And we certainly spoke in great detail in the first hour about the shocking departure of Bruce Pearl. I believe it is a retirement that makes zero sense on multiple levels.
And then, of course, we spoke in great detail about. Nick Bosa, unfortunately, being out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL and for a 49ers team that was going in the absolute right direction and with a backup quarterback the last two weeks, for this news to come across is incredibly disappointing and devastating almost. I was going to say saddening, and then I thought devastating, and then I was like, you know what? It's a little bit of a reach to call it devastating. But in terms of football news, for 49ers fans, this is the exact opposite of what you wanted to hear based on the MRI.
This hour, we're going to get into the Chicago Bears and how Caleb Williams is going to be. The franchise-altering quarterback that they have so desperately sought for not years, decades. We will get into the absolute bounce back of the Kansas City Chiefs. But before we get into those particular conversations, we've had Zach in Pennsylvania waiting for quite some time, and Zach wants to weigh in on what we were discussing about in terms of not just the legacy of Bruce Pearl, the head coach, but the timing of him. stepping down as head coach, knowing that there is literally five weeks until the regular season, and his son Stephen, with no experience to his name as a head coach, is stepping in for a no-win situation.
Zach, how you doing and what you got for us? Um Mr. Shepherd. Wait, time out, time out. Is this the Zach who I think it is?
This is Zach from Pennsylvania?
Okay, I don't know if this is Zach from Pennsylvania. If it's the guy I'm thinking of, he can absolutely ball his tail off in the sport of basketball and has been a star high school basketball player and a brilliant mind in whatever he chooses to pursue. But I digress. Go ahead, my friend. Yeah, I was actually going to ask you about the Bruce Pearl situation.
And what you thought about them just hiring his son. Yeah, I mean it's a it's a fair question if I'm being honest Zach and I'm sure you know you would agree with this There's not much I have to go on He's got no head coaching experience. Yeah, he was a former player But you know listen, I mean he was a player because of who his dad was I mean who are we kidding and and he's an associate head coach So I would be lying through my teeth if I told you one way or the other how he's gonna do because it's a virtual unknown. He's never done this before.
Now, did he learn from one of the elite head coaches and one of the premier personalities that we have seen in college hoops in the last 25 years? Absolutely. But this isn't a situation. like a John Shire. Who inherited Duke?
But John Shire was a coach on the floor for his four years as a blue devil. He was their captain. He was a national champion.
So even though he wasn't necessarily ever a head coach, he was equivalent to a coach because he was an extension of Coach K for those four years. Steven Pearl, very different story. I can't recall one single moment of his playing career, and there's not one single moment I can recall of his associate head coach career. And I wish him the best. Don't get me wrong.
I just don't have a tangible, steadfast answer for you, Zach. And I respect you too much to just completely BS you right now. You know what I mean? Yeah, I completely understand. Uh Okay, well to maybe uh change the topic a little bit um I wanted to ask you.
Just to pick your basketball brain about Um, this new player I've discovered, his name is Hugo Duran. You are too funny, you are too funny. Oh my god, okay, so let me tell you something about Hugo Duran, and I don't know how many people know the name Hugo Duran. That guy is a stud. Uh, that guy is an assassin in terms of his playing ability, he's an incredible soccer player, he's an incredible basketball player.
It's like having a second coach on the floor, and now I know this is the Zach I'm thinking of. And hey, man, for real, I cannot wait to be back with you guys this season. And I'm so proud of everything you've done and what you're gonna accomplish in your senior year. And it's a pleasure to hear from you, brother. I did not think you were going to call this show, but I'm thrilled for what is in front of you.
For your final year of high school, man. And I'm rooting for you, man. I know you guys want that state championship, and I know you've been at it for quite some time. And by the way, let me say this: it is not easy to call a national radio show and be as smooth as you are on the air. You know you've got a future in this, right?

Okay. He's a star basketball player at the high school.
So, I mean, you've worked on a DA show forever. You know how they had like a running joke that I was a JV basketball head coach? And they used to make fun of me for it?
Okay, wait.
So, was he on the team?
Well, I used to coach him. I don't coach varsity. He's moved up.
Okay, okay. But I used to coach him a while ago. He's obviously ascended ever since. Um Is his name Hugo or is that? No, no, no, no, no.
