This is when I get started every single weeknight, 10 p.m. Eastern Time, 7 Pacific. I'm being joined by super producer and host Dave Shepherd, but there is no show without you. And so whether you're at home, you're at work, you're going out on the town, you're coming in, you're going out, whatever the hell you're doing, let's have a good time.

Okay. It's Friday night. Like I said, we got championship baseball going on right now at this very moment. This very second, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks, they're tied to all top of the sixth inning. Philadelphia leads the series two to one. They're trying to go up three to one. And the Arizona Diamondbacks are just trying to even this series up two to two.

We'll talk about it. Meanwhile, a baseball game that took place earlier today between the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers, the Astros, they come back, they go down, they ultimately come back to win five to four. The Astros take a 3-2 series lead against the Rangers. Let's remember this. The Astros were down 0-2 to start this series, and Jose Altuve is just playing out of his mind.

I'll explain momentarily what the hell is going on with this dude as he continues to make a case for one of the, well, I think he's already established himself as one of the greatest postseason hitters that Major League Baseball has ever seen. We'll talk about that momentarily. Michigan, we got into this a little bit last night. Whether or not Michigan is finding a way to steal signals and cheat, well, it looks like they have because it looks like Michigan has suspended one of its own quote-unquote football analysts for being a little too extra when it comes down to evaluating some of the opposition.

So we'll get into that. Of course, we got some great football over the weekend, not just on the college side. I can't wait for Sunday Night Football. We might as well call this the Alabama ball.

Jalen Hurts, Tua Tongaveloa. We're gonna have the Dolphins. We're gonna have the Eagles. A Sunday Night Football matchup. That should be a damn good game. We got some other games going on as well. I want to see what happens with the Lions and the Ravens. Are the Lions gonna keep this rolling against one of the NFL's best defenses? And then we got some other games that make you go, I only want to watch out of curiosity.

The Bears and the Raiders? Jimmy Garoppolo is dealing with a back issue. And tell me if you heard of this guy before. Tyson, Bajant? Have you heard of him?

Probably not. Shep, have you heard of this dude besides yesterday? Not before this week.

And nobody knows who the hell he is. His parents barely know him, and he's getting ready to start an NFL game. And so the Bears and the Raiders is going to be interesting. So we'll talk about all of this as the night goes on.

Tom Brady is, I don't want to say he's crapping on the current NFL product, but he is saying that is less aggressive than when he used to play. That's at JR Sport Brief everywhere on social media. I told you that the Phillies and the Diamondbacks right now are tied at 2-all. Phillies trying to go up 3-1 in the series and get a little bit closer to the World Series by shutting the door.

And I don't want to speak out of turn. I don't want to exaggerate. But the baseball game that we had earlier this afternoon, this evening, in the American League Championship Series, I don't want to say it was a classic, but it was a damn good game. Justin Verlander was on the mound. We had some ejections.

We had a little bit of a tussle. We had a gigantic home run by one of baseball's greatest postseason performers. Let me take you through a walk on what took place as the Astros ultimately beat the Rangers 5-4. Alex Bregman starts off the game, hits a home run in the first, makes it 1-0. Justin Verlander, future Hall of Famer. He would be in a Hall of Fame tomorrow if he quit. Well, he'd have to wait a certain amount of years, but he'd be in a Hall of Fame.

This man was cruising. And so Nate Lowe hit a home run to tie it up at 1-5. It's just like, okay, Justin Verlander's not perfect. He gave up one run. Fine. Normal.

Sure. Jose Abreu hit an RBI single to give Houston the lead 2-1. This was in the sixth inning.

And so I'm saying to myself, oh, this is money. Justin Verlander's on the mound. He has a 2-1 lead. And then things went into the toilet for the Astros. Adolis Garcia, he came up against Justin Verlander.

He looked at him in the face in the sixth. They were leading, the Astros were, 2-1 until Garcia did this to Verlander. Adolis Garcia swings and hits one high and deep into left field. McCormick is back at the wall.

It is gone! Adolis Garcia, who slams his back down midway between home and first, now starts to take his trot. A three-run Jimmy Jack here for Adolis Garcia to put Texas in front 4-2.

Yeah, at that point, I said to myself, well, damn it. Mr. Verlander is just about cooked. He was cruising, man. He gave up that home run to Nate Lowe. And then Garcia came and said, I got a three-run bomb for you. And Justin Verlander, he finished his afternoon, his evening, five and two-thirds inning pitch to go along with four runs that he gave up.

And they all came courtesy of the long ball. And so the Rangers look like they're going to be in command here. After God is sweating, they're up 4-2, and it just gets, it gets dicey. Garcia comes back up in the eighth.

