Yep, and I happen to be JR. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Our producer, super producer and host, Dave Sheppard.

He's holding it down for us on the boards, handling all the fun technical stuff in New York City. We got a lot of listeners all over North America. I appreciate you. 300 stations all over North America. I appreciate you.

Cities that I know large and cities that I don't know and everybody in between. You can always listen on your local affiliate. Shout outs to all those local engineers and producers making sure that we are on the air. And thank you so much to you, the listeners at work, at home, on the roads, whatever the hell you're doing. Thank you.

You can also listen on the free Odyssey app, Sirius XM Channel 158. And if you got a smart speaker, ask it to play CBS Sports Radio. A busy, busy, busy night. You've been able to crown a new World Series champion. It's a team that is winning it.

So it has won its first championship in its 63 year history. It's the Texas Rangers. Tonight, the Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, the final score five to nothing. And Texas wins this World Series four games to one. Corey Seeger is named your MVP of the World Series. This is his second MVP award, and he now does it with two different teams. First with the Dodgers in 2020.

Obviously this go round with the Texas Rangers. And the only other man in Major League Baseball to do this was Reggie Jackson, winning two MVPs, two separate teams. Also tonight, unfortunately, we learned of the passing of Bobby Knight at 83 years old, three championships with Indiana. We also know for all of his accomplishments as a basketball coach, it also came with a lot of controversy. And so to get some personal perspective, not only did we talk about Bobby Knight and his accomplishments, good and bad, some I wouldn't call the bad accomplishments, but we did speak to Scott Farrell, a former host here on CBS Sports Radio, now host on Sports Grid, who said that Bobby Knight was like a father to him. We also spoke to former head coach in the NBA and former player for Indiana, won a championship under Bobby Knight in 1981. Randy Whitman came through and joined us as well.

And then we talked about a whole hell of a lot. World Series, obviously Bobby Knight right now, the Lakers and Clippers are battling it out in overtime. And then even this evening, the Boston Celtics decided to put a true beat down on the Indiana Pacers 155 to 104.

That is a massive beat down. Boston shot 57 percent from the field. They went 20 of 35 on threes.

Jason Tatum had 30 and he did it in only 27 minutes. 155 points is just completely obnoxious. And then, of course, tonight, a Wednesday night into Thursday morning, I gave you a new top six list. We took a look at some of the most dysfunctional teams in sports. And just to give you a quick recap, at number six, I gave you the Patriots. Number five, I gave you the Knicks. Number four, I gave you the Michigan Wolverines. And number three, I gave you the Padres. At number two, I gave you the Raiders.

And at number one, I gave you the Oakland soon-to-be Vegas Athletics. Yes, if you want to hear the full explanations, that's also very simple. You can hit rewind on the free Odyssey app as LeBron James catches a alley-oop from Austin Reeves and slams it down as LeBron James basically stares at the rim. This man makes no damn sense. Out here playing in overtime, dunking and flying.

This man makes no sense. I hope he can stay healthy. What an amazing story that his entire career is. He's going to get his just due sooner than later. 8-5-5, 2-1-2 for CBS.

Speaking of just due, LeBron, we don't know when he'll get his. But let me tell you this, the Texas Rangers, they got theirs. I told you tonight they win the World Series. Five runs to nothing for Arizona.

This game didn't really have any scoring, any type of scoring, until late. The Diamondbacks were able to threaten at certain points. Galland for the Diamondbacks was actually pitching a perfect game through just about four. And then, well, he gave up a run in the seventh.

I want you to take a listen to this. As they got things going, all of this audio is courtesy of the Rangers radio network. Mike Garver came through an RBI single in the seventh.

Leo won. Garver swings, hits it up the middle. Base knocked into center.

Segar scores. Carter being held at third as Thomas fires it back into the infield. RBI single for Mitch Garver. And the Rangers score first here in the seventh and lead it 1-0. Jonah Haim came through in the ninth with a two-run single, pushing the lead to 3-0.

Crowd trying to get behind seawall. Two on, nobody out. The third baseman plays in, and the pitch is swung on. Ground ball right side.

