Los Angeles, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Dallas, here in Atlanta. Man, we got people listening in Canada. What's up to Vancouver? What's up to Montreal? What's up to Toronto?

Calgary? And everything in between. As I said, I'm here with you for one more hour. We've had a busy night. Talked about Deion Sanders and what might be in store for Colorado. We talked about some of the blowouts over the weekend.

Gave you an update on Travis Kelce. Day to day right now as the Lions and the Giants are going to be in the game. They're going to be in the game.

They're going to be in day to day right now as the Lions and the Chiefs get ready to to open up the NFL season on Thursday night. I do want to talk to you about the Cardinals because yeah, you just can't have one screwed up team in the NFL. The Raiders can't be screwed up by themselves.

It has to, they have to get some help from the Cards and I will explain that. We talked about the Niners. No Nick Bosa. And how about the Chiefs too? Forget Travis Kelce's injury. Like Chris Jones is still not back and not expected to play.

I mean we are really button up against this. The game is Thursday. It's Thursday night. By the time we swing through for a few hours, it's going to be Wednesday morning.

I don't think he's just walking out there you know onto the field and going to knock Jared Goff onto his ass. I don't expect that. So we had a busy night. There's so much more we have to get into. We have some callers that have been waiting patiently to get onto the airwaves and so let's go ahead and chat it up with them. 855-2124 CBS. Let's start off with Sed. He is calling from Chicago here on the JR Sport Reshow.

Go ahead Sed. Yeah what's going on bro? What's on your mind? Nothing much man.

I had one to touch back down with that D.I. Man so when I was thinking about you know possible NFL teams that he could possibly coach with you know Dallas Cowboys was the one that came to mind but as you sat down and broke it down my man you know that would be a crowded room with him and Jerry but the second team I had in mind was was definitely Atlanta. Another former team he used to play with. I think he could possibly jail well with Arthur Blankman. Arthur seemed more of a laid-back kind of guy more likable but yeah that's that's what I had in mind but. Okay well I mean that's that's that's a hell of an advancement. I think it's a fun conversation to have. I don't view it as something that's realistic right now until he actually has some success with Colorado and and whether you are Terry Fontenot here in Atlanta as the general manager or whether you're you're any GM you you really run the risk of bringing in a personality and a name that that you're supposed to be their boss and the general public is going to look at at the coach and go well the coach is the one who really has the influence and the one who's in charge. I mean not every situation is like Bill Belichick or or even a Pete Carroll. It'll be a difficult thing to do to just say hey this GM will bring said coach in and this said coach would be Dion. I think that's a tough thing to do man. Yeah for sure for sure and just one more quick thing I know you got a lot of calls waiting on deck but man I know a lot of people didn't get a chance to wash the door back at jackson state but man if anybody ever gets a chance to just look at some old films back there man when I say man he is surgical with that ball bro man when I say ball placement everything that kid he's got it bro to believe it or not I honestly think he got first round talent written on him uh JR I honestly believe that man I truly do. I think if he can continue what he's doing in Colorado with his dad I think most certainly I think you said for calling from Chicago yeah you don't you don't just go around throwing the rock for 500 plus yards and not be talented and I think people are now seeing it here even though it's one game with Colorado it ain't it ain't too shabby of a thing to see. Jose is calling from Atlanta you're on CBS sports radio go ahead Jose. Appreciate the time JR just want to go back on Dion a little bit yeah um I got a couple of variables I want to throw out there I'm an Atlanta fountain fan he can kick a hole for 18 years and a graduate of Jackson state so I got an opinion on coach prior when he was with the Falcons early on he came here with a blaze of glory behind him I mean he was all that and I thought man this dude most time people don't live up to the hype but he did and when he left the fountain I was upset with him I was wrong for that I was upset he's been upset with the thousands but not putting talent around him he went out chasing them championships and he found them when he came to jackson state he came out of nowhere for me blew me away I said man jackson state got him and he changed everything about hbcus and jack state jack stay has so much money and time invested in them they on tv every week he blew that thing up when he left somebody called me and said what you think about prime now I say he came there he looked like confused now everybody know you can make it anywhere you go and I could not doubt this man anywhere he goes anything he do he's gonna be successful at it because he got confident he's the man for the job so like I said I wanted to hang on the floor but I couldn't because after he left the fountain I see what he was doing when he came to jack state he turned that thing out so I appreciate coach prime doing what he did I didn't need more people to follow behind him and do the same thing okay