It is. Yeah. The JR Sport Brief Show here with you, coast to coast, on the Infinity Sports Network. I'm coming to you live from Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you to our producer, New York City, Holding Things Down, Ryan Botcher.
And thank you to you for hanging out here with us. on Wednesday July second. Yeah, Tom flies. Damn Tom flies. Anyway, it's Wednesday I gave you a new top six list.
We took a look at some sports cities that certainly deserve better. I mean, they they maybe don't have no teams anymore. I had Oakland at number one on the list. Guess what I do every Wednesday? And then we have plenty of news that has come on down the pipe today as well.
DeAndre Ayton is a Laker. Mike Brown is the new head coach of the Knicks. Jaron Jackson Jr. Last night we learned that this guy has a He got turf toe. They gotta cut him open to fix it.
We got a Red Panda, one of the greatest half time entertainers in NBA history. She fell off her unicycle yesterday. embarrassing. I hope she's okay. I really do.
I hope she's fine. Man, we got uh Damien Lillard in uh has some places emerging where he might end up, could be anywhere. And then we got more to do before we roll out. Of course, at the end of the show. I'm going to tell you about a whole bunch of things that took place this day in sports history.
And then this is going to be fun. In about twenty minutes, we're gonna have a chat with uh was an executive from Bank of America. Holly O'Neill is going to join us. To talk about some of the great things that Bank of America is doing in your community. No, this is gonna be fun.
You like sports, you like community? Uh we're gonna have a great chat with Holly about some of the things that are coming up, especially of the USA games next year. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Eight eight eight seven ten four ISN is the number. That's 888.
Seven ten. For ISN. Thank you so much to Lance Allen for joining us from CBS 58. come came through, talked about the Milwaukee Bucks and whatever direction they're going in, Ah, but one thing we do know, the Bucks might have lost or gotten rid of Damien Lillard. They did gain Miles Turner.
I'll tell you about DeAndre Aiten in a second. Anyway, You can find me online everywhere at JR Sport Brief. Thank you to everybody listening on your local Infinity Sports Network affiliate. You can listen on the free Odyssey app. Go ahead and put it on your phone.
You got Sirius XM, it's channel three hundred seventy five. If you have a smart speaker, ask the speaker to play. the infinity, sports, Network. The Lakers finally got themselves a centre. We know that they needed a center since they got rid of Anthony Davis and brought on Luka Doncich.
They tried it. Mark Williams, they traded for him, said his body sucks, sent him back They wanted to go ahead and add maybe a guy like Brooke Lopez. Brooke Lopez goes to the other Los Angeles team. He goes to the Clippers. And so now the Lakers have their hands on DeAndre Ayton, a two year sixteen million dollar contract.
Option year for the last year, so whenever DeAndre Ayton gets sick and tired of playing basketball, he can just quit, or maybe in the last year, he can collect the check for doing nothing. Exciting? Eh, not really. It the Lakers need a censor. They got a center.
they avoided the absolute worst case scenario. That would have been DeAndre Ayton replacing Miles Turner with the Pacers. But now he's a Laker. And when I take a look at the Lakers, Yeah, the star line up looks nice. LeBron, Donchich, Reeves, Hachamura, Ayton.
But after that they they have no depth. The Lakers might as well, I don't know, just, uh Pick up those guys playing basketball at Muscle Beach and see if they'll go out there. And uh and and help them out.
So let's see how long LeBron uh goes before his agent Rich Paul puts out a statement about how they're expecting the Los Angeles Lakers to continue getting better, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. At least DeAndre Ayton can't get stuck in the snow anymore. like he did in Portland. And no reasons not to show up to work unless DeAndre Ayton is now just gonna blame The traffic. I couldn't make it to the game.
I was uh I was stuck on I-5. I don't know what the hell this guy is going to say.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country. The New York Knicks finally have themselves a coach. I mean they've had the players. Done some good jobs adding Yabusele, the center who dunked on LeBron James. They added.
Jordan Clarkson, who can go out there and just get you buckets. And finally, The New York Knicks have themselves a coach. It's Mike Brown, who used to coach Lebron James, and just got fired by the Kings. You know what they say about one man's trash? It's another man's treasure.
