The discussion centers around the performance of backup quarterbacks in the NFL, with a focus on Caleb Williams and Jaden Daniels, and how their situations compare to those of other notable quarterbacks, including Brock Purdy, Mac Jones, and Rich Gannon. The conversation also touches on the importance of a supportive environment and the right people in a quarterback's development, as exemplified by Steve Young's experience with the San Francisco 49ers.

Every week on the Moth Podcast, we share stories that are funny, strange, heartbreaking, and above all, true. I myself. have been married for 56 years. Unfortunately to four different women. It turns out the people I was looking for all my life is what you people would call nerds.

Follow and listen to The Moth on the free Odyssey app or wherever you get your podcasts. Hour number two, still no JR. I got the sport brief tonight. Sports machine Sean Levine on the mic. On the Infinity Sports Network.

Got my guy Ryan back in the studio spinning the wheels, feeling good, and we're going to be together for at least three more hours. And then the last guy doesn't show up. I guess I'll just keep talking. 888-710-4ISN is the phone number. We're going to get back into the NFL, specifically the NFC here in just a couple of minutes.

Because I still think that it's Philadelphia. Gap And then whoever's next. But I'm trying to figure out. Who's next? And who else is part of that conversation?

Like, are the Bears part of the playoff conversation? Are the Cowboys? Huh? Part of the playoff conversation? Are the commanders done?

Without Jaden Daniels, by the way, he's going to be. On the sidelines again, which is not a good look for him or for DC. Monday Night Football at Arrowhead, so going to be tough. The commanders to get back to 500, they're three and four right now. We'll get to the football here in just a minute.

Ryan, how good is your like? Were you good at geography? You seem more like a numbers guy to me. Were you a good geography student? I was enough to pass.

Was I, would I say, the smartest person in geography? No, but I was an AP history.

So, I kind of know the areas.

Okay, what about your knowledge of animals? Would you say that's pretty good? Have you been to a zoo? I've been to a zoo, every now and then.

Okay. Um. We're going to see if we can do this together because I've got this list that my buddy sent me of the most deadly animals in each state.

So we're going to start where you are out there, East Coast, in New York. Just take a stab at it. What do you think is the animal that kills the most people? On an annual basis.

So I'm I'm assuming it's somewhere upstate. I'm gonna say Hmm. I'm going to say Yeah. Um Brown bear. Not a terrible guess, I don't think.

I don't think it might be a ridiculous guess. White-tailed deer. A deer is the most deadly animal?

Well, I think, you know, there's probably like a lot of accidents type thing. Anyway, down where the alligators live, it's all down there. That's Louisiana, that's Mississippi, Alabama, Florida. What about Texas? Take a stab at it.

What do you think is the most dangerous animal that kills most people in the state of Texas? Scorpions. That's a great guess. Several hogs. Hawks?

Hog. Oh, hawk. No, not hawks. Hogs. Hogs.

No, not, yeah, no, hawks. Like arch wild. Like a razor. Yeah. Also in Arkansas, by the way, it's the feral hog that kills the most people, Oklahoma and Texas.

And then apparently, there's a bunch of rattlesnake and mountain lion issues out west. Who knew? 888-710-4ISN is the phone number. Beck into football. I assume you came here for the sports talk.

Caleb Williams. I'm looking at his numbers right now. Nine touchdowns to go along with three interceptions. Not too shabby. The numbers that matter the most, and certainly Bears fans are going to agree with this.

Is not the touchdowns, the interceptions, the yards, the QBR, those are all fine. It's the wins and the losses, because at some point, that's what you judge a quarterback on. We've seen a lot of quarterbacks that individually, you just look at them and you go, Yeah, I don't know. Even the greatest of all time, people have their questions for a long time about Tom Brady, but at some point he started winning a bunch of football games, and it wasn't about the I test or where he got drafted or the lack of wide receivers. It was just that guy wins a bunch of football games.

I think I saw he averaged 12 and a half wins per season throughout his career, Tom Brady, which is ridiculous. And I'm not suggesting that that's what Caleb Williams is or is ever going to be, but the facts are the Bears are four and two. And if you remember that first game of the season, this actually just came to mind. They blew it. That was a the Bears who we thought they were.

The Bears should have won that game. And if they win that game, then instead of being 4-2, I don't know if you know this, but they would have been 5-1. And if they were five and one, I know the Bears fans are getting really excited now. pulling their cards over. On Michigan Avenue.

They're like, I like this guy. I like the sports machine guy. If the Bears were five and one, they'd already have a statue outside for Ben Johnson. They would have already renamed the stadium for Caleb Williams, and that's honestly where they should be. The fact they're 4-2, Bears fans have to be ecstatic.

The only problem with the Bears. Is the same problem I thought it was going to be with the Bears heading into this season, which they can't do anything about. Which is the division that they play in. 'Cause that division is Nasty. I don't know if it's as good right now as the NFC West, where you got three teams that are 5-2.