well that's what do you mean follow behind him more people as in who influential people ex-players people that want to come back to hbcus and teach these young guys how to play the game we had a lot of people I had a cousin play with jack state jacky slater he showed that you could be a hall of famer coming out of hbcu and somebody needed to invest a little more time and get these boys back on program because I think that was important for them everybody to see well we we we've had quite a few uh athletes and not just in a football space and thank you jose for calling from atlanta who have come through and committed their time to to coaching it at hbcu so uh bonzi wells in the nba I can go ahead and look at another nfl player in eddie george these are dudes who have gone back and spent time at hbcus but here's the deal even for someone like eddie george that's it's not deon sanders this is the guy you you could say he is the I don't know I guess live wire he's he's the most charismatic nfl player that the league has seen over the past 30 35 years I I don't I don't think there's really any dispute of that like this deon sanders and it's prime time it's whether you want to talk about the chains the chains the hair the clothes the outfits he helped define a lot of what you currently see here in 2023 I mean now we see arena walks and stadium walks the first dude I can remember seeing showing up like that to a team sport to an nfl game is deon yeah we can think about boxers running around in outfits we can think about joe namath running around in a fur coat yeah we can go back far but to really do it on a consistent basis and make it a sales point for yourself deon took it to another level eight five five two one two four cbs road is calling from virginia you're on the jr sport reef show hey how's it going glad to hear your show and all I'm the chess guy just getting back from a chess camp teaching hey but deon I think deon is the real deal okay wait wait okay you said you came back from a chess camp yeah I will we'll get to that momentarily coaching some kids in richmond oh lovely that's where shock about him or something uh near there the north side in richmond here we had a chess camp two weeks well any before I start getting too in-depth it sounds like kerry street what else are your thoughts on uh on jackson here I looked at I looked at the record for jackson here before deon got there they were horrible and he totally changed them around that guy can coach and also I went to an hbcu myself uh here virginia state university okay and uh uh I'm sorry you you gotta you gotta next time you gotta turn the tv down or off okay okay yeah I got you that's actually you in the background was that me or did you sure I was that's you I don't know what I was hearing I'm like oh my god that's tough man I'm look it's enough that I already hear myself through a monitor my headphones and then I'm speaking to you and then I gotta talk to you plus me again trust me it's it's confusing enough and that's that's just me I appreciate what you're doing with the chess camp though that's nice shout outs everybody in richmond shout outs everybody in richmond also looking forward to whatever the commanders do this upcoming season with mr sam how it's uh I can't believe it it's today is it the sixth yes on the east yes it is wednesday september 6th on the east coast here we are the summer is done not officially chef what is it the 23rd or 21st 21st but when the us open is done jr to me that's when we're really in fall or to your point when the nfl season one week one kicks off would it be thursday or sunday well that's obvious oh great point so when when that first regular season game hit so when lions chiefs tomorrow takes place 8 20 p.m eastern time on nbc with torico and collinsworth that's when I think for a lot of people fall kicks in summer is done yeah what the hell is the difference between the weekend and three four more days no difference yeah well I hear you but but I mean football matters now right it's not cupcake city like it is in college football it's the nfl baby and so to your point it's sunday or thursday but I think for most people it is thursday especially with the two quarterbacks we have going at each other wait a minute nobody is going to get beat 73 to nothing no I mean I mean look if this was if this was the lions of yesteryear and a super bowl reigning champion yes but you got a legitimate team that's coming for the nfc north well we I don't care about the nfc north okay talk about okay talk about the the lions yeah we we we got plenty of time to talk about the line all right let's talk about a team that's actually useless okay I'm talking about a team and no okay I'm asking about somebody getting smashed 73 to zero I know that's not happening but there is a team out there that's that's trying to lose on purpose and that's the Arizona Cardinals they suck okay I mean they're actually dumping quarterbacks they got kyla murray on pup after he blew out his leg he's not prepared to go out there and play and in this I can't even say it's surprising it's just mind-numbing I probably will put the the cardinals in the same space of jim ursay's cults because we learned today that kyla murray is going to continue on as a captain here with the arizona cardinals and when asked why he is still a captain knowing that he's not going to play their new head coach that they got over from the philadelphia eagles jonathan gannon he he pretty much he named all the captains and then he gave an update on kyla murray and when we'll