And the New York Knicks, well, they fire a lot of coaches. They put a lot of trash out on the street. Listen to what Shams had to say about the Knicks hiring Mike Brown. Mike Brown is expected to be named the next New York Knicks head coach and this comes after Mike Brown had his second formal interview with the Knicks this week and this time with owner James Dolan on Tuesday and the job now will be his. Knicks president Leon Rose began this head coaching search about a month ago when they fired Tom Thibodeau.
They requested permission and were denied by five current head coaches and then they started their process of interviewing several available coaches. They went through multi-round stages and now Mike Brown, he's a four-time champion as an assistant coach. Amina, he's coached a vast array of superstar talent across three decades as an NBA assistant and head coach. Yeah, and he's gonna get fired. Hey, Bacha, I give him five years, it's way too long.
I give him three years. What do you think? That's a good line. I would say I'm going to go. under just because I don't think they're gonna get a title soon.
And then they'll eventually blow it up and restart. And he'll they'll fight a guy. And you know what? He's not stupid. He knows this.
He understands this. Like, nobody takes a job with the New York Knicks and just goes.
Well this is just going to work out great. Like, it was a stretch that Tom Thibodeau lasted five years, had the best five-year stretch that the Knicks have seen since the 90s, and he still got fired. and the dumbass New York next fired him. had no plan Wanted to reach out to every Tom, Dick and Harry that they could potentially interview and ended up with Mike Brown. Whoop the freaking do?
All the Knick fans that were screaming and yelling about, oh my god, we got to get rid of Tom Thibodeau. And that's what people, that's what kills me. Everybody always wants to fire the head coach. Everybody always wants to fire the manager. But nobody ever has a thought or an idea.
as to who can come through and take over next. The Nicks didn't get no Jason Gidd.
Okay, they didn't reach back and get Red Holzman. I mean, what are we doing here? What does it matter? The Knicks needed better players and now needed a guy to manage them. And so good luck to Mike Brown.
He'll be the latest whipping boy. high paid whipping boy, for the New York Knicks, for their fans, and ultimately their owner. Let's see how long before uh mister Dolan gets what, coach number sixteen or fifteen? Uh And just in the past twenty, twenty-five years, the Knicks are just. They are a mess.
eight eight eight seven ten four ISN. That's eight eight eight seven ten four I SN. I'm not excited about DeAndre Ayton to the Lakers. Let me know when the Lakers add some depth. I am certainly not excited about Mike Brown being named the new head coach.
or not named, soon to be head coach of the New York Knicks. It do you think either one of these deals makes sense?
Well, they make sense, but do you think it makes a massive difference? 888-710-4ISN. And then also. Speaking of destinations and making sense, we know that Damien Lillard who's gonna get twenty two and a half million dollars coming his way. for the next five years.
He doesn't even have to play basketball anywhere. Damian Lullard is rehabbing his Achilles. And apparently Damian Lillard has already received calls about where he can end up next.
Now If you happen to be of a certain age, like Damien Lullard, When you have torn your Achilles, you are about to turn thirty five years old in two weeks.
Well, team's gonna come knocking on that door. I assume, yes. Especially if you're not going to cost a whole hell of a lot of money. And so Chris Haynes, who was very close with Damian Lillard, he was on NBA TV. and he had some thoughts.
Well, a report, one seems that I've already called up. Damien Lullard. Teams have been reaching out and trying to gauge his interest.
So as a, you know, starting out really, this is his first free agency. One of those teams, look out for the Miami Heat. That was the team that was trying to trade for him when Dame did request a trade from Portland initially.
So that's one team that's going to be in the mix. There's others as well. Throw Portland in there as well as a team that possibly make a reunion. Oh, man. Th the only reason for him to go back to Portland is to to be back with his family.
And sure, maybe he just wants to play basketball. He's like, oh, yeah, sure, I'll go back, but for all of that, just retire. Like, is it that much? You're going to be on the road a good majority of the time. You go on the road, you go back.