They have a 4-2 lead. And then I want you to listen to this, also courtesy of the Rangers Radio Network. He got upset by getting hit by a pitch after the home run.

Listen. And the pitch hit him. Adolis starts drawing at Maldonado. And here come the benches as Adolis and Maldonado are separated by the home plate umpire. And there are players streaming from both sides.

The bullpens are emptying right now. And as we look down there, I don't see any punches currently being thrown, but people are restraining the combatants, Adolis Garcia and Adolis Garcia, and Martine Maldonado. And as a result of that, Abreu got ejected for throwing. Garcia got ejected for inciting almost a brawl.

And then Dusty Baker got ejected for defending his pitcher. And I'm saying, what the hell is Garcia's problem? Why is he starting beef? Hey, y'all have to lead.

You guys are leading 4-2. And then second to that, why the hell would he throw at you? He's trying to win the game. Why would he put you on base?

I mean, it makes no sense. Garcia should have been ejected. Why Dusty Baker was ejected, nobody knows. While the pitcher was ejected, nobody knows. Garcia, just an embarrassment. I'm sorry, but this is what the hell you got to call a stupid baseball player.

There is no reason, none at all, for him to throw a fit because he got hit. That just goes counter to winning. I mean, this is the ALCS, man. This isn't some no nothing game in the middle of June. This is, they're trying to win a championship, man.

And so a lot of nonsense there. And then the nonsense stopped because a guy who is no nonsense, no celebrations, no nonsense, no trash talking, this man just plays. He came up in the ninth. The Rangers are still leading 4-2.

They're trying to shut this damn game down. And then the Rangers ran into Jose Altuve. And what did he do in the ninth? I want you to listen to this from the Astros radio network. And Altuve hits it in the air pretty deep to left. Carter is back at the wall, leaves, and it is gone! It's gone! It's gone!

It's gone! Jose Altuve gives the Astros a 5-4 lead. Jose Altuve gives the Astros a 5-4 lead.

How do you like that? A three run home run. A three run home run. They enter into the ninth.

They're losing 4-2. They get two dudes on base. Jose Altuve decides to crank one into left.

5-4 the Astros lead. And then we get to the bottom of the ninth. The Texas Rangers are on their last stand. Presley is on the mound. We had two guys get on base automatically.

It's like, oh, here we go. Are the Texas Rangers going to bounce back? Are they ultimately going to win this game on a walk off? Are they going to force extra innings? What the hell are we going to see?

Well, it didn't happen. Listen to the final call. The 2-2. Swing and a miss! Carter strikes out and that is the ball game. What a win for the Houston Astros. Their one win away from a third trip to the World Series. Jose Altuve a go ahead three run homer in the top of the ninth and the Astros hold on for a 5-4 win over the Texas Rangers. Taking three games to two lead in the ALCS.

Crazy. The Houston Astros are going to have an opportunity to close out the series and go to the World Series. That will take place. That game, game six, is Sunday night in Houston, Texas. Here in Arlington, the Astros come in and they sweep all three games at Globe Life Field. They move the series, they enter into Arlington, they walk in 0-2, down 0-2, and they leave up 3-2 with a chance to close things out on Sunday night. If, if we need a game seven, if the Rangers beat the Astros on Sunday, game seven will take place on Monday. There may not be any more baseball in Arlington unless the Rangers go to the World Series. The Houston Astros will have two times, two chances at home to go to the World Series.

I think they are gonna go back. Jose Altuve who just shows up, goes to work, all five foot six inches of him. He, he makes it look easy. No emotion, no celebrating. He's just like, yeah, I'm happy.

I'm just, I'm just doing my job. This is what Jose Altuve told Ken Rosenthal after the game on Fox. Jose, you've hit 26 postseason home runs, but given all of the emotion in this game, where would you rank this one? I mean, number one, because it was tonight, it just happened. So I'm really happy. I mean, we were down, we didn't want to go home, down by one, you know, especially with Diovaldi throwing the next game. So it was good to, to hit that one and get the team to win.

Oh yeah, well, absolutely. He makes this look so easy. I could see Jose Altuve, I could see him on the subway with me, right? I could see Altuve just walking through the supermarket with me. I could see Jose Altuve picking up his kids at daycare next to mine. Jose Altuve does not look like a baseball player. This is the beauty of baseball.

It's almost the same type of beauty that you'd see in soccer, that anybody can wake up and play. You don't have to be seven feet tall and be closer to the basket. You don't have to be built like a a truck or, or a tank battling against, you know, 300 pound linemen. You don't have to be the fastest dude.