see him listen to this kylar kaisir hunk james connor buddha and our man dennis kardek kylar when he's healthy to play mentally and physically he'll play so that that obviously led into part of our decision that he's he's getting ready to go and when he's ready to go out there he'll go out there what when he's ready he'll play and that's why he's a cat well this is the same dude with a prior regime sitting on the same contract right now that the organization and even the owner basically doubled down on saying can we put a clause in his contract that says he's actually going to study that he's actually going to log hours in his ipad where he studies film who the hell expects and wants this dude to be captain who's going to respect this how do you have the locker room's attention knowing that you're trying to build things from the bottom up when a guy whose contract was a source of consternation that kyla murray had to defend his work ethic last year that kelvin beecham who was supposed to be protecting him if he was healthy it basically said he still needs to be a doctor he's going to be a doctor he basically said he still needs to go out and mature where's the trust from your players that you're just not placating the kyla murray that you're not just quote-unquote kissing his ass to try to maintain peace this is a bad idea is it the end-all be-all no is it the worst thing no no it's not but it is a ridiculous showing that you can't take the cardinal serious right now that a man who's a not gonna play and whose work ethic has been questioned for the past several years in public by the owner by his teammates to just say hey you're the captain again like for what they should give him a c to wear on a ball cap on the sidelines this is just completely nutty and so i don't know if jonathan gannon is a a coach who is going to be lined up to eventually be fired but have you heard him inspire the team you know this this is a clip that has been played and circulated just over the past week jonathan gannon trying to just just i don't know trying to inspire his guys trying to trying to get them motivated you listen to this and you tell me if you a understand what the hell he's talking about and then b if you do are you getting excited over this listen welcome back who drove over here wait let me see your hands who took the bus did you have fire in your gut did you we're here for a reason don't get that twisted okay we're here for a reason to win games so if you didn't have that fire in your gut you better light the fire pretty fast be who you are just understand i'm looking for killers he's he's getting ready to go and when he's ready to go out there he'll go out there uh what is he what is what is this man talking about i was i was playing that the contrast oh no i understand not that not the latter part i'm just saying for the first clip like what is what you got fire in your gut or who took the bus what are we what are you talking about where where are these coaches and i get it your first year coaches now it's on you it's one thing to stand on the sidelines it's another thing to to kind of pop in here there it's another thing to to lead one portion of the team it's another thing to lead a room it's a whole nother situation to be the man and for ganon right now is there fire in your belly i i'm looking for killers you should see and if you you have if you can look it up online and go go ahead and do so the looks on his players faces go what the hell is this guy talking about eight five five two one two four cbs look these these cardinals right now they are on their road to just just being a terrible team to being potentially the squad that ends up with the number one overall draft pick and i guess when collin murray is ready to play they'll throw him out there but if y'all really want to stink the joint up just keep josh dobbs there eight five five two one two four cbs craig is calling from arizona you're on cbs sports radio what's up craig they are you are a great sports psychologist how are you well i'm doing good you know i'm a bay area native the niners are my team love the history there love my team the cardinals since i live in arizona are my second favorite team the curt warner years were excellent and my third favorite team is whoever's playing the cowboys but this back to the cardinals it's like the soap opera gone wrong you know i i hate listening to the radio now i can hardly listen to their pre-games i'm with you on that bro that's all i got well well hold on a second you said yeah you said dak press got to arizona is that what people in arizona are talking about no no i live in prescott arizona oh oh okay i didn't know what the hell you i thought i heard press gun i thought dak i didn't know what the hell you were saying well i just said my third favorite team is whoever's playing the cowboys oh i understand i get it well thank you for helping me put one and one together okay craig you got it all right thank you for calling from arizona i'm a great sports psychologist or whatever you call me but i i can't i can't put together basic logic the chances that there's a prescott arizona uh you know what i mean in fairness i'm sure i'm sure there's like how many prescots you think exist in america oh well and dallas not in the playoffs oh ouch that's rough chef that was mean it's true that was sharp you just brought out the knife for that one didn't you he makes tony romo look like troy aikman oh damn keep going you got another one well he makes tony romo look like um you know he belongs back on the field the