I don't know. Port Lindhoff Bacha, does that? I can't speak for the guy. I don't live his life. He's probably made more money than 99.9% of NBA players.
He has to be in like the top five, top 10 when it comes to all-time salaries that have been made. Why go back to Portland besides just I like to play basketball and I get to see my family? At that point, why not retire, right? Maybe this might be his retirement run, like a year or two in Portland. You have a good season, you call it quits and then on a high note.
Just to play basketball? Maybe if he's getting paid enough, like you're already getting paid from Milwaukee for the next, was it five years, six years?
So uh maybe just get where you can get and see where it goes. Yeah, I'm going to make another 5 mil just showing up to play for the Blazers. At that point, Damian Lillard will be the greatest rec league player ever. Like I'm in the NBA. I know I'm not winning anything.
I'm only playing because I get to stay close to my kids and I make another $5 million. Not the worst life in the world. But if he goes back to Portland, that is just one massive just shake my damn head. I mean, if you want to win something. We we know there's they're better places.
I would expect, and it's not out of the realm of possibility, but also, let's be clear. The man is not going to play this upcoming season. Damian Lillard is going to be rehabbing his torn Achilles. That is about to be 35 years old. A 35-year-old ripped up to kill these.
A team would look at him and go Let's get em on the cheap. And let's get em early. Let's get him in the building. From Damian Lillard's perspective, Why would he dare sign with the team right now? For what?
If the idea is to be on a competitive squad. Knowing how much things change year after year after year in the league. This guy goes down, championship gone. This guy goes down and now team can't even get past the first round. We see and we've seen how much injuries can have an impact on the playoffs.
Damie and Lillard ain't playing in October. Or November or December or January or February. I don't know. Maybe he has Wolverine healing powers. There's a good chance we don't see him until the following season.
Why not wait it out? Why not wait to see what other teams do? How next season ends up. Like, where does LeBron James go? You know, what happens with Giannis?
And by the way, I don't know if even Giannis and Damian Lillard are on the best of terms right now. Who who knows? But wouldn't you want to see how the landscape kind of rounds out? If I were Damien Lullard, and I could play right now today, I'm sure he be in Miami, or he might be in Los Angeles with the Lakers, or he may say, Why even play for the Lakers? I can't touch the ball.
Or maybe he's going to be satisfied with just taking a step back given his age and all the money he's made. We don't know. If I'm Damien Lillard, I'm not rushing into nothing. To sign a minimum contract for what? I'm getting twenty two million dollars for the next five years to rehab?
They're people who have to go to rehab. Have to pay to get there. The physical therapist is a pain in the ass, and they never get better.
Okay, this guy's making money to get better and just I don't know. Shout outs to the basketball players. Everybody is shooting the ball, kicking the ball, throwing the ball. making millions of dollars. Bacha, there's gonna be plenty of people here over the weekend.
Fourth of July reliving their their glory days, thinking that they could just get their ass up off the couch and just get the ball throw the ball, kick the ball, run the bases, they will be paying for it. in a few days, and they don't make no money. It's for the love of the game. That's all that's all you gotta say. If you want to play ball, you'll play ball.
Damn.
Well, you're going to swing a bat this weekend? You're going to do that? I might throw a baseball around. Uh I might yeah, play wooffleball. I still got in me.
you still have it in you. Have you been injured now that you stopped playing? No, I I've been injured before when I was a kid, but I'm fine now.
Okay.
So you you are. You're not worried about hurting yourself now, dude. You don't care about that. The worst thing that might happen to me is if I like. I don't know.
Pull a hamstring, but I have never physically like. Pulled one bad. Knock on wood.
Okay.
Yeah. Well, that that that's what happens when you when you run, man. You get older. You start using things less, and all of a sudden you just You you you take the car out for a ride. Without warming it up.
That's just what happens, man. It's just that's how life is. Do I do like a I gotta do like a yoga session beforehand and like stretch the muscles out? And l let me tell you something. As you get older you you may want to start thinking about that, yes.
Yeah, I've tried yoga before at home. It's not that bad. Pilates is pushing it though.