Do you have hand-eye coordination? Can you hit the ball? Can you run around the bases? Then damn it, you can play baseball. And this man who is five foot six inches, who looks like a child the majority of time that he's out there on the field, he's one of the greatest baseball players that we've ever seen in the postseason.

And so I'm like, damn it, enjoy it now. He's already 33 years old. And that home run, that three run home run that Jose Altuve hit, 26 postseason home runs. The only dude in front of him is Manny Ramirez who has 29.

And even if you want to think about Manny Ramirez physically in comparison to Jose Altuve, I think Jose Altuve is about the size of, I don't know, maybe one of Manny's thighs. This is an amazing feat, what we're seeing right now. And so whether or not you love the Astros, or you hate the Astros, or you are still thinking about them cheating, you got to respect Jose Altuve. You got to admire what he's able to go out there and do. And I mean, damn it, he might be right back in the World Series, picking up another victory.

And it's gonna come a point in time where people are just gonna have to, for lack of better term, they gonna have to go out there and kiss the ring. He is one of the greatest postseason performers that we have seen. Congratulations to the Houston Astros walking into a series down 0-2, walking out on the road ahead 3-2, one victory away from another World Series appearance. Astro fans, man, you got something to be proud of. Shout outs to everybody listening in Houston, Texas right now on 610 The Loop. We're going to get into so much more. But on the other side of the break, I'm going to take your phone calls. I want you to hear from Dusty Baker, who was ejected.

And then I'm going to detail to you a few more numbers that really showcase how great Jose Altuve is. I hope you're great. I'm going to be great here on the radio. And then you can pretty much just about call it a wrap. Before we went to break, we talked about the other baseball game that took place earlier this afternoon, the Houston Astros. They beat the Rangers, the final score, 5-4. The big hit, Jose Altuve, with a three-run home run in the ninth inning to make it 5-4. They go up 3-2 in their series. They are one victory away from going to another World Series.

Now, having said that, there was a lot of fireworks the inning prior in the eighth. Adolis Garcia, who hit a home run earlier in the game, this time he comes up to the bat. He comes up to bat and he gets hit.

And it's like y'all are leading 4-2. The Houston Astros are trying to bounce back. Why in the hell would they go ahead and decide to just randomly put a dude on base? That would be akin to stepping out of bounds on purpose at a football game. Or maybe just running backwards. It's like shooting at the wrong basket in a basketball game.

It's like laying down on the mat, taking a knee in a boxing match. Why in the hell would you hurt yourself by just hitting this dude? Save it for next year. Hit him next year.

This makes no sense. And so we had the whole brouhaha. We had a bunch of people thrown out. Garcia was thrown out. The pitcher of Bregu was thrown out. Dusty Baker was thrown out for defending his damn pitcher. And so afterwards, Dusty Baker was asked about Garcia getting hit and this is what Dusty had to say. And anytime you're throwing a projectile 97 miles an hour, some of them are going to get away.

I don't care if you're big league, hall of fame, I don't care who you are. And I'm just glad we came back and won the game. The guys are with us because we didn't do anything wrong.

Yeah, space people gonna get hit. Garcia overreacted, man. Get over yourself. Bruce Bochy, the other manager, right? He's supposed to stick up for his guys. You know, is he going to tell a little bit of a lie?

Is he going to plead the fifth? Well, he answered that question. Hey, Bruce, do you think Garcia got hit on purpose?

Tell me. Who knows what intentions are, but it's not the first time it's happened and just couldn't get the game going again. And I'm sure that affected him because he came in to get out there in the eighth inning. And so maybe that played a part in it, but you know, they came back with that said, we, we had our chances to tack on. We just couldn't do it. This was a tough one.

No getting around it, but it's, it's part of the game and what you have to deal with and, and the good clubs deal with in the right way. And these guys, they'll, they'll put this behind them. Oh, see good manager right there. He pled the fifth.

He said, who knows what the intentions are. What a great deflection by him. Bruce Bochy might as well go out there and just teach a class for a lot of these managers on, on how to conduct themselves and speak to the media. And I know it's not the world series, it's not the championship, but maybe Bruce Bochy can lend some advice to the New York Liberty who lost a tough game in the WNBA finals.

And quite a few of their players just declined answering any type of questions. Shout out to Bruce Bochy, pleading the fifth. He's going to need a whole lot more help to, you know, still move forward and go to the world series. We'll see 855-212 for CBS. Mark is here from California. You're on CBS sports radio.

Mark, go ahead, please. What's going on JR? So I think this Astros team, if they can win the world series this year, we're talking dynasty. I don't really like to throw the word dynasty out there.