If I ask you right now, who's the best in the West? I mean, I know Tupac said the West side is the best side, and he was right. But I'm asking you who's the best in the West. The 5-2 49ers, the 5-2 Seahawks, the 5-2 Rams. I know it's not the 2-5 Cardinals.

But back to the NFC North. That division is stacked up again like it was last year. When the Bears were losing games last year at one point, the rest of the division was 38-9. 38 and 9.

So even last season Where Caleb was a rookie and they were firing the coach and the coordinator and they were just throwing stuff against the wall, the Bears were. I didn't think they were going to win a bunch of football games. The fact they're four and two right now, I got to tell you, I'm borderline shocked. This team is way better than I thought they were, and Caleb Williams is back on track. Not that he ever got completely off track, but I think what happened last year is we looked at Caleb as a number one pick.

Heisman Trophy winner. Paints his nails, USC, all these. Entertain the comparisons to Patrick Mahomes. And then we actually looked at his production on the field and his growth. And all of a sudden, we started turning our attention to Jaden Daniels.

Where he looked like he was playing at a Pro Bowl level as a rookie leading his team to twelve wins, the playoffs, all the way to an NFC championship game.

So I think a lot of people, Bears fans included, stopped paying attention as much to the shiny object that was Caleb Williams, paid attention to the guy that was tearing the cover off the ball, baseball term for a football guy. Because last year, you could argue that Jaden Daniels was as good of a rookie quarterback as we've ever seen at any point. Especially if you judge those guys on winning football games.

Well, now that we're here in year two. And I know Jaden Daniels is hurt, so I don't want to kick him while he's down. Again, if you're just now finding out, he's going to be out once again for the Monday Night Football game at Arrowhead.

So I'd be surprised the commanders can pull that one off.

So we've seen 17 plus Where seven so we've seen twenty five games As Caleb Williams is a starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears. We've seen, if you want to throw the playoffs in there, about 25 games also from Jaden Daniels. Here's what I'm asking you. Who's going to be better long term? Have you seen enough Bears fans to go Okay, deep breath.

We didn't screw it up. That we didn't Justin Fields ourselves or Mitchell Trubisky ourselves again. We actually got the right guy because I promise you, there were Bears fans heading in this season that were going, uh-oh, what if our guy stinks? What if J.J. McCarthy in division is awesome?

What if Jaden Daniels is awesome? What if Justin Fields, our old quarterback, is awesome? And we're stuck with this guy, Caleb Williams. I don't think Bears fans are saying that right now. I think most Bears fans are going, cool.

Year two Six games into this thing. It's about where I thought it was going to be, if not a little bit ahead of pace. Because I was saying with Ben Johnson, you got to give him a grace period also. He was a coordinator. There's a difference, a big difference between being a coordinator and a head coach.

And now you're head coach of the Bears with this prize possession to go out there and win games right away. That's a lot of pressure. And I didn't think he was going to be able to do it. To me, the Bears are another one of those teams in the NFC, like I was saying, like the Falcons who were 3-3, like the Panthers, who were 4-3, like one of those other teams in the NFC West that doesn't win the division, like the Dallas Cowboys, who are going to end up in the playoffs. We know what the hierarchy looks like.

I think it's still Philadelphia. And then everybody else. I think once we get to the end of the season, that team's going to puff their chest out and remember that they won the Super Bowl last year and beat the breaks off my Chiefs. And then when the playoffs come around, just look at the numbers. Jalen Hurts is one of, if not the best, postseason quarterback in the game right now.

And that includes Patrick Mahomes, who he's out-dueled in two separate Super Bowls.

So the Eagles. I think they got right last week. They're back to 5-2. You look at that division, who's going to catch them? And I'm going to say some nice stuff about the Cowboys here in a couple of minutes, but I don't think the Cowboys are anything better than a, I was going to say nine and eight team, but they've got that tie.

I hate that tie so much. I hate ties in sports. Maybe it's my OCD or being a perfectionist, but that three, three, and one, like, it genuinely pisses me off, puts me in a bad mood. Because I can't just say they're a 9-8 team. I got to go, oh, they're an 8-8 and 1 football team.

That sounds goofy. Anyway. Eagles are going to probably end up 12 and 5, 13 and 4, maybe get the buy, win the division. It's not going to be the Cowboys. The commander is out there, quarterback, probably don't even make the playoffs.

And the Giants, they had a chance. If the Giants would have won that game, moved to three and four, had all this goodwill, we'd be talking about them also. But they blew it. You know what happened in in Denver. And now I think we know how this season's gonna go.

What a curve where at the beginning of the year you went with Russell Wilson. And that was a terrible idea from the go. You sucked. You lost football games. You brought in Jackson Dart.

You won. All of a sudden, people were getting excited. Did the Giants win that game? then their stock is white hot. Brian Dable probably keeps his job, maybe gets an extension.