It's through a base hit. Racing around third base is Young, and he will score. And the ball gets by all the way to the 4-13 sign.

Here comes Lowe. He scores. Into third base is Jonah Haim. And the Rangers lead 3-0 in the top of the ninth. The ball misplayed out in right center field. And two runs score. I told you the final score was five to nothing, right?

Let's listen to the blast that put the final two runs on the board. The 0-1. Simeon lines one deep to left center field.

That ball is way back, and that ball is history. A two-run homer for Marcus Simeon. It's 5-0 Rangers in the ninth. A blistering line drive that never came down and left center field. Marcus with five RBIs yesterday, won the day before. Coming alive for the Rangers at just the right time.

You know what? Let's listen to the final call. The final out of the World Series. The final out of the 2023 season. Two balls, two strikes. Spores, kicks, and fires.

He struck him out looking. It's over. It's over. The Rangers have won the World Series. Ranger fans, you're not dreaming. The Rangers are the World Series champions. After 52 years in Texas, 63 years of the franchise, the wait is over, and the celebration has begun. All of the audio courtesy of the Rangers Radio Network.

Now do you want, I do want you to hear this. Corey Seeger named your your MVP for the 2023 World Series. He was able to win MVP in 2020 with the Dodgers. He spoke to Fox after the game. He was happy to help deliver a World Series championship to Texas.

Listen. It's a lot of credit to them. A lot of credit to CY.

A lot of credit to our ownership, you know, on having a view and bringing in people and it's just, it's truly incredible, you know, to have this group behind us and to be that or to be World Champs now, man, it's crazy. He finished the postseason with the 318 average, six doubles, six home runs, 15 walks, 12 RBIs. Half of those RBIs were against Arizona and the Texas Rangers, they went 11-0 on the road here in the postseason. That's what happens when you come in.

We got two teams basically sitting around on a wild card before they even progress. Someone who walked out for his couch to come out here and manage this team is Bruce Bochy. He also spoke to Fox and he talked about being thrilled to get this experience in his first year.

It's unreal. I was sitting on a recliner there in Nashville and just enjoying myself when he called me and I tell you what, I'm so honored to ride with these guys. They, they inspire me with how resilient they've been but to get this call, be part of this, I know how blessed I am.

I can't think these guys enough. Yeah, no magic here on this side for the Arizona Diamondbacks. We know what took place back in 2001 against the Yankees. The Diamondbacks have a bright future. I mean, even one of their top prospects wasn't even out there.

It's not just Corbin Carroll and Tory Lovello. He understands just how great of an experience this has been even in the loss. I just got done telling the guys that I'm so proud of what they've done and we have to step back for a minute and and tell ourselves that we've done a lot of really amazing things this year and then we got on this really fun ride through the course of the postseason and you just never want it to stop. It's like your favorite roller coaster that you never want to get off of and you want to be the last team standing and you want to be in the middle of a pile and have everybody pile on top of you. That's that's the best feeling in the world. Best feeling in the world.

I can't imagine. World Series champs. Let's see what the Diamondbacks do. I have a feeling that they're not going anywhere. I'm not so sure certain that they're going to progress or move forward get back to a World Series. It is not easy but they should definitely be a competitive team moving forward especially when you take a look at some of the the competition in their own division. They have some problems. I just gave you a top six list of dysfunctional teams.

It should be a little easier when you think about the NL West. 855-212-4CBS. It's 855-212-4CBS. Allen is here from Toronto. You're on the JR Sport Brief Show.

Yeah hi JR. I agree with you 100% with the Oakland Athletics but the other five I disagree with you because the Kansas City Royals. They're way way worse than any of the other two.

Don't get me wrong. The other teams they're very dysfunctional but nothing like the Kansas City Royals. Since they won the World Series in 2015 they've only been to the post. They haven't even been to the postseason eight years in a row. They've been below 500 and I had them penciled in this year for 74 and 88. Nine games better than 2022 and instead they were 56 and 106 their worst record since 2003. The year that Tony Pena walked out and if I'm the manager, lucky I'm not the manager, I would have walked out too. It gets to a point of how much more can you take and I had them penciled in for 74 and 88 because of the free agent signings they had.