His name is not Hugo. But he's one of the four he's one of my former players that I coached on that JV basketball squad. And I didn't know, and I see Zach from Pennsylvania. He's not, obviously, I don't coach in Pennsylvania.
Well, yeah, no, because I got the.
Okay, if I'm gonna be completely honest, go for it. When I saw Zach. When you said Zach, my brain didn't automatically go towards. When a player, somebody you know, I thought I was thinking Gelb. 'Cause it was a local phone number that called.
Right.
So I was like, oh, nine one seven, that's New York. I thought it was a prank call. Yeah, but Zach and I are on. Gelvin and I are on very good terms these days. I don't think he pranks me.
He's known to do some pranks. No, no, no, no, I don't. But I don't. When does he ever prank JR? But he knew you were hosting.
I understand that. But he never pranks JR. No. No. So I.
I like where Zach and I are at these days.
So I don't think he would do that. I know. Plus, the guy hosts six days a week and he does compass media network work as well. He's not busy enough? Hey, I'm just saying.
Local number, his name is Zach. And it sounded like he had sniffles. Right.
Zach told me his voice was heard. I was like, okay. There's a lot of connecting dots. I was listening to Zach. He didn't sound like he did.
He told me his voice wasn't doing great today, all fair.
So I was like, okay. Gotcha. Suspicious of the phone call. I didn't know it was one of the players you've coached. Yeah, I didn't know either until I didn't know either.
And I'm because he sounds older than he used to.
So I couldn't tell if that was the Zach that I thought it was. But it's great to hear from you, Zach. Speaking of guys that continue to ascend. We gotta give a shout out. And some love to Catholic Williams.
He. balled out on Sunday. like the franchise altering quarterback. that we have suspected him becoming and stepping into for quite some time. That was the best performance of his young NFL career.
Now You talk about Caleb Williams. Man. Unbelievable what he was able to do right away. And that's what I really respect about. what Chicago did against Dallas.
They weren't waiting to get going. They got after it right away. And it's why he had multiple passing touchdowns go along with 135 passing yards. in less than four minutes of game action. That is called showing up with a purpose.
and not letting anything hold you back. And he was able to pick up on the blitz right away. And that's an underrated aspect of his game, his vision. His football IQ. To pick up on when a defensive package is in disguise and when they're actually coming after him at full force.
I thought he was unbelievable at being able to pick up on that disguise. And they got a young stud, speaking of young studs, in Rome Odunze. And for the first particular touchdown, 35 yards, of course, to one of, if not his, new favorite target, Aroma Dunze. This made it 7-0 early in the first quarter. And of course, you know, this is all courtesy of the Bears Radio Network.
Snap back, Caleb gonna throw down the left sideway, open it to 10 to the 5. Adunje! Touchdown. Touchdown bear. Yeah.
To the house. Wide open, beating his man in coverage. And it's Tervon Diggs who's been having some issues. Sick this week, also a sore knee. Trying to work back from surgery.
Smoked him. That's a good way to end that particular clip, Smoked him. What you also love about Caleb Williams is on the second particular touchdown pass, this time to Luther Burden III. It was a really well Play call, awesome play design by Ben Johnson, the famous flea flicker. Caleb Williams didn't have a whole lot of time to step into that throw, but because of the arm strength, because of how much leverage he can get from his torso, from his lower extremity.
He flew. that football and this touchdown pass you're about to hear, which gave them 14 early points, not even midway through the first quarter, this particular flight of the football went more than sixty two yards in the air. That's what Caleb can do for you. Take a listen. One safety back deep here is the pitch, the swift tosses it back to Caleb Williams.
Looking deep down the left side, going for Luther burning over. the shoulder 2010. End zone! Touchdown! Touchdown Bears!
You know, it's the famous stat about the Chicago Bears, or I should say the infamous stat, is they've never had a 4,000-yard passer in the franchise's history.
Well, you're going to have to have a new stat after 2025 because that will come to fruition. with Caleb Williams. There is no quarterback right now. That has thrown for more touchdowns than Caleb Williams. And if you look at the first twenty games of his career, I hope this truly pinpoints and puts into perspective what he's been able to produce.
And what he has been able to yield in terms of stats and productivity. in 20 games in Chicago. twenty seven passing touchdowns, seven interceptions, four thousand three hundred and sixty five yards to go along with 586 rushing yards.