It's all gravy, baby. That's one of those gut punchers where you don't just lose one game. You might lose the coach, you might lose the season, you might lose the fan base. Damn. Not that I'm a Giants fan, I just like it when teams hang around that we didn't think were going to.

888-710-4ISN is the phone number. So, if I'm going to tell you the Eagles are the best, I'm going to go. Green I'll go Green Bay. Detroit Tampa I think I like the 49ers in the West if you twist my arm only because. If you can win this many football games with Mac Jones, then when Brock Purdy comes back, you would think you're only going to be better.

And the good thing about that is. Purdy has proven that he's better than where he got drafted and the way that we've talked about in the first few years of his career, but he's also often injured. And you don't want that. Like the most valuable thing that a guy can have is ability. Availability, excuse me.

And that's your best ability if you can make it happen. And that's the problem with a lot of quarterbacks right now in the NFL. Who knows how good Cincinnati really is? Who knows how good DC really is? Who knows how good the Vikings really are?

A lot of these teams have been without their starting quarterback. The fact that Mac Jones, who? Mac Jones has led the 49ers to a five and two record Is Outstanding. I didn't think that Kyle Shanahan could possibly find his way into the Coach of the Year conversation, but How can he not do it with a backup quarterback? How many good backup quarterbacks are there in the NFL?

I mean serious. How many quarterbacks do you think if your starter goes down, you can put this guy in for. a month for four games. and give yourself a chance to go two and two. or three in one.

Joe Flacco? Mac Jones? Is that it? Is that the end of the backup list? Am I missing somebody here, Ryan?

I think we thought Jake Browning was that guy, but he ain't. Maybe Minchu on a good week. Maybe. He's got the stash. I like that.

Carson wins. There's just not a lot of them. When your starter goes down in the NFL, you bring in the next dude, and there used to be, remember back in my day, Jeff Hostettler? Phil Sims goes down, Hostettler comes in, win the Super Bowl. My favorite backup of all time.

Rich Gannon.

So the Chiefs? Rich Gannon's last year in Kansas City went thirteen and three and they were the one seed. and they had Elvis Gerbach, who ain't nothing but a hound dogger at quarterback. And he was good enough. This is Marty Ball.

This is back with Neil Smith and Derek Thomas. I think they're running back on these teams. I think it was Priest Holmes. On this team. Anyway, so there were some talent.

Chiefs went 13 and three. Quarterback's numbers, Elvis Gerbach. He was all right. And then at the very end of the game, the Chiefs were playing the Colts. They had home field advantage.

The offense couldn't do anything. They bring Gannon in the last like two drives, and he leads him down the field both times. But ultimately, the Chiefs lose the game. And then at the end of the year, most Chiefs fans were going, Let's just go with the backup. Let's just go with Rich Gannon.

The Chiefs chose to go with Gerback. They let Gannon become a free agent. Gannon gets signed by the Raiders. And he becomes the MVP of the league. The MVP of the NFL, and you were a backup quarterback your entire career.

The only two times I can ever think of that happening were Rich Gannon and Kurt Warner. And Warner was a little bit different. We know his story. He was bagging groceries, playing in the arena league. They called him up.

They're like, hey, man, you want to try out? He comes out. He becomes the quarterback of the greatest show on turf. That's a great story too. But I think I'm going with Rich Gann.

That's my guy. How the hell did that ever happen? How did he ever become good enough that quick to win the MVP? Or how were that many people so blind in the Chiefs organization to not realize that they've got the MVP? It happens sometimes in hoops.

Because it's a little bit different, right? Like one guy's got to dominate the ball. It felt like that way with James Harden. Where when Oklahoma City let him walk, and it was only, I think, four years into his career. I don't think they knew exactly what they had.

Because they had Kevin Durant and because they had a young Russell Westbrook, where The Houston Rockets went, you know what? If we make him the dude, then he can become the beard right away. And then he becomes the four-time scoring champion and three-time MVP, and one of the most lethal scorers of all time.

So, all I'm saying is, just because you're a backup, this just isn't just in sports, this is in life. You know what? If your boss doesn't believe in you, if you think you should have the corner office, but you're stuck in the cubicle, if you want the raise, if you want the title, that's not on you, that's on your boss. Yeah. Don't blame yourself.

That's on upper management. They suck. Except here at the radio station. They're great. 888-710-4ISN is the phone number.

Coming up on the other side, the coaching carousel in college football is as active as I can ever remember it during the season. Let's talk some college ball. Let's talk a little bit of World Series. Seven minutes left in the first quarter nets up over the Hornets eleven to ten. The Hornets have Ball Connipple They should have traded for Grady Dick. I'm so immature. Um segments left. From the uh Ha, my man.

That's Ryan. He'll be here all week. Uh Ha ha ha ha ha ha. They got sexton canipple and ball. There.