They signed Ryan Yarbrough and Jordan Lyles as the pitching staff and Bobby Wood Jr. and Minnie Pasquantino. Well he is a thing Alan. Alan. They're way worse than any of these other teams that you're talking about.

Hey Alan. This is a top six list of dysfunctional teams not irrelevant ones okay? They're not relevant.

They're dysfunctional. Yeah no E relevant. E relevant. Okay.

All right thank you Alan. Appreciate you for calling from Toronto. Yeah man we got a lot of ass teams out here. I can go down a list and name teams that are a bunch of losers or relevant. Man I'm not sitting down and watching no Kansas City Royals game for the reasons that he just said because they suck. If I want to sit down and watch a good game I ain't going to sit down and watch no Royals come on. Just because a team is bad that's because they're awful doesn't mean they're dysfunctional. Not everybody needs to sign up and hang out in in Raiders territory but come on give them a break. Kansas City Royals they're not dysfunctional they just suck.

That's it. 855-212-4 CBS that's 855-212-4 CBS. The Los Angeles Lakers just beat the Clippers in overtime 130 to 125. Just even watching this game here in in overtime here in the studio LeBron James is is nuts.

He makes no sense. One of the big storylines for the season is how he's going to be able to just last through the course of the year. LeBron James tonight 42 minutes 35 points 11 rebounds seven assists four of eight from downtown.

Austin Reeves threw him a ridiculous alley-oop. You wouldn't think LeBron James has lost an inch on his vertical leap. Is he the same player? No. Same athlete?

No. But he's still better than a lot of the guys out there which is just it's nutty. He is defying time in a ridiculous way. I hope it can last. 855-212-4 CBS John is here from Virginia. John you're live on the radio. Hey JR how you doing this evening?

I'm good going ahead. I got a question for you. What are your thoughts on uh Riverboat Ron? I think that this man is going to be out of a job at the end of the season. I mean they're already getting rid of players. I think he's going to be next to go.

I do too. What do you think about Eric the enemy taking over as head coach? I'm not so sure that he's he's going to get that chance of that opportunity.

I mean why not it you're asking me why not? Yeah I mean you don't think you don't think he's qualified? It's not a matter of thinking he's being qualified. I think for the same reason that Ron Rivera will be given the boot. Ultimately when you got an owner who comes in typically they want a clean house and so I don't think it's a it's a given that he's going to be able to stick around especially if they get rid of the general manager which I think is also likely. It's a pecking order that is you know? Yeah all right JR I've been a long time I said I'm 70 years old I've been a long time fan since I was six years old and anyway well thank you JR it's been a pleasure listening to you.

Well it's a pleasure speaking to you. Thank you John for calling from VA. Yeah the fact is when when you get when you get rid of folks that you get rid of the GM. I think Mayu might be gone. I think Ron Rivera might be gone. Like people want to bring in their own folks and so it's not so much an indictment on Eric B enemy and whether or not he's qualified. I don't know if he's qualified because I never seen him coach before. I know we all heard the stories about him interviewing and interviewing poorly. These are things that are said.

I have no idea. I just don't believe he's going to get the chance of the opportunity especially if the GM gets the boot as well. Keyin calling from San Diego you're on CBS Sports Radio. Hey JR yeah I agree with your take on the Padres. I'm a die-hard Padres fan but we have a general manager this is just this this dynasty with the recent general manager going on our fifth head coach looking to hire our fifth head coach and it's it's miserable here we could have 800 million dollars payroll and nothing nothing will be going for us but you know I'll keep watching I'll keep putting my seat my butt down in the seat and watch. It appears that they can't even pay the payroll my man.

Yeah I know I know it. It's a wow world thank you Keyin for calling from San Diego. Yeah AJ Preller may not be around to to see any future changes uh with the team. It's uh it's sad what's going on. The Padres look to be one of these teams on the up and up they're quiet and brought in so much talent. Manny Machado gets a contract then they trade for Soto and they they have they have they have name brand pitchers out there you have Fernando Tatis and then it ends up being one disappointment after the next. From the injuries to the suspensions to the attitude problems beef and management and now we're finding out that they have this gigantic payroll that they can't even sustain they have to borrow money just to pay the players. Wow. Wow.

