids 14 u summer baseball game what are you doing oh what well i sound terrible it's not a good idea to drink before a kid's game a 14 year high school right yeah you're going you're either fit yeah you're finishing up eighth grade going into ninth grade what time are these games what time of the day are these games it could be anywhere from 8 30 a.m to 8 30 at night okay and so you're telling me that as an adult you know maybe i get it if it's the game is at nine o'clock in the morning you don't want somebody you know putting bellies in their coffee maybe you do you know you're not going to have a jack and coke at 8 30 in the morning but i don't know if this is like a four o'clock game you know maybe the parents can't have like a glass of wine or something before they watch the kids i mean if that's what they want to do that's what they want to do i wouldn't encourage it i think that would be an embarrassment like imagine i'm the kid on the field and i see my parents acting like belligerent jerks it's like come on now oh no no i'm not talking about the jerk part i'm just saying have a drink before the game like what you're gonna sit down how long are these games the kids game what is it a baseball game for a kid is what two hours probably about two hours since it's seven inning games so i'm gonna sit down outside in the summertime for two hours just wanna watch my son my daughter go out there and play why can't i have a beer before i get there why can't i have a beer while i'm sitting in the stands that's not a good look i would say that's not a good look oh wow okay thanks for letting me know no taking i didn't think that there'd be anything wrong with having a beer at your kid's game but i guess you'd look like a drunk right i guess no i think it just sets a bad example at that point like if you're bringing it in like near the field it just looks bad oh wow i got some i got some more lessons to learn here okay thank you i learned something thank you chris you taught me something don't don't bring a beer to a uh a 14 year old's game makes sense makes sense you don't want to look like the jerk makes sense all the sense in the world well anyway speaking of jerks jawana howard the most memorable thing that happened at his tenure being the head coach of the michigan wolverines was trying to punch the daylights out of another coach you might remember this michigan lost to wisconsin 77 to 63 this was two years ago and jawana howard got an argument with greg guard and he was not happy typically you have the post game handshake everybody's shaking hands and everybody goes about their business except for jawana howard wanted to throw a punch i want you to take a listen to this courtesy of cbs badgers win at 77 to 63 and jawana howard not going over immediately to shake hands now he's gonna get in the line interesting finish here 77 oh see and they're going at it howard and guard are not happy right now as the two of them continue to have words we told you jawad howard was not happy about that timeout and jawad howard just threw a right hand and now we got a scrum we have a scrum in madison players are pushing and shoving this is an ugly scene this is an ugly scene oh my god trying to get separated and there's no doubt it all stands guard didn't appreciate it they get locked up howard with a finger right in his face and then the players start to chirp as well and that's where howard grabbed one of the wisconsin assistants joe gravenhoft former wisconsin player and it spilled out into this yeah jawana howard was suspended after that what a shock right you can't go around punching people in the head and you're jawana howard you ain't no small man you played power forward in the nba you played for the wolverines and the champion i mean come on bro you can't just just punch people what type of college head coach is that a sad day for our former nba players who coached i mean jerry stackhouse got fired yesterday head coach from vanderbilt forgot he was there uh jawana howard i guess it was also easy to forget that he was coaching at the wolverines because the wolverines have sucked and now i guess maybe possibly he'll go right back to the nba or maybe jawana howard will sit around and and count his money because it's not that he needs to coach i'm sure he needs to do something it's not like jawan howard is an elderly man jawan howard this dude has only got to be in his what he's about 50 years old you got to find something to do sheesh you win some you lose some and not not a good not a good thing you think about michigan and how the fat five were labeled in the 90s and and now you got all these years later 30 years later jawan howard is out here trying to fight folks i never saw coach k try to fight anybody well i did see bobby knight he tried to fight choke punch kick slap and bobby knight tried it all god rest his soul but jawan howard gonna have to find something to do it's not easy just just transitioning from being a player to an assistant coach to taking the reins where you just have the final say and you put in the last word and we all know go ask nick saben go go ask coach k a matter of fact how difficult it is right now to actually bring players in and coach at the college level being the fact that these players right now they all want to get paid you know i'm sure someone even of the stature of jawan howard couldn't necessarily bring in and do what he wanted to do because it comes down basically to the to the dollars and cents how much am i going to get paid where's the money coming from and what's my playing time going to look like hey college basketball is no different than football than that there's just a lot of changes going on and now jawan howard happens to be one of them eight five five two one two four cbs that's eight five five two one two four cbs you know chris i asked this question to hickey uh yesterday i asked it to you when you think about the march madness tournament and we have selection sunday coming up are you into it you filling out a bracket you're just watching the games how do you feel about this oh i've filled out a bracket for as long as i can remember that's the thrill of it have you won any money yet no sadly not i have not i have yet to win my bracket group ever so tell me about this thrill that you get from filling out the bracket i enjoy it so much because i i pay attention to college basketball throughout the year i'm not an avid watcher of it but i start to ramp up attention as conference tournaments slowly approach and i also keep an eye on the mid majors because i love and i mean love when a mid major school that most people probably haven't heard of comes out and upsets a blue blood in round one the thrill of seeing those kids who worked so hard to get to that point especially if they have a tournament drought to go out there and beat a team like a duke or a kentucky or a unc or heck unbc beating virginia you can't help but just feel awesome for those guys you telling me about like butler years ago right from perfect example yeah so it seemed like butler and we see where that where their former coach is at now he's pretty much running the boston celtics so yeah now i love i love the games and i start watching like most people really starting to pay more attention when we get out of football season and then we roll into the conference tournaments and then the next thing you know is boom it's it's selection sunday on the other hand i do not fill out a bracket i've never well have i maybe one time i filled out a bracket i'm i just want to watch the games like i got no skin in it i don't get into no office pools i don't expect to win any money i just want to see the teams play i'm also upset by the way that they're thinking about expanding the tournament but i think i've made that point very clear over the past several days but look what does it matter what i think they want to make money i guess the first four isn't enough they want to add additional teams and i just got a quote-unquote grin and bear it but march madness is upon us and uh jawan howard he's going to be watching from at home just like the rest of us no longer the head coach of the michigan wolverines