Okay, I'm getting excited now. Nick's up 12 to 10 with seven minutes left in the first quarter over the Cavaliers. Heat up 10-6 over the magic. The other games tipping off later on tonight, including Khan Knipple. his college teammate uh a Cooper flag.

Takes on Victor WenbaƱama. What's the line for that game? That game tips off two hours from now. Dallas at the crib. Is a three and a half point favorite.

I don't know what to make of this Mavericks team right now, especially early on with all the Kyrie stuff. All right, phone lines are lit up, so let's take some phone calls. 888-710-4ISN is the phone number. Let's go up to Maryland, where Adrian joins us on the Infinity Sports Network. What up, Adrian?

Adrienne. Adrian Damn it. All right, well, hang up on Adrian.

Sorry, we'll try to get Adrian again. But that did give me a great chance, Ryan, to go Adrian, which I've always wanted to do on the radio. Oh, let's go down to Florida. Larry joins us tonight on the Infinity Sports Network. What up, Larry?

Hello, sir. How you doing? Good to have you, Mark. I just wanted to make I just want to make one thing perfect since you're the perfectionist. The greatest backup quarterback of all time by far Is Earl Morrill.

He took over for Johnny Onidas, won the NFL championship in 1968, won MVP as quarterback in the whole league. Then he takes over for Greasy in seventy two as the backup quarterback when Greasy got hurt in week five, takes them all the way to the Super Bowl. They go undefeated.

So there's only one backup quarterback that that by far has separated himself from any other great backup quarterback in the history of the league. And that's your old moral.

So first of all, Larry, I can't, I can't. No, thank you. And I appreciate that. And thanks for clearing that up. And thanks for calling in.

Larry leaves a line free at 888-710-4ISN. I thought that I could list you off the top of my head the best backups. I thought we kind of started to do that with the whole Rich Gannon. And then, you know, back in the day, there was maybe your guy. Like, even right now, Kirk Cousins, probably one of the better backups.

Uh I wouldn't know the guy he's talking about if he walked in here with a full uniform and his name tag on. And maybe that's on me, or maybe I'm just a victim of the current era. Because that guy went all the way back to this 1968, and he was the backup, and he was the MVP in 1972. Bro, how do you remember all that? I literally can't even tell you what I had for breakfast.

I don't even remember if I had breakfast or not. 888-710-4ISN is the phone number. Actually, I had a cinnamon pop tart. It was fire this morning. Oh, let's go out to LA where David joins us here on the Infinity Sports Network.

What up, David? Hey man, thank you so much for taking my call. I just want to follow up your comment about backup quarterbacks, and you said something about how some of these teams can't see what the backup can be. I want to add that it's also important that the backup finds themselves in the right environment and surrounded by the right people in order to maximize their talent. The prime example I can think about is Steve Young.

Steve Young did not succeed. In Tampa Bay. He was trayed to San Francisco, where he was forced to sit against his own desires. Behind Joe Montana. Bill Walsh knew that while Steve was itching to play, he had to sit behind Joe Montana so that he could get the best.

Out of CD. young. If Steve Young doesn't sit behind Joe Montana, if he's not being tutored by Bill Walsh, if he's not surrounded by that arsenal of a Hall of Fame cast, Steve Young does not eventually become a six-time pass. Passing title leader, league MVP, and Super Bowl MVP. And he said this himself, you know, in the in the video uh in the uh in the Americas game episode.

About the 9449er. He said, Look, I was being surrounded by all this talent. I was being trained to be great, and I got to see how good I could be. I don't doubt that if Steve Young found himself in a different situation, his circumstances end up completely differently.

So the surrounding cast, the environment, all that matters. Dude, you said that beautifully. And that's not just in football. That's in life. How good is your boss?

How good are your co-workers, right? Like what kind of resources do they give you? You're a million percent right. Do you remember, David?

So there was a Monday night football game where it was Montana and then it went back to Steve Young and they got off to a hot start. And then Montana came back, but not until like the second half for some reason. I want to say it was on Monday night football. That might have been the deepest quarterback room in the history of the NFL when they had Steve Young and Joe Montana at the same time in their prime. Yeah.

Yeah, there's gonna be. I don't remember that game in particular, but I know there's probably not ever gonna be a situation like that ever again where one Hall of Famer. hands the reins off. To another Hall of Famer immediately down to the market. Farr did it with Aaron Rodgers, and Aaron Rodgers, and thanks for the phone call, man.

Go ahead. That was kind of more of a different situation where, like, you know, Aaron Rodgers was drafted to be Favre's successor. Steve Young was drafted. I don't think he was brought into San Francisco to kind of be Joe Montana's successor. I think he was brought in to push Joe Montana, and it worked because Joe won two more Super Bowls with Steve sitting behind him.

Great call, bro. I appreciate that. 888-710-4ISN is the phone number. Sometimes you forget things until people bring them up, and then you're like, oh, yeah, I knew that. Until he said that Steve Young played for Tampa Bay.