way he plays sometimes when it matters most let's be real i mean he's a great he's a great story jr i mean god bless him for what he's had to endure with his family and and he's a great regular season quarterback but what are the chances again that there is a prescott arizona that's like if i said there's a murray dallas i'm sure there is no of course not dallas but texas sure right right i'm sure there's like 50 of them no yeah it is how many peach trees you think we got here in atlanta just one no no really no come on peach tree city peach tree circle peach tree northeast man no there's a lot brother a lot gotcha anyway eight five five two one two four cbs that's eight five five two one two four cbs if you thought what you just heard from jonathan gannon was the worst thing that you've ever heard from a coach there has been worse and there is there should be room for optimism because there was a coach who said something uh pretty bad and he was able to turn things around if you don't know who i'm talking about i'll share that with you on the other side and then also i gotta show love to jose altuve this man who's a short man he got a lot of power and he's using it i'll explain what he did later tonight it's the jr sport brief show here with you on cbs sports radio don't move you're listening to the jr sport brief on cbs sports radio you're listening to the jr sport brief on cbs sports radio hey jr how you doing man i appreciate listening to you every night man at work man enjoy and uh appreciate all your insight call in now at eight five five two one two four cbs it is the jr sport brief show here on cbs sports radio everybody loves a little bit of joy right yeah everybody loves joy some people love pain some people love a little bit of both anyway the houston astros specifically jose altuve he is in he is enjoying see enjoying he's enjoying a lot of joy right now because the astros beat the rangers they beat the hell out of the rangers 14 to 1 and how jose altuve this man is on a power trip right now and there isn't a moment that you sit down and watch and play for a diminutive fellow at only five foot six his bat speed and his power ridiculous he homered three times tonight those three homers came in the first three innings of the game up until that point well now just in a general sense at that point he homered in four straight plate appearances five home runs in six plate appearances the astros are 79 and 61 and jose altuve keeps cranking them out of the park how about we listen to not the first but let's just hurry this up let's listen to the second home run courtesy of the astros radio network altuve drives this one out to left center field hit pretty well going back on it is to varis at the wall see you later a home run in the first and now a home run in the second for jose altuve his second straight multi-homer game and the astros lead is four to nothing yeah let's keep it moving that was the second inning what happened in the third i already told you this one's wall up to center field back on it to varis and she's gone third home run for altuve a blast to straight away center field field it's nine nothing astros as altuve goes deep for the third time in the ball game the final score was 14 to 1 this was abuse tonight and then jose altuve spoke about it afterward to at&t sportsnet feels really good obviously you know homers are not easy to hit but thanks god i got a lot between yesterday and today and it could could help my team to win oh that's nice here come the astros again they picked up verlander seattle seems to come back down to earth the rangers are coming back to earth and here come the astros again nice little power surge jose altuve amazing player to watch and a very nice guy too i'm not talking about all that uh don't rip my jersey off stuff i've interviewed jose altuve he is a very very nice guy eight five five two one two four cbs that's eight five five two one two four cbs ralph is calling for miami you're on the jr sport brief show what's going on ralph good afternoon jr thank you very much for every night of your sports show because i get really knowledgeable of everything that you say i use sometimes your point to sometimes to prove people wrong by listening to you every night but to get to my point really quick when it comes to kyla murray i would say right now i don't know because he hasn't proven himself as a captain as a leader yet i don't know why they put him as a captain but yeah i was a big fan of him but last the last two years i was mostly disappointed especially when you don't have hoffkamp in the game don't have hoffkins you don't show no way you could at least deliver the ball but when i my biggest question to you jr before before i hang up and listen to your answer i was listening to an article this year this morning that was mentioning how baseball owners are all looking for a new stadium that's causing them having problems to even expand the team to get like to build more team in there to their field what you think about that it repeat the question that baseball owners are having difficulty doing what no baseball owners are looking to get new stadiums built these days to the point where it's often preventing major league baseball from even expanding to 32 team or even uh if i understand that's partially true one thing that they want to figure out first here's the deal no owner wants to pay for a stadium they want whatever the the local municipality the city the government they want the government to go ahead and pay for it okay and who's paying for it when it comes