Well, yoga, the purpose of yoga is to stretch out the muscles, man. You know, like John Carlos Stanton could certainly use yoga. Has he gotten hurt yet? He's still playing? Boy, he had the elbow injuries, the the double strained elbow.
Yeah, well uh he he's come back, but he hasn't gotten heard since. Oh, he's due, I guess what, over the weekend, probably, right? Uh big series too, it's Subway series, so maybe he might try harder. Oh, well, we'll see. Anytime he seems to try to run the bases, somehow, some way, Giancarlo Stanton goes down.
Yeah, yoga's great. You got to stretch it out. Yeah, that's a little bit of JR wisdom for everybody listening across the country. Don't don't don't push it. Porn anything.
Don't overly exert yourself physically thinking that you could be Patrick Mahomes. Don't go out there thinking that you're Aaron Judge or Shohei Otani at the softball game. Uh don't think you're my homes. It's just Take it easy. And do please do yourself a favor as well.
Don't be Malik Beasley. Don't don't watch your money over the weekend. Also, don't be Shador. There's a lot of people I could think of. Don't be Shador Sanders.
Botcher, what was he going? A hundred five? One oh five? It was like one oh one, I think in a fifty five or a sixty. Yahim, don't be Zaccheady.
Zac Edie also going more than one hundred miles per hour?
Now that's scary. That man is seven foot four going on, hunt. Damn it, if his ass flew out that windshield not that I'm wishing on it, but damn That's a big dude and he was driving a Kia Sorrento. Damn.
They think a Tahoe would be more appropriate or something like that. I don't know. Bottom line is. It's the holiday weekend. Coming up is the holiday weekend.
Be safe on the road? Be mindful of the other human beings that are out there with you, that they have families and lives and people that care about them and love them, maybe. Also. And take care of your body, take care of yourselves, take care of others. That's some good Gerald wisdom.
A matter of fact, let's do this. We're going to take a break. When we come back on the other side, I want to share a conversation that I had earlier today with Holly O'Neal. She is an executive with Bank of America, and she and BOA are doing some amazing things in the community as it relates to sports, including to help bring the Special Olympics USA Games next year. But it's not just taking place in the great state of Minnesota.
A lot of great activities BOA is having all over the country, as well as Special Olympics wherever you might live.
So I want to share with you the conversation I had with Holly O'Neal on the other side of the break. Of course, at the end of the show, we'll talk about a few things that took place this day in sports history. There is, oh, oh, so much more to do. You're locked in. You're listening to the JR Sport Reef Show, Coast to Coast.
or the Infinity Sports Network. You're listening to the JR Sport Brief. It's the JR Sport Brief Show here with you, coast to coast, on the Infinity Sports Network. I know everybody's getting geared up for the big old holiday 4th of July weekend, but I need to get you geared up for something that's going to take place in 2026. It is the Special Olympics USA Games, but we also want to get you geared up with a great conversation with someone who is helping to present such a thing, has a great connection with Special Olympics.
It is Holly O'Neill, president of Consumer Retail and Preferred, Bank of America Executive Management Team, Advisory Board, Special Olympics in Massachusetts. Holly, I can go on forever. Is that enough? That's plenty. Thanks, JR.
Appreciate it. Absolutely, Holly. How are you ahead of this holiday? I'm great ahead of the 4th of July holiday and really looking forward to it, but not as much as I'm looking forward to the Special Olympics next year. Absolutely.
So before we even get to next year, before we hit that fast forward button, tell us about this relationship between BOA and Special Olympics. Yeah, it's great.
So we are currently on a one-year countdown to the 2026 USA Games for Special Olympics in Minneapolis. And we just recently announced a $5 million grant to the Special Olympics that they will use to empower their athletes for those games.
So it's a three-year grant. We have had a multi-decade relationship with the Special Olympics that we are super excited about and continue to be committed to.
So the three-year grant's going to help them support their infrastructure and really growth of their leadership in the athletic space. both locally as well as nationally and globally. Holly O'Neill is here with us from Bank of America. Why is this an initiative that Bank of America is involved in? Why is this something, why is Special Olympics something that you're involved in, Holly?