I had completely. Men in black erased that thing from my memory. I completely forgot about that. And he's right. Every now, you could say that, well, sports machine.

What about your guy, Patrick Mahomes? You know what I'm talking about when I say a backup. Mohames wasn't a backup. Mahomes was a top 10 draft pick, and the plan was: all right, we got this veteran, Alex Smith, where we can sit this guy for a year and then, bam, put him on the field, and he'll be ready to go. And not for nothing, while we're talking about quarterbacks landing in a perfect situation.

Andy Reid's your head coach. Kareem Hunt was coming off the rushing championship the first year that Mahomes was a starting quarterback. He got to throw the ball to Tyria Kill on one side and Sammy Watkins on the other. Not that Sammy Watkins is great, but Tyreea Kill's a top 10 all-time wide receiver. Who's your tight end?

You probably heard of him. What's that guy's name? Taylor Zwiss boyfriend. I'm just saying. Yeah, Kelsey, that's it.

Thank you.

So sometimes, sometimes just people. Land in great situations in sports and in life, and that completely determines your outlook the rest of the way. And so I don't know how it got down this road, but with backups in the NFL, it's different if you're Patrick Mahomes or if you're Aaron Rodgers or if you're a real backup like Jake Browning sitting behind Joe Burrow. Burrow goes down.

Now you got your shot.

Well, buddy, you stink.

Well, you know, based on NFL. expectations. We're going to call Joe Flacco. We thought Carson Wentz was good until he's actually on the field. To me, there's like two backups that can actually take the field in 2025 that you feel okay about as a fan.

Joe Flacco. Mac Jones And I don't even know if Mac Jones is truly a backup quarterback. I think he's going to probably. Play as a starter most of his career. Hell, if you're San Francisco, you're maybe asking yourself, is he better?

Do we make Brock Purdy a very, very, very expensive backup? 888-710-4ISN is the number. Oh, in my backyard, Greg joins us here in Kansas on the Infinity Sports Network. What up, Greg? Hey.

How you doing? What's up? Hey, uh A little backstory on that Elvis Gervack, uh, Rich Gannon thing. Yeah. Elvis Gervack was so-so, he gets injured.

Yannon comes in and he goes six and one. And then Gromach gets Yeah. And so we already know. Marty Martin goes, Well, he was dissolved when he got injured.

well, that Earl Moral Greasy thing was the same thing, but Remember, Greg? He said, Marty, that's when Marty said, and this is the first time I can remember a coach saying that you can't lose your job to injury. And it's like, why? Why? But get this: the reason, the real reason Burmat got to play.

GM Carl Peterson Germack was his daughter's boyfriend. Is that real? Ha ha ha. Is that real? I mean, and I'll and takes the phone call.

I'll have to do a little bit of research on that one. I'll have to see if the internet agrees with that because I'm a Kansas City guy through and through, and I never heard that. I was once on an elevator with Carl Peterson, and I thought he was going to choke me out. I was It was in Indianapolis, the doors. Carl Peterson, he's the old chief's general manager.

I got a deep voice, and this guy's voice is like twice as deep as mine. Kind of look like a mobster. And I remember it was one of those glass elevators that at night, it was a nice enough hotel where the Chiefs were staying there. I don't know why my family was staying there also. and the elevator door's open.

Carl Peterson opened and I get in with him and he goes, Hit the button, son.

So I'm looking for the lobby button. But I'm also like in a little bit of shock because there's Carl Peterson right next to me. And he goes, I said, hit the lobby button, son. There's like 80 buttons on the damn thing. I panicked.

I hit level two and level three. I think me and Carl Peterson might actually have beef. 888-710-4ISN is the phone number. We'll get back into the football here. We got two and a half hours and change left, so we'll talk plenty of NFL.

Let me get you updated real quick on these basketball scores. Rich is going to get you your full update about five minutes from now. Knicks have the lead over the Cavs, three minutes left in the first quarter, 19-16. The Nets with that no-name roster, 21-20 up over the Hornets in the first quarter of that game in Chilot. And the Heat, 23, make it 24-19.

Over the magic halfway through the first quarter. The next game to tip off, tips off right, right. Nah, right now. That's the Raptors at the Hawks, the 76ers at the Celtics, Pistons at the Bulls, Pelicans at the Grizzlies, Wizards at the Bucs. Then we got a bunch more games coming up tonight.

As far as the baseball goes, I don't want to completely abandon the baseball because we do have ourselves a World Series. If nobody told you, it is going to be the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the Toronto Blue Jays. This is a a battle of Obviously. On one side. We all knew, we all thought, even before they played one game this year, that the Dodgers were probably going to win close to 100 games, that Otani was probably going to win the MVP, and when the World Series came around, the Dodgers were probably going to be there again.

It was a very safe bet. And all those things are true. They didn't win 100 games, but they ended up winning the division. Otani's the runaway MVP. That game that he had the other night, I was on the radio for that.