down to the government the taxpayers and so until major league baseball has an idea where some of the teams that are quote-unquote up in the air are going to play until there's a finalization okay for sure for sure for sure the oakland athletics are going to be in vegas okay what are they going to do are the tampa bay rays going to stay in tampa until there's some some some things settled with some of the existing teams yeah there's not going to be any expansion yeah i understand because i was thinking about what happened to the oakland this year and what the what the mayor said he's just like they could have expanded to vegas but instead of just moving straight to vegas yeah well the who who fisher the owner of oakland and what was it the open moving to no it wasn't at the open i saw her and no but the fact is look none of the owners are ever going to be forthright and they always say these things in coded language and but what what they really want to say is man we want a free stadium we want the taxpayers to pay for it if they ain't paying for it then we going elsewhere but they can't say it that way because that will garner even more attention it ain't no different than a lot of of things that take place in in in politics people will find a way to dance around things and not be straightforward just to look good and safe face because most people have so much going on in their lives they aren't necessarily reading in between the lines and so there's there's a lot of of bad stadium deals that exist that are being proposed and i think for any stadium deal that goes forward we're just in a bad way right now where where cities and taxpayers have been paying for stadiums that to what benefit does it serve you besides the fact that you get a chance to root for your favorite team is is that enough when you got billionaires who can pool their money together and buy and create these things you gotta pay for it sounds like a raw deal to me it's the jr sport brief show here with you on cbs sports radio i told you we heard from jonathan gannon from the arizona cardinals not the worst inspiring speech by a head coach i'm going to share another one with you on the other side of the break and then lebron james he got friends he has friends that are willing to sit down in public and hype him up over michael jordan we're going to hear a few more ridiculous things before we roll out the phone lines are open if you want to give me a call that's eight five five two one two four cbs you're listening to the jr sport brief on cbs sports radio you're listening to the jr sport brief on cbs sports radio god bless wish you well and all the best jr because you really are my favorite sports dj on the air call in now at eight five five two one two four cbs it's the jr sport brief show here with you on cbs sports radio you know before i roll out of here we talked about coco golf and and moving on to a semi-final 19 years old representing the united states of america first and youngest teen to do this since serena williams well about an hour ago for everybody keeping tabs on the men's side ben shelton who's only been a professional for the better part of a year now a florida gator by the way shout outs all the gators out there he just became the youngest american male to reach the us open semifinals since 1992 he is 20 years old so if you want to root for the united states of america here in the world of tennis man you got a reason to with coco golf you got another reason to with ben shelton and he beat francis tiafoe who was the the flavor du jour last year during the us open couldn't get over the hump and here's the deal folks ben shelton he didn't just arrive into a u.s semi-final at 20 years old friday he's gonna take on novak jokovic who is pretty much the most successful male tennis player of all time when you count up all of his trophies novak jokovic hasn't lost to an american since 2016 massive underdog but it's going to be a hell of a match to sit down and watch shelton spoke after the the victory over tiafoe and he pretty much talked about giving it all that he had tonight knocking off francis it was a hot one in here tonight wasn't it guys yeah feeling like i left it all out here tonight uh emotional battle and uh thanks all you guys for staying so late hell of an atmosphere and thanks for pushing me over the line yeah us open taking place in queens new york which has been hot as hell hot and humid and we know the us open also taking place broadcasting on espn he gave a little bit of a preview he was asked about taking on novak jokovic this upcoming friday this what he had to say about that i mean it doesn't get much better than that you know it's been tough the last two matches i've been playing americans but hopefully you guys bring it for me two nights from now well damn it i hope so listen the people the people in queens will be cheering him on i don't know if that's going to make too much of a difference against jokovic they're going to be cheering him on on friday coco golf she's going to be in action in her semifinal matchup on thursday let's see what happens go usa she's 19 he's 20 always talk about how there is no young american tennis players we need to get somebody over the hump well damn it if you got a 19 and 20 year old who are pushing the limits i think it's just a matter of time eight five five two one two four cbs that's eight five five two one two four cbs speaking of a matter of time i did tell you that on the heels of listening to jonathan gannon and his uninspiring uh you know i don't even it's an