Now I want you to compare these particular numbers to the greatest quarterback that the game has ever seen and I don't think there is an argument. for anyone else in this conversation, and that is, of course, Tom Brady. Tom Brady's first 20 NFL games. 24 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 3,822 passing yards, and 60 rushing yards. In every single major statistical passing category Caleb Williams, his 20 starts versus the GOATs' first 20 starts, blows Tom Brady.
out of the water. And when it comes to Caleb Williams' ability As a rusher? It's not even Night and day? It's like a universe. Versus a needle in the haystack in terms of the disproportionate measurement when it comes to Caleb as a rushing quarterback compared to the statue.
That was Tom Brady. Here's the point, folks. Caleb Williams' numbers They make Tom Brady looked like he didn't belong. in the same league.
So many more passing touchdowns, so fewer interceptions.
So, Caleb, not only, Is able to make throws in his early 20s that Brady was not able to make. But the decision making. Behind Caleb Williams was significantly better than Tom Brady. Otherwise, Brady doesn't have double the interceptions. but you're going to say, well, wait a minute, Shep.
We got to keep this real, we got to keep it 100, we got to be objective, we have to be pragmatic, we have to be rational. You can't forget the winds, Caleb Williams, he won five games as a rookie. Still one and two as a sophomore. Brady? We know what he did.
He not only usurped Drew Bledsoe as the starting quarterback, but he won New England their first Super Bowl in franchise history.
Okay. That's part of the equation. I understand that. Who was coaching Brady? Who was coaching him?
It was Bill Belichick, was it not? Was Bill Belichick the only reason that the Cleveland Browns had success in the 1990s? You better believe it. Was Bill Belichick the genius and the brains behind the Giants winning two Super Bowls? And early before Eli Manning, late 80s and early 90s, yes he was.
Who was the Patriots offense coordinator? Oh yeah. Charlie Weiss. one of the most brilliant offensive minds the NFL had in the early two thousands. What was Caleb Williams stuck with?
Matt Eberflus? How did Matt Ebelus do as a head coach? Not even with Caleb before. with Justin. He stuck up the joint.
I don't know who he knew that allowed him to even get a year three. He was so bad he was fired midway. through his third season. What about Shane Waldron? You gonna compare him to Charlie Weiss?
There is never a sentence that has ever come out of anyone's mouth comparing Bill Belichick to Matt Hiberflus and then Charlie Weiss to Shane Waldron. Let's keep it 100 about this. Caleb Williams, the Bears were losing before he got there, so let's be fair. It's not like he got there and all of a sudden they started losing. The losses, my point is, they don't fall on Caleb Williams.
It was the organization. It was the infrastructure. It was the personnel. It wasn't because of the number one overall draft pick. Because that number one overall draft pick, He won a Heisman over Bryce Young and C.
J. Stroud when those guys were the respective number one and number two pick of the draft that very year. Caleb Williams is the reason. why Chicago was going to be relevant. He can make any throw on the field.
He can take off with the football better than any quarterback, not name Jaden Daniels, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts. He has every single tool and gift you can want in a starting quarterback.
Now if you want to question leadership, that's a new conversation and a novel point, and I will understand where you're coming from on that. We can have we can entertain that dialogue. But you cannot diminish, you cannot slam the skill set, you cannot bury him when it comes to being. an ultra super talented quarterback that has franchise altering ways all over him. And you saw that.
When he threw For a career high, four passing time. touchdowns. Against The Dallas Cowboys. And he was on a roll where he would have thrown for 400, 500 yards had the game not been completely over early on in the second half. Because remember, The reason the Bears are one and two is because they have mismanaged Every single aspect.
of football. for the better part of a decade. Really, since Matt Nagy made the playoffs, they have been irrelevant. And they almost ruined Justin Fields. And because of Caleb's talent, He's going to be able to overcome all that.
But it ain't easy. It ain't easy when you've only played twenty career games and you're already on your third head coach and your third damn offensive coordinator.
So let's cut this kid some slack and then celebrate when he does go off, which he did yesterday. And here's what you also need to keep in mind about Caleb Williams. Context matters and so do facts. Caleb Williams was not the individual that gave up twenty one fourth quarter points to a rookie quarterback in JJ McCarthy who's played just one good quarter in s eight NFL quarters that he's played in. They made JJ McCarthy look like he was Brett Favre in his prime.