So I don't need to talk about that again for another two hours. I did that the other day. That's got to be the best individual performance, not just on a baseball field, but on any professional field that anybody's ever had. Three home runs. You're also on the mound for 10 strikeouts in a game that sends you to the World Series.

Damn. So, nobody's surprised the Dodgers are doing that. Toronto, let's be real. If they can pull this off and win four more games, become one of the most unlikely World Series champions. Ever?

At least in a long ass time. Most of the time, the baseball season is so long. The cream rise to the top. We look up. It's the Yankees.

It's the Dodgers. It's the big market teams. This is kind of out of nowhere. Not that Toronto is a small market team. If you've ever been to Toronto, it's a big ass city.

But even in their own division, they were picked to finish in last place. If they can pull this thing off. And somehow beat the Dodgers and become the champions. Who saw that one coming? 888-710-4ISN is the phone number.

Let's go down to Florida where Jim joins us on the Infinity Sports Network. What up, Jim? Hey guys, thanks for making my call. Sure. I have to I have to say, the previous caller, I think Is completely correct when you say.

Oh no. Really? No. I mean guys Seventeen and another season that's gonna happen without 'em. I'm looking at his numbers right now.

He had 63 touchdowns to 36 interceptions. Dude threw four. Oh, I'm sorry. That was his QBR. He had 161 touchdowns to 148 interceptions, and he completed 56% of his passes.

That was his record. He was 63 and 36 overall. Yeah, this dude could ball, huh?

Well It's not a question of that. We're talking about one seed backup quarterbacks, right? I thought that's what we were talking about. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Okay. Well, he came in during a season. Oh, by the way, they went did go undefeated. I mean I'm sorry? I was just giving it size out because I was like, I don't know.

I was surprised. He's like Baker Mayfield size. This is my guy. No disrespect. A different game back then, but you have to still realize Bob Greasy.

out of Purdue, came to Miami. It was the the yeah, the Golden Boy. The old man Earl Morrill came in and got them to that seventeen and no season. I wouldn't have thought that this guy had this kind of support. This is crazy.

I'm up against the sports update, so I got to let you go. Uh so three times through bull champion. Two-time Pro Bowler. MVP of the league in nineteen sixty eight, MVP of the playoffs the same year. I wow, who knew?

Maybe I need to stop paying so much attention to current events and take some of my history classes here. Earl Morrell, who knew? Best backup quarterback of all time? No disrespect, Jeff Hostettler. Yeah.

Rich Gannon? Love me some rich cannon. I'm looking at the college football championship odds. I've got a couple of minutes left, and we're going down this football road. No surprise, Ohio State is the favorite, right?

Plus 270. They were the preseason. Co-champion. with Texas and Texas is no longer there. Ohio State, like I said, plus 270.

Guess who's next as far as national championship odds right now? If you said Alabama You are correct. 7-1 odds. They lost to Florida State. Think about how different both those teams have been since that game.

Florida State was on top of the world, and they were back in the top 10, and they just beat Alabama. It's all gravy, baby. Have they won a game since? They suck like a Hoover vacuum. And Alabama's beat up on everybody since.

A little bit surprising. Not that Ohio State's the favorite, but that Alabama's next. Even more surprising, guess who's got the third shortest odds? to win the national championship. He said to win the national championship.

Indiana. Yep, the Indiana Hoosiers at 9-1 odds. And then the rest probably won't surprise you. Oregon, 10-1. AM 10-1.

This team's for real. Georgia's got 11-1 odds. Notre Dame back at 15-1. Miami, 15-1. Then you get into the long shots.

I was talking about Texas. The Longhorns already down to 30-1. Same thing with Oklahoma. How about Vanderbilt? Sprinkle a couple of bucks on the doors, 33 to 1.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying. I'll take one more phone call. Can I sneak in one more phone call, Ryan, or you want me to do the sports update? You're the executive producer. All right.

He made the executive decision.

So Zach, stay with us. I got to get in a sports flash and then I'll get to you. But first, my guy, Rich Ackerman. Listen up football fans, you won't want to miss this. Right now, new BET365 customers bet $5 and get $200 in bonus bets win or lose.

Hey everyone, I'm Josh Radner, and I am so excited to tell you about How We Made Your Mother, a rewatch podcast looking back at how I met your mother. And I'm here with Craig Thomas, who co-created the show along with Carter Bays. Hi, Craig. Hey, Josh.

Somehow, it has been 20 years since the show premiered. That's, I'm going to check the math on that. 10 years since it went off the air. And we thought that made this a perfect time to look back, see what the hell we did, and why the show still seems to resonate with fans around the world today. Right Chia on the Infinity Sports Network. The number's 888-710. For ISN, I was watching the ALCS a couple of nights ago. Toronto and Seattle, we know what happened. And a commercial came on that caught my attention.

It was a Google commercial.