Everyone was talking about, you know, football is a freaking chief. No, it's not a dynasty, but remember one in 2017, the cheating scandal. Then they went back in 2019 and they lost. And then in 2021, they lost. Remember, they almost came back down from 0-3 against Tampa in 2020, right? Boston won the world series that year. Then they won it in 2022 and now they're going back. So if they win it, three titles in six years, a chance to go four out of the last five years to the world series. I mean, that's a dynasty to me. Yep. Without a shadow of a doubt, man.

You know, we talked about that last week. A caller specifically hit us up and said, JR, do you think that these Houston Astros, are they a dynasty? If they go back to the world series, forget about winning the world series just by going back. Would you consider the Houston Astros to be a dynasty?

And I think to kind of get over that hump, I think they would have to win it, but we can go back and look at a team and granted, they only won, they won one. I think it was about 14 straight division crowns. The Atlanta Braves picked up in the nineties into the two thousands, but they only walked away with one. We know who the dynasty was. That was the New York Yankees. It's because they actually won the championships. And so yes, with the Houston Astros looking at two right now, and then you go back to 2017, I still think there's a little bit of stink on that one based on the revelations afterwards that they cheated, but you can't ignore what they have done over seven years.

Okay. Have they been cheating all the way through? You know, are they banging on trash cans all the way through? Are they getting signs out of the sky? Are they being helped by extraterrestrials?

I don't think so. Like they got a damn good squad. They got some mashers out there and they got Jose Altuve who has been playing out of his mind. And I know we have additional rounds of baseball now, right? We didn't always have no wild card. Well, now we have the wild card, the divisional round, the championship round that gives everybody, or has given folks an extra opportunity to put up some numbers.

And so yes, congratulations. You can't take away Jose Altuve's 26 postseason home runs. Only Manny Ramirez has more than him. I mean, you can't take away the fact that Jose Altuve also has 10 career go ahead post-season home runs. He's ahead of Albert Pujols right now for the most in major league baseball post-season history. And that three run home run that he hit in the ninth inning, that was his third go ahead home run in the ninth inning or later of a playoff game. That's the most by any batter in postseason history.

If you need a quick summation without the fancy numbers, Jose Altuve is clutch. He gets the job done. He's like, he's like Reggie Miller out there. Okay. If you like the Portland Trailblazers or maybe you like the Bucks now he's like Damian Lillard. You do not want to see this dude at the end of a game.

Okay. And we didn't just find this out tonight. Go ahead and ask the New York Yankees how they feel about Jose Altuve. Aroldis Chapman, by the way, is now pitching on the Texas Rangers. Ask him, ask Chapman how he feels about Jose Altuve. Walking off in Houston, leaving Aroldis Chapman standing on the mound, looking like he just got smacked into another generation. All he could do is stand on the mound and smile nervously because Mighty Mouse, a five foot six man who busts everybody ass, took him to town. And by the way, Aroldis Chapman has to be one of the biggest pitchers that you will ever see in your life. This guy's back. I don't know what the hell this dude's doing in the gym. He's a giant.

Nice to know that you played a little league in Toronto. What's on your mind? It's bad enough that the base is clear for a base-cleary brawl, but the Bulletins, they run into during the cavalry. How much help does Alvarez need?

How much does any batter or catcher or pitcher need? Let them go at it themselves. So they don't... Why is the Bulletins rushing? If I'm Rob Manford, I'm going to suspend everybody. You're going to suspend everybody now? I don't know if we can do that in the postseason. That would take away from things, man. We want to see the baseball players play baseball.

If it's going to get a little tense, it's going to get tense. I agree with you. It's stupid.

I agree with you. It's comical. I found the shot. I always do, and it doesn't have to be the postseason. I find the shot of the dudes running in from each bullpen, running all the way from the outfield, all the way to just join in on the outskirts of whatever fight or pushing and shoving matches going on. I find it hilarious because it's like y'all are late to the party, and what are you going to do? Just stand around and look? You're going to, you know, maybe push somebody?

What do you want? It's a waste of time. It's a comical scene at that point. Hey Marco Belletti, did you see all of the stupid relief pitchers running into the fight? Like what are they doing? Yeah, that's baseball brawls are the worst in the simple fact that it's the entire, you got what, 26 guys on each side. They're all doing the hold me back.

It's awful. They're running in from 200 feet away and they have no idea what's going on, nor do they truly care. They don't even want to be there.

Yeah, they're just doing it because it's, it means that they're a good teammate. Well, I mean, really, if you got a brawl going and you're sitting in the bullpen, I guarantee you the first thing out of everybody's mouth is because you got to run now 400 feet. I won't go all the way over there.