They're a disaster. It's the JR Sport Reshow here with you on CBS Sports Radio eight five five two one two four CBS. It's eight five five two one two four CBS.

We're gonna take a break on the other side. I I do want to get to more of your calls. I want you to hear from some of the the individuals that we had earlier on in the show that came on as guests following the passing of Bobby Knight.

Former head coach and player at Indiana Randy Whitman he joined us as well as a voice you might be familiar with Scott Farrell joined us had a personal relationship almost father's son with Bobby Knight as well. We got so much more to do before I roll out it's the JR Sport Brief show CBS Sports Radio. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief on CBS Sports Radio. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief on CBS Sports Radio. JR first of all I gotta tell you something I have been blind for 40 years now.

I lost my sight when I was 19 years old. I've been listening to sports radio for 40 years because it's more informative than television to me. You my friend are the most realistic broadcaster I have ever heard in my life and I thank you. Call in now at eight five five two one two four CBS. It is the JR Sport Brief show here with you on CBS Sports Radio. Thank you for the calm words and compliments. Thank you thank you thank you. Here's the deal busy busy night we we spent the first hour of the show talking about the passing of Bob Knight 83 years old three championships with Indiana a fifth all-time in coaching wins this man also won an NCAA title as a player with Ohio State 1960 team USA coach five final fours hall of fame's and we know about the negatives we know about the the chairs being thrown we know about the chokings and the bull whips and and on and on and on when it comes to the basketball there's there's no disputing you know what he was able to accomplish as a leader they called this guy the general coached at army before he went ahead and coached for Indiana and then we know he he got the boot and he went over coaching at Texas Tech I can't even call it complicated a complicated legacy it was colored in both ways there was the positives there were the negatives and just there were the the quote the quotes and the comments that he he shared as well and I don't think there's one more famous than this and uh I don't want to say very appropriate but he talked about when he's gone I want you to listen to this you probably heard it a million times when my time on earth is gone and my activities here are past I want they bury me upside down and my critics can kiss my yeah so tonight we we walk through his accomplishments we certainly talked about a lot of the the controversy and comments surrounding uh bob knight but then we also spoke with two individuals who knew him uh very well you know this man very well he's scott furrell and right now he's a host on on sports grid furrell coast to coast and he was a young radio broadcaster getting into the business at indiana out at bloomington and was able to develop a relationship with bob knight and scott came on through and he told us right out of the gate he knew this he said bob knight oh yeah he was a badass you don't mess with him bro he was six six three hundred pounds he played at ohio state he meant business he was intimidating when he started cussing the whole room just absolutely froze dead in their tracks and i was like 18 19 20 years old watching this going this is the greatest thing i've ever seen and then i learned at a young age to shut up uh and to let him do what he's doing and never ask him anything randy whitman joined us as well won a championship under bob knight in 1981 went on to play in the nba for about a decade was the head coach of the wizards as recently as a couple of years ago 2016 17 give or take also coaching the timberwolves and the cavaliers randy whitman coach joined us and he talked about how special it was just playing for bob knight being a player for him i would never there was never a thought of ever not doing what i did or or second thoughts of of playing there i mean i i have uh children of my own and i and i would let him coach my children i mean what he instills in you as a young boy going to college at 17 18 years old and what you develop there under his tutelage not from just a basketball standpoint but from a life standpoint is the things that people just don't understand yeah well there's a lot of folks who who did not know him personally and this was this was also said by both scott and then also uh coach whitman who joined us is that hey yeah there were a lot that people didn't know about him and what he did uh is his uh charitable contributions personal relationships that he fostered and the fact that yeah there were things that he's done that he certainly did regret uh just ain't nobody perfect and this dude as far as i see he was able to really live on on both sides of the line in in extremes he contributed a lot to folks in their lives and he also had plenty of controversy surrounding him as well you know we played that clip about critics kissing his ass like it's over it's done like when is the last time anybody as far as i'm concerned has criticized bob knight you know he's really been out of the public view since he retired from broadcasting on espn ironically being a broadcaster knowing that he throughout