So I'd assume that it has some sort of factual base to it, but I don't know. I'm just assuming that. And it talks about. Maybe you saw this one, Ryan. Did you see the commercial?

about the uh the rally cap. You know the one I'm talking about by chance? Are they taking a phone call? Maybe you know what I'm talking about. A number pops up on the screen.

that says historically those that wear rowdy caps, Have a 3% better chance of their team coming back and winning the game. Than those that don't. Oh, okay, I heard it. I was on the call. But you're talking about the Capital One or is it Baseball Metrics commercial?

I think it's a Google commercial, but you know the commercial I'm talking about. It's all fake. It has to be fake. Yeah, th th th it's a it's a parody. Oh, those are actual stats.

All right. Dude, I was about to have a stroke live on the radio. I was like, there's absolutely no way. And I'm somebody that believes in superstition. Like, Rumor has it, my grandpa told me, and I don't know if this is true.

But my grandpa told me that my Uncle Ed. Who we sat and watched probably 50 Chiefs games together. It was Aunt Loretta, Uncle Ed, Paul, and me. Like, that was the four of us that would go to these games. He said that Uncle Ed.

War depends. He wore diapers because he thought that if the Chiefs had the lead, going to the bathroom in the middle of the game was bad luck. And I don't know if that's true or not. I never saw the diapers, but I also never saw Uncle Led use the bathroom when the Chiefs had elite.

So maybe my grandpa was being real. I don't know. I'm not knocking him. 888-710-4ISN is the phone number. Okay, I'm kind of knocking him.

Like on a cold day, bro, instead of just getting up and going like a man and facing the troth and coming back down those. stairs, you're just gonna go? And just let it freeze right there on your body. What's the matter with you? And that's the anyway.

Give me some beats. Let's play a game. We got a few minutes left. Get rid of one. You know how we do.

I give you four choices, Ryan, but you, well, you gotta get rid of one. The Falcons, just the rest of this year, the Falcons. The Cowboys. The Bears. The Vikings.

I'm getting rid of the Vikings. I know they probably have the second best wide receiver in football. But I really don't see it with either Carson Wentz. Or JJ McCarthy. I think they played Well, the first few games, but it's all going to unravel.

I don't think McCarthy is a starting caliber quarterback right now. It's so weird what the Minnesota Vikings decided to do because not that many teams. can actually get to or win a Super Bowl. Even if it's just some random year like they had last year where they went 14 and 3 with Sam Donald, it was kind of an afterthought. The truth is, once you win 14 games during the regular season, forget about the fact that he was a backup and a cheap option and not the guy.

None of that matters. Once you win 14 games in the history of the NFL, you're automatically part of the Super Bowl conversation. You don't win 14 games and don't give yourself a shot.

So their window is open. And then they decide to trade their quarterback.

Well, not trade, to let him walk as a free agent because they drafted J.J. McCarthy the year before. Here's what I would have done. And I'm not just saying this in hindsight, I was saying this. Before they made the move, I would have just paid Sam Don, I would have overpaid him.

I would have brought Sam Donald and his agent in and said, What's your number? And they would have said, I'm just throwing stuff out there. We want $40 million for four years. And then I would come back if I'm the Minnesota Vikings and I'd say, well, we're not going to give you $160 million, probably $100 guaranteed, which is pretty close to what he ended up getting in Seattle, but we will overpay you for a two-year deal. We'll give you $100 million for the next two years while our window is open.

Can you imagine, Vikings fan? how different the team would look and how optimistic you would be about this team. Great coach, good defense. Just like Ryan Zed, probably the second best wide receiver in the NFL. And a quarterback that, no matter who it is, is not ready to go right now when you could have had Sam Donald.

That was a That was a very short-sighted move for Minnesota to make. I think that I would also get rid of them because all those other teams-Falcons, Bears, Boys, Minnesota. Might end up in the playoffs. The NBA season started. I don't know if anybody told you.

This year. Get rid of one. Anthony Edwards. Donovan Mitchell. Devin Booker LeBron James.

You gotta get rid of Devin Booker, right? They have to be the least competitive team there. And not to mention you could argue that Every other player on that list is an elevator. And he They uplift the team while Devin Booker is just a stat giver. And he really.

Oh, no, man. That's kind of disrespecting Devin Booker. He led the great team to the finals a couple of years ago. Yeah, but you had the veteran leadership of Chris Paul. You had Mikhail Bridges and Cam Johnson, who were.

Pretty good. DeAndre Eaton was DeAndre Eaton. You're making some good points. Yeah. It's just he could score.

Although, how did that happen last year? And I'm not just going to blame Kevin Durant. Part of that, I guess, is on Devin Booker, but I think. I know it sounds taboo. I'm going to get rid of this version of LeBron only because do we know that he's not going to get old right in front of our face?