Nothing's going to happen. We got to get up. We got to push and shove. We got to show team solidarity. If we don't get up, we look like a bunch of losers.

I will say this. I don't know who the hell the guy is. And Shep, you, you might remember this. I, I think this guy played for the Cincinnati Reds a few seasons ago and somebody, this wasn't even a matter of hitting anybody. Somebody was chirping at him on the opposing.

I think it was like maybe the Reds and the, the, the pirates. Somebody was chirping at the pitcher from the dugout. And I think the inning ended and he's walking off the field and they're chirping on the other side.

This man said, screw this. He calmly walked over to the opposing dugout and he started throwing hands. It was like one on three and he knocked somebody out. He knocked somebody.

He got a clean shot on him. Do y'all remember that? I remember, I remember who it was.

Shep, do you have who? Well, I think it was like one on 12. I think he went after a bunch of them.

I'm looking up right now. I don't remember who it was, but I can, I can remember the image and there was, I mean, he was surrounded by the other team and he didn't care. He, this was like, it was like Batman being surrounded by like a bunch of minions.

Like I'm getting everybody on one hit. He, he had no fear and we don't see that. And I know, you know, we want to be nonviolent and it's sport. So it's not like it's just taking place out on the street, but there was something real interesting about seeing a baseball player say, I'm going to walk into the lion's den by myself. And this man handled business.

Amir Garrett. It wasn't the, uh, it was the Reds and the, uh, the Pittsburgh, right? You were correct.

Yes. Oh my God. And he, he, he clocked somebody with a haymaker and then they couldn't do nothing.

Nobody wanted nothing else after that. It's just, it's wild. You know, you, you alluded to it, you know, Marco, I'm sure you saw the play as well. The worst part about it is if Garcia just takes it on the chin and is frustrated and like, you know, you can, you can just see him like, you know, shouting out to the, to the heavens, but he, but he takes the base. This game is five, two, you have a runner on first and second. You don't have to stop the game the way it was. And that momentum completely came to a halt when the bullpens came out and it took minutes upon minutes to kind of get everyone back into the game because they had to take forever with multiple ejections with the pitcher and then dusty Baker.

And then obviously, um, a Dallas. And so my, my thing is this, it's such a shame. Honestly, I know this is a team sport. He needs to take responsibility for this loss. Jr. You, you alluded to that. If he just, if he just takes this on the chin and has the presence of mind to say, you know what, I could cost my team though. Mentim right now, we have a two run lead more than likely whoever wins this game is going to win the series.

Maybe I should just have my best peaceful mind moving forward. And he didn't do that. And that cost them the series.

Yeah, no, it's, it's the, it's the greatest example of stupid baseball player. Like that's it. Like you got to have some type of emotional control.

You got to have a little bit, start off with common sense. They're, they're, they're, they're trying to win a game right now. They're losing your winning. Why the hell would he put you on base intentionally makes zero sense. And he beelined to him. And when he beelined to him, the second time he stopped, he knew he wasn't going to thorny fists. You did. You guys see that?

You know what I'm talking about? He beelined to Maldonado. He never went towards the mound.

No, no, no. That's what I'm saying. He had the initial confrontation with the catcher. He shoved him. It wasn't a punch. But then when it seemed like cooler heads were prevailing, he then did like a little loop around kind of like what we saw with Isaiah Stewart with the pistons and went out to LeBron James. He did it like five times. Same thing in this, in this case, but he went right at him and then he didn't do anything.

Yeah. It's the hold me back. Nobody actually wants to fight.

They just want to look like they want to fight. It's such a shame because that was arguably one of the greatest hits in Rangers franchise history. Maybe the biggest. Well, Oh, his home run against Verlander? Yeah. I mean, listen, if the Rangers won that 2011 World Series, that might be a different conversation, but this home run might have very well gone as the greatest home run in franchise history. But it's all for not.

How old would you have to be? Well, yeah, you may be in your 80s, maybe, right? You could theoretically, I mean, think about it, if you have a kid at 20, your kid has a kid at 20, their kid has a kid at 20, you would theoretically be 60 as a great grandparent. It's possible. And that baby be one.

Yeah. Maybe he is a great grandparent. Maybe that's why all these kids, they don't shut up in his house, they sleep.

Well, apparently you can't do that. You can't do what it takes to be a parent because it's got to be so quiet. Well, it's Friday night. You think he's stuck babysitting the grandkids while his parents go out and make, his kids make more babies. Mitch's kids have a good gig. Let's put it that way. I don't know.