You're not supposed to allow 21 unanswered points to a rookie at your place? That's exactly what Chicago did. And so, yeah, Caleb struggled in week one, in the second half. I'll give you that. But he was also the guy that got off to that 10 of 10 start and gave you enough points where you should have had a comfortable lead against a rookie quarterback.
And then you look at week two. Caleb played even better. Caleb Williams wasn't the individual that decided to give up fifty two points to the Detroit Lions. You think that loss is on Caleb? You put Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen and asked them to put on their cape, they wouldn't have beat the Detroit Lions, giving up fifty two points as a defense.
And by the way, that first week in which Caleb Williams was getting raked over the Coles, and completely slammed and buried and left for dead? He became the first Bears quarterback In the last 20 years. To have an opening game of an NFL regular season and not just throw a passing touchdown, but rush. for a touchdown as well.
So I love That so many people and you heard this conversation on other networks especially Saying, hey. He's got till Thanksgiving. And then you got to move on to Tyson Bajan. No one's talking about that after Sunday. Because what you witnessed on Sunday is a lot more reflective Of what is going to happen.
And the immediate future. He's a star.
Now Do I agree with every one of his decisions when it comes to his leadership abilities? And what he chooses to wear? The second part, that's none of my business. The first part? Yeah.
You'd like to see a guy who takes criticism a little more to heart and maturely and doesn't allow it to get him down. And change the body language, you'd like to see the maturity in that regard. be a little m you know, more uh you know, his age appropriate. Right? You don't love all the things that he said in college about wanting to go home and play with his puppy and wanting to be around his family after a tough loss.
Did it reveal uh a little bit of uh someone who wasn't necessarily the most confident person in the world and someone who didn't necessarily have their head on straight and their priorities intact?
Okay. That's a different conversation. But you would have thought the way he performed in the first two weeks he was the worst starting quarterback in the NFL when the numbers, the film and the tape suggested otherwise. And I'm not the only one. that believes in Caleb Williams and what he's going to bring to the table when it comes to the shitties of Chicago.
Their new head coach, Ben Johnson, found First win at all? he's damn grateful for the quarterback that he has at QB one. 142.6 passer rating and four touchdowns. I thought he was really good. And you know the thing that you don't see On the stat sheet, he's getting a lot more comfortable calling those plays in the huddle.
We were able to get out of the huddle a little bit faster, and we were able to. get on the line and operate a little bit cleaner as well.
So was proud of him for that. Good for you, Ben Johnson. And by the way, you talked about a hyped up locker room after a head coach's first career win. I would strongly suggest you YouTube or find somewhere on social media. and type in Ben Johnson win number one.

So they are down. They're two big places. playmakers. Travis Kelsey, I don't know what the heck is going on with Travis Kelsey these days. But you do have Tyquan Thornton.
Who is that? He's a fourth-year wide receiver, first year playing in Kansas City, and it's not an accident that for the first time in his professional career, he has 70-plus receiving yards in a game. That is the beauty of Patrick Mahomes. It's the same thing we said about Tom Brady for years. He makes.
The most and Out of the least, and I'm not saying that Taekwondo is the least, I'm just saying. Mahomes gets the best out of everybody. It's why Tom Brady continuously was in more Super Bowls than not throughout the entirety of his NFL career. And the same can be said so far for Patrick Mahomes. That is the gift of being Patrick Mahomes.
It doesn't matter who he is playing with, he is going to turn. Average into stars. He's going to turn stars into superstars. That's what he does. And he was not going to let this Kansas City Chiefs team.
Go own three. Not on his watch. And they went into MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, even though they're called the New York Giants. We can have a debate on that for the next 30 minutes. And he completely controlled this game.
No questions asked. And what you see with Patrick Mahomes Is even when Travis Kelsey is not running the right routes or not turning around in time. Patrick Mahomes is not losing his you-know-what. He's just about the next play and about the next play and about the next play. And there is a reason why Kansas City from nineteen seventy to twenty seventeen had not been to a Super Bowl, But in five of the last six years, there was no They have.
And by the way, Whether it's someone like Tom Brady, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Johnny Unidas. You name any other quarterback, no one's accomplished that but Patrick Mahomes. And so I found it. you know, quizzical and puzzling. As to why so many people were doubting KC after starting Owen Two.
I said, are you not aware of what Kansas City did four years ago? Because I remember they got a Super Bowl shellacking, just like they did in the previous Super Bowl when they were down 34 to nothing against Philadelphia.