Yeah, so, you know, I've been involved with Special Olympics since I was a teenager, a lifeguard, and met an athlete at the pool where I was working and became really close with her. And, you know, I think from a young age, I saw the power of inclusion firsthand. And that really has stuck with me. And I, you know, I really believe that. you know when everyone has the skills and opportunities to reach whatever their full potential is we all win you know organizations schools workplaces and ultimately our communities so um you know the power of inclusion is really strong here and there's no More enjoyable way to do that than through sports.
Everyone loves sports, and I think Special Olympics really hits on both of those. Absolutely.
I can certainly understand. I've worked with Special Olympics, it feels like, for decades now, to the college stores.
So I certainly appreciate your work. And we know sports is a great way to bring people together, Holly. What are some other ways that BOA is involved in the world of sports?
So we have many partnerships with the most iconic brands in sports.
So the Masters, FIFA, and the world of sports, whether it's Special Olympics, FIFA, or the Masters, They all share a vision for excellence and achievement in their spaces. And that enables us to drive growth, deepen the relationships with our clients, and really partner in our communities wherever they are.
So, those partnerships are incredibly important to us. And as I said, there's no better way than to unite than through sports. And I think. That is where the journey of achievement is front and center. Sports unite us, whether it's Special Olympics, the Masters, FIFA, whatever it is.
So we're really excited about that. And, you know, another thing that we recently did in our portfolio was Golf With Us clinics, which opens the door and the sport of golf to kids across the country and really shows them what the art of the possible is.
So we're doing things all the time in this space. And those are just a few examples. No, some great examples. Talk about a few. Those are great examples.
Holly O'Neill is here with us on the JR Sport Re Show from Bank of America. When we think about what we can expect next year for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, that's a year away. But there are always so many Special Olympic events that go on year-round, city to city, state to state. I can sit here and tell stories and experiences. What would you tell all of our listeners, whether they're in California, Massachusetts, Florida, here in Georgia with me?
What would you tell people about getting involved with Special Olympics? Yeah, I would say get involved at the local level. There are amazing Special Olympics organizations in. every state and this really is a grassroots organization locally in every town in every state there are great opportunities to volunteer as a coach or to just volunteer at an event locally and i'll tell you i've participated in several with my own kids and there is no more rewarding of a day than cheering those athletes on.
So there are a whole host of levels. You can organize, you can volunteer, and you really do it at the local level.
So I think that's a great aspect as well.
Now, we got plenty of sports fans listening all over North America, interested in the Lakers and free agency. But I think it's also worth their while to get invested in everything going on locally as well. Holly, please tell everybody where they can find out more information about what you guys are doing at Bank of America, Special Olympics USA Games. Fill us in. Yeah, so I think the Special Olympics USA game, go out to the Special Olympics site.
They have all the information. It will be in Minneapolis, Minnesota, June 20th through 26th.
So tune in and watch if you're not able to attend.
So I think that is a great way to... to get involved. And for Bank of America, you can look us up at vove.com. And we have plenty of information on our Golf With Us program and the other partnerships that we have. Hey, Holly, I want to know about all the cool stuff you guys got going on.
The JR Sport Brief has to make an appearance and pick up all the great things y'all are doing, okay? Love it. Thanks, JR. Appreciate it. Thank you so much.
Don't work too hard over the weekend. Take a couple days off, okay? I'll try. I'll try. Yeah, a great conversation earlier today with Holly O'Neill.
I wanted to share that with you all as she came through courtesy of Bank of America. They're doing a lot of great things next year with Special Olympics, a lot of great things all throughout the course. Of the community.
So, yeah, big ups to everybody involved in Special Olympics. I've done a lot of great work with the organization over the years. And let me tell you something: there's nothing better than the athletes who are out there competing. Much love to the athletes of Special Olympics. And thank you so much, Holly, for coming through and spreading that news.
Marco Belletti, before we went to break, we talked about all the crazy things that people are going to be getting into over the weekend. I started naming names of poor examples, guys that you don't want to be like, like maybe speeding like Shador. speeding like Zach Edie, A spending like Malik Beasley. I was trying to encourage our producer here, Ryan Botcher, to maybe slow down and maybe not pull a hamstring if he's going to go out there and try to swing a bat over the weekend.