his career seemingly had a little bit of a disdain for broadcasters at one point said that they were two steps away from being prostitutes but we haven't heard too much as he's been in declining health and so i think people accept his legacy for the good and and for the bad and it's like a lot of human beings except for his it really lived and existed in two very different extremes can i can i share something very quickly with you sure so um this was when i first started here on cbs sports radio and it was a situation where i needed to really book a big guest to kind of prove myself and i went after guys like uh uh i would say like mid-tier guys um but the reality is bob knight i just happened to get a phone number i got really lucky he called me back and we must have talked for like an hour on the phone because um he granted me that time he granted me that access i called him coach knight when i got on the phone with him and he taught me in that hour conversation about fishing about baseball about you know the army and uh i'm forever grateful for him jr he just was an incredibly kind human being it's not really talked about when it comes to bob knight and he couldn't have been more lighthearted he couldn't have been more funny and uh he was a really good man that i don't think he showed everybody and i'm very grateful for having uh talked with him yeah it's uh it's just just you you never know you know i've learned in a lot of cases to to only judge people especially when you hear so many stories you judge people on on your own personal interactions with them and we can certainly look at all the negatives but that that doesn't paint the full picture a lot of people man ain't nobody running around that's that's perfect i'm not saying that this guy and bob knight should be absolved from a lot of things that he did but man you you can't take away and you never know the full breadth of what somebody else is doing behind the scenes as well as shepa i appreciate you for sharing that it's the jr sport re-show here with you on cbs sports radio i'm going to get more of your calls in before we are forced to roll out the number here it's eight five five two one two four cbs uh outside of the passing of bob knight we know that we were able to crown a new world series champ we got a lot of basketball going on tonight we got a lot of dysfunction going on in the nfl we just got a lot going on you're listening to the jr sport brief on cbs sports radio you're listening to the jr sport brief on cbs sports radio jr i gotta say you are the smartest guy in radio you are you know what if i can give you a sp tonight you deserve a sp for this top six list call in now at eight five five two one two four cbs well thank you man thanks i got enough paperweights at home though who uses papers anyway anyway it's the jr sport re-show on cbs sports radio congratulations again to the texas rangers winning the world series the first time in their 63 year history the boston celtics go out there and sure as hell have themselves just a ridiculous night boston celtics wake up and say well let's go out there and score 155 points the celtics beat the pacers 155 to 104. i gave you a top six list we looked at some of the most dysfunctional teams in the world of sports right now i gave you the oakland athletics at number one and we took some time today to to just pay attention and recognize the life and everything that it involved of bobby knight as he passed away at 83 years old tomorrow we'll be back with you as well of course we've got some uh good old-fashioned thursday night football everybody loves thursday night football right no not really players hate thursday night football coaches hate thursday night football the games typically suck but this is what we have and a matter of fact this should be interesting maybe this this will be a good one we got tennessee versus the steelers they're going to be up in pittsburgh taking on the steelers there is not going to be a ryan tannenhill will levis is going to have another opportunity to go out there and start because tannenhill is dealing with this ankle and i don't know is he going to wake up and throw four touchdowns tomorrow i'm not so sure but mike rabell he made it very clear yesterday who the starting quarterback will be on thursday night listen to mike rabell yeah i don't see ryan being able to do much today so i would imagine that uh you know as of today it'll be will unless something changes so we'll see but right now i don't see ryan being able to do much with the ankle i don't see ryan being able to do too much with the ankle yeah not neither do i you might as well see what will love has got you drafted him might as well throw him out there and see what he can do makes sense right certainly makes sense oh yeah you know what there's so much that went on tonight we didn't even get into this ryan tannenhill might be dealing with an ankle uh but jimmy garoppolo is being benched by antonio pierce and so we will not see him be starting for the raiders the next game and then here in atlanta uh desmond ritter not a shock or surprise he's been benched as well in favor of taylor heinike and so he's going to be out there starting and the head coach here for the falcons arthur smith he talked about it and he basically said that yeah heinike is going to be the dude moving forward and heinike actually spoke to