Well, they lost 31 tonight against Tampa five years ago, and how did they respond?
Well they start three and four, and then they win twelve of the next thirteen games. and had a good enough record to host the AFC title game. Moral of the story? Do not count out Patrick Mahomes. no matter what kind of start they get off to.
Because it's not lost on Kansas City that two of the last three years there have been multiple teams that have not only started Owen Two and made the playoffs, but started O and 2 and 1. once they have gotten to the playoffs. and need I remind you, 2008. The only thing stoppin' the Patriots from goin' nineteen and oh was the Giants and they got off to an 0-2 start. The Chiefs are very much aware of that.
And just like in every single year, they're aware of the fact that Patrick Mahomes has won the AFC West Crown. And yes, Justin Herbert is making throws that are unbelievable. Unbelievable. But What has Justin Herbert done in the postseason? If we don't have a cricket sound effect, Bachra, I don't blame you.
No, no, no, I'm not saying get, I'm not saying be that fast with your fingers. I'm just saying, you know, the answers: he's done Zilch, he's done squadoosh. I was pretty good. That was not a test. That was not a test, Botcher.
Look at you, man. But you get my piece, everyone's acting like Justin Herbert makes one great throw going across his body. to Keenan Allen, all of a sudden he's the new king of the AFC West. It's unbelievable how fast we move on for Patrick Mahomes. That's all I'm saying.
Justin Herbert started staying the supermodel. Who's he dating? Madison Beer. Who that? I'm not trying to do a Saints impression.
Who that? Seriously. She is a model. One. And two, she's also a musician.
She's basically like a B I wouldn't say B tiered Taylor Swift. But she is very famous with the youths. She is? Madison Breer. Madison Beer.

Travis Kelsey is the oldest one. I think Travis just turned 36. I know he's born in 89, late 89, because he's born the same year as Gronk. and thirty point five yards a game. And the 283 yards per game is in the air. They have no secondary. whatsoever.
Okay, so I so they couldn't torch Dallas? That's a problem. that this particular game was his finest. And he may not Go out. and throw for 135 yards in the first four minutes of her first quarter again.
and he may not put fourteen points up on the board that early in another game this regular season. But let's just look at the full numbers for a second, okay? And remember, this this measures an entire season. Caleb Williams has seven passing touchdowns to one interception this year. Can you tell me another quarterback that's done that in 2025?
I mean, honestly, there's not one right now.

Now, now, now, now. Let's just go back for a second, okay? If I look at Caleb Williams' rookie year, Where he was completely held back. By a coach who had no idea what he was doing in Matty Braflus and an offensive coordinator that had no idea what they were doing in Shane Waldron. He rushed for 489 yards as a rookie.
through for twenty touchdowns. and had just six interceptions when basically everything going around him was chaotic. Can you tell me the three other quarterbacks? that put up those kind of numbers in 2024. That put up those numbers?
Yep, yep, 489 rushing yards. Twenty pounds. Passing touchdowns to just six interceptions while also. throwing for over thirty five hundred yards. There are three other quarterbacks that were able to engender and produce and yield those types of numbers and productivity in twenty twenty four.
Do you know who the three are? Would that be Jaden Daniels? You are 100% correct. That is one. Do you know who the other two are?
J one hurts. No. But that's a good guess.
So, think of it.
So, Finney, the two guys that were MVP last year, the one guy who was the first team all-pro quarterback. And the other guy who was the MVP, so Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. Vinny, right? It is a lot different playing for John Harbaugh.
Okay. Dan Quinn. And of course Sean McDermott. Than it is playing for Matt Ebrefloos for two-thirds of the season. And then not even having a qualified head coach in this in this the last one third of that season.
That's what Caleb was still able to produce in spite of all the chaos that was going around him.
So I'm not going to sit here and lie to you and say he's elite. I'm not going to sit here and tell you he's one of the very best. But he is well without question. through the first twenty games of his career, a franchise quality quarterback. I don't know.
See, I'm a USC fan when it comes to football, and I didn't even like him then. Yeah, honestly. And Vinny, and Vinny, last question I have for you: how did USC do the year he left? How'd they do in 2024? Yikes.

And the defense completely was a no-show in that fourth quarter, giving up twenty-one unanswered points to a rookie who looks like h more than half the time he doesn't even belong on an NFL field than JJ McCarthy.