So, what the heck are you going to be doing? You going to take it easy, or we got to give you words of advice, too? No, definitely no pull to anything because I'm not going anywhere to do any of that.
So, no, I don't think you have to worry about me. My concern is getting the ceiling downstairs hopefully fixed by the end of the week.
So that's my big thing. Did the kids do something to the ceiling? No, uh quick story.
So. Trying to get the two-year-old ready, we had to go to like a birthday party thing or whatever on Sunday, and I hear a loud bang, but not like a crazy loud bang. from downstairs and I yelled to my five-year-old daughter. What was that? And she goes...
The roof fell. And I won't work out. Oh my god.
So I'm thinking she's Wrong or confused or an idiot, like whatever. Like a five-like a five-year-old would be. Right. Yeah. So I yelled at, and I'm like, Are you okay?
She goes, Yeah. All right, so the roof obviously didn't fall. Like, that doesn't make any sense.
So, I finish doing what I'm doing. Five, ten minutes go by. I go down there, and she's sitting on the couch. JR, there's panels of the roof everywhere in the room, except for like the four Foot radius that she is sitting on the couch where she's playing with her Barbies. Unboxed.
Basically, half the panel, maybe a quarter of the panels fell from the. And I look at him like, You're okay, nothing hit you? She's like, Yeah, I'm fine. Come on. All right.
Didn't care at all. Yeah. But now I obviously have to, you know, take care of that. Yeah, I I I know I know how it goes.
Well, I'm glad she's okay, Mark. I'm happy she's okay. I'm stunned. The entire futon covered, and they didn't break, so they were still intact, so it wasn't like there was rubble or whatever. But still, she could have got hit by one of those.
I mean, I'm sure it wouldn't have felt good. All over the futon and everywhere else, except where her tiny little body was sitting playing with her Barbies on the futon.
Well, that's well, I'm I'm happy to hear that, Marco. I appreciate that, but the ceiling needing to be taken care of this weekend, not exactly top of my list that I want to. Oh, I understand. You know, Marco, this story is from so long ago, I don't even remember. One day in my very first apartment in Yonkers, New York, I came home, My ceiling in my apartment in the bathroom came down.
And I'm like, you got to be kidding me. Like I guess water damage from this the the apar Apartment above, I walked into my bathroom and I said, What the hell? The bathroom, the ceiling fell down.
Okay.
I have I don't even know what I did for a bunch of days. I have no idea. I just I must have photos of it somewhere. The entire ceiling was on the floor. I was looking up through the building into the next bathroom.
I'm like What is this? You know, the one good thing about renting, though, that's where you just make a phone call and you don't have to deal with it no more. That's the best part. Yeah, I didn't have to do anything. I don't know.
I'm thinking about it. I don't know what I did because it's not like they just patched it up and fixed it. In like a day. You know, I don't I don't know. You don't remember that?
See, I remember when it happened to my brother. We luckily lived like two minutes away from each other at that point for only like a couple of years. That same thing happened to him. He had to keep coming to my place to use the bathroom or take a shower. Oh my god.
Now it was only like a two-minute drive, but like all of a sudden you were Y'all, I need to use bathroom. All right. It was hilarious. It happened for like a week. You know that's the other thing about the holidays.
There's going to be people. In folks' houses that typically don't visit, They're going to be in people's houses. They're going to be breaking stuff, not telling you that they broke it. hoping that you don't find out, hoping that you don't know it's them. There's going to be toilets clogged and and kitchen appliances broken and destroyed.
This is the worst thing about some of these holidays when you let people in your house, Marco. It's about to be curtains. No, it's true. Then that's like the naked gun. That's where you find the fish with the.
With the pen through it and the sword, like, oh, yeah. You find all kinds of stuff three days, four days, three weeks later. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Listen, be respectful there's some other jail with them.
Be respectful to other people's houses. Inside the house. And more importantly, let people know.