the media and he said arthur smith just sent him a text and said hey it's you bro it's you arthur texted me last night around 10 10 15 and of course i was sleeping so my alarm goes off it's going around 5 35 45 with my phone it's first thing i see so it's all right here we go um so yeah i found this one at 5 45 and i came in better get ready to go it's nice to know that he's getting the the proper sleep to be an nfl starting quarterback eight five five two one two four cvs it's eight five five two one two four cvs cameron's calling from missouri you're on cvs sports radio how you doing i'm excellent how are you i'm you know i'm all right i'm currently writing a paper on european explorers and listening to your shows so actually not too bad uh but um no it actually is i'm not gonna lie i looked at your uh look at your list and uh i didn't totally disagree the athletics you've got to put them on there right i think that's an easy one um i'm going to throw one on there it's team i'm a fan of the seattle mariners and i say it because they just ended their 20-year playoff drought 21 years last year right big year big expectations they come into this year spend literally no money go out and get pay oscar hernandez colton wong who both just do nothing for them and now they have to get rid of them uh they got rid of jesse winker who's supposed to be a big accusation did nothing julia rodriguez kinda yeah he had a solid season hit around 275 but it was the only bright spot on that team at that point and with a team with their history and the ownership going out and publicly saying they're going to start trying to win 54% of baseball games that's it that's how you make a winning team that is dysfunctional in my opinion i don't think they know what the hell they're doing in seattle and i think that has an argument to be on the top six michigan michigan's dysfunctional right now let's be real they're just a little brother to ohio state and that's the way it's always going to be that's the most dysfunctional thing about michigan football my opinion all right well thank you camera for calling from missouri mariners don't fall in the same category sorry about that homie is calling from louisville kentucky you're on cbs sports radio hey what's going on yeah the minnesota timberlows are the most dysfunctional sports franchise in american sports history when when the brothers bought it after they bought it from their initial owner and then glenn taylor saved it and then he did a handshake deal for the joe smith thing and they still have not retired kg's jersey it's nonsense all right thank you homie for calling from louisville kentucky well by the way that man doesn't want anything to do with the franchise as of right now anyway okay speaking of kevin garnett no he i don't think he wants to roll back over there eight five five two one two four cbs paul is calling from toronto um hey thanks jr love your list appreciate the opportunity a consideration from north of the border in a different sport yeah you're live on the radio yes try maple leaf uh 56 years since a cup they've had i mean if it's not an ownership problem it's a gm problem or a coach problem i mean up here they would be like the the the dictionary definition of of dysfunctional if they don't hit the top six they should probably hit the the top 10 and in all those 56 years without a cup the arena is filled every night um yeah i had considered dysfunctional is the right word well thank you paul i had considered putting them on the list but then i realized most of north america wouldn't even know or care yeah no i'm just i'm being honest i thought about putting on the list i know i know and then i said i said nobody's gonna know what the hell i'm saying so there we have it well thank you for injecting sorry for the time hockey nah no problem thank you paul look man we're barely talking baseball the next time we talk about baseball you want to know i have a feeling it's going to be about the ratings of the world series um from there we're going to look at free agency where does shohei otani go maybe we'll have some player movement some legitimate playoff movement but or player movement they ain't going to be too much more baseball talk like we have had over the past two weeks until we get to next year until maybe we get to a day or two in the all-star break and it's the home run derby outside of that man baseball talks gonna be slim to none where does shohei otani go that'll be the next big baseball story uh it's just the appetite for baseball isn't necessarily there the same way it is for for football obviously and in basketball it doesn't exist that way big c calling from atlanta you're on the charles sport brief show go ahead hey big c you're live on the radio hey hello yep are you okay is the phone are you fighting the phone or is the phone fighting you the phone whooping my butt okay what's going on big c hello yes you're live go ahead okay okay hey look look real quick um um your top six i mean is everybody on opinion but the lana falcon i don't understand how he cannot see lana falcon in this array because that okay this one's gonna go lana got three picks the last three years and the top eight i mean i mean last one b john robertson number eight and then okay then you got uh a pitch everybody thought would be great you got you got you got london so then now you don't have a