Do we know that he's going to be on the court for more than half the year? When you're 40 years old and 23 of those years have been on a basketball court in the NBA, at some point you're going to hit the wall. I'll just go because of age, man. I think I'm going to keep Ant-Man Mitchell and Devin Booker and say, LeBron. This sounds crazy, but you gotta go.

Um, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, Jaden Daniels, Patrick Mahomes. Get rid of one. Gene Daniels, just because he's in the sophomore slump. And if I'm really looking at what Baker Mayfield's done, versus Jaden Daniels this year. I know McLaurin's been hurt, Debo's been hurt, but Baker Is doing the same thing.

No Mike Evans, no Godwin. Eggbuka misses some time. Yeah, you gotta you gotta get rid of Jaden Daniel. Aboke is a stud, isn't he? Um, would uh...

Would it be crazy to think that we look back five years from now, Ryan, and Caleb Williams is a better quarterback than Jaden Daniels. I don't know his peak. Is it going to be better than rookie year Jaden Daniels? I don't know. But is he going to be a current?

better quarterback? I could see that happening. That's interesting what you decided to do there to compare it to his rookie year.

Well, you would think that Jaden Daniels, that's not going to be the best we ever see of him. He's going to get better. You're right about his sophomore slump and the team and he's been injured. And frankly, I saw this one coming. Not to pat myself on the back, I think a lot of people, because they went 12 and 5 last year, DC did, and made it to a championship game.

So if you thought they were going to take the next step, you're basically saying they're going to play in the Super Bowl and they're going to win 13 or 14 games. I didn't believe that.

So I wouldn't be surprised if they go 8-9, 9-8, maybe make the playoffs. But five years from now, it's 50-50. Who's the better quarterback, honestly? Um get rid of one. The Nike shoes back in the day that said air on the side, you know what I'm talking about.

Yeah. The original Reebok pumps. Chuck Taylors Starberries. Get rid of one. I got to get rid of Chuck Taylors.

I just, not my style. Of all of those, I'm the most likely to not wear Chuck Taylors. Here's my problem with Chuck Taylors. I actually like the look, but I can't ball in them. There's no ankle support.

Every single time, but I'm rolling my ankles. And the Starberries, yeah, they were cheap, but they were kind of bangers. The Reebok pumps, have you ever owned a pair of pumps, Ryan? No, I haven't. This is also like a little bit out of my.

And I respect you giving it a shot. The Reebok pumps were A lot more bark than bite. Like, did it punk? A little bit. Did it really affect anything?

I'm not sure. Highlights, NFL players, just the highlights. Devin Hester. Dion Sanders Barry Sanders Reggie Bush. Get it with Reggie Bush.

I just I think the other three You can throw in a highlight package on returns. You can have Dee on both sides of the ball, and then Barry Sanders. Barry Sanders. I must have going college, Reggie Bush. That might be a great highlight package.

I once tore my ACL watching Barry Sanders' highlights on YouTube, just laying in bed. Like the fact that he could shift his upper body. A complete, I was going to say a 180, but I don't know if that's a 180 because I don't know those type of things. Just a total different direction, cut on a dime. The fact that he had all those rushing yards and also all the negative rushes, which are even better highlights.

Like, yeah, I'm not getting rid of Barry or Sanders. Deion high-stepping from midfield is incredible. Reggie Bush in college, bro. I think I'm getting rid of Devin Hester. Last one.

Get rid of one. Mike Trout's career, Price Harper. Aaron Judge. Albert Pools. It's easily Bryce Harper, right?

Whoa, no rings. Was it one? Two immediately? None of these guys have rings except for pools. Strap doesn't have a ring.

Judge don't got a ring. When you look at it. They have more MVPs, I'm pretty sure. Yeah. And They just contribute.

I I don't want to disrespect Harper like that, but. when you look at the greatness of them, I just Let me try to help you. Is it consistency? Because that's my problem with Bryce Harper: he's got a lot of years, if you look up and down, that were kind of like this one where he hits in the 260s with 70-something RBI, and you can't look at those numbers and compare it to a guy that hits 460. 320, 330 year in, year out, like Albert Pools did, knocks in 135 are beyond the regular.

It's just the production doesn't even compare.

So we're not getting rid of Pools. Aaron Judge, in my opinion, is already the best home run hitter of all time. And I'm talking about single season. I'm talking about career. I'm talking about if I need one guy at the bat.

And if you're thinking, well, what about Barry Bonds? I'm talking about guys that we think, we think, we think. are clean I don't need to see any more. I already think that Aaron Judge is the best home run hitter of all time. Although he's probably not going to get a ring.

Dude's been in the league now for 10 years, and he's not getting any younger. And dude, my trout, I just don't know. Obviously, he's got the complete package, but what's the game? What's the hit? What's the throw?

What are you really going to remember about Mike Trout? He's going to have the most invisible. unremarkable, unmemorable superstar career of anybody. Two hours down, two more coming up. I'm the sports machine Sean Levine.