Something breaks. Yeah, like I know you think you're trying to, oh man, I don't, you know, let them just let them know. Eventually they're going to figure it out, and then they're going to do the, you know, and then they got to do the mission impossible to try to figure out how it broke, when it broke, what the hell happened. Just let them know. It sucks, but just let them know.
Yeah. Like I I accidentally took the the handle off your faucet in the the second bathroom, okay? Yeah. And now I can't put it back.
Something like that. The towel rack fell. Don't just kind of hang it up and so the next time they go in there, boo-boom, it falls again. Just let 'em know that it fell. They'll put the spackle, they'll get it back up.
But let 'em know. Yeah. That's why things like that, you just gotta try to keep people in the back yard, you know?
Well, I try to do that in general, just keep the people out of the hell out of my house. Yeah, just keep them in the house. And apparently, they don't want to come in anyway because the roof is falling.
So. It w a natural deterrent good idea. You just be like, hey, yeah, I had a problem a couple of days ago. You may want to stay outside. The roof fell down.
Just FYI.
So just stay outside. Good idea. I'm going to use that one, Mark. I'm going to use that one next time, okay? I wish it wasn't true.
Yeah, well There's nothing wrong with a white lash, a house, say whatever. I wish it wasn't true. That's the problem. I don't want to deal with this roof this weekend.
Now, granted, I probably won't have to do most of the work, but that's not the point. Yeah, I'm giving myself advice, okay? To start telling lies, people out, okay. It's a word of advice to myself. Look at me, giving advice to everybody, including me.
It's the JR Sport Ree Show here with you, coast to coast, on the Infinity Sports Network. We're going to take a break. When we come back, we'll talk about a few things that took place this day in sports history, July 2nd. But right now, it is time for a news flash. Just heard of it, Marco Belletti.

Thank you so much to Holly O'Neill from Bank of America for joining us in the last break. Thank you so much. Earlier in the show, we had a great and terrific chat with Lance Allen. Who covers all things Milwaukee Bucks for CBS fifty eight in Milwaukee, and thank you to all the callers who came through to chat with us as well. whether you told us about uh A city that deserves more in the sports space, or whether you told me, uh, you know, I don't know, about Cleveland or why people hate the city.
I I have no idea. Uh, but anyway, It's the end of the show. And of course at the end of every show I share with you a Well, a few things that took place this day in sports history, it's a day will be no different.
So let's go. Back in the days when I was young I'm not a kid anymore, but some days I sit and wish I was a kid again. It's time for this day in sports history. See, back in those days, we had radio and you couldn't see anything and it was primitive and lousy and we liked it. On the JR Sport Brief Show.
I wish I was 50 years younger and I'd kick your ass. Today is July 2nd. The year is 2025. But if we go back to July 2nd, 1989, it was a big day for all my people that love horse racing. Yes, we got four major derbies in the world.
The Kentucky Derby, the Epsom Derby, French Derby, and damn it, well, this day in sports history. Jockey Steve Cawthon, he became the first rider to win all four of the major derbies. He won the Irish Derby with his horse, Old Vic. Let's take a listen to this. You love horse racing?
Whether you do or don't, here it is.
Well, there was drama before the start of the Irish Derby at the Curra when Ol Vic seemed to have a warble under the saddle. But Steve Cawthon was happy when he reached the start, and he was aiming to become the first jockey to ride the winner of the world's major derbies. Steve Cawland from Pad Edery, then comes Zayani, Ulvik from Ildaniski as they race down into the towards the final furlong. Ulvic from Ildaniski making ground on the far side is observation post. Zayani's under pressure, glowing stars making ground, but Olvic looks to have them inside the final furlong.
It's Olvic from Steve Cawthon being pressed now by observation post, but not being pressed very hard. Olvic is going to win it smoothly. At the line, Olvic is the winner. Observation post, second, Ildaniski third. Yeah, hopefully, some people got paid off of that.
How about this July 2nd, 1995, Hideo Nomo for the Dodgers? He started. The all-star game. He pitched two scoreless innings. He had one hit.
He struck out three guys. The National League won 3-2. Hideo Nomo ended up winning rookie of the year that year, coming over from Japan. Let's take a listen to some of the amazing cuts, courtesy of MLB. And quite a sight on the mound.