address to his team he sucked let's listen to that one more time this is jonathan gannon first year head coach of the arizona cardinals what is he talking about welcome back who drove over here quick let me see your hands who took the bus did you have fire in your gut did you we're here for a reason don't get that twisted okay we're here for a reason to win games so if you didn't have that fire in your gut you better light the fire pretty fast be who you are just understand i'm looking for killers who drove who took the bus who has fire in their gut well it might it might turn out positive for him remember when nick sirianni ended up getting the job with the eagles do you remember what he sounded like speaking to the media he tried to explain his entire philosophy philosophy listen to this you know that that you know that that we have to again we have to continue to we have to go through the process here we have to go through the process here we're still we're still in phase the first part of this phase of of getting the right coaches in place to come in and coach the guys right to to that their their core values line up with my core values right and and they're good teachers of fundamentals so we're in that phase right now right then it goes to evaluating the roster but you know this this this team and this this city this organization i'm i'm confident this this is a really there's a talented group uh howie howie and his staff have put together a talented group and just super excited to work with each all the guys here because i know there's a lot of talent in this building okay all right all right simplify the offense and whatever he ended up going to a super bowl and so maybe there's some hope here for the arizona cardinals unlikely having been to a super bowl since what 2009 2008 season and good luck to the arizona cardinals eight five five two one two four cbs that's eight five five two one two four cbs steve is here from houston you're on the jr sport brief show hi jr uh first time caller been listening to you for a long time love your show man thank you what's up i heard you talking giving altuve some love earlier man that sounds great man you know altuve is doing great it's it's amazing how how much he's how much he's hitting and those home runs that he got tonight three home runs and includes four he do the at bat from the night before and the three tonight right after one another it's amazing it's crazy you know how how good they're playing but what's upsetting is like they got swept by the yankees just a couple nights ago what i would like to know is what did dusty say to them to get that fire in their belly to make them do what they did last night and tonight because it's like a totally another team i don't you know i don't think so the astros are like that sometimes you know they kind of slump they kind of they kind of wake up you know that's i'm not too worried about it you know right as you shouldn't but that's that's every team even a good one the new york yankees just won another game uh tonight john carlos danson hit his 400th career home run the yankees have now won four straight games and it was only a week ago where doom and gloom was upon the yankees and now they've brought up the younger players there's a little bit more energy a little bit more excitement as you shouldn't be worried about the astros um they're a team trying to go out and win another championship man i i i'm not sweating them they're just trying to fast forward through the rest of the season get to the postseason and not fall at any point here through the standings so it's good to be in a competitive space i don't think dusty has to say too much more than okay yo yo yo lost and get it together it's really that simple it's a championship squad man true that is true that is true unlike the texans however i am looking forward to demeco ryan's and what he's going to do now i know that's a reason for optimism if they break 500 this year i'll be i'll be very very happy but i don't i don't really believe that yeah well that's like the high point yeah good good luck i don't i don't see that but at least they got a quarterback they got a coach be be hopeful in that thank you steve for calling from houston jason is calling from cleveland you're on the jr sport brief show thanks chair i i liked the uh interview played with coco golf because i i wouldn't think twice about her but hearing her speak yeah i'm gonna root for her you know so that was uh good on you bring more attention to that and uh you know maybe she's what you said she's 20 uh 19 years old yeah so good on that and she spoke like uh someone much wiser than her age so that was a good thing but i just want to talk about uh football and how it is by far the best sport because um there are so many things to look forward to um calling from cleveland you know the browns every year we're always hopeful and then the the whole afc north but even in atlanta your hometown i hope desmond ritter does well i mean there are so many players scared out you want to see what's going on going on and uh i don't know it may be the best soap opera ever written because there are so many storylines and uh i appreciate getting on you know difficult but that's because you're great and everybody wants to chime in and uh great to hear you man well thank you so much jason for calling from cleveland thank you so much for listening ain't no great show without you and every other listener so thank you to you and football great sport hell yeah it is i like them all man so who the hell am i say you know