Who would have figured? Hideo Nomo last year pitching. in Japan, had five no decisions, then went six and oh in June.
Now the one-two pitch to walk in. There it is. Waved at and missed. And boy, I tell you, you've got the fourth ball here, and you've also got the twilight, and you've got a strip of sunlight between the mound and the play. 18 out of 16, so that's only the third time all year long they've caught a runner.
And down goes Martinez. And down goes Bell. Drupkin lashes one to right field and on the run is Tony Gwynn to make the catch. Yeah, I mean, we had Hideo Normo, he kind of helped set the stage for a lot of the pitchers and. guys that we have now who come over from Japan.
July 2nd. 2013. Homer Bailey It threw her a no-hitter. against the Giants. He ended up winning the game three to nothing.
He struck out nine guys, only had one walk, which prevented him obviously from pitching a perfect game. Let's take a listen to that no-hitter closed-out courtesy at MLB. Strike away and out away. Homer Bailey. Round ball to footer.
Frazier gloves throw to first and Homer. Bailey for the second time in his major league career. Has tossed a no-hit. Yeah, it's crazy, he threw one the year before. Good for him.
And speaking about before, I can't forget this. July 2nd, I'm going back in time. 2005, Venus Williams won Wimbledon. This was her third Wimbledon title. She beat Lindsey Davenport in three sets.
This is 2005. I can't forget Venus.
Sorry, Venus. I just, you never know what life is going to throw at you, and each and every day I just. I just expect the sun to come up, that's all, these days. Other than that, I also have to thank my other friends. They aren't here today.
Bill Lamar and Jonathan Louick, and also Kim Chennault. You guys, I love you guys. Oh, there you have it, so calm and sweet and smooth after a wind.
Now we have to listen to somebody angry after a loss. Let's go to July 2nd, 2017. You might remember this: Manny Pacquiao lost his WBO title to Jeff Horn. I mean, this was home cooking. We had some judges who scored the fight 117 to 111, which made absolutely no sense, okay?
Teddy Atlas, who was calling the fight at the time, afterwards. Let's just say he was kind of ticked off. Reminds me of that practice that, I'm not gonna mince words, that stupid practice in the States where some idiot decided to give trophies to everybody. Just for a good effort. Instead of saying, oh, guy won, guy lost, and you deal with it.
You learn. It's part of growing up. It's part of life. They give everybody a trophy. That's what they did tonight.
They gave a trophy, a win, a huge win, to horn the local kid for trying hard. You're not supposed to get it for trying on. You're supposed to get it for winning. And I thought Pacquiao won the fight if you go by the real rules, the markers of Queensbury rules. Who lands the cleaner punches?
Yeah, how about no participation trophies? The shout outs to Staten Island Zone. Teddy Atlas. That was in 2017.
Now here we are in what year we in 2025. Manny Pacquiao is getting ready to fight again. coming out of retirement to fight Mario Barrios. On July 19th. And there you have it folks, there are a few things that took place.
This day in sports History. Yeah, a lot of fun. Let's see if anything happens uh crazy in the world of sports over the next few days. I'll be gone. I will be back with you on Monday.
Okay, no GR sport brief tomorrow, no GR sport brief on Friday. I am taking a couple days off, so don't miss me too much while I'm gone. If you've missed a minute or a second of the show, make sure you go ahead and hit rewind on the Fari. Odyssey App. Vacho, what are you getting into for the weekend?
You out here making money? What are you doing? I'm here tomorrow and Friday, but not on. On Friday I'm not on this show. I'm on a earlier.
But yeah, other than that, yeah, I'm I'm chilling this weekend.
Okay, good. That's a good thing. You're gonna swing a bat, I guess, huh? Wolfer Ball bat. No real bats.
That's too much back tension and torque. Too much back tension and torque. Yes, avoid all of that. And don't hand out participation trophies. Shout outs to Teddy Atlas for sharing that advice.
Listen, people, I wish you well. I'm going to check out some soccer, some football here. We got PSG that is going to be playing in Atlanta. I'm going to be minding my business. I'm be relaxin'.
